12 Best Coffee Shops Near Barcelona Cathedral

Wandering through the Gothic Quarter, with its narrow medieval lanes and hidden plazas, is an essential Barcelona experience. The area surrounding the Barcelona Cathedral is a labyrinth of history, but all that exploration can work up a serious appetite for a good cup of coffee. Whether you need a quick espresso at the bar to start your morning or a cozy corner to rest your feet with a flat white, the streets around the cathedral offer a surprising variety of options.

Finding a quality brew in such a tourist-heavy zone can be tricky. For every hidden gem serving single-origin roasts, there is a generic tourist trap offering burnt beans and inflated prices. As a local search strategist and coffee enthusiast, I understand the need to cut through the noise. You want to know where the locals go, where the baristas truly care about their craft, and where you can get a reliable caffeine fix without sacrificing atmosphere.

This guide focuses on the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral, balancing specialty coffee culture with traditional Spanish café charm. We have considered bean quality, milk texturing, service consistency, and the overall ambiance to bring you a curated list. Whether you prioritize the perfect Instagrammable latte art or simply the fastest, strongest espresso in the Gothic Quarter, this list has you covered.

The coffee scene in Barcelona has evolved rapidly over the last decade, shifting from solely dark-roasted, traditional blends to a vibrant third-wave movement. However, the charm of an old-school café—where the barista knows your name and the coffee comes with a square of dark chocolate—still holds a special place in the city’s heart. Near the Cathedral, these two worlds collide beautifully, offering historic interiors alongside sleek, minimalist design.

Accessibility is key when you are navigating the winding alleys of the Ciutat Vella. Most of these spots are within a five to ten-minute walk from the Cathedral’s main entrance, making them perfect pit stops during your sightseeing itinerary. We have noted which spots are best for a quick grab-and-go versus those suited for a slower, laptop-friendly morning, ensuring you can plan your visit according to your schedule.

While the architecture above you may be centuries old, the coffee culture here is vibrant and modern. Many of these establishments source their beans from local Barcelona roasters, ensuring freshness and supporting the local economy. You will find a range of milk alternatives, including oat and almond milk, available at nearly all specialty locations, catering to every dietary preference without compromising on taste.

Without further ado, here is our curated selection of the best spots to satisfy your caffeine cravings near the Barcelona Cathedral.

Coffee Casa is such a lovely spot! I got the vanilla iced latte and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The service was amazing, and the owner Philip was incredibly kind. We ended up having such a nice conversation, which made the whole experience feel really welcoming and personal. I also spotted their new tiramisu iced latte, and it looks amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that next time. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great coffee and genuinely friendly service!

The place is very overrated, the coffee was mediocre quality, and the barista on 29.03.2026 was very unfriendly. The place was nice however.. If you want good quality specialty coffee, don't come here. UPDATE: In my opinion, your response reflects a lack of the attitude expected in the horeca industry. Instead of showing empathy, it focuses on explaining why the customer’s opinion is not valid. Professionals usually start with a simple “sorry” — not necessarily admitting fault, but acknowledging the guest’s experience. When you have a 4.8 rating and people come from across Barcelona specifically to visit your place, expectations are naturally high. Not meeting those expectations is disappointing, regardless of the technical explanation. In horeca, you are often judged by your worst day, not your best ones — and this might be one of those moments.

As I was trying to leave the store after adding sugar, the Lady offered me more sweet pumps which made my drink perfectly the way I like, which is unreasonably sweet for a coffee 🤣 very cute spot. Highly recommend.
Jacob Nomafo★★★★★
Brilliant, there was a line outside when I arrived… not suprised - it’s the best coffee in El Born. I would recommend the tiramisu latte, delicious! 👏
Carolina Oliveira★★☆☆☆
Edited review: always mistrust establishments who give you free food in exchange for 5 star rating. The waitress was super friendly to give me a free gluten free banana cake to go, I even tasted a sample it was ok (maybe the sample was fresher then the give away cakes), but then the free cake was soaked the bag in oil, tasted like 1 week old cake. Not worth it. The coffee was ok but you can find a lot better less than 5 min walking distance. "Super tasty banana cake that is also gluten free! Also grabbed the cold brew, super fresh and good quality coffee." This review no longer applies.

Great place to get your caffeine fix while walking around the city. Lovely barista. The Tokyo Smart Coffee was really good and so was the iced matcha latte. You can also buy beans here to make your own coffee at home. Overall, lovely experience. Highly recommended 👍🏼

Super yummy coffee!! I would come here every morning if I lived in Barcelona! Friendly service, and a cute walk if your on the way to the Main Street to shop💚

Amazing coffee for a very small price. The baristas could speak in English and Spanish which made ordering easy. The quality of the coffee was amazing. If I would live in Barcelona I would come here anytime I needed a coffee to go.

Stopped by RIPA Coffee in Barcelona for coffee and really enjoyed the experience. The cappuccino was smooth, rich, and perfectly prepared with great latte art. The café has a modern and minimalist atmosphere, and the bright yellow counter gives the place a unique and vibrant character. Friendly staff, quality specialty coffee, and a relaxed vibe made it a great stop while exploring the city. Definitely recommended for coffee lovers in Barcelona.

Just the right balance — tried both filter and espresso, and they were both on point. So glad I found this spot after a week in Spain. Definitely a new favorite! Great coffee at a very fair price — around €14 per bag, which is excellent for the quality. Loved the vibe of the shop, good music, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service. Definitely a place I’d recommend and would happily come back to.

Everything is so great at this cafe. The food, coffee, service and the ambience. They have an artists’ collective that encourages and promotes local artists. They sell little postcards and art sourced from the workshops they conduct. The baristas that worked there were very friendly and hospitable. They made sure I was comfortable and brought water to me regularly. The conversation I had with Emma was great and very positive. Overall, a great place to support a local business owned by an immigrant.

Sunday morning stroll looking for a café that's a) open and b) has a little character, when we stumbled on this absolute gem. Lovely coffee, excellent granola/yoghurt/fruit bowl and great music playing in the background. Loads of other food options we only spotted as we were sitting on the brilliant bench out front, with its yellow wellies, as we watched the street wake up around us. We'll make time in our remaining 3 days to come back.

Super cute coffee shop cafe, tucked away in Carrer d’Avinyo. Calm & artsy vibe, with cool artwork on the walls. Had a lovely coffee (Cardamom….yum!), and really friendly, smiley service. Very happy to have found it!

If you are in Barcelona, this place is a must stop to have a good coffee and a good beer from Spain. I tried the El Camino IPA, from the Basqueland brewery and it was perfect, simply delicious. The director of the place is very friendly and the atmosphere is great! Definitely worth a visit!

The perfect place to relax or get some work done. The coffee is absolutely delicious, rich in flavor and made with great attention to detail. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and always make you feel comfortable. I also loved the interior design very cozy and stylish. It’s definitely a place I’d come back to again and again. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates good coffee and a great vibe!

Some places just feel like a small refuge in the middle of a busy day, and this coffee shop has become exactly that for me. I come here almost every day to enjoy a quiet moment alone or get lost in a good book. It’s a small, cozy space that immediately makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in. One of the things I love most about it is their clear laptop-free policy. There are signs around the shop explaining it, and it really helps preserve the calm atmosphere. Instead of rows of people working on screens, you see people reading, chatting, or simply enjoying their coffee. The staff are incredibly friendly and always happy to help. After coming here so often, I’ve reached that wonderful point where I don’t even have to order anymore, they already know exactly how I like my coffee ☺️ If you’re looking for a place to slow down, unplug, and truly enjoy a great cup of coffee, this spot is something special.

Amazing specialty café in Barcelona! It's located near the university area, just a short 5-minute walk from my hotel. The service was impressively quick and truly excellent. I absolutely loved the iced latte; it was simply delicious! The café may be small, but it has a wonderfully cozy atmosphere. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
Tomer Melamed★★★★★
What a great coffee. Really cool place, beautiful caps and decoration. Highly recommended

By far the best, most delicious oat milk cappuccino I have ever had, and I am a huge coffee addict. It's smooth, slightly sweet from the oat milk and absolutely delicious. No bitter or sour note too, which I personally don't mind in coffee. One sip and I could tell the quality coffee (the owner said it was peruvian blend) here is by far the best I have had. The owner is also very attentive and nice.
HanhLinh Tran★★★★★
It is such a great coffee shop that I sincerely do hope it won't be crowded by too many tourists (well to be fair, I'm a tourist myself).

A genuinely lovely little spot for coffee, something sweet, or a small sandwich — veggie and non-veggie options both. You can see the care the staff put into the craft, with great products matched by even better service. Warm, friendly, welcoming people turning out coffees for a steady stream of travelers and locals alike. Stop in for a cortado, a Vichy Catalan, and a slice of their homemade almond cake.

Their churros were the highlight! They have very little seatings, but it’s a cozy little spot. Coffees were amazing! Services were great!
Yaniv Ohana★★★★★
One of the most talked about places in Barcelona when it comes to coffee, it justifies itself and its status. In such a touristy place you would expect it to lose its identity, but when you see locals coming to buy their coffee there, you realize that they are probably in a different league. And when I say buy their coffee, I am of course talking about the fresh coffee beans that are on sale in a variety of flavors and from around the world. This small place can't accommodate many people, but there is real magic here. There are all the machines there, coffee is delicious, the smell of coffee is there, and overall, reasonable service. Highly recommended.
William ORourke★★★★★
Tostaderos Bon Mercat is one of those Barcelona coffee shops you’re genuinely happy to stumble into. The smell of freshly roasted nuts and coffee is incredible, and everything they sell tastes just as good as it smells. Their selection of coffee is outstanding—super fresh, high quality, and priced fairly. The staff is warm, patient, and clearly knows their products, always ready with great recommendations. Whether you’re stocking up on snacks, grabbing gifts, or just exploring local shops, this place is a must-stop. A true neighborhood gem in Barcelona.
Rebecca McLean★★★★★
Counter and ordering was busy and chaotic but that's how you know it's a good stop! Delicious coffee and one of the best pastries I had all trip. Some spots to sit and enjoy the morning as well. My cousin was ecstatic to find a place serving extra large coffees.

G Fullmoon★★★★☆
A nice specialty coffee stop in El Born. I tried their Tucán from Colombia, a natural Castillo from Huila rated 89 SCA points, with mango, banana liqueur and marzipan notes. I had it as a flat white. The mango was there but quite subtle for me, with a nice acidity that the milk softened really well without completely hiding the fruity character of the coffee. Overall, very enjoyable and well balanced. I also really liked the way the coffee was served. You get a small tasting card with all the information about the beans, process and expected flavour profile. It’s a small detail, but it makes the experience more interesting and gives you something to compare with what you actually taste in the cup. The place itself was calm and relaxed, with quite a few people working. The only point I would improve is the welcome. The staff were quite neutral, not unfriendly at all, but not particularly warm either. It was a relatively quick stop for us, but definitely a good one. Good coffee, a proper specialty approach and a place worth trying in Barcelona.
Violina Dimitrova★☆☆☆☆
It was not clear where we were supposed to wait and they were rude straight from the beginning. They didnt even let us choose in peace what we wanted to drink or eat and were in so much rush. It was not clear why we have to order, let our drinks sit and wait while they get a table. The table for freed and we tried sitting and they told us rudely not to sit because we have to wait. Its fine to wait but it was never clear what they want us to do. Starting from the girl at the counter to every single one that served us, they were so rude. The low reviews are not surprise. The drinks were okay but you can never enjoy after such service.
Pamela Munt-Madill★★★★★
My coffee experiences in Barcelona up to this point had been very mixed between traditional espresso bars, and Third Wave coffee venues. Hidden coffee roasters sat at the far end of the Third Wave experience with an extremely contemporary atmosphere and a selection of single origin coffees available to try or purchase. Upon entering the café, we were very confused about the seating protocol. Although we had already ordered our coffees and paid for them, we were not permitted to find a seat until our coffee had actually been prepared and was ready to be served to us. Personally, I find that confusion in a café, quite offputting however, some of that could've been the language barrier which I was experiencing. I had ordered a pour over coffee made on their automated pour over machine. This is the first time I've had a pour over made in such a manner, and the result was an excellent and sweet dripped coffee. I chose a Rwandan bean which had been roasted to a medium profile. Although, a much lighter roast and less intense cup of coffee than I usually choose, this was excellently prepared. My companion ordered a latte which was sufficiently intense and aromatic. At the front of the café, they had a traditional claw machine filled with bags of whole bean coffee. For one euro you could take your chance and try to grab a bag. I was unsuccessful, but I thought the concept was amazing. Certainly if you near this café in the El Born neighborhood, you will be treated to a very traditional third wave coffee experience. It is worth a visit for the interesting mechanization and variety of options for single origin beans.
Julian Mora★★★★★
Hidden Coffee is an excellent spot with very good coffee, ideal if you’re in the area. The taste is great, and they provide clear info about the origin of their specialty beans, which adds value. The pastry options work well as a complement. Some people use the space in a co‑working style, and the staff is friendly. Recommended.
SM Mizanur Rahman★★★★★
Way better than Starbucks, let’s start with that. Did not need a metric ton of sugar to make a good tasting coffee, which is what I look for these days. A slightly bitter but very smooth taste of my latte surprised and amazed me. The artwork was the cherry on top. It’s a little small/cozy but there was WiFi and a big table if you need to work.

Cool little coffee corner on the women's floor of H&M. We ordered the Latte and Espresso Pomelo Tonic. Latte was good but the Iced Espresso Pomelo Tonic was the star. Felt like a burst of fizz with every sip - really unique! If you're in the area, definitely pop by and give this a try!

- Such a friendly service. They even filled up my kid’s water bottle and fill it up with ice during the heatwave in July 2026 - Espresso Pomelo Tonic is refreshing!

Cool quiet place to chill in H&M with seating plenty of seatong indoors and outdoors. The gentleman working was really friendly and helpful with his suggestions. My friend had a espresso pomelo tonic which was really tasty and not too sweet just as he had described. I had a large latte which was great. It was a great momentary escape from the noise pollution and heat. Visited on July 10 at noon.

This coffee chain is really good and especially this one inside H&M on the first floor is really great. The lady knows how to make great coffee fast. They also have a nice outdoor terrace with many plants to sit and enjoying your coffee.

Flat white was fine - there was almost no acidity and the flavour was deeply concentrated. The milk was a bit overwhipped and overheated. Not the best coffee in Barcelona but still good. Very borderline 5 stars

Hello everyone, unfortunately not recommended. I like the Spanish serenity. But unfortunately I have to say that this is not possible. 3 counsellors out of 6 counsellors serve a woman who does not know what to drink. It was 12:14 noon. A client was taken care of by three people. I was the next turn. A number of people build up after her and after 5 minutes I left the store with nothing. Too bad, but that's not possible. Too bad that the review was not fully read and only half understood.

my partner and i came in for our morning coffee and to buy a few bags of specialty roasted coffee beans. we ended up meeting the owner, who was incredibly kind, patient, and very passionate about coffee! he didn't hesitate to answer our questions and he was happy to share explanations about what made each roast special. you can clearly see how much thought and care went into every aspect of this shop! we would 100% come back again

The iced pistachio latte was unreal 😍 the aesthetics of the little cosy coffee shop and the attention to detail of the latte was great, would recommend if you like pistachio! The service was a little.... Gloomy. Maybe there was an afternoon slump but could be friendlier to match the quality of the drink.

We stumble upon this coffee shop completely by mistake and so glad we did! The member of staff was very welcoming and the coffee he made was amazing and one of the best we have had anywhere! They have their own blend of coffee and pastries and even merchandise. The whole place is very well designed and aesthetic and a great recommended spot for picking up a lush coffee on your way through the old streets of Barcelona!

"Every single day during my stay in Barcelona, my morning started at Noor Specialty Coffee!" I came here daily, and honestly, it quickly became my favorite spot in the city. My absolute go-to drinks were the pistachio coffee and the iced latte—both were incredible! A huge special shoutout to Jesus, the barista! He was remarkably friendly, welcoming, and made every cup with so much care. Honestly, his amazing energy and outstanding coffee were the main reasons I kept coming back day after day. Great atmosphere, lovely vibes, and exceptional coffee. Highly recommend

Artisa Barcelona is an absolute gem! 🌟 We had such a delightful experience there. The quality of their products is top-notch, and every bite was a joy. My favorite is the empanadas. The service was impeccable – the staff was friendly and attentive. Plus, the value for money is outstanding! This is highly recommendable and we will definitely come back.

After dinner my friend and I went to this place for capuccino. It was served with a mini cookie and was so good. We enjoyed the capuccino so much we went back the following morning. This time I decided to try the Moka drink ...capuccino + chocolate + cream. Too bad we only have a short time to spend in Barcelona otherwise we would try their pastries and ice cream. The price was also very reasonable.

Lovely mostly gluten free little cafe. Waitress told us only the croissants are not gluten free. I had some very nice pancakes and bananas and a cappuccino and pricing was very reasonable.

I was nervous about this one- in a high tourist area.. on a square. We took a chance and glad we did! This place was perfect- the drag queens, the great service, the ambiance. The food was excellent and left us with about a 300€ bill for 5 people. Highly recommend the lamb.

Quality beans that are not too acidic. More in line with flavors of chocolate and hazelnut. Top quality machine with Victor Arduino grinders and a sexy La Marzocco machine. I ordered flat whites one day and cortado another day. All were perfect. For example they do not overheat the milk so it is still sweet you don’t need to add sugar. I saw they are all over the city so we are all lucky. I had two different baristas and they were both great.

Cute little cafe. The coffee was okay, not amazing but decent. However, the girl working there wasn’t very friendly and felt a bit cold, which took away a bit from the overall experience

I don't say this lightly: this was one of the best cappucinos I've ever tasted. We went in twice on consecutive mornings, the same guy served us both times and he was friendly and made a literally excellent cappucino. Perfect milk stiffness, just the right amount of espresso that was smooth, well-roasted and not burned - if I lived here this would absolutely be my regular coffee shop!

Good coffee place. They also have decaf. And seasonal flavored coffee like pumpkin spice and a Christmas special. Oh and I almost forgot: the pain au chocolat was excellent!

Not only is it a fresh and authentic place to drink and eat, the environment is dreamy. With terracotta walls and kind waiters with open windows onto a narrow street, it is a very relaxing place to stay at. We had the hummus toast (homemade topped with tomatoes, cumin and sesame seeds, pickled onions and capers) and the Cream Cheese Bagel with salmon. Both were very good because they were fresh and airy but also filling. The touch of the cumin seeds made a big difference in the taste and I loved it! I would make the bagels fluffier if possible, or better, try to make them homemade? A touch crunchier on the top would be also recommended. I would also recommend adding a salad next to the bagel. Overall, it is a tad bit too expensive for the portion. The Orange Juice & Expresso combo was the best we ever had! They were well mixed together instead of layered onto of each other. For my flat white, I love it buuutt would have made it stronger than it was. Maybe taking another grain for when using milk? The expressi itself was strong, and tasteful in chocolate aftertaste! Thank you for the warm service, the recommendations and the absence of rush!

I visited this café for breakfast on the last two mornings, and both experiences were truly unforgettable. The atmosphere is charming, authentic, and incredibly welcoming. Everything was spotless and well-maintained, creating a comfortable environment to start the day. The staff were simply wonderful. Everyone was kind, smiling, and genuinely helpful. One of the staff members even gave me friendly advice not to leave my belongings unattended, which I really appreciated as a visitor. What stood out most was how genuine they all seemed. Even from these brief interactions, it was easy to see that they are truly good-hearted people. In fact, I found myself thinking that these are exactly the kind of people I would happily be friends with outside of the café as well. A special compliment goes to the barista. It was a pleasure just listening to the preparation of the hot drinks. The milk steaming was flawless, showing real skill and care. The matcha was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. On both visits, I ordered the avocado toast, and honestly, I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about it. It was perfect in every way. Overall, I absolutely loved this place. It made my mornings better and helped start my days on a positive note. The team always said goodbye warmly and wished me a lovely day, which was such a nice touch. I sincerely hope to return someday, and that’s something I don’t say often about cafés or restaurants. Thank you for everything and for making my stay so memorable! ❤️☕️🥑

I tried the coffee here, and it has a very mild and smooth flavor—perfect for those who prefer their coffee on the lighter side. The two male servers were incredibly friendly and attentive. The shop itself has a beautiful environment with lots of green plants, making it a wonderful and relaxing place to hang out. Highly recommended!❤️

Unfortunately, our experience at this café was disappointing. When we entered, the atmosphere was uncomfortable and the place felt poorly ventilated. We decided to ignore that and place our order. We ordered a cold filtered coffee, and I asked for extra ice. The staff member who took the order responded rudely and sharply, saying: “This is a cold coffee, why do you want ice?!” His attitude was unprofessional and unpleasant, as shown in the photo. We had cake from outside, and we were told that we couldn’t eat it inside the café. We accepted that politely, took our coffee, and stood outside. Shortly after, the same staff member came out and told us that we couldn’t even eat the cake near the café, which was quite unreasonable. Overall, the experience was poor in terms of atmosphere and customer service, and I would not visit again.

Veraa Cafe is a gem! The atmosphere is beautiful and cozy, and the service was top-notch. I meant to get a picture of the food, but it was so delicious I completely forgot to take a photo. If you want a fantastic breakfast and coffee, this is the place to go!

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Barcelona Cathedral

Navigating the coffee culture in the heart of the old city requires a bit of local insight. The rhythm of the day here is different from other parts of Barcelona, and knowing when and how to order can vastly improve your experience. Here are some essential tips to help you drink coffee like a local and avoid common tourist pitfalls while exploring the area.

1. Know the difference between "barra" and "mesa."
In most traditional Spanish cafés, prices change depending on where you consume your drink. Standing at the bar (barra) is significantly cheaper than sitting at a table (mesa). If you are on a budget or just need a quick energy boost, do as the locals do and order your cortado at the counter. It is faster, cheaper, and offers a more authentic atmosphere where you can watch the baristas work their magic.

2. Master the local coffee vocabulary.
While "latte" is widely understood, ordering like a local will get you a better drink. A "café con leche" is the Spanish equivalent of a latte, while a "cortado" is a smaller, stronger coffee cut with a splash of milk—perfect for mid-morning. If you want a true espresso, ask for a "solo." For cold options, "café con hielo" (espresso poured over ice) is a local favorite, especially during the hot summer months.

3. Avoid the immediate plaza seating.
Restaurants directly facing the Cathedral often charge a premium for the view, and the coffee quality is rarely the priority. The prices for a simple cappuccino can double simply because you are looking at the Gothic façade. Walk two or three streets away from the main square into the labyrinth of the Gothic Quarter; you will find better quality beans and fairer prices within minutes.

4. Timing is everything.
Barcelona operates on a distinct schedule. If you want a quiet, peaceful coffee experience, aim for the morning rush between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM when locals are fueling up before work. Afternoons, especially between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, see a massive influx of tourists. If you visit during peak sightseeing hours, be prepared to wait for a seat at the smaller specialty shops, or opt for a takeaway cup to enjoy in a nearby plaza.

5. Carry cash for the small spots.
While most specialty coffee shops and modern cafés accept credit cards, some of the older, traditional bars tucked away in the alleys operate on a cash-only basis or have a minimum spend for card payments. Having a €10 or €20 note in your pocket ensures you won’t miss out on a hidden gem just because you left your cash at the hotel.

6. Look for local roasters.
To ensure you are getting the freshest cup, look for signs indicating "Cafè de especialitat" or check the bags on the shelves. Shops that proudly display local roasters like Nomad Coffee, Right Side Coffee, or Three Marks are guaranteeing a high-quality, traceable product. These beans are usually roasted within weeks of being served, offering a flavor profile that generic commercial coffee simply cannot match.

The area around Barcelona Cathedral is more than just a historical monument; it is a living, breathing neighborhood where the scent of freshly ground coffee mingles with the sea breeze. Taking the time to step off the main tourist trail and into a small café is one of the best ways to connect with the city’s contemporary rhythm.

Whether you are a third-wave aficionado seeking the perfect pour-over or simply in need of a strong espresso to power your afternoon of sightseeing, the Gothic Quarter has a cup with your name on it. Enjoy the atmosphere, savor the flavor, and let the caffeine carry you through the winding, magical streets of Barcelona.
