Colmar feels like a town pulled straight from a fairy tale, with its pastel half-timbered houses, winding canals, and flower-lined streets. But beyond the storybook facades and world-class Alsatian winstubs, the city quietly holds a rich and varied dining scene. For lovers of Japanese cuisine, this corner of Alsace offers everything from precise sushi counters to soulful bowls of ramen.
The local appetite for Japanese food has grown considerably over the last decade, moving far beyond simple salmon rolls. Today, you can find chefs who treat sushi as an art form, carefully sourcing fish and aging it to develop deeper flavor. You will also discover family-run kitchens serving comforting donburi, crispy tempura, and freshly rolled maki that rival what you would find in much larger French cities.
Dining out in Colmar often means balancing tradition with exploration. After a day spent wandering the Unterlinden Museum or cruising the Petite Venise canals, a delicate plate of sashimi can be a refreshing alternative to heavier regional specialties. The city’s Japanese restaurants also tend to offer calm, minimalist interiors, providing a peaceful escape from the busy tourist thoroughfares.
The best Japanese restaurants in Colmar are not concentrated in a single district. Instead, they are spread between the historic center and the quieter residential neighborhoods, meaning a short walk or tram ride can lead you to an exceptional meal. This variety also means you can find options for a quick lunch, a romantic dinner, or a celebratory omakase-style experience.
When choosing where to eat, it helps to look beyond the tourist menus posted near Place de la Cathédrale. Many of the finest kitchens rely on word of mouth and local regulars, offering seasonal specials that never appear on a standard printed menu. A willingness to ask for the chef’s recommendation often rewards you with the freshest catch of the day.
Below is a curated list of the twelve best Japanese restaurants in Colmar, selected for their quality of ingredients, consistency, and genuine hospitality. Whether you are a local or a visitor craving something precise and fresh, these addresses represent the strongest Japanese dining experiences the city has to offer.

This is one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. Will definitely come back again. It is also really nice that the menu is on an iPad and you can order whatever and whenever you want. The quantity is large and nice as good as the quality. The atmosphere is chill and nice . They have very nice decorations. The bathroom is very clean too 🤩

I was impressed that a place like Colmar has such an amazing Asian restaurant. The place itself is spotless and quite fancy. I reallt enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. The staff is very friendly, but it's the abundance of choice and the quality that this restaurant delivers, that really blew me away. At Suki you really get both quantity and quality. I would definitely go again to try their ramen, because that looked great too!

We went there twice. The first time we ordered beef ramen gyoza and beef stick thing. All was so good. I could not finish the ramen it was too much for me but it was delicious. Chicken gyoza was also good my bf loved it. The second time we tried bento 4 it was very satisfying. It had a lot on it. Sushi was not the best but okey. Then we tried meatball, beef cheese sticks they were so good. The place decoration is also nice. I recomend there.

We had a wonderful experience here. The sushi was incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was friendly. We truly enjoyed our time here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for excellent sushi and a great lunch experience.

Amazing food highly executed in a very cool part of town. The service was great considering they were very busy as well. Modern ordering by tablet and drinks are very well made too. Highly recommended and family friendly.

We visited Kitsune & Tanuki for brunch and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. We were lucky enough to sit in the beautiful garden, which is a peaceful retreat, thoughtfully decorated with a lovely mix of plants including bonsai and hydrangeas. The seating is comfortable and the whole space feels pretty and well curated.
The service was attentive and warm, making us feel genuinely welcomed throughout our visit. For food, we ordered the matcha crepe cake and the croissant waffle with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup, both paired with coffee. Everything was delicious.
The food and concept is exactly the kind of thing you’d stumble across in Singapore, where Asian inspired cafes with creative menus and aesthetics are part of everyday life. We didn’t expect to find anything like this in Colmar and it was such a wonderful surprise!
Beyond the garden, the interior is equally worth exploring, beautifully Japanese inspired in both its decor and seating, and doubling as a little shop selling unique Japanese stationery and charming knick knacks. It’s the sort of place where you want to linger, browse, and soak it all in.
Hana Marčetić★★★★★
Amazing experience! We were lucky to get in without reservation, but definitely recommend calling ahead - people were turned away for lack of space without booking in advance. Take your time here, taking the tea on tatami was so much fun, and they can do the matcha ceremony for you as well! Lovely aesthetic interior, and just overall a nice vibe
Lawkaanat★★★★★
We stopped by this Japanese Tea House on a rainy day, and it was the perfect cozy escape. We had the ramen with French pork (not chashu) in a soy milk broth — rich, creamy, and exactly what you want on a chilly day. The special tea called “Night at Versailles” was amazing — beautifully aromatic, slightly sweet, and so comforting.
Their caramel pudding is adorable (and kind of funny to eat) — it instantly puts you in a good mood. The interior is IG-worthy, with lovely décor and a few traditional Japanese-style floor seats that make it feel authentic and peaceful.
In the stillness of the garden, a Kitsune revealed itself — a messenger of spirit and change, reminding us that magic often hides in plain sight.
The staff were so friendly and sweet! I tried speaking to them in Japanese since I don’t speak French — but in the end, we all switched to English and laughed about it 😂. Such a warm, welcoming place — we’d definitely come back again!

The best matcha latte I've had in Europe. The mille-crepes is also very full of flavor, the perfect balance between the cream and matcha. If you're a matchaholic definitely try this spot out.
Melanie Mengüş★★★★★
The most magical coffee shop of Colmar! It is located in a quiet street inside a beautiful house. It's a cozy and modern Japanese tea room that also serves savoury food for lunch like ramen. But I only tried the sweet food and drinks.
I had the matcha mousse which was shaped in a bunny and served with a berry coulis. It was light but tasty! My Husband had the dango which is a kind of mochis served on a skewer. It was intriguing but good. The black sesame latte was good too but the Sakura tea was amazing.
However, I suggest you to book online before your visit because it's really busy. We visited on a Saturday afternoon without a reservation and we were lucky to have the last table. We came all the way from the UK so we would have been disappointed if we couldn't have a table.

We went to this Restaurant last night and had a truly unique and exceptionally well crafted experience. Everything just emanates the love, these hosts put into the place. From the Menu, with Japanese cuisine fused with Alsatian heritage, it is not only unique, but carries conviction and is something that you truly won't find anywhere else.
The wine menu is a great collection, the drinks unique and the service is just perfect.
I would go out of my way to eat here again.
Thanks a lot for the dinner!

Great cost restaurant for date night. Very friendly staff serving Japanese food. They offered us a small cold homemade tea followed by a very small bit of gazpacho. Food does take a while so only come here with people you want to hang out with. I would come back. The food is good but nothing special.

Love this new place!! Curated with elevated and artful design and love; my new favorite restaurant in Colmar (sorry Jy’s)!!! This is the perfect fusion of French/Japanese bringing together what I love best of both worlds.
Such care and enthusiasm bring this labor of love to life. Everything is very well thought out, from service to gastronomy. The timing and delivery of each dish was to perfection, indicative that every detail is taken into consideration to make the dining experience memorable and personal. Lots of fun and cool beverage options and knowledgeable wine selections. 🙌❤️🔥

Highly recommended - We had a lovely evening in the 5S slightly off the main road. It's a small local, so don't forget to book your table ahead of time. The food was amazing and the staff very friendly and attentive to allergies. Loved the Miso-Soup and the Bao Buns! Thank you for a lovely dinner.

We had a highly frustrating experience at Le 5s.
While the outdoor porch area was full, the inside of the restaurant was completely empty. Despite this, we were seated right next to the bathroom in an uncomfortably hot, stuffy indoor dining room and largely ignored.
To be fair, the food that we actually managed to eat—aside from the mains—was not bad at all; the starters tasted good.
However, the service completely ruined the evening. The waiter didn't write down our order, and predictably, our starters arrived with mistakes and less food than we ordered. Despite pointing this out, the missing food never arrived.
Meanwhile, the waiters went outside to smoke multiple times. At one point, our child found some child-friendly training chopsticks to play with, and the staff took the entire jar from the chopatick table, despite there being no other kids inside.
We arrived at 19:40, got starters around 20:10, and our main dishes didn't arrive until 20:50. We ordered three duck dishes, and all of them arrived cold. Because of the cooking level combined with being cold, they were completely inedible.
When I called over the waiter with the ponytail, he was shocked.
He took the plates away, only to return moments later to disrespectfully tell us that the food "wasn't cold to him." When I told him we didn't want anything else because we had already waited over an hour, he got angry and snapped that it took an hour "because there were starters."
We received zero apology and no compensation. To top it off, they got the bill wrong and charged us for the starter we never received. The kitchen has potential, but the disrespectful service, terrible timing, and cold mains made this a awful night out.

A small sushi spot in Colmar with a standard ambiance. We tried the maki, chicken karaage, beef rice bowl, and beer—all decent and up to standard. However, the service was quite slow as the staff seemed busy, making it hard to get their attention or settle the bill.

Very good food, awesome, quick, and kids friendly service. The place is casual and very clean. We had multiple sushi combinations, and all were great. The presentation could be better, but overall, it is recommended.
Prior reservations are needed even if it's not peak tourist season.

I've had dinner in this place, and sincerely I didn't enjoy it. The sushi wasn't bad but not what I expected. The salmon was elevated and not from the sea. It's not the best quality. The restaurant didn't even have music. It was really quite like a bit strange. The service was good. The waiter was friendly, but overall, I didn't like it.

Well, an eatery rather than a restaurant. But as also in highly frequented places like Colmar, the restaurants close (for meals) in the afternoons, we had no choice. And although the owners are Chinese, they have adopted that lack of friendlyness and respect for the guest by saying rather directly, up to unfriendly that we must hurry with our choice because the kitchen will close soon. Well, the Sushi was okay, nothing less but nothing more.
Be it for the food, the atmosphere or the permanent lack of smiles and friendlyness although I speak French, we will not visit that place anymore.

First things first; the castle on the table mats in the restaurant is not Nagoya Castle but Himeji Castle. With that out of the way hereby the review 😅
The food was great! In another (negative) review a persoon mentioned that the meat was oily. While it was a bit and not exactly like real Japanese yakitori it tasted great anyway. The sushi was great too. We didn’t have high expectations considering the area (not close to the sea and not known for sushi but for wine and asparagus…) but is was actually really good. Small criticism could be that the rice was just slightly too sweet but the taste overall and the quality of the fish was very good.
Has it been the best Japanese restaurant we have ever been to? No, but all in all still highly recommend if you want good sushi in the Elzas!

Though the dishes were supposed to be grilled but everything we ordered was dripping in oil and had absolutely no flavour. The calamari, prawns, mushroom etc, everything tasted like oil and nothing else. 68 Euros for 2, was a waste.

(1) We were friendly enough, brandishing Google Translate with smiles — greeted by flat, irritated expressions when we arrived. Bad day? (2) brief explanation that it’s buffet only via iPad, which works well after we convinced the lady we would like to stay. (3) Food served promptly. We ordered lots of skewers divided by fish eater and a meat eater who does not eat seafood, but we think they were cooked together coz the chicken tasted like fish. (4) small bottle of water costs more than €4 (5) no explanation on self-service so we didn’t see the sauce and desserts until after eating when I went to pay and saw all the extra selection on the other side of the center island, I asked the more friendly cashier and he said it’s included. Great. (6) we go back to the table, leave the iPad to show we’re not done yet, go to get dessert, came back to table without iPad and everything cleared away, table set up for new people. Errrr (7) finally go to pay still the cashier is the nicest person so far, the ladies who sat and served us still giving us flat, irritated looks. We felt so unwelcome. Not coming back. 2 bottles water, 2 soft drinks, “all you can eat” but only 5 plates each = €72
Sara Mclymont★★☆☆☆
Food quality was poor, everything seems to be prepared beforehand so the small portions of fish served in the sushi get kind of dry.
Some hygiene concerns: the waiter touched the gyozas with his hand while bringing the dish, this also happened with our cutlery… The floor was sticky like a disco at the end of the night.
It was quite full but the service was fast.

It was the second time we came here and just like the first time around we had an absolutely lovely evening. The food is pretty good, service and especially the speed at which the food is served is top notch.

This is not even close to a real Sushi restaurant. Sticky old rice wrapped in tiny pieces. There is very little in their "sushi" mostly rice with little bits of fish, etc. They are selling rice in small wraps with nothing else much in the way of ingredients; salmon, etc. This is a family, cheap meals restaurant posing as a Sushi restaurant. I'm from California, and know good Sushi; this place would go broke in any location that was aware of what real Sushi should be like. It's a factory to move people through feeding them rice and calling it Sushi. A joke really.

I came here because I was craving fiber in the form of vegetables. I got the chicken rice bowl, beef ramen, and vegetable stir fry. They were all very tasty! I do wish they added more pieces of meat to the ramen and rice bowl, but the price is reasonable. The staff are all very friendly! The restaurant itself is very clean and open. I think they more takeout than dine-in, so there is a lot of room. The service is quick.

Excellent café restaurant right in the middle of Petite Venise in Colmar. The limited alacarte menu is not bad if you like simple choices. The pasta dish was excellent, not so much with the meat dish (choucroute?). Pinot Noir wine was excellent & so smooth. Desert recommended creme brûlée and chocolate cake with café au lait. Price is about average but not excessive. Server Anna was very courteous and helpful with a charming personality. Overall we left happy with our choice.

Came here on a busy day for lunch. Probably influenced by the vacation/terrace season, but the waiters serving us looked like they hated working there. Especially the younger guy in wide jeans. The food was ok, though hospitality is zero. Paid €150 for a lunch for 4. Rather sit on a bench with a pastry than go through that again.

We really enjoyed this place! Sushi was very good. Good ramen. Good rice bowls. A solid options if you want to try a different cuisine!

The food is decent—nothing more than just nice. The real issue lies with the staff. After clearing tables, the waiters place plates back down carelessly, and then have the nerve to accuse customers if something falls or breaks. It’s an uncomfortable and unprofessional experience that overshadows the meal.

We visited Côté Sushi Colmar today and we are absolutely impressed.
We had actually ordered through Uber Eats beforehand, but unfortunately our order didn’t arrive due to an issue on Uber’s side. So we decided to go there in person and we are so glad we did.
We ordered sushi for takeaway and received such a warm and attentive service. The staff member was an extremely kind woman who helped us and took the time to explain everything which is something you don’t see very often.
The sushi itself was, without a doubt, the best we’ve ever had: extremely fresh, delicate, and full of flavor.
We waited about 20 minutes, which was clearly communicated to us in advance, so that was completely fine.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Overpriced and disappointing. The California rolls were tiny, not fresh, with gray avocado and dry rice that tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. Definitely not worth the price.

Very highly recommended for sushi lovers when visiting Colmar. The ambience is really calm and relaxing. They have a good outside seating but they do have a nice vibe inside. The sushi we ordered was veg and was really delicious. They do have a different way of packing their sauces. Overall representation was really awesome and so was the taste. The people at work are very friendly and nice. Would like to visit again.

Being used to a different eating schedule, we arrived at the restaurant at almost 3:00 PM, an uncommon time to eat in Colmar and the surrounding areas—and even less common for a restaurant to provide service at that hour.
However, that was not an issue at Côté Sushi Colmar. Not only did they serve us, but their waitstaff welcomed us warmly and kindly.
The place is truly peaceful, beautiful, and pleasant. We ordered a sushi platter and a poke bowl, and both were incredibly delicious and flavorful. The quality of the food was excellent. The portions were also just right and satisfying. On top of that, the prices were quite competitive compared to other restaurants in the area.
If you love sushi and visit Colmar, this is a must-try.
Highly recommended. When I return to Colmar, I’ll definitely come back!
Practical Tips for Choosing a Great Japanese Meal in Colmar
A little preparation goes a long way when selecting where to eat, especially in a city with so many competing options. These practical tips will help you avoid disappointment and find the style of Japanese food that best matches your mood, budget, and expectations.
Book ahead for evening service. Many of the best Japanese restaurants in Colmar have small dining rooms and only one or two dinner seatings. A reservation is essential on weekends and during the Christmas market season, when the city is at its busiest.
Ask about the fish delivery days. Freshness is everything in Japanese cuisine. Most serious sushi chefs receive fish on specific days of the week, usually Tuesday and Friday. If you want the best nigiri or sashimi, call ahead and ask which days they receive their seafood deliveries.
Look for daily specials written on a board. The printed menu is only part of the story. Many chefs list seasonal fish, wagyu specials, or limited ramen broths on a chalkboard or handwritten card. These items often represent the kitchen’s strongest current work.
Don’t overlook the hot dishes. A great Japanese restaurant is about more than raw fish. If you are dining with someone less enthusiastic about sushi, check the menu for katsu curry, yakisoba, agedashi tofu, or chawanmushi. These comfort dishes reveal a chef’s technique just as clearly as a slice of otoro.
Respect the pace of the meal. Japanese dining in Colmar is rarely rushed. Dishes arrive as they are ready, and a meal can easily take ninety minutes or more. Allow time to enjoy the progression, and avoid booking a table if you need to catch a train or tour within the hour.
Bring cash for smaller establishments. While most restaurants accept cards, a few smaller Japanese kitchens and lunch counters remain cash-only or have a minimum card spend. Checking in advance saves an awkward moment when the bill arrives.
Colmar’s Japanese food scene continues to evolve, with chefs becoming more ambitious and diners more knowledgeable each year. The best tables in town balance respect for Japanese tradition with the exceptional produce available in Alsace, creating meals that feel both authentic and distinctly local.
Whether you are seeking a quiet bowl of ramen after a rainy afternoon or an elegant sushi dinner to mark a special occasion, the city offers far more than expected. Use this guide as a starting point, then let your own curiosity lead you to your new favorite table in Colmar.
