After visiting the serene gardens and artistic treasures of the Sorolla Museum, you will likely have worked up an appetite. The area surrounding this beloved cultural landmark is a haven for food lovers, offering a delightful mix of traditional Spanish pastries, artisan breads, and specialty coffee. Whether you are looking for a quick snack or a place to relax with a sweet treat, the local bakery scene does not disappoint.
The neighborhood near the museum is known for its elegant residential streets and high-quality gastronomic offerings. Here, baking is treated as both an art and a science, with many shops using slow fermentation techniques and premium ingredients. You can find everything from flaky croissants to rich chocolate cakes, all within a short walking distance of the museum’s entrance.
Choosing the right bakery can elevate your entire afternoon in Madrid. While some spots are famous for their traditional Spanish "napolitanas" and "palmeras," others specialize in modern sourdough loaves and gluten-free options. Understanding the variety available helps you match your cravings with the perfect establishment, ensuring you do not waste time on mediocre pastries.
Many of these bakeries are small, family-run businesses that have been perfecting their recipes for generations. Their dedication to craft means you are often tasting history, not just sugar and flour. Visiting them offers a glimpse into the daily life of Madrid’s residents, far from the crowded tourist traps that dominate the city center.
We have curated a list of the best spots based on the quality of their ingredients, their proximity to the museum, and their reputation among locals. This guide focuses on places where the aroma of fresh butter and baked dough greets you at the door. You will find options ranging from grab-and-go counters to cozy cafes with seating.
Before diving into the list, remember that Spanish eating schedules differ from other countries. Bakeries are often busiest in the late morning and again in the early evening. Arriving slightly off-peak will give you the best selection and a more relaxed experience.
Below is our selection of the top bakeries you should consider visiting after your cultural tour of the Sorolla Museum.

Maybe the best almond croissant I’ve had in my life so far. There were literally almond slices falling out of the bag—it was that packed and that good.
We waited in line for about 10 minutes before getting to the counter, which felt reasonable given how popular the spot is.
What we ordered (and recommend):
• Almond croissant
• Chocolate chip cookie
• Cardamom bun
Everything was so, so good. The almond croissant is a must—rich, flaky, and loaded with flavor. The cookie and cardamom bun were just as satisfying.
I had the matcha latte, and it was fine, but nothing special. I’d probably try something else to drink next time.
Honestly, I wanted to try more items, but I had to show some restraint.
It was definitely worth the Uber ride. There’s limited seating inside, but there’s a park right down the street with plenty of benches, which makes for a great spot to sit and enjoy everything.
Sophie O'Hara★★★★★
Delicious pastries (the best ham and cheese croissant I have ever had) after being burnt by a bakery we tried to eat at on the first morning that wouldn’t serve food until 10 despite being “open” from 8am and gave us the most horrible coffee, we tried Alma Norma which we’d already scoped out on our pre Madrid guide map. Thank goodness we did, exceptional food, perfect coffee, cute decor and vibe with ambience music, cool interior (decor and temperature) with a couple little high table benches inside and a couple benches outside.
We returned every morning during our stay, never had to queue more than a couple people as we were relatively early each morning although Sunday seemed to be busier didn’t mind the wait as the neighbourhood view is pretty and it wasn’t hot yet. On the last day we bought a number of items to take home on the train with us to freeze some and enjoy later! They were accommodating, with helpful recommendations and friendly.
Tried ham and cheddar (best ham and cheese croissant ever tasted), almond (enormous, delicious), pan au chocolate (disappointing compared to the rest as pastry is amazing and big and there’s two sticks of chocolate but the ratio feels off balance especially compared to the others), blackberry danish (amazing), chocolate orange pan suisse (phenomenal, don’t bother with pan au chocolate if this is available, so decadent, unique and delicious real orange flavour), ricotta bun (interesting but not my kind of thing, wasn’t expecting a dense cake with ricotta centre) and a quiche Lorraine (amazing pastry, tasty filling, too big for one person also needs eating right away or refrigerating which I couldn’t do so had to eat all).

Amazing bakery! Three of our four choices were sublime - some of the best baked goods we’ve ever had. The lemon poppy cake was a tad dry though. My Americano was very flavorful. Definitely the best coffee I had in Madrid. Unfortunately the staff didn’t notice that another customer claimed my daughter’s iced coffee, but the chai she ended up with was fine. The shop is adorable but very small so limited room to stay and eat. Plenty of outdoor seating in the neighborhood park nearby.

I love this bakery. Sometimes I walk 20 minutes from my flat just to come here! The bread quality is exceptional and the prices are very cheap for an independent bakery in Madrid! Sometimes it gets busy, but standing and waiting in queue feels enjoyable rather than irritating in such a warm and welcoming area and amongst such vibrant decor! The staff are always helpful, happy, and quick, and I could go on about this place forever. If you’re in Madrid and looking for a bakery to try, this is the one for you!

Tucked into the heart of Chamberí, this quaint little bakery was exactly where I needed to be on a Saturday morning. Honestly, I’m not sure what more anyone could ask for—the pastries are exquisite. I’ve never tasted anything quite like them. There is little seating but just down the street is a gorgeous square to enjoy the delicious delicacies and watch all the local dogs enjoy their day too!
It’s absolutely worth a stop if you’re in Madrid. Just have a little patience, and enjoy the experience. And despite what some people say, the line isn’t just full of tourists—but even if it were, who cares? Good pastries are for everyone.

The smell, the taste, the ambiance, the friendliness of the staff, all is amazing here. I am so happy that they chose our neighborhood to open up this bakery 😍 I already liked a lot Bucolico cafe in downtown but this bakery is even cuter in my opinion 🥰 there are 3 little tables inside and a thin bar for sitting outside with a great specialty coffee. I was so happy when i took the 1st sip of my espresso - ! Finally a smooth & correct taste! I was starting to get fed up of drinking coffee with an unfortunate burnt taste in many “specialty cafes” around Madrid ☺️ their babka and all kind of bizcocho are amazing. You should also taste their bread , they are good at all kinds ! PS. Another huge star would go to the music taste in this local store ❤️

One of the best sourdoughs I’ve ever had. Still fresh after a few hours since opening — chewy soft inside and crisp flavorful crust.
Super nice service and affordable prices (€3.5 for 1/2 loaf)

Super cozy, tiny place with outstanding service, an amazing seating area outdoors and the best pastries in Madrid. Gotta try the tarta de queso with figs on top and the bun with cream, orange blossoms and raspberry powder, but you can’t go wrong with anything really. Great coffee as well.

Tova is a wonderful addition to Madrid.
Nestled in a blessed corner of Chamberí, it brings something genuinely fresh to the neighborhood. From the moment you walk in, there’s a sense of care and attention to detail that sets it apart. The bakery is outstanding, and everything we tried was excellent—beautifully made, full of flavor, and clearly crafted with quality ingredients.
Unfortunately, I made the rookie mistake of not taking any photos. That leaves me with only one option: I’ll have to come back, try more things, and write another review properly.
It’s rare to find a place that feels both exciting and welcoming from the very first visit, but Tova manages exactly that. I’m genuinely happy to have something like this in Madrid, and especially in Chamberí. Looking forward to returning soon.
Updated on July 2nd!
I’m back at Tova, just like I promised, because, you know, I simply couldn’t resist another round of genius. The experience is, of course, incredible—personalized service, meticulous care, and yes, the products are, unsurprisingly, top-tier. Tova has absolutely raised the bar in this neighborhood, and I’m honestly in awe of what they’re offering.

Pastries are to die for, especially the burek and the raspberry vanilla bun. The coffee was not the best, but keeping in mind it is not a specialty coffee shop. Super cozy small place to dine in, cute decor. Will definitely come back!

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place.
The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail.
I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible.
Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs!
The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate)
Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion!
Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam.
The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it.
On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth.
They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history.
Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable.
The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry.
The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation.
La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity.
A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊
The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares.
Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol.
Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style.
Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.
Aaliya Tariq★★★★★
Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

I discovered this shop by chance while walking on my old Chamberi neighborhood. They had a sign saying "pan de verdad" (true bread). I ordered a "pan de verdad" like the ones shown in the picture. At lunch time I could confirm that it trully was true bread. The best I have eaten in some time!

This is an absolute gem of a bakery in Madrid. I wish I was here long enough to have come here more throughout my stay, but I’m at least happy to have had it once. I tried the almond croissant and it was divine. The staff was super kind and patient while we looked over everything and decided what we wanted to have.

Bread heaven! This bakery proves that all breads are not created equal! We tried all of the bakeries in our neighborhood and Vanille is our favorite by far. Even beats the fancy bakeries in Almagro.

The quality of the products is amazing.
The kind of the lady attending to the public is awful.
She is not rude. However, to be facing the public, you have to have "don de gentes" and unfortunately, she has really no clue how to take care of people. She should be more humble and nicer to the customers.
At the end, no customers have no business.

Santo has quietly become part of my routine. The bread is easily the best you’ll find in town. I already have my favorites (the cardamom bun and the canelé), but honestly, the best thing you can do is let yourself try something new each time. Walk in, breathe in the smell of fresh bread, pick something you’ve never had before, and enjoy it slowly. The staff are lovely and there’s a real warmth here, not just from the ovens. And the pastries… truly to die for.

This Panadería is a Hidden Gem in Madrid. Employees were truly kind and had better words that I have encountered for understanding their food. Quality is so invaluable. Texture was Crispy and buttery but not greasy and lean.

I’ve been here 3 times and every time the service has been absolutely lovely. I appreciate that they take their time with each customer to answer questions, give recommendations, and make comfortable conversation. Besides the amazing workers, their pastries and bread are top tier. I’m writing this after eating the Za’atar, Feta, and Sesame roll and I’m stunned. The coquito with the coconut and coffee combination also pleasantly surprised me. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here.

A great place for coffee and a pastry. The service is excellent, as are the pastries!
We had cafe con Leche, a palma and a postre con fruta. The palma was like a baked toasty bread that made us think if cotton candy were a pastry this is what it would be. The little fruit tart was superb and the coffee was excellent. One of the girls spoke excellent English and made ordering much easier than my bad Spanish was doing for us.
The antique mirrors are gorgeous too.

A fantastic dessert place with a lovely atmosphere. The desserts were absolutely delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. There is a great variety to choose from, and everything we tried was full of flavor. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to enjoy something sweet.

This bakery is a true gem. It makes you feel like you’ve discovered a special local treasure rather than just another tourist attraction. The atmosphere is authentic, welcoming, and full of character, and the quality of the baked goods speaks for itself. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the genuine charm of the area.
YB★★★★☆
Excellent pastries in a charming little shop. Their almond crossiant is splendid, flaky with sugar crusted crunchy bits filled with a rich oozing marzipan that isn’t too overwhelming
Adi★★★☆☆
I recently visited La Duquesita and tried the chocolate dessert and the turrón dessert. Both were made with high-quality ingredients—the creams were light, well-balanced, and not overly rich, which made them easy to enjoy. That said, the turrón dessert could have featured a stronger turrón flavour, and the chocolate dessert would have benefited from more filling, as it became too repetitive towards the end.
While the desserts themselves were excellent (5★ for food quality), the service significantly detracted from the experience (2★). Despite available seating, we weren’t attended to promptly, and the ordering process felt rushed.
Later, when we wanted to try some chocolate pralines, it was nearly impossible to get a waiter’s attention. At one point, I approached a staff member directly and was dismissed despite her not being occupied, and communication appeared limited when engaging with non-Spanish-speaking customers- a lack of attentiveness toward tourists or international visitors.
Overall, while the desserts are high quality, the service does not match the price point. I’d recommend taking your order to go—the interior is charming, but the experience of staying doesn’t justify it.

Went here a week ago. Tried searching it on maps just to make a review. The place was nice, and the food was mid. Although, I received terrible service. They insisted me to buy more (even I already ordered food and drinks). I did not intend to stay long, I just wanted to rest.
There was one staff that seemed annoyed or bothered that I was there. I felt discriminated, she was nice to everyone except me.
I don't want to make this review or the experience all "about me". But this is just rare time that I felt that way. The place may be nice, and this might only be an isolated case. Nevertheless, I am firm about it.

Very friendly staff who deal with me, despite my terrible Spanish, with a smile and a conversation. I love their blackberry mini-tarts and their coffee is pretty good. Small cute place, good service, not a lot of variety, but enough to get what you want, we had sweet cinnamon bread with cream cheese and fruit, which was really nice, tasted a little bit like French toast, toasted bread with avocado which I found tasty, for my son was it a bit hard, and a really good lemon pie! It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty).
The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.

Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

She went above and beyond to get every single detail just right, and it showed in the most beautiful way. The cake was not only stunning, but also incredibly delicious—our guests couldn’t stop talking about it!
You can really feel the care, creativity, and passion behind her work. I’m so grateful for such a special creation for such a meaningful celebration. I will definitely be ordering again and highly recommend her!

Wonderful and cozy Coffe/Bakery.
We had an amazing red velvet cake, a cupcake and tee for less than 7$.
The atmosphere is nice, quiet and cozy. The staff is friendly and you get free water+orange and ice as much as you want 🙂

The place is okay. The products although don’t look fresh at all but they taste good. I got the brownies as recommended from the reviews but it was so stiff, more like a hard cookie. The strawberry cheesecake tasted nicely. The oreo cheesecake as well was light. The tres leche was nice but it had a bit of an after-taste. Personally, I wouldn’t try it again!
Insider Tips for Visiting Bakeries Near Sorolla Museum
To make the most of your bakery tour, it helps to know how locals approach their daily bread and sweets. A little planning can save you from long lines and ensure you get the freshest items available. Here are some practical strategies to enhance your experience and help you eat like a true Madrileño.
Go early for the best selection. Many artisan bakeries bake their bread and pastries in the early morning hours. If you want a warm croissant or a specific type of sourdough loaf, arrive before noon. By late afternoon, the most popular items are often sold out.
Ask for the house specialty. Every good bakery has a signature item they are known for. Whether it is a specific type of "tarta" or a unique savory bread, asking the staff for their recommendation often leads to the best bite of your day. Do not be afraid to point if you do not speak Spanish.
Bring cash for small purchases. While many modern bakeries now accept credit cards, some traditional family-run shops still prefer cash for small transactions. Carrying a few euros ensures you won’t miss out on a delicious pastry simply because you lack the right payment method.
Understand the difference between "panadería" and "pastelería." A "panadería" focuses primarily on bread, while a "pastelería" specializes in sweets and cakes. Knowing which one you are entering helps you set the right expectations for the menu.
Take your treats to a nearby park. While many bakeries have seating, the area near the museum features lovely green spaces. Buying a few items to go and enjoying them outdoors is a wonderful way to rest your feet after walking through the galleries.
The area surrounding the Sorolla Museum offers a rich tapestry of flavors that reflect both tradition and innovation. Taking the time to explore these local businesses not only satisfies your hunger but also supports the artisans who keep Madrid’s culinary culture alive. Whether you prefer a crusty loaf of bread or a delicate pastry, you are sure to find something memorable just steps away from the art.
As you plan your visit, consider pairing your bakery stop with a leisurely walk through the nearby streets. The combination of world-class art, beautiful architecture, and exceptional baked goods creates a perfect afternoon in one of Madrid’s most charming districts.
