12 Best Bakeries and Pastry Shops near Sainte-Chapelle

A crisp, buttery croissant before exploring Gothic architecture, or a delicate fruit tart after admiring medieval stained glass—these are the quiet rituals that turn a Parisian itinerary into a genuine cultural experience. The area surrounding Sainte-Chapelle, nestled in the heart of the Île de la Cité and the Latin Quarter, is a dense network of historic streets and hidden culinary treasures. While the monument itself demands your awe, the surrounding neighborhood invites you to slow down and taste the city’s rich baking heritage.

Finding a truly exceptional bakery in a high-tourism zone can be tricky, as flashy storefronts often overshadow quiet artisans. You do not need to settle for mass-produced sandwiches or stale pastries simply because you are close to a major landmark. With a bit of local insight, you can find the places where Parisians themselves line up for their daily baguette or a special weekend gateau. The best spots balance technical mastery with a deep respect for French tradition.

The following guide is curated to help you navigate the sweet and savory landscape near this historic chapel. We have walked these cobblestone streets, tasted the sourdough, and examined the lamination of the butter in the croissants to bring you a list of reliable addresses. Whether you are looking for a quick snack to eat on a bench overlooking the Seine or a luxurious box of chocolates to take home, this list has you covered.

We prioritize quality, consistency, and the overall experience of the visit. From historic institutions that have been perfecting the baguette for decades to modern pastry chefs pushing the boundaries of flavor, the area offers a remarkable range of options. Understanding the difference between a boulangerie and a pâtisserie is key: the former focuses on bread and viennoiserie, while the latter specializes in elaborate desserts and sweet confections, though many shops excel at both.

Our selections are based on the quality of ingredients, the skill of the bakers, and proximity to Sainte-Chapelle, ensuring you do not have to wander too far from your sightseeing route. We understand that your time in Paris is precious, and a bad meal or bland pastry can be a disappointing detour. This curated list ensures every calorie spent during your trip is worth it, offering a mix of classic flavors and innovative creations.

We have also considered the practicalities of travel, noting which spots are best for a grab-and-go experience versus those with a bit of seating. While some locations are perfect for picking up a picnic to enjoy by the river, others are ideal for a brief rest stop with a coffee and an éclair. No matter your schedule, there is a perfect bite waiting just steps from the chapel’s soaring spires.

Read on to discover the bakeries that define this enchanting part of Paris. From the crunch of a perfectly scored baguette to the silky smoothness of a vanilla cream filling, these are the flavors that will linger in your memory long after you have returned home.

Very busy but the queues were moving quickly. There is no place to sit so its all take away. Delicious pastries with a lot of variety. We had a pistachio éclairs & a plain butter croissant for only 4.5£! Eclair was full of fresh, mildly sweet cream that tasted indulgent & pistachio-y. & the croissant was so light and flaky. Absolute bangers!
Kristy★★★★★
Wow. This place is still drawing a queue for the croissant award it won back in 2018... eight years ago! Is it still worth the hype? My answer is a definite yes. Keeping both the quality and the volume this consistent for so many years is no small feat. People simply wouldn't still be lining up if the croissants weren't exceptional. And let's be honest, there have been eight other winners since then, so it's not as if there aren't alternatives. I was there at about 9.00 am. There was a short queue and it moved surprisingly quickly. They've had years to perfect the system, and it shows. Don't let the line put you off. You won't be waiting long. I don't really understand the complaints about the lack of seating or atmosphere. It's next to a metro entrance and a market. It's a working bakery, people! Do what the French do. Grab your croissant, pick up a coffee nearby, then wander to the nearest park or along the river and mindfully enjoy one of the best croissants you'll ever eat. Bonus points for doing it without an influencer photo shoot in sight (looking at you, La Carette!). The croissants are handmade and baked throughout the day, so there's a good chance yours has come straight from the oven. Eat it immediately. Don't save it for later. This is one of those moments that's worth enjoying exactly as intended -- straight black and white paper bag. And at just €1.20? That's Parisian public service if you ask me. I'd happily line up again. TIP: Find 'Square Danielle Mitterrand' a tiny gated public-garden where you can eat your croissant in. Less than a 10min walk away. Do some google research on this wife of former French President François Mitterrand. She was a liaison officer in the French Resistance.

Went here due to tons of reviews saying this is the best place to grab a Croissant and it did a good job 🤓. The Croissant and Pain au Chocolate is crispy, freshly baked and buttery. It doesn't sugary like the one i had in Germany and that shocked me. The "real" Croissant is what my French friend told me about this place and the prices are very reasonable. 🥖 There was a staff also helping people getting the cake first when there is a long line. Perfect help👍🏻 However the baguette was a bit cold when i bought it, i couldn't feel the taste that i was hoping for and really hard to eat 🥲 But overall it still worth it.
Mohammed Alasad★★★★★
We tried the croissant, and it was absolutely delicious. It had a perfectly crispy exterior with a soft, airy interior and a rich, buttery flavor. It was served slightly cold, but it was still clear that it was made to a very high standard. I highly recommend trying it.
Princess Zabala★★★★★
Croissant tasted really good! Fresh & tasty! I would recommend it but make sure to pair it with something warm! Hot chocolate or coffee would be great! Line was not that Long since it was raining staffs were fast! But I would say not that friendly expect the one in the cashier! Maybe they were tired already but still! Got confused who was really serving but in the end it’s the Food that matters 😅

This was the first place I tried when I went to Paris and thought wow, we are in for an amazing trip of food. But I quickly found out how good this bakery is compared to the rest! Would highly recommend 💪 Only downside is the seating is limited so you may need to takeaway, but definitely still worth it.

My fave local boulangerie during my paris stay - always stopped by for the best baguette tradition and lemon tarts!! Good prices and always super sweet service. Will miss having it so close by!

Amazing pastries and sandwiches with an affordable price. I went 3 times during my visit to Paris, absolutely recommended!

I ate my absolute favorite pastry ever at this place the brioche de Caramel. Filled with a delicious caramel cream, lots of filling. The girl that served me recommended the bread and she was right, she was friendly and spoke multiple languages. 5/5

We are an Italian couple who love breakfast. We have tried several bakeries and we fully agree that this is the best in terms of quality and price. The only downside is that it is a bit cramped. It was closed this morning, so we went to another one that we won't name, and I can tell you that we all need this boulangerie because it is clearly superior in terms of quality and delicate flavors. I am critical, but this time, whenever I think of an excellent breakfast, they come to mind. With love from Italy, Andre & Lory ❤️🥐

This was a must-stop after Notre Dame. See it on Les Frenchies Facebook group and the hype was allllllll correct. The focaccia ham sandwich was splendid and the croissant with tomato and mozzarella was wonderful. But the star of this show is definitely the sweets. The Notre Dame pomme (Apple) and the peche (peach) were excellent. So very good. Highly recommend - 12 out of 10 for sure.
Hannah★★★★★
Incredible, the staff explained what each item had in it and described it, they answered all of our questions politely and clearly. In a perfect location to sit and watch the city pass. Views of Notre dame 😍 Clean bathroom A lovely little kitchen for children to play Inside eating space
Megan White★★★★★
Staff were absolutely fantastic, we only only manage a small amount of French but they could speak English and complimented my French ^^ The desserts were incredible, if you go here you need to try either Notre Dame (apple compote with cream and cake covered in white chocolate) or the Creme Brulee cake. The creme brulee one was the best ever!!!
Michael G★★★★★
These desserts are so delicious! Being right outside Notre Dame, I was skeptical that this was going to be a “touristy” spot…but I was wrong. SO GOOD! Our favorite was the Madagascar (if you like passion fruit). We purchased in the morning so we could guarantee having the ones we wanted for our nightly treat. I will note that they are about 7€ each, so a little pricey…but DELICIOUS!
Andrea Proietti★★★★★
The best I've tried in 4 days in Paris. The pain au chocolat aux amandres was soft, tasty and crunchy too. The Madagascar was well balanced, delicate and so exotic with coconut, mango passion fruit. Also the one with pistachio and rasperry is really well balanced in flavour. Nothing is improvised or left to chance! Hightly recommended!

We have been visited the Boulangerie porte da la Chapelle last day of our Paris journey. Lady behind the counter was very polite, patient and helpfull. Everything we bought was amazingly fresh and unbeliveble tasty. Others has been look the same. I can highly recomend this Boulangerie to visit and belive you will be satisfied as we are. After seeing the long line outside, we knew this place had to be good and it definitely was! Unfortunately, they had already sold out of the plain croissants, so we went for a chocolate croissant instead. It turned out to be the best chocolate croissant I've ever had - light, fluffy, and with perfectly distributed chocolate. Everything else in the bakery looked delicious as well. Card payment is accepted. Definitely worth the wait!
Hazel★★★★★
Life changing, because croissants will never taste this good after we leave Paris. Came at 9am on a Thursday and there was no line. Bestest flaky croissants. There’s one small table with three chairs where you can sit and enjoy a quick breakfast. Wish we live in Paris so we can try everything!
Asineth★★★★★
What a wonderful boulangerie! the staff are always so kind and the products are the best I've ever had - and I try to go new places every time to really make a comprehensive survey 😉 The croissants, pain au chocolat, and pain aux raisins are hands down the best I've had in each category (in over a decade of coming to France as often as possible), and the staff is incredibly effiicient but also kind and patient - they work through their ever-present line of fans quickly, but you never feel rushed when it's your turn. Truly cannot say enough nice things about this fantastic place. it was funny, on my second visit this trip on a Sunday morning the entire city seemed quiet and asleep, but the line outside the boulangerie was long and active (and very quick)...and as an added bonus, it's kind of a fun puzzle trying to find it 😅
Tara Konya★★★★★
Best croissant in Paris! Perfectly flaky on the outside, buttery and tender on the inside. I’m still dreaming about this buttery goodness. Thank you, Eating Europe, for introducing us to this gem! 🥐🇫🇷
Anna★★★★☆
The baguette was slightly tough on the outside but nice and chewy on the inside. The croissant was incredibly buttery—so much so that the paper bag was actually soaked with butter! You can definitely tell they don't skimp on the butter. It might feel a bit greasy if you aren't a big fan of butter, but if you're looking for a very rich, buttery croissant, this is the spot. Also, there’s only one seat outside, so it’s best to think of it as a takeout-only shop.

Fantastic bakery with creative range of desserts. I had the chocolate cake with hazelnut dacquoise, puffed rice praline, Bahibé cream, and hazelnut mascarpone chantilly cream, and it was absolutely outstanding. The combination of textures was ideal: the hazelnut dacquoise gave it a delicate nutty base, the puffed rice praline added a crunch, and the creams made the whole dessert smooth, rich, and luxurious. I would happily return here to try other desserts. This place totally worth the hype.
Shruti Kapoor★★★★★
They have the most amazing croissants. If you go early in the morning, it’s fresh, warm and the best. I ate the croissant right on the street, and it was so delicious, I had to go back in and buy another one. It’s a small boulangerie, no place to sit. Grab and go!
Michael Kan★★★★★
This was the best croissant for me in Paris after trying six or seven boulangeries. The croissant has a nice soft butterier interior. The cheesy bread with sausage was also quite good too.
mohamed abbas★★★★★
I tried both the croissant and the famous Roulé Sésame Noir at Boulangerie Utopie. The croissant was very good — soft, buttery and delicious — but for me it was missing a little of that crisp, flaky texture I really look for. So although I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t put it in my personal top 5 croissants in Paris. But the Roulé Sésame Noir is a completely different story. It’s difficult to even identify exactly what makes it so good. The balance of sweetness, softness and crispness, together with that distinctive touch of sesame, works incredibly well. Every bite has different textures and flavours, and somehow everything comes together perfectly. It’s one of those pastries that doesn’t just taste good — it leaves you genuinely happy and, for a few minutes, in a completely different world. For me, the Roulé Sésame Noir is absolutely the reason to visit Utopie. I would definitely come back for it.
Vince★★★★☆
Another day, another bakery to visit! We checked out this bakery and picked out two things to share: the sesame elcair and pain suisse. I enjoyed both of the items, but preferred the sesame eclair more. It was a nice and sweet taste infused with the black sesame flavor. The pain suisse was very flakey and filled with chocolate. It was also quite heavy, you should definitely share this!

BY FAR the best baguette tradicion and croissant burre we had in Paris. The baguette was piping hot, crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside.
SC★★★★☆
Great patisserie, to try some french classics! We had the millefeuille, a chou bun, coffee eclair, and canneles. Unfortunately, the canneles were quite tough and chewy (hopefully not a common thing for this patisserie), but everything else was great. Would definitely try again next trip
Connery Roberts★★★★★
We were tourists from Canada and we speak French although not as good as French people but they were so friendly and they really made you feel comfortable. It was really busy but the food was absolutely incredible. It was by far the best food I had on my trip to Europe. The bread was so fresh and the vanilla flan was the absolute most delectable thing ever. I would highly recommend this place. It really is just a hole in the wall place. A really feel good place. There are no chairs or at least very few but just sitting on the curb beside the shop eating their sandwiches and deserts was the best feeling ever. 5/5.
Nuria Yeste★★★★☆
I came for a couple of baguettes to take home and a ham and cheese baguette. Both were really good, I had the baguettes next day, just a bit toasted, and they still tasted great. Will need to try their baked goods next time.

Best pain suisse in the world. I usually do not even like or choose pain suisse because often it is too sweet, cream is bad, lamination is not great, but THIS ONE IS THE BEST and i could not imagine how it could ever get better than this. It is cooked to perfection i do not know how they achieved such perfection. The top is not only crispy and the light wash of sugar on top makes it crack almost like creme brulee. The lamination and pastry dough is delicious. The chocolate is the perfect balance, not too sweet not too bitter not too rich but not flat. The bottom layer is crunchy, you have all these elements coming together is perfect harmony to create a flavourful and texturally mind blowing experience.

Love this place so much. All are yummy. The best Mille Feuille aux fruits for me, fullfilled my trip. Croissant 🥐 is truly lovely. Kouign-amann is not that sweet but crispy. Eclair also 👍🏻. Price is very reasonable! Want to stay there for having them everyday. 😘🥰

This is another award winning boulangerie for their croissant. The croissant was great quality as well and I enjoyed giving it a try. The croissant was a bit smaller than others, but it was still delicious. If you're in the area looking for pastries, they would definitely satisfy the cravings, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit.

A renowned pâtisserie, especially after being featured in Emily in Paris, so of course I had to stop by and try it for myself. I ordered a pain au chocolat, and it definitely did not disappoint. Perfectly flaky, buttery, and fresh, exactly what you hope for when grabbing a pastry in Paris. The chocolate was rich without being overwhelming, and the balance between crisp layers and soft interior was just right. Sometimes the famous spots live up to the hype, and this was one of them.

Their quiche is pretty good, althought the outside needs to be cooked nore. Their baguette with cereals ia delicious. The sandwich however... Is such a scam. It is oractically empty on the inside, it only has tuna on the borders so that you think it ia full. Gross arnaque

We stumbled upon this little walk in cafe and it was super. Fresh baguette sandwiches, delicious homemade quiches and cakes/cookies/patisserie. A €9.50 formule for baguette sandwich/quiche/croque monsieur, drink and muffin/cookie can’t be beaten in the centre of Paris. It was a great lunch stop. Merci!

[Only for the brunch buffet] I tried their brunch formula for €29.90 and overall had a mixed experience. The concept is nice: you get unlimited access to a sweet buffet with a small selection of their pastries like croissants, cheesecake, and brownies, plus one savory dish of your choice (from four options), fresh orange juice, and a hot drink. 🥐☕️🍊 The sweet items were definitely tasty and well-made, which is expected from a bakery of this level. However, the buffet selection is quite limited, so the “all-you-can-eat” aspect loses some of its appeal after one round. The savory options were also underwhelming and felt a bit minimal. 🍽️ The atmosphere on Sunday morning was very noisy and crowded, and the staff was overwhelmed. 😕 Overall, the quality of the pastries is good, but the limited variety, chaotic ambiance, and average savory options make it feel slightly overpriced for what you get. Still worth trying once if you love pastries, but there’s room for improvement

Bright, bustling bakery with sweet and savory pastries as well as coffee and tea drinks. We enjoyed their corrugette crumble and toasted veggie sandwich. Their cookies were great too. They have many tables inside and friendly helpful staff behind the counter. This is a reliable standby in this area is downtown.

This was an absolute highlight of our Sunday brunch. We truly enjoyed their rich, perfectly brewed coffee and the incredible selection of pastries.. fresh, flaky, and beautifully crafted. Everything tasted as amazing as it looked. The atmosphere was lively yet cozy, making it the perfect place to relax and indulge in a classic Parisian brunch experience. Definitely a spot worth visiting again.

I decided to visit this place after seeing so many positive reviews. The pistachio roll wasn’t quite what I expected — it wasn’t very sweet and felt a little dry for my personal taste. However, the latte was really delicious. The staff were kind and welcoming, and I really liked the cozy atmosphere of the shop.

I visited Du Pain et des Idées, and this bakery holds a special place in my heart. Every bread and pastry I tried was outstanding, and during my stay in Paris, I found myself coming back almost every day. The smell of freshly baked bread fills the shop, creating a wonderful atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Whether you choose a simple loaf or one of their famous pastries, the quality is consistently excellent. For me, this bakery became one of the highlights of my time in Paris, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

Beautiful spot but average pastries now. I remember loving this but now with heightened standards it is just ok. Specifically the croissant has less air than I remember and crumbles more. The chasson aux pommes was weird too, with a film over the apple. So yes the dough is good but the rest is nah.

Been coming here since years. The place will always be very special to me as it reminds me of my first trip to Paris with my late father. The aroma, the taste of slowly and perfectly baked Croissants and other breads and the warmth of the team has stayed the same, if not better. It's every bite worth the hype. Every time, I come to Paris, a visit to Du Painet des Idées is a must. And, I am never disappointed. It's not only a bakery or a 'touristy' spot: it is the true essence of Paris - a feeling of pure joy. The staff is very friendly, service is outstanding and interior is authentic Parisian. Absolutely love their powder blue packaging, so much like the clear skies on a quiet afternoon. Paris is dotted with some of the best bakeries in the world, and while I have travelled to many countries and tried Croissants and patisseries world over, the doors of Du Pain et des Idées will always be like coming home. Flan Boulanger,Mouna Au Sucre,Escargot Aux Pralines,Escargot Pistache Chocolat are all great choices with amazing taste. However, their classic Croissant is my all time favourite.

I was sent here by Claude - and other lists claiming it’s one of the best in Paris. The bakery did not disappoint, I had the Suiss and it was crispy and gooey in all the right places. I wished they served iced coffees here, it was 35 degrees plus when I went. But they were kind enough to direct me ‘next door’ which had a FANTASTIC iced latte. There were lots of goodies here, will try to return.

We stopped by Boulangerie Du Pain et Des Idées after seeing it recommended online. We tried the pistachio chocolate escargot and a croissant with chocolate and banana. The pastries were solid and well made, but the pricing was honestly shocking. Easily double what we’ve paid at equally good or better bakeries across Paris, and we’ve been here many times over the years. Nothing we had was bad, but there was a clear “tourist tax” at play for a place that has gone viral. In a city full of excellent boulangeries, it’s hard to justify going out of your way for pastries that are comparable to many others at half the price (or less). If you happen to be nearby and are curious, fine. But for visitors planning a special stop, there are countless neighborhood bakeries that deliver just as much quality, if not more, without the premium pricing and are much closer to where most people are staying. Look for a boulangerie without a long tourist line and everybody speaking anything but French. There you have a making of a local, non “touristy” bakery. This was not it. Update: having gone to other, closeby bakeries, I realize how outrageously overpriced these were, even compared to similar bakeries. Definitely go somewhere else.

Tips for Choosing the Best Bakery Near Sainte-Chapelle

Navigating the Parisian bakery scene requires a bit of know-how, especially when you are surrounded by the tourist-heavy streets of the 1st and 4th arrondissements. To ensure you are spending your euros on truly artisanal products rather than industrial imitations, you should look for a few key indicators of quality. Use these practical tips to discern the masters from the mediocre and to elevate your tasting experience while exploring the area.

  1. Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign: Authentic bakeries often display a sign indicating they knead and bake their dough on-site. If you see the words "Artisan Boulanger" or "Fait Maison," it is a legal guarantee that the bread was not brought in frozen from a factory.
  2. Check the Oven Schedule: The French take their bread very seriously, and freshness is measured in hours, not days. Ask what time the next batch of baguettes comes out of the oven. A warm, crackling crust is the ultimate reward for a little patience.
  3. Observe the Color of the Pastry: You can tell a lot about a croissant or pain au chocolat by its color. Look for a deep, golden-brown hue that suggests a long, slow fermentation and proper caramelization of the butter. Pale pastries are often a sign of under-baking or low-quality fats.
  4. Prioritize Seasonal Flavors: The best pastry chefs change their menus with the seasons. If you see a strawberry tart in December or a chestnut cake in July, be wary. Look for shops showcasing the fruits and flavors of the current month to ensure the freshest ingredients.
  5. Beware of the "Tourist Trap" Markup: Proximity to a monument often correlates with inflated prices and lowered quality. Walk just one or two blocks away from the main entrance of Sainte-Chapelle to find the spots where locals shop. The price of a baguette should generally be around €1.20 to €1.50.
  6. Ask for a "Tradition": When buying a baguette, specifically ask for a "Tradition." By French law, this specific loaf can only contain flour, water, salt, and yeast—no additives or preservatives. It is the purest expression of the baker’s skill.

Exploring the bakeries near Sainte-Chapelle is about more than just satisfying hunger; it is an essential part of understanding Parisian culture. The craftsmanship found in these small shops is the result of years of training and a deep-seated national pride in the art of living well. Taking the time to seek out a high-quality bakery connects you to the rhythm of the city in a way that visiting a monument alone cannot achieve.

As you continue your journey through the Île de la Cité, let the scent of fresh bread guide you. Whether you choose a classic butter croissant, a complex multi-layered dessert, or a simple, rustic loaf of sourdough, you are participating in a tradition that has been the heartbeat of Paris for centuries. Enjoy the discovery, and savor every bite.
