Stumbling out of the narrow, shadowed lanes of the Gothic Quarter and into the vast plaza of the Cathedral of Barcelona is an assault on the senses. The sheer scale of the stonework, the murmur of tourists, and the distant chime of bells create an atmosphere that demands a moment of pause. Yet, as you stand in the shadow of this medieval giant, a more primal need often takes over: hunger.
There is a particular magic to breaking bread within earshot of such history. The air around the Cathedral is thick with the scent of history, but it is also, if you know where to look, perfumed with the scent of butter, sugar, and freshly pulled espresso. The area is a labyrinth of culinary treasures, but the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming.
You could easily fall into a tourist trap with stale pastries and inflated prices, but that would be a disservice to the rich gastronomic heritage of Catalonia. Instead, you need a curated path to the flakiest croissants, the most traditional ensaïmadas, and the richest hot chocolate the Ciutat Vella has to offer.
The historic center is not just a museum; it is a living, breathing neighborhood where bakers arrive before dawn to perfect their dough. These artisans blend French techniques with Catalan traditions, creating a bakery scene that is both sophisticated and deeply comforting.
Knowing where to find the best baked goods transforms a simple coffee break into a highlight of your trip. Whether you need a quick energy boost before climbing to the cathedral roof or a quiet place to rest your feet, the perfect bakery is likely just around the corner.
We have walked the cobblestones, sampled the sourdough, and inspected the crumb structure so you don’t have to waste time on mediocrity. Here is our definitive guide to the sweetest and most savory sanctuaries near the Barcelona Cathedral.

Very nice and elaborated pastries.
They have a lot of different flavors and shapes. The staff is very kind and professional.
The dark moon was nice very chocolate, with a good mix of all the flavors from the external part to the inside mousse.
The pistachio was interesting. The pistachio mousse with the crusty pistachio was very good. Not sweet and feel very good. However the inside marmalade of orange, passionfruit and yuzu was good on its own while the mix of this flavor with pistachio together was not the best mix i was able to test. The outside shape was very good, white chocolate with valrhona chocolate for sure.
Anyway, taste and flavors are very personal, hence it is best for you to try and make your own opinion
In all case this is a very good pastry for Barcelona, price are on the upper side as you can expect for this kind of work.
The pistachio (festuc) was 14 euros
The dark moon was 9 euros
The cheesecake was 9 euros
The 10 blueberries financier were 13,50 euros
The kouign amann was 2,30 euros
The roll of pistachio and orange was 7,50 euros
As well to take in mind, if you order through delivery service app like Glovo, the price are 10% more expensive than public price in the shop. Probably they do that to save gross margin on the Glovo commission fees. Not very ethical but why not, most restaurants seems to do that.

We visited Patisserie Hofmann with pretty high expectations, given its popularity. The location is excellent and very convenient—easy to find while walking around the area. Another major plus is the pricing; for such a well-known brand, the prices are completely reasonable and affordable. Service was also on point; the staff worked quickly, so you don't have to wait in line for too long, which is always a pleasant surprise.
Visually, the pastries and cupcakes look absolutely stunning. They immediately catch your eye with their beautiful presentation, vibrant colors, and rich toppings, making you expect an explosion of flavor. Unfortunately, that's exactly where the disappointment lay. The cupcakes themselves were quite dry on the inside, even though they look incredibly moist and juicy at first glance. The texture definitely didn't live up to their promising appearance.
The main downside, however, is the space. The interior is extremely cramped and tiny, with only about three available seats. Because of this, it's almost impossible to sit down comfortably to enjoy a cup of coffee or eat your treats on-site. It feels much more like a grab-and-go concept, which slightly takes away from the overall experience. Great presentation and location, but the dry taste and lack of seating leave you with rather mixed feelings.

Edible art at its finest!!! DELICIOUS! Would make an incredible gift! Beautifully ornate, immaculate presentation that comes in an aesthetic gift box and bag. Honestly the most delicious desserts!!! I tried the “Limited Edition” and the “Festuc” (Pistachio). WOW AMAZING! I loved both! Absolutely worth the money. I got these as takeout to go.

The pastries at Hofmann Bakery were the best I’ve ever had. They were incredibly flaky, soft, and delicious. My favorites were the pistachio and orange pastries, and I also tried the plain one. Everything was amazing—highly recommended! 😋

Incredible pastries and patisserie, kind of glad it's here otherwise it would be taking my money regularly! I ordered a cheesecake croissant and mascapone croissant (recommended by the lady as it's their best seller) they both were filled perfectly. The cheesecake had a lovely balance between the tartness of the fruit against the cream filling. The mascapone croissant I could fully understand why it's their best seller, again not too sweet and lovely balance (I like to warm my pastries up) so made it extra special. I also ordered dark moon and romantic and honestly such beautiful patisserie. The romantic was my favourite out of the two but it brought back childhood flavours for me. Definitely recommend the romantic if you like white chocolate and raspberry. I really wanted to try the strawberries and cream as well because that looked delicious!

The pastries were absolutely amazing! We loved them so much that we ended up visiting several of their locations across Barcelona.
The only small mix-up was that I ordered a chai latte but was served a matcha latte instead. Surprisingly, it didn't take away from the experience at all—in fact, thanks to them, I've started to think that matcha isn't as terrible as I always believed haha! Highly recommended.

I visit this place nearly every day. It's a 15 min walk from me. They have the best coffee in the area. Period. And it's one of the better bakeries I have tried. Anywhere. I am a baker so I am super picky. I've tried nearly everything they have and it's all incredible. The cardamomo twist was my favorite... Until I tried the Mico. My 11 year old gets a canela twist every time. My husband says the croissant is one of the best he's ever had. Their focaccia is also amazing, as is their bread which I bring home and make toast and sandwiches with. I also enjoy that you can see them baking in the kitchen. The whole place is warm and inviting.

I’m a bit ashamed to say this, but this was my favorite food experience in Barcelona.
And I’m ashamed because it’s not really a traditional Catalan bakery. But I’m a bakery nerd. I really, really love good baked goods. Baking is such a universal human thing. It’s been around for thousands of years. It’s not a trend. You either know how to bake or you don’t.
Being a good baker in terms of taste, texture, and mouthfeel is not easy. It’s pure craftsmanship. Anyone can open a waffle shop or a restaurant, but starting a proper bakery is a completely different level of commitment.
And I don’t think it’s disrespectful to say that Origo is clearly inspired by Scandinavia. They even have kardemommesnurrer, although with cinnamon in this case, which is very Swedish. And in Scandinavia, we’re quite spoiled with high-level bakeries.
That said, Origo is definitely one of the best bakeries I’ve been to.
Everything is baked in-house, which you can see through the open bakery setup and the windows into the kitchen. Honestly, I wish I could have tried everything on the menu.
We tried four different things.
We started with the vanilla roll. It was really good, but actually the weakest of the four. It had a slightly drier texture compared to the others.
Then we had the croissant. This was probably the best croissant I’ve ever had in my life. It looked beautiful, which already tells you about the craftsmanship. The layering was incredible, the taste was great, and the texture was absolutely on point.
Then we had the Miko. I honestly don’t even know what a Miko is, but it was insane. Super moist, slightly crispy, beautifully layered, and with incredible flavor combinations. We couldn’t get enough of it.
We also tried a square piece, some kind of Catalan-inspired pastry with a crème brûlée center. Also incredible. Soft, flaky, and just really, really good.
I honestly don’t care much about the interior design, the cement floors, or how Instagrammable a place is. That doesn’t matter to me. What matters is the quality, and the level of baking here is incredibly high.
This is one of my biggest recommendations in Barcelona.
My girlfriend and I actually discussed the fact that it’s not very traditional, but I don’t think that matters. Baking is inherently traditional no matter where you are. And this place just does it really, really well.
I went twice, so yes, I might be a bit biased. But honestly, it lives up to the hype.
One thing I really want to add, though.
Since they’re clearly taking inspiration from Scandinavia, I think they’re missing one small but very important piece.
Up here, it’s incredibly common that a bakery offers both something sweet and something salty. And I don’t mean focaccia or pizza slices. That’s not really the same thing.
Nothing beats going to a bakery and getting a sweet pastry and then something simple and salty on the side.
I really think they should consider doing a proper sourdough bun. I’m sure their sourdough skills are already incredible. Serve it with butter, maybe even whipped butter, and then top it with slices of a good aged cheese. Something salty, creamy, maybe even something local and Catalan.
Where I’m from, we call it a “bolle med ost”. Every bakery has it. It’s simple, but it’s perfect.
And honestly, I really missed that here. The sweet options are amazing, but I wanted that balance. Something salty to go with it.
Since they’re already leaning into Scandinavian inspiration, this feels like a complete no-brainer to me. If they added something like that, it would take the whole experience to another level.
Harald★★★★★
The focaccia was very well made 👍🏻 also the pain au chocolate tasted super fresh. It would be great to get some stuffed croissants as well. To sit in, the shop is rather small, but there is a view in the baking room 👍🏻

Very nice design wise place but oberpriced bakery and nothing special. People are working are not paying attention, they have anyways too much people.

The treat of the staff. Treat you and look at you like [bad]. I tried to come several times.
Also, if i want to have just coffee - not bakery - why i have to keep all the queue? I think it’d be more logical to have separate queue for quick orders.
Upd:
Have it a chance since I live one block away. Was coming few times and felt fine.
Today again this mess with service. 1) one lady before me, payed already and wanted to buy coffee pack - the cashier made her to stay all the line again 🤨 2) also, somehow people behind me ordered coffee equal to me but were serviced first. Idk, I feel there is a big room for improvement in this place, I felt like Saturday mood was spoiled.

We had breakfast here every day of our stay, and everything we ordered was always delicious, with helpful staff. Several types of flaky empanadas, many crusty roll sandwiches, and so many pastries. They open earlier than anything else nearby, and are highly recommended.

Dropped in to grab a bite on a long day out. We tried the Xuixo De Crema and smoked salmon croissant. The Xuixo tasted very good, the dough was fluffy and the cream inside was not too sweet. The sandwich was also pretty good. The smoked salmon was delicious but there was not too much on the sandwich. The croissant was also not overly flaky due to being premade. Overall a nice place to try, but you don't get too much food for the price.

We discovered this bakery and we were really surprised by the taste of all sweet product we bought there. They were amazing honestly, fresh and softy I can say it's the best place for me at this moment so far to eat homemade pastries in Barcelona, will visit it in next time in Barcelona. The best pastry for us was Barratxo, even we came back next day to buy it again 🙂
Can you say something more about it, how to find some information of what is it and how to prepare this one.
Thanks 🙂

Surprised at the positive reviews here. Visited on a Saturday morning, looking for a fresh croissant and a coffee.
Was shocked that the croissant was old and stale. I had two bites and left the rest. Found a fresh one at Pans and Co. less than a block away. Ironic that I was looking for a small local place and ended up at a chain. Oh well.

One of our favorite bakeries and a place we keep coming back to. The pastries here are excellent, and the croissants are flaky, buttery, and consistently fresh every time we visit.
We've been here many times and the quality has always been very consistent, which is one of the reasons we return so often.

If I could do it all over again, I’d buy two of everything.
The ensaymadas were unbelievably light and fluffy, with delicate, airy layers and just the right amount of sweetness. The xuixos were just as memorable - crisp on the outside, filled generously with smooth cream, and not overly sweet.

I ordered a croissant normal and a ensatmada cabell d’angel, both of them are really soft, the cabell d’angel has really nice filling. Absolutely love it, they’re just nicest pastry i’ve ever tried.
Huilin Ni★★★★★
The prices are a bit higher than a usual bakery, there's usually a pretty long line, but the wait was definitely worth it because you can tell how their products are handmade and very fresh. The chocolate inside the croissants we had wasn't melted properly (first time it happened), but the ensaimada was delicious! So good! Would love to go back and try their other pastries, they all look super tasty.

What a hidden gem this place turned out to be! I tried the ensaimadas with cream and absolutely fell in love. Yes, I really mean it! The staff were warm and friendly, and everything I tasted was spot on. It’s a fantastic bakery overall. I didn’t get the chance to try the bread, but it smelled incredible. Definitely something I’d go back for. It was so good it made me want to move there, just so I could eat their ensaimadas every single day!

Maybe I should have lowered mt expectations, the bakery is really nice and well stocked and the shop assistant was nice and helpful. But really disapointing crema catalana. The cream was excellent and the cake lighr and fluffy but the bottom was burnt and that aftertaste was really unpleasant. They shouldn’t have sale this to customers sorry.

I had an incredibly awful experience at this patisserie. After spending the day exploring Barcelona, I decided to stop in for an espresso. Unfortunately, the barista coughed into her hand so vehemently and then proceeded to grab my cup to make my coffee. I was appalled by her lack of care and couldn’t believe what I witnessed.
Feeling shocked and uncomfortable, I found it difficult to express my concerns to her. I didn't want to take the coffee but was unsure how to demand a change without feeling embarrassed. It’s common sense that one shouldn’t cough into their hand before serving food or drinks, yet this seemed lost on her. I ultimately asked for the coffee to be poured into a paper cup instead, still in disbelief over the situation.
Although I encountered below average service throughout Barcelona and everything was heavily overpriced and quite low quality, this patisserie truly took the cake for the most unacceptable experience.

While looking for a traditional spot serving Spanish breakfast we stumbled upon this small-sized restaurant/cafe. We ordered a traditional egg/potato tortilla as well as a raspberry croissant. The portions weren't large however the food they served us was of high quality. All the dishes seemed to be freshly prepared on-site.
The tortilla was tender and very fluffy but the croissant was extremely good! In fact one of the best we've ever had. It could be slightly less sweet for my personal taste. We were also given extra tomato bread to share free of charge which was also quite tasty.
The staff at the till was helpful and spoke good English. The local offers both seating inside and outside. It isn't too spacious but it's clean.

I had this bakery on my radar before even arriving in Barcelona, and I am so glad it was just a short walk away! As a huge sweet tooth, I naturally gravitated here, and they truly have a little bit of everything. From chocolates and candies to croissants and heavenly cream-filled pastries, the list just goes on. They even sell larger portions and whole cakes if you need treats for a celebration.
The shop is very much a quick grab-and-go situation, making it super easy to pop in. What really stood out was the care they put into the packaging. They wrap your treats up so beautifully and even give you a convenient little handle to carry everything.
I absolutely have to stop by another day before I leave (twist my arm!). Honestly, just pick whatever looks tasty to you, and I promise it will be incredible. Check this place out. It is totally worth the stop and truly the place to be for sweets!

Saw this charming bakery as I was coming out of the metro station and I had some time to kill, so I decided to try it out.
What an amazing idea that was because I was blessed with the best dang pastries in town! I ordered a chocolate croissant that was crispy on the outside, but soft and frail on the inside. It was completely (thankfully a generous amount) filled with chocolate! I also ordered the famous xuixo de crema. This was hands down my favorite pastry I’ve had on my trip to Barcelona thus far. I got some other pastry I didn’t quite catch the name of, but it was delicious nonetheless!
This is definitely a place worth visiting, and will be somewhere I’ll find my self at again.

If you’re anywhere near the Gothic Quarter and even remotely hungry, Forns del Pi is the kind of place that pulls you in before you even realize what happened.
This bakery feels like a perfect mix of old-school charm and modern indulgence. The moment you step inside, you’re hit with that dangerous combination of fresh pastry smell and “I’ll just take one thing”… which quickly turns into three.
The selection is seriously impressive. From buttery, flaky croissants (the kind that leave evidence all over your shirt) to generously filled sandwiches that actually look like the photos — rare these days. But the real stars? The churros. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and basically impossible to eat just one without immediately reaching for the next. If you see the chocolate-covered ones… don’t think, just point.
What’s also great is that it’s not just a tourist trap. You’ll notice locals casually grabbing their morning coffee and pastry, which is always a good sign. The vibe is relaxed, service is quick, and everything feels fresh and made with care.
Perfect spot for breakfast, a quick coffee break, or a “I’ll just sit here and pretend I live in Barcelona” moment.
Just one warning: come hungry… and maybe skip stepping on the scale later that day.

Found this café (local chain) propably on our second trip to Barcelona. Been going there every morning, every morning i say, ever since!
Their coffee, "Bikinis" and croissants are the best fuel for our miles long walking days in the city.

The only café which were open at 7 am. The food was OK but definitely not the best. The toilet was disgusting and didn't have a toilet seat so you had the sit directly on the porcelain with pee on it.

Most amazing tarta de fructe! Was fortunate to get one as the second and third time they were gone - Highly recommend! Was super juicy and the pastry was just perfect. The apple was also good! This is a must visit in Barcelona!

I had a marzipan croissant here, and it was actually quite good.
Not really much to complain about. It was nice and soft, and you could really taste the marzipan. I thought it was quite delicious.
They also had a nice selection overall. I came pretty late in the afternoon, but there was still a good amount to choose from.
Simple and solid experience.

Read that this was one of the oldest patisseries in Barcelona and saw lots of great reviews, so I had to try it. It’s a charming rustic little bakery, both inside and out. Wide selection of pastries and sweet treats. We ordered the crème custard croissant, pistachio croissant, and a chocolate one. They were nice, but didn’t quite live up to the hype of being the best in town. The lady behind the counter was lovely and recommended the peanut balls, their most popular sweet treat which was ok.
Limited seating so we had the pastries to go. Service was warm and welcoming overall.

Probably the best croissant I've ever had in my life! We stumbled upon this place as we were in the area and wanted to have a break. We had the custard and pistachio cream and was so impressed by both of them that we got another one for home - the almond which was also exceptional! The place has vintage vibes as if it's from another era which only elevates it's atmosphere. They were constantly baking in the front oven which made the place smell incredible! Coffee was nice and can be enjoyed too but it's definitely not the highlight. The service was also great and helpful. Honestly you need to try this place and you will certainly want to come back!

Absolutely loved this place. Tried a couple of the sweet and savoury pastries. Lovely homemade taste. Been in Barcelona 5 days and tried many local delicacies but for snacks / light treats on-the-go, this actually tops them all! Very friendly proprietor too. Well done Italy (unexpected)

Donatella Salento Bakery is a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away in a small curving street in the Gothic Quarter - but it is well worth a stop. An authentic Southern Italian experience with Puglian products (including fresh pasticciotti) and serving delicious Quarta Caffe, which is also available to purchase in ground bags, as Donatella is one of Quarta's official resale partners (and the only one in Barcelona).
The owner was very kind when I came to ask about the coffee after she had only just reopened the shop after some time away, and I will definitely be coming back when they are fully restocked.

I had a pizza and a cafe with milk, total was 5:85 and absolutely worth it and I really loved the atmosphere and the location, the lady was lovely and great with hospitality,
Definitely visit again!

This shop was an amazing!! Great food and right below our flat for our stay. Amazing service and super friendly every time we visited. If you see a line, it’s worth the wait! We went every day for either breakfast or a late night snack. If you get a chance, definitely try the cheesecake, tiramisu or the cannoli. I’ll be back to Barcelona just for that!!!

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Bakery
The sheer density of bakeries near the Cathedral means you can find exactly what you crave if you know how to look. Whether you are a purist seeking a perfect baguette or a sweet tooth hunting for the ultimate pastry, a little strategy goes a long way. Here are some insider tips to help you navigate the flour-dusted streets of the Gothic Quarter like a local.
Look for the "Forn" Tradition
In Catalonia, a traditional bakery is often called a "Forn" (oven). These establishments typically bake their bread on-site using slow fermentation methods. If you see the word "Forn" in the name, you are usually guaranteed a higher quality of bread than a standard coffee shop that simply reheats frozen goods.
Timing is Everything
If you want the true bakery experience, go early. Bakers pull the first trays of croissants and bread out of the oven between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. By late afternoon, many of the most popular items will be sold out, and the bread will have lost its crackling crust. For the freshest bites, follow the smell of baking bread in the morning.
Embrace the Local Specialties
Don’t just order a standard croissant; try a "Xuixo" (a deep-fried, sugar-coated pastry filled with crema catalana) or a slice of "Coca de Sant Joan" if in season. Asking for local specialties not only gives you a better taste of Catalonia but often signals to the baker that you appreciate their craft beyond tourist fare.
Check for Butter vs. Lard
If you are vegetarian or keep a specific diet, note that many traditional Spanish pastries, including some croissants and ensaïmadas, are made with pork lard (saïm) rather than butter. The good news is that many modern artisan bakeries near the Cathedral have shifted to high-quality butter. If it matters to you, ask: "¿Está hecho con mantequilla?" (Is it made with butter?).
Don’t Skip the Savory
While pastries get the glory, the true test of a baker is often the humble bread roll or savory tart. Many bakeries in the Gothic Quarter offer incredible "bikinis" (toasted ham and cheese sandwiches) or mini empanadas. These savory options are often the most satisfying and budget-friendly lunch options in the tourist-heavy center.
The beauty of the area surrounding Barcelona Cathedral is that it rewards the curious. While the grand facades and historic stones capture your eyes, let your nose guide you down the side streets. Taking the time to step into a small, family-run oven rather than a chain café offers a moment of authentic connection to the city’s daily rhythm.
As you continue your journey through the Gothic Quarter, let the warmth of a fresh loaf or the sweetness of a local pastry serve as your fuel. In a city defined by its architecture, the structure of a perfect sourdough or the delicate layers of a mille-feuille are masterpieces in their own right—and they are deliciously fleeting.
