Wandering the narrow medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter works up an appetite unlike anywhere else in Barcelona. The area around the city’s iconic Cathedral is a sensory maze of history, stone facades, and hidden plazas, but it is also a fiercely competitive culinary battleground. With so many tourist traps serving overpriced paella and stale pastries, finding a genuinely good breakfast or brunch spot requires local insight rather than blind luck. You want a meal that matches the magic of your surroundings, whether that means a flaky croissant, a hearty eggs Benedict, or a traditional Catalan esmorzar de forquilla.
The evolution of brunch culture in Barcelona has been remarkable over the last decade. What was once a strictly late-morning affair of coffee and a pastry has transformed into a full-blown weekend ritual featuring specialty coffee, avocado toast, and international flavors. Yet, the neighborhood surrounding the Cathedral manages to balance this modern trend with its deep-rooted traditions. Here, you can just as easily find a century-old granja serving churros and hot chocolate as you can a trendy Australian-style café plating vibrant smoothie bowls.
Location matters immensely when you are navigating the labyrinthine streets of the Barri Gòtic. The best breakfast spots near the Cathedral are often tucked away in small squares or down unassuming alleys, away from the heavy foot traffic of Via Laietana. The proximity to such a major landmark means that quality can vary wildly from one door to the next. Knowing which terraces offer a peaceful morning view of the square and which ones charge a premium solely for the real estate is key to a satisfying start to your day.
For early risers, the options range from quick grab-and-go bakeries to sit-down cafes that open their doors before the city fully wakes up. If you are planning to beat the crowds to see the Cathedral’s interior or the cloister geese, fueling up first is a smart strategy. Many local bakeries start pulling fresh pastries out of the oven at dawn, offering the perfect, inexpensive way to eat like a local while you wait for the tourist attractions to open their gates.
Brunch, on the other hand, tends to start a bit later, usually kicking off around 10:00 AM and running well into the afternoon. This is where the neighborhood truly shines for those who prefer a leisurely morning. The emphasis shifts from speed to quality ingredients, with menus featuring locally sourced produce, free-range eggs, and specialty coffee beans roasted in Barcelona. The atmosphere in these spots often spills out onto the ancient stone steps, creating a dining experience that feels distinctly Mediterranean.
However, navigating the crowds and the sheer volume of choices can be overwhelming. That is why we have curated a list of the absolute best spots that honor both the flavor and the unique atmosphere of the Ciutat Vella. We have prioritized places that offer consistent quality, fair pricing, and that distinct charm that makes eating near a 13th-century masterpiece so memorable. Whether you are craving something sweet, savory, or a bit of both, you will find the perfect table here.
To help you make the most of your morning in this historic district, here are the top spots you should not miss.

Absolutely incredible brunch experience! The chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries was so good—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. But the highlight for me was the green smoothie. It was incredibly fresh, delicious, and packed with that healthy, refreshing taste you want from a good smoothie.
Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully made. Definitely one of the brunch spots I’d recommend if you’re in Barcelona. I’ll definitely be coming back

To Natalia, Kiko and the kitchen staffs , thank you for accommodating us, for your friendly vibes and wonderful service. Your enthusiasm made us feel like eating our brunch at home and we're definitely sure because of your personality, you're attracting more customers. If I could only rate you 10 out of 5😬
To the resto, thank you for your good quality of food and drinks, we loved how cosy the place is, the music, the designs and details of the resto inside. You've got lovely staffs which deserve recognition at all times. You sums up my birthday trip to Barcelona. Viva!
WILL DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOUR PLACE TO MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS🤍🤍🤍

I recently enjoyed a wonderful breakfast experience that stood out both for its delicious food and exceptional service.
The breakfast was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor, with a great variety of options that catered to different tastes. Everything was served quickly and beautifully presented, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
What truly made the visit memorable was the outstanding service provided by Natalia. She was attentive, friendly, and very professional throughout the entire time. Natalia made sure everything was perfect, checked in at the right moments, and created a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Overall, it was a fantastic start to the day, combining excellent food with truly exemplary service. I would definitely return and highly recommend it.

We walked into this restaurant not knowing what to expect and ended up discovering such a gem. It was an absolute delight! Our server, Natalia, was attentive and on top of everything, making the experience even better. The food was incredible, and the atmosphere was just perfect. Highly recommend this place!

Long story short, it is my 4th time at this place, which means it is great! The location is easy to find, stuff is very friendly and always there for you, asking how's everything. The food is excellent: good variety of dishes, pleasant combinations of ingredients and a perfect balance of flavours. Just keepin mind: the food is so filling that you only feel hungry in the evening (I think this is a big advantage). I highly recommend visiting!

We really enjoyed our brunch at Berry Brunch Barcelona. The food was excellent — the pancakes were light and fluffy, the eggs were cooked just right, and everything felt fresh and flavorful. The atmosphere is cool and modern with a relaxed, inviting vibe that makes it a nice spot to unwind.
It was very busy when we went, which is usually a positive sign. Service was mostly decent, but unfortunately the drinks were a real letdown. We ordered them as soon as we sat down, but they didn’t arrive until well after our food was served. After waiting about 30 minutes, I had to ask the server twice before they finally came. She was nice about it, but it was clearly forgotten the first time.
I was a bit disappointed because the prices are on the higher side for Barcelona, and I really didn’t want to dig into my pancakes and eggs without a drink. By the time the drinks showed up, the food had already cooled down more than I would have liked.
Even with that hiccup, the quality of the food was strong enough that we’d gladly go back. Just hope they tighten up the drink timing on busier days.

Beautiful food and fantastic presentation! The menu has a great variety with lots of choice to pick from. A special shoutout to our waitress, Cristina, who was absolutely wonderful and made us feel so welcome.
The only minor thing was that the burger was a little bit too salty for my taste, but overall, everything else was fantastic. Highly recommended!

Great food and beautiful decorations. We had the avocado toast with poached eggs and some fresh juice. It all tasted really good. The only bad thing was that the juice was a bit thin and the poached eggs were hard boiled. But overall super nice

Horrible ticking noise coming from the AC, very slow service, 15 minutes to get water and drinks, waiters barely know English, coffee was HORRIBLE literally undrinkable and ordered a lactose free drink and it came with whipped cream and we had to send it back! Moreover the bathroom literally opens unto the kitchen which is maybe the most unsanitary thing I’ve ever seen in a catering establishment!
Basic maintenance of the AC and fixing the toilet as well as teaching your waiters basic English and some enthusiasm is the minimum to justify the exorbitant prices
Arnoud Gieles★★★☆☆
The good reviews drew us to this place, along with the fairylike decor in the front. However, we were given a seat in the back, where the decor is basic and a bit dilapidated. The food is definitely okay, with generous portions. Alot of effort is made to make it look special, but the taste lags behind the looks.

Amazing food and service. Alessia was our waitress. She came and checked on us a couple times during our visit to see if we needed anything (which is rare here in Barcelona as I do not think it is the custom, everywhere else we went we would have to get our waiter’s attention as they only came by to take orders and drop off food). Very lovely. She spoke Spanish and English and was very nice. We ordered the eggs benni, eggs carbonara, vanilla latte, and ube latte. Everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend. Thank you Alessia!

We had such a lovely time at Noor in Barcelona. From the moment we arrived, everything felt warm, welcoming and special. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented and full of flavour, making the whole experience such a pleasure.
But what really made our visit memorable was the wonderful service. Gina, Carolina and Layla were all absolutely lovely — so friendly, attentive and genuinely caring. They made us feel so welcome and looked after us throughout our visit with beautiful smiles and such a lovely warmth.
It’s those little personal touches and the people who make an experience truly memorable, and they certainly did that for us. ❤️

My family and I were in Spain and Portugal for a whole month and I can say with full sincerity that this was the number one restaurant we went to. A lot of the other restaurants and cafes give little food for such high prices which leaves you hungry and in search for another restaurant. This place was the first restaurant we went to that left us saying “we’re so full.” The food was magnificent (I recommend the Eggs Benedict but I’m biased for some good eggs 😋) and our waiter, Henjie, was absolutely marvelous. Everyone here is so incredibly nice and the atmosphere is amazing. I love you Henjie!!! You made our brunch an amazing experience 🫶🫶🫶

What a lovely lunch. We sat overlooking the park on a beautiful Barcelona afternoon and everything about the experience felt relaxed and easy.
The mushroom toast was outstanding. The mushrooms were rich and savory, and the sun-dried tomatoes were used with a surprisingly light touch.. just enough to add brightness and depth without taking over the dish. One of those simple plates that is much better than it has any right to be.
A special thank you to Noel, who took such wonderful care of us throughout the meal. Warm, attentive, and genuinely kind.. the kind of service that makes you want to linger a little longer.
We’ll absolutely be back.

A wide variety of classic brunch options including both American and typical Spanish meals.
Very friendly and helpful staff who speak English. They will help you store luggage if needed.
The American-style pancakes are large, fluffy and thick - I would estimate at least 2-3cm tall. The full American brunch is an enormous portion perfect to share. The scrambled eggs are cooked so that they are not at all runny on the outside, but when you cut into them they are warm and gooey. The bacon is cut in thick slices (more English style than American style). The sausages are slightly sweet.
The Acai bowl is based around a sorbet of Acai, with plenty of fresh fruit and coconut shavings on top. The Acaï melts quite quickly around the edges so I would recommend eating from the outside of the bowl inwards.
The tea/coffee/matcha is unsweetened. There is brown sugar available on the table.
Free tap water.

We came for breakfast two days in a row because we were delighted with the food, the atmosphere and the staff. The food tastes great and looks beautiful. Reviewing brunch spots is somewhat of a new challenge, especially in a city like Barcelona, where there are hundreds of them and many feel like variations of the same concept.
The real secret to a good brunch review lies in the subtleties: textures, presentation, and balance of flavors,as well as, of course, the courtesy of the staff.
Nonna’s brunch is, so far, the best I’ve had in Barcelona. The Hollandaise sauce was impeccably velvety, and the eggs Benedict split and bled in a way that felt almost miraculous. The toppings are more than generous. The bread had a distinctly homemade crunch, far removed from anything artificial. The mushroom and egg toast came with a tartar-style sauce that elevated the entire dish (and, quite frankly, my day).
The coffee also deserves a mention. I was genuinely surprised by how good the oat milk cappuccino was, and let’s be honest, oat milk coffee doesn’t always deliver.
As promised, a note on the staff: consistently kind, and more importantly, genuinely cheerful, even when the place was full.
I’ll definitely be coming back regularly for that oat milk cappuccino.

We found this place because it was near our hotel and what a lovely find. The food was delicious and plentiful. They have food coffee, mimosas and other fresh beverages for breakfast/brunch. We had a large group of 6 and they were able to accommodate. The service was quick, friendly and the price was well worth everything we had. We had French toast, eggs Benedict, pancakes and the chicken sandwich - we couldn’t find any pics so it’s the only one I’m posting. The wait staff is lovely. Don’t miss going here if you’re in the area - definitely worth the trip.

Sooooo yummy. The cafe is super cute inside and outside. The staff were all very friendly and nice to chat with. I had an iced latte and really enjoyed it. The turkish eggs were great. The french toast was also very yummy, maybe could have just used a little more syrup. Loved it all! Would totally recommend

This small brunch spot is perfect. Menu has enough options for anyone, service time can vary though wasn’t too high for me. Good ambiance, not too loud, you can easily talk. The food is great, the photos speak for themselves.

I went to Breakfast Club Brunch Barcelona with a group of friends for brunch, and overall the experience was a bit mixed. When we arrived, the atmosphere felt quite chaotic. The staff were clearly overwhelmed and running around, which made the service feel disorganized. We had to wait a while before getting our table, even though it wasn’t extremely busy.
Once seated, we noticed that the table was quite small for four people, making it a little uncomfortable, especially once the food and drinks arrived. Speaking of drinks, they were fine nothing exceptional, but decent and enjoyable.
For food, I ordered the eggs Benedict. They were okay, but honestly nothing memorable. I’ve had much better and tastier versions elsewhere, especially considering the reputation of the place. The vegetables that came with the dish were undercooked, which was disappointing and took away from the overall plate.
In the end, the experience wasn’t bad, but it didn’t fully meet expectations. The place has potential, but better organization, more attentive service, and some improvements in food quality would make a big difference. Given the hype around this spot, I expected more.

Really good food! We were in the area and ended up here after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. Glad we’ve tried it!

Great breakfast place. We were seated immediately (just a 1 minute wait on a Sunday morning) with group of 3.
Eggs Benedict were tasty (local variant that i liked), great advocado toast as the 'el rancherito' toast with pulled pork.
Large portion and freshly made. Recommended

Among the pricier establishments, but it makes sense since there was a constant line of people waiting to get in. It is small and popular.
The avocado toasts, fresh orange juice and smoothie were all good. We were lucky to get a table, else about half of the seats are on stools. The service was also good.
The reasons for the 4/5 are the small portions (acai bowl e.g. was 60 % the size of normal), and the quite high prices. But I guess it is "supply and demand", but we have eaten other equivalent place for cheaper.

Bloom by Sasha Gothico was the perfect brunch experience and exactly what we needed.
The menu offers a great variety, and everything we tried was amazing. The food isn’t just beautifully presented it’s genuinely crafted like art. Every dish looked stunning and, even better, tasted just as good as it looked.
The coffee was excellent as well, perfectly complementing the whole experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with several outdoor seating areas that make it ideal for a long, enjoyable brunch. The staff were very accommodating, even letting us move outside once a table became available.
After a few days of disappointing food in Barcelona, finding this place felt like a win so much so that we came back for a second day. Definitely a spot worth returning to.

The ultimate brunch for a big appetite! ☕🥑 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was staying nearby in the city centre and looking for a proper, high-quality breakfast/brunch. Based on the great ratings, I tried Bloome by Sasha, and it was absolutely amazing!
Since arriving in Barcelona, this was the best place I’ve found for a proper caramel latte. It was exactly what I was looking for and really hit the spot.
I ordered the Black Moon Benedict, which was incredible. It comes with sweet potato chips and a jalapeño sauce that tastes great and adds a perfect kick.
Pro Tip: This dish is definitely for someone with a serious appetite! It’s very generous and filling—if I hadn't been so hungry, I don’t think I could have finished it.
I extremely enjoyed my brunch here. If you are in the city center and want a high-quality, satisfying meal to start your day, I highly recommend this place!

The Mississippi pancakes were generous in portion but a little lacking in sweetness for my daughter’s taste. They could benefit from a bit more banana or fresh fruit to balance out the stack, especially given the size of the dish.
The English breakfast was excellent, well-cooked and satisfying, and the side of chorizo stood out as particularly flavorful.
Coffee was genuinely perfect, easily one of the highlights of the meal.
The overall vibe is a classic European café style, relaxed and comfortable, good for a casual sit-down breakfast or brunch.
One important note: this is not a place for traditional Spanish food. If you are looking for local Catalan or Spanish breakfast or tapas, this will feel more international than authentic.
Overall, strong for coffee and comfort food, but not aligned with a traditional Barcelona culinary experience. Great service and free wifi.

Such a great spot for brunch. We got the pancakes and the Turkish eggs and both were absolutely delicious, honestly some of the best we had. Insider Tips for Breakfast and Brunch Near the Cathedral
Navigating the dining scene around a major tourist hub requires a bit of strategy to ensure you get the best value and quality for your money. The rules of engagement here differ slightly from the more residential neighborhoods of Barcelona like Gràcia or Eixample. Understanding the local timing, reservation culture, and seating preferences will save you from long waits and mediocre meals.
First, pay close attention to the distinction between a barra (bar) and a terraza (terrace). Many cafes in the Gothic Quarter charge a significant surcharge for sitting outside, especially if you have a direct view of the Cathedral or a picturesque plaza. If you are on a budget, order your coffee and pastry at the bar and stand like a local; you will often pay half the price of the table service. If you do choose the terrace for the ambiance, accept that you are paying a premium for the real estate and the people-watching, not necessarily the food.
Second, timing is everything. If you want a quiet, relaxed brunch, aim to arrive right when the kitchen opens, usually around 10:00 AM or 10:30 AM. By noon, the most popular spots will have queues stretching out the door. Conversely, if you are up early for sightseeing, skip the hotel breakfast and wait until 9:00 AM when the local bakeries have their second batch of pastries coming out warm.
Third, do not be afraid to wander down a side street. The streets immediately flanking the Cathedral—such as Carrer dels Boters or Carrer de Montjuïc del Bisbe—can be hit or miss. However, venturing just two or three blocks toward Plaça Sant Just or the Port Vell side often reveals hidden gems that cater more to residents and less to day-trippers. Look for menus written in Catalan or chalkboards advertising menú del dia; these are signs of a place that values repeat local business.
Fourth, understand the coffee culture. A standard café con leche is a morning staple, but if you are a specialty coffee enthusiast, you need to seek out the third-wave cafes that have popped up in the area. These spots source single-origin beans and offer alternative milks, which are not always guaranteed in traditional bars. Do not expect a giant mug of filter coffee in a traditional Spanish bar; they operate on espresso-based drinks, and the portion sizes are smaller than what you might be used to in the UK or the US.
Finally, make reservations for larger groups. The winding streets mean that restaurant spaces are often small and narrow, with limited seating inside. If you are traveling with a family or a group of four or more, calling ahead or sending a quick message via Instagram or WhatsApp is highly recommended. This is especially crucial on Sundays when much of the city is closed, and everyone flocks to the few open brunch spots in the Gothic Quarter.
Starting your day in the shadow of the Barcelona Cathedral is one of the great pleasures of visiting the city. The clinking of coffee cups mixed with the echoes of church bells creates an atmosphere that is impossible to replicate elsewhere. Whether you choose a modern brunch spread with mimosas or a simple, buttery croissant dipped in thick hot chocolate, the experience is as much about the history surrounding you as it is about the food on your plate.
As you finish your meal, take a moment to simply sit and observe the neighborhood waking up. Watch the shopkeepers roll up their metal shutters, listen to the mix of languages from passing tourists, and breathe in the scent of fresh bread. The area near the Cathedral is more than just a stop on your itinerary; it is the beating heart of the old city, and breaking bread here is the most authentic way to connect with its rhythm.
