From the historic cobblestones of Vieux Lyon to the chic boulevards of the Presqu’île, France’s gastronomic capital offers a retail landscape as diverse as its culinary scene. Shopping in Lyon is not just a transaction; it is an exploration of French art de vivre, where centuries-old silk workshops sit beside avant-garde concept stores.
Whether you are hunting for high-end fashion, vintage treasures, or edible souvenirs to take home, the city provides a distinct mix of independent boutiques and grand commercial centers. Navigating the city’s retail districts can be overwhelming for first-time visitors, as the best shops are often hidden within the traboules (secret passageways) or tucked away on side streets.
This guide is curated to help you distinguish the truly exceptional shopping destinations from the generic tourist traps. We have focused on locations that offer high-quality products, unique local character, and an authentic Lyonnais experience rather than simply listing the largest malls.
For the luxury shopper, Lyon rivals Paris in terms of selection but offers a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The city is historically the capital of silk, and this heritage is reflected in the availability of high-end textiles and accessories that you simply cannot find elsewhere. Conversely, the rise of young designers and vintage curators in areas like Croix-Rousse has injected a vibrant, bohemian energy into the local economy.
Food lovers will find that shopping here is an essential part of understanding the local culture. The covered markets and specialty food halls are not just places to buy ingredients; they are social institutions where locals gather to debate the quality of the day’s produce. Bringing home a taste of Lyon requires knowing which purveyors offer authentic regional products like rosette de Lyon, quenelles, or locally produced pralines.
This article focuses on the best shopping spots that offer a high density of quality retailers within walkable areas. By organizing your trip around these hubs, you can maximize your time and minimize unnecessary travel. We have also considered the aesthetic and historical value of the shopping environments themselves, ensuring that even window shopping becomes a memorable part of your travel itinerary.
Below, we have compiled the definitive list of the most rewarding places to spend your money in Lyon, from grand department stores to artisan workshops.

One of the largest shopping centers in Europe.
You can find just about anything here, whether it’s food or shopping.
The restrooms are paid unless you’re enrolled in the loyalty program, but I found them to be very clean.
Overall, it’s a beautiful mall. It does get quite busy on weekends, which is to be expected.
It’s best to come early in the day.

Super large shopping center, I was here at Christmas holidays, it was quite crowded, couldn’t enjoy a lot. What I liked, it just on front of station, and at Sunday mostly cafes were open, we could have a nice lunch before leaving and after we just arrived. It’s John reed sports, and a lot of stores.

It's definitely my favorite Westfield Mall. Especially enjoyed the restaurant floor (top floor).

Great Mall and location but come on mall owners REALLY.. you have to Charge to use the bathroom...and where do you buy the tickets..I ended up going back to the hotel. This is really a joke and stupidity... aren't you already making enough with the rentals.

It has three levels of shopping Centre, and lots of space to sit down and relax with PowerPoint for you to charge your phone, I have never seen a shopping centre welcome people to sit down and rest, I like the natural lighting of the shopping centre, it is very relaxing. I especially like the carrfore supermarket, it has a pizzeria on the upper level where you can order your pizza and then make it straight away for you.

Passage de l’Argue is a covered arcade, but its line is older than its glass roof. It follows an earlier allée once associated with precious-metal wire-drawing, before the surrounding buildings were bought, demolished and rebuilt in the 1820s as a commercial passage. The new arcade turned a working route into a narrow strip of shopfronts, mezzanine bays and glass-lit display, making walking and looking part of the same movement. Its history did not stop there. In 1862-63, rue de l’Impératrice cut through the passage, creating new entrances and breaking the original continuity. The polygonal glass dome still marks the former centre of a route first remade for trade, then divided and redirected by the city around it.

The Passage de l'Argue (French pronunciation: [pasaʒ də laʁɡ]) is a covered arcade in the Bellecour quarter, in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, which connects the Rue de la République to the Rue Édouard-Herriot and the Rue de Brest.[1] It is continued across the Rue de Brest by the Petit Passage de l'Argue [fr], which was part of the main passage until the road was constructed. The Passage de l'Argue is one of the oldest arcades in the French provinces, built at the same period and on the same model as Parisian arcades.[2] Home to many luxury retailers, it plays a significant role in the trade of the Presqu'île.[3]

The Passage de l’Argue, often referred to as the Silver Arcade of Lyon, is a historic covered passageway located in the Bellecour quarter of Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement. Constructed between 1825 and 1828, it stands as one of the oldest arcades in France outside Paris, inspired by the elegant Parisian passages of the 19th century.

The shopping center has a good variety of stores and restaurants, but the overall experience was disappointing. It was extremely hot inside, and the large glass rooftop turns the mall into a greenhouse on sunny days. The air conditioning doesn't exist to keep visitors comfortable. Walking around became unpleasant because of the heat. Better climate control would make a huge difference and greatly improve the shopping experience.

We went there to have lunch with our kids in Hanoi Ca Phe before heading to the Musées des Confluence Museum which is a lovely 15min walk from this mall if you walk by the river in the La Confluence campus.
The malls is nice and airy. I appreciate the way it was designed. But of course, we do not compare it to the malls in Asia. This is good for a Euroean mall.
The toilets were right beside the parking. Very big, convenient and clean.
They also have free drinking fountains.
PARKING
I am removing one star because parking is expensive. Let me explain. There is a lot of parking. We had to drive to almost the top to find a spot but there was still a lot. We went on a weekday when it was our kids ski holidays in Switzerland so it wasn't crowded at all. The parking is free for the first couple of hours, however it becomes really expensive. We should have moved our car to Parking LPA - Musée des Confluences Gerland which is only 7,70 Euros per day. After we had lunch and walked to and from the Museum our parking was almost 19 Euros. Very expensive especially for France.

We went to Confluence Mall a number of times during our two-week stay in Lyon. There are quite a few stores, and the mall itself is clean, vibrant, and well lit. It's also really neat how part of it spans over the train tracks, with a section that's open to the outdoors.
We ate at a couple of restaurants here and also saw the movie "The Odyssey" during our visit in summer 2026. They also have a very large grocery store, which made it easy to pick up food so we weren't constantly eating at restaurants.
It's definitely worth a visit. The whole area feels very modern. There's also a well-equipped gym, which I believe is a Planet Fitness, and the surrounding neighborhood seems to be undergoing a lot of development, with many newer buildings going up.

Bought 3 earrings from them, all broke in less than a year, and they didn't do anything about it. Even though it is very expensive and advertised as high craftsmanship, all items deteriorated and broke in less than a year. You can see residues of glue on the long ones, and how it just slipped out of the hanger on the small one. I have contacted customer service online and in person, they did not help me and told me that even though the pieces are described as guaranteed for 3 years, they are actually not. No refund, no repair, no discount, no exchange, nothing. They declined any kind of responsibility even though they are retailers of Pdpaola. Very disapointing.

Place Bellecour is a great spot in the center of Lyon. It’s a beautiful square and a very convenient place to walk through, relax, or attend events. I was there during a French national holiday, and there was plenty of space, with benches and a very well-organized setup.
It’s also one of those places that feels both lively and open at the same time, which makes it especially enjoyable. A very nice place in the heart of the city.
Hashem Molavi★★★★☆
Place Bellecour is one of the largest open squares in Europe and a central landmark in Lyon. Its expansive layout offers unobstructed views and serves as a key urban hub connecting major shopping streets, cultural sites, and public transport lines.
The square is well-maintained, with wide pedestrian areas that make it ideal for walking, meeting, or simply passing through the city center. A notable feature is the statue of Louis XIV, which adds historical significance to the space.
Accessibility is excellent, with direct connections to metro and bus networks, making it a convenient starting point for exploring Lyon. While the square itself is relatively minimal in terms of shade and seating, its central location compensates with easy access to nearby cafes, shops, and attractions.
Overall, Place Bellecour functions more as a strategic urban space than a leisure park, offering strong connectivity and a sense of scale that reflects the city’s structure.
Mike Z★★★★☆
Large city square that could really benefit from more trees, but there are practical obstacles for city implement it: just below the surface there is a massive underground garage and 2 lines of Metro, so no space for tree roots… Another reason is that historically the square was an open parade grounds. The attempt to solve the problem by installing colorful masts and arches looks somewhat weird on historic square.
Abhishek Maji★★★★★
Place Bellecour is one of those places that instantly makes you feel the scale and spirit of Lyon. The square is large and open, giving you a rare sense of space right in the middle of the city.
The view of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in the distance adds a beautiful backdrop, especially around sunset when the light softens the entire square. There’s often a relaxed atmosphere here—people walking, sitting, or just enjoying the surroundings—without it ever feeling too crowded or overwhelming.
Loo Yeo★★★★★
Place Bellecour was never only a promenade for the addresses around it. The façades and open sweep suited display, and the good society used it that way, but the square also lay across the city’s daily routes. To live south and go north for trade, administration, school, worship, or sociability meant crossing the same exposed ground, so prestige and passage were bound together from early on. Later access widened that mix further, bringing in people who did not live on its edges but used it as Lyon’s common threshold. That is why Bellecour still feels unsettled in a productive way. It has to carry ceremony, shortcuts, waiting, events, and rest on the same hard, heat-prone surface, and every attempt to cool or soften it also asks how a shared square should be lived.

We had a great day at the Village Outlet, easily 7-8 hours. There's a comprehensive variety of shops, with many of the key brands (both on the middle and higher end), so there's something for everyone. Outlet prices are rather compelling at most shops. A good tip would be to shortlist items first and make an entire round across all shops before making an informed purchase, to ensure you've gotten the best deal possible across all stores.
It's a short 1.4km walk to and from the train station, which is more predictable. Do note that the train towards Lyon city centre is hourly, so time your departure from the outlet accordingly.
Alexey Subach★★★★★
Great outlet, one of the best I have been to so far. It’s pretty small for an outlet but had a lot of good options for winter clothes and ski clothes in particular. They have an interactive map stands and a lot of places to seat. There is a big food court as well. Commute form Lyon is not super convenient (it’s a 20 mins walk from the station if you don’t have a car) but it’s expected for an outlet

Les Halles Paul Bocuse, Lyon’s celebrated indoor gourmet food market, is named after the legendary chef Paul Bocuse. It is home to some of the city’s finest cheeses, charcuterie, pastries, chocolates, and regional delicacies.
For a relaxed wine-and-cheese experience, I’d recommend Cellelier, where you can enjoy a glass of wine with a cheese platter (dégustation de fromages) or a charcuterie platter (dégustation de charcuterie) for just €11. It’s an excellent value and a perfect way to sample some of the region’s finest cheeses and cured meats.
Lyon is filled with excellent pâtisseries, from neighbourhood bakeries to the renowned food stalls of Les Halles Paul Bocuse. Voisin is one of the city’s most famous chocolatiers and pastry shops, and it was there that I had my first taste of Lyon’s iconic pink pralines, one of the city’s most distinctive sweet specialities.
Travel Maker★★★★★
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is not your typical market—it’s more like a high-end food paradise in the heart of Lyon. If you want to experience why Lyon is called the gastronomic capital of France, this is the place.
Inside, you’ll find everything from fresh seafood and premium cheeses to charcuterie, pastries, and ready-to-eat dishes. The quality is top-tier, and many of the vendors feel more like boutique shops than market stalls.
It’s a bit more expensive than a regular market, but the experience is absolutely worth it. The best way to enjoy it is to walk around, pick a few different foods, and eat on the spot. It feels more like a food tour than just shopping.
Perfect for food lovers who want to taste a bit of everything in one place.

if you go to only one place in Lyon for food, this has to be the place.
Highly recommend to go in the morning right through lunchtime. Or better yet, make an entire day out of it, discovering and pacing yourself across authentic Lyonnais food. It’s also a great place to pick up bread, cheese and fresh fruits for a picnic in the park, as well as souvenir sweets to take home.
Loo Yeo★★★★★
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is Lyon’s food reputation gathered indoors. At Cours Lafayette, its 56 specialist traders turn the hall into a dense circuit of cheese, charcuterie, seafood, bread, pastry, wine, produce, quenelles, traiteurs and counters. It is a place to shop, taste and sit down: oysters with white wine, a mâchon, bouchon cooking, chocolates, poultry, fruit, and prepared dishes all share the same public interior. Bocuse’s name gives the building its signature, but the deeper substance is in the traders, products and repeated rituals of buying and eating. The aisles named for the Mères lyonnaises add another layer, keeping Lyon’s older culinary memory inside today’s market.

Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s two most beautiful and vibrant public squares, rivaled only by Place des Jacobins. Nestled at the foot of the Croix-Rousse hill, this historic plaza has witnessed centuries of Lyon’s history. Its name, terreaux (“ditches” or “moats”), recalls the medieval defensive works that once protected the city. During the French Revolution, the square took on a darker role as the site of public executions by guillotine.
Today, Place des Terreaux is framed by two of Lyon’s most impressive landmarks: the magnificent Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), with its grand Baroque façade, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, housed in a former 17th-century Benedictine convent. The museum is often considered one of France’s finest art museums outside Paris, and both buildings provide outstanding opportunities for photography.
At the center of the square stands the dramatic Bartholdi Fountain, created by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor best known for designing the Statue of Liberty. The fountain depicts France as a chariot pulled by four powerful horses representing the country’s major rivers. Originally commissioned for Bordeaux, it was ultimately installed in Lyon, giving it a fascinating story to match its striking appearance.
The square itself was redesigned in the 1990s by artist Daniel Buren and architect Christian Drevet, who transformed the open space into an interactive urban landscape. Embedded fountains and water jets emerge unexpectedly from the pavement, delighting children and adults alike. After dark, subtle lighting effects create a magical atmosphere, turning the plaza into both a visual spectacle and a playful gathering place.
Whether you are interested in history, architecture, art, or simply soaking up the local atmosphere, Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s essential destinations. It is the perfect place to pause over a coffee, enjoy a meal or gelato, watch the city go by, and experience the lively spirit that makes Lyon one of France’s most captivating cities.
Mike Z★★★★★
In 16th century the the place undergone the transformation from muddy ditch to large unpaved market square as a result of city’s northward expansion and construction of Hotel de Ville. Benedictine convent rebuilt as a grand palace is now Museum of Fine Arts. Finally, in 1892 the square received its crown jewel: Bartholdi Fountain. Today the Place des Terreaux is vibrant pedestrian hub, and the most memorable landmark in Lyon for me.
Mariana Nahirna★★★★★
A wonderful place for a walk. It has the feel of French streets. Atmospheric Lyon.
Wisanu Tuntawiroon★★★★★
Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s most vibrant and historically rich squares, nestled between the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts. With its lively atmosphere, striking architecture, and cultural significance, it’s a natural gathering spot and a favorite among both locals and visitors.
At the heart of the square stands the dramatic Bartholdi Fountain, a masterpiece of bronze sculpture featuring a chariot pulled by four wild horses—designed by the same artist who created the Statue of Liberty. The fountain alone is worth the visit, offering a powerful sense of movement and expression.

A big clothing store in Westfield shopping mall. There are two storey, female at lower floor, and men & children on higher floor.
Plenty of choice and fashionable clothing. The prices are very attractive, and there is tax refund entitlement for international guests. But you need to bring to the reception at ground floor of the mall to do the procedures.
There are cashier counters for both floors, and you may pay by cash or card. Service staff at counters are friendly and fast.

After finding a defect in the product, I came back to return it with the bill. To my dismay, I was informed that it will not be accepted because the price tag was cut off. Despite mentioning that I can still return the price tag, they said it wouldn’t be possible because it had to be with the product. I am utterly disappointed with the product quality, appalled at the service, and lack of consistency in sharing the policy, and a namesake policy, where they will only accept returns contingent on the price tag staying with the product.

Place de la République opens as a broad paved pause in the middle of Rue de la République, with a long basin catching jets, reflections and passing movement. Alain Sarfati’s 1990s redesign stripped the surface back and sent parking and service access down into Parc République, sunk below the paving and below the Rhône water table. Since then the basin has become part of the square’s script. During the Fête des Lumières it catches luminous trees, floating forms and mirrored light. Earlier versions of this same ground held a garden, then a monumental fountain, then the Carnot monument. The square now holds central Lyon in layers: movement across the stone, access below it, spectacle in the water.

Visited on an afternoon on a weekday in May. It was deserted and looked dull and boring. May be comes to life in the evening, but we didn't stay to see that. Looked more like a shopping spot for locals than a tourist attraction.

Nice square to have some rest for there are benches while seeing the fountain, buildings around are beautiful; good place to make snapshots. There is a lot of things to see, it is quite representative of French life style and architecture. Recommendable place to visit.

The centerpiece of the square, the impressive statue of Marianne, serves as a symbol of liberty and democracy. Its presence adds a touch of historical significance to the square, reminding all who pass by of the values it represents.
The surrounding cafes and restaurants offer a perfect vantage point for people-watching.
The square's central location makes it a convenient starting point for exploring Lyon.

Beautiful classical architecture all round! A great treat for the senses for those of us in the architecture and design industries!
*note: NOTHING is open, shops wise, other than food joints!

Decent shopping center - the auchan is quite big, there are lots of clothes shops and both fast restaurants and sit down places. Not a great mall compared to other aushopping centers I've been to, but very good for being relatively remote compared to Lyon.

Cosy, clean and very friendly merchants. The prices on the other hand arent the best, and there's some stupid "security check" protocols, don't be surprised or take it on the guard if he asks you to show your bag.

A nice place to stop and to tank when coming back from the south!! Local food products, good quality for an even good price....and so close from the highway...you can tank really cheaper!! Love it!!

Easy to reach from the autoroute. Huge shopping mall, with a large hypermarker (Auchan). Very cheap petrol & diesel.

Very helpful shopping center. Should visit if you are a tourist.
Practical Tips for Shopping in Lyon
While the selection of stores in Lyon is world-class, understanding the local customs and logistics will significantly enhance your experience. The city operates on a rhythm that differs slightly from other major metropolises, and knowing when to go, how to pay, and how to get your purchases home can save you both time and money. These tips are designed to help you navigate the retail landscape like a local rather than a tourist.
1). Respect the Lunch Break
Many independent boutiques and artisan shops in Lyon close for a two-hour lunch break, typically between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Unlike large department stores, these smaller shops value the French tradition of pausing midday. Plan your shopping itinerary to include a long lunch during this window to avoid waiting outside locked doors.
2). Bring Your Own Bag
While plastic bags are being phased out across France, many smaller boutiques charge a small fee for paper bags or have limited supply. Carrying a foldable tote bag is not only more sustainable but also makes it easier to carry purchases from multiple stores as you wander through the pedestrian zones.
3). Know the Tax Refund Rules
If you are a non-EU resident, you are entitled to a VAT refund (détaxe) on purchases over €100 made in the same store on the same day. You must ask for the paperwork at the point of sale and have it validated at the airport kiosk before checking your luggage. Ensure the store displays a “Tax Free Shopping” sticker before you commit to a large purchase.
4). Visit Markets Early
If you are shopping for fresh produce or gourmet food items, arrive at the markets before 10:00 AM. The best cuts of meat, the freshest fish, and the most delicate pastries sell out quickly. By late morning, the markets become crowded, and the pace becomes more rushed, making it harder to ask vendors for advice or samples.
5). Learn Basic French Pleasantries
While many high-end store clerks in Lyon speak English, greeting them with a polite “Bonjour” upon entering and “Merci, au revoir” upon leaving is essential etiquette. In France, the customer is not always right, but a polite customer is always treated better. Starting an interaction without a greeting is considered very rude and will likely result in colder service.
Lyon offers a shopping experience that is deeply intertwined with its identity as a city of artisans, gourmands, and historians. By focusing your time on the districts and markets highlighted above, you can curate a collection of goods that tells a story—whether it is a silk scarf dyed with traditional methods or a bottle of Côtes du Rhône from a small producer. The value of shopping here lies not just in the objects you acquire, but in the conversations you have with the people who made them.
As you walk the streets with your bags in hand, take the time to appreciate the architecture that houses these modern boutiques. From Renaissance courtyards to industrial warehouses converted into concept stores, the environment adds a layer of romance to the act of buying. Lyon proves that in a world of online shopping and fast fashion, the physical act of discovering a treasure in a beautiful city remains an irreplaceable pleasure.
