17 Best Seafood Restaurants in Marseille

Marseille’s relationship with the sea defines its soul, its rhythm, and most importantly, its table. As France’s oldest city, this Mediterranean port has spent over 2,600 years perfecting the art of pulling dinner straight from the water. From the historic Vieux-Port to the hidden coves of the Calanques, the city offers a seafood scene that rivals anywhere in Europe.

Dining on seafood here is not merely a meal; it is a cultural ritual. You will find everything from unpretentious shacks serving paper cones of fried sardines to Michelin-starred tables presenting sculptural plates of sea urchin and lobster. The common thread is a profound respect for the day’s catch and the briny flavors of the Mediterranean.

However, navigating a port city famous for tourism requires local insight. It is easy to stumble into a tourist trap with a view but a frozen menu. To truly eat like a local, you need to know where the fishermen eat, where the bouillabaisse is still made according to charter, and where the oysters are shucked with precision.

This guide cuts through the noise to deliver the definitive list of the best seafood restaurants in Marseille. We have considered the freshness of the produce, the authenticity of the recipes, the atmosphere, and the value for money. Whether you are looking for a romantic sunset dinner or a loud, messy lunch with rosé, there is a table here for you.

We have prioritized establishments that source locally from the fish markets of the Vieux-Port and the coastal villages. You will notice a focus on seasonal eating—expect sea bass and red mullet in the summer, and shellfish and sea urchin in the winter months. This is how Marseille eats.

Below, you will find our curated selection of the 17 essential addresses for any seafood lover visiting the Phocean city.

Walked by this place while investigating the local vibes, this one had it all… laid back vibe, smooth healing energy, many locals and a few tourist sitting outside and enjoying their seafood( mainly Fresh Oysters and cooked Prawns)!! What a find! A small place with a small menu. Very good and helpful service made for a delicious and delightful dining experience. Fresh seafood and a board of meats and cheeses all of which was amazing. Make San online reservation and go! You’ll not be disappointed.

It’s very cozy here, with a lovely neighborhood and a charming place itself. The oysters are incredibly delicious, it’s worth choosing the most expensive ones. We also really enjoyed the baked Camembert. Highly recommended.

Entre Terre & Mer is an excellent Restaurant, nestled in the beautiful and vibrant Rue de Panier. Busy and full of life, sitting outside isn’t for those that want a quiet meal, (although we did) Booking in advance would likely remedy that with seating inside. We shared a seafood platter, which was perfect for two. It was supremely delicious, being as fresh as it’s possible to get. The Oysters were big and creamy and sweet, the Prawns crunchy and bursting with flavour and there were a delightful assortment of Cockles and Whelks. The only thing missing was the Crab, which I would love to go back to try. It was extremely busy when we went, and our order got somewhat lost for a bit. But the food was so good, it was an easy mistake to forgive. The staff were also very friendly, and made the effort to speak to us in English, and humoured our broken French. All in all some of the best seafood I have had in France. Well worth a visit, and even a detour.

Rating: ★★★★☆ Entre Terre et Mer is a charming spot with really good food and sweet staff who are always smiling. The location is perfect for enjoying a beautiful sunset while you dine. The seafood and charcuterie are top-notch, and the drinks pair perfectly with the meal. However, be sure to make a reservation—waiting times can be long if you don't. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for great food and a relaxed atmosphere with a view.

A solid spot with a prime location and a lovely view. The seafood overall was fresh and the oysters and sea urchins were definitely a highlight. However, a small critique on the selection: the Gillardeau didn't quite hit the mark compared to what I’ve had in Cassis—just lacked that specific sweetness. Also, the service felt a bit lackluster. The waiters weren't exactly rude, but they seemed exhausted and not particularly welcoming. You’re definitely paying a premium for the area, but if you want good shellfish with a view, it’s worth the stop.
Derrick Chan★☆☆☆☆
⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5) We ordered the most expensive seafood platter for two, a dozen oysters, and the fried mussels. The oysters appeared fresh but were extremely salty and otherwise quite ordinary. The biggest disappointment was the langoustines and prawns. The flesh was mushy, stuck to the shells, and lacked the firm, sweet texture you expect from quality seafood. For a restaurant specializing in seafood, this was very disappointing. Given the premium price, I expected much better quality and freshness. Unfortunately, the seafood platter did not justify the cost, and I left feeling that the ingredients were well below the standard Marseille is known for. I wouldn’t return, and I can’t recommend it if you’re looking for truly high-quality seafood. Didn’t even fish the seafood platter (as seen in photo) because it was so poor quality

This place is right next to the Old Port, so the location is super convenient. The staff are very friendly, and it was actually recommended by locals. I was in a rush to catch my train, so I ordered oysters and seafood to go—and it turned out to be absolutely amazing. Everything was thoughtfully packaged, with lemon, sauce, and wipes included, which made it so easy to enjoy on the train. I really enjoyed the experience, and I can see why so many people say this is a must-try spot. I’ll definitely come back and dine in the restaurant next time I’m in Marseille!
George Chen★★★★★
Excellent oyster, oven-lobster, clams. After lunch I was told by my friend their shrimp is the best, so I may come back again! Server has no smile, but in a busy and hot day, what can you complain? And he is super efficient. Love this place will come back again

We enjoyed an evening on the Vieux-Port of Marseille with a breathtaking sea view. We ordered seafood and it was good, and the service was pleasant. The prices are on the higher end for this type of restaurant.

Great atmosphere and lovely service! Incredible sized portions! Tuna tarte incredible! Mussels average but great price! Cheap wine and good cocktails. Cod was a bit dry but sauce helped

The only highlight here is the view in the old port of Marseille. The food is meh and several tables next to us had food sent back to the kitchen. Our food was ok, but the fries were on the colder side.

Bouillabaisse was full of bold flavour. It filled with big chunks of fish to get that complex body and texture. The beautiful fish stew embodied the true essence of the sea. 🐟 I also enjoyed the Mussels and Fries. (Formule Moules Frites Maison) The mussels were fresh and tasty, they were cooked perfectly with a soft and tender texture. 🙂 The sailor style in a fragrant sweet white wine broth brought out the natural sweetness of the mussels. 😋

We were recommended this place by locals, and it truly lived up to the hype! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and the view of the port was simply breathtaking. The overall experience was exceptional, and I highly recommend it as the best restaurant in town.
Virgil Vincent LAM (Nani)★★★★★
Great place with great view on the Old Port and the cathedral. We chose the bouillabaisse from Fonfon, which is a cheaper version with only 4 fishes instead of 7. It was delicious! In the real restaurant where the recipe comes from, this dish is very expensive, so the one in La Cigale is a great alternative. Desserts are good too, all homemade.

An excellent place for fresh seafood, especially considering its location right next to the Vieux Port in Marseille. We visited once and had a fantastic experience. The prices were very reasonable for the quality offered. We ordered shrimp, oysters, and several other seafood dishes, all of which were fresh and delicious. We also tried the lobster roll served by the restaurant next door. I wasn’t entirely sure what the relationship between the two places was, but everything we had was excellent. We wanted to return a few days later, but unfortunately the restaurant was closed for a few days in July, so we didn’t get the chance. If we ever come back to Marseille, this will definitely be one of the first places we’ll visit again. A special mention to the manager, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable.

AMAZING lobster roll, the French bread, the lemon butter… best ever. This is now my favorite, above (what used to be) my fav New England style lobster roll. Excellent oysters, shrimp, whelks, and beer too. Fun ambiance and outdoor seating. Highly recommended.
Kamil Biegaj★★★★★
Amazing seafood in Marseille! We stopped in Marseille during our cruise and were looking for seafood, but many places were already closed. Luckily, we found La Mer Street Food Coquillages online. Very friendly service. We ordered oysters, fish soup, moules gratinées and the Max Crevette Géante. The oysters were the best I’ve ever had — we ordered them two more times! Highly recommended. Fantastic food and a great experience!

Had to come all the way from California to get the best seafood meal. Excellent service, fabulous and fresh seafood, fish soup was excellent too and it was a rave review place. Owner was friendly and served up quickly. Highly recommend to anyone who wants a fresh and fabulous and unforgettable meal.
Marianne Bauer★★★★★
The fish soup was very flavourful and delicious. I also tried the local oysters for 1€ and loved them. Very friendly service and the Chardonnay for 5€ was pleasantly dry and went well with the food. Big recommendation for affordable yet delicious sea food in Marseille.

Service is as sloppy as it can be, place was empty but waiter was in rush to order the food, an kind of like force us to take the combo 3, that would be too much food. The seafood served from a plastic bag poured over a plate not even fresh seafoods. The table not cleaned. The seafood tasted nothing blend. The drink list has only non alcoholic sortimentet. In France! No wine, only non alcoholic drinks, sweet fruity terrible liquid. The mineral water was drinkable. No - don't visit this place. The top ratings must be fake, or these people never had good seafoods. There a lot places in Marseille are better than that.
Tadeusz Woszczyński★★★★★
Interesting concept for the dinner. You are choosing combo set baked together homar, scallops, crevettes, clams, octopuss and calamaries. Restaurant has a mamy good desserts. Please note that is „zero alcohol” restaurant
Brandon Sorokin★☆☆☆☆
If you want to wait 40 minutes for a water and lemonade then this is the place to go to. Place was empty and we had to ask the server after 20 minutes if she could take our order and then it took another 20 minutes to receive our water. She seemed quite annoyed that we wanted to order after sitting so long in the heat. Food came out shortly after that with no silverware so I had to scrape my oysters out with a knife. Terrible oysters here after tasting delicious oysters in Paris. Quite sad with the marina being so close. Lobster roll was not a lobster roll and tasted more like shredded white fish. Would not recommend
Stefanie Yee★★★★★
We sat on the terrace and enjoyed some delicious and fresh seafood. We ordered the shrimp, the crab soup, the crab roll. All were fresh and delicious. Our sever was super kind. Thank you!
Emily Davis★★★★★
the food was absolutely delicious. We stopped in on our walk by the port & sat outside - great music & great staff. We ordered the taco trio and had one of each type - we couldn’t pick a favorite! Also ordered the crab roll, which was a hit too. And the fries were to die for!! Thanks for a great lunch spot.

We have visited a number of times and have always had a great experience. Our most recent visit was no different - the food, wine and service were all great. We particularly loved the clam dish and always enjoy the oysters. Highly recommend!

For me, one of the best – if not the best – restaurants in Marseille. La Bonne Mer truly lives up to its name. The cuisine is on a Champions League level. Exceptionally fresh fish, excellent beef cuts, oysters and shrimp – everything prepared with outstanding attention to detail. Even the sides, like the mashed potatoes, salad, cauliflower and tomatoes, are crafted with care and precision. This is not just dining, it’s a true culinary experience. The location is also a major highlight. The restaurant is situated in close proximity to the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde, overlooking Marseille and the Mediterranean, which adds a unique and special atmosphere to the entire experience. The ambiance is outstanding. A beautiful interior with high-quality design, warm lighting and great music creates a perfect setting. The bar area is lively and elegant, and the outdoor seating is just as charming and very well maintained. Service is top class – very friendly, professional and attentive. The team explains the menu in detail, gives excellent recommendations and makes you feel genuinely welcome. Communication in both French and English is seamless. The wine selection is excellent — the kind of place where you naturally enjoy more than just one glass, simply because the atmosphere and quality invite you to stay and relax. The open display of fresh products together with the open kitchen concept adds transparency and trust. Even the smallest details stand out – from the presentation to the carefully designed restrooms, everything reflects quality and passion. A place with real potential to expand internationally with this concept and level of cuisine. Highly recommended – I will definitely come back.

Great seafood! This restaurant was on our way to Notre Dame, we stopped by to have some wine amd ended up staying for food. They serve very fresh seafood. Oysters were delicious, shrimps with aioli as well. Great spot for lunch of dinner.

A great spot for seafood in Marseille, definitely worth a visit! The highlight was the bouillabaisse—absolute phenomenal and totally worth the price (9/10). The vongole pasta was also excellent, well-cooked and flavorful (8/10). The only letdown was the fried squid, which was just so-so and a bit disappointing (5/10). The owner and the service staff were lovely and very welcoming. However, the interior leaves something to be desired—it looks a bit neglected and slightly dirty. Overall, a solid 8/10 experience because the main dishes shine. Worth stopping by!
Megan Davies Wykes★★★★★
Excellent food and wine. The waiter (owner?) was also great with our 4-year-old - she got a plate of vegetables and potatoes dauphinois. We went very early (7 pm) on a Friday and there was lots of space. Menu in English as well as French.
Beg Berdan★★★★★
This is an incredible fish resto! The calamari was so tender!! Great wine Brilliant food Incredible service!
Terri Hanson Mead★★★★★
This is definitely the vibe! And the food and service are great. Step away from the water and wander up the street for a real treat.
Saioa Tricquet★★★★☆
Came here as a group of 10 and they had prepared a table for us along one of the sides that gave us enough space to be comfortable. The menu is short but all the dishes are exquisite, with lots of flavour and fresh ingredients. The waiters were very nice and attentive. The price-quality ratio was great, however we shared most of the dishes and didn't have wine, so the bill can be more expensive depending on what you order.

I had the chance to visit on my birthday, and it was a wonderful experience. We ordered a wide variety of seafood, and everything was exceptionally fresh. They also offer wines by the glass—we tried both the orange wine and the red wine available that day, and they were excellent. We were seated outside, which made the experience even better, as we could enjoy the unique atmosphere that makes Marseille so special. It was a truly memorable moment. The service was outstanding throughout. While the prices are on the higher side, they are absolutely justified by the quality of the ingredients and the overall experience. I would happily come back.

We came straight to L'ecaillerie for lunch when we got off the plane to Marsielle and what a fantastic way to start our trip in the city! We had some fantastic house white wine which accompanied the tastiest seafood. We got the oysters and the prawn tartare and the fries to share. The prawn tartare with the prawn head oil was my favourite and my little tip would be to save the bread to mop up the sauce... incredible!! I also love when youre sat outside you can see everything picking their fruit and vegetables at the green grocers next door- so cute! Thank you so much for such a fabulous start to our trip and the tastiest food and great service!

The restaurant is located in the city center in a very touristy and nice area. It was quite busy when we arrived. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The starters were very good, but we especially loved the pizza—it might have been the best pizza we have ever had in our lives. The profiteroles we had for dessert were also amazing. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Marseille.

In a great location of Marseille - and surrounded by many many many touristy trap this place is awesome. If if is touristy it is still amazing. Sitting outside - seeing a lot of french people eating here as well - awesome seafood - just perfect. Reservation is a must. We hope to come back.
Tanya Wanwatanakool★★★★☆
They have a large selection of oysters on their menu. This was definitely the highlight of the meal, briny and delicious! The wood fired mussels were good, but I was disappointed that they weren’t hot. The roasted cod over peas, mint, and broth were light and refreshing. The eggs with mayonnaise seem to be a popular French appetizer, but personally not for me. Lastly, the tuna carpaccio was fine. The service is exceptional and I was super thankful to the front of house for seating us despite not having a reservation. The indoor restaurant seating was very pleasant as it gets rather cold at night in Marseille.
Simon Lee★★★★★
I had dinner at Coquille a few weeks ago, and it still makes me smile to think about it! I grabbed the last available table on a busy Sunday evening. The staff are incredibly welcoming and professional. When entering, you’ll see an incredibly beautiful selection of fruits de mer. I ordered some Leucate oysters to start and a whole dorade to follow. The oysters were absolutely delicious!! However, the dorade was just utterly perfect. I tend to eat one every week or so, but the one here really was in another league. Just mouth-wateringly delicious. Very fresh, cooked just right (without losing moisture or flavour, but also not undercooked either). Served with aioli: Perfection! The place is a real gem in what can be a very touristic area. Will happily return!
Mariana Varela★★★★★
So delicious! I eat alone and ordered the sardines and the mussels, with a side of green salad, and it was more than enough. The price was very reasonable. The staff was friendly, especially at the beginning of my visit. I would definitely come back for the food!

Excellente surprise !

Preferred the outside marketplace to the restaurant. Service was good and the sea urchins were the best I saw in Marseille. They were the highlight for me as well as the fact that you can order each oyster one by one literally try 10 different options. Nice excuse to get out of the city center too

Literally outdoor on the street on the sidewalk. But in front of their main restaurant. Very fresh seafood, see urgent. First time I tried unbelievable. The service great, atmosphere perfect way better than most fine dining restaurants I have ever been to. The seafood was so fresh is unbelievable. Definitely going to come back here for dinner. I might try the restaurant but would rather eat where I just had everything on the street.

Seafood platter is really fresh during this season. If you’re oyster lover. Must come-by for experience.

We wanted to find a spot that would serve a Fruits de Mer platter, but for some reason a lot of places were closed on Monday evening, so I found this spot on Google Maps and decided to venture out beyond the Old Port area. Being American, I made us a 7:15pm reservation. When we arrived the restaurant was empty, with only two tables occupied… my wife started to get a bit nervous. But we then remembered that any reservation before 8 is a very American thing to do! Around 8pm the restaurant began filling up with locals; we were at the right spot! Being out of the Old Port area, we didn’t pay tourist pricing and probably had the best lobster we’ve had in a long time. The service staff is very friendly and interacted with us in English. They were having fun and were very attentive to us in explaining the menu. If you’re in Marseille, this spot is a “Can’t Miss”!

Update April 2025 Same menu no change but service has changed a little bit, food is OK but not wow anymore. Asking for reservations when restaurant is not full. ----------------- I recently had the pleasure of dining at this seafood restaurant, and my experience was a mixed feeling of delights and some disappointments. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was inviting, with a maritime charm that set the stage for a memorable meal. The younger server who attended to us was an absolute delight, providing attentive and friendly service that enhanced our dining experience. His knowledge of the menu were excellent and his good attitudeadding addee a personal touch to our evening. However, the same could not be said for the other server, whose carelessness left something to be desired. While he was not rude, his lack of attention was noticeable and detracted from the overall experience. Now, onto the star of the show – the food. Every dish we tried was a testament to the chef's skill and dedication to quality ingredients. Each bite was a mix of flavors, showcasing the freshness of the seafood and the creativity of the kitchen. And let's not forget about the dessert – it was the perfect finale to our meal, leaving us craving more.

To be honest, the bouillabaisse did not quite meet my expectations, and the main appeal of the restaurant seemed to be its beautiful harbor view rather than the food. That said, the fried whitebait was really excellent and stood out as the highlight of the meal.

The spaghetti with scallops was delicious. In the bouillabaisse, there were several types of fish mixed together, but some of them in this dish had a slightly fishy taste

A French seafood restaurant on the old seaport of Marseille right next to the Miramar restaurant (famously known for their bouillabaisse), also serving bouillabaisse and other seafood dishes. Our waiter was funny and friendly, but the food was mediocre and overpriced. The bouillabaisse was ok but not something we would order again. The start of the grilled seafood plate was the gumbo shrimp, which was so flavorful and sweet. The side salad we ordered had a human hair in it. This place felt a bit like a tourist trap to us. It’s convenient for those who are visiting the old port of Marseille but there are better and cheaper options if you venture out of the touristy areas.

During our visit to Marseille, we made a stop at this place specifically to try the famous bouillabaisse soup. The location itself is quite pleasant, offering a nice view of the harbor, and the overall atmosphere is delightful. The waitstaff were exceptionally friendly and polite, providing a welcoming experience. We opted for the bouillabaisse for two, priced at 69 euros per person. The portions were impressively generous, served in two rounds. The first round consisted of just the soup, while the second included both the fish and the soup. The food was enjoyable, although it became apparent to someone familiar with the taste of truly fresh fish that what we had was not as fresh as it could have been. However, it was still acceptable. Overall, despite the slight disappointment with the freshness of the fish, our experience at this place was pleasant, and we were able to sample Marseille’s renowned bouillabaisse in a nice setting with friendly service.

We came here for the bouillabaisse. It was expensive, €39 each and didn’t include any shellfish. The fish still had skin and there were many bones. The portion was very large. The other dish we ordered was a white fish “Merlin”, very bland and nothing special. Also expensive. We sat with a view of the port and service was very good. Total €138 euros for 3 people.

I got a fish soup, an octopus salad and a wolffish (Loup). The fish soup was incredible; this is my first time having this dish, and the combination of the bread, the sauce, the cheese and the soup was perfect. The portion of the octopus salad was very generous- the salad was also well seasoned The fish was rather bland- might not order it the next time, but the waiter was very kind to cut the fish nicely in half. Will definitely visit this place again!!

Very very good service! Owner was very nice and friendly, and the fish soup was soooo good. Came with croutons and homemade garlic butter that we wiped out. First time eating raw mussels, most were good but some were a bit fishy, not sure if it’s just cause we weren’t used to the taste! The stuffed squid with rice was also very delicious. Will definitely come back again if I’m in Marseille!

When we went in, we were quite skeptical as the decor of the restaurant looked like something that’s been trendy 20 years ago, but what we ate was phenomenal. We had delicious “huitres speciales francois” and after that grilled sea bass with salad. The sea bass was the best one I ever had (no doubt about it), consistency like butter, juicy and tender that I almost couldn’t comprehend it. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem!

Amazing welcome by Madame François in this seafood place directly from the boat! All sea fruits are oh-so-fresh. Special mention to fish soup.

We came to this restaurant hoping to have something to eat and drink. Although the kitchen had not yet started serving its full menu, the staff warmly welcomed us and kindly explained which dishes were already available. They also offered us a selection of drinks and invited us to choose any table we liked. We chose a lovely table on the terrace. From the very first moment, we felt genuinely welcome. The staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to help.Everything was excellent—the food and the service. We truly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience.

Reserved for 14:30, got the table at 14:50 while waiting with babies in the cold outside. Food was good but bouillabaisse was warm not hot and after 30 min no service we gave up on desserts… high potential but service should say no and reduce the covers per shift! Tables were left dirty next to us throughout the entire lunch…

We came specifically for the bouillabaisse and were absolutely not disappointed—it was rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Dining outside on the terrace with a stunning view of the harbor made the experience even more memorable. The friendly, attentive service was the final touch that turned a great meal into a perfect one. Highly recommend!

A Hidden Gem on the Edge of Marseille – Perfect for Seafood Lovers If you find yourself at the end of the Marseille coastline, just where the Calanques National Park begins, don’t miss the chance to visit this charming little seafood restaurant. It’s a true hidden gem, offering a genuinely local experience. The menu focuses heavily on fresh, local fish dishes, prepared with the authentic flavors of the region. I had one of the best seafood meals I’ve ever tasted, perfectly paired with a glass of excellent French wine. To top it off, I tried a local shot that everyone seemed to be enjoying – it had a taste similar to Ouzo, strong yet refreshing, and a perfect finish to a delicious meal. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, making the experience even better. And the view? Simply stunning. The restaurant overlooks a small, picturesque harbor, adding to the relaxed and authentic atmosphere. If you love fresh seafood, local flavors, and a genuine French dining experience, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

This was my favorite restaurant during a four day visit to Marseille. Amazing fresh, super tasty, and local food - best oysters I’ve had in years - and the cooked dishes were delicious! Super fun atmosphere- the whole restaurant was seafood themed down to every detail including the plates and cutlery. One of the funnest parts of going here is that the owner personally serves you - including explaining the menu (in french or English) to each table. He’s funny and friendly! The menu changes daily depending on what’s available. Everything we ate was delicious (five dishes total for two people).

Fantastic food in an amazing fun restaurant. This is the place for fresh seafood cooked in an imaginative way. The owner Fabien is great fun. Very highly recommended if you’re in Marseille. If you’re English like I am, be prepared for him to have a laugh with you if you speak French as poorly as I do 😂

This place works with local fishermen to get their supply of seafood, and you can really taste the quality! The oysters were sooooo good, and the calamari dish was amazing! The guy who runs the place is also really friendly and fun, so the atmosphere inside is lovely. One of my favourite meals in Marseille!

The oysters were soooo fresh. Everything was amazing. Will be a go to spot everytime I'm in Marseille as the menu is based off the daily catch of the local fishermen

Having read previous reviews of this restaurant, I was expecting great food and, maybe, a ”grumpy” proprietor. Well, I definitely got the former but thankfully not the latter. As a lone diner, I was treated warmly, kindly and with great humour. No hint of grumpiness! Lunch here was a memorable experience thanks to the aforementioned proprietor, the quirky space and the authentic, imaginative menu. I cannot wait to return to Marseilles so I can eat in this wonderful place again.

We generally enjoyed our time here. The food was nice, though it was a little too heavily salted for our liking, so we had to rate it a little lower because of this. It was easy for us to get a table here but it was a very hot day, so the area we were sitting in (outdoor seating area on street separated by plastic tarpaulin) was very hot. There was a fan being used by the restaurant, but this provided minimal relief. Nevertheless, the staff were generally nice overall and the food gave us a chance to eat some products specific to the Marseille region, so we were satisfied with our choice. It was lovely to sit along the old port road and look out at the life passing by. We even had a beautiful view of the Notre-Dame from our seats. We enjoyed ourselves.

A very nice restaurant with honest prices and excellent value for money. It definitely does not feel like another tourist trap. The food was really tasty. We especially enjoyed the “sea and land” platter — it was generous, beautifully served and full of flavour. The seafood and the sea bream were very fresh, juicy, delicate and perfectly seasoned. The marinated octopus salad deserves a special mention — it was excellent. The crème brûlée was also exactly as it should be. On top of that, the service was very friendly and helpful, especially the waitress who looked after us. Overall, a very pleasant experience and a place I would gladly recommend.

We reserved a table for a Sunday afternoon. We were 5 diners speaking both English and French and our server was absolutely charming, professional, and patient with the language barrier and the many questions we had. The food was really good and the location on the port is pretty and not too noisy.

We didn't have a reservation on a busy night for a party of six and the staff helped us to get a table. Food were delicious - the freshest seafood we've had in a while. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended, 10/10. Bonus for dessert because our son devoured the house chocolate mousse (the tart tartine was my fave).

Nice place for lunch, warm service, great food, beautiful coastal view. You can pick your own fish. I had one of the daily fresh selections and wasn't disappointed. Served simply grilled with some delicious eggplant and sauces on the side, olives as an appetizer and a bottle of Badoit mineral water.

This is a difficult one for me. This was the first time in a fish restaurant in France, so I am basing the following on fish restaurants I have been in other countries such as Spain, Italy, Ireland, Albania, Greece, Cyprus and other: From the outside, it did not look like much, but once inside, it was worth driving in traffic for an hour. Nice atmosphere, staff were great and the view was breathtaking. We started with drinks, nothing special there. The mains were what we held our breath for. We asked for the catch of the day. It was seabream. It was a large fish so it was for 2 people. The plate was nicely presented. The extras on the plate were delicious. Now, the fish. At first glance, it looked great, but when started eating I found out it was full of bones and the skin was not discaled. Not sure if this is was a French thing, but this was the first time in an above-average restaurant I was served a filet of fish full with bones and skin with scales. I have to admit, it did bring down my enthusiasm. I did not enjoy the fish as much as I was hoping I would. Pudding was nice, chocolate based. The food being served around us looked fanatic. So I would order something esle instead if i am ever back there. Because of this, I would rate it 3.5.

Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Seafood Experience

Dining in Marseille requires a slightly different strategy than in other French cities, particularly when it comes to seafood. The sheer volume of restaurants with ocean views can be overwhelming, and the difference between a good meal and a transcendent one often comes down to preparation and timing.

To help you navigate the culinary landscape like a local, we have compiled a few practical rules of thumb to guide your reservation choices and ordering habits.

1. Understand the Bouillabaisse Investment

Authentic bouillabaisse is expensive—often between €60 and €90 per person. This is non-negotiable if it is made correctly. The high price covers the use of specific rockfish (like rascasse) that are difficult to catch and cannot be substituted. If you see a “bouillabaisse” on a menu for €20, it is likely a simple fish soup (soupe de poisson). Save up for the real thing or skip it entirely.

2. Follow the “Vieux-Port Rule”

Generally, the restaurants directly on the eastern quay of the Vieux-Port (facing the masts) prioritize volume over quality. While they are fine for a morning coffee or a glass of pastis, you should walk at least two blocks inland or to the quieter side streets for your seafood. The best restaurants are often tucked away on side streets like Rue Saint-Saëns or behind the Opera house.

3. Respect the “R” Months for Shellfish

While modern aquaculture has made oysters safer year-round, the French tradition of eating oysters primarily in months containing the letter “R” (September through April) still applies for quality. During these months, the oysters are plump and briny. In the hot summer months, they can be milky and watery. Trust the seasons.

4. Order the “Catch of the Day” Whole

When you see “Poisson du Jour” or “Poisson à la plancha,” ask for it whole rather than filleted. A whole fish cooked on the bone retains its moisture and flavor far better. Do not be afraid to get your hands dirty; it is the Marseille way. The waiters will usually fillet it tableside if you ask, but the presentation of the whole fish is part of the experience.

5. Don’t Skip the “Hors-d’œuvre de la Mer”

While everyone focuses on the main course, the true test of a Marseille seafood kitchen is often in the starters. Look for sea urchin (oursins), tiny raw clams (palourdes), or “tellines” (small pink clams sautéed in garlic and parsley). These small plates showcase the freshness of the local waters and the chef’s restraint.

The beauty of dining in Marseille lies in its lack of pretense. You can arrive straight from the beach, dusted in salt and sand, and sit down to a plateau of oysters that were in the water just hours earlier. The city’s identity is inextricably linked to the sea, and the restaurants on this list represent the very best of that maritime heritage.

Whether you choose a high-end tasting menu in the 7th arrondissement or a plastic chair on the port in the Estaque neighborhood, take your time. Linger over the meal, watch the boats come in, and let the rhythm of the Mediterranean dictate your pace. Bon appétit.
