Sitting in the quiet, lamp-lit shadows of the Born district, the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar stands as one of Barcelona’s most beloved architectural treasures. Unlike the towering Gothic Quarter cathedral, this 14th-century masterpiece is often called the “Cathedral of the Sea,” a nickname earned by its connection to the dockworkers and merchants who funded its construction. Its soaring, uncluttered interior and magnificent stained-glass rose window offer a moment of profound peace away from the city’s busier tourist trails.
For travelers, the allure of Santa Maria del Mar extends beyond its spiritual and historical significance; it is also a gateway to one of Barcelona’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. Staying nearby means you are steps away from the boutique-lined Passeig del Born, the cultural wonders of the Picasso Museum, and the green oasis of the Parc de la Ciutadella. The area manages to feel both centrally located and authentically local, avoiding the overwhelming tourist crush found further down Via Laietana.
Choosing the right accommodation here is crucial to curating the perfect Barcelona experience. The narrow, medieval streets surrounding the basilica are largely pedestrianized, which creates a serene environment but also presents logistical challenges for taxis and luggage. Whether you are looking for a romantic boutique hideaway, a family-friendly apartment, or a luxury stay with rooftop views, the options are as varied as the history itself.
To help you navigate this enchanting labyrinth, we have compiled a comprehensive guide to the best places to stay. We have evaluated these properties based on their proximity to the basilica, the quality of their amenities, historical charm, and their ability to provide a quiet night’s sleep despite the vibrant neighborhood buzz. Our goal is to ensure your visit to the Born district is as comfortable as it is memorable.
This curated list spans a range of budgets and styles, ensuring there is a perfect match for every type of traveler. From converted medieval palaces to sleek, modern design hotels, each property offers a unique lens through which to view the city. You won’t have to sacrifice comfort for location; these selections prove that you can have both within a short stroll of the basilica’s steps.
When reviewing these hotels, we considered the practicalities of the location. Proximity to the Jaume I metro station, the availability of 24-hour front desks, and the presence of elevators in these historic buildings are often make-or-break factors for international visitors. We have prioritized establishments that blend old-world aesthetics with modern conveniences, ensuring your stay is hassle-free from check-in to checkout.
Below is our selection of the twelve best hotels near Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, each offering a distinct atmosphere and exceptional service. Whether you are waking up to the sound of church bells or enjoying a glass of cava on a hidden terrace, these properties promise an unforgettable stay in the heart of Barcelona’s old town.

We really enjoyed our stay at Catalonia Portal de l'Angel. The property was beautiful and in the perfect location. The rooms were quiet and clean and the staff were helpful and kind. The room service was also very reasonably priced. We will definitely stay here again!

We had a wonderful stay for 2 nights at Hotel Catalonia Portal de l'Àngel.
The location is hard to beat, right in the heart of Barcelona, just a short walk from the Gothic Quarter, Plaça de Catalunya, and many of the city's top attractions. Despite being on a lively shopping street, the hotel feels peaceful and relaxing once you're inside.
The rooms were spotless, comfortable, and well maintained, and the staff were welcoming and professional throughout my stay. One of the hotel's highlights is its beautiful interior courtyard with a swimming pool, a quiet oasis that's perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the city. The breakfast offered plenty of fresh and tasty options, making it a great way to start the day.
We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, centrally located hotel with excellent service in Barcelona.

Location is 10/10, amazing central location.
Rooms are nice and clean and comfortable.
Hotel has a bar, and a massive bonus having a pool, albeit a small one.
I didn't have the breakfast at the hotel, although it has the option for one which is great.
Check-in was smooth, and it's a great hotel for the price point. I would definitely recommend.

We are a couple from Australia in our 50s and have stayed in many places over the years. In our opinion, this accommodation would easily qualify as a four- five-star property in Australia. Although it’s listed as a three-star in Spain, don’t let that discourage you—it far exceeded our expectations. Book with confidence; you won’t be disappointed.
We would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfortable and stylish stay. A well-deserved 10/10!

We stayed for 3 Nights, and yes, the Location is very good to do pretty much anything in Barcelona. BUT for the Price it was disappointing… we had a balcony, but you could’nt really open the door because there was construction work going on outside which was extremely loud. The Bathroom in our room had black mold on the ceiling which was really disturbing. There were multiple a cockroaches crawling around in the lobby and the female receptionist did not care at all. When we arrived there was a young man at the reciption who was really friendly and spoke good english tho. Also on our floor there were dirty dishes which just stayed there for 2 days, maybe more. Also DO NOT buy tickets for the hop on hop off bus tour which is advertised at the reception, there is a second one in Barcelona calles Bus Touristic which is much better. We used the one they sold at the reception and often had to wait 20mins until one came while we saw many of the other bus company stop at the same spot. Breakfast in the Hotel was okay, the pool area is small and not very cozy.

We had a wonderful stay at the hotel! Everything was clean, comfortable, and the service was excellent.
A special thank you to Daniel at the front desk, who welcomed us with a warm smile and was incredibly kind, helpful, and professional throughout our stay. He made us feel at home from the moment we arrived.
Highly recommended!

Absolutely beautiful room in a central location with so much to do nearby. The staff were fantastic, especially the bellman Manuel. He went out of his way multiple times to assist us during our stay. We would happily stay again.

Wow this hotel was amazing!!! We had 19 family members staying here. Angel was fantastic and took care of our luggage and taxi services. The hotel is located in the center of fabulous shopping and dining. We had people ranging from age 5 to 75 and everyone had an amazing experience. The rooms were so spacious and clean. The shower was so luxurious. The pool was perfect. We highly recommend!!! We want to come back!!!

We stayed at the hotel and were promised a late check-out in advance, but on the day of departure they denied it even though it was written on the website. In addition, we requested separate beds in advance and it took them over 3 days to arrange it, and every day they moved us to another room. The service was beyond reproach and without consideration for the customer. The only employee who cared about us and was empathetic and considerate was Angel.

This Hotel was amazing. Clean and spacious, great location to food and shopping, very close to the Basilica of the Sagrada Family, and in proximity to the beach. The staff was very gracious and helpful, the pool was amazing as well. A BIG THANK YOU TO ANGEL, he was courteous, helpful and had some great recommendations for us. Angel went above and beyond to assist in coordinating 19 people from the hotel to the airport and it was seamless. I highly recommend this hotel and if I ever return to Barcelona, I will stay here again. Thank you Angel.

The hotel is very conveniently located, just a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya. Our room had a balcony facing the street, which I personally loved, as it gave a wonderful feeling of being part of the city.
I would describe the hotel as a very strong three-star hotel. It is not a four-star property, but it certainly exceeds what I would normally expect from a three-star hotel. The rooms were exceptionally clean, tidy, and well maintained.
The breakfast was outstanding and deserves special mention. I am particularly sensitive to the quality of ham and cheese, as we have very high standards in that regard, and I can honestly say that both were excellent. Overall, the breakfast selection and quality were superb.
Another feature I appreciated was the blackout curtains. They completely blocked out the light, so there was no need for any additional darkening. Even though our room overlooked the street, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was. I did not hear any traffic noise during the night.
The hotel also has a small rooftop pool, perfect for cooling off on a warm day. Unfortunately, we did not spend much time there, apart from refreshing ourselves on our first day. There were quite a few young people enjoying the rooftop area, socializing and having drinks, which created a pleasant atmosphere. The view from the top of the hotel is also very nice and worth a visit.

Location: 5/5; Cleanliness: 5/5; Design & Aesthetics: 4/5
Walk outside and you are in the heart of Las Ramblas. Literally steps to great restaurants, shopping, the Universitat Metro station on the L2 line, parks and sites. Our room had a balcony overlooking the busy street but the noise inside the room never rose above a dull rustling. Air conditioning was in fact TOO COLD! A first in a review for me! Lots of closet space and a mini fridge. Bathroom shower was fantastic. Different rooms have different amenities however. Our friends had single rooms and they were more outdated than ours (we had a double one bedroom suite). The pool on the roof was great, not too cold. Very clean. There is a bar up there with basic cocktails and beer and the bartender was so kind and took great care of us.

I’ve had a really positive experience with this hotel. I took my husband here for his birthday and the service from start to finish even prior to arriving to Barcelona has been incredible. Very polite, professional and fast responses. The reception staff at the hotel also very welcoming. I thought that it may be abit noisy due to being on a main road but it was not the case at all. Great location aswell with easy transport links on the doorstep would highly recommend this hotel - Nas

An ideal location to access major tourist spots in the city. However terrible services with minimal hospitality and staffs with no empathy towards tourists. For example upon check in, I tried to figure out the payment on my phone and the staff was impatient and aggressively tried to grab my phone to find the information I was looking for. Check in receptionist also told us that we have breakfast included, and when we had a coffee and an orphanage juice in the next day morning, they now say BF is not included. We did not eat any foods and quietly went back to the room. At check out, they charged the cost of a cup of coffee and a glass of juice. I felt they don’t have spirit of welcoming tourists. Maybe this is the attitude what Barcelona as a whole city feels towards tourists today.
Terrible in-room wifi, most of time under 1mb/s or does not work at all. We changed the room and still the same. Bed is rather hard and pillows are oddly long and flat. Comfort is not what I would describe for this hotel.

Hotel Lleo is one of the hotels with excellent customer service and the best communication. I received emails from the hotel to let me know what to expect and information about my booking and possible for a upgrade. I was there early and they were able to check in my room with a room available. The hotel room I have is bigger than most of the hotel rooms in Europe I have stayed in before. I can walk to many tourist attractions from this hotel easily or get a taxi at the front door easily.

We had a wonderful time here - the staff members were all very friendly and helpful, the room was great (we chose to book a room with a cathedral view, which was lovely). Room types were clearly communicated on their website, and we chose to book the cathedral room. There is some noise, but you should expect that in a central, city location like this - and I was actually impressed with how much noise the glass balcony doors filtered out when closed. We slept very well.
We booked directly on their website (which you should always do!) and they gave us complimentary access to the mini bar (one stocking of it) for doing so. A unique perk!
Location was great, with the full acknowledgement that it's a highly concentrated tourism area. You can easily walk around the Gothic Quarter and El Born from the hotel, and you also have nearby access to the metro, which we utilized via an Hola Barcelona card, which we found really easy. We also walked down to the beach in Barcelonetta, which is a bit longer of a walk, but a pleasant one.

The hotel is beautifuly decorated. Premium finishes in the lobby, restaurant and rooms. The rooftop bar is absolutely beautiful. Location is in a premium spot, but it is exceptionally busy around the hotel. We were awoken all through the night, multiple nights in a row by delivery trucks parked right outside our room. The hotel staff was very good about moving us to a different room after the first night. The second room was just as noisy. I have never, ever, stayed in a hotel that was as noisy as this one. I am not referring to other guests making noise in the hallway. This would be normal, and expected.
There are better value hotels, within a few minutes walk of this location that would be a better option for your money. We spent top dollar to stay at this hotel and feel we overpaid.

An excellent rooftop bar with an amazing atmosphere! Right from the entrance, my friend and I were welcomed by Anuar, who was very friendly. Melanie is super friendly, cheerful, and positive—she's a absolute pleasure to talk to. And a huge thank you to Chus for her incredible kindness, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail with the guests. Such genuine service and human warmth are really hard to find these days.

The breakfast was the best breakfast I've ever had at a hotel ever! Our room didn't have a view but was still very nice. Loved my stay here!

Beautiful Hotel with modern amenities, super clean, quiet and great staff.
Overall beautiful Hotel! Would absolutely stay here again.
Beautiful lobby, staff is all super nice and helpful, very accommodating for luggage hold (great for an early arrival), rooms are all newer, clean and very updated. Amazing balcony views as well right from your room. Open the door and stand out on your balcony.
5 star rating for overall appearance, cleanliness and stay. Loved it!!
Location is directly across from Barcelona Cathedral which offers amazing views, great vibe, great dining along with easy access to many tours, shopping dining and of course the Catedral de Barcelona, which was absolutely stunning! (what a great Cathedral, must see!)
The outdoor restaurant has a great view of the Cathedral and is great to relax, grab a drink or tapas after the Cathedral. Its clean, covered for shade and very relaxing.
Rooftop; Visited the rooftop bar which offers impressive views and an alternate option. The rooftop is open to the public at a cost. As a guest you dont have to pay and you are prioritized seating. One suggestion I have is the music/dj was super loud so hard to enjoy conversation. We stayed for a little bit for the experience.
Breakfast and Food: they do a great job with presentation and what they offer. Great dining experience to take in also some local options. It's an overall better quality of eating and dining experience than in the US. (That can be said for alot..well actually most of places in Europe)
We really liked our stay and experience alot at Hotel Lamaro. Wish we had more time than 1 night.
Thanks to all the staff for making our stay wonderful.

Stayed here for 2 nights with my son (18) and friend. What a great hotel, clean, well kept and friendly staff. The rooms were well equipped and had great air-conditioning perfect when coming back form 30K step walk around the the city in the perfect summer weather. Location was great, just what we needed. People say a little noisy, I say you are in the centre of a bustling city and the noise is not that bad at all, and the ring of the church bell echoing in the background, just perfect! Would fully recommend as a great base for sight seeing! Thank you so much!

I have arrived very early than check-in time and the receptionist gave me a very warm welcoming. They gave me the first room ready earlier than expected, offering hot tea while I was waiting and providing me a momentarily place to sleep. Reception is very small area; however the interior’s room is super modern, clean, the bathroom is quite elegant, toiletries good quality, and the shower is big enough for one person and actually can fit two people.

We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. There were a bit of mixed reviews regarding space, but we got the triple room and it was really spacious. The room overall was really great, including the bathroom was really clean.
Also wasn’t as noisy as reviews made it out to be, actually I think it was relatively quiet for the area it’s in.
Highly recommend and central to everything

The location is at Rambla shopping street. Very convenient although you may need to watch out for people at the alley. Nearby are nice restaurants. We came slightly earlier and they were kind enough to extend the room for us. The room is spacious but the mattress is not firm. I like the roommate a big sofa.

Excellent spot in the middle of the city, plenty of modes of transportation near the hotel. As a solo traveler, it was quite the cozy accomodation and suited the needs for a place to stay. Room service came everyday to clean the place and the free water was a bonus. However, there wasn't much of a view if you were unlucky to get one of the inside facing rooms. The elevator was so tiny that you're better off taking the stairs if you have luggage. Additionally, roaches kept appearing in the bathroom, but at least there was AC!

What a beautiful hotel and relaxing space. We felt safe, welcomed and loved our stay. The roof top pool and drinks was perfect to relax and see the city after travel days. Location is great. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and for those who don’t speak Spanish or Catalan, the staff speak English well. The hotel also hosts an amazing Michelin restaurant - Batea.
For the nightly rate, the property though could use a bit of brightening up. The rooms are dark even in the summer. The furniture is well maintained but somewhat dated. The carpets perhaps are there for sound dampening but they could also do with an upgrade.

Worst hotel experience ever!!!
Our experience was bad enough that I seriously question how this hotel has such a high Google rating.
The property is old and poorly maintained. There was a strong musty/moldy smell in the hallways and in our room, and the actual condition of the hotel felt very different from the impression created by the photos and reviews online.
At check-in, we were suddenly told we had to pay an additional fee because we were traveling with a child. This charge had not been clearly disclosed beforehand. When we asked the staff to show us the written policy that justified the fee, they could not provide anything clear. It felt like a surprise charge imposed after we had already arrived.
The front desk interaction was also extremely unpleasant. The staff member was initially arrogant, dismissive, and unwilling to properly explain the situation. The way we were treated made us seriously wonder whether we were being treated differently because of our race. Only after I became angry did they suddenly start taking our concerns seriously. Their attitude did improve afterward, but basic respect should not require a confrontation.
Then, during approximately 35°C / 95°F heat, the hotel lost power for about five hours, from around 5 PM to 10 PM. No normal electricity and no air conditioning during one of the hottest parts of the day. The hotel told us this was a neighborhood issue. We walked outside and saw surrounding buildings and businesses with electricity. From what we could observe, this hotel appeared to be the only one without power.
Problems can happen at any hotel. What is unacceptable is poor maintenance, surprise charges, dismissive service, and explanations that do not match what guests can see for themselves.
Do not be misled by the high rating. I would absolutely stay somewhere else in Barcelona.
Joanne Freed★★★★★
Neus was an exceptional hotel employee. She helped me on numerous occasions. She always smiled and was so friendly. Her English skills were excellent. She was willing to recommend specific places when I asked for her for ideas.
I know that that kind of work that she does can be exhausting at times. But, it makes an incredible difference to a guest to have that kind of welcoming attitude.
The hotel was lovely and in a great location. I would say that when I had breakfast I have found the eggs to be cold and watery and therefore not tasty. Even having two different egg styles might be nice. The banana was green- why put out a fruit that could not be eaten then? Could you have strawberries? How nice that would be to have with yogurt . Or to have flavored yogurt would be lovely.
I found everyone that worked in the hotel to be pleasant and friendly, but Neus is a five star employee! Please note this in her records and I hope that some acknowledgment or reward is given.

The location of Hotel Lloret Ramblas is simply exceptional—right in the middle of La Rambla! It’s the absolute perfect starting point to explore the city.
I stayed in a double room with a view directly overlooking La Rambla, and it was truly incredible. Despite the lively and central location, the room was remarkably quiet and extremely clean. I also felt very safe and at ease during my stay, thanks to their excellent video surveillance system and the fact that the reception is staffed 24/7.
The breakfast is outstanding and of high quality. The croissants are wonderfully flaky, and the coffee and cappuccinos are excellent. Alongside a wide selection of sweets, they offer plenty of great savory options too, including cold cuts, cheeses, eggs, and sausages.
However, the absolute highlight of my stay was the staff, and I want to give a very special mention to a girl at the front desk: Ivonne. She was always available, constantly smiling, welcoming, and incredibly kind. She even went out of her way to help me resolve some difficulties I encountered during my time in the city.
Barcelona is my "city of the heart", and from now on, Hotel Lloret Ramblas and Ivonne will remain in my heart as well. I will absolutely book with them again when I return. Highly recommended!

Very nice, helpful and kind front desk staff. I arrived earlier than the check in time and they were able to store my luggage while I began my Barcelona adventure. Room was nice and quiet with a balcony which was very nice especially at night. There was AC in the room and a closet for storing your items. The only thing I didn’t like was that the shower only has half a door so water spills on the floor each time you shower. Very close to the metro which is a plus. Highly recommend!

Unacceptable Experience – Not What Was Booked
Our stay at Hotel Lloret Ramblas was extremely disappointing and far below expectations.
We booked this hotel more than six months in advance and clearly indicated that we were a couple. I even took the extra step of emailing the hotel to ensure everything would be prepared correctly. Despite this, we were given a room with two separate twin beds, and one of the headboards was broken upon arrival. This shows a clear lack of attention to detail and basic quality control.
After we complained, a maintenance staff member—who was kind and professional—attempted to resolve the issue by pushing the beds together and securing them with zip ties, while also fixing the headboard. Although we appreciated his effort, this is not an acceptable or professional solution for paying guests. It felt improvised and far from the standard we expected.
The only real advantage of this hotel is its location. It is conveniently close to Plaça de Catalunya, La Boqueria Market, and the Gothic Quarter, making it easy to explore the main attractions of the city.
We did have a balcony with a view of La Rambla; however, due to ongoing construction (not the hotel’s fault), even that experience was diminished.
Overall, this stay did not meet even basic expectations. Between the incorrect room setup, broken furniture, and inadequate resolution, we cannot recommend this hotel and would not stay here again.
Navin Mahabir★★★★★
Front desk staff was helpful and great. Will hold your luggage if you drop it off early, but don't expect to be able to check-in early. Has A/C but not controllable (except for fan speed); however that was not an issue during the night. Modernly updated while maintaining older charm. Convenient and safe. Main entrance is easy to miss, so look for the name written in the wall next to small glass doors

Normal hotel, but excellent location
Our first room was quite smelly and not very comfortable, so we requested a room change. Unfortunately, there was no room available immediately, so we had to spend two nights in the same room. The next day, they were able to change our room, and the second room was much better and more comfortable.
The breakfast was the same every day and had limited vegetarian options, so there wasn’t much variety for vegetarians.
The hotel also lacks some basic in-room facilities. There is no hot water kettle, iron, or dental kit in the room. For hot water or other basic items, you need to go to reception and request them manually. The water/juice dispenser is also extremely slow, which can become frustrating when you are in a hurry.
Overall, it is a normal, basic hotel, but the biggest advantage is its location. It is right in the centre of Barcelona, making it very convenient to explore many nearby attractions and places on foot. If location is your priority, this hotel is a good choice, but don’t expect many facilities or much variety in breakfast.

This is not a true five-star hotel based upon my experience. This is an old building modified into fancy hotel and it honestly feels tacky and cheap. I stayed here as a part of the AMEX Hotel Collection to get the extra benefits. I checked in early to drop off my luggage and enjoy my day. They said they would text me when my room was available, but they never did. The AC only works on an ECO mode, so it is very slow to work. The bathtub does not offer a fully enclosed shower door or curtain, so the bathroom gets soaked everytime you shower. Bed was not that comfortable. All of the furniture was run down and given the landlord treatment by being painted over multiple times. Hardwood floors and thin walls meant I could hear all walking and everything being said in the building, even with my noise cancellation machines setup. I will say the place was clean and safe with 24/7 security in the lobby. The building is secured because you need a key to get up the elevator. It's in the heart of the city so you can access a lot by foot or transportation. I don't know if this is a normal 5 star hotel experience but I would imagine there are others out there that would offer a better well-rounded experience.
Elma Rizzo★★☆☆☆
Definitely not a 5 star hotel. We waited 40 minutes to get our car from parking and ended up doing it ourselves. When we came back, no one was available to park the car. We booked 2 rooms and got the first floor, one room had air conditioning units as its view and the other room smelled like sewer coming from the bathroom. Would definitely not stay at this hotel again.

Barcelona Eleven Terrace was easily one of the highlights of my time in the city. The drinks were exceptional! The atmosphere is just as impressive: stylish, relaxed, and with a view that makes you want to stay for hours. It strikes that perfect balance between lively and comfortable.
What truly made the experience stand out, though, was the service — especially Imran. He was attentive without being overbearing, genuinely friendly, and gave great recommendations. You can tell he really cares about the guest experience, and it makes a big difference.
Definitely a place I’d come back to and recommend to anyone visiting Barcelona.

We had a wonderful stay at NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón. The hotel was in a fantastic location, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the service throughout our stay was excellent.
A special thank you to Milouda from the breakfast restaurant. She went above and beyond every morning to make us feel welcome. She was always so kind, friendly, and incredibly helpful, especially with our family. Her warm smile and exceptional service made our breakfasts even more enjoyable and truly stood out during our stay.
Thank you, Milouda, for making our experience so memorable. You are a real asset to the NH Collection team. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Barcelona.

I’m disappointed with my stay at this so-called 5-star hotel. The only positive thing is its location, which is convenient—but unfortunately, that’s where the positives end.
The hotel itself is quite small and falls far short of what you would expect from a luxury property. The room was not properly cleaned, and there was visible mold in the shower—completely unacceptable for any hotel, let alone one claiming a 5-star standard.
While these issues were already frustrating, the worst part of the experience was the room service. We placed an order during dinner time and were told it would arrive by 9:30 PM. We specifically chose room service because we were jet-lagged and wanted to eat quickly and get some rest. Instead, we waited until 10:15 PM with no food delivered and no meaningful update. The food finally arrived around 10:30 PM. The tray with dirty dishes was left outside our room on the floor and remained there for two days—until we checked out. During that time, housekeeping and other staff passed by multiple times, yet no one took the initiative to remove the dirty dishes. Even if it wasn’t their direct responsibility, the lack of coordination or basic service awareness is surprising—at the very least, someone could have notified the appropriate team.
This level of service and lack of accountability is simply unacceptable, especially from a hotel that markets itself as upscale.
If you’re expecting a clean, comfortable, and truly 5-star experience, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.

Not sure how this hotel is classified as being a 4 star hotel, because unfortunately it lacks that 4 star feel. Let’s start from our horrible check-in experience. We arrived around 2 hours before check-in, and the young man at the reception rudely reminded us that check in is at 3pm. We knew, but never had this issue in other hotels - if not ready they allow us to leave our lugagge there. He proceeded to check if the room was ready. It wasn’t and we had to ask ourselves to leave the luggages; no info filled in or anything. We explored the area and had lunch and went back at 3pm since we wanted to freshen up before our excursion. We went up to the desk at 3:04pm, gave him our name and he informed us that it still WASN’T READY. We had an immediate reaction of dismay to which his reply was “I will check, it’s only 4 minutes after 3pm”. Excuse me, what kind of an answer is that? Thankfully his two female colleagues were much nicer and more professional and after around 15 minutes they gave us the room. The room was spacious as we had expected but we did feel that the bathroom needs some more work. The general feel of the hotel feels somewhat off and outdated.
On a more positive note, we had a very pleasant experience with one of the female receptionists (didn’t get a name) who was there in the evening. We asked for a Vanity Kit and she assisted us right away. She was also very helpful when we asked her about advice regarding what time is best to book a taxi to the airport. Honestly, others should learn a lot from her customer service skills! Small but very organised breakfast too.

Perfectly adequate. The location is unbeatable. Everything went smooth, the room was clean, the bedding comfortable, the staff friendly. Its not luxurious by any means, but it met all of our criteria.

The room was clean, spacious, and nice. I hope they provide more amenities, i asked for slippers but they do not have it. But overall, service was good!

The hotel is highly overpriced for the services and facilities provided. The room lacked basic amenities such as a dental kit, slippers, a tea/coffee kettle, and other essentials that one would normally expect at this price point.
Additionally, there was excessive noise due to construction work happening down the street, which made the stay quite unpleasant and disturbed the overall experience.
Considering the price, the facilities, and the noise, the hotel is definitely not worth the money. Overall, it was a complete waste of money and I would not recommend staying here.

I stayed at Hotel Continental Barcelona from the 7th to the 9th of March and had a really pleasant experience. The location is absolutely perfect, right on La Rambla, which makes it very easy to explore the city and reach many attractions on foot.
The staff were friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with any questions. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and I really liked the unique, colourful style of the hotel. A great bonus was the 24-hour buffet with snacks and drinks available, which is very convenient after a long day of sightseeing.
Overall, it’s a great place to stay if you want a central location, friendly atmosphere and good value in Barcelona. I would definitely stay here again.

I love this hotel, amazing people, amazing service, amazing food. Office lady Vivian was really nice and just such a clean room, this place also has amazing air conditioner systems. After a hot day walking, coming back to this hotel was just the cherry on the top.

This was a great location on Las Ramblas. We upgraded to a balcony which was nice to sit and watch the door traffic on Las Ramblas. It was also convenient to get everywhere. Unfortunately there was construction on las ramblas but it was still a great place to stay. Our upgraded balcony room was much bigger than European standards. The only drawback was the tub had a large step to get in with no handrail so be careful getting in and out of the shower. There is also a 24 hour buffet of snacks available which was nice for an afternoon snack.

We had the most amazing experience at this hotel. We have stayed in many hotels throughout our travels and this one ranks in our top 5. The service was impeccable! I had medication that needed to be kept cold and they allowed me to keep it in their refrigerator throughout our stay. The breakfast ranks in our top 3 all time best… the presentation was magazine worthy and the quality was top notch. The location of the hotel is perfect - right next to the metro station and right on the Ramblas. Our balcony had seating so we could watch all the action below while enjoying our complimentary bottle of wine. The rooms were very quiet and the beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. We would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Barcelona. We had to leave extremely early for our flight out of Barcelona, and they even packed us some breakfast so we didn’t miss out on our paid meal. We will definitely be back!!

Had a truly lovely stay. The location couldn’t be better right on La Rambla and walking distance to all the major destinations in Barcelona, which made exploring the city incredibly easy and enjoyable. The rooms were comfortable, the staff were welcoming, and the breakfast buffet was absolutely lovely with plenty options to start the day right. Overall, a perfect base for discovering Barcelona. Thank you for your hospitality.

What a great hotel. We had a balcony room with two bed (can be made into a king). It was comfortable, clean and quiet at night. The addition of the refrigerator and complimentary bottle of wine was a delight! The breakfast was a stunning presentation of local foods and so fresh. Our Concierge, Maria, was a fantastic resource for setting us up with maps and even lining up a Flamenco show for us. She was precise, friendly and very kind.

My husband and I had a last minute of unfortunate events with a missed ferry due to late flight. We found Hotel Sehrs by pure chance and we were treated so well by your staff. Maria, Marila and Tracy and the young gentleman at the front desk were kind, patient and very helpful. Our room was fantastic. The Sky Bar and bartender was phenomenal after a long travel day. Breakfast was full of options and well stocked by an attentive staff. We would 100% recommend to anyone and we will definitely return. One of the best places we have ever stayed in Barcelona!
Leon Ashley★★★☆☆
The staff were lovely, especially Maria on check in. But the other reviews have me confused. My issues are with the facilities.
My room had a broken back door, dirty walls and furniture. The tap rotated 360... Every night there was very loud scraping for about an hour above my room (sounded like tables being dragged around).
The AC made an interesting noise.
The walls were thin so you can hear everything, and it's a busy place. The view was nothing special at all.
I asked for an iron, 50 minutes later one turned up that had the iron plate snapped in half and thick burn marks on the bottom. I tested it on something unimportant and it was instantly ruined.
This for me was at best a place to rest your head for someone on a party trip. Not a business hotel or somewhere to spend time relaxing.
For those in the UK I'd put it just above a premier inn level
Tips for Choosing the Perfect Stay Near the Basilica
Finding the right hotel in a historic district like El Born requires a bit of strategy, as the neighborhood’s character can often blur the lines between charming and challenging. The narrow streets and historic architecture mean that amenities and accessibility can vary wildly from one doorway to the next. To help you book with confidence and avoid the common pitfalls of old-town accommodations, we have outlined essential considerations that will ensure your stay matches your travel style and needs.
Book Early for High Season
El Born is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Barcelona, and the best boutique hotels fill up months in advance, especially between May and September. If you have your heart set on a specific property with a terrace or a view of the basilica, secure your reservation as early as possible. Last-minute availability often comes with a significant price premium or forces you to compromise on location.
Verify Accessibility and Elevator Access
Many buildings in the Born district are converted medieval structures, meaning some lack elevators or have steep, narrow staircases. If you are traveling with heavy luggage, have mobility concerns, or are visiting with a stroller, you must confirm that the hotel has a lift. Never assume a "historic" hotel is accessible; always check the fine print regarding floor levels and step-free access.
Consider the Noise Factor
While the pedestrian streets create a peaceful atmosphere during the day, El Born comes alive at night with bustling tapas bars and late-night revelers. A room facing the main square or a popular alley can be noisy until the early hours. Request a room facing an interior courtyard or a higher floor if you are a light sleeper, and check reviews specifically for mentions of soundproofing and street noise.
Look for Seasonal Climate Control
Barcelona summers are hot and humid, while winters can be surprisingly damp and chilly. Because many historic hotels have thick stone walls, they can be difficult to heat or cool efficiently. Ensure your chosen accommodation offers modern, individually controlled air conditioning and heating units in the rooms, rather than relying on the building’s ancient structure to regulate temperature.
Leverage the Concierge for Local Dining
The area around the basilica is packed with restaurants, but not all are created equal; some cater heavily to tourists with inflated prices and mediocre food. A great hotel concierge or front desk team can be your greatest asset here, steering you toward authentic tapas bars and hidden bodegas frequented by locals. Don’t hesitate to ask for their personal recommendations before venturing out.
Choosing to stay near the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar places you in the beating heart of old Barcelona, where every stone tells a story of maritime trade and medieval craftsmanship. The convenience of stepping out your door and immediately finding yourself in a postcard-perfect plaza is a luxury that modern mega-hotels simply cannot replicate. With a little planning and the right accommodation, you can immerse yourself fully in the rhythm of the Born district.
Ultimately, the best hotel is one that enhances your connection to the destination. By selecting a property that respects the history of its surroundings while providing modern comfort, you ensure that your visit to Barcelona is not just a trip, but a true experience. We hope this guide helps you find the perfect home base for your adventures in this magical corner of Catalonia.
