The scent of warm butter, toasted flour, and slow-baked fruit is one of the first sensory experiences that greets visitors wandering through the cobbled streets of Bordeaux. While the city is globally celebrated for its grand châteaux and robust red wines, its artisanal baking scene is equally deserving of a dedicated itinerary. From traditional wood-fired ovens to modern pastry laboratories, Bordeaux offers a deep dive into the soul of French gastronomy through its breads and sweets.
Finding the perfect baguette or the most delicate canelé is not merely a quick snack stop; it is a cultural ritual. The Bordelais take their baking seriously, often queuing out the door on weekend mornings for a specific sourdough loaf or a perfectly laminated croissant. This guide cuts through the overwhelming number of storefronts to highlight the establishments that define excellence in the city’s baking landscape.
Whether you are hunting for a crusty "tradition" to pair with local cheese, a flaky pain au chocolat to enjoy with a café crème, or the city’s signature caramelized pastry, Bordeaux has a baker for every craving. The diversity ranges from historic institutions that have kneaded dough for over a century to innovative young bakers experimenting with ancient grains and long fermentation.
Understanding the difference between a standard boulangerie and a true artisanal bakery is key to navigating the city. The best spots often mill their own flour, use natural levain, and source butter from specific regions like Charentes-Poitou. These details elevate a simple loaf of bread into a complex, nutritious, and deeply flavorful experience.
In this guide, we explore the addresses that locals guard jealously and visitors rave about long after returning home. We have evaluated them based on the quality of their crusts, the integrity of their ingredients, the mastery of viennoiserie, and their contribution to the neighborhood fabric. It is time to explore the crème de la crème of Bordeaux’s bakery scene.
Below is a curated selection of the must-visit bakeries that define the city’s reputation for exceptional baked goods.

This boulangerie is located quite close to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew (around a 2-3 minute walk). The area is quiet. The staff members are lovely, they do speak English.
We visited twice. The first time, we got some coffee with a strawberry tart and apricot pastry. Both were wonderfully fresh, tasty and not too sweet. My favorite was the strawberry tart because of its base. Flavourful and snappy. The second time we came, we got the strawberry tart, pain aux raisins and a fruit tart. The tarts were amazing, not too sweet, and the pain aux raisins was so delightfully fresh and buttery. I also brought a chicken sandwich for lunch. It was simple and filling.
Additionally, the shop is very nice to sit in. It's very pretty. Would definitely visit again in the future.

Magnificent bakery in every sense. We found ourselves coming here almost every morning. It is a small, cosy, and very charming place, but what truly makes it special is the staff. They are genuinely friendly, kind, and welcoming, and their warmth elevates the entire experience. Everything is freshly baked and delicious, and the coffee is excellent. We tried the classic croissant, canelé, cheese quiche, and Christmas cookies with marmalade, all of them were wonderful. My absolute favorite is the blueberry tart. Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, with fresh fruit flavors that really stand out. Simply delicious 😇

Recommended by the hotel concierge so we came here to try. Very cute boulangerie with lots of options. Though the croissant and brioche is average quality, we still love here. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Vibe is cozy.
Jana Kreilein★★★★★
Fabuloussss!!!! The quiche, blueberry tart and eclairs were all 10/10. Gorgeous atmosphere, in and outdoor tables and very attentive, kind staff.

Sensational bakery. Pastries stuffed with pralines seem to be their thing so we tried the praline brioche and the praline flan. Both were fantastic. They also serve coffee and there are a few small tables with stools to have a seat, space permitting. Service was very friendly and so patient with our English french. The way they set out our two items for dining in was done with such care. Thanks, team!
Update: returned for more and the praline Choco croissant is must try too! Almond croissant is also fabulous.

A Fantastic Boulangerie in Bordeaux!
Thanks to the Bordeaux Old Town Food and Wine Tour, we were introduced to Boulangerie Louis Lamour — and what a great discovery it was. The mouthwatering smell of freshly baked croissants, baguettes, and loaves of breads filled the air and enticed us to enjoy a culinary delight. As amateur bread bakers, we were in absolute heaven.
Our guide Alex shared the history of French bread baking as well as the unique offerings that make Boulangerie Louis Lamour a top boulangèrie in Bordeaux and across France.
We savored the delicious Beyrouthin croissant in the store, and the traditional baguette later that afternoon along with charcuterie and wine — a perfect Bordeaux moment. We loved the croissants and baguettes so much that we returned the next day for more!
If you find yourself in Bordeaux, definitely visit Louis Lamour Boulangerie. It’s a must stop for anyone who loves fresh bread.

Lovely boulangerie! They have many sweet and savoury pastries (if you only see sweet there may be more by the register). Try the croissant with goat cheese line nuts and zaatar. The also have coffee and it is excellent. Want to sit to dine? They have a small seating area.
When you visit, purchase a baguette suspend. If someone comes in who cannot pay these baguettes are prepaid for them. A great initiative for food security.

The kouign amann that changed my life. I dont understand how it can be this good and why I thought other ones were good. This one was buttery, slightly salty, sweet obviously - but the texture and flavors were just perfect! Everything else was amazing as well. We ordered croissant, croichoc and madeline with some espresso. One of my fondest food experiences here in Bordeaux!
Cherine★★★★★
I read a review here that said you shouldn’t miss their croissants, so the next morning before my trip I went to this pastry shop, I am not a breakfast person and would rarely eat croissants, so I chose the criochoc and it was definitely a nice chouce as the the croissant had a praline filling other than the chocolate, the buttery dough added to the experience. So take the advice and go try this shop.

Best boulangerie of Bordeaux. We came here to start our tour throw Bordeaux. We decide that the best way to start the day in the city was with a breakfast. We found this place and was the best thing we did. We came before 10.00 and they were full of delicious pastries.
The chocolate croissant and the classic croissant are the best ones that I ever taste. Now I’m wondering if I ever taste a real croissant until today.
The coffe was really nice too.
The service very good. Very nice people, and they speak English and Spanish. So was very easy for us to communicate.
We came back at lunch time, and they were almost sold out. Only left the olives focaccia, was delicious, and made the perfect lunch snack for us. And the raisins roll pastry, was really good. I’m so happy was the only pastry they have left, because if they had a croissant probably I would miss to taste this delicious pastry!
It’s definitely a place to stop on your visit to Bordeaux, and I highly recommend to be there early in the morning to be able to choose from all the amazing things they have.

A K★★☆☆☆
I am not sure if we went on an off day but the pastries were dry and old. I’m pretty sure they were not from that day. We bought a selection and every single item was stale and tasteless (we bought them at 9 am). The best thing thing about the items we bought were the price. Very cheap! We did however go to Ceres and they were just fanatic. Moist, yet flaky and full of flavour.
Francesca★★★★★
an amazing boulangerie with the most selection i’ve ever seen. everything i’ve tried was amazing including the chausson aux poires and the rouié. both delicious and can’t wait to come back and try more!
Stephanie Soong★★★★★
Some of the best, most delicious pastries I’ve had in France! The almond croissant was to die for. I love how each pastry is not too sweet. They focus more on yummy textures of the pastries. Wonderful balance of crunchy, warm, soft, and chewy. Also the portions are huge for the low price you pay! I ordered two big pastries and they were 3.5 euros total. Great deal. Exceptional quality. Absolutely delicious. Will be going back everyday for the rest of my vacation.

Really enjoyed the jésuite! The pain au chocolat was pretty good as well. They were friendly and we enjoyed watching them bake the pastries through the window.

WOW this boulangerie makes DELICIOUS pastries. probably the tastiest i’ve tried in Bordeaux and I’ve been on a mission to try them all. cannot wait to try the chocolatines and croissants. So far i’ve tried la suisse and le chausson aux pommes. AMAZING!
I can conclude the chocolatines are also AMAZING!

Loved the grain bread….open texture and all!…nice flavor and delicious crust. Thank you. Don’t like “holes”?….just cut thicker slices 😉

very nice Boulangerie, only tried the croissants, but they were tasty
Katarína Paľová★★★★☆
Really nice small bakery in Bordeaux. I have visited after seeing it in the Meilleur Boulangerie de France television series on M6. I tried their croissant as well as their cinnamon viennoiserie that looked like little pieces of croissant dough stuck together by delicious cinnamon and sugar butter mixture.
The croissant was really nice, after tasting so many croissants in France this year I can say it was amongst the better ones though not THE best one. Nevertheless it was still delicious and I don't think you would be disappointed. It's flaky and buttery and very well laminated!
The cinnamon pastry was recommended to me and it didn't disappointed though I preferred the pure croissant as this one was maybe a touch too sweet for me but that is personal taste 🙂
Would recommend!

What a great finding! We were passing by and met the cheerful owner who was so kind to walk us through the bakery and patisserie. He was so genuine and gave us free cookies to taste. We left and came back the following day to try more options and everything tasted so good!!!!! Love it! One of the best bakeries i’ve ever tasted.

We walked past this bakery store and saw all the awards and recommendation signatures out on their main entry so decided to give it a try.
Bought a ham & cheese sandwich and francaccia bread! They both were so freshly made and delicious 😋. There are various types of bakeries and pastries on offer, and they are looking so great!
Definitely worth trying this place if you are around in town.

First experience at Maison Lamour, came to pick up some of their special Flan and some sourdough.
Great shop with beautiful products on display, very attracting looking french boulangerie and pâtisserie specialities.
Great and prompt service.
The french classic flan with tonka beans was delicious!
The walnut bread and rye bread were fantastic.
I’ll be back !

Viennoiseries and cakes are great. But at lunch time, they have a good selection of sandwiches. They had only one non-meat sandwich, but it was very tasty.
Both times I went to, there was a queue of people waiting along the narrow store waiting to pay for their selections.

We stumbled upon this amazing place by accident - turns out it's the oldest bakery in Bordeaux, and specializes in Gascon baking. The oven dates back to 1765. There's a wide variety of breads (mostly) and pastries ("The oven is great for bread - not so much for pastries", to quote one of the employees - problems with precise heart control). We tried the croissant - more "substantial" than a typical French croissant - slightly more "bready", but well-baked and flavorful, and also had one of their specialties, a Basque tart, which was amazing. They were very friendly and patient with us as we gawked at everything and took pictures. Very close to the cruise port in Bordeaux.
aleron kong★★★★★
Antoine was a delight and pleasure as was the “hidden” seating behind the bar and the old soot stains of a forgotten fire
The croissant was a bit dark for me but one past those layers there was delicious butter and flakiness perhaps much like the boulangerie itself 🙂
clem★★★★☆
The croissant was very nice. I had the plain croissant and the pain au chocolat. Both on the harder rather than fluffy side but very nice. The staff was pushing me a bit to fast even tho I was the only person at the moment.

I loved this place! Highly recommended for a wonderful breakfast. We had "pane e marmellata" and we were satisfied with it. Great pain au chocolate!

Fabulous walking tour of both “hidden” and prominent Bordeaux sights, as well as making stops at the best Boulangeries in the city! Very well-versed guide…considerate of everyone in the group. Great experience.

The perfect first day tour in Bordeaux! I booked at the last minute and am so happy I did! I went solo and instantly felt comfortable in our group of 7. Nikesh is such a knowledgeable, friendly guide and the places we went were definitely not locations I would have found on my own (both touring and the boulangeries). There was so much more to this tour than just food- I learned a lot about Bordeaux and got my bearings while touring. We had so many treats I didn’t need lunch! Highly recommend!

We had an absolutely wonderful bakery tour in Bordeaux with Nikesh! He did an incredible job guiding our family of 10, including our seniors, making sure everyone felt comfortable, included, and engaged throughout the experience.
Nikesh was respectful, knowledgeable, and had a fantastic sense of humor. His fun trivia and fascinating stories about Bordeaux's rich baking traditions made each stop even more memorable. We sampled amazing pastries while learning so much about the city's history and culture.
If you're looking for a tour that's informative, well-paced, and genuinely enjoyable for all ages, we highly recommend Nikesh. Thank you for making our family's time in Bordeaux such a special and delicious experience! Thank you Sahasrabuddhe-Kode Family July 2026

Kesh made everyone feel included by switching effortlessly between English and French, ensuring that everyone could fully enjoy the stories behind each bakery and the neighborhood.
This experience is an absolute must for anyone visiting Bordeaux. I can’t recommend it enough - you’ll walk away full and happy.

I am super picky with croissants and general bakes. During my time in Bordeaux I deliberately visited a LOT of them to find one that would match my expectations. And so far I can certainly say that Ceres was the best. The croissants are perfectly light and fluffy inside while having a tiny thin layer of crust on the outside. The bread are also delicious! They have some super interesting selections (love the nut ones!). Paco was also super helpful in explaining the differences for each bread. Thank you to the team at Ceres for making the world a better place ! 🧡

The bakery itself is lovely, and they have an inside patio that is very pleasant! There's plenty of places where to seat inside too.
I arrived a bit late for lunch, so they didn't have much anymore, but I enjoyed a nice ceasar salad that had fantastic sundried tomatoes and some lovely croutons too! It wasn't too heavily seasoned and I appreciated that. I also really appreciate the fact that they offered tap water.

An amazingly varied and delicious bakery. I had a beautiful sandwich, a cinnamon roll, and an orange tart. I took home a snickers-type dessert that almost made me cry. For people with celiac disease, this place can’t be beat.
And the terrace is lovely!

Completely gluten-free boulangerie.
As a non-celiac person, I still really enjoyed each pastry.
You can tell that they’re not traditional products and there’s something slightly different about the dough, but once you realize they’re entirely gluten-free, you can truly appreciate them.
The place itself is very artistic, with beautiful photographs and even a small art gallery inside.

We’re always on the lookout for gluten free baked goods. This place definitely sits at the top of our chart! We arrived early so the store keep was able to answer all of our questions and guide us from pastry to pastry. We even picked up some savory treats for our train ride later that day. I asked for a matcha latte and it was the very best I’ve ever had outside my own home! I watched as she expertly prepared it in phases with a splash of boiling water and the matcha, then adding in heated almond milk. Normally my family doesn’t enjoy this, but I had to fight them off once they had a taste.
The gallery itself is interesting to walk around and browse. More fun is that you can actually peek into the kitchen and see the bakers hard at work. I personally love when I get to see people in action.
I can’t recommend this place enough!

A wonderful find for someone like me who follows a largely gluten-free diet! There was an extensive selection of baked goods: cakes, breads, pastries, and even savory options with delicious toppings. Everything was presented in the typically culinary and aesthetic French way. The beautiful courtyard terrace, in the classic Bordeaux style, makes it the perfect place to start my day in Bordeaux from now on. There’s also a small art exhibition to enjoy. Lovely young staff and a great atmosphere. Highly recommended!

I had the most delicious sandwich there. Ham and cheese with some espresso on the side. They have a variety of options. The food was fresh and tasted very nice. We also brought a sourdough loaf and pain aux raisins; both were delicious.

Excellent variety of pastries all executed so well.
Buttery, cream, flaky deliciousness. We ordered a couple of different kinds of pastries and loved every single one of them .
Would definitely go back as they are not a chain where I find some of the pastries stale and lacking in flavour. Not these!
Quick service and such friendly staff. Highly recommend if you are in the area. 😊😋

A very delightful boulangerie. We came here a total of three times...each were wonderful. One evening we got 2 quiches and a bruschetta! Wonderful ending to a great day in Bordeaux!!
The final time we visited before leaving Bordeaux, the pain au chocolat's were hot out of the oven and sooooo delicious! They also had excellent sandwiches!

Simply the best croissants in Bordeaux! Best pastries, sandwiches and quiche! Fantastic pain aux raisin too. Everything they serve is made in house! Super friendly staff!
Tips for Enjoying Bordeaux Bakeries
To truly appreciate the artistry of Bordeaux’s bakers, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The rhythm of the city dictates the bakery schedule, and understanding when to go, what to ask for, and how to handle your purchases will significantly enhance your experience. These practical tips will help you navigate the counters like a true Bordelais.
Timing is Everything: The best time to buy bread is not first thing in the morning, but rather mid-morning or late afternoon. While the selection of viennoiserie is best before 10:00 AM, the "boulangerie" ovens often finish the first bake of sourdough and traditional loaves around 11:00 AM. For the freshest baguette for dinner, the "second bake" usually comes out between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Ask for "Bien Cuite": If you love a deeply caramelized, darker crust, ask for a baguette "bien cuite" (well-baked). If you prefer a softer, paler crust, ask for "pas trop cuite" (not too baked). The baker will usually have a preference basket set aside for these requests, ensuring you get the exact texture you desire.
Bring Your Own Bag: While paper bags are standard, bringing a reusable cloth bag or "torchon" is the traditional and eco-friendly way to transport your bread. It keeps the crust crisp without trapping too much moisture, which can turn a perfect baguette soggy by the time you get home.
Don’t Sleep on the "Tradition": While the classic "baguette blanche" is iconic, the "baguette de tradition" is legally regulated to contain only flour, water, salt, and yeast—no additives. These loaves generally have a superior flavor profile, a chewier texture, and a longer shelf life, making them the preferred choice of local connoisseurs.
Embrace the Seasonal Specials: Bordeaux bakeries shift their menus with the seasons. In autumn, look for tarts featuring walnuts and pears; in winter, seek out galettes des rois with frangipane; and in summer, indulge in apricot and verbena pastries. Asking what is "de saison" often reveals the baker’s most creative and freshest work.
The beauty of exploring Bordeaux’s bakeries lies in the connection between the land, the baker, and the table. Each crusty loaf and delicate pastry represents hours of patience and a respect for tradition that dates back generations. By visiting the addresses listed above, you are not just buying food; you are participating in a vital piece of the city’s living heritage.
As you walk through the Quartier des Chartrons or the Saint-Pierre district with a warm paper bag in hand, you will understand why the simple act of buying bread is sacred here. Whether you are a casual tourist or a dedicated food lover, the bakeries of Bordeaux offer one of the most accessible and profound pleasures the city has to offer.
