Stepping out of the Paris Métro at Opéra, the visual impact of the Palais Garnier is often enough to make you forget everything else. The gilded statues, the marble columns, and the constant hum of the city create an overwhelming sensory experience. Yet, once you have admired the architecture and snapped your photos, a different kind of hunger tends to set in. Fortunately, the streets surrounding this iconic landmark are a haven for some of the most refined baking in the capital.
The 9th arrondissement, along with the neighboring 2nd and 8th, is not just a business district; it is a neighborhood where artisans still knead dough by hand in the early hours. Here, the legacy of French pâtisserie is taken very seriously, with recipes passed down through generations. Whether you are looking for a flaky croissant to start your day or a complex dessert to end an evening at the opera, the area delivers.
For the traveler, navigating the tourist-heavy zones near major monuments can be risky. It is easy to fall into a trap of overpriced, mediocre food designed for a quick turnover. However, if you know where to look, you can find the authentic spots where local office workers line up for their morning baguette and where chefs compete for the title of Best Baguette in Paris.
This guide focuses on the boulangeries and pâtisseries that prioritize quality ingredients, such as AOP butter and Valrhona chocolate. We have scoured the side streets, from the grand Haussmann boulevards to the hidden passages, to bring you a curated list. The goal is to help you skip the guesswork and head directly to the counters where the magic happens.
Understanding French bakery culture is key to enjoying it. A "Boulangerie" strictly refers to a shop that bakes its bread on-site, while a "Pâtisserie" focuses on sweet pastries and cakes. Many of the best establishments are a hybrid of both, offering savory breads alongside intricate desserts. This distinction matters because it often indicates the level of craftsmanship you are about to taste.
In this article, we will explore the top destinations within walking distance of the Palais Garnier. We have evaluated them based on the flakiness of their viennoiseries, the creativity of their pastry chefs, and the consistency of their bread. You will find a mix of historic institutions and modern innovators, all within a ten to fifteen-minute walk of the opera house.
Whether you are seeking a quick bite before a matinee or a box of macarons to take back to your hotel, this list has you covered. Put on your walking shoes, bring your appetite, and prepare to discover the sweetest side of the Right Bank.

This place is a must visit for those who enjoy food and wine shopping. Great quality produce on every floor and the cave du vin is a must see for some crazy expensive French wines. We supped some lovely champagnes and ate some great (French) cheese.

This was by far the most interesting section of Galeries Lafayette for me. The variety on offer is incredible, with something to suit every taste and every meal of the day. In addition to the food counters and restaurants, you’ll also find a huge selection of culinary products, from spices and gourmet ingredients to delicatessen items and speciality foods.
It quickly became my favourite area within Galeries Lafayette. The aromas, atmosphere, and overall experience are simply outstanding. To be honest, it’s incredibly difficult to leave without buying something or stopping for a bite to eat.

Whenever I visit Paris, I find myself returning here—sometimes to pick up a new set of tableware or a unique cup, but mostly because the experience is so seamless. What keeps me coming back is how perfectly curated the selection is; you can take in a vast array of high-quality products at a glance without feeling overwhelmed.
The layout is designed for genuine comfort, allowing you to explore a diverse range of culinary delights and handle tax-free shopping all in one place. It makes the logistics of shopping feel effortless. I was also impressed by the staff; every individual I encountered was kind and attentive. A practical note for fellow travelers: the restrooms on the 3rd floor are impeccably clean and well-maintained.
The basement food hall, in particular, is a space where I always want to linger a little longer. If you are someone who truly appreciates food and ingredients, do not miss this place. It remains one of the finest spots in the city.

Book your time slot in advance before your visit to walk on the glass lookout. There is also a coffee/bubble tea shop on the second floor with seating and a view of the dome. Additionally, there is a seating area on the first floor with the same view. The 6th floor has a terrace overlooking the Opera. Must visit!

Hope you have a sweet tooth because France’s finest confectionery and chocolate makers have stands here. It reminds me of Harrod’s food hall in London or Penn Station on NY. You can get the giant croissant, or fine market items like foie gras, truffles and wine. Worth a look. Come in the morning. The smell of fresh pastries is mind blowing.

After having our first pastéis de nata in Lisbon a couple of years ago, we have been searching for great ones on our subsequent trips abroad. Little did we know that we would find some of the best at this Paris location.
The shop was clean, modern, and inviting, and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. They even took the time to wish my wife a happy birthday, which made the experience even more special. Thank you to everyone working that day, especially the person behind the counter creating these absolutely delicious treats.
We will definitely be back the next time we’re in Paris and highly recommend this location to anyone looking for an authentic and memorable pastel de nata experience.

honestly AMAZING. I’ve tried both the coffee and the traditional one. They were both incredibile but the traditional one is possibly the best pastel de nata I’ve ever had

Cozy coffee in front of the Opera Garnier. The famous pastel de nata is really a great unique experience, and you’ve got to taste it (you’ll probably say that this is even better than the original pastel de Belém). The crew is really gentle and lovely! Nice place!

Such a cozy cafe! Andreas was so helpful explaining everything & made me feel welcomed. I love cinnamon and Andreas suggested addding them to the custard tarts for a more authentic experience! I found my new favorite treat thanks to him!

Fresh out of the lab and still warm 🥧✨ Manteigaria (Opéra location) bakes right next door so you basically watch your pastéis de nata come to life before it hits your plate. Now — I’ve had the OG in Lisbon (Belém), so I came in skeptical… but this one earned it. Crisp, caramelized top, custard that’s still a little jiggly in the middle. Not Belém, but not far off either. I’ll be back

Absolutely amazing experience for my daughter’s 10th birthday. Very girly, beautiful aesthetic, cute photo props for social, and they played Happy Birthday for her over a speaker. Provided a candle and lighter. They think of everything. Service was great and the cake and cupcakes were so delicious. Definitely make this a stop, especially if you’re celebrating a special birthday.

Avoid this place if you value being treated with respect.
I came here intending to buy a cake, but the customer service was appalling. The staff member in the photo was rude, dismissive, and even told me to leave the shop. The contrast in how he treated customers was striking, he was noticeably polite and friendly with female customers, while being cold and disrespectful toward man.
I left without buying anything. There are plenty of bakeries in Paris that offer both good products and respectful customer service. I’d recommend spending your money somewhere that values every customer equally.
Thanks and go on your own risk!!!

We had planned to go to the bakery on the same street, but saw the huge queue and didn't want to wait. So we tried Besties.
It was Valentine's Day, hence the staff were VERY busy putting together packages for the lovers out there.
Their cakes and pastries looked fantastic.
Ordered some drinks and the servers were enthusiastic and very friendly.
Only issue was the restaurant was not heated and with the constant queue of people coming in or waiting, the door remained open for most of the time we were there. Let's just say it wasn't warm inside.
The Staff were awesome !

Delicious!
We came after breakfast and were too full to eat, but the pastries looked so beautiful! Leticia was so bubbly, warm and genuinely lovely. She recommended a few for us to try - “Came back later, I’ll wait for you!” -she said.
We came back not just for the pastries, but because we really liked her! We tried the Cheesecake Nature, Vanille and La Cabosse — all delicious. Honestly, I think they’re better than Cédric Grolet’s, and much more reasonably priced. 😊

I was very hesitant to purchase at first, my daughter had something similar yesterday and it was not good. BUT Alice and Yagmur told us to trust them that theirs was the best and I can say they were right. I purchased a mango, peanut, rose and the a flan. I can tell you they are the BEST we had our entire trip. We will definitely be back for more. Thank you so much Alice and Yagmur for your assistance and making my daughter very happy.
Aysha Hassan★★★☆☆
We had the chocolate fruit and the mango each was for 9,90 euro but it fully lived up to our expectations. The mango had an exotic taste but balanced with the hint of fresh coriander pieces in the fruit filling, which was within the cream filling underneath the colourful chocolate shell. The chocolate fruit had a layer of chocolate mousse with chocolate fudge and a layer of cake in it. The fudge had salted crunchy caramel biys in it.
Furthermore this place is very lively, nice and helpful staff.
All in all, this definitely lived up to my expectations

Black sesame eclair is so bomb. Matcha eclair also good. They are all quite sweet but having one instead of all 3 like I did is perfect as dessert. These are my favorite eclairs in the world. Mochi goma anpain was pretty good but a little greasy so I wouldn’t get it again if the eclairs were an option.

I think I'm just spoiled by the Asian bakeries in nyc but | wasn't a huge fan of this spot. We came around 8:15 am and the shop was still taking out some pastries and items for the day. It smelled scrumptious and there were plenty of pastry selections from buns and muffins to cakes and cookies. They have a lot of Matcha-forward pastry items, which was nice to see.
I ordered a classic Latte with a Chocolate Croissant and a Matcha Muffin. The matcha taste in the muffin tasted artificial imo, which ruined the experience. The chocolate croissant and Latte were pretty standard. I also tried the Matcha Bun and Matcha Eclair from my brother and they were sweeter than l'd like.
Staff was overall friendly and spoke minimal English. There were still a good amt of customers coming in and out, so it still gets good foot traffic despite my opinion of the taste. Can't beat the Asian bakeries in

Best croissant of my life!
While trying to hide from the pouring heavy spring rain I ran across what looked like a small not that fancy looking place. But something about it felt warming and I went in.
I was told the tales of "you never had a croissants if you did not have one in Paris". I was not expecting much as this placed did not look fancy, and I thought ok, first time it will be ok, I am sure I will have many more that will be amazing, but I was wrong.
Nothing cane close the beauty of this croissant! Other places I tried felt blunt, either not crusty or not fluffy enough.
The old man running this place is a master baker. Now only one thing keeps me alive in London, the thought that I want to go back and try the rest of his things, can't wait!

What do you bring when you're invited?
I'm always asked to bring desserts 🍰 since I don't drink wine 🍷.
When I go to Paris 🗼, I often have dinner at my aunt's, since she's the main reason for my trips there. So I get to buy lots of desserts in Paris 🇫🇷.
Since my aunt usually cooks very sophisticated meals for us, I try to buy nice desserts too, instead of just going into any bakery and buying a random cake. TBH, that happens sometimes, when I'm in a hurry, but I don't like that.
Last time we visited, we went to buy a cake at Galerie Lafayette Gourmet. There you can find lots of great bakery stalls and after browsing and arguing with my wife and son about it for 1/2 hour, we decided to buy a fruit tart from Yann Couvreur. Why a fruit tart? Because we thought everybody would like it (and we were right), as opposed to more sophisticated cakes with so many ingredients that you can be sure that one of the guests won't be able to eat it. Why Yann Couvreur? Well, cause this is where we found the tart we liked 😅, with the right size and not too expensive.
Don't get me wrong, at Galeries Lafayette Gourmet, everything is expensive. But this one seemed more reasonable than others. 👍
We all liked the look of that tart, with so many blueberries 🫐 but some fantasy would have been nice too. Honestly, it looked delicious but the appearance was kind of dull. 😑
That said, taste-wise, that was perfect, with the right balance of fruit, dough and almond cream. Plus it didn't break when we cut it which is something that's very hard to achieve. Clearly this was baked by an expert.
That tart was sold for 5 people and it was just the right size for 6, which brings the price per person to €7 approx. It's above average but nothing too extravagant either. Plus this tart was one of the best ones I've had in years, and it came from Yann Couvreur, one of the most renowned pastry chefs in France. 👍

I paired the crookie with an iced latter, and it was such a great start to my day. The iced latter was really good, and the crookie was delicious - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and incredibly filling. It was more satisfying than I expected.
Overall, a lovely sweet breakfast treat.

Wonderful experience at Maison Louvard! This family-owned gem is exactly what you want in a bakery and café. The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive — they made you feel welcome from the moment we walked in.
The food was excellent. Everything was fresh and flavourful, and you can tell real care goes into every item. The bakery display is absolutely beautiful — all the pastries look amazing — but the Cross Sant cookie stole the show. It's genuinely the best I've had. The perfect balance of texture and taste.
What impressed me most was how the family clearly runs this place with pride. That dedication shows in every detail. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in the area. Highly recommended!

I visited the Maison Louvard Boulangerie on a Saturday around 8:15 AM. The boulangerie wasn't busy and we got the crookie (cookie croissant) and a pastry called "Le Tourbillon," which was filled with peaches. You can take away or eat the pastries there, but the price is higher if you eat there. The crookie lives up to the hype. The croissant was extremely crispy and flakey and the cookie filling was gooey like a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. The "Le Tourbillon" pastry is similar to a cruffin shape and was filled with peaches (and maybe a custard). It was also excellent and the peaches were so delicious. The boulangerie was definitely worth the stop. I would recommend and will totally come back the next time I'm in Paris. Note the boulangerie is not open on Sundays.

Maison Louvard is honestly all style and very little substance. The space itself is well designed—modern, visually pleasing, with nice furniture and lighting that make it feel trendy and Instagram-ready. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end.
We went specifically to try their famous “krookie,” and it was moderate at best. It wasn’t warm and tasted like it had been sitting out overnight, which was especially disappointing considering we visited in the morning. That alone was surprising, but even more so because nearly everywhere else we’ve eaten in France has been exceptional—this place stood out, and not in a good way.
The worst part of the experience was the service. The black male server was openly rude and clearly in need of customer service and hospitality training. He became visibly upset when I was taking pictures and proceeded to shoo me away, which is completely unacceptable in any culture. I also witnessed him get angry with an older woman simply for asking a question. It was uncomfortable to watch and made the environment feel unwelcoming.
To make matters worse, it was very clear that tourists are not appreciated here. The woman behind the counter was also rude when asked a question in English, reinforcing the feeling that unless you’re French, you’re an inconvenience. That kind of attitude leaves a lasting negative impression, no matter how nice the decor is.
Vibes: 4/5
Food: 2/5
Service: 1/5
Paris has so much incredible food and so many welcoming cafés. Save your time (and money) and go literally anywhere else—this spot is not worth it.

What a wonderful boulangerie! the staff are always so kind and the products are the best I've ever had - and I try to go new places every time to really make a comprehensive survey 😉
The croissants, pain au chocolat, and pain aux raisins are hands down the best I've had in each category (in over a decade of coming to France as often as possible), and the staff is incredibly effiicient but also kind and patient - they work through their ever-present line of fans quickly, but you never feel rushed when it's your turn.
Truly cannot say enough nice things about this fantastic place.
it was funny, on my second visit this trip on a Sunday morning the entire city seemed quiet and asleep, but the line outside the boulangerie was long and active (and very quick)...and as an added bonus, it's kind of a fun puzzle trying to find it 😅

Best croissant in Paris! Perfectly flaky on the outside, buttery and tender on the inside. I’m still dreaming about this buttery goodness. Thank you, Eating Europe, for introducing us to this gem! 🥐🇫🇷
Anna★★★★☆
The baguette was slightly tough on the outside but nice and chewy on the inside. The croissant was incredibly buttery—so much so that the paper bag was actually soaked with butter! You can definitely tell they don't skimp on the butter.
It might feel a bit greasy if you aren't a big fan of butter, but if you're looking for a very rich, buttery croissant, this is the spot.
Also, there’s only one seat outside, so it’s best to think of it as a takeout-only shop.

their croissants are really perfect. They are bigger than usual croissants. Of course, they are more expensive than other bakeries. However, they pack everything nicely so that you don't get crushed. Arm yourself with patience. There is always a line, but they are well organized and everything goes quickly. The staff is extremely friendly and the bakery is very clean. For every recommendation. Note: they work from 09:00 in the morning

Stopped here for a well-deserved treat after walking over 15 000 steps through Paris during the canicule. The shop was spotless and elegant, almost like a jewelry boutique. Only 3 customers were allowed inside at a time, so there was a line outside.
All the pastries looked like miniature works of art. I chose the Fleur Coco Passion. It was too gorgeous to eat… but I could not resist, and it was love at first bite. The flavors were wonderfully fresh and perfectly balanced. Pure bliss!
The only downside was the lack of a seating area for customers. After over 15 000 steps through the Paris heat, all I dreamed of was enjoying this gorgeous pastry while sitting in a cool, air-conditioned room. A chair, some AC, and a Fleur Coco Passion… that would be perfection!
Overall, a beautiful pastry experience that was worth the wait and the steps.

I arrived at around 8:59 and were able to get in by 9:16, so the wait was not too bad at all. The staff member managing the queue outside was very friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience start on a positive note.
I picked up a selection including the Fleur Banoffee, Fleur Mangue, pain au chocolat, croissants, and a pain suisse. The pastries were definitely the highlight. The croissants were soft and buttery inside with a light crisp on the outside, and the pain au chocolat was nicely layered and very enjoyable.
The cakes are on the pricier side at around €18 each. The Fleur Mangue was not overly sweet, which was nice, but overall felt a bit more ordinary than expected.
The Fleur Banoffee, on the other hand, was much more interesting. It had great layers of flavour and texture, with a mix of soft, creamy elements and little crunchy bits throughout. It made each bite more enjoyable and added a nice contrast.
In total I spent €72, which feels reasonable for the location and name. Overall, a nice experience, especially for the viennoiserie and the Banoffee, though not everything fully lived up to the hype.

Located near the iconic Opéra district in Paris, Cédric Grolet Opéra truly lives up to its international reputation when it comes to desserts. Every pastry looks like a piece of edible art, crafted with incredible precision, creativity, and flavor. From the moment you walk in, it is easy to understand why people from around the world wait in line just to experience these famous creations. The fruit-shaped desserts are absolutely mind-blowing, both visually and in taste. Each bite tastes fresh, balanced, and luxurious without being overwhelmingly sweet. The textures are layered perfectly, and you can tell an immense amount of technique goes into every item they create.
The presentation alone is worth the visit. Watching the pastry chefs work behind the counter adds to the overall experience and gives the shop a high-end yet exciting atmosphere. Whether you order one of the signature fruit desserts, a tart, or one of the seasonal specialties, the quality is undeniable. This is the kind of dessert experience that makes you remember Paris long after your trip is over.
That said, the customer service unfortunately did not match the level of the pastries. The female staff members who was the one serving us and everyone else on that day came across as very dry and uninterested while serving customers. At a place known worldwide for luxury desserts and presentation, you would expect the staff to be enthusiastic and welcoming, especially when explaining the pastries to guests who may be visiting for the first time. Instead, the interaction felt rushed and somewhat cold, which took away from the overall experience. A warmer attitude and more passion while describing the desserts would make a huge difference and better reflect the world-class reputation of the shop.
Despite the service issue, the desserts themselves are absolutely phenomenal and among the best you can find in Paris. If you appreciate pastry artistry and premium desserts, this place is still worth visiting at least once.

A Two-Hour Dessert Experience Worth Every Minute!!
If you’re in Paris and love desserts, the afternoon tea at Cedric Grolet Opéra is an experience, not just a meal or dessert.
The experience begins with your choice of one hot and one cold beverage, followed by delicate sandwiches. As vegetarians, we enjoyed adorable tiny baguettes with cucumber and cheese, while the non-vegetarian option featured salmon and caviar that everyone around us seemed to love.
Then comes the main event - the famous desserts, thoughtfully served in mini sizes, allowing you to sample so many incredible flavors. We tried the tart grapefruit, strawberry meringue, Alphonso mango, the famous vanilla, matcha, chocolate, and hazelnut. Every bite was beautiful and bursting with flavor.
To finish, you’re served tiny bite-sized cookies that were crisp on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside, in both chocolate and peanut butter flavors.
We purposely hadn’t eaten all day, and it ended up being the perfect amount of food. The best part? You have two full hours to relax, take breaks between courses, and truly savor every bite. Elegant, creative, and delicious - an unforgettable Parisian experience. ☕🍓🥭🍫🇫🇷
Insider Tips for Visiting Parisian Bakeries
Navigating a French bakery can be intimidating if you are unfamiliar with the etiquette and the rhythm of the day. While the pastries are beautiful, knowing how to order and when to go will significantly improve your experience. These practical tips will help you blend in with the locals and ensure you get the freshest products available.
Go early for the best selection. French bakeries bake in cycles throughout the day, but the widest variety of viennoiseries—like croissants and pain au chocolat—is usually available between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. If you are looking for bread, arriving just before lunch or around 4:00 PM often catches the second bake.
Greet the staff immediately. In France, it is considered extremely rude to walk into a shop without saying "Bonjour" to the person behind the counter. Always greet them first, wait for a response, and then state your order. When leaving, a polite "Merci, au revoir" is expected.
Ask for a "Tradition" baguette. If you want the highest quality bread, avoid the standard white baguette and ask for a "Tradition française." This designation is protected by law and guarantees the bread contains no additives or frozen dough. It is usually only slightly more expensive but offers a vastly superior crust and crumb.
Carry cash or a contactless card. While most modern bakeries near the Palais Garnier accept credit cards, many have a minimum spend for card transactions, often around 5 to 10 euros. If you are just buying a single croissant, having a few coins or a contactless payment method will make the transaction smoother for everyone.
Don’t touch the pastries. Unlike some self-service cafes, in a traditional French bakery, you point to what you want and the staff will retrieve it for you. Touching the bread or pastries with your hands is a major faux pas. Keep your hands behind your back or at your sides while pointing.
Order in French if possible. While many bakers near the tourist district speak some English, attempting a few words goes a long way. Learn the phrase "Je voudrais…" (I would like…) and simply point if you are unsure of the pronunciation. The effort is always appreciated and often results in friendlier service.
Exploring the culinary landscape around the Palais Garnier is about more than just eating; it is about participating in a daily ritual that defines Parisian life. The contrast between the opulence of the opera house and the simple, flour-dusted counters of a local boulangerie captures the essence of the city. It is a place where high art and daily sustenance exist side by side, both demanding a level of respect and dedication.
As you walk back toward the grand staircase of the Opera, carrying a paper bag filled with warm pastries, you are holding a piece of French heritage. Take the time to sit on one of the steps of the Palais Garnier or in the nearby Galeries Lafayette viewing area to enjoy your purchase. The taste of a perfectly laminated croissant, baked just minutes earlier, is the perfect complement to the architectural grandeur surrounding you.
