15 Best Affordable Restaurants in Colmar

Dining well in Colmar does not require a reservation at a Michelin-starred table or a hefty bill at the end of the night. While the capital of Alsatian wine is famous for its half-timbered houses and rich gastronomy, it is also a city where hearty, authentic meals can be found for a fraction of the price you might expect.

The secret to eating cheaply in Colmar is knowing where the locals go. Away from the most tourist-heavy corners of Little Venice, family-run winstubs and modern bistros offer daily specials that highlight the best of regional produce without the premium markup.

Whether you are looking for a traditional choucroute garnie, a thin-crust tarte flambée, or a modern vegetarian bowl, the city’s affordable dining scene is surprisingly diverse. You can enjoy a sit-down meal with a glass of local Riesling for under €20 if you choose wisely.

This guide focuses on restaurants that deliver exceptional value without compromising on quality or atmosphere. Every entry has been selected for its consistency, generous portions, and genuine connection to Alsatian culinary traditions.

From bustling lunch counters perfect for a quick refuel between museums to cozy corner bistros ideal for a slow dinner, these spots prove that budget travel does not mean boring food. You will find options spread across the historic center and the quieter residential streets.

Below, you will find a curated list of the best budget-friendly tables in Colmar, followed by practical advice on how to maximize your dining budget in this beautiful Alsatian town.

Must visit when you are in Colmar. The flammkuchen is amazing, I had the strudel version one night and the original the next day for lunch. I did not reserve a space but it is a busy little spot. The hostess lady is one of the best for two reasons. One she remembered my drink order from the night before and secondly her interaction with guests especially speaking to Japanese tourists in their own language and seeing their amazed reactions was great to see. Definitely will be back next time in Colmar.

Tried Flambe for the first time here. We stayed 2 nights in Colmar and came for dinner each day 🙂 the food is great and the restaurant was always 90% full! Don't be fooled by the tickness of the flambe! Even if thin, it is very consistent! We bought 1 per person and it was great! The personal are also extremely nice and welcoming! Highly recommend!
Leslie Rivera★★★★★
Make reservations here! It is a very small place with an unassuming exterior (no tables lining the street, etc) but seems it is always full - we went in the evening and had to reserve for the next day. We’re here in June and they have two dinner seatings - at 7 and 9pm. They only have tartes flambées on their menu and it was the best I’ve had in Alcase! Favorite - the “Basilic”!

If you are looking for a Tarte Flambee then this is the place you need to try. Reservations are almost required because this location gets booked up in advance almost every night. It is small but the staff is friendly and the food and drinks are delicious! Worth the trip!

Looking for a flamkuchen ? look no more, you found the place to be. If you like a bite in a not overpriced, overhyped place, go here, the owner is very friendly and better yet the flamkuchen is pretty amazing. And the beer is cold too! Tip of the day, we saw two people ordering one at a time and share … looked like a great idea instead of ordering two if you are with someone. We found out too late, but next time we will go for the “share kuchen” as well!

If you are in Colmar and you want to have Flammkuchen for dinner, don't look further, this is the best place for Flammkuchen. They have lots of varieties and they are authentic. The waiters are professional and they looked after us nicely. The price is very good for the value of food you get and considering you are in the heart of the city centre. Recommended.

Two visits in a week when there are a multitude of places to eat in Colmar is sufficient to say we loved La Stub. This is a family run restaurant and that is clearly visible in the quality of the service: relaxed, helpful, friendly and smiley staff Then there were the tarte flambee’s. We tried 4 different ones. The one as good as the other. The only way is to go and experience it yourself
AJ★★★★★
First time eating flammekueche. Had one with ham and wild garlic and one with Szechuan pepper and the usual which is cheese, cured ham with cream cooked on a very thin “pizza like” base. The bases were very well cooked with a slight bit of darkness which enhanced the taste of the dishes We preferred the taste of the one without the peppers, not the pepper one was bad in any way. In actual fact the food was so good we immediately made a second booking. Staff were very helpful and friendly, even though there was a language barrier. If you are in Colmar, give La Stub a go. Hopefully your experience is a similarly good one

Small cute restaurant specialized in tarte flambée in many varieties. We tried two different versions, both of which were superb. Friendly and lively atmosphere and quick and friendly service.

This was one of the best and most beautiful experiences for the two of us. If I ever go back to Colmar again, it will definitely be because I want to eat your delicious food again.🩵

Very tasty food, excellent service. Highly recommended for Ćevapi and Goulash. Man has to feel that taste. The price-quality ratio is in good measure. High recommendation and I will be happy to go there again. Zorica and her son are excellent hosts.

We chose this restaurant based on its Google reviews, and it exceeded our expectations. The service was outstanding, the meat was fresh and delicious, and the portions were very generous. Highly recommended!

Tasty well prepared grilled meat, Welcoming service, reasonable prices. The restaurant is a bit crowded since there are so many tables with very little distance one from another (and they are all fully booked) Every meat dish comes with salad and french fries

Delicious and freshly made Tarte flambée! They found us a table quickly on a Saturday. Was good mix of locals and tourists. Friendly service and good drinks too - one of the best beers we had! Loved the Hansi water glasses too.

Stopped in for a quick lunch on our day trip to Colmar. Very accommodating friendly staff. We enjoyed dining by the canal and having the ‘mini Venise’ experience. The tarte flambé was very good and drinks were also great. Get the flambé with 3 beer sampler!

Great pizza place in the market with a big balcony right over the water and a beautiful view. Delicious flat bread (thin crust pizzas) with the freshest ingredients from the market.

Found this restaurant by chance, and it did not disappoint. Food was amazing. Since we hardly spoke any french the owner has been attending us who has been an absolute gem! Got amazing wine pairings, dessert recommendations and lot of laughter. Best Caesar salad and desserts. Since it was a full night it took longer for the food to arrive but that was fine since the good atmosphere also brings in amazing people to chat with. We live hours away but will make sure to come back as soon as possible! 10/10 would recommend

We found this French restaurant through google map. It didn’t disappointed us. Everything was almost perfect except waiting time for food. But good thing is always worth waiting. Waitress welcomed us in Chinese friendly. Food was delicious.nothing to complain about. The restaurant is not that big, full of customers most of time.

Amazing restaurant. We were lucky to get a table at lunch and they were very welcoming as we also brought our dog. Food was very good, especially the starter scallops. Also the wine was great. Lovely staff. Thank you! 🙏🏻

Food was average. The sides - mushrooms and potatoes are good. But the steak is not very good. Tasted more like chicken and doesn’t taste very fresh. Servers aren’t very nice. It’s way too expensive for this quality of steak.

If visiting colmar, this place is a must. Plenty of food for each meal, but quality on point too. The atmosphere outside is very cool by terrace. Seems a nice place for winter too. Very well attended by the waiters. We were very impressed by the restaurant and definitely would come back if I visit colmar again.
isabella cheng★★★★☆
Located in the center of historic Colmar. Three level building with seatings at 3 levels. It was early April when we came so outside was not available. Outside seating would be lovely. Food was ok. We ordered 4 mains. 3 were meh but the pork knuckle was really good with the honey sauce. Service was professional. We came at a busy time and it was clear that there was only one server helping the entire floor. But we enjoyed sitting in this historical building and looking out of the window while we waited.
Joyce Yong★★★★★
Really appreciate the restaurant staff’s approachable and service-oriented attitude. Place was packed yet the staff was welcoming and prompt to find a table for our group. Willing to explain the menu offerings. Food quality and portions are good. Loved the atmosphere and even the washrooms are clean and with nice decor. Diners of different age group. Pet friendly. Highly recommended.

Visited on a Sunday around 8pm. It was off‑peak season, but the inside was still very busy - luckily I managed to get an outdoor table. The food was great - the Flammekueche was delicious, and the salmon was thick, fresh, and full of flavour.
Vasley Green★★★★☆
I will give 5 star review on food , but unfortunately we find piece of sharp plastic in our desert, waitress did remove from check this order, all other food was great, service itself and waitress all perfect, at the end I will recommend this restaurant, definitely will come again.

While walking in the old town you come across this nice cafe with a terrace along the river. They have a good selection of small bites including cakes, bruschetta and ice creams and waffles. They have a staffs are attentive and fast. The location is great for its view of the city and river. Price is not an issue here. Overall worthy of trying.
Tina★★★★★
Wait before opening to get seated fast. The view is unbearable located with a look of a bridge over the canal.
Thibault van Rees★★★★★
Such a cute place with tasty food! The view from the terrace is stunning. Food really good. Note that they only serve meals (flammkuchen) until 14:00, afterward only appetizers and desserts. Additionally, no reservation is possible, so you might have to wait for a table when it is busy (definitely in high season).
Mark van Engeland★★★★★
Wow! I was amazed by the service of this restaurant. Very friendly staff. A limited choise of options on the menucard but they offer the local dishes of the region. The food was amazing! The views on the terrace are beautiful.
Tina Nguyen★★★★☆
Food and service was great! Very nice restaurant with outdoor seating right by the water and one small bathroom. The only issue was the five bees that kept coming to our table and food that made it very hard to eat. Otherwise, food was tasty and simple.

A must eat place in town! If I come first day already, for sure will eat here more than one time!! The food is great, service is welcoming, place is cozy!!! The restaurant is easily full, so recommend to make reservations.

Very interesting concept of a restaurant. It’s a small place with a few tables and only a few dishes on the menu (good selection of drinks though). Some may think the service is a bit slow but the sole waiter is very attentive and it’s really a one seating kind of thing - the atmosphere is nice, there is no rush and you can really enjoy your meal. I regret that we didn’t stay for dessert. Also, bonus points for being dog friendly!

We came here during our stop through Colmar and very glad we did. Everything is excellent - from service, wine, food and ambiance!! The restaurant offers small seasonal menu and we tried two different starters and two different mains, which are all delicious! Totally recommended.

Our friend took us to Colmar from Basel. We found Le Trois, walked in for lunch and sat outside. The plate of mixed meat and sausages and sauerkraut was big enough to share among 3 people. Reasonable price!
Petros PAPAZOGLOU PAPAZOGLAKIS★★★★☆
We visited Colmar in one of the most busy days of Christmas and we had a nice meal experience without previous reservation. Although, some of our ordering details were missed and the tart flambé was small in size and material richness, thus the 4*, the rest of portions were delivered OK and the service was very good.
Viktoria R★★★★☆
We got a table without reservation which was great because afterwards the restaurant was full. We were seated in a little room on the left side of the entrance which was a bit smelly (cheese mixed with room spray). The upstairs of the restaurant looked (and smelled) much nicer and high quality - so maybe we were just unlucky since we got the last table. However, the service was very attentive and friendly. I can recommend the veggie soup as well as the salmon which was super tasty. The tarte flambée with munster cheese was a bit too much cheese for my taste. But quality seemed good.
Bas de Jong★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, there is no cordon blue anymore as the restaurant recently changed ownership. We had to ask for the menu, as they forgot to bring it. Some waitresses could be more friendly, we were often met with indifference. The food was greasy, but the taste was ok. Children's menu not recommended, way too salty.
Óscar Manuel Perez Gonzalez★★★★★
I went with a friend of mine in our little trip around Strasbourg. We casually found the restaurant and we really liked it. Food was good, the place was so nice and the service was excellent. We were at the top floor, a young guy was our waiter and everything went perfect!! A big shout out for the guy that had our table, we were really happy for the service 🙂

Absolutely recommend this restaurant. Literally just off the beaten path and mêlée of the centre of Colmar. This is a beautiful restaurant with a good mixed choice of vegetarian and meat dishes. Service was amazing and very reasonably priced. Worth a visit

Great food. Great service. Was finally able to try one of the tartes as they offered a gluten free friendly version. Also offered a gluten free bun and several gf dessert options.

An amazing restaurant, they speak a lot languages and the menu is digital via QR code. The food is good and doesn’t take that long. There is a lot to choose from. Amazing vegan meals and choices available even for the drinks. The ambiance is great and very serene. A good place for friends, colleagues and family… The guy who served us was awesomely nice and very friendly spoke Spanish too. I was impressed by the design of the washroom! Very innovative. Everything was on point. I definitely recommend

We went to "La Cour des Anges" on a saturday afternoon, during the X-mas period. It's probably the busiest period, so get ready to be waiting a bit before getting seated. However, it is well worth it. We have been welcomed by the chef de salle, a loud, energetic, and friendly man. The restaurant is small, cute, and lively; a bit of Italian style. We liked it! We took 4 "tartes flambées"; 2 standards & 2 vegans. All were great: it was the best of the one we have tried in Alsace. There was a lot of effort in the vegan ones as well. Top notch! The restaurant offers many deserts made by a local artisan in Colmar. Those were fabulous. We highly recommend this place. The food was great, and the service was fast and friendly and venue charming. Price wise, it seemed very reasonable and completely worth the experience.
D★★★★★
They offer at least one vegan option in each category (entrée, plats, dessert) and it's the only restaurant in both Colmar and Strasbourg which has a vegan tarte flambée (flammkuchen)! I highly recommend it and the staff is very kind

So what can I say: respect. The possible combinations with tacos are enormous and even the smallest taco is the size of a hand. So there is enough food for the money and it tastes excellent. Rarely have I had such a good taco. 🌮 👌🏻 The Taco XL can be seen in the photo.

We had a fantastic meal at Winstub Factory in Colmar. The restaurant is modern, clean, and welcoming. The menu isn’t huge, but it offers a well-chosen selection of quality dishes. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel, which was enormous—thin, perfectly breaded, crispy, and served with French fries and a fresh salad. Ketchup and mayonnaise were provided, and we appreciated the complimentary carafe of water. The highlight of the meal was the veal escalope with homemade spaetzle and mushroom sauce. The meat was incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor—not dry at all. It was one of the best dishes we’ve had in Alsace. We finished with an espresso with milk, which was excellent. Overall, this was our favorite dining experience in Colmar. Highly recommended!

Big portions for a good price compared to the other restaurants in this area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Some of the food was very rich and would've needed a bit more sauce but overall we enjoyed our meal 🙂

The staff were very helpful and the space was lovely. The food was tasty with very generous portions. Our server even warned us that we had ordered a lot, which was true, but we were still able to take the leftover tarte flambée with us.

Worst restaurant ever. Ordered tarte flambée classique (Flammkuchen), it had so much oil and fat, the dough was completely wet through it. Couldn't even eat all of it And I love tarte flambée. Worst experience ever!

I’d give this place 4 stars. Overall, it was a good experience. The Flammekueche was tasty and well-made. However, the Choucroute wasn't quite what I expected. It lacked a bit of the traditional flavor I was looking for. Still, a decent meal in a nice setting.

A restaurant experience I will remember for years! My husband and I celebrated our 8-year anniversary at this restaurant. Start to finish, everything was simply incredible. The flavors and dishes were incredibly creative--and each plate was a culinary experience of the highest caliber that delighted the senses. Never before have I had cod with a savory, umami-packed sauce with morel mushrooms. It was a complete surprise but Chef Lucas pulled the unlikely ingredients together flawlessly for an unforgettable experience. The pigeon with lardons and cabbage was also simply amazing and the dessert was a decadent delight of strawberry and pistachio flavours. I must note that it is usually difficult to have a real gastronomic experience with food allergies and food sensitivities, especially with my intolerance to eggs and gluten, and yet Chef Lucas was able to adapt each dish expertly. And of course, I cannot end this review without mentioning the warm and generous welcome and service that we received. Everyone was incredibly attentive and went above and beyond to make our last night in Colmar and our anniversary extra special. Thank you to the entire team at Lucas & Chris! We will recommend your restaurant to everyone we know and we will surely be back the next time we're in Colmar.

We visited the restaurant for lunch with a reservation. We chose it because we had seen bone marrow on the menu on Google Maps. Although it was not listed on the restaurant’s menu, we asked about it and it was prepared for us. Even though the waitress spoke French and we spoke English, communication was smooth and clear. The food was very tasty, and the wine and water were served promptly. We especially appreciated the friendly and welcoming service.

We visited Lucas & Chris expecting a refined dining experience. The presentation was pleasant, the ingredients seemed to be of very good quality, and we appreciated the effort and friendliness of the team. However, some dishes lacked depth of flavor, and the overall experience did not fully match the restaurant’s positioning. The octopus was rubbery, and when ordering the beef, we were not asked for our preferred level of doneness. Service was courteous, though somewhat slow.We believe the restaurant has strong potential, and with a few improvements in execution, the dining experience could be better✨

We had dinner here last Thursday for my birthday while staying in Colmar. It was by far the best dinner I’ve ever had. The food, presentation, service, and atmosphere were far above and beyond our expectations! To top it off they brought us champagne to toast at the end!

How to Eat Well on a Budget in Colmar

Saving money on food in Colmar is less about sacrificing quality and more about adjusting your dining schedule and knowing the local customs. The French concept of the "formule" (set menu) is your best friend here, offering multiple courses at a single fixed price that is almost always cheaper than ordering à la carte. By understanding how the local restaurant industry operates, you can eat the same food as those paying top dollar, but at a significantly reduced price.

1. Prioritize the Midday "Formule"
Dinner menus in Colmar can be expensive, but lunch is where the value is. Most restaurants offer a two-course or three-course lunch menu on weekdays that often includes the same quality of cooking as the evening service for nearly half the price. If you have a specific restaurant on your wishlist that seems too pricey, check if they are open for lunch and book a table then.

2. Embrace the Tarte Flambée
Also known as Flammekueche, this Alsatian specialty is essentially a very thin, crispy dough topped with crème fraîche, onions, and lardons. It is traditionally shared, cut into slices, and it is incredibly filling. Because the ingredients are inexpensive to produce, restaurants price these very reasonably. Ordering two tartes flambées and a salad for a table of three is often the cheapest way to have a full, authentic dinner.

3. Look for the "Winstub" Over the "Restaurant"
The term "winstub" translates roughly to "wine room." These are traditionally small, wood-paneled taverns serving hearty local food and local wine by the pitcher or glass. They are usually much cheaper and more casual than formal restaurants. The atmosphere is often cozier, and the portions are designed for hungry workers, not tourists taking photos.

4. Skip the Canal-Side Tables
Location dictates price in Colmar. A restaurant located directly on the water in Little Venice or facing the Koïfhus (Old Customs House) will charge a premium for the view. You can often find the exact same quality of food—or better—by walking just two or three blocks away from the main pedestrian thoroughfares. Your wallet will notice the difference immediately.

5. Drink the House Wine
In Alsace, the "vin de la maison" or house wine is almost always a local varietal served in a traditional green-stemmed glass or a carafe. Restaurants have direct relationships with nearby vineyards, meaning the house wine is usually a very good Riesling, Pinot Blanc, or Sylvaner. It costs a fraction of a bottled vintage and pairs perfectly with the regional cuisine.

6. Visit the Covered Market for Snacks
If you want to save money on one meal a day, head to the Marché Couvert (Covered Market) on the banks of the Lauch River. Here, you can assemble a picnic of local cheeses, cured meats, bread, and fruit for a few euros. It is a great way to experience the local produce and save your budget for a proper sit-down dinner later in the evening.

7. Be Aware of "Service Compris"
Unlike some other countries, the price you see on the menu in Colmar is the final price. Service and tax are included by law. This means you do not need to calculate an additional 15-20% tip. While it is polite to leave a few euros in cash if the service was excellent, you do not need to factor a large tip into your budget, making the listed prices more affordable than they initially appear.

The beauty of eating affordably in Colmar is that you are not forced to settle for international fast food or bland tourist traps. The local cuisine, based on cabbage, potatoes, pork, and dough, is naturally rustic and inexpensive to produce.

By following the lunch crowds, looking for the daily specials written on chalkboards outside, and venturing slightly off the main square, you will discover that Colmar offers one of the best value dining scenes in the Alsace region. The money you save on food can be better spent on exploring the Unterlinden Museum or buying a bottle of wine to take home with you.
