12 Best Cafes Near Temple of Debod

Sitting atop a lush hill in Parque del Oeste, the ancient Egyptian Temple of Debod offers one of Madrid’s most surreal experiences. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the reflection of the 2,200-year-old stone structure in the still water creates a postcard-perfect moment that draws locals and travelers alike. While the temple itself is a gift from Egypt to Spain—saved from flooding during the construction of the Aswan Dam—the neighborhood surrounding it has quietly become a haven for specialty coffee lovers and brunch enthusiasts.

The area between Plaza de España, Argüelles, and the Manzanares River is often overshadowed by the bustling center of Malasaña or the artistic streets of La Latina. However, this western edge of the city possesses a distinct, laid-back charm that makes it ideal for a slow morning or a relaxed afternoon. With wide, tree-lined boulevards and the sprawling greenery of Parque del Oeste just steps away, it is the perfect district to pair a cultural visit with a high-quality caffeine fix.

Whether you are looking for a robust espresso to start your day before exploring the temple grounds or a cozy corner to unwind with a flat white after watching the sunset, this area has you covered. The local coffee scene here ranges from minimalist Scandinavian-inspired roasters to warm, vintage-style bakeries serving artisanal pastries. Because the temple is a major tourist draw, knowing which spots offer authentic quality versus generic tourist fare is essential.

To help you navigate the neighborhood like a local, we have curated a selection of establishments that prioritize excellent beans, welcoming atmospheres, and distinct personalities. These are not just places to grab a quick drink; they are destinations that enhance the overall experience of visiting one of Madrid’s most unique monuments. You will find options for remote work, casual catch-ups with friends, and even a quick bite to eat between sightseeing stops.

Most of these locations are within a comfortable walking distance of the temple, allowing you to seamlessly integrate them into your itinerary. Keep in mind that Madrid’s coffee culture often starts later in the morning and extends well into the evening, with many cafes doubling as spots for a late-afternoon vermouth or a sweet treat. It is a rhythm that invites you to slow down and savor the moment, much like the sunsets that grace the temple’s reflection pool.

Below, we have highlighted the best cafes near the Temple of Debod, selected for their quality of coffee, atmosphere, and proximity to the monument. From hidden gems serving single-origin brews to local favorites known for their decadent cakes, there is something here for every type of traveler.

We had a wonderful experience at Vienna Capellanes in Madrid. The food was delicious, the menu of the day offered great variety and excellent value, and everything was served quickly and efficiently. We especially want to thank Katherine, who took care of us with truly exceptional service. She was warm, attentive, professional, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Honestly, it was some of the best service we’ve experienced in a very long time. We enjoyed every moment - from the starters to the dessert - and Katherine made the experience even more special. Highly, highly recommended. We will definitely remember this place!

Cute cafe! I stopped for snacks while waiting to check into my accommodation. The food was good and the service was great. It was a nice place to hangout and work for a few hours.

I got a brunch menu set for 14€, with an egg on pancakes, sweet pastry, smoothie and tea. The food was well made, tasty, the portion size was good, I was full before finishing the dessert. The service was also very nice, the quality to price ratio in that set was a pleasant surprise, great experience.

Punto Kafe is delicious! Amazing energy and vibes for a breakfast spot. They offer an extensive, healthy menu full of fantastic options. We got the Iberian ham, eggs, toast and jam; we were blown away. The blueberry pancakes were so delightful as well. Lastly, the yummy coffees were exactly what we needed on an early morning. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant itself is quaint and clean. Highly recommend!

This tiny coffee shop is so lovely, super friendly barista who makes the most excellent coffee and chatted about the origin of the beans and ingredients of the cakes. I came 3 times in 3 days and had an excellent toast with egg and mortadella one day then tried the homemade apple, cinnamon cake. Very happy and zen place to be before a day of walking in Madrid!

I wanted to love this place. It had beautiful decor. The service was brilliant. The cappuccino was well done. However, the food was not good. I had the brick of brie and mushrooms beet mix that had an unfortunate aftertaste when mixed with the pickled onion juice. The hummus was bland but okay. The dish was disappointing in first sight and in taste. I am sad to say that it was not good at all and it was not cheap.

Nice Craft Coffee w great Desserts. The barista was nice and amicable. The cheesecake superb. The coffee is good. Even if I don’t lean on fruity blends, I liked it. Good Craft. Nice Atmos. Good People.

I loved it very much. Staff were sweet and the facilities (bathroom, tables) were spotless. The crystals gave such a lovely bright vibe to the place. Please check this place out!

Martin★★★☆☆
A coffee shop catering to tourists with dietary restrictions and a desire for familiar food. Despite its appealing appearance and seating, the service is slow, especially during non-peak hours. The pricing is tourist-oriented, and sugar must be fetched separately, it’s not brought to you. The cortado and orange juice (from blender)are good, but the food options are limited to European and American tastes, including a sandwich with German bread. The atmosphere is pleasant, but the lack of authentic Spanish cuisine and the high percentage of tourists make it an unsuitable place for me.
sam camp★★★★★
Superb, they make one of the best coffees in Spain. Their food is fresh, tasty and we'll made. The service is some of the nicest we have experienced in Spain. It is always a pleasure to eat somewhere where customer service is simply about being nice and friendly and providing coffee and food that the staff is proud of. They are Air-conditioned, the space may look small but they do have much more room downstairs and their service is fast and efficient.

Perfect gluten free brunch spot! The pancakes tasted homemade, rich, and comforting without being too sweet. Every bite with the fresh fruit and mascarpone cream was amazing. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the flavor and presentation🪄✨

Got the pancakes and toast with eggs. Good scrambled egg but the pancakes were just ok. Mascarpone didn’t add much but was a decent serving for the price. Service was lovely and attentive. Prices are super fair one of the cheaper breakfasts in Madrid. Would come back to try more of their menu!

Wonderful peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Coffee selection is huge with a fantastic twist of Vietnamese style drinks. Staff are very pleasant and attentive. We ended up ordering so many coffees as we could not decide what to get!
Araya “Ooddy” Florence★★★★★
The coffee was a bit bland to me. Not quite aromatic as it should be. The flavour also quite bland but it’s better than some others I have tried in Madrid.
Ticiano González★★★★★
Very cozy environment and the perfect spot to come down from the busy streets of Madrid, especially on Sundays when most other cafés are closed or too crowded. The staff is very friendly and brings a very interesting touch to the menu and ambiance with their Vietnamese background. The baristas are experienced and do a great job every time to satisfy the customers needs, so feel free to be creative with your orders🙌🏼🥰.

Very cute little coffee shop. It’s tiny which adds to the charm. A nice mix of locals and tourists. Cosy starting point for a stroll across this beautiful diverse neighborhood. The coffee is great and so are the tostados. The two guys that were working here were lovely too. And prices are very fair as well.
Olena Zhukova★★★★★
spent a rainy morning here, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. The ambience is warm and peaceful — perfect for reading, meeting a friend, or just relaxing. And the coffee is truly top-tier. A place I’d happily return to and highly recommend!
Anastasia Yevtushenko★★★★☆
I didn’t really like the ice latte because it was too bitter for my taste. But the carrot cake was tasty! The barista wasn’t friendly but in general I liked the vibe of this place. And the music was nice.
Damian Górecki★★★★★
It's an interesting place, I like the concept of an open kitchen. Unfortunately, the staff didn't speak English, so communication was minimal. But that's ok, coffee is a universal language 😉 Breakfast was simple but tasty. The batch brew coffee was good, but it's a shame they didn't offer pour over. Only hojicha was average. Well, I drank better, even at home. Overall, it's a cozy place, good when you're in the area.
Janine Negrin★★★★★
Great place to stop for quality coffee and a toast. We loved the mocha orange. The matcha was fabulous too. The bread for the tomato toast is high quality. Friendly staff and perfect vibe.

I was looking for Mexican bakery here around Prince pio in Madrid and I found this little gem! It’s easy accessible by bus and I had the most delicious Chilaquiles here with chicken, salsa verde and some café olla. The staff here is so lovely and friendly they even accommodated my request for more hot salsa El Yucateco, which is one of my top three sauces! Didn’t expect to find that in Madrid! The top floor has a really nice window of the street below so it’s great for people watching. The vibe here is really lovely. I will absolutely come again and try some of these more options they have for brunch.
Maddy Seals★★★★★
This cute little place is a hidden gem!! La lavanda matcha y los chilaquiles fueron increíbles!!! The people are so kind and welcoming too. Make sure to add it to your list if you are near the palace!

Really lovely friendly staff, delicious cake and refreshing iced coffee. Just what we needed on a hot day. 😀

Tobias Travels★★★★★
Absolutely incredible experience! I had the chilaquiles with both red and green sauce mixed, and the flavors were spot on—truly authentic. The café con leche was also excellent and paired perfectly with the meal. I highly, highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great Mexican breakfast!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at El Jardín Secreto. The food was outstanding - the tortilla was perfectly cooked, the jamón was rich and flavourful, and the prawn rolls were an unexpected highlight. Everything was fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of flavour. The atmosphere is charming and relaxed, and the beer was amazing- crisp, cold, and the perfect pairing for the meal. Staff were fantastic and friendly too. If you’re in Madrid and looking for great food in a cosy spot, El Jardín Secreto is a must visit. Highly recommended!

El Jardín Secreto is truly enchanting – it feels like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film brought to life. The atmosphere is magical, with soft lighting, countless carefully curated decorations, and cozy window alcoves with tables that make the place feel unique and intimate. It’s worth visiting for the location alone. The prices, in my opinion, are excellent, and the cocktails are well-crafted and enjoyable. Although I didn’t have the chance to try the food, the host was wonderfully kind and welcoming. If I ever return to Madrid, I would most certainly go back – it’s a place that stays with you
Abid★★★★★
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ El Jardín Secreto is such a hidden gem in Madrid! The desserts are absolutely delicious — rich, creative, and beautifully presented. The place itself has the quirkiest design I’ve ever seen: weird, random, and full of surprises at every corner. Somehow the chaos makes it super charming and memorable. Perfect spot if you want great sweets in a fun, out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Kalina Stoilova★★★★★
Very cute place; decoration is everywhere, so over the top that it somehow works and creates a great ambiance, cozy and dreamlike. The cocktails were very nice if you like them sweet, interesting and at a good price. Large choice of coffees and hot chocolate!
Bob Dyck★★★★★
El Jardine is a magical place to visit. The outside of the restaurant is lovely, however when we walked in, we were overwhelmed with the amazing atmosphere. The decor is truly outstanding. The attached pictures attest to that. We were warmly greeted and escorted to a lovely table. All the tables are lovely. We experienced the full bodied red wine. We had the artichoke dish. It was beautiful as you will see. It was delicious. The side accompaniment was so flavourful. The voices of the diners was so happy. We will return for our last night, we have been in Madrid for 2 months. Do miss visiting here.

First and foremost, I did not feel welcome. I was served once and then never returned or attended to for a second time. I waited for approximately half an hour, then while making eye contact and gestures at various servers in line with the behaviour of the other guests and was still not attended to. The atmosphere was beautiful. The location itself was lovely but I think if you’re not a local maybe avoid this place. Tourists are not as welcome.
Damiano Ciarrocchi★★★★★
Amazing experience! We were there for a pre-wedding party and the Cafe Del Rey team treated us extremely well! Christian was our favorite - always taking care of every request! 100% coming back here.
Marcus Hurley★★★★★
We crossed the road from the Principe Pio viewpoint to Cafe del Ray for dinner. This was a fabulous experience, we were there two hours which was about an hour longer than expected but the food was wonderful (chicken risotto with mushrooms for me), they had 1906 beer, the carrot cake was fantastic and it was a lovely atmosphere. The 2 guys working there were rushed off their feet but it was nice to be able to relax and have a pleasant meal while people watching. It was actually so nice that we returned the next night too, more wonderful food, great value and a lovely experience. The chocolate cake was a good sized portion and delicious!
Omri Curiel★★★☆☆

Amazing café! Everything here is perfect, whether it’s the coffee or brunch. The staff are incredibly friendly too!! This is my favorite coffee shop in Madrid by far!

I already liked their coffee, and today I figured out that their food is also amazing. The pastrami sandwich is one of the best in Madrid, and I always try the pastrami sandwich every where when I find them. They also have the drip coffee which I could only find in Brazil. It is a super easy way to have a filtered coffee wherever you go!

Origem Acai is a place people MUST visit in Madrid! I feel so lucky to have found it during my time studying abroad. The dark purple acai base is amazing, and is so flavorful and refreshing. The fruit used in the bowls was always fresh and delicious. The portion sizes are filling and suitable for its price. If I had enough money I would've come here everyday (which I nearly did the first week because it's just that good)! They don't just sell acai, they also sell savory foods as well. My friend got a dish with chicken and yuca which was delicious, cheesy, and well-seasoned. The staff made us feel so welcomed in Madrid. This was me and my friends' first time travelling to Europe, and Origem quickly became our homebase. Despite our limited Spanish-speaking skills, our interactions with the staff here helped us get adjusted to life in a foreign country. The owner was incredibly kind and generous, and would often spoil us with candy. Milu is also such a cute dog and helped whenever I missed my dog back at home!! Thank you so much Origem for providing us with the best dining experience in Europe! We will miss you!!
Rafael Lupo★★★★★
Great Acai! Very fresh, full of flavor, comfortable place, the owner is very polite and you get to meet Milu the shop’s cute dog. Worth visiting.
ChSala★★★★★
I’ve been here eating my breakfast for the last tree days. When I was booking a new hotel I even made sure it was not to far from this lovely place. Best Acai bowl I’ve had. And I have had many. The vibe is also amazing. Thank you❤️
Jacobo★★★★★
Wonderful little shop with such a cozy, welcoming feel. The açaí bowls are excellent, fresh, flavorful, and very satisfying, and the tapiocas are surprisingly filling. Everything is reasonably priced, especially for the quality. I do wish they served the açaí in larger bowls to allow more room to mix, because otherwise all the toppings end up being eaten first or you end up making a mess trying to mix. The staff is also incredibly friendly and inviting, which makes the experience even better. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a quick sweet treat, a light meal, or a simple snack done really well.
Paloma Pineda★★★★★
An outstanding experience! The service is exceptional, you're made to feel genuinely welcome from the moment you walk in. Without a doubt, they serve one of the best tapioca in Madrid, freshly made and absolutely delicious. The açaí bowl is just as impressive: fresh, generous, and full of flavor. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing, making it the perfect place to unwind. And the adorable host 🐶 adds an extra special touch that makes the whole experience even more memorable. I’ll definitely be coming back and highly recommend this place. Obrigada por tudo! Pela atenção, simpatia e excelente atendimento. Até a próxima! 🇧🇷

The ambiance is lovely, and it’s a great spot to enjoy a coffee and a croissant for just €4.50. The café is within walking distance of the Royal Palace Garden, and the daytime view is beautiful. They also have a pleasant outdoor seating area, which makes it a nice place to relax. Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the setting. The staff were not very welcoming, especially toward tourists, which took away from an otherwise enjoyable experience.
Zach Jones★★★★☆
The burrata. Thats all I’m gonna say. My goodness that was the most refreshing appetizer I’ve ever had. I highly recommend sitting at this restaurant during a sunny day. Truly was a splendid experience. My waiter was also super cool. My only drawback was the overly marinated/ over sauced chicken. Overall, loved my experience here!
Arjan Spannenburg★★★★★
What an amazing place and vibe for a breakfast. Friendly personnel, an amazing team who don't just cook but create small artworks. And the taste is absolutely perfect!
Nicole Thomas★☆☆☆☆
Really cool looking place. We got a table right away outside. Never even ended up actually ordering dinner. We ordered a sangria, a water, and a Coke. We got 2/3 of the drinks from the host guy who sat us, who was very friendly (only reason they got 2 stars for service and not 1). Then we sat there for well over an hour without seeing our waiter again. A few tables around us left without paying for even their drinks, but we stayed until he finally came back and at least paid for the drinks before leaving disappointed. I can't tell you how any of the dishes we'd planned on ordering were since we never tried them. The small bowl of potato chips we got with the drinks was fine.
S Chan★★★★☆
Nice venue with good atmosphere with outdoor tables as well! The food was ok and the service, a bit slow. You have to persist to get some attention from staff! 😅🫣

Tips for Enjoying Cafes Near Temple of Debod

To make the most of your coffee crawl in this beautiful part of Madrid, a little local insight goes a long way. The rhythm of the neighborhood shifts throughout the day, and knowing when and how to visit these spots can significantly improve your experience. Whether you are a digital nomad needing Wi-Fi or a traveler seeking the perfect photo, these practical suggestions will help you blend in seamlessly with the local crowd.

  1. Time your visit with the sunset. The Temple of Debod is most crowded—and most beautiful—at dusk. Head to a nearby cafe in the late afternoon for a coffee, then walk over to the park about 30 minutes before the sun sets to secure a good spot for photos.
  2. Bring cash for smaller spots. While most modern cafes in Madrid accept cards, a few traditional bakeries or smaller kiosks near the park may have a minimum spend or prefer cash. Carrying a €10 or €20 note is always a safe bet.
  3. Embrace the late breakfast culture. Locals rarely eat breakfast before 9:00 AM, and many specialty cafes don’t hit their stride until 10:00 AM. If you are an early riser, check opening hours in advance, as some artisan coffee shops may not open until mid-morning.
  4. Order like a local. While flat whites and cold brews are widely available, trying a café con leche or a café solo alongside a tostada con tomate (toast with crushed tomato) will give you a more authentic taste of Madrid’s café culture.
  5. Pair your coffee with a walk through Parque del Oeste. The park surrounding the temple is expansive and less touristy than Retiro. Grab your coffee to go, wander through the rose garden, and find a quiet bench to enjoy the views of the Royal Palace in the distance.

The area surrounding the Temple of Debod is a true reflection of Madrid’s evolving identity—where ancient history meets modern, high-quality gastronomy. Taking the time to explore the side streets and local haunts here will reward you with a much richer experience than simply rushing from monument to monument. The cafes in this district are more than just pit stops; they are community hubs where you can rest your feet, connect with the local pace of life, and fuel up for more exploration.

As you plan your visit, remember that the best travel memories often happen in the unplanned moments between the major sights. A perfectly pulled espresso, a flaky croissant, or a friendly chat with a barista can be just as memorable as the ancient stones themselves. So, after you have marveled at the hieroglyphics and the reflecting pool, let the local coffee scene welcome you to the modern side of Madrid.
