12 Best Restaurants Near National Museum of Archaeology

After an afternoon spent wandering among ancient Iberian sculptures, Phoenician artifacts, and the remarkable Lady of Elche, you will likely find yourself stepping out of the National Museum of Archaeology (MAN) with a profound appreciation for history and a sudden, urgent appetite. The museum sits in the elegant Salamanca district, just steps away from the Paseo de la Recoletos and the bustling Calle Serrano. This is one of Madrid’s most sophisticated neighborhoods, a place where luxury shopping and high-end dining have coexisted for decades.

The challenge is rarely finding food; rather, it is choosing the right experience to cap off your cultural visit. Because this area caters to a mix of international tourists, local business professionals, and discerning residents, the culinary landscape is incredibly diverse. From historic taverns serving cañas and croquetas to modern brasseries plating up contemporary Spanish cuisine, the streets surrounding the museum offer something for every palate and budget.

Understanding the geography of the area helps you plan your meal efficiently. The museum’s main entrance is on Calle Serrano, meaning many of the best dining options are a short walk west toward the Castellana or east toward the charming side streets of the Barrio de Salamanca. Whether you are looking for a quick, casual bite before continuing your sightseeing or a long, leisurely lunch with a bottle of Rioja, you are positioned perfectly.

Because this neighborhood is known for its quality, it pays to be a bit selective. You do not want to fall into a tourist trap when an authentic, family-run institution is hiding just around the corner. The best restaurants near the National Museum of Archaeology focus on quality raw materials, whether that means fresh seafood flown in from Galicia or premium cuts of Galician beef.

To help you navigate the options, we have curated a list that prioritizes authenticity and proximity. These are the spots where you can taste traditional Spanish flavors, enjoy excellent service, and refuel before heading back to the galleries or out for an afternoon of shopping. The list below is organized to give you a mix of historic taverns, upscale dining rooms, and relaxed cafes.

After the list of specific establishments, you will find a guide with practical tips for dining in this particular part of Madrid. These insights will help you navigate meal times, tipping etiquette, and local customs so you can dine like a local rather than a visitor.

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign. We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷
Kyaw Zaw Han★★★★★
We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!
Bob Excell★★★★★
This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

We absolutely loved La Malontina! It was, without a doubt, our favorite restaurant in Madrid and the best meal we had during our entire visit. Everything was exceptional. From the delicious, authentic food to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is cozy, beautiful, and full of charm, making you feel like you’re experiencing the real Madrid. The service was outstanding. Roberto took wonderful care of us, and all of the ladies on the service team were incredibly kind, friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to help. Their hospitality made our lunch even more memorable. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. We will definitely recommend La Malontina to anyone visiting Madrid, and we can’t wait to come back on our next trip! Muchas Gracias!
Tom Klopack★★★★★
Our best meal in Spain let alone Madrid. We’d eaten here for years ago and remembered it as we entered. Only 8 tables, can seat no more than 20 so you need a reservation. They brought amazing bread with roasted peppers to start. We had the Galician clams special in green sauce that was superb redolent with garlic and herbs. Then the whole monkfish baked simply with oil salt and herbs with potatoes. Dessert was a chocolate cookie, think brownie, with salted caramel gelato washed down with espresso. The white wine was their recommendation from Galicia and was fantastic. Could not recommend this place more. And listen to the mailers recommendations. We didn’t have it but the pasta with prawn looked amazing also.
KS Chak★★★★★
After being turned away yesterday because they were full, we made sure to have a reservation today - and it was worth it! La Malontina is a very intimate, small space, so booking is essential. The food was outstanding and beautifully presented. High-quality ingredients and a cozy atmosphere. Definitely one of our highlight of our trip!
Marie Yang★★★★☆
The kindest server ever - they saw that I didn’t enjoy the leek and took it off the check without me even asking for it. The rest of seafood I ordered are all super fresh and amazing - highly recommend the clams and scallops.
Albert Ka Shing LAI★★★★★
We stumbled upon this amazing local Spanish restaurant with a hint of Asian fusion. We ordered the octopus stew and seared scallops, which were absolutely delicious and flavourful. My husband had the leeks and monkfish, both fresh and tasty. The attentive service and fantastic recommendations for our dishes made the experience even better. For desserts, the carrot cake is a must try. Highly recommend trying it if you’re in Madrid, and it is good value for money as we did have 3 glasses of wine as well. Points to note, better book a table in advance as it is a cozy restaurant with around 20 seats only.

Antoni Jozefkowicz★★★★★
This place is amazing. We ordered a normal burger and salmon with mashed potatoes. The burger was perfect, the pickles were fresh and firm all the sauces were great. The salmon was light and full of flavor, the mashed potatoes were very fluffy and paired very nicely with the salmon. The lime pie was superb. The service was very fast and attentive, and the atmosphere was extremely good. Definitely recommend.
Robert Garcia Ventura★★★★★
Super great experience! Price quality the best you can find in Madrid. I got the daily Menu for 15€ that includes first and second dish, drink, dessert or coffee and bread. Food was very tasty, specially the meat. Rations where pretty good for a menu of this price. Definitely will recommend it and come back again! Great service from the stuff, Raul and the rest of the team.
Berta Rojas★★★★★
Best lunch in Madrid since I arrived. Great service, excellent food, quality is all over the place. Highly recommended! Raul took care of me with Maria and they both were kind and attentive. Thanks for the experience!
Susan Tesch★★★★★
The food was so good we came back a few days later. Both the Cury Chicken and Rice and the Pad Thai were excellent. Loved the Turkish ice tea!
Sofia M★★★★★
Excellent experience. The food is good and the menu is very modern, perfect for trying new things. The place is cozy, perfect for going on a date or with friends. Price is ok, matches the quality and service. Food came quickly and the drinks were good. A safe option to try something different when traveling Madrid.

Decor and ambiance A+ Food is beyond believe. We ordered the chicken wings, calamari, padron peppers, Jamon iberico, ham croquettes and the Fabada. The food was way superior to any other food we have visited in Europe in our current 21 days European trip. We arrived and we were able to get a table within seconds. The wood seats was a little hard, but it went well with this restaurant vibe and you will forget about it as soon as you start eating your food. We have no clue how big each item was, but we were able to take it home for a round 2 tomorrow. I have not seen the amount of food each dish has in any of the restaurants we have visited in Europe. Be very hungry! Everything was really good, however, Fabada deserves, not 5 stars, but really a whole galaxy of stars. I was speechless and in another dimension. Really! Ask for Juli. She was attentive, friendly, smiley and knowledgeable of all dishes we ordered. Also, Juli made me feel like I was home talking to a relative as I enjoyed my meals. Outstanding work, Juli. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the great memories we created at La Fragua de Vulcano. I will be back!
Steve★★★★★
Their tripe dish is cooked to perfection and their portions are quite large! I really liked the vibe as it's very casual.
valentina theodorou★★★★★
The food was absolutely delicious and I really enjoyed it! It’s a small and cozy place, but the waitress was very friendly and the service was quick and efficient. Definitely worth a visit.
L Lee★★★★★
Nestled in the walking distance of tourist attractions such as Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real de Madrid, Teatro Real and many other beautiful streets and buildings. Wonderful atmosphere (during world cup period) as there was Mundial on the big screen. I enjoyed the Jamón Iberico and the Grilled Prawns. Very nice hospitaly from the staff especially for a restaurant in the city centre 👍🏻
Shannon Duffy★★★★★
Nice, casual tapas place with a neighborhood atmosphere. They have a lot of the standard tapas but the servings seem generous and perfect for groups. We had the Cocido Madrileño and it was lovely. The space is lively and fun.

The food was absolutely delicious, especially the sea bass ,onion soup, huevos rotos with Iberian ham and truffle risotto. Sebastian was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
When we arrived they didn't serve coffee because their coffee machine was broken. But we stayed to drink a lemonade. It's very nice inside, they have many tables. Avara has a few tables for 2 people near the place.
Dražen Grbić★★★★★
We had: Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato) Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍 Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate. For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.
Lets Go★★★★★
Walk in customers on a cold afternoon after visit to Prado museum. Was happy that food was being served from 1230pm onwards. Enjoyed the hearty chicken soup and the flavourful pumpkin soup.
Mauro Deffendini★★★★☆
Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite. The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special. The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special. What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

My wife and I stopped by for drinks and tapas with no reservation. Very charming place and even though they were busy, they were happy to fit us in with no reservation. Claudia brought us a delicious limoncello at the end. I wish I were ready for dinner because the bruschetta was delicious and I saw the salmon go by that looked cooked to perfection. We’ll definitely be back if we get the chance in the next two days.
Preethi Balagani★★★★★
Some of the best Italian food we have ever had. We are vegetarian and got the gnocchi al pesto and margarita pizza, both of which were delicious but the gnocchi was honestly some of the best we’ve had. Highly recommend this restaurant! Would recommend reserving beforehand. The service is great and the ambiance is nice!
Anamaria Gonzalez★★★★☆
Loooved this authentic Italian restaurant. The pistachio pizza was a great way to start! The caprese salad was alright but not my favorite as it didn’t taste as it did back in Italy 🤭 maybe because tomatoes are not in season? But ANYWAYS, the truffle risotto and carbonara were both flavorful and filling but not too much! We still had room for the amazing cannolis and tiramisu 😍 I definitely recommend this place for any time of girl’s night out, date night or special occasion. Friendly and professional staff! The sitting was a bit tight but we made it work. Grazie mille!!
Xristina D★★★★★
We visited this trattoria on February 13th a company of 6 from Greece. We loved the tasty dishes, the cosy atmosphere and the excellent service, especially from Claudia! 2 weeks later and I still dream on those dishes! Congratulations to all, keep up the good work! The best food I tasted in Madrid was not spanish, it was italian. 😁 Vitello tonato, eggplants with roca and tomatoes, rigattoni diavola, aunt Lidia's fresh lasagna (pure magic), pizza diavola, risotto porcini, canolli, tiramisu, pana cotta. Highly recommended!!!
Stephen★★★★★
The food and service are excellent in this traditional Italian restaurant. The pizza is definitely one of the best in Madrid! It’s very well cooked and the dough used is top notched. Very tasty and authentic. For those who are lactose intolerant, for example my friend who is dining with me, you can always try their Marinara pizza that does not come with cheese but a healthy dose of tomato paste. The pasta dishes are equally good as well. For those who want to reduce carbs intake you can try the chicken and beef as they are good as well. Claudia from the staff, is very friendly and helpful! She has made our dining experience a delight. It is always a pleasure to be served by her as she is very service oriented. I look forward to going back again soon!

We visited this restaurant three times during our week in Madrid that’s how much we loved it! Great food, fun music, and excellent service. Steve took especially good care of us. Don’t miss the jamon croquetas, garlic shrimp, or the secreto de tenera - all fantastic. Reasonable prices and great sangria too. We always left happy! Highly recommend!
katsie tang★★★★★
As a solo traveller I was very worried that I could not have paella because most places require 2 ppl minimum. This lovely tavern solved my problem with friendly service and an amazing seafood paella for one person. The shrimp on the paella was a little bit too soft for my taste, but the shrimp in olive oil & garlic more than made up for it. Would recommend!
kaka k★★★★☆
Cozy restaurant and the food was tasty with reasonable price. I had Jamon Iberico and garlic shrimp and both were good but not really surprising while the Caesar salad was impressive. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would recommend to try if you stay in Madrid.
Polina Kochina★★★★★
Food is good, wine is good also. Paella is so tasty even has not so much seafood. We were a little bit sad that in the end of our lunch the waiter didn’t give us their welcome gift (because he gave it to all other guests) but we decided that it was because half of our company didn’t order any alcohol 😅
刘宇灿★★★★★
I brought my friend to Madrid for a trip. This was our first day here, and we casually searched for this restaurant on Google. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. All the staff are especially friendly, especially a gentleman from Venezuela 🇻🇪, who has been attentive to our dining experience and helped us. He is very friendly. We hope everyone will come to this small tavern and have a pleasant experience

Very good and very fine dishes, not too spicy or salty, salad was fresh, everything was perfect. The Saba fish taste good, wish it was fresher or less over cooked. The best dinner we had in Madrid for our 3 days stay, not expensive, very reasonable. The ham is a must to try. The service was very good and friendly, our waiter was Lasset from Cuba, smiley and friendly.

Beautiful atmosphere and delicious food! Service was wonderful as well.

Excellent service. The house rioja is nice. Stunning cheesecake - on the salty side but can be neutralised and enriched with chocolate sauce. Arroz is rich and melty with ox tail flavour. They were considerate to have given me two appetizers knowing that the arroz was going to take long.

We ordered a full plate of pawns with garlic, but there was only 8 small pieces of pawns for €13.5, totally looks like a medium size dish. Double checked with the waitor, he said it is a full plate. Such a scam for tourists. The pawns tasted like frozen for a long time and the tail is even black, definitely not fresh at all. Paella was pre-made which was served 5 minutes after we ordered. Service was poorrrrr. Waitor was banging the spoons all the way to our table. Horrible experience. Worst meal in Spain.
Arien Yang★★★★☆
The risotto was rich and delicious, the seafood was very fresh, the location was close to the train station and Sofia Art Center. Highly recommended 👍
Ryan Cedergren★★★★☆
Tasty spot, make sure to stick to the Spanish dishes here. Paella was pretty good and came out hot. Staff was friendly and quick.
Jerry★★☆☆☆
The location of this restaurant is excellent, right near the Reina Sofia Museo making it a convenient stop to rest and grab a meal after a visit. Unfortunately, the food quality was very disappointing. You can imagine the quality of a seafood paella that is served just five minutes after ordering — the seafood was clearly not fresh. The mussels were small, with the meat separated from the shells. The large portion of calamari made us wonder if we were mistakenly served the small portion instead, there were only 6 small pieces in total. I honestly wonder whether the owner or the chef has changed. We came here based on positive reviews from others, but it turned out to be a very poor experience.
Eugenio Rivera★★★★☆
Great food...impressed by the fried eggplant, moussaka and spinach ravioli (highly recommended). Quick service. Still, they have to work the seafood paella and get a better quality steak. Seats are Japanese style short but definitely eat again there. Great beer. Good house wine.

We had Catalina as our server and our experience was amazing! She was so knowledgeable about the menu and just a good server overall. The food was also amazing, we got 2 different croquettes, the bao buns, and the steak and it was all delicious. Highly recommend this spot!

The location is really nice and the servers are friendly. The fish was not good. The burger and pork cheeks were good though. The bacalao with beets was really bad. The fish had no seasoning at all, not even salt. The beet puree was a strange pudding texture. The fact that two of us didn’t finish our food should have told them it wasn’t good. Also, we ordered the tartar (mango and avocados) but instead we received the Russian salad. It was good though.
Scott Colson★★★★★
We stopped here for tapas after our tour of the Palace, based on the reviews. Excellent food, good service, and we were seated looking out the window, so we could watch people going by. I highly recommend this location. Food is great! Menu is available via QR code and in five different languages. Staff easily spoke Spanish and English with us
Cοnstantinos Chronakis★★★★★
Delicious food! I ordered the artichokes with jamon and the pork cheek stew. Both of them were exceptional. The stew had a very hearty and homemade feeling. The portions were quite large, so they can definitely be shared between 2. For those 2+ a bottle of water and bread I paid 43€ (no tip included), but as I said the portions are large enough to share. I visited solo, so it was easy to find a table, but I wouldn't suggest going at peak hours without a reservation if you have a group of 2+. The staff speaks English and the dark haired waitress with the glasses was very polite and welcoming.
Keila Sierra★★★★★
Gloria Bendita was the first restaurant we chose as we touched down in Madrid. We were looking for a place that we could sit outside, enjoy a nice warm welcoming atmosphere, and have some phenomenal traditional Spanish food. They exceeded our expectations with all of the above. What made it even more special was our waitress, Rocio. She was welcoming, very friendly and accommodating. If you’re looking for a place that has great steak, seafood, and sangria, this is your place.

A very cozy place with a warm and pleasant atmosphere. We were welcomed with a smile and served quickly. It was also lovely that they had candles available, and the pastry chef beautifully decorated the dessert at my request. We even all sang “Happy Birthday” together for my husband, which made the moment truly special. A wonderful place - I highly recommend it. The presentation of the dishes might differ slightly from the photos on Instagram, but they are still absolutely delicious.

While searching for a place to have authentic paella near our hotel, we stumbled upon Taberna Restaurante El Típico Madrid, and it was easily the best culinary find of our trip. The food here is outstanding—truly a level above other options in the area. We started with the house sangria, which was excellent and perfectly balanced. For the meal, the seafood paella was the star, but everything we ordered was top-tier: the garlic shrimp was sizzling and flavorful, the grilled octopus was tender, and the fried eggplant with honey was a delicious surprise. We even tried the pork ribs, which were fall-off-the-bone tender. What really made the evening special was the staff. Both the waiter and waitress were incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel like locals. We truly hit the jackpot with this one. If you are in Madrid, do not miss this gem!

In total: very nice place and very good service. We had steak. They should ask how the costumers want their steak. A vegetable dish, which needed to be cooked 3/4 minutes longer. However it was delicious. We didn’t have much time so we ate it. And crispy pork ribs, Torreznos. Really Fantastic. We loved it. Mojito: less ice please

We loved the experience here! Everything was delicious and the atmosphere in general was great. I loved the Roquefort Tenderloin which came with fries – the sauce on the meat was so good mmmmm… the portions are not big, so if you’re very hungry you’re probably need starters or another main dish. Definitely recommend.

Absolutely the best experience. Very close to the city center, but on a side street where it’s quiet and cozy. The food - paella and the meats were top of the top. Everything was prepared perfectly. And the white wine was delicious. This is exactly what I look for in restaurants when I’m on vacation. The service is the best. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Thank you so much again for your help during our “little” heart incident, especially to Gustavo, he did everything he could to help. You are all the best and I will definitely be back someday.

Tips for Dining Near the Museum

Dining in the Salamanca district follows a distinct rhythm that is important to understand if you want to maximize your experience. Spanish meal times are famously later than in many other countries, and this neighborhood adheres strictly to tradition, especially during the work week. Whether you are grabbing a quick tapa or sitting down for a multi-course meal, knowing the local customs will save you from confusion and ensure you get a table.

First, align your schedule with Spanish lunch hours. Lunch (la comida) is the main meal of the day and is generally served between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. If you try to eat lunch at noon or 1:00 PM, you will often find kitchens closed or only offering a limited breakfast menu. If you finish at the museum early, consider having a coffee or a pastry first and waiting until at least 1:30 PM for the dining rooms to open.

Second, always check if the restaurant offers a "Menú del Día." Many of the sit-down restaurants in the Salamanca district cater to local office workers and museum staff during the week. These fixed-price menus usually include a starter, a main course, dessert, bread, and a drink. It is almost always the best value for money and gives you a chance to taste home-style Spanish cooking without overspending.

Third, remember that dinner is late and lighter than you might expect. Most kitchens do not open for dinner until 8:30 PM, with the peak reservation time falling between 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM. If you are visiting the museum in the late afternoon and want to eat early, you will likely be limited to cafes or bars serving tapas and raciones rather than full restaurant service.

Fourth, embrace the bar experience. You do not always need a table to eat well. Many of the best traditional spots near Calle Serrano have a lively bar area where you can stand, order a caña (small draft beer) or a vermouth, and eat a few pinchos. This is often faster, cheaper, and more atmospheric than sitting in the dining room.

Fifth, tipping is modest. Service is usually included in the price, and locals typically leave just the loose change or a 5% tip for exceptional service. There is no need to leave 15-20% as you might in other countries. Simply rounding up the bill to the nearest euro or leaving a few coins is considered polite and respectful.

Exploring the area around the National Museum of Archaeology is a feast for both the eyes and the stomach. The neighborhood’s mix of grand architecture and intimate culinary traditions makes it one of the most pleasant areas of Madrid to spend an afternoon. By choosing a restaurant from the curated list and following the local dining customs, you ensure that your cultural excursion ends on a deliciously authentic note.
