Standing on the edge of Madrid’s Parque del Oeste, the ancient Egyptian Temple of Debod offers one of the most surreal sunsets in Europe. After watching the sun melt into the Casa de Campo skyline, the natural next step is to find a warm, quiet corner to process the view. The surrounding neighborhoods of Argüelles, Moncloa, and Malasaña are packed with specialty coffee bars that cater to locals, students, and curious travelers alike. Whether you need a quick espresso before exploring or a slow flat white after dusk, this guide points you to the best cups within walking distance.
The Madrid coffee scene has evolved dramatically over the last decade, moving far beyond the traditional torrefacto roasts of old. Today, you will find third-wave baristas pulling bright, fruity shots, alongside traditional cafes still serving creamy café con leche and fresh churros. The area near the Temple of Debod is uniquely positioned between the historic university district and the trendy Conde Duarte area. This means you get a mix of no-nonsense student fuel and meticulously sourced single-origin beans.
Because the temple sits inside a large public park, you will not find a coffee cart right at the monument itself. However, the nearest quality options are just a five to ten minute walk downhill toward Calle de Ferraz or Calle de la Princesa. These streets form the backbone of the Argüelles neighborhood, a residential zone that rewards those willing to wander slightly off the main tourist path. You will be walking alongside Madrileños going about their daily routines, which makes the coffee stop feel more authentic.
Choosing a coffee shop here depends on your mood. Are you looking for a place to rest your feet after the uphill walk from Plaza de España? Do you need a laptop-friendly table to plan the rest of your itinerary? Or are you simply chasing the best flat white in the city? Each location on this list has been selected for a specific strength, whether it is the quality of the roast, the atmosphere, or the proximity to the park entrance.
This guide focuses on cafes that are easily reachable on foot from the Temple of Debod. Madrid is a walkable city, but the area around the park has some steep inclines. For that reason, we have prioritized spots that require the least amount of uphill climbing after you leave the viewpoint. You will find that most of these are clustered near the Ventura Rodríguez and Argüelles metro stations, making them convenient for a quick exit back to the city center.
Beyond just caffeine, these shops offer a glimpse into the local culture. You will see neighbors reading the morning paper, university professors grading papers, and remote workers tapping away on laptops. The baristas are generally friendly and increasingly accustomed to English-speaking visitors. Do not be afraid to ask for a "café con leche de avena" or a simple "café solo" if you want to drink like a local.
Here is a curated selection of the best coffee shops to visit before or after your time at the Temple of Debod.

Wonderful peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Coffee selection is huge with a fantastic twist of Vietnamese style drinks. Staff are very pleasant and attentive. We ended up ordering so many coffees as we could not decide what to get!
Araya “Ooddy” Florence★★★★★
The coffee was a bit bland to me. Not quite aromatic as it should be. The flavour also quite bland but it’s better than some others I have tried in Madrid.
Ticiano González★★★★★
Very cozy environment and the perfect spot to come down from the busy streets of Madrid, especially on Sundays when most other cafés are closed or too crowded. The staff is very friendly and brings a very interesting touch to the menu and ambiance with their Vietnamese background. The baristas are experienced and do a great job every time to satisfy the customers needs, so feel free to be creative with your orders🙌🏼🥰.

One of the best coffee shops in the neighborhood. My coffee is always so creamy and tasty and not very acidic. Maria is my favorite barista! Always nice and warm. I highly recommend this coffee shop xoxo

Martin★★★☆☆
A coffee shop catering to tourists with dietary restrictions and a desire for familiar food. Despite its appealing appearance and seating, the service is slow, especially during non-peak hours. The pricing is tourist-oriented, and sugar must be fetched separately, it’s not brought to you. The cortado and orange juice (from blender)are good, but the food options are limited to European and American tastes, including a sandwich with German bread. The atmosphere is pleasant, but the lack of authentic Spanish cuisine and the high percentage of tourists make it an unsuitable place for me.

Superb, they make one of the best coffees in Spain. Their food is fresh, tasty and we'll made. The service is some of the nicest we have experienced in Spain.
It is always a pleasure to eat somewhere where customer service is simply about being nice and friendly and providing coffee and food that the staff is proud of.
They are Air-conditioned, the space may look small but they do have much more room downstairs and their service is fast and efficient.

Perfect gluten free brunch spot! The pancakes tasted homemade, rich, and comforting without being too sweet. Every bite with the fresh fruit and mascarpone cream was amazing. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the flavor and presentation🪄✨

Got the pancakes and toast with eggs. Good scrambled egg but the pancakes were just ok. Mascarpone didn’t add much but was a decent serving for the price. Service was lovely and attentive. Prices are super fair one of the cheaper breakfasts in Madrid. Would come back to try more of their menu!

Punto Kafe is delicious! Amazing energy and vibes for a breakfast spot. They offer an extensive, healthy menu full of fantastic options. We got the Iberian ham, eggs, toast and jam; we were blown away. The blueberry pancakes were so delightful as well. Lastly, the yummy coffees were exactly what we needed on an early morning. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant itself is quaint and clean. Highly recommend!

This tiny coffee shop is so lovely, super friendly barista who makes the most excellent coffee and chatted about the origin of the beans and ingredients of the cakes. I came 3 times in 3 days and had an excellent toast with egg and mortadella one day then tried the homemade apple, cinnamon cake. Very happy and zen place to be before a day of walking in Madrid!
Alexis S★★★☆☆
I wanted to love this place. It had beautiful decor. The service was brilliant. The cappuccino was well done. However, the food was not good. I had the brick of brie and mushrooms beet mix that had an unfortunate aftertaste when mixed with the pickled onion juice. The hummus was bland but okay. The dish was disappointing in first sight and in taste. I am sad to say that it was not good at all and it was not cheap.
Eric Cruz★★★★★
Nice Craft Coffee w great Desserts. The barista was nice and amicable. The cheesecake superb. The coffee is good. Even if I don’t lean on fruity blends, I liked it. Good Craft. Nice Atmos. Good People.

I loved it very much. Staff were sweet and the facilities (bathroom, tables) were spotless. The crystals gave such a lovely bright vibe to the place. Please check this place out!

Amazing café! Everything here is perfect, whether it’s the coffee or brunch. The staff are incredibly friendly too!! This is my favorite coffee shop in Madrid by far!

I already liked their coffee, and today I figured out that their food is also amazing. The pastrami sandwich is one of the best in Madrid, and I always try the pastrami sandwich every where when I find them.
They also have the drip coffee which I could only find in Brazil. It is a super easy way to have a filtered coffee wherever you go!
Zach Jones★★★★☆
Fantastic cortados and matchas. Very kind barista who helped us find the perfect drinks. Interior is clean and overall was a great experience!
Netanel Nesher★★★★☆
Cute place mostly for the calm and quiet vibe. The staff are nice and sweet.
The food was okay and could be better, the coffee is very fruity.
Overall a nice place for coffee and reading a book. Not many places to sit

Great coffee stop in Plaza de España! Perfect place for tourists to relax after walking around Madrid. The coffee was excellent, the pastries were fresh and delicious, and the staff was very friendly. Nice modern atmosphere and great location near the main attractions. Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.
Laurel Johnston★★★★★
Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!!
Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵
Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom.
The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐
Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out.
I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most!
The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

Very cute little coffee shop. It’s tiny which adds to the charm. A nice mix of locals and tourists. Cosy starting point for a stroll across this beautiful diverse neighborhood. The coffee is great and so are the tostados. The two guys that were working here were lovely too. And prices are very fair as well.

spent a rainy morning here, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. The ambience is warm and peaceful — perfect for reading, meeting a friend, or just relaxing. And the coffee is truly top-tier. A place I’d happily return to and highly recommend!

I didn’t really like the ice latte because it was too bitter for my taste. But the carrot cake was tasty!
The barista wasn’t friendly but in general I liked the vibe of this place. And the music was nice.
Damian Górecki★★★★★
It's an interesting place, I like the concept of an open kitchen. Unfortunately, the staff didn't speak English, so communication was minimal. But that's ok, coffee is a universal language 😉 Breakfast was simple but tasty. The batch brew coffee was good, but it's a shame they didn't offer pour over. Only hojicha was average. Well, I drank better, even at home. Overall, it's a cozy place, good when you're in the area.
Janine Negrin★★★★★
Great place to stop for quality coffee and a toast. We loved the mocha orange. The matcha was fabulous too. The bread for the tomato toast is high quality. Friendly staff and perfect vibe.

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people.
The avocado toast was simple and very tasty.
Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast.
They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside.
They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!
Adéla Krůčková★☆☆☆☆
They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious.
I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back.
It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down.
The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available.
So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.
Happy Dust★★★★★
A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

My kids said the matcha here was the best they had in Madrid! The homemade sweeteners really made it stand out. The food was absolutely delicious, and everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be coming back on our next visit.

Charming, cozy and peaceful. Felt like a tiny slice of Japan right in the center of Madrid. The perfect spot to slow down and enjoy a quiet moment.
Onigiri were really delicious and the most similar in flavor and texture to the one's I've had in Japan. Desserts and drinks were also really good! Will be coming back to try their Dorayaki.
Extra points for all the cute details sprinkled all around the shop. This really is a hidden gem in the city! ✨️
Leslie Teng★★★★★
Quiet and cute coffee and breakfast spot. The iced matcha latte had a good balance of milky-ness and bitterness, and the tamago sando was airy and tasty. The onigiri came out warm and savory.
The cafe itself has a leisurely feel to it, and service is friendly.
J Liu★★★★★
A cute little Japanese cafe in Madrid. The onigiri really reminded me of Japan. And the strawberry shortcake tasted like how it should at a cafe in Japan. Also delighted by their cortado as the the blended taste of espresso and oat milk really hit a high note. Would definitely like to visit again on this trip if time allows. Buen provecho!

First place I stopped when arriving in Madrid. Whatever espresso beans they are using are delicious (I may need to bring some back with me) and their carrot cake loaf was moist, the right ratio of nuts to cake and very light. Great little coffee shop!
Damian Górecki★★★★★
A very cozy place, you want to be there. During my 4 days in Madrid, I was here 3 times. One of the best basque cheesecakes I've ever eat. Perfectly creamy. Good batch brew speciality coffee, but it's a pity they don't have hand brew. Coffees with milk are also good, they know how to make them. It's also a good place for matcha fans. Friendly service.

As a coffee shop reviewer, it scares me to say that Oways Cafe has the best Iced Vanilla Latte in all of Madrid. If you go here I recommend you to get the Iced Vanilla Latte. The pastries at this place are also incredible. Coffee wise - 10/10
Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Temple of Debod
To make the most of your coffee crawl in this historic part of Madrid, it helps to understand a few local customs and logistical details. The area around the temple is largely residential, which means opening hours are tailored to the daily rhythms of locals rather than tourists. A little planning can save you from standing in front of a locked door or missing out on a signature drink.
First, remember that Spanish coffee culture is fast and social. It is perfectly normal to stand at the bar for a quick espresso, which is often cheaper than sitting at a table. If you want to sit and relax, look for a sign that says "terraza" or simply ask for "para mesa." Many cafes charge a small supplement for table service, especially outdoors, but the people-watching is usually worth it.
Second, embrace the local milk ratios. If you are used to a large latte, order a "café con leche" but know it will be smaller and stronger. For a larger, milkier drink, ask for a "café con leche en vaso grande" or look for specialty shops that serve flat whites and cappuccinos in international sizes. Third-wave shops will usually have oat, almond, and soy milk available, but traditional bars may only have whole or semi-skimmed milk.
Third, check the opening hours before you go. Many specialty coffee shops in Madrid do not open until 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning. If you are visiting the Temple of Debod early to beat the heat, you may find that only the traditional neighborhood bars are open for breakfast. These are excellent for a quick "tostada con tomate" and a strong coffee, but they may not have the specialty roasts you are seeking.
Fourth, consider the timing of your visit. The Temple of Debod is most crowded at sunset, which means the cafes immediately downhill will fill up quickly right after. If you want a relaxed seat, go for coffee before the sunset rush, then return to the park for the view. Alternatively, wait thirty minutes after sunset to let the initial wave of tourists clear out before you walk down to grab a table.
Fifth, carry some cash. While most specialty coffee shops and modern cafes in Madrid accept credit cards, smaller traditional bars may have a minimum spend or prefer cash for small purchases like a single espresso. Having a few euros in coins is always a good idea when you are hopping between the more old-school establishments near the university.
Finally, do not be afraid to ask for the house recommendation. Baristas in Madrid’s specialty scene are passionate and knowledgeable. If you cannot decide between a washed Ethiopian or a natural Colombian, tell them what flavors you like. They will often suggest a drink you would not have ordered yourself, turning a simple coffee break into a memorable part of your trip.
The area surrounding the Temple of Debod offers far more than just a pretty view. It is a living, breathing neighborhood where students, families, and artists converge over daily rituals of espresso and conversation. Taking the time to sit down in one of these cafes gives you a deeper understanding of Madrid than any crowded museum queue ever could.
As you plan your visit, remember that the best travel moments often happen in the quiet spaces between major attractions. A perfectly pulled shot of espresso, a flaky croissant, and a view of the park can be just as memorable as the ancient stones themselves. Use this guide as a starting point, but do not hesitate to wander into a place that looks busy with locals and smells of fresh coffee.
