10 Best Breakfast and Brunch Near Puerta de Alcalá

Waking up in Madrid comes with a specific kind of energy. The city eases into the morning slowly, but by mid-morning, the sidewalks are buzzing with locals heading out for their most cherished ritual: breakfast. While tapas dominate the evening hours, the morning belongs to toasted bread, ripe tomatoes, and perfectly pulled espresso.

If you find yourself near the iconic Puerta de Alcalá, you are standing at the crossroads of Madrid’s most elegant neighborhoods. The proximity to the Retiro Park, the Salamanca district, and the Golden Triangle of Art makes this a prime location for a memorable meal. However, the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming for a hungry visitor.

The area surrounding this neoclassical monument offers a fascinating mix of traditional Spanish cafés and modern, health-conscious brunch spots. Whether you are looking for a quick stand-up coffee and pastry or a leisurely multi-course brunch, this zone delivers on all fronts. The key is knowing where to separate the tourist traps from the genuine local favorites.

We have spent considerable time exploring the streets radiating from this historic gate to curate a list that prioritizes quality and atmosphere. This guide focuses on venues that offer not just food, but a true sense of place. You will find options ranging from historic institutions that have served Madrileños for over a century to trendy new spots that are redefining the city’s brunch culture.

Before diving into the specific recommendations, it is important to understand the local timing. Traditional Spanish breakfast is usually light and early, while the "brunch" trend—often featuring eggs, pancakes, and avocado toast—tends to start later, usually around 11:00 AM. Many of the best spots require a bit of patience on weekends, as the "sobremesa" culture means tables turn slowly.

This list is designed to be your definitive resource for morning dining in this historic district. We have included a variety of price points and styles to suit solo travelers, couples, and families. No matter which venue you choose, you are guaranteed a meal that will fuel a day of exploring the Spanish capital.

Here are the ten best breakfast and brunch spots located within walking distance of the Puerta de Alcalá.

Wonderful decoration. Impressive latte art which is copying my friend’s outfit!! Very sweet coffee of course. They make fresh juices from the squeezing machine. Food looks good and tastes good. Highly recommended.

Cutest cafe. Very welcoming. The coffee was yum and we got the most adorable designs on the coffee. We also asked for a personalised one as a memory for our girls trip and were surprised with an amazing design. Definitely recommended if your in Madrid 🤌🏼

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!
Kremena Ivanova★★★★★
Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind. I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️
Kamakshi Matai★★★★★
Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.
Brianna Pedraza★★★★★
Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here
Iryna Shaitanova★★★★☆
Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive. We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again. As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

Absolutely best salmon eggs Benedict ever. The coconut smoothie was delicious as well; I drank it sooo fast. 10/10 service and cutest seating areas. Loved getting a seat by the window and being able to have brunch with a gorgeous view. Perfect place to stop by after touring the palace!

Very good breakfast and brunch with fresh, quality ingredients and well-prepared dishes. The pastries and coffee were excellent, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. A great place to start the day, and one I’d happily visit again.
Trevor★★★★★
We were rushing to get to the Royal Palace on Tuesday morning and we were in dire need of some breakfast after a long day of travel the night before. We looked up some reviews and saw this place at a 4.9 and I honestly think it should have a perfect five. We had what we thought was the best breakfast we had in our 18 days of Europe here. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly cooked, presented well, And very tasty. The service was quick and once we told the waiter that we were in a rush, we were in and out in about 40 min, which is exactly what we needed to do. There are only about 15 tables in the restaurant and it is a small intimate venue but the location is almost perfect if you're looking for a place to stop or visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid. Definitely consider it if you are in the area.
Jacky Wu★★★★★
The food was absolutely delicious and full of authentic Vietnamese flavor. The pho was rich and comforting, the spring rolls were fresh and crispy, and the service was warm and attentive. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and everything felt clean and welcoming. I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!
Lars Aray★★★★★
This place is so famous in Madrid. The dishes are simply perfect, they have the right balance between softness and consistency, making them absolutely irresistible. Plus, the taste is incredible and really so high quality on the ingredients The atmosphere is so chill, and the service is friendly. One of the best pancake experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended! When I return to Madrid, I’ll definitely visit again.

Very friendly and attentive service. We were served by Noelia, and we really appreciated her warmth and cheerful attitude. The food was good, although we would have appreciated a wider selection of savoury options.

We highly recommend Billy Brunch if you're in Madrid! The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was really cool, warm, and pleasant. The whole experience was great from start to finish. A special thanks to Yuri, who was incredibly friendly, spoke excellent English, and made us feel comfortable throughout our visit. We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back. I was looking for a brunch place in Madrid that had outdoor seating so I can take in the views of the city. This was such a cute brunch place, great vibes, and the food was delicious. My server Alexis was very helpful and attentive. He served me water and made sure I was comfortable while I waited for my outside table, and he had it ready for me as soon as they were done eating. Highly recommend this place 🙂
Nazz★★★★★
Searched online for the best pancake stack and this one came up on top with 4.9 stars. Quaint place with some cool and unusual art decor, creating a warm and comfy space. We only ordered 2 pancake stacks and a coffee, which were delicious. Our waitress was Romina, and she was friendly and accommodating despite our lack of spanish. Our food took very long to come out despite the place being quiet. The bright side to this is thay we did not feel rushed at all. Another cute thing they do, is to present the bill in an egg box. Loved that. A very memorable experience.
Winnie Li★★★★☆
It’s a really cute cafe, I like the Egg Benedict, especially the potato inside! You can enjoy a good time here. Only small improvement is that for the mushroom toast is a bit dry for me. Overall it’s highly recommended for relaxing here~ Thank you the staff, Alan, is really nice ✨ providing the good service. We have a good time here.

If you are looking for an incredible meal with top-tier service, this is the place. The Burger: Absolutely incredible. A special shoutout to our waitress, Dani, who was absolutely amazing and made our experience even better. This place is highly recommended. We will definitely be back!

This was THE BEST brunch ever period. EVERY SINGLE THING on the menu is absolutely delicious and seasoned to perfection, including the ice cold fresh juices ( the green juice is the best Ive ever had I drank 3 very fast ) / chilled still water / All the coffee beverages are a home run you cannot go wrong. I highly recommend ordering one of everything plus fries and extra sides of the hollandaise sauce for dipping. The service was excellent, professional, warm, friendly and fast. The atmosphere is so comfortable upbeat and welcoming, good music such an excellent place to hang out with friends and eat delicious food!!

Carmencita is an awesome brunch spot, the staff is super friendly, the dishes come out really well served and fairly priced, the Cris Crust was delicious, and the side yogurt bowl (included in the price) had amazingly fresh fruit and homemade granola that tasted incredible, making it one of those places in Madrid you leave already planning to come back.

OMG. This place is so nice. Came here for Sunday brunch at 1:15pm. It was busy but there were several tables free. I was sat immediately. I ordered a flat white with caramel, a Detox smoothie, and the French Toast. Everything was absolutely delicious and visually stunning. The server was friendly and responsive. Such a wonderful place. Highly recommend!!

I had a lovely breakfast at Le Praliné Brunch. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The service was also excellent ,the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. The atmosphere was cozy and perfect for a relaxing brunch. Madalina M.★★★★★
Great place for brunch, will go again. The food is really good, the ingredients are fresh and high quality. The staff is nice, very polite. The atmosphere is typical brunch place, full around the time we went, 11-12, but no wait time as 1 table seem to always be free as soon as new people came. I would also like to mention that the coffee is surprisingly good, most brunch places have average coffee, but this one has such good coffee you would think it's the main product. Congrats to the entire team for the work ethic and attention to details. P.S. They have pictures for the food and it comes looking exactly like the pictures.
Katie May★★★★★
The BEST brunch spot! The special for 20€ had so much food that you could probably share with another person. Everything was so fresh, portions were great, and coffee was fantastic.
Alexandra Carremans★★★★★
Lovely place for brunch, I had the kimchi bagel with chicken. Best bagel I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot. On the menu you can scan a Qr code for pictures of each dish, and it will come out looking as beautiful as on the picture. 10/10 recommend.

What a great brunch spot! Walking in during the very late morning on a Friday in September, I got a seat right away. The space is small, but they use the space well to fit a handful of small tables. The server was very quick and friendly. He recommended the chilaquiles with beef and wow. It was excellent as was the pistachio latte. I’d definitely go back!
Jacques van Niekerk★★★★★
What a wonderful find in the heart of La Latina! Cocuiza is a charming, quaint brunch spot where it’s immediately clear that real time, care, and attention go into every dish. Everything we tried was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented, with interesting flavour combinations that were both creative and absolutely delicious. The recommendations were excellent and made the whole experience even better. The owner was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and took the time to explain everything perfectly, which added such a personal touch to our visit. A truly special little place with fantastic food, unique flavours, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommended — we will definitely be coming back!
Emmett Grames★★★★★
Surprisingly large portions, be ready to share if you order one of the pancake stacks. Really good food, fresh drinks, and service, the prices are a bit higher but for the quantity and quality it really is worth it. The staff were very friendly. We got there early on a Sunday, but if you plan to go mid-morning you might want to call ahead and reserve a table, they were very busy when we left, with a line out the door.
Olivia Seward★★★★★
Best breakfast place in Madrid. If you care about food…come here!! The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had in my life- perfect flavor and perfect texture. The hash browns were also great too. I will be coming back to try more on the menu. Also mentioning there’s self serve water which is great!! So happy we found this spot.
Sarah Terry★★★★★
I got the watermelon juice & sweet salty chicken. This is way better than any chicken & waffles I’ve had in the USA. Amazing. Great sauce& flavor. I like the coleslaw on it too. It was very busy so I would recommend making a reservation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve visited this Brunch & Cake location in Madrid more than eight times, and without a doubt, it’s my favorite branch among all the Brunch & Cake locations I’ve been to. The food is consistently excellent, the presentation is beautiful, and the atmosphere is always warm and inviting. No matter how many times I visit, the quality and service never disappoint. A very special thank you to “Sergi”. He consistently went above and beyond to make my experience personal and unforgettable. His kindness, professionalism, and genuine care for guests are exceptional. People like him are the reason customers keep coming back. Thank you to the entire team for maintaining such a high standard every single time. I can’t recommend this place enough, and I’ll definitely be returning again and again.

Nice cozy brunch/cafe in Salamanca with really lovely ambiance. The food are plated in a fancier way, food quality and taste are good. A little bit pricier of course but it fits when you have a date, or have girly brunch/hanging out with girl friends or if with kids as well. It’s pet friendly as well 🙂
AK★★★★★
Brunch & Cake is a charming spot with a cute, cozy ambience that instantly makes you feel at ease. Their pastries are outstanding, and they offer great brunch options for vegetarians as well. Friendly service rounds out a lovely overall experience.

The atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming. The food and drinks were served quickly, and everything was delicious. The only downside was that the food was a bit too salty.
Dana Toleuzhan★★★★★
I’ve been here twice and both visits were excellent! The food is prepared surprisingly fast, and everything I’ve tried has been absolutely delicious. If you’re coming with someone, I highly recommend ordering a mix of sweet and savory dishes so you can share and try more of the menu. Really quick service — we were in a hurry and quickly found a table (no waiting) and got our order fast despite the fact that it was a weekend morning and breakfast time. The food is good and tasty, we took omlette and salmon croissant. The only con is the price for coffee, you need to pay for alternative milk in addition to the coffee itself costing about 3.5, meaning the final price for a small cup of coffee is above average.
Sharon Rossignuolo★★★★★
Lovely little cafe, beautiful decor and very cosy. Staff friendly and helpful. Had a tasty and flavourful açai bowl. Coffee was perfect 🤩
Chahine Kassou★★★★★
Very nice coffee shop, excellent food for reasonable prices, if you want a breakfast or simply a coffee break in the city center don’t hesitate this place is perfect 💫
James Pollack★★★★★
10/10 would go every day - yum! I went 3 mornings while visiting Madrid. You have to try the salty pancakes once and the salmon Benedict was perfect twice. Excellent food. Super friendly service. What else is there to ask for? Go now!
Secil OZ★★★★★
Indiscreto Brunch in Madrid truly impressed us with its vibrant, welcoming vibe and an array of fresh, delightful dishes. I enjoyed a perfectly balanced avocado toast with poached eggs, while my partner’s Benedict was equally satisfying. Our son couldn’t get enough of the açaí bowl—and his passion fruit lemonade was an absolute hit. We rounded off our meal with a moist, flavorful carrot cake, and the fresh OJ and expertly brewed coffee added just the right touch to our experience. Overall, it’s a gem of a brunch spot that promises quality food and a relaxed ambiance, making it a perfect family outing. Enjoy your visit!

We went there as a couple only looking for some great cocktails (one of their strongest points) and sweets. Ainoha who served us was very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond. 5 stars for her. What we did not appreciate - hence my low rating: - we had to wait at least 20 minutes. For good restaurants that’s understandable. However there were 4 seats available upstairs (two at the bar, two at a free table). 5 people waiting before us, none of them seated - nor us - at these free seats. When we finally got seated downstairs there were two other free tables with 4 more free seats. - the cocktail guy (or girl 🤍) was free today. So they had no cocktails. Unacceptable for such a busy place in the middle of Madrid - we had two of the menu’s stars: the pistachio pancakes and the cinnamon rolls. The pancakes were a disappointment for me - three pancakes, good looking, with a bit of pistachio frosting and icecream on top. But tasteless otherwise. I would not recommend. I appreciated the roll - very sweet for my husband yet ok for me. - very difficult to drink coffee out of the very nice looking cups I would definitely not recommend nor come again.
Pauline Philippi★★★★★
This breakfast spot was absolutely incredible!! We just needed a place that opened early before we left for the airport, and we were very happy for an 8am opening. My daughter had the burger (yes, for breakfast, and she wasn’t the only one!) and I had the French toast. I didn’t get to taste the burger because it was completely gone before I had a chance to ask for a bite. But the French toast, besides the beautiful display, came with a little scoop of ice cream that nicely replaced the need for syrup, plus fresh strawberries and blueberries and a caramelized banana. The details were so nicely done. Even my cappuccino was so beautifully crafted! I cannot recommend this place enough. Every food item that came out to other tables looks delicious and I’m sending my other daughter here when she studies in Madrid next semester!
Juan Campo★★★★☆
It’s a popular tourist spot, so it’s usually bustling with visitors, partly because of its reputation and the hype surrounding it. The atmosphere is lively, but it definitely feels quite touristy. The food is decent overall, although the menu leans heavily toward desserts. One thing I didn’t particularly like is their practice of encouraging customers to leave a five-star review at the end of the meal. When it seems to be a standard part of the experience, it takes away some of the authenticity and usefulness of the reviews when deciding whether to visit. The approach to tipping also felt a bit excessive. Overall, the food is decent, but considering the crowds and potential wait, I’m not sure the experience is worth the hype.
Sarah Dettmann★★★★★
Brunch here ! Such a good spot. Amazing food, service, and I loved the vibes/ decor. The salmon Benedict was super fresh, and the potato waffle with truffle mushroom is a must if you love mushrooms. The Pistachio Obsession café was creamy, aesthetic, and honestly so good. Alejandro gave great service, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Would definitely go back.
The Foodie Crusader★★★★★
This place had a bit of a wait, but i think it was worth it. Its very nice and cozy inside. The staff is nice and friendly. The food was excellent. The latte was delicious. The Spanish omelet was super yummy. It basically reminds me of potatoes au gratin wrapped with a thin sheet of egg. I got mine with pork belly and it was delicious and filling for me. We ordered the French toast by mistake but it worked out for us. It was absolutely delicious. The toast was soft, sweet, and flavorful, the ice cream and fresh berries made it all come together nicely. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back, and i would make this a must visit.

Tips for Enjoying Breakfast Near Puerta de Alcalá

To truly maximize your culinary experience in this upscale part of Madrid, it helps to understand a few local nuances. The dining culture here blends fast-paced city life with a deep appreciation for slow, social meals. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, these practical tips will help you navigate the menus and timings like a local, ensuring you get the best table and the freshest food available.

  1. Distinguish Between Sweet and Savory Traditions: Many traditional cafés serve "pan con tomate" (bread with crushed tomato and olive oil) as the savory standard, while pastries like "napolitanas" (chocolate or cream-filled croissants) cover the sweet cravings. Don’t expect a full English fry-up in a traditional Spanish bar; instead, embrace the local simplicity.
  2. Check the "Menú del Día" Timing: If you sleep in and your breakfast runs past 1:00 PM, many restaurants will switch to their lunch menus. If you still want eggs or brunch items, stick to the dedicated "brunch" cafés which often serve their specialty menus until 4:00 PM or all day.
  3. Weekend Reservations Are Essential: The area near the Retiro Park is incredibly popular with local families on Saturdays and Sundays. If you have your heart set on a specific trendy brunch spot, call ahead or book online to avoid a 45-minute wait on the sidewalk.
  4. Embrace the Bar Stool Culture: For the most authentic and cheapest experience, look for a crowded bar counter. Ordering "a la barra" (at the bar) is often significantly cheaper than sitting at a table on the terrace, and you will get your coffee and toast much faster.
  5. Try the "Especialidad de la Casa": While it is tempting to order standard avocado toast everywhere, ask what the café is famous for. Some places specialize in "torrijas" (Spanish French toast), while others might be known for a specific blend of coffee or a house-made jam that elevates the meal.
  6. Pair Your Meal with a Walk in El Retiro: The best way to end a heavy breakfast near the Puerta de Alcalá is to walk it off. Grab a coffee to go (though less common in Spain, it is becoming more accepted) or simply stroll across the street to the Retiro Park to enjoy the morning light filtering through the trees.

The area surrounding the Puerta de Alcalá offers more than just a meal; it offers a snapshot of Madrid’s evolving gastronomic identity. You can watch the city wake up from a historic marble-top table while sipping a café con leche, or you can enjoy a modern, photogenic brunch that rivals those found in New York or London. The diversity of the neighborhood ensures that every palate and budget is catered to.

Ultimately, the best breakfast is the one that matches your mood for the day. If you are heading to the Prado Museum, a quick and light bite might serve you best. If you have a day of shopping in the Salamanca district ahead, a hearty and leisurely brunch is the perfect foundation. Trust this guide to lead you to the right table, and enjoy every bite of your morning in Madrid.
