12 Best Cafes Near Barcelona Cathedral

Wandering through the Gothic Quarter, with its narrow medieval lanes and hidden plazas, builds up a very specific kind of appetite. You are not just looking for a quick caffeine fix; you are looking for a moment of respite. The area surrounding the Barcelona Cathedral is a sensory overload of history, and the best way to process it is often from a quiet table with a view of the stonework.

However, the streets directly adjacent to major landmarks are often notorious for overpriced tourist traps and mediocre coffee. Finding a spot that balances authenticity with quality requires a bit of local knowledge. You want a place where the espresso is pulled correctly and the atmosphere hasn’t been sanitized for mass tourism.

Fortunately, the labyrinthine streets of the Barri Gòtic hide some true gems. From century-old granjas serving thick hot chocolate to modern third-wave roasters perfecting the flat white, the variety is staggering. Whether you need a quick cortado standing at a marble bar or a leisurely brunch, the area has you covered.

The key is knowing which alleyway to turn down. Some of the best patios are hidden behind unassuming wooden doors or tucked away in corners that don’t appear on the main tourist maps. These are the places where locals pause during their workday or where artists have gathered for decades.

This guide focuses on the establishments that offer more than just a caffeine boost. We have considered the quality of the beans, the skill of the baristas, the historical significance of the location, and the overall vibe. We want you to experience the city like a local, not just as a passerby.

Below, you will find a curated list of the 12 best cafes near Barcelona Cathedral. Each option offers something unique, ensuring that whether you are a digital nomad needing Wi-Fi or a foodie hunting for the perfect pastry, you will find your spot.

Let this be your starting point for exploring the culinary underbelly of the Gothic Quarter. Pull up a chair, listen to the church bells, and savor the slower pace of life that defines this ancient part of Barcelona.

Coffee Casa is such a lovely spot! I got the vanilla iced latte and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The service was amazing, and the owner Philip was incredibly kind. We ended up having such a nice conversation, which made the whole experience feel really welcoming and personal. I also spotted their new tiramisu iced latte, and it looks amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that next time. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great coffee and genuinely friendly service!

The place is very overrated, the coffee was mediocre quality, and the barista on 29.03.2026 was very unfriendly. The place was nice however.. If you want good quality specialty coffee, don't come here. UPDATE: In my opinion, your response reflects a lack of the attitude expected in the horeca industry. Instead of showing empathy, it focuses on explaining why the customer’s opinion is not valid. Professionals usually start with a simple “sorry” — not necessarily admitting fault, but acknowledging the guest’s experience. When you have a 4.8 rating and people come from across Barcelona specifically to visit your place, expectations are naturally high. Not meeting those expectations is disappointing, regardless of the technical explanation. In horeca, you are often judged by your worst day, not your best ones — and this might be one of those moments.

As I was trying to leave the store after adding sugar, the Lady offered me more sweet pumps which made my drink perfectly the way I like, which is unreasonably sweet for a coffee 🤣 very cute spot. Highly recommend.

Brilliant, there was a line outside when I arrived… not suprised - it’s the best coffee in El Born. I would recommend the tiramisu latte, delicious! 👏

Edited review: always mistrust establishments who give you free food in exchange for 5 star rating. The waitress was super friendly to give me a free gluten free banana cake to go, I even tasted a sample it was ok (maybe the sample was fresher then the give away cakes), but then the free cake was soaked the bag in oil, tasted like 1 week old cake. Not worth it. The coffee was ok but you can find a lot better less than 5 min walking distance. "Super tasty banana cake that is also gluten free! Also grabbed the cold brew, super fresh and good quality coffee." This review no longer applies.

Everything is so great at this cafe. The food, coffee, service and the ambience. They have an artists’ collective that encourages and promotes local artists. They sell little postcards and art sourced from the workshops they conduct. The baristas that worked there were very friendly and hospitable. They made sure I was comfortable and brought water to me regularly. The conversation I had with Emma was great and very positive. Overall, a great place to support a local business owned by an immigrant.

Sunday morning stroll looking for a café that's a) open and b) has a little character, when we stumbled on this absolute gem. Lovely coffee, excellent granola/yoghurt/fruit bowl and great music playing in the background. Loads of other food options we only spotted as we were sitting on the brilliant bench out front, with its yellow wellies, as we watched the street wake up around us. We'll make time in our remaining 3 days to come back.

Super cute coffee shop cafe, tucked away in Carrer d’Avinyo. Calm & artsy vibe, with cool artwork on the walls. Had a lovely coffee (Cardamom….yum!), and really friendly, smiley service. Very happy to have found it!

If you are in Barcelona, this place is a must stop to have a good coffee and a good beer from Spain. I tried the El Camino IPA, from the Basqueland brewery and it was perfect, simply delicious. The director of the place is very friendly and the atmosphere is great! Definitely worth a visit!

The perfect place to relax or get some work done. The coffee is absolutely delicious, rich in flavor and made with great attention to detail. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and always make you feel comfortable. I also loved the interior design very cozy and stylish. It’s definitely a place I’d come back to again and again. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates good coffee and a great vibe!

A genuinely lovely little spot for coffee, something sweet, or a small sandwich — veggie and non-veggie options both. You can see the care the staff put into the craft, with great products matched by even better service. Warm, friendly, welcoming people turning out coffees for a steady stream of travelers and locals alike. Stop in for a cortado, a Vichy Catalan, and a slice of their homemade almond cake.

Their churros were the highlight! They have very little seatings, but it’s a cozy little spot. Coffees were amazing! Services were great!

One of the most talked about places in Barcelona when it comes to coffee, it justifies itself and its status. In such a touristy place you would expect it to lose its identity, but when you see locals coming to buy their coffee there, you realize that they are probably in a different league. And when I say buy their coffee, I am of course talking about the fresh coffee beans that are on sale in a variety of flavors and from around the world. This small place can't accommodate many people, but there is real magic here. There are all the machines there, coffee is delicious, the smell of coffee is there, and overall, reasonable service. Highly recommended.
William ORourke★★★★★
Tostaderos Bon Mercat is one of those Barcelona coffee shops you’re genuinely happy to stumble into. The smell of freshly roasted nuts and coffee is incredible, and everything they sell tastes just as good as it smells. Their selection of coffee is outstanding—super fresh, high quality, and priced fairly. The staff is warm, patient, and clearly knows their products, always ready with great recommendations. Whether you’re stocking up on snacks, grabbing gifts, or just exploring local shops, this place is a must-stop. A true neighborhood gem in Barcelona.

Counter and ordering was busy and chaotic but that's how you know it's a good stop! Delicious coffee and one of the best pastries I had all trip. Some spots to sit and enjoy the morning as well. My cousin was ecstatic to find a place serving extra large coffees.

I take every guest who visits me to Salterio, and I've been here countless times over the last 4 years. Every single visit has been an absolute and unique pleasure. Their teas, coffees, and olives are fantastic, but their eggplant and tahini specialty (the incredible flatbread dish in my photos) is simply out of this world! The cozy, authentic, and low-lit atmosphere makes the experience even more special. It is my heartfelt recommendation to anyone visiting Barcelona, you definitely have to check this gem out!
Lawrence Grotts★★★★★
Walking through the dark, narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, we came upon the alluring Salterio Tea House, located in a quaint Medieval building with divine aromas wafting out of the front door, drawing us in. From the moment we entered, it felt as though time stood still— a time long ago. Not only an enchanting tea house with the perfect music, but they also offer a great range of vegetarian food, mainly "Sardo" (stuffed flatbreads with assortment of fresh vegetables and cheese, drizzled with tahini or pesto). Of course we had to indulge with a hummus appetizer, pesto Sardo and the most delicious sangria we’ve ever had, made fresh by our lovely host, Maria Rosario. Everything is made right there at the bar and what a pleasure it was I soak it all in! It felt like home and we look forward to visiting again. ¡Muchas gracias! ~Lorenzo, Adalid & Coco ✨💛

Not only is it a fresh and authentic place to drink and eat, the environment is dreamy. With terracotta walls and kind waiters with open windows onto a narrow street, it is a very relaxing place to stay at. We had the hummus toast (homemade topped with tomatoes, cumin and sesame seeds, pickled onions and capers) and the Cream Cheese Bagel with salmon. Both were very good because they were fresh and airy but also filling. The touch of the cumin seeds made a big difference in the taste and I loved it! I would make the bagels fluffier if possible, or better, try to make them homemade? A touch crunchier on the top would be also recommended. I would also recommend adding a salad next to the bagel. Overall, it is a tad bit too expensive for the portion. The Orange Juice & Expresso combo was the best we ever had! They were well mixed together instead of layered onto of each other. For my flat white, I love it buuutt would have made it stronger than it was. Maybe taking another grain for when using milk? The expressi itself was strong, and tasteful in chocolate aftertaste! Thank you for the warm service, the recommendations and the absence of rush!

I visited this café for breakfast on the last two mornings, and both experiences were truly unforgettable. The atmosphere is charming, authentic, and incredibly welcoming. Everything was spotless and well-maintained, creating a comfortable environment to start the day. The staff were simply wonderful. Everyone was kind, smiling, and genuinely helpful. One of the staff members even gave me friendly advice not to leave my belongings unattended, which I really appreciated as a visitor. What stood out most was how genuine they all seemed. Even from these brief interactions, it was easy to see that they are truly good-hearted people. In fact, I found myself thinking that these are exactly the kind of people I would happily be friends with outside of the café as well. A special compliment goes to the barista. It was a pleasure just listening to the preparation of the hot drinks. The milk steaming was flawless, showing real skill and care. The matcha was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. On both visits, I ordered the avocado toast, and honestly, I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about it. It was perfect in every way. Overall, I absolutely loved this place. It made my mornings better and helped start my days on a positive note. The team always said goodbye warmly and wished me a lovely day, which was such a nice touch. I sincerely hope to return someday, and that’s something I don’t say often about cafés or restaurants. Thank you for everything and for making my stay so memorable! ❤️☕️🥑

I tried the coffee here, and it has a very mild and smooth flavor—perfect for those who prefer their coffee on the lighter side. The two male servers were incredibly friendly and attentive. The shop itself has a beautiful environment with lots of green plants, making it a wonderful and relaxing place to hang out. Highly recommended!❤️

Unfortunately, our experience at this café was disappointing. When we entered, the atmosphere was uncomfortable and the place felt poorly ventilated. We decided to ignore that and place our order. We ordered a cold filtered coffee, and I asked for extra ice. The staff member who took the order responded rudely and sharply, saying: “This is a cold coffee, why do you want ice?!” His attitude was unprofessional and unpleasant, as shown in the photo. We had cake from outside, and we were told that we couldn’t eat it inside the café. We accepted that politely, took our coffee, and stood outside. Shortly after, the same staff member came out and told us that we couldn’t even eat the cake near the café, which was quite unreasonable. Overall, the experience was poor in terms of atmosphere and customer service, and I would not visit again.

The café has a lovely atmosphere and is a nice place to sit and relax. The staff member who served us mentioned that it was his first day, so we do understand that not everything may have gone perfectly. Unfortunately, the food was a bit disappointing. The crème brûlée was overburnt—the sugar topping wasn’t just dark, but had some white, burnt spots as well. It’s a shame because the custard underneath was delicious. The churros were also inconsistent. Some parts were soft and soggy, while one small section un the downside was burnt. The coffee itself tasted good. We ordered iced coffee but were served two cups of hot coffee along with a glass of ice. This may simply have been a language barrier or a misunderstanding. He mentioned, that he dont know whats on the card. Overall, the café has a lot of potential thanks to its beautiful ambiance, and I hope these small issues improve over time.

Mateo, the Barrister, told me about the history of this charming 'hole in the wall' coffee shop. So interesting. First hand made, gas powered espresso coffee machine in Spain. Its still there, although not at work any more! 😁

What a charming stop while exploring the gothic quarter. I had this place marked and glad we had a chance to stop and enjoy a cafe solo and creme Catalan in the same place so many others before us discussed philosophy, politics, music poetry. It was you could feel the history and tradition as we enjoyed a pause in our sightseeing in the gothic quarter. Cafe Solo also excellent. Very rich and full-bodied.

Mesón del Café is one of those timeless Barcelona cafés that instantly feels like home. The atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic, the kind of place where you sit down “just for a minute” and end up staying much longer. The churros with dark chocolate are the star of the show. Light, crisp, and freshly made—perfect for dipping into the rich, velvety chocolate that has just the right balance of sweetness and depth. It’s comfort in the purest form. A delightful Barcelona classic. Don’t miss the churros.

Mesón del Café is a timeless spot in the heart of Barcelona. The coffee is rich and perfectly prepared, and the cozy old-world charm makes you want to linger. The staff are welcoming and add to the authentic, local feel. A perfect place to pause, enjoy a great cup, and soak in a piece of the city’s history.

I loved my visit to the corgi cafe! The food was amazing, we shared both the green avocado toast and the maple pancakes and they were amazing. These poirtion sizes were perfect for a breakfast/lunch. The store had a super cute and clean interior and the service was great! The corgi was sleeping in his or her little bed and was adorable (see pics 🙂 )The only thing is that the music was a little too loud, but luckly me and my partner sat next to eachother so we could still hear eachother. I would definitely recomment this place 🙂

As a huge lover of dogs, as soon as I saw there was a brunch place called “Corgi Cafe” near my hotel, I was sold. Not only was the food actually really good, but the ambiance and decor was a 10/10 and there was a cute resident corgi which walks around while you eat. Not only is the spot corgi-themed with cute photos of corgis everywhere but the fact that they had an actual corgi to watch and pet while you enjoyed your food, was a huge selling factor for me. Great concept and I wish every city had one of these!

Very cute cafe with an in house corgi! Food was fantastic. The French toast has a caramelized exterior with a soft creamy center. Pancakes were also very good. My husband enjoyed the smoked salmon eggs Benedict.

The food was amazing. And the drinks, too. I haven't had a good Latte Macchiato at all while in Barcelona but this one waa great. Also love the esthetic of the place and the staff was so nice. A big big bonus is the corgi ofc. And I love that the staff makes sure that you leave the corgi alone if it needs rest and only pet it if it comes to you. Awesome place. Would recommend it to everyone!

My 15 year old son LOVES corgis and of course months before our trip he discovered The corgi cafe. I did not make any promises, but was able to surprise him today with a visit. We arrived around noon with a party of five and waited less than 15 for a table. Latte was there and making her rounds. She was such a good girl. And they even gave my kids treats to give her at the end of our meal. I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing the food was! We had the green toast, corgi pancakes, chocolate pancakes and an açai bowl and everything was amazing! The staff were extremely pleasant and kind. I’m so glad we made this happen today!

After dinner my friend and I went to this place for capuccino. It was served with a mini cookie and was so good. We enjoyed the capuccino so much we went back the following morning. This time I decided to try the Moka drink ...capuccino + chocolate + cream. Too bad we only have a short time to spend in Barcelona otherwise we would try their pastries and ice cream. The price was also very reasonable.

I like the fact they’re actually chill about laptop usage. Come order a coffee and a nice bit of pizza, connect to the WiFi and relax. Too many cafes in Spain are very hostile to laptop users so it’s refreshing to see. Just don’t overstay your welcome when it’s super busy and not order anything

Some places just feel like a small refuge in the middle of a busy day, and this coffee shop has become exactly that for me. I come here almost every day to enjoy a quiet moment alone or get lost in a good book. It’s a small, cozy space that immediately makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in. One of the things I love most about it is their clear laptop-free policy. There are signs around the shop explaining it, and it really helps preserve the calm atmosphere. Instead of rows of people working on screens, you see people reading, chatting, or simply enjoying their coffee. The staff are incredibly friendly and always happy to help. After coming here so often, I’ve reached that wonderful point where I don’t even have to order anymore, they already know exactly how I like my coffee ☺️ If you’re looking for a place to slow down, unplug, and truly enjoy a great cup of coffee, this spot is something special.

Amazing specialty café in Barcelona! It's located near the university area, just a short 5-minute walk from my hotel. The service was impressively quick and truly excellent. I absolutely loved the iced latte; it was simply delicious! The café may be small, but it has a wonderfully cozy atmosphere. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

By far the best, most delicious oat milk cappuccino I have ever had, and I am a huge coffee addict. It's smooth, slightly sweet from the oat milk and absolutely delicious. No bitter or sour note too, which I personally don't mind in coffee. One sip and I could tell the quality coffee (the owner said it was peruvian blend) here is by far the best I have had. The owner is also very attentive and nice.

It is such a great coffee shop that I sincerely do hope it won't be crowded by too many tourists (well to be fair, I'm a tourist myself).

Practical Tips for Visiting Cafes Near Barcelona Cathedral

Navigating the dining culture in the Gothic Quarter is slightly different than in other parts of the city, and knowing a few local customs will enhance your experience significantly. The area is dense, and tables are often small, so understanding the flow of service will help you blend in. Here are a few essential tips to ensure you get the most out of your coffee break near the Cathedral.

1. Know the Coffee Lingo
While you can order a standard "café con leche," embracing local terminology helps. A "cortado" is an espresso cut with a splash of milk, while a "café solo" is a straight espresso. If you want an iced coffee in the summer, ask for a "café con hielo," which usually comes with a glass of ice to pour it over.

2. Timing is Everything
Spanish meal times differ from the rest of Europe. If you want a quiet coffee, avoid the rush between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM when locals grab their breakfast before work. Alternatively, visiting during the late afternoon lull, around 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, offers a peaceful break before the evening tapas crowd arrives.

3. Understand the Terrace Surcharge
In Spain, it is common for cafes to charge a slightly higher price for sitting on a terrace compared to standing or sitting at the bar. This is the "terraza" fee. If you are on a budget or just want a quick shot, drink your coffee standing at the bar like a true local; it is often significantly cheaper.

4. Look for "Tostada con Tomate"
To eat like a local, pair your morning coffee with "pan con tomate" or a "tostada." This is bread rubbed with fresh tomato, drizzled with olive oil, and sprinkled with salt. It is the quintessential Catalan breakfast and far more authentic than a croissant.

5. Cash is Still King (Sometimes)
While most modern cafes and roasters accept credit cards, some of the older, traditional granjas or smaller bakeries in the Gothic Quarter may have a minimum spend for card payments or prefer cash. It is always wise to carry a €10 or €20 note just in case you stumble into a hidden gem that operates on a cash-only basis.

The beauty of the area around Barcelona Cathedral is that it rewards the curious. Don’t be afraid to wander down a narrow alley if you hear the clinking of cups or smell fresh pastries; that is often where the magic happens. Taking a break here is not just about refueling; it is about soaking in the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most historic neighborhoods.

Whether you choose a rooftop terrace with a view of the spires or a dimly lit stone cellar that has been serving coffee for over a century, you are participating in a local tradition. The pace is slower here, the conversations are louder, and the coffee is almost always better than you expect. Enjoy the pause, and let the city reveal itself to you one cup at a time.
