10 Pharmacies in Arrecife

Finding a reliable pharmacy is an essential part of daily life, whether you are a resident managing a long-term health condition or a traveler who has just arrived and realized you forgot your medication. In a bustling capital city like Arrecife, the administrative heart of Lanzarote, access to healthcare services is generally excellent, but knowing exactly where to go when you are in a hurry can save you precious time.

Unlike many other retail sectors, pharmacies in Spain operate under strict regulations that ensure a high standard of care. You can easily identify them by the prominent green cross sign, often illuminated, hanging outside the storefront. The pharmacists are highly trained medical professionals who can offer advice on minor ailments, explain potential side effects of medication, and direct you to a doctor if your symptoms require more serious attention.

For tourists visiting the Canary Islands, navigating a foreign healthcare system can sometimes feel daunting. However, Spanish pharmacies are incredibly accessible and often serve as the first point of contact for non-emergency medical issues. If you are suffering from sunburn, an upset stomach, or a minor infection, the pharmacist can usually provide an over-the-counter solution without the need for a lengthy visit to a medical center.

Arrecife is a compact city, particularly around the center and the waterfront, which means you are rarely more than a short walk or drive from a pharmacy. However, opening hours can vary significantly. While most central locations follow standard retail hours, often closing for a siesta in the afternoon, the city relies on a rotation system for late-night and holiday coverage to ensure someone is always available.

Understanding the concept of the "Farmacia de Guardia" (on-duty pharmacy) is crucial for anyone staying in or visiting Arrecife. These are designated pharmacies that remain open when others are closed, typically overnight, on Sundays, and during public holidays. The schedule for these duty shifts is usually posted on the door of every pharmacy in the city and is often published in local newspapers or online.

Whether you need a specific prescription filled, a refill for a chronic condition, or simply a tube of high-quality sunscreen, the pharmacies in Arrecife offer a professional and welcoming environment. Many staff members speak English, particularly in areas frequented by international visitors, making communication easier if your Spanish is limited.

To help you locate the care you need quickly, we have compiled a list of the primary pharmacies available in the city center and surrounding neighborhoods.

A UK prescription drug ran out, quickly got a Spanish prescription from Doctorsa. Saturday afternoon was not ideal timing, most pharmacies were closed until Monday morning, but Pharmacy Los Robles were open until 9PM, thank you! Great service, reasonable prices.

Very nice staff and the medicine recommendation were very efficient.
Stephen Smyth★★★★★
As a non-Spanish speaker (my fault not theirs) the staff took extra time to work out what they could do for me (in the end a trip to the hospital) but I would have been lost without their advice 🙏🏻
Serge★★★★★

I went in for an acne problem and I'm leaving absolutely delighted. Laura was very patient and kind, explaining everything I needed to know. I wish there were more people like her because you leave feeling so happy. A true pleasure. For as long as I'm here, this will be my go-to pharmacy. Thank you!
Begoña Quintero Perez★★★★★
I had a facial analysis done, and they explained to me very professionally and in great detail the reasons why the products I'm using are suitable and why they aren't. Mercedes is a very trustworthy person, and her approach is very friendly. I recommend her 100%.
Ricardo md★★★★★
The most beautiful pharmacy I've ever seen. It's a pleasure to shop there; the architectural style is wonderful. The service is quick and friendly. I'd already seen it from the outside last week when I was here for work, and today, on another business trip, I was able to see the inside. I went to buy something, not just to look at it.
Nieves García Mira★★★★★
I went for a facial analysis and loved the experience. I was treated very professionally, with everything explained clearly and tailored to my skin. I especially appreciated that she not only recommended pharmacy products but also considered the products I was already using and how to complement them with others. Mercedes was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back. 100% recommended.

Super friendly service so helpful
Rocío GH★★★★★
I just picked up a bottle of Almirón Profutura DuoBiotik baby formula for 34 euros. Not just a high price, but an exorbitant one. I imagine that, being a product sold on the open market, they're taking advantage of the situation with their profit margin. A competitive price is around 20 euros... this seems crazy to me. I'm not questioning the professionalism of the staff, but this shows a lack of respect for the public. After my review, they contacted me and resolved the issue efficiently and fairly. They acknowledged that the price was outrageous and that there had been some kind of incident. They refunded me the difference. I hope all businesses follow the example of these professionals when mistakes happen. I'm very grateful.
Alfredo Paris★★★★★
Excellent service, friendly and professional staff. Plus, its location makes it easily accessible and there's plenty of parking. From now on, it's my go-to pharmacy.
Lucía Correa★★★★★
They're incredibly friendly. Plus, they always go the extra mile for customers, giving you little gifts that really make a difference. Definitely a great pharmacy to shop at.
Raquel Rojas Rodriguez★★★★★
Empathy, kindness, helpfulness, always a smile, they give advice, well-stocked with everything—for me, one of the best pharmacies on the island. Congratulations to all the employees.

NADIA Barone★☆☆☆☆
After surgery, I went to buy some bandages to dress my wound. I showed them the bandages they'd given me in the hospital and asked for the same one. The clerk, after checking the size, gave me a smaller one, which I noticed at home when I was changing the dressing, because I trusted the clerk's professionalism. I went back to buy another pack, explaining that the one they gave me was the wrong one and that I wanted a larger one. In this case, the clerk who served me looked at me like I was an alien and didn't understand the mistake. In the end, they gave me a box of bandages the size I needed, but they weren't the right ones since they weren't breathable, and I ended up in emergency with an infection. They told me the bandages were the cause. About €11 wasted. Thank you for your professionalism.
Rosa Cael★★★★★
I always go to this pharmacy even though others are closer. You can always find what you need, and I really appreciate the service and discretion, unlike some other pharmacies where everyone knows what you buy. Leticia, the sales assistant, is a delight; I don't know her at all, but she's so kind.
Isa padron★☆☆☆☆
I went to buy the antihistamine I always take for my allergies, bilastine 20mg. I wasn't sure if it was still available on my prescription, and the saleswoman (a blonde Colombian woman) told me they didn't sell it without one. I told her yes, they've always sold it to me without a prescription at every pharmacy; it's an antihistamine, not an antibiotic. Luckily, it was still available, and I was able to take it! I'd like to remind you of the laws in this country regarding medications: Classification of Medicines by the AEMPS (Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products) Law 29/2006, of July 26, on guarantees and rational use of medicines and health products, especially the articles that regulate the dispensing of medicines (Art. 85 et seq.). Royal Decree 1718/2010, which establishes the classification of prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter) medicines. In the latter, the AEMPS classifies bilastine as an "over-the-counter" (self-care or OTC) medicine for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

I must highlight the staff's kindness. They order your medication if they don't have it in stock and deliver it the next day. They always answer the phone. They have thoughtful touches like a calendar or a bottle of shampoo for Christmas. They offer advice if they see you have any questions. Simply saying... THANK YOU
Anibal Gonzalez★★★★★
Very friendly and dedicated staff. Thank you

I like the service and the atmosphere is very friendly. They always give great advice. Thank you very much.

So I ended up there looking for a medication that was supposedly out of stock... And it was true... But they treated me wonderfully, with a smile and great courtesy... So I left without "my drug" but happy... 🙂

I would have given 5 stars if a female employee did not charge me 2 euro more for a pack of paracetamol. I got another pack a month later and saw the right price. Apart from that, they are very helpful and fast in there. My Spanish speaking is not good but, they were patient with me whilst i told them wha I needed. Very clean in there and recommend.

Today, August 25, 2026, I know it's a holiday, but even though it says OPEN, I came with my child, who was tired in the heat, and when we arrived, it was CLOSED!! It's not the first time this has happened to me; sometimes it says it's on duty, but it's not. It's not the pharmacy's fault, but they should pay attention to Google!
La Rosalia 1★★★★★
I give it 10 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for the excellent service I received from employee Cristina Nieves Vallo. She helped me by providing information about the medications I bought for my mother, and her sales and promotion of the medicines they offer were very effective. She is a very professional employee with a charisma that leaves you feeling very satisfied. I am impressed by her kindness. I recommend this place 100% 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤗
Jorge Pérez★★★☆☆
I've been to buy Espidifen several times. This last time, I bought it for €2.40, but they tried to sell me the same product but a different brand that cost almost €6. After insisting several times, they finally sold me the Espidifen. I'm posting this here because the last time I went, I had a very bad reaction to another medication, and it was the same story: they sold me a different brand, but the more expensive one. I don't know if it was just a coincidence or if it's a practice they use to make more profit. I'm posting this so that the pharmacy managers and the general public take note, because everyone's wallets are feeling the pinch.
Abenchara Viera Santana★☆☆☆☆
Terrible service! I bought a gel and went to return it, but they refused to give me a refund! They said nothing could be returned, even though the receipt only stated that medications couldn't be returned, not over-the-counter products like mine. If they don't want to give refunds, they need to specify that on the receipt!

Absolutely the best. When asking about my condition, rather than sell me something, Engkish speaking Marianna advised me to see a doctor and have me directions to the public emergency room. When I returned with a prescription, staff were very helpful, both in Spanish and limited English. See Marianna again a few days later and she asked how I was doing. Best advice and customer service!
Mark Pearce★★★★★
Very good lady I spoke to here. She spoke reasonable English which helped as my Spanish wasn't really up to the job. She sorted me out with some medication after I managed to slip down some stairs. Much better than a previous experience I had in Arrecife at another pharmacy.

Excellent .The staff are always helpful and very pleasant
J. MARÍA ROBAYNA★☆☆☆☆
I would like to warn you so that what happened to me doesn't happen to you, that they don't accept returns even if only five minutes have passed since the purchase and it wasn't any medicine.
Silvia Molli De León★★★★★
Excellent service; they're always willing to help and recommend what best suits your needs. It's a pleasure to work with such professionals.

Tips for Using Pharmacies in Arrecife

Navigating the pharmacy system in Spain is straightforward, but a little local knowledge can make your experience much smoother. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a new resident, understanding the nuances of how these establishments operate ensures you get what you need without unnecessary stress or delay.

Bring Your EHIC or Insurance Details: If you are a European traveler, always carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the newer GHIC if you are from the UK. While you will still likely need to pay for medication upfront, having this card allows the pharmacist to process the prescription correctly and ensures you are charged the subsidized rate rather than the full retail price.

Know the Generic Names: Brand names for medication vary significantly between countries. A drug you know by a specific brand name in the UK, Germany, or the US might be sold under a completely different name in Spain. Write down the generic or active ingredient name of your medication so the pharmacist can match it to the correct Spanish equivalent.

Look for the Green Cross: If you are searching for a pharmacy that is open late at night or on a Sunday, look for the illuminated green cross. If the cross is lit, the pharmacy is currently on duty. If you find a closed pharmacy, check the sign on the door, which will always list the address of the nearest "Farmacia de Guardia" that is currently open.

Ask About "Medicamentos Publicitarios": In Spain, you cannot buy common painkillers like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol in supermarkets; you must go to a pharmacy. These are called "Medicamentos Publicitarios" (advertised medicines) and are kept behind the counter. You must ask the pharmacist directly for them, even if they are non-prescription.

Utilize the Pharmacist’s Expertise: Don’t hesitate to describe your symptoms to the pharmacist. They are trained to triage minor conditions and can often save you a trip to the doctor. If they believe your condition is serious, they will refuse to sell you medication that might mask symptoms and will instead direct you to the nearest Urgencias (emergency room) or Centro de Salud (health center).

Whether you are picking up a prescription or seeking advice for a minor ailment, the pharmacies in Arrecife provide a vital service with a high standard of professionalism. By knowing where to go and how the system works, you can ensure that your health needs are met promptly, leaving you free to enjoy the beautiful weather and vibrant culture of Lanzarote.
