12 Best Cafes Near Museo Nacional del Prado

After a morning spent wandering the halls of the Prado, absorbing the genius of Velázquez, Goya, and El Bosco, the sensory overload is real. The quiet, climate-controlled galleries eventually give way to a different kind of hunger—not just for knowledge, but for a strong coffee and a quiet place to sit. Fortunately, the area surrounding Madrid’s most famous museum is a vibrant neighborhood rather than a sterile tourist zone. Stepping out onto the Paseo del Prado, you are surrounded by the sounds of the city and the promise of a perfect caffeine fix.

The challenge, however, lies in distinguishing the genuine local gems from the overpriced tourist traps that inevitably spring up near major attractions. You do not want a mediocre espresso served with a side of pre-packaged pastries when you could have a meticulously sourced single-origin brew. The streets of Jerónimos, Huertas, and Lavapiés are teeming with options that cater to every taste, from traditional Spanish roasters to modern third-wave specialists. Knowing where to look transforms a simple coffee break into an essential part of the Madrid experience.

This guide is curated with a focus on quality, atmosphere, and proximity, ensuring you do not waste precious sightseeing time walking in the wrong direction. We have considered the barista’s craft, the uniqueness of the setting, and the value offered to ensure you leave refreshed and ready for more art. Whether you are looking for a quick pick-me-up at the bar or a leisurely brunch in a sun-drenched plaza, there is a perfect spot waiting just around the corner. Your feet have already done the hard work; let the coffee be the reward.

Understanding the local rhythm is key to enjoying these spaces like a local. Spaniards often take their coffee standing at the bar for a quick, cheaper, and more social experience, but sitting at a table is perfect for resting weary museum legs. You will also notice that specialty coffee culture has exploded in Madrid, blending seamlessly with the traditional cafés that have served the literary elite for decades. This fusion means you can find everything from a classic café con leche to a meticulously poured V60 within a ten-minute walk of the museum steps.

We have personally visited and vetted these locations, prioritizing those that offer consistency and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The goal is to provide a list that satisfies the connoisseur looking for nuanced flavors and the tired traveler simply needing a reliable, delicious cup. You will find spots steeped in history where writers once argued, and modern minimalist spaces where the focus is purely on the bean. Each offers a distinct reason to pause and savor the moment.

By choosing the right café, you are not just hydrating; you are participating in a vital part of Madrid’s social fabric. It is a chance to rest your legs, plan your next move, and watch the city pass by. The proximity to the Prado means these establishments are used to a diverse clientele, but the best ones never sacrifice their soul for convenience. They remain anchored in the neighborhood’s character, welcoming art lovers with open arms and excellent coffee.

Below, you will find a handpicked selection of the best cafes near the Museo Nacional del Prado. Each entry has been chosen for its unique ability to enhance your visit to the Golden Triangle of Art. Prepare to discover hidden patios, historic interiors, and some of the most passionate coffee professionals in the capital.

Went here one year ago today with my girlfriend and our friend. We got coffee, salmon bagel, lemon tart and a Tarta de Queso/Basque cheesecake. It tasted delicious. Recommend.

We enjoyed our lunch at cafe Prado. The food was delicious and a great way to take a break in the middle of our full day visiting the Prado.

The cakes are really good, but the coffees have to be much much better. The order line, you wait about 10 minutes. You bring and take away the tray with the order yourself. The prices are higher than the average because it is a cafe in a museum.

We were delighted with what we found inside the museum. Food quality in the restaurant (not the cafe part but the part with table cloth & waiter service) much better than expected. Service was good too. It was a delight to find as we didn’t need to venture out in the middle of our 8 hours stay inside the Prado.

Don’t be turned off by the negative reviews. This is an excellent museum cafe and we’ve eaten in plenty of them. Ate there twice while visiting the Prado on two different days and both times the food was excellent. Fantastic Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, with small strips of bacon, cheese, tomatoes, and more, tossed with a delicious dressing. My husband enjoyed a ham & cheese sandwich made on crusty bread, like a mini baguette. Sparkling water to drink. For dessert we tried the carrot cake. It was freshly made and not too sugary sweet; the icing was light and creamy plus it was served at room temperature so that the full flavors came through. Two days later we ate in the Prado Museum cafe again, in the late afternoon on a Monday, experiencing excellent food and service. My husband and I split a pastrami sandwich with greens (rocket?), cheese, pickles, mustard/mayo, on brioche, and lightly warmed up - it was so good! Fresh pressed orange juice was not bitter and tasted like it was just pressed. For dessert, we split a slice of lemon cake that was room temperature and like homemade. The coffees with hot milk were excellent. We both agreed the cafe food was delicious at this world class museum and next time we want to try its restaurant. We ate inside with real cutlery and plates, saucers and cups. Not sure why some posts have pictures of paper cups. This is a review of the Prado Museum Cafe inside the museum, after paying for entry and passing through security.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham. The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.

Busy vibe. The baked eggs are delicious. The salmon toasty is so good. Strongly recommended! Also the homemade peanut butter toast is so unique. the roasted peanut with honey and banana perfectly matched.

I love it! And definitely must have the baked eggs! Is a must! You will regret if you skip it! Thanks for a wonderful yummy breakfast! It brightened my day in Madrid

Highly recommend this coffee shop! Delicious food, treats, coffee, smoothies, and so much more! We found ourselves here everyday of our trip! Something we could not miss before getting our day started! Everyone is so kind, with lively energy, lots of seating as well outside! I would recommend this place to everyone! Highlight of our trip!

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)

The atmosphere is great for a relaxing coffee break. The Saobao was absolutely delicious—fluffy, flavorful, and a total highlight. The coffee was solid, complementing the food nicely. Highly recommend this charming spot for a tasty treat and a cozy vibe!

The Açaí bowls were absolutely delicious and tasted really fresh and bio. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I also loved the originality of the writings on the wall, it gave the place a unique and creative vibe. Definitely a spot I would come back to!

Very good coffee and food. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service was friendly throughout our visit. Especially the toasts were absolutely delicious — perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Good specialty coffee, simple, yet incredibly good food! I keep coming back for their salad bowl with shredded chicken, tomatoes, edamame & pecans - it’s so balanced in taste and in ingredients💔 Tried their sweet options as well - the oats, the homemade nut butter toast, the pancakes - all of them are worthy as well. Definitely recommend this place, I go there super often myself🫶🏻
Christian Breitkreutz★★★★★
Very nice coffee shop with tasty pastries and nice staff. Good place to hang out after visiting one of the two big museums to rest your legs and relax. You can also stop for breakfast before you move on. They have sweet and savory snacks.
Natalia Sarabia★★★★★
Everything we tried was so good. The carrot cake is not pictured but also delicious. We thought the cacio e pepe scrambled eggs were so creative! The place in itself is so creative. It’s everything we love about Madrid. Saved as a favorite and will be back for another iced latte with hazelnut syrup.
Robert Schneider★★★★★
Good Coffee, nice people, Great Breakfast! Also nice Place and General. Like the Mix with the Books. What I don’t like is the cheap vinyl floor. I bet the original surface a few layers beloe would have charm
Doğa Can★★★★★
Had the chicken sandwich with spicy mayo and a cold brew both were really beautiful. Love their branding and the overall atmosphere but for me the moment this place became a “5 Star” establishment was the moment is stepped in the bathroom. It’s a clean and comfortable bathroom but the wall art made my day. I wont give away and spoil the experience for you, but all I can say that you will be well entertained 😌

The food was absolutely delicious, especially the sea bass ,onion soup, huevos rotos with Iberian ham and truffle risotto. Sebastian was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back!

When we arrived they didn't serve coffee because their coffee machine was broken. But we stayed to drink a lemonade. It's very nice inside, they have many tables. Avara has a few tables for 2 people near the place.
Dražen Grbić★★★★★
We had: Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato) Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍 Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate. For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.

Walk in customers on a cold afternoon after visit to Prado museum. Was happy that food was being served from 1230pm onwards. Enjoyed the hearty chicken soup and the flavourful pumpkin soup.
Mauro Deffendini★★★★☆
Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite. The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special. The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special. What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

I loved it here. The vibe is amazing, my favourite so far in Barcelona and Madrid. Lots of seating options, big windows, comfortable-looking chairs, tables for working or visiting. The decaffeinado vanilla iced latte was delicious, although the apple cake was not my favourite, but that's personal preference as I was expecting a coffee cake texture. So that's my mistake for not looking closely ahead of time. The lemon coffee cake looked delicious. I would absolutely love to come back and sit in. The service was lovely and worked with my broken Spanish.
Nina Gore★★★★★
Best brownie I ever eat!🩷also very good tea and cozy vibe! 🙂

Great salads, great tostadas. Prices are amazingly affordable. The salmon salad was the best! Great, affordable place for lunch after a morning at Parque Retiro or El Prado.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This little coffee shop is such a hidden gem! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee and either relaxing or getting some work done. The coffee itself is excellent—smooth, rich, and clearly made with care. What really stood out, though, was the service. Gloria, the host, was absolutely wonderful. She greeted me with a genuine smile and made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. She took the time to recommend a drink based on what I like and even checked in to make sure everything was just right. You can tell she truly cares about every guest’s experience. Between the quality of the drinks and Gloria’s warmth, this spot is definitely worth visiting. I’ll be coming back for sure!
Susan Baker★★★★★
Excellent coffee! Cozy! Just two blocks South of El Prado, Eugene and his team provide excellent service, delicious food and pastries, and chill atmosphere for breakfast, lunch or early dinner. The early dinner (arrive by eight for 8:30 closing) is a plus when you don’t want to wait ‘til restaurants reopen for dinner after 8:30, and if you don’t want to just eat tapas again between five and eight. Includes super fresh salads, sandwiches, and pastries. It’s our favorite place in the stretch between el Prado and Atocha Train Station on the edge of the delightful Las Huertas neighborhood. Tómatelo con calma!

This café has that cute, cozy, local vibe. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the staff were very kind and friendly. It has a warm, simple, "homey" atmosphere! Natural pear and lemon juice, a delicacy. We served Tortilla de patatas hecha con huevos amperos, pan con tomate y ensaladita.❤️
Lynn Tan★★★★★
This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.
Dimitri Katsabanis★★★★★
Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.
Amit Pradhan★★★★★
We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.

What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid

Really nice breakfast/brunch place. Affordable, tasty and fresh. The only downfall was that we had to wait for a table a bit but it was well handled by the waiters. We got mascarpone and avocado toast, which were exceptional, along with two American sandwiches (burgers). Special thanks to the waiter that had his first working day - you did more than well managing our inquiries ;). I recommend!
Carmela Ver★★★★★
Cute cafe where you can have an early breakfast. We enjoyed the avocado toast and sweet potato fries. The coffee is also delicious here. The inside is a little small so it may be difficult for parties larger than 4 to get a table
Marinette Leclerc★★★☆☆
I’ve been here multiple times and genuinely love the coffee, which is why I was excited to finally try the brunch with a friend. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. The pancakes were honestly inedible, you have to pay extra for every topping (which is fine), but even with fruit and syrup they were incredibly bitter, almost spicy in a wasabi-like way that scratched the throat. I managed to force down one thanks to the fruits and left the other. I’m surprised given how good the coffee is, I think there’s definitely room for improvement, especially considering you can find better brunch options at a lower price point nearby.
Brigita Grine★★★★★
I stopped by for a lunch and I enjoyed my meal a lot. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic after a half-marathon, but I appreciated that staff tried to accommodate everyone as best as they could and did it with a smile. One staff member spoke English which was very helpful. The place seems popular among tourists and expats. My sandwich was exceptional and served quickly. I wouldn’t recommend GF cookies - flavour was nice, but it fell apart as soon as you bite into it. Overall, I pretty good option for a GF meal.
A. Alhussami★★★★☆
Hidden on a narrow street, this modern coffee shop is easy to miss but usually packed. We waited about 15 minutes and got seats at the counter. The croissant was fluffy and crunchy, and both the matcha and flat white were spot-on. Great vibe and quality coffee, really worth a stop!

Very tasty, fresh dishes. Cute cat on the coffee was an extra nice touch. The food sizes were good value for money too. Was pleasing to see a fully accessible (and clean) gender neutral toilet too. Mind you, I don't think any of the inside seating is wheelchair friendly, but outside is. We would happily come back again. Thank you!

Fantastic brunch spot! Fresh, high-quality ingredients, excellent specialty coffee, and beautifully presented dishes. Friendly service, a great atmosphere, and outstanding value. One of the best breakfast and brunch experiences in Madrid. Highly recommended! What a breakfast in Madrid!

Had brunch here recently. Overall, it was alright and the atmosphere was nice, but I was a bit disappointed with the cinnamon roll as it didn’t taste fresh. The rest was okay, but I expected better, especially for the pastries.

We tried the place on a Sunday night because of the great reviews and it didn't disappoint, so much so that we came the following night as well. The food is really good quality and very reasonably priced - the croquetas and the tortilla are to die for but everything else on the tapas menu is fantastic. The service is amazing, the waiter is really friendly and welcoming. The first night he gave our son a chocolate doughnut and the second night brought us two slices of a yummy chocolate cake, as a treat! Highly recommended!

Loved this place so much I came back the next day. A cute and cozy cafe with great lighting, good music, kind staff and wonderful food. Some of the tables are old Singer sewing tables which was such a nice touch. I tried the Turkish eggs the first day and added a side of halloumi (a must…it’s fantastic) and the next day I got the staff bowl with sweet potatoes, pulled pork, quinoa, etc. The food is comforting and flavorful while still feeling healthy. I also enjoyed an iced matcha latte with oat milk and another time tried their glow smoothie. Can’t recommend this place enough. I still have to go back to try the grilled cheese!

I had a wonderful experience at Nómade Café in Madrid and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy and welcoming brunch spot. From the moment I walked in, I felt the warm and relaxed atmosphere that makes this place so special. The interior is charming and comfortable, creating the perfect setting to enjoy a slow breakfast or a pleasant afternoon coffee. One of the highlights of my visit was definitely the freshness of the food. Every dish tasted like it was prepared with high-quality ingredients and great attention to detail. The vegetables were crisp and vibrant, the bread was perfectly toasted, and everything was beautifully presented. You can truly tell that the kitchen takes pride in serving fresh, flavorful meals. Whether you choose a savory brunch plate or something sweet, the quality is consistently impressive. Another aspect that made my visit memorable was the kindness and professionalism of the staff. The employees were incredibly polite, attentive, and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable, answered our questions with a smile, and created a genuinely welcoming environment. It’s always a pleasure to dine somewhere where the team clearly cares about customer satisfaction. In addition to the excellent food and service, the prices are very reasonable for the quality offered. Considering the freshness of the ingredients, generous portions, and the central location, the café provides great value for money. It’s refreshing to find a place that combines high standards with affordable pricing. Overall, Nómade Café is a fantastic spot in Madrid for fresh food, kind service, and fair prices. I will definitely be coming back on my next visit!
Vamos★★★★☆
A stylish neighbourhood cafe, serving healthy food options. It’s not on the main street so you may not come across it on your way, but a little bit of pre-Madrid work might easily take you there. The reviews and ratings are highly popular. I was there by opening hour, so I didn’t experience any wait time, but when I was leaving, the place was full. It didn’t take too long after my order, and the filter coffee was served first. The ingredients were fresh and of high quality, which made the taste top-notch. The service team was attentive, and the prices were reasonable. Clean WCs, free WiFi, and spotless tables made my rating. A second visit was deserved.

The food was excellent. We had the cannelloni with beef, pumpkin purée, and béchamel sauce, as well as the special with jamón, baby potatoes, and cheese. For an appetizer, we ordered fried calamari with aioli and lemon. Everything was fresh, tender, and very flavorful. We shared the dishes between three people and left completely full. We were also served bread with butter, almonds, and hummus. The accompaniments were nice, but the bread was very cold—almost like airplane bread. Warming it up would make a noticeable difference. The restaurant also offered us truffles for dessert, which were delicious and a very thoughtful touch that elevated the overall experience. Prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portions are generous. The service was professional, and the location is excellent, with a view of the palace. The only downside was that the staff did not speak English at all, although this seems to be something you may encounter in many places across Madrid.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every time I come to Madrid, it’s impossible not to visit Café de Oriente. It has become one of my absolute favorite places. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is elegant, and the location is simply stunning. A special thank you to Daniel for his exceptional service. He is professional, attentive, warm, and always makes every visit feel special. His hospitality is one of the reasons I keep coming back. I highly recommend Café de Oriente to anyone visiting Madrid. I can’t wait for my next visit!

Had a great experience at Café de Oriente for a special birthday dinner in a gorgeous private room. The waiters assigned to us specifically were amazing and so was the food, which was both of great quality and variety, and adapted to everyone's needs!

Excellent location, but the waiters have a pitiful attitude. No customer service or pleasantries ( note the waiter in the picture specifically but not just him ! ) are involved with taking your overpriced order. Definitely won't return !

Great location and excellent service, but the food needs improvement. This is a lovely spot for lunch, offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace. The menu and wine list are both very good. We ordered two different paellas, one black and one white. The rice was flavorful and cooked perfectly, with an excellent texture. However, both dishes were notably lacking in seafood. A great paella should be overflowing with fish and shellfish, but here the dishes consisted of about 80% rice. A venue with such a prime location, attentive service, and elegant surroundings deserves a stronger kitchen.

Tips for Enjoying Cafes Near the Prado

To make the most of your coffee break in this historic area, it helps to understand a few local nuances. While the cafes near the museum are accustomed to international visitors, a little insider knowledge can save you time, money, and ensure you get the best possible experience. The following tips will help you navigate the scene with the confidence of a Madrileño.

Timing is Everything: If you want a quiet, relaxed experience, avoid the immediate post-lunch rush (roughly 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM) and the late morning brunch peak on weekends. Spaniards typically eat lunch late, so cafes often fill up quickly once the lunch crowd finishes. For the best light and a calmer atmosphere, visit mid-morning on a weekday or early evening before the tapas rush begins.

Understand the Price Structure: In almost all traditional Spanish cafes, the price you pay depends on where you consume your drink. A coffee at the bar (en barra) is significantly cheaper than a coffee at a table (en mesa). If you are on a budget or just need a quick caffeine hit, stand at the bar. If you are resting your feet, paying the small surcharge for a table is usually worth it for the comfort and people-watching opportunities.

Know Your Coffee Order: While "latte" is understood, ordering like a local helps. A café solo is an espresso, a cortado is an espresso with a splash of milk, a café con leche is half coffee and half hot milk, and a carajillo is an espresso with alcohol (usually brandy or rum). If you want a cold coffee in the summer, ask for a café con hielo, which is an espresso served with a glass of ice.

Embrace the "Tostada" or Pastry: Coffee in Madrid is almost always a social or culinary event, not just a caffeine delivery system. Most cafes near the Prado offer excellent tostadas (toasted baguette) with tomato and olive oil, or fresh pastries. Even if you are not hungry, consider a small bite; it is an essential part of the local ritual and sustains you for more gallery walking.

Carry a Little Cash: While contactless payments and credit cards are widely accepted in Madrid, some of the smaller, traditional, or family-run cafes may have a minimum spend for card transactions or prefer cash. Having a few euros on hand ensures you can pop into any tiny, charming spot without the awkwardness of a declined card machine or minimum purchase requirement.

Taking the time to find a great café is about more than just caffeine; it is about absorbing the atmosphere of Madrid. The area around the Prado is one of the most beautiful and walkable in the city, and these coffee breaks serve as the perfect bridge between the artistic masterpieces inside the museum and the vibrant street life outside. It allows you to process what you have seen while fueling up for the next leg of your journey.

Whether you opt for a historic literary haunt or a sleek specialty coffee bar, the experience will add a layer of warmth to your cultural itinerary. So, step out of the Prado, follow the scent of roasting beans, and give yourself permission to sit, sip, and simply be in Madrid.
