Lyon sits at the crossroads of Europe, where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet and centuries of silk-weaving, gastronomy, and cinema history have shaped a city that feels both grand and deeply livable. It is the kind of destination that rewards slow wandering through hidden traboules, long lunches in bouchons, and evenings spent watching the city glow from Fourvière Hill.
But for many travelers, the practical challenge is finding a comfortable place to sleep without spending the equivalent of a fine-dining dinner on a single night. The good news is that Lyon’s hotel scene is far more accessible than its reputation as a culinary capital might suggest.
From family-run one-star addresses in the Presqu’île to modern budget chains near Part-Dieu station, the city offers a surprisingly wide range of affordable options. You do not have to sacrifice cleanliness, location, or local character to keep your nightly rate low. The key is knowing which neighborhoods and hotel styles deliver the best value for your particular travel style.
Budget in Lyon does not mean a sterile box on the edge of town. Some of the cheapest beds are in beautifully converted historic buildings, steps from Vieux Lyon’s Renaissance courtyards or the buzzing Croix-Rousse market. Others are no-frills but spotless, run by hosts who will happily draw you a map to their favorite boulangerie.
The trick is to match your priorities, whether that is being able to walk everywhere, having easy tram access to Eurexpo, or simply needing a quiet room after a day of wine tasting. This guide focuses on hotels that consistently deliver clean, safe, and well-located stays at prices that leave room in your budget for the things Lyon does best.
You will find options across the city’s most practical districts, from the tourist-friendly heart of the peninsula to the calmer, more residential areas near metro lines. Each recommendation balances nightly rates with real guest feedback on comfort, service, and value.
We have also considered what “cheap” means in a major French city. While Lyon is not as expensive as Paris or Nice, rates still rise during festival periods like the Fête des Lumières in December and major trade fairs. The hotels below are selected because they maintain reasonable base prices year-round, though booking a few weeks ahead always helps. A low rate is only a good deal if you actually enjoy your stay.
Below, you will find a curated list of the best cheap hotels in Lyon, followed by practical tips to help you choose the right one and save even more on your booking. Whether you are visiting for a weekend of sightseeing, a business trip, or a stopover on a longer French journey, there is an affordable, welcoming bed with your name on it.

We needed a hotel for one night as we passed through Lyon on route north. This hotel was perfect as the location allowed us to leave our car safe in the car park and take the metro into the centre to explore the city. Room was clean and comfortable. Quiet during the night. Breakfast was ok but would have liked a croissant being in France. All in all perfect stay.

The aircon was broken which kinda sucked but you get what you pay for and it’s a good place to stop on a journey. Loueye was very helpful in the morning

Told not to take photos. Which would be understandable i guess if not for the fact we where trying to translate.
The house rules state no storage of bags at all after or before checkout. which is super inconvenient for travellers.
The room was ok but the communal toilets where always wet and dirty. and the showers had what appeared to be black mold.
Was unwelcoming except for the guy who was at the front desk in the morning.
All in all wouldn’t come back but is ok if your willing to be in a bit of a dodgy area and not so clean bathrooms.

For the price this was a very nice hotel. We didn't buy the breakfast because at our hostel in Switzerland it wasn't worth the expense charge. I wish we had bought breakfast here! It looked delicious and there were lots of options, even gluten free options if requested!! Rooms were spacious and the staff were very helpful. Only downside were the mattresses were quite hard. It was easy to get to the transit from the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel!

I booked one night in a 4-bed dorm room. Overall, the experience was good. The place was clean, the staff were friendly, and the breakfast was satisfying. The hostel has a really nice vibe, with the building and rooms painted in bright colors that create a welcoming atmosphere.
One thing I really appreciated was that the room had air conditioning. I visited France during a heatwave, so having A/C made a huge difference and made the stay much more comfortable.

By far the best hotel I’ve stayed at in France. Everything was spotless and very well maintained, and the room was comfortable, modern, and had everything I needed for my stay.
The location is excellent, with easy access to public transport and many attractions nearby, making it very convenient to explore the city. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with any questions.
The breakfast was amazing, with a great variety of fresh options every morning. It was one of the highlights of my stay and a perfect way to start the day.
I also appreciated the overall atmosphere of the hotel, it felt safe, organized, and well run. The common areas were clean and inviting, and the facilities were excellent.
Overall, I had a fantastic experience and would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area! 😊

Very affordable accommodation in a great location, only about a 30-minute walk from Lyon’s Old Town. Everything is clean, tidy and well maintained. The rooms are very spacious, the breakfast is good, and all the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming.
A special mention goes to Muhamed from Senegal, who will definitely stay in our memory for his kindness and great sense of humor. He helped me in the underground parking garage, which is quite narrow and tricky to navigate 😂 He was so kind and helpful!
Overall, a very pleasant stay and a great value for money.

Full air conditioning! No joke, no twist. This hotel has everything you need to have a pleasant stay in Lyon. Breakfast was good and plentiful, the rooms are simple but comfortable, and the shower pressure was outstanding. The location makes it ideal to visit all of southeastern France, and even Switzerland which is just 2 hours away. As if this weren’t enough, the staff is very friendly and speak multiple languages. And, did I mention the air conditioning is no joke!

We had a reservation at this hotel, but due to the war in the Middle East, our airline canceled our tickets. This was clearly a force majeure situation, completely outside our control. Despite this, the hotel refused to refund our money.
We are extremely disappointed by the lack of understanding, flexibility, and basic customer care during such a serious and exceptional circumstance. In times like these, businesses should show fairness and humanity, not hide behind rigid policies.
Very poor experience, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

This is a capitalist facility, you can't talk to anyone, especially in other languages then French. But it's a non stop business, so you can book and check in at late hours. The breakfast is a "petit" one.

Well situated, the room was ok, but the hotel as a whole needs refurbishment. Also a lot of noise from the street unfortunately.

This is just a informative review for anyone travelling to this hotel from outside of France. As of March 2025, France is requiring stickers for cars that declare their emissions in order for them to enter certain zones. This hotel is located in a low emission zone in Lyon. Because of how the French system is set up, you have to know your exact car and license plate before you can get your sticker. I rented a car in Italy the day before my scheduled stay in Lyon, and when I went online to purchase a sticker for the rental car, I was informed that the sticker cannot be digital, it has to be physically attached to your car, and it takes a week to ship. So I could not get a sticker in time and could not attend my stay at this hotel. So be sure before you book and plan to drive to the hotel that you either rent a French car, or have your rental for longer than a week in order to get the necessary sticker.

First time for us in France (Feb-March)
We found the hotel excellent value for money and the location was good with plenty of quality restaraunts nearby.
On arrival we were warmley greeted by Paul the hotel manager in the reception. He was welcoming, polite, proffesional and very helpful throughout our short stay.
The room was fantastic, clean, bright and large.
Thank you Paul for an excellent stay.....

We encountered a very rude hotel employee. Despite having availability listed online, we were turned away at the door. The employee turned off the lobby lights, said there were no rooms available, and sent us away. We had traveled half an hour to reach this hotel.

If I can give this hotel a minus something I would with not hesitation. This is by far the worst ever experience with hotels. We arrived to the hotel for the check in to find the guy at the reception asking us to leave the lobby because he wants to have a break, can you imagine! When I told him why so, and how come we cannot get our room, he said these are the rules of the hotel you cannot check in at anytime and I cannot stay in the lobby untill it is time to check in !!!!!!!!!!! When I argued with the guy he became rude and insisted we leave. We stayed outside with no place to go to for two hours till he allowed us to check in. The room was full of dust, not enough towels for two, water so very cold and we could not take shower. Not recommended at all.

I booked via our hotel via third party and was told that a service dog was not considered a pet and there would be no additional charges. I had no problem paying $11 EU a day for parking although I thought it was expensive. The hotel is in the central area of Lyon and I thought we would be close to everything. Not the case, it is located far from everything that you want to see and do while you are in Lyon, the only good thing was they are close to the Brassier L'Ouest. We found the manager rude and condescending when it came to the service animal and did not understand French Law imposed in 2005. For a hotel that allows pets there was no room cleaning if the service dog was in the room. During our 5 day stay the room was only cleaned once and sheets never changed and garbage not emptied. I cannot recommend this establishment due to management style and not understanding French law when it comes to those who require additional assistance and medical awareness and issues that a service animal provides. All I can say is SHAME that our service dog can fly business class around the world free of charge but not at your 3 star establishment.

Scam, they stole $200 from me and never returned! The rooms are very dirty! When I came to the room I found someone else living there and everything messed up! They even didn't refund my money! And yes, literally everyone can have free access to your room because they leave the keys on the street.

Nice staff, good location for public transportation, quality bed, adequate breakfast. But, I have never seen a bathroom that small before (really uncomfortable), and there were bad smells accasionally. We stayed for 3 nights. Since there was no air conditioning, we had to open the window, and every morning we had to wake up around 6-7 am due to noise from outside for various reasons (garbage trucks, people fighting or having funon the streets).

Good location (Perrache Tram & Metro), kind and friendly staff, rich breakfast. It was lovely that the hotel was in a quiet area and the beds were comfortable. Cleaning is done everyday. Since the room features are already disclosed, I won't say this exists or that does not. I can only say that the bathroom unit should have been a bit larger.
I highly recommend this good p/q ratio hotel.

I’m ashamed this is even called an hotel with 3 stars. By far, the worst hotel I know.
Room is not cleaned properly. The floor has white splashed marks. The sink accumulates water and whatever is inside of it!
Breakfast is not fresh and complete garbage.
Service is opened few some hours only. If you need help at night, call a number?!?!
Know what? The fire alarm set off in the middle of a night and is impossible to sleep.
The room is cold and windows are not properly covering.
Everything in this hotel is falling apart. I truly hope no one comes here

This hotel is located in an area that is not the safest with a difficult to access main entrance and parking garage on a STEEP hill that is hard to maneuver in and out of. The accommodation itself is good 3.5 stars. I lowered the overall rating because the hallways are dark and dingy, and it doesn't feel particularly safe moving around inside the hotel itself. The other guests left trash in the halls despite a written notice from the staff, who kept the doors to the breakfast room practically locked and didn't like having to add it to your bill if you didn't reserve, and there was broken glass and a container filled with cigarette butts on the balcony of my room, which made it impossible for my kids to play out there.

No toilet paper in the room when we arrived, the curtains were broken and were hanging off. All in all not very clean for the price we paid and how far it is from the centre.

Great hotel. Perfect location. Awful welcome and completely disinterested unhelpful staff, who saw no need whatsoever to smile at us, or to apologise that our Plus Room wasn’t ready at the advertised time. They could have been much kinder and offered to take our bags, given us a free coffee - given that our Plus Room advertised with coffee wasn’t ready from 2pm..so no coffee available either. I would stay here again as the location is great and the parking is secure. But I suggest customer service training for the staff as they are surly and bad for the brand.

We stayed here last minute and didn’t expect too much given that it was quite a budget hotel, but we did expect cleanliness. Unfortunately when we were about to give our son a shower, we noticed dirty underwear slung over the top of the shower from the previous guest. Not ideal. Reception were not interested when we informed them, and said there were no rooms to change to. Hotel is run down, communal areas are filthy, air con is not effective and the room was very tatty. The location is good if you need to go to the Gare Part Dieu, but I would not recommend this hotel at all.

Nothing fancy but fine for a quick night between two trains. All the other comments are valid (room is small, mold smell near reception, not very efficient staff), but all in all, for 65 eur a night, this is what I was looking for, the room was rather modern (water-efficient shower is crap) and it’s a 5 min walk to/from the train station. AC in the room was working fine (not at reception) but note that the kitchen of the restaurant advertised by the hotel closes at 9:30 pm (despite the 24/24 advertised everywhere). Would likely come back

Wouldn’t recommend this place whatsoever. Upon arrival the lobby smelled an unpleasant odor. The rooms were not cleaned and if they were, it was done with no attempt to actually have the purpose be to have a clean room. There was some type of stains on the walls in the room. The bathroom kept reeking of a smell of sewers. The toilet seat had a pee stain on it. The bed sheets and blankets had stains and hair on them. There was a wrapper shoved in the crevice of the top bunk. There was also chewed gum on the bottom of the top bunk bed. There was a light right above the bed that flickered anytime it was turned on. I had no room the put my belongings in the room whatsoever due to the false advertising for the photos of booking. I expressed my complaints to the staff and no attempt to make up for my lack of satisfaction was made. One of the female workers at the front desk was also very rude and full on ignored me when I needed some help. I am unhappy with my stay and wish I would’ve known this would’ve been my experience before hand. If you have any other option to stay somewhere else, I highly recommend you do so.
MC Reviews★★★★☆
My experience (2 people, double-bed room on the 5th floor, with breakfast, during the low season – January 2026) is very different from the reviews posted here.
I’d like to start by highlighting the excellent value for money! Very central location (10 minutes on foot from Part-Dieu station), 24-hour reception, air conditioning working very well, room with the necessary space (note: we were traveling with just one backpack each), window with very good sound insulation from outside noise, very comfortable bed, good room and bathroom cleanliness. Although the shower is eco-friendly, it had enough pressure for a proper shower. There was a shower gel dispenser in the shower, which even smelled nice. Another positive point was the free water machine (including sparkling water).
The breakfast buffet was very good, with a wide variety of options and quality products.
Less positive points (but I would stay here again!): little sound insulation between rooms (and yes, you can hear the train a bit — but believe me, the difference with or without the window closed is huge, and our room faced the back); they could provide one more small towel (for hands or to place on the floor after the shower); one of the elevators was out of order, so it sometimes took a long time (and it was often better to take the stairs); breakfast is served in the building right next door, so you have to go outside and face the cold and/or rain to get there.

Hotel was convenient for a stop over on our way to Spain. The check-in online and direct to room was easy and worked well for us because we arrived late. We had a mezzanine room which was nice for our family of 4. The loft got a little warm, but was ok. We paid for a spot in the garage, but the gate was wide open when we arrived, but it was well lit and seemed safe. Friendly staff who spoke English:) There was some light noise from the highway, but overall was a very quiet night for us. We would definitely stay again if in the area. Thanks!

One issue I think B&B should really change: why the hell is the code pad for accessing the garage on the right side wall, forcing the driver to step out of the vehicle to insert the code and, then, coming back to step into the vehicle to access the garage? Has it been foreseen specifically for UK tourists? I'm sorry but it makes no sense.

The hotel is very dirty. dust stains everywhere. the toilet was so dirty and in urine divorces that I had to wash myself. the sink does not let water through, that is, when you brush your teeth, dirty water rises to the edges and does not leave. accordingly, the water head flows into the shower crane very weak. men's hair and hair were lying all over the room. stank so I had to sleep with the window open despite a chilly evening. There were goats on the towels and some lumps of dirt. The hotel is disgusting! I do not advise anyone

Was a great place for a short staying on business. Accommodations were good. Lacks a small fridge so you could keep a couple drinks in the hotel. Bed was big enough but mattress was a bit hard. We (two F 19) stayed there for two nights in a 16 person mixed dorm and it was absolutely worth it.
The dorm had a lot of privacy even with 16 people in it. The bunks were closed of with privacy curtains and honestly very soundproof. The bathroom was also really great with closed off stalls and much space. The employees were so sweet, and the overall vibe in the common area was really chill and welcoming. We wish we had more time, would definitely recommend to everyone!!!

For the price and location I don't think it's possible to beat. One has to remember it is a hostel. I stayed for a while and had no security problems. All of the staff were great from the front desk to the cleaning staff. The location is great with a great courtyard and Pétanque pit. The food is good and breakfast is available early for those on the go; also there is a min-mart that is open from 7-11 daily for basic needs. On the weekend there is an excellent Market along the main boulevard on top of the hill(A must).
One tip: If you store food in the fridge, keep it in a compact bag and use the labels provided to seal your bag while properly labeling it. All and all it's a great place.
Daniel Costa★☆☆☆☆
The location is on top of a hill. I personally did not mind the walk, but guests with accessibility needs or mobility limitations may find it challenging.
Out of the dozens of hostels I have stayed in throughout my life, this was by far the most structured and professionally organised. The hostel appears to operate as part of a larger network with multiple locations, giving it a franchise-like feel.
Ironically, however, I may have had one of my worst hostel experiences here. The dormitory where I stayed was almost impossible to sleep in. There was no air conditioning, and France was experiencing temperatures between 37°C and 40°C during my stay. In the 18-bed dormitory, the heat was unbearable, and the smell in the room was extremely unpleasant. For three consecutive nights, I found myself constantly turning from side to side, drenched in sweat and unable to sleep properly.
Food theft was also an issue. Wine, bread, cheese, and juice disappeared from the communal refrigerator. Installing a camera in the kitchen or implementing additional security measures could help prevent this.
Another problem was a guest who spent most of the day drinking in the common area while playing music at full volume without headphones. This made it difficult for others to relax, read, work, or enjoy the shared space.
The bathroom facilities also needed attention. During the heatwave, I took three showers a day over four days, and not once did I find soap available in the bathrooms. On my final full day, there was no toilet paper available either, forcing me to use the shared restroom in the hostel lounge instead.
On a positive note, the staff were consistently kind, helpful, and professional. They provided clear information about transportation, including how to get to the airport, and were always willing to assist with general questions. Their friendliness was one of the highlights of my stay.

Very nice hostel in Lyon. I liked the area even if it is a bit far from the city centre. The staff were very nice and the room was good too. I wish that the ceiling height would be a bit higher in the top bunk because it was almost impossible to enter and sit comfortably in it. The cleanliness was good too. I liked that the bathrooms were close.

I am going with a BIG one star for this place, I booked through Agoda (I am a top tier Agoda Member) and came in at around 6.30. My booking clearly stated private room shared bathroom but the very best they could offer was a female only dorm bed. One problem, I am a MAN...
Well I take Fake listing's very seriously and People Hostel refused to offer a refund when contacted by Agoda (I did make two separate bookings) People Hostel refused refund for both.
So what I did is got Agoda to refund the two bookings and as a result People Hostel not only lost the bookings but also received a Negative Review.

Don’t park here if you don’t want to be robbed — or better yet, don’t stay at this hotel at all!
Not only by thieves, but also by the hotel itself. It was like a joke!
When we checked in, we paid and were given an indoor parking space. Before going out, we asked the woman at the reception whether our parking space would still be available if we came back late, and she said yes.
However, when we returned at midnight, the bald guy at the reception did not allow us to park in the indoor garage. We then parked on the street (a free parking spot). After that, he showed us another parking lot (It was an outdoor parking lot as well) belonging to the hotel. We asked him if it was okay to park where we had already parked, and he said it was okay! (Like he didn’t know the situation or maybe he knows the thieves — we don’t know.)
So we parked there, and when we asked for our parking fee back, he said they would not refund it. In the end, we paid 8€ for parking, had to park outside, and lost belongings worth 3,500€. And our entire vacation was ruined.
He did not informed us, so we are WARNING you: do not park on this street — or better yet, do not stay at this hotel at all!
—————————
The parking spot you suggested to us was also an open-air area, and when we arrived, its gate was still open. Therefore, we assumed it made no difference whether we parked there or on the street.
Your hotel’s camera partially covers the area where we parked. Your receptionist was even watching the street when I arrived! Due to your laws, we were not allowed to access the camera recordings unfortunately!
Even a man from the street who came to us after seeing that we had been robbed knew that the area was dangerous and that such incidents happen frequently. Yet your receptionist did not warn us about this at all — on the contrary, he confirmed that it was okay for us to park there.
And after we were robbed — because of your negligence — you only offered to refund our money. Thanks to your professionalism!

I was happy with my one night stay there. It seemed the best option for the southern part of the city. The room was well decorated and large enough. The bed was super comfortable, and I had a very good sleep. I did not hear any disturbing noise. The room was clean. The only problem with the room is that the bathroom and toilet were not comfortable enough if you would like to stay more. The toilet is directly facing the wall.
They could improve the toiletries. Also, when I asked for slippers to use after shower, which I was provided with at all other hotels, the staff was quite surprised.
The breakfast was very good. I wish they provided explanations in English. Also, the selection was a bit limited for vegans and vegetarians. As an example, I could not see any plant based milk. I hesitated to ask due to the language barrier we experienced earlier.
There is a fountain at the entrance. So, I recommend bringing your own bottle.
The restaurant was nice, although the selection is limited (especially for vegans/vegetarians).

Our room did not have a functioning shower no way to call the reception no number given even though there was a phone. Rooms were fine.

This hotel is rated 4-star probably largely for its internal restaurant and bar. I was not told there was a spa area during my stay. The reception area seems quite recently refreshed but that's where it acceptable standard ends. Inexperienced staff on reception, absolutely terrible damaged and filthy carpets on the stairs and on room floors. Rooms were dark, poor lighting, kitchenette lacked glass wear or plates, bathroom had peeling paint, and damaged shower head meant difficult to shower. My room looked down on the restaurant area. Price was over A$200 per night for conditions you would expect in an out of the way backpackers hostel. Seriously Avoid.

AC didn’t work properly but other than that it was fine.

Mixed feelings
Pros:
- Nice staff
- Breakfast was good
- Spacious studios
- Location is OK (but there are better located hotels in the center of Lyon)
Cons:
- Most of the rooms are in a REALLY bad SHAPE (see pictures) and some are very poorly located (writing this review from a room in which the bed is litterally aside the elevator).
- It is nice to give some fancy shower gel and shampoo but an improvement would be to have some soap for the hands. In an appart hotel it feels like the bare minimum.
- The rooms could be cleaner.
Conclusion : very expensive for the quality of the rooms, it is okay to spend a few nights here but try to find some other place to stay if you can.

It was not the best experience.
The room was booked for two persons and there was only one towel, that's why I decided to use my own one. The next day the staff have taken my towel thinking that it was the one provided by the hotel. When I informed about this to reception, they did not even apologise like it is a normal thing. Every morning we woke up to the chair noise coming from the hotel lobby/hall.
My colleague had an even worse experience with a cold room and not correct registration of the room type.

The hotel is in a decent location, close to the subway, and parking is available for an extra fee.
We stayed here in May, and the AC wasn’t working in our room (or in most of the hotel), leaving it over 30°C throughout our entire stay. To make matters worse, the room was poorly maintained—the showerhead was broken, and the bathroom was heavily showing its age, complete with visible mold.
The front desk staff were completely unhelpful and didn't even have a fan to offer us. There is also no way to contact them by phone unless you call a premium, paid number that charges an extra fee.
Lyon had already been experiencing a heatwave for a couple of days before we arrived, so I don't see how this was unexpected. Has the hotel seriously not had working AC for a week?

Arrived 40 minutes before check-in. We had an important appointment to attend and sure yes we could check into a room but paying a supplement. That's a shame wasn't about the money just about no understanding just policy. Aside from that room was lovely. Location also

is by far the worst hotel you could ever stay in. The room felt like hell — extremely hot, and the air conditioning didn’t work at all, even though the room description clearly said it was included.
When I asked the reception, they told me they would change my room, but later they claimed there were no rooms available — which is a lie, because I checked on Booking and found rooms available for the same night.
Then they contacted the manager, whose response was simply ridiculous and frustrating. He said the temperature would drop at night and that I could just open the window to cool down.
This hotel doesn’t even deserve one star. Absolutely unacceptable.
Stephen Price★★★☆☆
Clean, modern, and very basic.
The pros: comfortable beds, helpful staff, 1m walk to the metro.
The cons: no way to keep thing cold or heat water in your room. A/C was not operating, so the room was >25C. The window opens, but it meant you could have a quiet room or a room at a comfortable temperature but not both.
YOEL TRAVEL (סוכן נסיעות)★★★★☆
The hotel is good and very centrally located, and the service is excellent. However, the room cleanliness needs improvement.
I would have liked the room to be better equipped, for example with a small wardrobe or at least some drawers, and a small refrigerator for storing cold items. There is not even a large shared refrigerator for guests’ use, which makes it inconvenient if you want to keep food or drinks refrigerated.
Tips for Booking Cheap Hotels in Lyon
Choosing the right budget hotel involves more than sorting by the lowest price. Lyon’s neighborhoods are distinct, and a cheap room in one district may cost you more in time or transport than a slightly pricier one in a more central location. These tips will help you balance cost, comfort, and convenience so you get genuine value rather than just a low headline rate.
1. Stay near a metro line rather than a tourist attraction
Hotels directly on Place Bellecour or in Vieux Lyon charge a premium for the address. Instead, look for budget options in the 3rd, 7th, or 8th arrondissements within a five-minute walk of metro lines A, B, or D. You will often save 20 to 40 euros per night while remaining ten minutes from the center by public transport.
2. Avoid festival and trade fair dates if possible
The Fête des Lumières in early December, the Nuits Sonores music festival, and major events at Eurexpo or the Cité Internationale can double or triple budget hotel rates. If your dates are flexible, check Lyon’s event calendar before booking. If not, book as early as you can and consider hotels slightly outside the immediate event zone.
3. Look for breakfast-included deals or skip hotel breakfast entirely
Many cheap Lyon hotels charge 8 to 12 euros per person for a basic continental breakfast. That is often more than you would pay at a neighborhood café or boulangerie, where a coffee and croissant may cost half as much and taste better. Compare rates with and without breakfast before booking.
4. Use the city’s excellent bike-share and tram network
Lyon’s Vélo’v bike-share system and extensive tram network make it easy to stay in quieter, cheaper residential areas without feeling isolated. A hotel near a tram stop in Villeurbanne or the 8th arrondissement can be significantly cheaper than one in the Presqu’île, and you will still reach major sights in under twenty minutes.
5. Book directly with the hotel for the best flexible rates
While third-party booking sites are useful for comparing prices, many small Lyon hotels offer a lower rate or free cancellation when you book directly by phone or through their own website. This is especially true for independent one-star and two-star hotels that want to avoid high commission fees.
6. Check for weekly or multi-night discounts
Several budget hotels in Lyon, particularly aparthotels and family-run addresses, offer reduced nightly rates for stays of three nights or more. If you are staying for several days, always compare the total price for your full stay rather than looking only at the single-night rate.
Lyon rewards travelers who plan with a little local knowledge. A well-chosen cheap hotel in the right neighborhood gives you more than a place to sleep. It puts you closer to the morning markets, the riverside paths, and the small cafés where real Lyonnais life happens, all without stretching your budget.
With the money you save on lodging, you can linger longer over a proper bouchon lunch, take the funicular up to Fourvière without a second thought, or simply enjoy another glass of Côtes du Rhône as the city lights reflect on the Saône. In a city built on the art of good living, sleeping well for less is the first step to experiencing it fully.
