10 Best Tapas Bars Near Barcelona Cathedral

The narrow, winding streets surrounding Barcelona Cathedral carry the scent of aged stone, sizzling garlic, and cured ham. This Gothic Quarter neighborhood is a living museum, but it is also a thriving culinary playground where locals and savvy travelers pause for a bite between historic sites.

While many visitors get trapped in tourist-centric spots on La Rambla, the real magic happens on the side streets where the crowds thin out. Here, the concept of "ir de tapas" is a ritual, a way to slow down and enjoy the city’s rhythm one small plate at a time.

Finding a seat at a bustling bar, ordering a caña (small beer) or a glass of vermouth, and pointing at the glistening display of montaditos is an essential Barcelona experience. The area around the Cathedral offers an incredible density of options, from historic institutions to modern gastrobars.

Because this district is so compact, you can easily hop between several establishments in a single evening. A proper tapeo involves standing at the bar, sharing plates, and engaging with the fast-moving, often theatrical, bartenders.

The key is knowing which doorways lead to authentic, high-quality bites rather than pre-frozen patatas bravas. We have navigated the labyrinthine alleys to identify spots that balance atmosphere, history, and culinary integrity.

Whether you are looking for a quick bite between sightseeing or a long, lingering evening of food and wine, this guide has you covered. Here are the standout tapas bars located within a short walk of the Barcelona Cathedral.

The main reason I wanted to visit this place was to try the patatas bravas, and they definitely lived up to the hype, they were delicious! The server was friendly and welcoming, and happily served the sauces on the side when we asked. I also really liked the overall vibe of the restaurant. My only downside was that it was quite noisy, and it felt too hot inside, even with indoor seating. Other than that, it was a great experience.

The tastiest tapas and giant drinks perfect for the evening! We absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is so pleasant and perfectly complements the Gothic Quarter. You can also take some really great photos here.

It's a nice tapas bar with a cool atmosphere. The staff is really nice and the taste is really good too. The prices are Okey if you are willing to pay between 10-20€ for 1-2 meal. I would recommend for it to be tried!

Stopped here while exploring El Call mostly because I fell in love with the giant ancient candle at the entrance and ended up staying for the atmosphere, the food, and the people watching from my perfect little bar seat by the door. The sangria was so strong I couldn’t finish it… and honestly, if I had, I’d probably still be wandering the streets of Barcelona speaking a completely made-up language. I paired it with the octopus with miso sauce and mashed potato, small tapas portion, big flavor. Great service, cozy space, and exactly the kind of place you hope to accidentally find while traveling. Will absolutely be back.
Alina Puzyrevska★★★★★
We tried iberico ham, anchovies with tomatos and crispsy bread. Lemonade was amazing! Very sour and natural in taste. Sangria was very rich in flavour. Cheesecake was one of the best I ever had! Recommend this place!

This was a great late night find. Delicious food and friendly staff. It’s a little cramped inside but it’s a really cool space. My only complaint is getting regularly dripped on from what I assume to be condensation from the ac duct. We got La Verde Salad: 😊 so refreshing Hummus with Lamb: 🥰 10/10 my favorite of the night Zaalouk: 🤗 so delicious Crispy flat bread: 😶 the crisp was there but the flavor wasn’t my thing. It was great with the Zaalouk though. 😊🤗🥰😶 would recommend

We were in the area and wanted to grab a quick bite before we ended our day. My partner wanted to try the paella so we looked up the closest in the area and arrived at this restaurant. For the tapas, we got calamari which came with a side of zesty mayo, but it was overall very bland. For the croquettes, the menu states we can have either ham or chicken but the waitress was able to give us 2 of each. They were very good with a nice crunch and super flavorful. As our entree, I got the Catalan grilled chicken with plum sauce, which was a lot more juicy than I expected for grilled chicken! It tasted more like rotisserie chicken, but the plum sauce was more sweet than I expected and got overwhelming towards the end. My partner got the mixed seafood paella and the rice was nice and fluffy, however the amount of seafood was minimal.

The food is excellent, and the service is outstanding. The paella is the best I've had—perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and definitely a must-try. The staff are friendly and attentive, making the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be coming back! Thank you Carolina for the great service ♥️

A small (easy to miss) restaurant with an interesting concept. Before you enter, you first select the price tier, which differs by # of dishes, drinks and other options. They then present your tapas as a mystery box. While some may see this as a risk, we did see this as quite cool of concept. You REALLY have to believe in your tapas to be able to do this. So without any disappointment, our food came and it was delicious all around. Everything is cooked perfectly and flavorful. Not overwhelmingly salty unlike some of the other places we been and they truly delivered the value they promised at the door. Overall we had a quite enjoyable night and left the restaurant quite pleased! One thing to note, the restaurant is def crowded. The space is very small and they crammed as much table as they can in there. If that puts you off, please reconsider.
Robert Dahlström★★★★★
A nice tourist concept where you get to pay a set amount for different menus. We tried the low-tier one with a starter and 8 taps and two shots. It was more than enough for two people and we thought almost all of the tapas tasted good. A reasonably priced bottle of wine and the menu set us back just under 70 euros, which is a good price for all we got. The staff was friendly and did a great job too.
Jessica Friday★★★★★
We were given a recommendation to go here! I’m so glad we did 10/10 enjoyed everything we ate! We are from the tapas menu which had lots of variety. Mood lighting 10/10. Small intimate space.

(honestly 10 out of 5) Absolutely unforgettable experience in Barcelona Bodega Biarritz 1881 is everything you hope to find when travelling and so much more. The place is small, cosy, warm and full of character, but what truly makes it exceptional is the people. The staff are simply magnificent. They do not just serve food, they create a full experience. Every interaction felt genuine, thoughtful and incredibly personal. They honestly deserve an award for what they do here. From the cocktails through to the beers, tapas and paella, everything was exceptional. Every detail on the table felt carefully considered. It is not just about the food, which was absolutely delicious, it is about the care, the attention and those little touches that make the whole experience unforgettable. I do not think I have ever had such a memorable and heartfelt dining experience. You can genuinely feel that this place is made with love. It stood out as the best experience in Barcelona for me. If I ever go back to Barcelona, it would be for this place. Just WOW. Go and try it.

We had lunch here with my kids and really enjoyed the experience. We ordered the grilled squid, grilled beef, chicken escalope, fries, and spaghetti carbonara, along with mojitos, iced tea, and German cola. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. The restaurant is in a great location, the service was fast and friendly, and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. Overall, it was a very pleasant meal, and I would happily visit again.

After sightseeing nearby, we decided to stop here for dinner before heading back to our hotel. It was definitely worth the stop. We ordered the mixed olives as a starter, sauteed mushrooms and paella. The sauteed mushrooms were a great side to the seafood paella, which was delicious and had just the right amount of seafood (shrimp, squid, mussels, and clams). The food came out pretty quickly. The servers were personable and were able to communicate with us in English and through my very elementary Spanish.
Neville Forsythe II★★★★☆
This place was recommended. We came around 7 o’clock on Sunday. We did not have to wait for a table. We decided to sit inside to take a bath, some of the shade and the coolness. The seafood paella was really good. You can definitely taste the seafood in it. This is highly intentional and delicious. We also had the mushrooms and olives. Very delicious. Hard to mess that up. In all, it was a very enjoyable experience. If you speak Spanish, it is a little easier to communicate, however, some of the staff speak some English. I prefer to communicate in Spanish while there (although I am not great at it 😊).

We absolutely loved this place. At first, we thought it might be just another tourist spot because of its popularity, but it truly exceeded our expectations. The food was excellent — well-executed, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Everything we tried was delicious, and the quality was consistently high. The service was equally impressive: attentive, friendly, and professional without being intrusive. A special mention to Sattar, who took great care of us. He was incredibly warm, helpful, and genuinely kind, which made the whole experience even more memorable. Overall, this was a fantastic dining experience and far better than we expected. Definitely a place we’d happily return to and confidently recommend.
Alice★★★☆☆
SADLY, DISAPPOINTED WITH THE TAPAS I was very disappointed with my experience here, especially given the high 4.8-star rating and 15,000+ reviews. Unfortunately, the food simply didn’t live up to the hype and felt quite mediocre overall. The garlic shrimp had decent flavor but was overcooked. The fried artichokes were the biggest letdown, as they had many hard, woody pieces that were impossible to eat and had to be discarded. Additionally, the peppers were very bland and lacked any real seasoning or flavor. While the staff was friendly, the service was a bit underwhelming, but perhaps that was because it was near your closing time. Food does come out fairly quickly though. Maybe the paella or other main dishes are better, but the two tapas and the shrimp I had sadly were definitely not worth it for €26.35 (~$31 USD). Careful what you order.

There was such a wide variety of tapas, and every dish we tried was absolutely delicious! Among the seafood tapas, the octopus with potatoes stood out—the octopus was incredibly tender, and the combination was perfect. The Spanish omelette was simple yet had that classic, comforting flavor that feels truly timeless. Not only was the food amazing, but the service was as well. Adam, one of the staff members, was very friendly and welcoming. He even treated us to a complimentary shot at the end, which made the whole experience even more fun. Highly recommended!

Sometimes the best dining experiences are the ones you never planned. We popped into Bodega La Palma for a quick drink and ended up staying to enjoy a couple of beautifully prepared dishes in one of Barcelona's most atmospheric historic bodegas. Established in 1935, it still has the feel of a true neighbourhood institution, where locals gather over vermouth and wine while visitors are made to feel just as welcome. We started with the excellent house vermouth before moving on to a bottle of Sensaltes from Celler de les Auzines in DO Penedès. Made from Xarel·lo and Macabeu, it was fresh, crisp and wonderfully mineral, pairing perfectly with the food. To accompany the wine, we ordered the Brandada de bacallà fumat amb tòfona (smoked cod brandade with truffle), a silky, creamy spread with delicate smoky notes and just the right touch of truffle, served warm with thick slices of toasted rustic bread. It was comforting, rich and impossible to stop eating. The standout dish was the Melós de porc ibèric a la sidra (Iberian pork cheeks braised in cider). The pork was incredibly tender, melting apart with every bite, while the light cider broth and vegetables gave the dish depth without overpowering the quality of the meat. Crisp vegetable chips on top added a welcome contrast in texture. The atmosphere is exactly what you hope to find in a traditional Barcelona bodega—warm, lively and unpretentious, with a genuine mix of locals and visitors enjoying good food and excellent local wines. Bodega La Palma proves that you don't need a lavish meal to have a memorable experience. Whether you stop in for a vermouth, a glass of Catalan wine or a few dishes to share, it's a place that captures the authentic spirit of the Gothic Quarter and one we'd happily return to.
Danial Huggard★★★★★
We walked through the narrow streets, until we found a restaurant that we felt represented the authenticity of Barcelona in our minds and we were not disappointed. From the moment we entered, the service from Dana was fantastic. Their recommendations for the drinks were great and she even understood our broken Spanish and communicated comfortably in English with us. The food… well not enough adjectives can be used to show our approval. We received exactly what we sort with authentic tapas and a meal in Barcelona. We are so happy we found Bodega La Palma. Highly recommended.
Mathieu Hellebaut★★★★★
Very cosy and welcoming tapas bar, wasn’t crowded at all, since it was a special day for Barcelona. That day people are celebrating Sant Juan, and it was also a very hot Thursday. The waiter is very welcoming, friendly and sexy. The tapas were amazingly delicious. I would definitely go there every after work if I was living in Barcelona. Great vibe and tasty tapas. And of course you have to order the vermouth !
EH★★☆☆☆
we met an expat patron eating at table next to us, so we ordered what he suggested as he kept raving about it, well the steak/beef entree came to table cold, and the other 2 plates a seafood & fried appetizers weren’t good. don’t know what happened with our order but very puzzled by the reviews.
Steve Fotedar★★★★★
This restaurant is tucked in the corner of a quiet alleyway. We stumbled across it and the host was extremely welcoming. Our server, Christian, gave us wonderful recommendations including the flavourful mussels. Between the tapas, cava, and warm atmosphere, we could see why this is a place locals gravitate to time and time again.

One of the best meals I've had in Barcelona. Going back there for round two tomorrow. Alex was wonderful, she gave me the best recommendations and made my experience there memorable. Doubt anything on the menu is bad though which is why im going back to try some different items on the menu. Definitely try the tapas of the month, the pork shoulder and also the octopus. The way every bite tasted made it seem like each tapas plate was a full meal because of how intentional the flavors were. Forgive me for my half eaten picture of my food my mouth ate first. Also the vibe of the place was enjoyable for a night out in the town.

The vibes here are immaculate. Guadi-esque interior design, tavern style wooden furniture and the best tunes of the 1950s. Perfect for a casual night out. Fresh and seasonal ingredients provided for a top notch tapas experience. The seasonal grilled leeks, smoked anchovies, ensalda burrata and cheese board gave us a great evening to remember!

Absolutely loved this place! It has that rare, genuinely authentic atmosphere that is getting harder and harder to find. There is a huge selection of tapas, everything we tried was delicious, and the choice of traditional local drinks is fantastic. The people are incredibly warm, friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. But above all, it’s the vibe. Lively, unpretentious, local and completely real. No touristy feeling, no trying too hard, just great food, great drinks, lovely people and exactly the kind of atmosphere you come to Catalonia hoping to find. A little gem. We visited La Plata on June 1st, 2026. We had the nice house Vermouth, and some good Tapas. La Plata is one of Barcelona’s classic tapas bars, a place where simplicity and tradition come together beautifully. With its small, lively interior and old-fashioned atmosphere, it feels like stepping into a piece of the city’s culinary history. The menu is famously short, allowing the kitchen to focus on a handful of dishes prepared with consistency and care. The house vermouth is a highlight and an essential part of the experience. Served in the traditional style, it is aromatic, slightly bittersweet, and wonderfully refreshing. The tapas are fresh, flavorful, and unpretentious. Favorites such as fried fish, tomato salad, and cured meats showcase quality ingredients rather than elaborate presentation. Portions are ideal for sharing, encouraging diners to sample a little of everything.
Hans Hamann★★★★★
Simple and small, with good quality food and wine. This is the perfect place for a quick tapa and a small wine. Flavors are good, ambiance is good and whatever you order, it is served super fast. Can be crowded and then 5 mins later you have quite space. Nice spot for locals, or those who visit Barcelona very briefly.
Nikolas Lecce★★★★★
Absolutely delicious! Extraordinarily simple and quick! Get the vino rosado to drink, pescadito, anchovy, pincho de butifara and salad. Salad is a must! Great atmosphere, very simple. Magnifico!
Mirko Sovran★★★★★
If you want to experience Barcelona like a local, Tapas Bar La Plata is the absolute closest you can get. The vibe is incredibly urban and authentic—packed with locals, which tells you everything you need to know. The tapas are simple but absolutely spectacular. We had the classic tomato bread with salted fish (anchovies) and the perfectly fried small fish (pescaíto frito). Everything pair beautifully with their house wine on tap and the traditional homemade vermouth. It’s loud, lively, and completely genuine. A must-visit if you want a true taste of the city’s real culture!
Zhanna Leonteva★★★★★
Very unique place, closer to iconic. The menu is small and the dishes are rather simple, however the concept behind it is that the dishes don’t need to be sophisticated to have a unique and delicious taste, and this places backs it up with its mastery of food preparation. It’s one of those places that will always come to mind when thinking about the most memorable eating experiences. A must visit.

How to Navigate the Tapas Scene Like a Local

The difference between a good meal and a great one near the Cathedral often comes down to timing and etiquette. The area is heavily trafficked, so knowing how to blend in with the local flow will significantly improve your experience and the quality of service you receive.

  • Embrace the Early Evening Window: Spanish dinner is famously late. If you arrive at 6:00 PM, you will often find empty restaurants. The prime time for tapas is between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM for locals, but arriving at 7:30 PM is a great strategy to secure a spot at popular bars before the rush.
  • Look for the Napkin Litter: A genuine, popular tapas bar often has a floor scattered with napkins, olive pits, and toothpicks. This isn’t a sign of poor hygiene; it is a badge of honor indicating high turnover and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere where you are encouraged to drop your trash on the floor.
  • Order the "Especialidad de la Casa": Do not just stick to generic patatas bravas (though you should try those too). Ask the bartender, "¿Cuál es la especialidad?" Every reputable bar has a signature dish—be it a specific bomba, a unique conserva, or a secret-recipe croqueta—that showcases the chef’s skill.
  • Stand at the Bar if Possible: While table service is comfortable, standing at the bar puts you right in the action. You can see the fresh seafood on display, point directly at what looks good, and get much faster service from the waiters.
  • Pay at the End: Unlike in some countries where you pay as you order, in Barcelona tapas bars, you typically run a tab. Even if you are standing and moving around the bar, the staff is keeping track of you. Paying the total sum when you are finished is standard practice.

Navigating the culinary landscape of the Gothic Quarter is as much about the atmosphere as it is the food. The clinking of glasses, the rapid-fire Spanish, and the aroma of olive oil create a sensory experience that defines Barcelona.

Stepping into one of these tapas bars is stepping into the heartbeat of the city. Whether you choose a historic bodega that has barely changed in a century or a sleek, modern spot reinventing Catalan classics, you are participating in a tradition that defines Barcelona’s social fabric. Take your time, order generously, and enjoy the vibrant chaos of dining near the Cathedral.
