12 Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a city that wears its history and culture on its sleeve, and nowhere is that more delightful than at the family dinner table. As the capital of the Alsace region, it offers a unique blend of French finesse and German heartiness, creating a culinary landscape that is surprisingly welcoming to younger diners. Navigating a new city with children in tow can be a challenge, but Strasbourg’s relaxed winstubs and modern brasseries often make it easier than you might expect.

The key to a successful family meal here lies in knowing where the atmosphere is warm enough to absorb the happy chaos of childhood and where the menu goes beyond the standard kids’ fare. From the picturesque canals of Petite France to the stately squares around the Cathedral, many establishments have mastered the art of catering to both sophisticated adult palates and picky eaters. The local specialty, tarte flambée, is a universally loved dish that children tend to adore, making it a perfect entry point into Alsatian cuisine.

Beyond the food itself, practical considerations matter. You want to know if there is enough space for a stroller, whether high chairs are readily available, and if the staff will greet your children with a smile rather than a sigh. The best family-friendly restaurants understand that parents need to relax, which means efficient service and a layout that doesn’t make you feel like you are disturbing the peace.

This guide focuses on establishments that consistently deliver on those practical needs without sacrificing the authenticity of the local dining experience. We have prioritized locations that are central to the main sights, reducing the walk for little legs, and that offer a variety of options to suit different appetites. Whether you are looking for a quick bite between museum visits or a leisurely dinner to cap off a day of sightseeing, there is a table waiting for you.

We have also considered the sensory environment. While some children thrive in a bustling, energetic room, others need a quieter corner to decompress. The recommendations below include a mix of lively traditional spots and calmer, more spacious venues so you can choose the right fit for your family’s mood on any given day.

Here is our curated selection of the best places to eat with your family in Strasbourg, based on local reputation, menu variety, and genuine hospitality for all ages.

Hey Mama Cathedral is a great spot in Strasbourg if you’re looking for a lively brunch, lunch, or dinner in a stylish setting. The interior is beautifully decorated with a trendy, colorful atmosphere that makes the place feel vibrant from the moment you walk in. The food was delicious, with generous portions and beautifully presented dishes. Everything was fresh and full of flavor, making it a place you’ll want to come back to explore more of the menu. The location, just a short walk from Strasbourg Cathedral, is perfect for taking a break while exploring the city. The staff were friendly, and the overall atmosphere was energetic without feeling overwhelming. A great address for anyone looking for good food, a beautiful setting, and a fun atmosphere in the heart of Strasbourg.

The place is amazing 🤩 the vibe, the food, the service ❤️ we had a lovely time enjoying a great meal and chattering with the owner who gave us cool tips for our Straßburg weekend. Definitely recommended 👌
The London Guru★★★★★
Very good food with an interesting and creative mix of fresh ingredients. Cozy atmosphere, mostly locals, which is always a good sign. Good service, friendly and nice staff. We had Eggs Benedict with chorizo and a waffle with salmon, and both were excellent.

Food ok-ish. We unfortunately didn’t feel very welcome with children. I do think, though, that the experience might be quite different if you ask to have brunch in the children’s room itself. That way, the staff may feel more relaxed about the children playing. The place is advertised as kid-friendly and has a dedicated play area, which is exactly why we chose it for brunch. Our children were playing and behaving like normal children do in a space designed for them, yet we constantly felt as though we were somehow being hurried to leave — even though, for most of the time, they were the only children in the playroom. We eventually decided to leave when the waitress came over and told us, with a very visibly annoyed attitude, that the children were “on the table.” When I went to check, they were actually only sitting on one of the chairs in the playroom, calmly, at a table that had been empty until them, when another family wanted to sit there. Of course they needed to move, and they did immediately. But this could have been communicated normally, rather than as though the children had done something terrible! At that point, it really reinforced the feeling that we were expected to leave, even though I hadn’t even finished my coffee. For a place that specifically promotes itself as family- and child-friendly, the whole experience felt surprisingly uncomfortable. Of course, nobody expects the restaurant to be a daycare (as they remind you :)) ), and children remain entirely the parents’ responsibility. What I still don’t understand is whether parents are actually supposed to be able to have brunch nearby (as they advertise) while their children play independently in the children’s room, or whether a parent is expected to stay in the room with them at all times, regardless of the child’s age, simply for the staff to feel comfortable. The way the space is advertised suggests the former, but our experience made it feel much more like the latter. If it is the last option I do not understamd why we were not placed in the room, although it was free for 90% of the time we were there. I think they should reconsider their advertising and decide if they really want children on the ground :)). Seems a little bit stressful for them as a business.
Filip Schäfer★★★★☆
Very delicious food and a lovely, cozy atmosphere. The staff were very friendly, although you could tell they were a bit overwhelmed at times. Our request to have the coffee served together with the food was unfortunately ignored. Overall, however, it’s highly recommended with excellent food—just keep in mind that it is on the expensive side.

This place is located in a more calm alley within the busy streets of the centre. We came on a saturday later in the evening. We were accepted without a reservation, but we did have to wait in queue, which is absolutely fine. We got seated on a bigger table with another group of people that also did not have a reservation. The staff was very friendly and quick to help. We got our food relatively fast. The food was amazing and not expensive at all for the quality and portion size you get. Sadly there are a few lesser details I must point out. The seats were not all of the best quality, most of our water glasses had small pieces missing and a beggar came by our table to ask for money with the waiter standing right with us, not doing anything about it. To sum it up: Definitely come by if you want to eat good quality food later in the evening, but make sure to make a reservation if you do not wish to wait for a while before getting a table.

A great choice for families! We found this restaurant through online reviews, and it was definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere is lovely, with lots of greenery that makes the place feel relaxing and inviting. We arrived at around 5 PM and only had to wait a short time for a table. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our meal. The food was well-prepared and flavorful, although the taste wasn’t quite what we personally prefer. One thing we really appreciated was the kids’ menu. Instead of typical children’s meals, they offer smaller portions of their regular dishes, which is a great idea and much more suitable for kids. Overall, it’s a great choice for families, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere, thoughtful kids’ menu, and excellent service. We’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a meal with family.

Perhaps the restaurant’s popularity has attracted a lot of tourists. However, because it’s so crowded, the quality has also been affected to some extent. People come here hoping to enjoy delicious, special dishes. But if you’re just looking to fill your stomach, there are plenty of other places that are just as good, cheaper, and don’t require squeezing in and waiting. I was a bit disappointed to see the bottom of the Flammkuchen burnt black. Maybe that’s meant to be this dish’s signature style? If so, it’s not for me, since it had a bitter taste. My salad plate cost €9.80 — just some salad, corn, a bit of dressing, and crispy fried chicken. The upside would probably be the service staff and the location.

We came for dinner and there was already a wait. Good news is the wait wasn't long, especially if you're open to being seated inside. Once seated, it did feel like a nice French atmosphere. Stoney walls, low ceilings, and music all added to the ambiance. The restaurant offers a smaller menu, still plenty of options but not overlydone. to me, that's always a sign that food is prepared fresh. Then starters came out pretty quick, a watermelon feta salad as well as some sauerkraut balls. I am not a fan of sauerkraut, but these things were delicious! Our dinner was the flamekuchen and fish and chips (limited pescatarian options). Initially, they brought us the wrong dish out but let us keep it once they brought the right one out. it was definitely too much food for us. however, everything was delicious!! very well made, more than plentiful serving sizes, ingredients felt fresh - food was delightful. overall, definitely worth visiting. if you want to sit outside, I would suggest reservations in advance. it should be noted that that vegetarian or pescatarian options are a bit limited.

We went in rather early without a booking and we were lucky enough to get the last table. We were 3 people but we sat at a 2 person table. This place serves Alsace food which is influenced by both the French and German cuisine as Alsace was previously under the German rule. We had the traditional Alsace food a spaetzle munster, which is cheese with egg noodles and a waedele au munster, which is the pork knuckle. The cheese in all of the dishes were so nice. The pork knuckle was nice, but the noodle was terrific. The other dish we had was the tarte flambée, which is basically pizza with a lot of cheese and it also taste great. It was such a memorable meal. We got one dry and one sweet wine that we ask the waiter to commend us. Both great. The price on this meal was also surprisingly cheap, considering the quality of the food. Highly recommend. We recommended some friends who were going to Strasbourg to try this restaurant but it was full and they couldn’t get in.

It was not easy to find a table to have lunch because we were a big group, but this place accepted the challenge. They have a very big outside area. It's a great place to taste this kind of very special pasta that they have in this area. For us it was delicious.

Host is gracious. Food served in large portions and very tasty. Mocktails is very good. Won’t recommend the salad with beans and eggs- dressing is not a good match. The sausage dish is great.

Solid restaurant close to the train station with many Alsatian classics. Everything tasted good and portions were generous. We particular enjoyed how the sauerkraut wasn't as sour/tart as others we had while in Alsace.

Excellent local restaurant not far from the station. Serves local Alsace specialities and lots of special dishes. Good wine selection and draught beer. Service was good with attentive staff with a smile. Recommended if you are in the area

Without a doubt, this was my favorite restaurant during our trip through Alsace. Every detail exceeded our expectations. The tuna quiche was absolutely outstanding, and the main course I chose was cooked to perfection. We ended the meal with a delicious pear tart, which was the perfect finale to an unforgettable dining experience. Among all the restaurants we visited in the region, this one was by far the best. I feel incredibly lucky to have found it, and it was a real pleasure to meet the talented chef behind these amazing dishes. You can truly taste the passion and craftsmanship in every bite. The staff were exceptionally kind, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. The restaurant itself was spotless, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere. On top of that, the prices were very reasonable considering the outstanding quality of the food and service. If you’re visiting Alsace, don’t miss the chance to dine here. It was one of the highlights of our trip, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Service was fantastic. The young man serving me was attentive but let me take my time. Loved the escargot and kouglaf glacé. The jambonneau was decent and quite large. Worth the price and visit

Great Alsatian restaurant! We arrived on Friday night and the restaurant was fully booked. However our hotel owner had some connection to them and squeezed us in! The food was great - their flambees were higher quality compared to others I had in the town. Sausages were also good, but i cannot comment since im not an expert on that. The only downside was that we had to wait 30 min to get a check because the place was so busy! The owners(?) servers(?) were very kind and helpful. We had to use Google translator a bit, but went out well.

5 stars. Absolutely loved this place. The atmosphere feels like stepping into an old Strasbourg postcard with traditional Alsatian dishes, cozy streets, and amazing service. The onion soup was rich and flavorful, the fish dish was incredibly fresh, and the baked specialties were comforting and delicious. Everything tasted homemade and authentic. Friendly staff, beautiful presentation, and a perfect spot to experience local cuisine in Strasbourg. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants during the trip and a place I would happily visit again.

Au Vieux in Strasbourg was one of our highlights for the day during our visit to the Alsace region. 🇫🇷 The restaurant has a wonderfully authentic French atmosphere, with elegant décor, excellent service, and high-quality food that made every dish a pleasure to enjoy. We loved the whole experience, and I would happily recommend it to anyone visiting Strasbourg. 🍷🥘😊

Very nice, cozy atmosphere. We had the French onion soup, the fish choucroute, and tarte flambée. Everything was good and the portions were generous. The service was a little slow, and it was sometimes hard to get the servers’ attention to order and to get the check, but they were friendly. Overall, a pleasant experience.

We had a very pleasant meal. The waiter was friendly and very helpful. The food was tasty and the portions were large. The inside of the restaurant is smaller but very pleasantly decorated with details that go well with the steyle of the historical building.

We came there and were instantly mesmerised by the atmosphere - really colorful, friendly stuff. Sadly, the food was disappointing for the price, except for the milkshakes. So, maybe it’s ok for dessert but not the main dish, and definitely not the fries.

The kids' play area is excellent. I don't think there's anywhere comparable in Strasbourg. The food is average though the price and portion size of the kid's menu is excellent. That being said, the price of the adult food and quantity don't match. Service was good. Atmosphere is fun.
Orly Heiblum★★★★☆
Great plan for kids! Food is pretty good (not THE best but actually good burger). Kids menu not expensive and good amount of food (tasy as well). They have a kids area to play. Very big place.

We went really late. Just 10mins before closing. Yassine was super kind to let us order and eat in. He was very entertaining and funny. We felt very welcomed! Place is very spacious and good ambience . Excellent food for people who like burgers etc.

Cute American style burgers and fries place in the mall. They have cocktails, wine, beer and milkshakes. Two of the servers were on rollerskates. 50s and 6ps music played. The burgers were pretty good and the fries were delicious. A fun little place if you are craving an American fix.

Absolutely lovely little restaurant. We have been there 3 times and it never failed. The Christmas beer is great, the pork knuckle with potatoes and sauerkraut, the beef stew with spetzle, red cabbage is our favourite, the vegetable stew was wonderful, the chicken and mushroom French pie was also stunning, and the creme brûlée and brownies were fabulous! Duck liver and the snails were a hit!! No complaints at all.
Patricia Shimoda★★★★★
I had a fantastic dining experience in Strasbourg. The pork knuckle was absolutely delicious—perfectly cooked with rich flavors and a satisfying texture. The onion soup was wonderful, warm and comforting with a deep, savory taste. The beef bourguignon was simply divine, tender and full of flavor. The service was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. On top of that, the 50% discount through The Fork really helped make the meal even better value for money.
Savanna Kate★★★☆☆
Service was good but maybe a little rushed. This is a very touristy area so they are used to English speakers eating quickly. Servers spoke multiple languages (French,Italian,English) if that’s a concern. Food portions are large and not too bad. I didn’t enjoy the knacks but the munstiflette was decent! Escargot came without shells and was mid tier.
Soju★★★☆☆
The service was great, good atmosphere, but i think the taste of the food and in that regard the price of the food could be improved. Portion size and look was good tho!

I was looking forward to this spot based on the google reviews and Italian cuisine in a city that is more about it’s meat and potatoes. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed on every dish my family had. It was just okay Italian at best. The server was nice and the setting was decent but the food just didn’t live up to what I would have expected. I would imagine there are a lot of better options out there.

Awesome winstub serving traditional and soulful Alsatian fare. Located in the shadow of the Cathedral, its famous "teddy bear" facade draws you in, but the kitchen provides a truly authentic reason to stay. The service is efficient and professional, even during the high-demand dinner rush. Skip the apple streusel!

Our first meal in Strasbourg did not disappoint. The May weather was kind enough to let us sit outside this charming restaurant on a pedestrianised street opposite the museum. It took a few minutes to receive our menus but when we did we were spoiled for choice. Our waiter helped us choose a pitcher of delicious Alsace wine and we both chose meals from the 'grandmother''s' side of the menu (pork knuckle for him, salmon for me). Delicious and generous, as was the final course of Munster cheese. Thank you for looking after us so well and for providing us with a meal.we will remember forever.
TVSU★★★★★
Main course was great, the Baeckeoffe. Had a small beer and glass of wine, and a blueberry tart, all for less than 50 EUR. The tart was mostly good, I just didnt cherish the fact that it was on display, uncovered, not so far from the door. The thought that many people must have walked past it and the door being opened next to it throughout the day is not something I cherish.
Norman Ruiz-Castañeda★★★☆☆
My family and I had lunch here after doing the Strasbourg river boat tour. This was near the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg, we should have know this was going to be a tourist trap. Food was mediocre at best. Servers did stop by frequently to check in but likely because we were seated in a hallway like section.
S R★★☆☆☆
Disappointing service and poorly presented food We booked a table in advance, but despite empty tables being available in the more comfortable upper dining rooms, we were seated at a tiny table right in a busy walkway by the door. As you can see from the photo, the table was so small it could barely accommodate two glasses and a bottle, making for a very cramped and uncomfortable experience. The food arrived quickly, but the presentation was a major letdown. We ordered the Choucroute, and it was served in a remarkably sloppy manner. The ingredients looked like they had been thrown onto the plate without any care or professional touch—certainly not what you expect at these prices. The service felt more like a motorway service station café than a proper restaurant. It lacked any sense of hospitality or attention to detail. Overall, a very mediocre experience in a city known for much better

This is a nice place to be in visually with its blue accents. It's not a big space, so probably better to book, especially on the weekend. The service was friendly & welcoming, but they did leave us for 15mins without asking about drinks. My beetroot tartare starter was something a bit different, but very enjoyable. My partner liked his poultry/pork pate. I had a main where cauliflower was the star. There were 3 vegetarian choices. My partner had the frog's legs. Small but tasty. He got vegetables with it, which were lovely. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience.

Fabulous little spot. Cozy in the evening. Phenomenal food, classics but done well. Can't go wrong with the frog legs, bone marrow and the pecan dessert (still dream about it time to time). Servers were attentive, friendly and welcoming. Never felt rushed.

We enjoyed our lunch and would definitely recommend La Hache. The bistro has a good vibe, the dining room is spacious with a high ceiling and appealing decor. The staff were helpful, polite and attentive. The food was overall good. My choice of sausage and mash was a bit underwhelming but the steak tartare and starters were good. I think pretty good value for money.

This is what food tastes like when it simply cannot be improved—because it is already perfect. I visited the restaurant on my first day for lunch, and the experience was so exceptional that I had to come back the very next day, this time for dinner. I tried pork cheeks with mashed potatoes, a chocolate cake with apricot sauce, a beef steak, and tiramisu. Every single dish was absolutely flawless. The meal was beautifully complemented by excellent Alsatian wines. The staff is attentive, welcoming, and highly professional. And what happens in the kitchen is nothing short of pure magic. My sincere thanks to the entire team at La Hache. I truly believe this was not my last visit to Strasbourg—or to this remarkable culinary gem.

We will definitely be back again!

Very nice restaurant in a busy tourist thoroughway just outside of the main drag. Waiter was excellent, dealing very professionally with a separate couple of bizarre tourists who sat down, then moved tables, before leaving. Bizarre. We both had the rösti as it was recommended, and honestly, did not disappoint. Drinks were good, Hugo spritz was well appreciated by my wife! Reasonable price for a tourist part of the city. Definitely worth a trip here for the rösti!

The waiter was multi lingual and spoke English very well. Fast service. The duck and crème brûlée were delicious. It was a great way to end the evening experience. My crème brûlée was a little dark on top but the flavor of the base was outstanding. I ordered the local pino noir. It was decent though I’m not really a big pino noir fan. I normally like cabs and Merlot. Also I didn’t have a reservation and they sat me immediately. For reference, I was rejected from multiple other restaurants tonight as I didn’t have a reservation for the night so this was a relief. Overall very nice experience and atmosphere.

We loved absolutely everything about this restaurant. The food was outstanding, especially the pork knuckle, which was so delicious that my father said he had not eaten one that good since his youth. The salads were fresh, beautiful, and full of flavor. The service was excellent as well. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Our dog was also treated wonderfully and received a tasty treat and fresh water, which we truly appreciated. Everything was perfect, and we will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

Went there in search of roesti, as not too many places in the city centre offer it. Tempted by high reviews we ended up in Le Thomasien. The food was acceptable, but nothing special. The overall atmosphere - annoying smell of the place, hot, crowded and super touristic. The service was very nice though. I would rate it higher, but I hate tourist traps and I felt like I got caught in one tonight.

Nice atmosphere and restaurant. Few options but all seem good. The food was good, although not great. We also had the dessert which was very good.

Small but charming bistro with modern interior located in the heart of Strasbourg. They offer innovative French & Italian tapas and a nice selection of creative tartes flambées, the regional speciality. All the sharing dishes we had were truly delicious and the staff was also very friendly. We had a delightful dining experience!

A tiny restaurant, but a truly big experience. Le croustillant d’agneau (crispy lamb) was absolutely outstanding, paired with delicious traditional spätzle. I had hoped to come back again, but there were no tables available on Friday evening. Make sure to book in advance!

Exceptional. The vegetarian flammeukeuch with cheese (which I unfortunately didn't take a picture of but I promise it would have convinced you if I had, just take my word for it) was delicious with a generous amount of vegetables. We also had sweet potatoe fries and spaetzle and both were great! It was nice to be able to share food, my daughters loved the concept! To top it off the service was very friendly! If we are ever in Strasbourg again, we will definitely come back 🙂

Staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was absolutely incredible! We shared 3 sharing plates between 3 of us and had 2 sides. The crisy lamb was our favourite but all dishes were delicious!

This place is a very cozy restaurant with a very friendly staff team. They can speak English, so don't hesitate to speak to them. I also really like it that they offered reservations through Google, which made everything so much easier. Especially since I am pretty introverted and not tp fond of making phone calls. They only have the menu in French, but it has a simple design, so you will not have a hard time understanding it as long as you have your phone to use your translator or you can also ask the friendlt staff. I recommend coming here during weekdays, since then they offer a course menu for a very fair price of 18 Euros(Appetizer, Main, Dessert). You can also remove the Dessert to have a cheaper meal. You can assemble your course menu from a small variety off different dishes (2-3 options). They also offer one vegan option. The special thing about this restaurant is that the food options change from time to time, so every visit will bring you a unique experience. You don't need to buy seperate drinks and just need to ask for water, which is served for free. If you ask for bread (like I did) you also get that for free. All in all a delicious restaurant with very friendly staff and a changing menu, which makes every visit a unique experience. I definetely recommend visiting this place during weekdays to order a course menu.

Tips for Dining Out with Kids in Strasbourg

While the restaurants listed above are incredibly welcoming, a little local knowledge can turn a good meal into a great one. Dining culture in France has specific rhythms, and understanding them will help you avoid long waits and hungry meltdowns. Here are some essential strategies for navigating the Strasbourg food scene with your family.

First, adjust your meal times to the local clock. Restaurants in Strasbourg typically open for lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and for dinner from 7:00 PM onwards. Arriving at 6:00 PM will likely leave you standing outside a closed door. If your children are used to eating earlier, aim for a hearty late lunch as your main meal and opt for a lighter snack or bakery pastry in the evening, or target the few venues that offer continuous service.

Second, do not be afraid to ask for a "carafe d’eau." Tap water is safe to drink and restaurants are legally required to provide it for free. Asking for a pitcher of water saves money and keeps everyone hydrated without having to order multiple bottles of expensive sparkling water. It is a standard request, and no server will think twice about it.

Third, embrace the tarte flambée. As mentioned, this is the region’s answer to pizza, but with a thinner crust and a crème fraîche base. It is usually served unsliced on a wooden board, which makes it fun for kids to cut into pieces themselves. You can often order a "nature" version for picky eaters and a "gratinée" or "forestière" version for the adults to share.

Fourth, look for the "menu enfant" but be prepared for the classics. While the quality is usually high, children’s menus in traditional Alsatian restaurants can sometimes be limited to breaded chicken or pasta. If your child is a more adventurous eater, consider ordering a half portion of an adult starter or sharing your main course, as portions in Alsace are notoriously generous.

Finally, pack a small "restaurant kit" for younger children. While the French are tolerant of children in restaurants, they expect parents to manage the noise level. Bringing a small coloring book, a few crayons, or a quiet toy can bridge the gap between ordering and the food arriving, which can sometimes take a little longer in traditional kitchens.

Exploring the culinary side of Strasbourg with your family is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the city’s unique culture. By choosing the right venues and adapting slightly to the local pace, you can create lasting memories centered around shared plates and new flavors. The warmth of an Alsatian winstub is not just about the wood-paneled walls; it is about the joy of gathering, and there is no better way to experience that than with the whole family at the table.
