Finding a reliable pharmacy in Lyon is about more than just filling a prescription. Whether you are a resident navigating the French healthcare system or a traveler who has run out of essential medication, you need a chemist that offers expert advice, convenient hours, and a welcoming atmosphere.
The French pharmacy experience is unique, often serving as the first point of contact for minor ailments and health consultations. Lyon, as France’s second-largest metropolitan area, boasts a dense network of highly trained professionals.
From historic establishments in Presqu’île to modern dispensaries in the bustling arrondissements, the city offers a diverse range of services including orthopedics, homeopathy, and veterinary care. Knowing where to go can save you time and ensure you receive the precise care you need.
The best pharmacies in Lyon distinguish themselves through their commitment to patient education and personalized service. Many operate late into the evening or on Sundays to accommodate emergencies, while others specialize in natural remedies or dermo-cosmetics.
Navigating the local regulations, such as the “tiers payant” system and the availability of generic medications, is much easier with a knowledgeable pharmacist by your side. In this guide, we have curated a selection of establishments known for their professional integrity and customer service.
We focus on locations that are easily accessible, well-stocked, and staffed by teams who take the time to listen. Whether you are looking for a 24-hour emergency service or a boutique pharmacy for premium skincare, Lyon has an option to suit your specific requirements.
Our recommendations are based on consistent performance, accessibility, and the ability to bridge language barriers often faced by international visitors. A good pharmacy is a cornerstone of community health, and these selections represent the gold standard in the Rhône region.
We have prioritized establishments that integrate modern technology, such as online prescription uploads, with traditional face-to-face care. Below, you will find a detailed list of the 15 best pharmacies in Lyon.
Each entry has been selected for its unique strengths, from central locations near major transport hubs to specialized compounding services. Use this guide to make an informed choice for your health and wellbeing in the capital of gastronomy.

I went during the middle of the day on a Friday, and there were lots of staff people around to answer questions. There are separate lines for speaking to a pharmacist vs checking out to pay, and separate consultants around the skin care products for questions. The prices were good and the selection was excellent.

It's very good price here compared to other pharmacy. I bought a few cosmetic and vitamins here. The staff spoke a bit of English. It's very busy and can be a long lineup to the cashier. Popular with the tourist.

Hello, I visited your pharmacy during a weekend trip to Lyon. When selecting the products, the factice (empty display) boxes were taken from the shelves, and at the cashier the representative went inside to bring the full versions. Since we purchased many items and did not pack the bag ourselves, we only realized after returning from our trip that one of the products given to us was actually a factice (an empty display box). I would like to share the related documents with you regarding this issue. Could you please provide your email address?
We sent an email but haven’t received a response yet. Could you please check your spam/junk folder? The email might have been delivered there.

I went to this 24-hour pharmacy to buy an over-the-counter medication. When I went to pay, the pharmacist asked me to pay an additional €10 fee. When he showed me the receipt for this fee, it clearly stated "€10 Prescription." I pointed out that I didn't have a prescription, since I was buying an over-the-counter medication. His only response was, "That's how it is."
I find this situation incomprehensible, and the lack of explanation is very regrettable. If specific fees apply to 24-hour pharmacies, they should be clearly explained and reflect the customer's situation. A very disappointing experience.
Enfeal Rahmoune★☆☆☆☆
We've been waiting for over an hour outside this on-call pharmacy, and as I write this, it's still raining.
The real problem is the wait time: more than 20 minutes per person, which is incredibly long and creates an interminable wait. We understand the need to be thorough and check prescriptions, but in an on-call setting, better organization is truly necessary.
My thoughts are with those who will have to wait next… and I hope this can be improved.
Wiam Rabah★☆☆☆☆
A completely outrageous experience. I went to buy a simple box of Doliprane, sold without a prescription, for €2.18. At the time of payment, I was charged an additional €10, bringing the total to €12.18, under the pretext of a prescription. No clear explanation was given to me before I paid. I find this practice completely abusive and incomprehensible. Such a lack of transparency is unacceptable. I will not be returning to this pharmacy and I advise against this establishment if you value being informed of the charges you are being billed.
siwar khalifa★☆☆☆☆
Very disappointed 😞
I went in to buy a cleansing gel, and the man asked me for €10 more than the price of the gel as a service charge!!!!
Absolutely shameful!
Knowing that the prices are already very high in this pharmacy, adding €10 per prescription is outrageous!!! It's a real rip-off
Aurélien Fezzoli★☆☆☆☆
First, you need to be incredibly patient for the pharmacist to deign to wake up and serve you. I had to ring the bell about ten times and knock on the window to get any sign of life… (Had he gotten lost on Instagram? We'll never know). Second, he was wide awake afterward, because he saw that the prescription was a month past its expiry date (for a recurring medication, fully covered by basic insurance) and therefore made me pay for it… A true business genius…
So, if I understand correctly, and according to your response, the pharmacist dispensed medication without a prescription and was simply following the law? And all this without informing the healthcare system? Come on…

First of all the store is amazing. So many great products at right prices. But the most importantly i would like to thank the staff and the pharmacist there. They are so helpful. I asked so many questions about different products and she explained to me in details. I loved this place and I highly recommend to go there. I ended up buying the right products that suit my body and skin the best.

SCAM prices pharmacie!
I bought 2 products, and both of them presented different prices after being scanned at the cashier. Apparently, it was more expensive, for example, 7.79€ instead of 6.99€. I went back to the shelves of those products and rechecked their prices again. I took a photo and showed it to the cashier. He said it was the reduction price 20%. I said that it's not possible 20% from 7.79€ is 6.23€. He said it is the price of 20% reduction of 2nd cheaper product. It still wasn't correct because I bought 2 identical products. I fed up to continue arguing, so I left the shop. And I found out that another product I bought it is more expensive than I saw from its shelf too (26.9€ instead of 23.9€). Very disappointed 😞

Huge crowds in all the departments! We couldn't get through! Only one very slow cashier opened the self-service and 5 very slow prescription checkouts; queues that went all the way into the departments! While the other checkouts were empty and closed! The manager needs to hire fast cashiers and install self-service checkouts! Open all the prescription checkouts when they are so full! It's IMPOSSIBLE to get wheelchairs or disabled people through; we get jostled by bags, backpacks, etc. It's painful to have to wait to pay for non-prescription items at the prescription checkout! The manager needs to get out of your sleeping offices and see the chaos outside! The departments are very narrow! Obese people in wide wheelchairs don't get through at all! We can't get through the checkout without prescriptions, they're full of people who are in the way! It's very hot and human warmth too! Run away! Avoid! While across the street, the pharmacy has an empty business = rent and expand! Because the departments, passageways, etc. are very poorly laid out!

Unreliable pharmacy: when they promise to set aside an essential medication for you to pick up within the week, you come by two days later and they've sold it to someone else!! Immediate profiteering or total disorganization, or both, surely!! Avoid!
The pharmacy's response twists the story in its own way: I called back on Monday to say I'd come by on Thursday, and the pharmacy confirmed they were keeping it aside! I finally came by on Wednesday, a day earlier, and it had been sold. This pharmacy is therefore definitely not reliable and is spinning stories to try to justify its error and unreliability.

On a Sunday shift, I went in for emergency medical assistance. I received excellent advice from the pharmacist who helped me. However, as a pharmacy technician myself, I find it OUTRAGEOUS how long it took for this pharmacist to come and help me when my fiancé collapsed in front of YOUR pharmacy. I had to shout at least three times before anyone came to help me, and what's even more shocking is that other patients arrived to help me before she did. You are a pharmacy; you HAVE A DUTY to help your patients when they have a health problem, especially one like this.

Rude and unhelpful. Staff did laps around the aisle glaring at me like I must be trying to steal things without ever offering assistance. I have to say I agree with previous reviews of the security guard. He stopped me on my way out after I spent 60 euros in the store (and had the receipts to show) but he insisted on looking in my handbag. When challenged he told me it was his job and this is normal. Sir I have never been asked to show anyone the contents of my hangbag upon leaving a store, let alone a pharmacy. I don't know what happened to make them so paranoid but I won't be returning because this experience was so unpleasant and unnecessary.

My single experience with the pharmacist at this pharmacy was enough to ensure I never return. Instead of taking responsibility for their mistake, they tried to portray themselves as the poor doctor being attacked by the patient who, thanks to their lack of professionalism, was left without pain medication!
Note: The patient was suffering from unbearable pain following a car accident (fractured collarbone, rib, and tibia). I should point out that the pharmacist didn't even bother to ask about the patient's condition or if they had any pain medication.

I went to the Bellecour pharmacy this Saturday, July 7th, at 37 Place Bellecour, 69002 Lyon.
I'm clarifying this because, having read previous comments, the owner almost always simply says that people are at the wrong pharmacy and that the situations described below have never happened at his establishment.
I can therefore confirm that it is indeed the owner of the pharmacy (light-colored eyes, rather thin, and extremely rude).
To be fair, I went there extremely late (7:28 PM, with a closing time of 7:30 PM) because I have a health problem that requires a very important medication. I barely had time to explain my situation when this charming manager told me, and I quote:
"You have two minutes to find me your prescription, pronto, or I'll send you packing, Lyonnaise style. I'll be in my car in 10 minutes."
So I didn't get the pleasure of experiencing what a proper farewell to Lyonnaise felt like, since I went to the on-call pharmacy next door where the pharmacists are much more welcoming.
There are far more diplomatic ways to speak to people when you're in a hurry to close up shop... especially for a pharmacy whose primary objective is to support and advise its customers.
Avoid at all costs!

A huge thank you to the Grande Pharmacie de l’Ouest Lyonnais… for making me switch pharmacies!
Last Friday, I went, as I do quite regularly, to the Grande Pharmacie de l’Ouest Lyonnais—a customer for over 20 years—to pick up my medication in advance of a six-week trip abroad. So far, so good.
But then the pharmacist refused to give me my blood pressure medication, explaining that I had recently taken it and figuring I probably had enough for my trip.
She did offer me a prescription form, though, as a consolation prize. And to top it all off, she suggested I go to the pharmacy next door, since I had already been there according to my health insurance card. As a result, a little annoyed at the time, I went to the Pharmacie du Point du Jour (Hello Pharmacie)… and there, a miracle! A warm welcome, attentive listening, efficiency, and my medication arrived without any problems. It just goes to show that sometimes unpleasant surprises can be wonderful opportunities.
From now on, I've made up my mind: I won't be going anywhere else. Thank you to Hello Pharmacie for their professionalism and kindness. And thank you to La Grande Pharmacie for opening my eyes—unintentionally, admittedly, but effectively!
Tips for Choosing the Right Pharmacy in Lyon
Navigating the French pharmacy system can be slightly different from other countries, particularly regarding how medications are dispensed and priced. Understanding the local landscape will help you communicate your needs effectively and ensure you are not caught off guard during an emergency. The following tips are designed to help you maximize the services available and understand your rights as a patient or customer.
1). Know the “Pharmacie de Garde” System
Pharmacies in France do not stay open 24/7 on a voluntary basis; they rotate through a legal duty schedule. If you need medication late at night, on a Sunday, or during a public holiday, you must locate the designated “pharmacie de garde.” You can find this information posted on the doors of closed pharmacies, on the local police station website, or by calling 3237.
2). Understand the Green Cross and “Tiers Payant”
Look for the illuminated green cross, which often flashes when the pharmacy is on night duty. If you have a French Carte Vitale or a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), most pharmacies utilize the “tiers payant” system, meaning you will not have to pay upfront for prescribed medication. However, if you are a tourist without European coverage, you will pay out of pocket and should request a “feuille de soins” for your travel insurance reimbursement.
3). Ask for Generics (“Médicaments Génériques”)
French pharmacists are legally required to offer generic substitutes unless the doctor has marked the prescription “non substituable.” Generics are significantly cheaper and equally effective. Don’t be shy to ask, “Avez-vous un générique?” to save money, especially if you are paying the full price without insurance coverage.
4). Leverage the Pharmacist’s Expertise
In France, pharmacists are highly trained medical professionals. You do not always need to see a doctor for minor issues like colds, allergies, or minor skin irritations. Describe your symptoms clearly, and the pharmacist can dispense over-the-counter medications that are often stronger and more targeted than what you might find in a standard supermarket abroad.
5). Check for Parapharmacie Sections
Many large pharmacies in Lyon have a distinct “parapharmacie” area dedicated to non-medicinal health products. This is where you will find high-quality French pharmacy skincare brands (like Avène, La Roche-Posay, and Bioderma) at competitive prices, as well as baby care, supplements, and orthopedic supports. These sections are excellent for purchasing trusted products that are often cheaper than in department stores.
Choosing the right pharmacy is about aligning your specific health needs with the establishment’s specialty. Whether you prioritize late-night access in the Vieux Lyon or a wide selection of natural remedies in the 6th arrondissement, the city’s pharmacists are generally renowned for their discretion and thoroughness.
We hope this curated list helps you find a trusted health partner in Lyon. Always verify the current opening hours before traveling, as rotations and holiday schedules can vary, and remember that for serious medical emergencies, you should dial 15 (SAMU) or 112 for immediate assistance.
