We visited Almudena Cathedral just after 7 pm after walking through Plaza de Oriente, and the timing couldn't have been better. The sunlight coming through the stained-glass windows cast rainbows across the floors, which felt almost unreal.
A quick navigation note: there's a plaza between the cathedral and the Royal Palace with the museum to the back, so keep walking left along Calle de Bailén and turn right to find the main entrance. You'll know you're there when you reach Luis Antonio Sanguino's bronze doors, which are stunning before you've even stepped inside.
After passing through security, the Neo-Gothic interior stops you in your tracks. The altar dedicated to Jesus and the Virgin is the kind of thing that makes you want to sit down and look up. The sheer height and scale of the golden altar are breathtaking, and the Cinderella-style staircase laid out in front of it makes the whole scene feel almost theatrical.
Look up, look down, look everywhere. The colors painted across the ceiling mirror the rainbow light spilling from the stained glass below. Bright and otherworldly is the only way to describe it.
Free to enter and absolutely worth it.

A truly beautiful cathedral, which you must see if you visit Madrid. The cathedral is free to enter and you get to see an elegant architecture, different to other Catholic churches. The ceilings are beautiful.
I paid extra to visit the dome, which you enter via a separate entrance, opposite the royal palace. The price is worth it to get a view of the ceiling of the dome and also to walk the balcony for 360 degree views of the city. The climb was bit too arduous, but there was a lift. You also get to visit the cathedral museum, but to be honest the star of the show was the dome

⛪✨ A cathedral that took 100+ years to make… and honestly, it shows! 👑🇪🇸
Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena is a stunning gem right beside the Royal Palace of Madrid. The architecture is impressive, the details are beautiful, and every corner feels like a piece of history waiting to be discovered. 🏰📸
Loved the unique mix of styles—it’s not just a place of worship, it’s a true work of art. The grand interior, peaceful atmosphere, and beautiful views make it worth adding to your Madrid itinerary.
✨ Tips:
• Combine your visit with the Royal Palace since they’re right next to each other 👑
• Go earlier in the day for fewer crowds and better photos 📸
• Check opening times as access may change during services or events ⏰
• Don’t forget to look up—the ceiling details are amazing! 😍
A must-see Madrid landmark. No crown required… but you’ll definitely feel a little royal walking in! 👑✨

The Cathedral was honestly amazing, loved it. The inside is so beautiful, with colorful details, high ceilings, and a really calm, peaceful vibe. It feels grand but still very welcoming.
I went on a weekday in April, free to enter, which made it even better. It’s such a nice spot to slow down, look around, and just enjoy the atmosphere for a bit. Definitely one of my favorite places in Madrid!

Visited Catedral de la Almudena and had a truly impressive and memorable experience. The cathedral is magnificent both inside and outside, combining grand architecture, historical significance, and a peaceful spiritual atmosphere in the heart of Madrid.
One of the highlights is the striking architectural style of the cathedral. The exterior is elegant and monumental, while the interior feels bright, spacious, and beautifully designed. Unlike many darker traditional cathedrals, the colorful details and modern touches inside create a unique and welcoming atmosphere.
I especially appreciated the stunning ceilings, stained glass windows, and artistic details throughout the cathedral. The craftsmanship is remarkable, and every section of the building reflects care, history, and cultural importance. The peaceful ambience inside also makes it a wonderful place for quiet reflection and appreciation of the architecture.
The location next to Royal Palace of Madrid adds even more significance and beauty to the visit, creating one of the most iconic areas in the city. The surrounding plaza and viewpoints also provide excellent opportunities for photography.
The cathedral is clean, well maintained, and easy to explore, with a calm environment despite being a popular attraction.
Overall, a breathtaking and highly worthwhile visit. Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena is one of Madrid’s most beautiful landmarks and highly recommended for anyone interested in history, architecture, art, or spirituality.

We bought tickets on the official website a week before the trip, entered regularly and enjoyed seeing the palace. A magnificent indescribable building. We took self-guided tickets and went around in 1.5-2 hours! We would definitely come again as we didn't have much time to visit the garden we saw and walk around!

Wonderful experience. Recommend the guided tour to get the history, can order tours direct through the website in Spanish and English. Recommend booking in advance. Not a lot of shade during the summer outside in front of the palace, bathrooms inside available at the gift shop. Cute selection of unique memorabilia at the gift shop. Thank you for the hospitality and immersive experience into the Spanish monarchy!

An excellent visit. We went during the two-hour free entry period they offer at the end of the day. The wait wasn't very long. If you don't qualify for free entry, it's definitely worth buying tickets. The castle is impressive and one of the city's landmarks. Highly recommended!

A must see sight for such an ancient empire. The tour takes you through the opulent royal rooms. The palace is not lived in by the royal family so you get to see how they used to live. Bear in mind this building was rebuilt about 250 years ago, after a fire
You probably need the audio tour, but to be honest it was a bit disappointing. We paid for the version where you use your mobile phone. This works ok but you really need to download it to your phone before the visit. We were not able to get mobile reception so had to use the online only method. This worked, but the app would reset every time we switched to take a photo. After a while this was tiresome, having to scroll back to where we were before. I'd suggest paying extra for the device they supply.
The descriptions were useful, if a bit bland. It would have been better to use some historical stories to bring the rooms to life. I learned more about the Spanish monarchy by visiting the art museums.

Cool experience to see some history. Took me a little to understand the self guided audio from my phone but once I understood, it was easy. The airport was pretty cool. Spend about 1.5-2 hours walking around. So much to see and some great photos.
Plaza Mayor

mahmoudi ahmed★★★★★
Plaza Mayor is one of the most iconic and beautiful places in Madrid. The architecture is stunning, the atmosphere is vibrant, and every corner reflects the city’s rich history and culture. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning, it’s a place that deserves to be on everyone’s itinerary. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants around the square, making it a perfect spot to relax, enjoy the surroundings, and experience the heart of Madrid.
That said, there are a few aspects that could be improved. The square can become extremely crowded, especially during peak hours, which takes away from the peaceful experience. Prices at some cafés and restaurants are noticeably higher simply because of the location, and there are quite a few street vendors approaching tourists. More seating areas, better crowd management, and stricter control of unauthorized vendors would make the experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, despite these minor drawbacks, Plaza Mayor remains a magnificent landmark that perfectly captures the spirit of Madrid. Its history, elegance, and lively atmosphere make it an unforgettable place to visit. I highly recommend taking the time to explore it, especially in the early morning or at sunset when its beauty is at its peak.

Plaza Mayor is a beautiful and impressive historic square in the heart of Madrid. The architecture is stunning, and the atmosphere is lively and welcoming. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Definitely a must-visit when exploring Madrid!
Rahmah Ramli★★★★☆
Plaza Mayor is the old historic centre of Madrid and unlike the modern centre Puerta del Sol, it still retains its charm and appeal. The Plaza Mayor was originally designed in 1617 during the Hapsburg era and the square has played a central role in many both joyful and traumatic events that have shaped Spain. Unlike many other capital cities the central square of the Plaza Mayor is surrounded by private residence and not government offices or state rooms. Today the three levels of apartments are still in the possession of private residence, who possibly own the most exclusive address in Madrid. These private residences used to earn the owners of the rooms a hefty wage as the balconies which over look the square used to be rented out to the aristocrats during major public events.
Tyler Dylan★★★★☆
Busy touristy square with lots of ops for people watching and beautiful architecture. The square serves as a gathering place for music concerts and celebrations. There are a lot of restaurants and shops nearby and inside the square itself. We saw part of the celebration that centers around Madrid's patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, and is the city's grandest traditional celebration in mid-May. The square was full of people all and into the early am. Free entry.

Visiting Plaza Mayor was an unforgettable experience and one of the most iconic places in Madrid.
The square is absolutely magnificent, surrounded by elegant red facades, beautiful arcades, and centuries of history. Walking into Plaza Mayor feels like stepping back in time while still enjoying the vibrant energy of modern Madrid.
The atmosphere is lively and full of character, with street performers, cafés, and people from all over the world enjoying this historic setting.
What impressed me most was the architectural harmony and the sense of grandeur that makes the square so visually striking.
Overall, a must visit landmark in Madrid historic, vibrant, and truly spectacular. ¡Madre mía, qué plaza tan impresionante!

Visiting Templo de Debod on our first night in Madrid was one of the best decisions of the entire trip, and it was a surprise I had planned for the person traveling with me. After spending the afternoon exploring the cathedral and the Royal Palace, we walked through the Sabatini Gardens on the way up to the hillside, which we both really appreciated as a peaceful and beautiful lead-up to what was waiting at the top. I had seen on social media that, similar to what they do in parts of Italy, there are live street performers who gather here before sunset, and I knew that was exactly how I wanted us to start our time in Spain.
We arrived at roughly 8 pm, and what greeted us was absolutely stunning. From the trail, it opens up to the Egyptian temple. It is possible to purchase tickets and enter; however, the last entry time had passed by the time we walked over. Behind the temple, there are multiple areas to stop and take photos of the city skyline. The viewpoint gives you this incredible elevated, panoramic perspective of Madrid, with the Palace and Cathedral to the left. As the sun went down, the light hit the temple in a way that made the whole scene feel almost surreal.
The street performers were truly the heart of the evening, playing a mix of Spanish and English music while a crowd of locals and visitors gathered around them. The warmth there was not just from the sun. It was in the people, the music, and the feeling that everyone knew they were somewhere really special. We would absolutely go back.
Amrit Das★★★★★
Visited Templo de Debod and had an unforgettable experience. The temple is one of the most unique and fascinating landmarks in Madrid, combining ancient history, architecture, and beautiful scenery in a truly remarkable setting.
One of the highlights is the extraordinary atmosphere surrounding the monument. The fact that an authentic ancient Egyptian temple stands in the middle of Madrid makes the experience feel both surprising and special. The structure is beautifully preserved and offers a strong sense of history and cultural significance.
I especially appreciated the location and panoramic views around the temple. The open surroundings and reflecting pools create a calm and scenic environment, particularly during sunset when the lighting becomes especially beautiful. The area is ideal for photography, relaxation, and simply enjoying the peaceful ambience.
The site is clean, accessible, and well maintained, with enough open space to walk around comfortably and admire the temple from different angles. The contrast between the ancient architecture and the modern city skyline adds even more charm to the experience.
Another positive aspect is the cultural importance of the temple as a gift from Egypt to Spain, which gives the site additional historical meaning and uniqueness.
Overall, a memorable and highly worthwhile visit. Templo de Debod is one of Madrid’s most distinctive attractions and highly recommended for anyone interested in history, architecture, photography, or scenic viewpoints.

Unreal Experience - Solar Eclipse & Stargasing at Templo de Debod!
If you think Templo de Debod is just an ancient Egyptian temple in the middle of Madrid, think again—it is easily the best viewpoint in town for a celestial event.
Catching the solar eclipse on the evening of August 12th from this exact spot was pure magic. Watching the sun dip low over the valley during the eclipse turned the sky unbelievable shades of deep orange, red, and dusky purple.
After the sun set, the park transformed. Laying on the green lawns of Parque del Oeste to watch the Perseids shoot across the sky through the night and into the early morning was a core memory.
The glowing, lit-up stone gateways provided the ultimate backdrop for stargazing until dawn.
Before settling in for the cosmic show, taking a short, easy walk over to La Rosaleda rose garden made for a relaxing start to the evening.
Even in the early hours of the morning, the area felt completely safe. Catching the night bus back to my accommodation was super easy, reliable, and smooth.
Grab some snacks, pack a blanket, check the night bus routes, and get yourself here for golden hour—you won't regret it!
Between City★★★★★
This is one of my favourite spots in Madrid. Not only is the Temple of Debod an interesting piece of history, it is also one of the best places in the city to watch the sunset with the combination of open sky, city views and relaxed atmosphere. Whether you’re taking photos, going for a walk or simply sitting and watching the light change over Madrid, it’s a lovely place to spend an evening. It's definitely worth a visit, especially at sunset.
Juan Gonzalez★★★★★
A great little temple site for a short visit. The tickets get you inside the temple building, which is quite small. The upstairs was closed during our visit making this an even shorter visit.
Be sure to walk through the whole site, as there are ancient carvings and even some modern graffiti around all the place. (I'm looking at you Laura and Karol. Whoever you are)
Bottom line, it's worth the visit.

Although this his a relatively modern church and crypt, it is very beautiful and traditionally adorned with over 400 columns. The tombs are beautifully presented, and clearly well maintained by loved ones, as many still have fresh flowers donated by visitors.
The alcove is ornately painted and decorated with some stained glass windows. There is a disability access ramp, and the whole crypt is on one floor, so is recommended for people in wheelchairs and children in pushchairs. A voluntary donation is requested on entrance, of only €1, which is more than reasonable.
There is also considerable amount of seating, which is very welcome when passing time in quiet reflection.

Very cool church with a great view!
St. Mary Royal of the Almudena is beautiful inside, and what makes it even better is that you can go up to the balcony. From there, you get an amazing view of the Royal Palace right across from it. Totally worth a visit if you’re in Madrid!

Beautiful cathedral inside and out. A €1 entry donation to get in and the seem to allow photos. Being careful not to impose on the religious rights of the worshippers of course.

Families have their personal space in the Cathedral.
Strange that people can just step on the tombstones although some family members have wisely placed flower wreaths to remind everyone.
There is a coin memento you can buy at the end of the visit.
All the public spaces seem to have siesta breaks, so factor that in when planning your visit.

I stumbled upon these gardens purely by chance while exploring the area next to the magnificent Royal Palace of Madrid. The entrance is completely free, which was a pleasant surprise. The whole space is extremely well maintained with beautiful statues, hedge mazes, and peaceful fountains. Even on sunny and hot days, the environment inside feels pleasant, refreshing, and full of cool shaded spots to sit and unwind.
Historically, this space used to house the royal stables before it was transformed into elegant neoclassical gardens named after the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini. The only slight downside is that you have to walk down a set of stairs to get inside, but it is totally worth it for the views and the tranquil vibe right in the middle of the city.

Well looked after with fountains green and places to sit and relax. It combines well as a visit with Campo Del Moro next to it.

Sabatini Gardens are a beautiful pause in the middle of Madrid. From here you get stunning views of the Royal Palace and the nearby Senate building, all framed by perfectly manicured gardens and fountains. What made it extra special was the energy around the plaza, locals casually free-dancing, people relaxing, and that unmistakable Madrid vibe where history and everyday life blend effortlessly. Peaceful, lively, and photogenic all at once. A must-stop whether you’re sightseeing or just soaking it all in.
Alghazali Taha★★★★★
Sabatini Gardens is such a peaceful and beautiful spot in the heart of Madrid. The symmetrical hedges, fountains, and flowers make it perfect for a relaxing stroll or just sitting and enjoying the view.
It’s right next to the Royal Palace, so you get an amazing backdrop while wandering the gardens. The atmosphere is calm and serene, a nice break from the busy city streets nearby.
Whether you want to take photos, relax, or enjoy a quiet moment, the Sabatini Gardens are definitely worth a visit.
Tân Trần Văn★★★★★
Just behind the Royal Palace, the Sabatini Gardens offer a more structured and elegant green space in the heart of Madrid. Visiting in winter at the beginning of the year, the gardens were moderately crowded, with tourists strolling along the symmetrical paths and stopping to admire the palace views. The bare trees and trimmed hedges gave the gardens a clean, almost minimalist appearance.
The calm design of the gardens contrasts nicely with the busy areas around the palace. Fountains, statues, and carefully arranged greenery create a sense of order and balance, even in winter. Although the cold weather limits how long visitors stay, the atmosphere remains pleasant and relaxed.
Overall, the Sabatini Gardens are a beautiful place for a short walk or a quiet pause. Despite some New Year crowds, the gardens still provide a refined and peaceful experience close to one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks.

What a stunning park! Once part of the royal grounds, this park is now open to the public and there's a lot to explore! There are museums, gardens, trails, and more inside. Many go to the water and rent paddleboats, but I enjoyed exploring the rose garden and the remains of Europe's second-oldest zoo. Spend several hours wandering this grand park, just be mindful of shade and water areas.
Phong Nguyen Thanh★★★★★
Retiro Park is honestly one of the loveliest spots in Madrid! I went early in the morning, and the air was cool and pleasant, with soft sunlight filtering through the trees.
What I loved most was the positive energy here — so many locals out exercising: joggers, people doing yoga on the grass, even aerobics groups and cyclists along the paths. It felt like the whole city was starting the day together, full of energy and life.
The park is huge and green, with a large lake for boat rides and plenty of quiet corners to sit and relax or read a book. There's even a free museum inside the park (Palacio de Velázquez), which is a nice bonus if you want a bit of art and shade after your walk. The paths are well maintained, with lots of benches and shade.
If you ever visit Madrid, I'd recommend waking up a little early to experience Retiro Park in the morning — you'll avoid the midday heat and get to soak in the lively rhythm of the locals.

Visited Puerta del Príncipe and had a very interesting and enjoyable experience. The gate is elegant and historically significant, adding to the grandeur and ceremonial atmosphere of the surrounding royal area in Madrid.
One of the highlights is the architectural beauty of the structure. The detailed ironwork, classic design, and impressive proportions give the entrance a refined and distinguished appearance. It reflects the royal and historical character associated with nearby landmarks such as Royal Palace of Madrid.
I especially appreciated the atmosphere around the gate. The area feels spacious, well maintained, and visually impressive, making it pleasant for walking, sightseeing, and photography. The combination of open plazas, historical architecture, and scenic viewpoints creates a memorable setting.
The location is also excellent for exploring nearby attractions, and the gate serves as a beautiful transition point between different historical sections of the city. It is especially attractive during the evening, when the surrounding architecture is illuminated.
Another positive aspect is how the gate contributes to the ceremonial elegance and historical identity of Madrid without feeling overcrowded or commercialized.

This was a good way to see most things in Madrid. Now I know those places where I’d like to explore more in depth. Our guide (Dominique, I think) seemed to be pretty new and had issues with the vehicle. She was super sweet though, and we had some great conversations. But sometimes it was hard to hear her with all of the traffic noise around us! And it was difficult to get pictures when we are just doing a quick drive by. It was a cooler day and there were no blankets on our vehicle as advertised.

It's great for a walk but be warned that it is big and not all exits are functional all of the time. We spent quite some time in it and kids loved the experience of not having to follow a specific route.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Hidden Royal Retreat!
If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Madrid’s city life, Campo del Moro is the perfect spot. These gardens are a great respite—very quiet, tranquil, and surprisingly overlooked by many tourists.
Why It’s Special
The park is massive and beautifully maintained, featuring a variety of different paths that lead to secret gardens and small frog ponds. It’s a place where you can truly immerse yourself in nature:
Wildlife: There is an abundance of wildlife including birds, butterflies, and the famous peacocks with their huge, colorful plumes roaming freely.
Atmosphere: It is so peaceful inside that all you can hear is the humming of bees and the singing of birds. Walking these paths, you really feel the history of the kings and queens of Spain who once strolled here.
Photographer's Dream
The views are spectacular. From the main entrance, you get an amazing perspective of the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral. Because of the elevation and the lush "green carpet" of the lawn, the palace looks like it is floating in the background. It is easily one of the best spots in Madrid for photography.
Go Unhurried: Give yourself time to wander. It’s a large space (over 20 hectares), and the best parts are found by taking the winding side paths away from the main avenues.
Whether you want to see the "royal turkeys" (peacocks) up close or just need a quiet moment surrounded by nature, this is a must-visit gem in the heart of Madrid.

It's nice to walk through the park next to the palace after visiting it. There's a lot of greenery, and you can also find a terrace where you can sit and have a coffee.

Essential Tips for Visiting the Area
To make the most of your visit to the Almudena district, a little local insight goes a long way. The flow of the city, the timing of the crowds, and the local customs can significantly impact your experience. Below are practical strategies to help you navigate the area like a seasoned traveler rather than a tourist.
- Time Your Visit Strategically: The Royal Palace and the Cathedral often close for official state ceremonies. Always check the official schedules on the morning of your visit to avoid disappointment, and arrive early (before 10:00 AM) to beat the tour bus crowds.
- Embrace the Siesta Rhythm: Many small shops and traditional restaurants in the side streets close between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Plan your major sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon, and use the early afternoon for a long lunch or rest.
- Dine on Menú del Día: If you are looking for an authentic and affordable lunch, skip the tourist traps on the main plazas. Look for signs advertising the "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day) on smaller side streets, where you can enjoy a three-course meal with a drink for a fixed, reasonable price.
- Wear Comfortable, Sturdy Shoes: The historic center is paved with cobblestones and polished stone, which can be slippery when wet and tiring after hours of walking. Supportive footwear is non-negotiable for enjoying this district comfortably.
- Validate Your Transport Tickets: If you use the Metro to arrive at Ópera or La Latina, remember that the distance from the station to the attractions is short but uphill. Ensure you keep your transport card handy, but know that once you are in the Almudena zone, walking is the only practical way to see the sights.
As you wander through the plazas and palace gates, you will quickly realize that this neighborhood is more than a collection of tourist stops; it is the living room of Madrid. The sound of church bells often mixes with the strumming of street guitars, creating a soundtrack that is distinctly Spanish. Take the time to sit on a bench in the Plaza de Oriente or grab a coffee at a terrace, simply to people-watch and absorb the atmosphere.
Leaving the Almudena area, you carry with you the essence of Madrid’s history—from the crown jewels to the humble tapas bars. This corner of the city encapsulates the grandeur and warmth that define Spain, ensuring that your visit remains a vivid memory long after you have returned home.
