17 Best Bars in Lyon

Lyon sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, but its reputation flows just as strongly through its culinary veins. Often hailed as the gastronomic capital of France, this city takes its drinking almost as seriously as its food. From traditional bouchons pouring local Beaujolais to hidden speakeasies shaking up inventive cocktails, the social fabric of Lyon is best experienced with a glass in hand.

Navigating the city’s drinking scene can feel overwhelming, as the options range from historic Renaissance courtyards in Vieux Lyon to industrial-chic spaces in the up-and-coming Confluence district. Whether you are a wine purist, a craft beer enthusiast, or a cocktail connoisseur, Lyon offers a distinct atmosphere for every preference. The French concept of apéro—that sacred pre-dinner hour—is practically a religion here, making bar-hopping an essential part of the local culture.

The diversity of neighborhoods dictates the vibe of your evening. In the cobbled streets of the Old Town, you will find intimate bouchons where the wine list is written on a chalkboard and the patron knows everyone by name. Cross the river to the Presqu’île, and the energy shifts to chic, bustling establishments where mixologists treat vermouth and absinthe with the same precision a chef applies to a sauce.

For travelers and locals alike, the best bars in Lyon offer more than just a drink; they provide a window into the city’s soul. You might find yourself sipping a natural wine next to a silk merchant’s former workshop, or tasting a barrel-aged Negroni in a former warehouse. The key is knowing where to look, and understanding that in Lyon, quality is never compromised for convenience.

We have curated a list that spans the city’s geographic and stylistic spectrum, ensuring you can find the perfect spot regardless of your mood. These venues have been selected based on the quality of their pours, the uniqueness of their atmosphere, and their commitment to the authentic Lyonnais way of life. They represent the pinnacle of the city’s drinking culture, where service is warm and the craft is respected.

Here is our definitive selection of the drinking establishments that truly define the social scene in this vibrant French metropolis.

Excellent vibes and great bartenders who were a pleasure to interact with. Hugo is a great bartender who can recommend and suggest good tips for the tourists and travellers stopping by this watering hole. Wide variety and choice of beverages. Highly recommend dropping by here if you’re around the area.

The Black Hole is probably the best find on our trip in Lyon during the Rugby World cup 2023. A family owned business, the owners are just lovely and super friendly. The place was honestly spotless and it's the cleanest pub we have been to! Not to mention the coolest decorations and awesome beer on offer. A must visit!

Great cocktails and atmosphere 🎸

Great service, good music (modern rock / pop punk) Popped in while solo traveling around France, first time I’ve ever had a Guinness IPA - more of an amber ale than a Indian Pale Ale but good beer nonetheless!

Very friendly and helpful service, they were kind about my attempts to speak french! We enjoyed the happy hour prices and delicious cheese board.

Horrible experience! Went there with a group of friends to watch the world cup brasil match, and one of my friends got blocked because he was wearing a casual outfit. CONTEXT: Soccer match! There was no outfit warning and as a brazillian group we just wanted to have a good time together. Plus, the doormen didnt want to let my other friend (girl) enter with her two male friends because the ratio men:women wouldn't be balence. Spoiler, we are in 2026 and such act is called mysoginism. Well, the bar lost a group of 15 people and we ended up going next door to the Irish Pub (Kellys) that welcomed us very well and was able to stream the match. Pas drole pour un bar "latino"! Not to come back!!!!

this bar is nice, the karaoke night is really good, but they charged me twice for one tinto de verano. so if you come here you should always choose to get your receipt so you don't get charged twice for one drink.

My husband and I happened upon Soda Bar by chance while strolling through Lyon. It's a great find! They have a creative cocktail list along with a nice selection of small plates. The overall vibe was reflected in the decor and especially the music, which was a great mix of classic and remixed soul and R&B. We'd happily go back.

The attentive staff adds to the allure, providing friendly and knowledgeable service that ensures every visit is nothing short of memorable. Whether you're enjoying a quiet evening with friends or celebrating a special occasion, the atmosphere at Soda Bar sets the stage for an unforgettable experience filled with warmth and hospitality.

Very tasty cocktails. The night my gf and I went, they had a guest bartender from the Monkey Club. We tried his collaboration cocktails and they were great. Then we had one of the house signature cocktails and they were also great. Afterwards, we asked the main bartender to make us something experimental and he asked us for our preferences and made something amazing for us both! Highly recommended!

Very nice experience at this bar by the river. The cocktails were great, the food was good and the weather really helped. The charcuterie board was not amazing but good enough. Would definitely come back!

Got told we couldn’t go in because we were three males “without girls”. I would recommend going next door, better bar, more fun and far cheaper, Bebe is great

From which century is this bar? They didn't permit us to entry to the bar because we wore sneakers. Warning: ultra stereotype dress for women and men, solid binary and formal costume to enter.

It's really my fault for ordering a Caipirinha in France. LOL not that much like the Brazilian version. I enjoyed the atmosphere and quick friendly service.

The ambience is the worst of all the other boats, also overpriced they tried to charge me more. All the staff just wants to take your money. But the worst part is one night they let you in and other night they won’t let you without any explanation. Never going back there.

I revisited Lyon after a year, and of course I had to stop by here again. The owner is just as kind and welcoming as always. The beer is great, and the cocktails are amazing too — they’ll even make one on the spot tailored to your taste. They also have board games, which makes it a fun place to hang out and play with friends. Always such a warm and friendly place. 🌈💖 Queer Forever
Jeremie Le Hen★★☆☆☆
Two stars because this review is heavily indexed on the drinks and food, which weren't gold in my opinion. The service and atmosphere were fine. We came here for cocktails after a quick search on Google Maps. We were quite disappointed. There's no cocktail menu, you simply tell the bar tender whether you want something sweet or sour. Being a cocktail enthusiast, I was quite excited by the prospect of experiencing genuine cocktail craft, especially after the bar tender boasted about his 15 years of experience as a cocktail maker. Unfortunately the cocktails were very common and flat. At least compared to what I know from real cocktail bars. The "tapas plate (20 pieces)" was frozen junk food, worth a fast food. The service was good and pleasant. The atmosphere was average, nothing outstanding.

If you're in Lyon and searching for a place that elevates your experience, L Bar is a hidden gem that deserves a glowing spotlight. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with an inviting atmosphere that feels both chic and cozy—an effortless blend of Lyonnais sophistication and contemporary charm. The ambiance is truly something to behold, with warm lighting, tasteful décor, and an energy that makes it the perfect spot for anything from a casual evening to a special occasion. The staff is exceptionally welcoming, striking the perfect balance between attentive service and giving you the space to unwind and enjoy your time. Whether you're meeting friends, on a romantic date, or simply soaking in the vibrant Lyon nightlife, L Bar is a spot you'll keep coming back to.

This pub does GORGEOUS burgers and a FANTASTIC sauce selection… hands down one of the best burgers I’ve had. Thank you to the very sweet waitress who was friendly and polite. Inside is pretty dark and mysterious, and on a busy night I can imagine it to be a very lively place, but when I went with my friends at 5pm ish, we were the only ones. Merci beaucoup 🍔🍟

Great vibe and amazing service. A good variety of tap beer. The burger and fish sandwich were some of the better pub food I have had. Will be back again in Lyon!

Absolutely fantastic! I have never seen such service, so cool decorations, so varied beer and so many beautiful girls in one place. I love this bar! Thank you Vincent for your fantastic work!
Costas Pom★★★★★
We had a private party here last Saturday and everything worked perfectly. The private room is great in terms of isolating the sound, we were able to play loud music without disturbing other guests. We were around 40 people which i think is the perfect number for the room (more would be too narrow). Friendly bar man, no long queues to buy drinks. We got snacks in the price which tasted really good. I recommend it without hesitation if you are looking to book a private party
Jeremy L★★★★★
We had a wonderful time at Flan' Ruin Pub. The decor and atmosphere are wonderful and we had a private room to ourselves for a dance party of 35 people and we played our own (loud) music. Vincent and his staff were superb hosts, so hospitable and accommodating and I would highly recommend the pub for any future event!

Seems like a bar that's resisting time and change. The atmosphere is impeccable and the music selection is great. Prices are acceptable and they have local beer and almost every spirit that you can imagine. We arrived pretty early so it was empty but as time went on people started pouring in. The chandelier stands as the crowning jewel of the place.
Dave Bagbey★★★★★
I Googled bar near me open on a Sunday night very late that was open and found this place. Have to say we had a great time. We all ordered ol fashioneds and very tasty. Great selection of old school music on vinyl. Local guy spontaneously breaking out a guitar and playing and singing that had the whole place pretty happy. I would say a must stop. The reviews are mixed but we had a great time.
Johan Löf★★★★☆
Very cozy place 🤗 Kind of tight inside, but 2 floors and the feeling was more of a comfortable livingroom than a pub (I mean this in a good way 😅) A nice selection of wines and spirits. Since it is in France, the beer on taps were not really that inspiring. They got about 5-6 of them, so I guess it is sufficient. The staff was very kind, welcoming and helpful. The seats outside was OK. There were awnings to shield from the sun ☀️😎👍 There was ice water provided for free. Toilets were clean 😀

A place for everyone to come and get an fun and delicious drink! As a tourist, I came to Lyon for a weekend trip and arrived late Friday night. We fell upon this place as it was nearby our hotel. From the outside the bar looked a bit dull, but as soon as we entered, the atmosphere was chill and relaxing and we felt very comfortable. For the first round of drinks we ordered some kinds of berry/vodka and lemon/meringue drinks. The first one wasn't really speciel, but the latter was a fun mixture of different kind of citruses and was served like a mini lemon pie. For the second round, we got chocolate/rum drink which was really special and delicious, and a 'neu' mojito with jägermeister which added a more german flavour to the classic mojito. The bar interieur had a German theme with many cuckoo clocks and the DJ started off with some house music, but later got more lazy with the mixing and the songs kept going on. 8/10

À pitiful bar with racist people garding it. They ejected a friend of mine although we all had our own drinks and said « you have Arabic faces that’s why you’re thrown out ». They accused a person in our group to still bear when we literally didn’t order any bear nor drink bear. Cherry on top, they used tear gas on some members of our group when it was uncalled for. This bar should be shut down by the police.

The most un Australian place i’ve ever been to. Is using a politically incorrect name for the bar which would not be accepted in Australia. Refused to play the song land down under, stating they needed to accomodate all cultures (but not the Australian culture they named their bar after). And didn’t adhere to their happy hour prices. Don’t bother going

This is not a fancy bar, but rather the place where all drunk Erasmus students end up in Lyon. You're definitely going to have a good time, especially if you go on Mondays when beer is just one euro. Yep.

Not the kind to say or leave bad reviews, rather to give honest comments, NEVER in my 27 years, after being a waiter, a restaurant owner, and training people for customer service have I ever encountered such poor service, we technically paid to be mistreated, mislead in term of food, and the only reason we didnot leave, was because at least WE had respect for the people on the table that had to rush for a train and were starving. Don't know who the owner is, but franckly hope you get better service rather than the one guy from yesterday, maybe he was on a bad day working on May 1st, but honestly that is no way to treat any customer. Food was decent enough(at least) respectfully so, I won't be coming back nor recommending people to come, please get better service ASAP.
Loren Seeger★☆☆☆☆
I was looking forward to visiting this bar. Unfortunately, I should have listened to the negative reviews. The server was extremely rude and simply miserable. Save your time and money- there are a million bars in Lyon that have an ounce of class and real cocktails that are not on draft.

Overall nice bar. But there’s one waiter who has a serious problem keeping his hands to himself. We were a group of 6 who had to be seated in the bar area so it was a bit cramped. As I was taking off my coat to sit, the waiter shoved me so he could get by. Not even an “ excuse me”. I decided to ignore his behavior and figured “ it’s a busy night, he’s just trying to get the job done, so I’ll steer clear from him. But a few moments later he put his hand on my friends’ shoulder, as he was walking past us, and we don’t even know why considering he was sitting and out of the way. It was really uncomfortable for him. Definitely not a place I will be returning to anytime soon. Unless I can get a seat away from rude waiters who don’t know how to keep their hands up themselves.

Excellent, unique cocktails, along the very best I've had in Lyon or elsewhere, made by an expert bartender with a menu that rotates frequently. Beautiful and cozy vintage-style interior. Together we tried four cocktails on our visit and all were excellent and craftfully made. The snack platters were delicious and substantial. Friendly and polite staff. Will absolutely return!

Really great cocktail bar. Super friendly staff, it was towards the end of the night so there was no one in there but us. Had a few drinks and left, the two female bartenders are very friendly and super helpful with describing their drinks. Must stop by!

We stumbled upon this place with a group of friends in the spring of 2026. We met the wonderful duo Clément and Marie, who gave us a warm welcome, offered helpful advice, and made us feel like right at home. In addition to their original and high-quality cocktails—both alcoholic and non-alcoholic—they are always incredibly attentive! They spontaneously offer a small misting spray and a fan to every customer. And they always have a smile on their face. Thank you so much, and... see you soon! 😁

Spectacular cocktails, service, and vibes. Everyone who works here, and even the regulars, are super kind, helpful, and welcoming to semi-clueless Americans such as myself and my travel partner. The Caipi-berry cocktail is absolutely delicious. Great decor and music as well. Thanks so much!

It's a very fun travel-themed bar that also does events. It offers board games too! They have a large selection of drinks and cocktails, the cocktails are all very well made and delicious, not too sweet and filled up with cheap alcohol, like many other cocktail bars around here. Some finger foods available too, which were tasty. Overall it's a really cool bar, perfect hangout with many friends or smaller settings.

Stumbled (and i mean stumbled) across this amazing bar while visiting Lyon. What a place! The staff were amazing and certainly knew their drinks, letting us order cocktails which werent on menu... and making them perfectly. The zombies are to die for!

Delicious cocktails! They are really good. It was my first time here but my friends are frequent guests and they are never disappointed. There is a slight performance with some cocktails. They serve water too. There is a traditional cocktail that won once a world class prize. There is a light at tables that you use to call a waitress.

Superb! It’s as dark as it needs to be in order to keep this old, moody atmosphere! We had a few cocktails there with colleagues and we had a great time. The young lady that served us was super helpful. Drinks were strong and clear, prices were fair enough. I recommend the place for sure! odil prochain prix

Overall: 7.5/10 average 10€ for a drink Drinks: 6.5/10 - the cocktails are so so sweet! even the sour ones aren’t as sour as sweet! I couldn’t taste but sugar in both of my cocktails. However the alcohol used is high quality ones. - The size of the drinks is definitely smaller than it should be, specially with the huge piece of glass, the cocktail would be around 20ml! - There is no food at all, be careful. They will offer you olives with the drinks. Location: Lyon, 1st center Staff and service: 9/10 Very Friendly staff and excellent service . Ambiance and setup: 9/10 Very nice place, well decorated and cosy price: 8/10 A bit pricey for the size of the drinks

Very nice place to drink something in the middle of old city. There are a lot of tables and places to stay. The fries are really good.

Very negative experience with security. We were falsely accused of already being inside, which was not true. Even after showing Uber proof, we were refused entry. We were sober and felt unfairly treated and discriminated against as foreigners. Staff was aggressive and unprofessional. Not recommended.

I paid 16€ for 4 tequila and it was completely watered down!! When we complained to the bartender he just laughed

Boston becomes a type of night club the Fridays and weekends. They had a great selection of music and even if there was a waiting line for 15 minutes, it was worth it. I totally recommend to go there after 24:00 and go drink something somewhere else before hand dur to the great amount of people inside Boston - it’s going to be difficult to be served.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Lyon

Before you set out to explore these incredible venues, it is helpful to understand a few nuances of the local drinking culture. Lyon operates on a rhythm that differs slightly from Paris or other major European cities, balancing a relaxed Southern European pace with the refined expectations of a gastronomic capital. Knowing how to navigate the timings, etiquette, and local specialties will significantly enhance your experience and help you blend in with the locals.

1. Master the Art of the Apéro

The hours between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM are sacred in Lyon. This is the apéro hour, a transition period between work and dinner where the focus is on light drinks and conversation. Do not expect to order a heavy meal at a bar during this time; instead, look for venues that offer complimentary olives, charcuterie, or small snacks with your drinks. It is a social ritual designed to open the appetite, so pace yourself accordingly.

2. Do Not Skip the Local Wines

While Lyon has a thriving cocktail scene, ignoring the regional wines would be a mistake. The city is the gateway to Beaujolais, the Northern Rhône, and Burgundy. When in doubt, ask for a pot of local wine—a traditional glass bottle often served in bouchons. Look for Gamay from Beaujolais or a crisp Viognier from Condrieu. In many of the best bars, the house wine is often a hidden gem sourced directly from a local vigneron.

3. Understand the Late Night Timeline

Dinner in Lyon typically starts late, usually around 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM, which means bars often have two distinct crowds. The early evening crowd is there for pre-dinner drinks, while the late-night crowd arrives after 11:00 PM. If you want a seat at a popular cocktail bar, go early or be prepared to stand. Unlike some cities where bar-hopping is continuous, many Lyonnais will stay at one venue for the entire night, so tables turn over slowly.

4. Embrace the Bouchon Culture

While technically restaurants, many traditional bouchons function as the best casual bars in the city. You do not necessarily need to eat a full meal to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink. These spaces are the heart of Lyonnais identity, offering an atmosphere that is boisterous, warm, and unpretentious. If you want an authentic experience, skip the sterile lobby bar and find a bouchon where the patron is pouring Côte-Rôtie by the glass.

5. Look Beyond the Main Squares

The areas directly adjacent to Place des Terreaux and Place Bellecour can be touristy and often lack the quality found just a street or two away. Lyon is a city of traboules (hidden passageways) and unmarked doors. Some of the best speakeasies and wine cellars are located down quiet alleys or behind unmarked facades. Do not be afraid to wander into the Croix-Rousse district or the 7th arrondissement, where the local student and artist communities have created vibrant, less commercialized watering holes.

The beauty of drinking in Lyon lies in its refusal to separate the liquid from the culinary. A great bar here often feels like an extension of a great kitchen, where the garnishes are fresh from the market and the wine list is curated with a chef’s eye for terroir. Taking the time to explore these establishments will give you a deeper appreciation for why Lyon continues to hold its title as the heart of French gastronomy.

Whether you end your night with a final digestif on a riverboat or a last glass of Morgon in a candlelit cellar, you will find that the memories made in these spaces linger long after the glass is empty. Santé!
