Shopping for groceries in Strasbourg is more than a routine chore; it is an immersion into the culinary soul of Alsace. From the cobblestone lanes of Petite France to the bustling squares of Neudorf, the city’s retail landscape offers a fascinating blend of French gastronomic tradition and German efficiency. Whether you are a local resident seeking the freshest produce or a traveler looking to assemble a perfect picnic of Munster cheese and Gewürztraminer, knowing where to shop is essential.
Strasbourg’s supermarket scene is remarkably diverse, ranging from sprawling hypermarkets on the city’s periphery to compact urban express stores designed for the daily commute. Unlike many cities where one chain dominates, Strasbourg enjoys a healthy competition between French giants, German discounters, and specialized organic cooperatives. This variety ensures that regardless of your budget, dietary preferences, or neighborhood, you have access to high-quality ingredients.
Understanding the local retail rhythm is key to a successful shopping trip. Many larger stores close on Sundays, while smaller city-center shops often operate seven days a week to cater to tourists and busy professionals. Additionally, the concept of "terroir" is taken seriously here; even the most standard supermarket chains in Strasbourg typically stock an impressive array of regional wines, choucroute, and artisanal pretzels that you would not find in other parts of France.
This guide is designed to cut through the confusion and help you navigate the best options available. We have analyzed factors such as product freshness, price-to-quality ratio, availability of organic and local produce, and overall shopping experience. We focus not just on where you can spend money, but where your money goes the furthest in terms of taste and quality.
For expats and international visitors, we have also considered the availability of international ingredients. Finding the right spice for a curry or the correct cut of meat for a traditional dish can be challenging in a new country, but Strasbourg’s top markets have risen to the occasion, offering global aisles that reflect the city’s international status as the capital of Europe.
Below, we present our curated selection of the twelve best supermarkets in Strasbourg. This list is designed to help you find the perfect store for your specific needs, whether you are doing a massive weekly stock-up or simply grabbing a fresh baguette and a bottle of local Riesling for dinner.

The supermarket is huge and has many options but a couple of comments about:
- The personal working on the self-service side are friendly and helpful but the ladies working at la caisse are less welcoming, hurrying up to conclusions that create misunderstandings, it would be nice if they listen more
- There are plenty of products and options, sometimes some discounts too
- You have a frigo with discounts, some are nice but I think that 20% of discount for some products that expire the same day is not enough. Some are extremely expensive to buy them the same day of their expiration.
- My main remark: you had a poulet rôti that was so good, 8.5€, it was a success. Suddenly, you increased the price to 10.50€, 2€ in one day! +20%? That's too much! Today I found 1/2 poulet rôti, no more "poulet rôti entier", different brand, 5€. The previous one (8.5€) has a better taste and was the favourite meal for Les Halles employees. When something is working so well, why to ruin it like that in less than a week?

It's a terrible shopping experience. I bought a 250gr frozen fillet salmon, it's labelled 3.6 Euro, but when we checked out, it turned out to 5.95 euro. It's not about the amount of the money, it's more about the feeling. So, I came to accueil desk to return them. But the older woman staff just said NO and did not want to explain anything. The feeling of being disrespect to the customer (maybe because of we are the foreigners). After few minutes, other woman staff came and tried to explain that they can not receive the frozen food after checked out. I was ok with that but I will never come back to shop here because of very bad attitude of that staff.

Outstanding customer service today, August 9, 2025, from the entire Auchan Customer Service team—especially Sandrine, the manager of the French department! A big thank-you to Sandrine and her team for making my teenage son fall in love with brioche bread all over again!

Bought full load of groceries from the supermarket. Great options of everything. Queue was long but one kind cashier called upon us to come forward to a separate counter, so that was a nice gesture.

It is pretty great. The staff is helpful and the shelves are usually packed.
The only downside is the lack of certain products, as in they aren't sold by the supermarket.

This supermarket has everything that you would need if you needed to eat any snacks or fresh fish and chicken or cheeses and vegetables. The only downside is that there are no hot foods ready to eat it at is what you are looking for.
Jessie Ong★★★★☆
It is located at ground floor of Olaces de Halles. We got off the tram and walked in to grab some sparkling waters along our way back to hotel. A supermarket that offers good value and fresh foods.
Pascale McNamara★★★★☆
Great location in the centre of the city, convenient, has all the essentials and open on the 8th of May (public holiday in France).
JB★★★★☆
Decent little supermarket with almost everything you would need. Some things are quite expensive though, especially chocolate.
A Beats★★★★☆
If you need essentials on holiday call in here, they sell just about everything you need for a reasonable price. A bottle of water is about 19 cent! They also sell Oatmilk and soya and have a range of other dietary specialist foods. Access is ok for wheelchairs however there is an upper level with stairs, I'm sure assistance would be available if needed. There are self service machines that use card payments and some for cash payments, also a cashier if you need help packing bags.

Large grocery store with all the basics at the far end of the Rivetoile Shopping Center. Lower level of the mall with parking garage adjacent to the mall.
Clothing, household products, toiletries plus bakery, deli, meat department, large wine department and frozen foods.
There is a large self checkout area and checkout options with cashiers.
The grocery store is large, but always busy.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars

One of the worst hypermarkets I've visited in France, quite disappointing. The store is smaller than expected, and the parking is inconvenient and paid (free when spend over €20). The location is also confusing, you should park in underground P1, not the cinema P2. It lacks the charm of French grocery stores. We mainly came to buy meat (rabbit, goose, horse), but couldn't find what we usually get at other E.Leclerc stores, so we ended up paying for parking for nothing. I would much rather go to Soufflenheim.
Yaroslav Zhydenko★★★★☆
Nice supermarket in the shopping center Rivetoile. Very good choice of fruits and vegetables. Prices are slightly higher than in other grocery stores. Self-scan rarely works well, so be ready to rescan your goods at the cashier. Loyalty program could be better.
Gryno★☆☆☆☆
Today, they sold us cooked shrimp that were rotten! The smell is horrible, and each second one has gray rot near its head. Check and smell before paying, and be careful! (They have three sizes for sale; the rotten ones were small ones, sold by weight.)

My experience with Leclerc of rivetoile. I’ve been going to this grocerie store since my first born was 3 years old. Is an average size, you will found most products but some missing here and there. Some products are misplaced, the customer service is average, the vigilantis it’s spot on they’ll identify a thief by the glance of the eye.
I’ve had a horrible, disgusting unbelievable treatment. Let me tell you this if you can avoid doing your groceries at Leclerc do so. Please
There’s #Edeka in Khel Germany very affordable and customer service it’s spot on

Great place for shopping. Low in price good quality stuff. No long queues. Recommended.
Matthew Gordon★☆☆☆☆
They decided to close a few minutes early instead of selling me a couple things including diapers for my child… they didn’t even realize they had customers because they only cared to leave
Then after I handed the products back they sized me up as if to see if I had stolen products in my pockets. Absolutely disgusting behavior. Just go to any other store.
Riz★☆☆☆☆
Rude, arrogant security and supervisory staff despite the amazing kind other staffs!!! apparently he saw me steal and when he saw that I hadn't, he rudely and loudly told me I need to show open and show my bag before I enter the shop. which is not true! I have been shopping in this simply for about 10years and to which he said "even if it has been 10 years you open your bag and show it". Again, under no law are we obligated to open our personal bags and show our stuff to him. His lack of experience in his job is his own responsibility not the clients! unacceptable demeanor from supervisory staffs sadly ruin the whole experience of grocery shopping in this location.
Vania Pramatatya★★☆☆☆
the security guard behaviour is not nice to tourist. He just blabbering why I cannot speak french while seeing me in difficulties when trying to open the exit gate instead of helping me how to. I was helped by other customer tho’.
it wouldnt be an issue if the guideline are also in english & since no staff speak english, i dont think its wise to just standing and not helping.

Super! This outlet is not so spacious as other Auchan outlets, due to the near to the city center. But we were thrilled because of the wide range of items to buy. The shop management has successfully solved the challenge to present a large number of useful items for shopping. At all price levels, you can also buy some premium articles if you wish. First we just entered the shop to buy some typical spices and baguettes. At the end our cart was full with cheese, wine, mustard, many sorts of bread and others - for a sum of some 30 Euros.

Very convenient place to shop. It isn’t big but has enough of a selection that it should be fine for something quick. It also has a decent amount of wines to choose from if you’re in a bind. I overall enjoy stopping here.
Emilija Riaukaite★★★★★
As a super small supermarket it's very well thought out. They have a good selection of pretty much everything and a huge selection of wines, too. If you're in a rush to get to a bus station nearby, this is a good place to get some last minute food souvenirs and snacks.

My wife and I came for a trip to Strasborg. We bought something at the market. After the cashier realized that we did not speak French, he checked our bags for so called “security reasons”. He didn't treat other customers the same way. We're not thieves. But he treated us like a thief. It was a racist approach. We sent messages to Carrefour France via social media. But we didn’t get any response from them. If you are a tourist and do not want to be humiliated, I recommend you to not shop there.

Small one actually, options are low when you compare to other carefures but nice have a microwave in it. so you can prepare your meals just in the market.

Absolutely amazing selection of products, especially meats, bakery and cheese. The store branded products are outstanding! The produce variety is great, but a lot of it is already rotting from the inside out. The clients shopping there make for a hectic environment, and the employees seem to hate their job and move incredibly slow compared to other stores. People not fluent in French are treated like outsiders compared to other stores, and makes me feel not welcome to shop there. The interaction between the cashiers at Auchan and Intermarche is so polarized and different that even saying Bonjour makes me feel like they don’t even want to engage in basic greetings with their customers. The cashiers ask for “zero” change to make the cash return process easier on themselves, ask if you want a receipt where Auchan cashiers don’t ask either because they don’t want to engage with customers. They never have a smile on their face. It is not worth the savings to shop there anymore unfortunately.

Nice Hypermarket, good selection of products, but to find the promo is sometimes confusing. It is different than on web, print leaflets. Process to pay is very slow, but it improved a bit since the self-service counters were installed.

I live about 10 minute drive away but never felt comfortable shopping here. Anyway, on a recent Saturday, due to close by roadworks, I ended up missing the intended supermarket and passing this, so thought I'd give it a try again. OMG, there were so many people it was like a busy airport. Not a single checkout was free, huge queues even for self-checkout. We stood debating for a minute or two, then decided to leave without purchase. Was no way to just leave, so we asked a member of staff, and they said we must go all the way to end of the store (to come all the way back again). I felt trapped somewhere I really didn't want to be. I will never go back there again.
EDIT - RESPONSE: I'm sure you [copy/paste] are.

My first experience in Auchan in the last 30 minutes before closing was great. Huge shop, big choice. The most important thing is that it works till 21!
I like that they sell food with short expiration date on reduced price, instead of just throwing away. Polite and helpful stuff. Free parking. AC in a hot day is perfect. Will come here again

The sign says they close at 21:00 but they would not let me in …at least 10 minutes before this time. If you’re going to do this, then why not write this at your entrance.
The security man was quite polite and I had a pleasant conversation with him. He said that 80% of shops do this. I politely asked for the manager but was told there wasn’t one and wouldn’t be one until next week. Now that bit sounds strange, but hey.
I had planned a couple of purchases earlier in the day and to come just before closing time sounds wouldn’t need to carry them around…that plan failed lol.
No massive deal, I found another shop 10 minutes later also closing at 21:00 and they were happy to serve me.
Weiqiang Chen★★★☆☆
I regularly visit here for food and drinks, before taking the trains. It has good prices, especially considering the location nearby the main station. One thing I don't like is they always try to check your bags. They won't force you though, but an unfriendly look would be given when being refused. Is it even legal?
Mona Adel★★☆☆☆
This is almost a carrefour express. A lot of stuff is not there and a small tiny grocery shop where do you find overpriced stuff. The Carrefour in Paris are more bigger and have a lot of varieties.
ZX.Streetview★☆☆☆☆
If customers aren’t allowed to walk in at 12:50 p.m. on a Sunday, they might as well change the closing time to 12:50. It’s frustrating to rush to the shop only to be told that no more entries are allowed.

A local supermarket with good variety of fresh foods: meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits. Staff were friendly. Good price and good value
Nicole Coutts★★★★☆
Great location and well stocked with a wide variety of products, making it an easy one stop shop. Unfortunately we arrived in Strasbourg late in the day on Christmas Eve and had to check in/offload our luggage quickly and do a quick shop before everything closed. It was our first stop in France, so I wasn’t aware that we had to weigh fresh produce before heading to the check out (it’s different in Australia), so I had to run back and weigh a couple of things mid-check out. The staff member in the produce area scolded me as it was close to closing time. I appreciate it was Christmas Eve and the store was super busy, so I still gave 4 stars, but in other less stressful circumstances, I would’ve given a one star rating as it was a very unpleasant welcome to the country. Thankfully the remainder of our stay in Strasbourg was wonderful.
Omar M★☆☆☆☆
Great variety and all, BUT
I found a piece of glass in my muffin? It was lodged up pretty well, so I was able to take a picture? This is a serious health hazard. Very unexpected for a supermarket to have this!
Alison Eckard★★★★★
Y'all need to be nicer to the employees here. I am a resident of Strasbourg and shop here multiple times a week. This is an excellent grocery store and the people work hard. Sure, they might not be all warm and fuzzy, but how can you expect them to in a town full of rude tourists. At the end of the day, this is a 5 star grocery store in a busy part of the city. Who ever is running and managing it is doing GREAT.
Andy Beth Miller★☆☆☆☆
The blonde woman at the checkout this morning was so hostile... it took me aback how rude she was... unnecessarily, too. I think she just did not want to be bothered with actually checking me out versus me going through self checkout, but I had several items so I approached the regular checkout to not hold up the self checkout (trying to be thoughtful). I ended up running back toward the self checkout after faced head on with her truly aggressive rudeness... jarring. Either way, it is enough to make me walk half a mile further to go elsewhere when I have time now. No one needs to start their morning off feeling bad!

Unecceptable behavior from the security employees who demand each time (at least from me), to have my business backpack left on their hands during my shopping for security reasons.
If you want personal staff to be kept on the entrance (if it is legal), you have to offer lockers.
I will never have my backpack which contains my laptop, business documents etc, to anyone. For security reasons.
This happens every time I visit the super market and we always have this argument.
The last time being there, they did not even allow me to do my shopping and I had to leave the super market.

Makes now 3 days that there is one réfrigération system not working. Still all the cheese and dairy products are supposed to stay at low température in it. today I have seen it is at 16oC, I wonder why it has not been repaired not signal to consumers.
I saw on Friday 15th the Fridge was showing 22oC and on Sunday it was showing 16oC, I assumed it was not repaired on saturday, hence to my view that makes 3 days in a raw without repair.
I am not shocked that the fridge breaks down but I am puzzle why all the dairy was still on sale.

I visit quite frequently and have never had a complaint, however tonight I went 10 minutes before they closed to grab a bottle of wine and a stick of butter. I’d have been out of there in 3 minutes.
I hadn’t even stepped foot into the store before the older lady with black hair started YELLING at me that they were closed. She shooed me out of the store 10 minutes BEFORE the actual closing time.

The worker charged me for the wrong type of tomato (which wouldn't be a big deal but the others were over a euro more per kilo). I brought this to the cashier's attention and while she acknowledged her mistake she reused to rectify it saying the French equivalent of "oh well, it's done now. I didn't notice which one I entered in." Perhaps the store just really needed the extra money because they'd mischarged someone else and didn't want to fix that, either. Mistakes happen but refusal to fix them is not cool.

Tips for Grocery Shopping in Strasbourg
To make the most of your grocery budget and time in this vibrant Alsatian city, it helps to understand a few local nuances. While the supermarkets listed above offer excellent quality, the experience of shopping in France—and specifically in Strasbourg—comes with its own set of unwritten rules and practical considerations. The following tips will help you navigate the aisles like a local, avoid common tourist pitfalls, and ensure you get the best value for your money while respecting the local culture.
Bring Your Own Bags and Weigh Your Produce
Plastic bags have largely been phased out in France, and while reusable bags are available for purchase at the checkout, they come at a cost. Always keep a few sturdy tote bags in your car or backpack. Additionally, in the produce section, you are expected to weigh your fruits and vegetables using the scales provided and print a price sticker before heading to the cashier. Forgetting to do this can cause delays and frustration for those waiting in line behind you.
Understand the Sunday and Holiday Schedule
Unlike many capital cities, Strasbourg observes strict trading laws. Most large hypermarkets and supermarkets outside the city center are closed entirely on Sundays and public holidays. If you need groceries on a Sunday, your best bet is to visit the smaller "City" or "Express" formats located in tourist zones or near the train station, though expect to pay slightly higher prices for the convenience.
Look for the "Anti-Gaspi" Sections
Food waste is a major concern in France, and supermarkets are legally required to donate or discount products nearing their expiration date. Look for the "anti-gaspi" (anti-waste) shelves or refrigerated sections, often marked with orange or yellow stickers. This is an excellent way to save money on premium items like smoked salmon, organic yogurt, or high-quality cheeses that are still perfectly good to eat but need to be consumed within a day or two.
Embrace the Local Brands and Private Labels
While you will recognize international brands, the best value and often the best quality come from French private labels. Look for "Reflets de France" or regional brands that focus on Alsatian specialties. For everyday staples, the supermarket’s own brand—such as "Marque Repère" at Leclerc or "Monoprix Gourmet"—offers exceptional quality at a fraction of the price of name brands. Don’t be afraid to experiment; the standard for store brands in France is exceptionally high.
Recycle Your Bottles for a Deposit
In many of the larger supermarkets, particularly those with a high volume of beer and wine sales, you will find reverse vending machines near the entrance. Alsace has a strong beer culture, and glass bottles often carry a small deposit (consigne). Collecting your empty bottles and feeding them into these machines will earn you a voucher to deduct from your next shopping bill. It is an easy way to be eco-friendly and save a little money.
Exploring the supermarkets of Strasbourg offers a genuine insight into the daily life of the city. Whether you are charmed by the organic selection at a local co-op or impressed by the sheer scale of a hypermarket on the outskirts, each store serves a distinct purpose. By choosing the right market for your needs, you can elevate your cooking, save money, and experience the rich agricultural heritage of the Alsace region from the very first aisle to the checkout counter.
