Sitting down to a memorable meal is an essential part of experiencing Madrid, especially after wandering through the opulent halls and manicured gardens of the Royal Palace. The streets surrounding the Palacio Real are a fascinating mix of historic taverns, modern bistros, and traditional Spanish eateries that cater to every kind of traveler. Whether you are looking for a quick bite between sightseeing stops or a leisurely multi-course lunch, this area offers a deep well of culinary variety.
However, finding genuine quality in a neighborhood so heavily trafficked by tourists can be a challenge. It is easy to stumble into an overpriced trap with a laminated menu and lackluster paella if you do not know where to look. That is why knowing the local favorites, the hidden tapas bars, and the historic institutions is the key to eating well here.
The best dining experiences near the palace are often found just a few streets away from the main plaza, tucked into the winding lanes of the Austrias district. These restaurants blend the rich history of Madrid with contemporary culinary techniques, offering everything from slow-cooked stews to innovative seafood. The proximity to the Sabatini Gardens and the Almudena Cathedral makes these spots incredibly convenient for a midday break.
This guide focuses on establishments that offer not just great food, but also a genuine sense of place. You will find places where the waiters have worked for decades, where the recipes have been passed down through generations, and where the atmosphere transports you to old Madrid. We have prioritized locations that are easily walkable from the palace gates, ensuring you do not have to sacrifice quality for convenience.
From the bustling bars along Cuesta de la Vega to the quieter terraces overlooking the Campo del Moro, there is a table for every occasion. You might be seeking a robust cocido madrileño to fuel an afternoon of exploration or a delicate plate of Iberian ham paired with a crisp glass of local wine. The variety is staggering, yet the standard of excellence remains consistently high in the right establishments.
We have curated a list of twelve standout restaurants that capture the essence of dining in this historic quarter. Each recommendation has been selected for its commitment to quality ingredients, authentic atmosphere, and reliable service, ensuring that your meal becomes a highlight of your visit. You can trust these picks to deliver a true taste of Madrid without the tourist fatigue.
Explore these standout options to find the perfect spot for your post-palace appetite.

Our first place we visited after arriving. Chat recommended due to its history. Wait staff not the friendliest but we managed. If looking for a quick drink it could be worth it but then again,,, there’s 1000 others you could try.

Great outdoor seating and wonderful service from the staff!
The calamari tasted just right, not to mention croquettes and jambon iberico.. to die for!

Stopped for breakfast early in the morning after landing in Madrid and had the revuelto de espárragos con morcilla and coffee. Very good food and outstanding service.

Beautiful traditional eateries located near the Royal Palace. Very traditional tapas menu with fantastic freshly cooked food. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. Very traditional place you could easily just come for drinks or tapas but I would highly recommend both, we loved it. The wine choices are excellent try the house wine first you probably will be very happy.
(One thing to note, the food is so nice but if you are used to UK tapas portions, you will find the portion sizes here about twice the size of at home so be careful not to over order. That said, they are so kind, the staff will package up food if you want to take away).

The food was excellent. We had the cannelloni with beef, pumpkin purée, and béchamel sauce, as well as the special with jamón, baby potatoes, and cheese. For an appetizer, we ordered fried calamari with aioli and lemon. Everything was fresh, tender, and very flavorful. We shared the dishes between three people and left completely full.
We were also served bread with butter, almonds, and hummus. The accompaniments were nice, but the bread was very cold—almost like airplane bread. Warming it up would make a noticeable difference.
The restaurant also offered us truffles for dessert, which were delicious and a very thoughtful touch that elevated the overall experience.
Prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portions are generous. The service was professional, and the location is excellent, with a view of the palace.
The only downside was that the staff did not speak English at all, although this seems to be something you may encounter in many places across Madrid.

Every time I come to Madrid, it’s impossible not to visit Café de Oriente. It has become one of my absolute favorite places. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is elegant, and the location is simply stunning.
A special thank you to Daniel for his exceptional service. He is professional, attentive, warm, and always makes every visit feel special. His hospitality is one of the reasons I keep coming back.
I highly recommend Café de Oriente to anyone visiting Madrid. I can’t wait for my next visit!

Had a great experience at Café de Oriente for a special birthday dinner in a gorgeous private room. The waiters assigned to us specifically were amazing and so was the food, which was both of great quality and variety, and adapted to everyone's needs!

Excellent location, but the waiters have a pitiful attitude. No customer service or pleasantries ( note the waiter in the picture specifically but not just him ! ) are involved with taking your overpriced order.
Definitely won't return !
Grete Larsen Meyer★★★☆☆
Great location and excellent service, but the food needs improvement.
This is a lovely spot for lunch, offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace. The menu and wine list are both very good.
We ordered two different paellas, one black and one white. The rice was flavorful and cooked perfectly, with an excellent texture. However, both dishes were notably lacking in seafood. A great paella should be overflowing with fish and shellfish, but here the dishes consisted of about 80% rice.
A venue with such a prime location, attentive service, and elegant surroundings deserves a stronger kitchen.

Taberna del Alabardero is a delightful authentic Spanish restaurant. The décor is quirky and relaxed and very interesting with all the walls adorned with photos, trinkets and memorabilia from the past. The staff are friendly, well dressed, very welcoming and old school silver service professional. The food is varied, traditional and absolutely delicious. The restaurant is located in walking distance to many of the major attractions of Madrid. I would highly recommend enjoying a relaxed lunch or dinner at Taberna del Alabardero.

4 of us had a lovely dining experience here on Friday evening. The restaurant is very nice, located next to the opera house. The food was amazing, the decor of the restaurant was very nice and the staff extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. Our waiter for the evening was happy to advise us on our menu choices and we very much enjoyed our time in the restaurant thanks to his service. Unfortunately we didn’t get his name but I do know that he spent some time working in Banbury in the UK. Thank you for making our dining experience so enjoyable!

The food, the service and everything was absolute PERFECTION. We had a group of 12 on Sunday evening (08/06) that we booked ahead of time. The staff was very attentive, friendly and the food was out of this world. The restaurant is very traditional and has a lovely charm to it. I personally felt guilty of not being able to finish my main dish it was that good. If I could give them 10 stars I would! Thank you to everyone who made our evening a very memorable and amazing!

We went there for dinner and we were totally disappointed. The food was horrible, the suckling pork was definitely reheated multiple times as it tasted so bad that we had to stop eating before feeling fully sick. I'm unsure how they have +4 stars..

A trully exceptional experience here at La MI Venta!
The food is amazing, we were 2 for dinner without booking, and after just a few minutes we could seat near the kitchen. It was a great show of skills and passion for the food.
Hand cut Jamón, meat cooked on the charcoal, great dishes coming one after the other.
We had a selection of a few and everything was amazing. The Entrecote was a bit rare but excellent quality and the waiter sent it back for an extra flame without questioning.
All this a few 100m from the Palacio!

It was a slightly chilly evening when we walked into this little restaurant for dinner. Since it was full when we arrived, we had to wait a bit, but the staff kindly brought us some ham soup to enjoy while waiting. The open-style “kitchen” looked so inviting that we couldn’t resist ordering the grilled T-bone steak and the house specialty, Secreto. For starters, we tried the grilled goat cheese salad over fresh apple jam, along with a platter named after the restaurant itself—Tapas La Mi Venta—which included sautéed bread crumbs, callos, vegetable stew, fried calamari rings, and chorizo.
The salad was a delightful surprise, highlighting the rich flavor of the goat cheese while the apple added a refreshing touch. Among the tapas, our favorite was the callos. Then came the main courses! The T-bone steak was grilled to perfection—juicy and flavorful—and paired wonderfully with the Padron peppers. The signature grilled pork tenderloin was also delicious.
The service was attentive throughout; the staff changed our plates promptly and frequently checked on how we were enjoying the meal. As a sweet final touch, they offered a small glass of Baileys to end the evening. It was a heartwarming dining experience.

We had dinner here and were truly impressed. The Bellota ham was absolutely fantastic – one of the best we have ever tasted. The Iberico pork and the fish were both delicious and perfectly prepared. We also enjoyed an excellent Ribera del Duero red wine that paired wonderfully with the meal.
We would especially like to thank our waitress, Alejandra, for her kindness, attentiveness, professionalism, and warm hospitality. She made our evening even more enjoyable.
We highly recommend La Mi Venta to anyone visiting Madrid and will definitely come back!

Able to be seated with no wait and no reservation, even though it was busy. Louis was an excellent waiter, and made impeccable suggestions for me. Food was delicious and the courses came out times perfectly (at least for me). Happy to highly recommend due to taste and warm, detailed service.

We had Catalina as our server and our experience was amazing! She was so knowledgeable about the menu and just a good server overall. The food was also amazing, we got 2 different croquettes, the bao buns, and the steak and it was all delicious. Highly recommend this spot!

The location is really nice and the servers are friendly. The fish was not good. The burger and pork cheeks were good though. The bacalao with beets was really bad. The fish had no seasoning at all, not even salt. The beet puree was a strange pudding texture. The fact that two of us didn’t finish our food should have told them it wasn’t good. Also, we ordered the tartar (mango and avocados) but instead we received the Russian salad. It was good though.

We stopped here for tapas after our tour of the Palace, based on the reviews. Excellent food, good service, and we were seated looking out the window, so we could watch people going by. I highly recommend this location. Food is great!
Menu is available via QR code and in five different languages. Staff easily spoke Spanish and English with us
Cοnstantinos Chronakis★★★★★
Delicious food! I ordered the artichokes with jamon and the pork cheek stew. Both of them were exceptional. The stew had a very hearty and homemade feeling.
The portions were quite large, so they can definitely be shared between 2. For those 2+ a bottle of water and bread I paid 43€ (no tip included), but as I said the portions are large enough to share.
I visited solo, so it was easy to find a table, but I wouldn't suggest going at peak hours without a reservation if you have a group of 2+.
The staff speaks English and the dark haired waitress with the glasses was very polite and welcoming.

Gloria Bendita was the first restaurant we chose as we touched down in Madrid. We were looking for a place that we could sit outside, enjoy a nice warm welcoming atmosphere, and have some phenomenal traditional Spanish food. They exceeded our expectations with all of the above. What made it even more special was our waitress, Rocio. She was welcoming, very friendly and accommodating. If you’re looking for a place that has great steak, seafood, and sangria, this is your place.

Let’s start with the attention grabber, the view. This restaurant has an incredible view especially when we went due to the fact that it was sunset. The service was spectacular, from explaining to us what type of wine we should order, to how attentive and aware our waiter was throughout the meal. Let me just say. I was not expecting the beef wellington to be the best one I have ever tried. As someone who reviews countless restaurants it is impressive for me to say that Papagenas beef wellington is even better than the ones in Gordon Ramseys restaurants, or anywhere else I have ever had a beef wellington. It is an absolute must have if you come here.

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.

Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours.
I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person.
The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time.
My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome!
What to got:
- ham croquettes
- shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness)
- crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

A casual, lovely place to enjoy dinner. I went specifically for their oxtail stew which I had read rave review of — they were right. The stew was amazing, as was the tinto de varano. ⭐⭐⭐ Mixed Experience: Great Service, Disappointing Mains
The **service was attentive** and the venue is very attractive. They served a complimentary **chorizo while we waited, which was delicious!**
Unfortunately, the main dishes fell short. The **skirt steak was too chewy** and definitely wasn't the best, and the **ribs were not so tasty**. Great service and snacks.
meng jia (Olive)★★★☆☆
I watched the other people recommend and give this a try, but feel the food is not good enough, the beaf quality is not ok, don’t match the price. the shrimp is ok and fresh. The average price is 20-30, not 10-20.
Emalee Johnson★★★☆☆
I really wanted to like this place, but the experience felt more style-over-substance than expected. The service was slow and not very responsive throughout the meal, and unfortunately the food fell short as well.
The sangria was disappointing, the pork lacked flavor, and the goat cheese croquettes were more dense than crispy. The octopus was overcooked and not very flavorful, and the ratatouille was the only acceptable dish.
Overall, it just didn’t feel worth the price for the quality of the food and experience.

The Spanish meat platter was uniquely delicious and the wine was perfect. The setting is authentically retro and beautiful. Very good staff.

I’m starting to think all the food in Madrid is out of this world, but Scarlett really stands out. This breakfast and brunch spot is awesome! They have an amazing selection of specialty coffee and a huge variety of brunch options to choose from. Even though the place was completely full, the service was impressively fast. We stumbled upon this place while walking by and decided to give it a try. We were delighted with our decision. It’s fantastic that they serve breakfast all day. Exactly what you want from a rustic and well-recommended tapas tavern in Madrid. Class A service, an incredible selection of plates, and personal service by a culinary guide. Our server was wonderful, giving suggestions throughout the meal. The setting is fantastic, just blocks away from iconic Spanish monuments and the Royal Palace, with a view of an idyllic sunken garden through the window. Bravo!

This lovely restaurant is right in between old town Madrid and the Palacio Real looking out on a beautiful green park next to the bridge. We enjoyed the sound track which was a mix of English language 70s and 80s music with Spanish tunes. The menu was inexpensive and delicious. My husband and I shared the mozzarella and tomato salad and scrambled eggs with mushrooms and asparagus. My main was bonito with a tomato sauce and lovely mashed potatoes with spinach. The menu comes with a drink and dessert. I went less caloric with a tasty piece of melon.

It was a cold December night, we did not want to walk far. This place was a minute walk away from our rent house so it’s perfect
Food was great! We ordered 5-6 tapas for the 3 of us. Every single dish tasted delicious. My favorite was the Patatas Bravas, what can I say… I have fried potatoes are my weakness. Our meal ends with tiramisu and cheesecake.
The whole dinner was a very pleasant experience.

We stopped here after visiting a nearby park. We are really glad we did. The food was amazing. Definitely one of our favorite places from our trip. Great value for the money, highly recommend this spot which is off the beaten path.

Our group of 6 went with high expectations.
The restaurant is beautiful to be sure. The waitress and sommelier were polite.
We frequent fine dining restaurants during all our vacations.
The food was what was so disappointing. The one item that was as good as expected was the beef Wellington. The mushrooms, the salads, the cod, the tartar, the beef, the pasta were all bland. The plating was also ho hum.
At this price point, we expect so much more.
The MOST disappointing was the duck. It was so tough, it was hard to even eat. On top of that, their “steak knife” was duller than a butter knife.
When the waitress asked if everything was good, we did mention that the duck was so tough, it was inedible. But no follow through.
Later, during our dinner, a gentleman, I assume is the manager, came and asked how everything was. We again explained that the duck was so tough. It was inedible.
He said “yes, it is delicious! “ ?!?! I am not sure if his English was very poor or he was just not caring to get feedback. Once again, no follow-through. Even the mille feuille dessert which should be flaky and crisp, was mushy and gross.
If you are looking for a beautiful restaurant but don’t care about the food, and willing to pay fine dining prices, maybe this restaurant is acceptable. We are accustomed to great food and service as well as ambiance at this price point. This was not it.

One of my favorite places in Madrid! This hotel bar serves up some of my favorite cocktails in Madrid! Here you can find the amazing bartender Dio. Although I have never stayed in the hotel as I live here in the city, I have gone out of my way to make it one of my local spots. The atmosphere is such a vibe as well as the staff and cocktails being excellent.

I booked a lunch reservation here due to the proximity to museums and activities I had planned for the day. I usually avoid hotel restaurants (IYKYK) but broke my rule for convenience. It looked beautiful, and I was hoping for a pleasant lunch in a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, my experience was not great. They had a set lunch menu, but I chose to order off of it - I’ve eaten few vegetables since arriving in Madrid, and I was craving a good salad. Cesar salads are pretty standard and hard to mess up, so that’s what I ordered. The cesar salad I received was very overdressed, and the dressing was not good - it was thick and gloppy with little flavor. The egg on top was undercooked and a little too wiggly jiggly for me. The bowl it was served in was hard to eat out of. I went for the ambiance and was seated in an area behind decorative trees that were blocking the view of the glass ceiling. Overall it was a pretty disappointing experience, especially for the price. I might come back for a drink, but I would not come back for food.

La Cupola inside The Palace Hotel is an absolute vibe—elegance without the fuss. We didn’t sit in the main restaurant but cozied up at the bar instead, which honestly was the perfect call. The girls split a burger and fries (which they devoured), while I sipped on a refreshing afternoon and espresso.
What made it special? The ambiance. Think: a soaring glass dome from 1912, natural light flooding in, and a live pianist filling the space with soft, timeless melodies. In the afternoon, they brought out complimentary chips and some truly delicious olives—unexpected and so appreciated.
It’s the kind of place where history and luxury meet, but it still feels warm and welcoming, even with kids in tow. Honestly, one of those picture-perfect moments you want to bottle up.

After seeing the glass dome online, we wanted to check it out. We were able to drop in for dessert and coffee and it was as advertised. The velvet chairs, linen napkins and evening glow from the dome were delightful. Topped off by a perfectly mixed Irish Coffee and Tarte Tatin with cinnamon ice cream. A very special and sophisticated way to spend an evening.

Touristy, good overall but nothing extraordinary!! Service was very slow and the place was half full, fish was fantastic, the chicken was like dessert, so sweet you couldnt even eat it!! Just ok, although it looks better in pictures

Phenomenal spot! Gorgeous venue with an excellent menu. We had Natalia as our server and she is wonderful. She told about the history of the restaurant, the wine, and was very knowledgeable.
My friends and I shared few tapas and had main dishes. I highly recommend the seafood rice and the croquettes.
This is super close to the Cathedral and Royal Palace - definitely a great place for lunch!

The entire staff is extraordinary—so polite, friendly, and attentive. A very special shout-out to our waiter, who took such great care of us! Their service was beyond exceptional, genuinely lovely, and made our visit extra memorable.
I can’t recommend this place enough! I’ll definitely be coming back very soon.

The best. Maybe you could get rid of this big palace in front of the window and have a nice view on the garden. But Karim and Wilson took so good care of us that we could look over that.
Tips for Dining Near the Royal Palace
Navigating the dining scene around a major landmark requires a bit of local knowledge to avoid common pitfalls and maximize your experience. Spanish meal times, tipping customs, and ordering etiquette differ significantly from other parts of the world. Understanding these nuances will help you blend in seamlessly and enjoy your meal exactly as the locals do.
Time Your Meal Like a Local. Spanish dining hours are famously late, with lunch typically starting around 2:00 PM and dinner rarely beginning before 9:00 PM. If you are hungry immediately after touring the palace in the early afternoon, you might find many kitchens closed between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Plan to eat a substantial lunch before 3:30 PM or rely on tapas bars that serve food continuously throughout the afternoon.
Look Beyond the Main Plaza. Restaurants with a direct view of the palace facade often charge a premium for the scenery rather than the food quality. Walk just five minutes north toward Plaza de España or east toward Calle Mayor to find more authentic pricing and better cooking. The side streets often hide the true gems where locals actually eat.
Embrace the Menú del Día. For the best value, ask if the restaurant offers a "Menú del Día" during lunch hours. This fixed-price menu usually includes a starter, main course, dessert or coffee, and a drink for a very reasonable price. It is the standard way working Madrileños eat lunch and offers an excellent opportunity to sample traditional dishes without overspending.
Order the Regional Specialties. While you can find paella everywhere, this is not the region where it originates. Instead, focus on Castilian dishes like cocido madrileño, callos a la madrileña, or huevos rotos. Look for restaurants that specialize in roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and rich stews to taste the true culinary identity of Madrid.
Reserve Ahead for Dinner. If you have your heart set on a specific restaurant for an evening meal, do not rely on walking in. Many of the better establishments are small and fill up quickly with locals and tourists alike. A quick phone call or an online reservation made earlier in the day can save you from a long wait or disappointment.
Check the IVA and Service Charges. Most menus in Spain include the 10% IVA tax in the listed price, and tipping is entirely optional and modest. Leaving a few euros in coins or up to 5% for exceptional service is considered polite but not mandatory. Do not feel pressured to add a large gratuity unless you feel the service truly warranted it.
Wandering through the historic heart of Madrid works up a serious appetite, and the area surrounding the Royal Palace is uniquely positioned to satisfy it. Whether you choose a historic tavern that has served royalty or a modern tapas bar pushing culinary boundaries, you are participating in a tradition that stretches back centuries. The clinking of glasses, the aroma of garlic and olive oil, and the lively chatter of diners are as much a part of the palace district as the architecture itself.
Take your time, order a glass of vermouth, and soak in the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most vibrant dining scenes. With the right knowledge and a willingness to explore beyond the obvious, your meal near the Palacio Real will be an unforgettable part of your Madrid story. Buen provecho.
