12 Best Shopping Areas in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz might be famous for its volcanic beaches and lush botanical gardens, but the real heartbeat of this northern Tenerife town lies in its vibrant commercial streets and coastal promenades. Unlike the purpose-built resorts of the south, shopping here feels organic, blending daily local life with a laid-back holiday atmosphere. Whether you are hunting for Canarian fashion, unique souvenirs, or fresh local produce, the town offers a diverse retail landscape that rewards those willing to wander away from the hotel pool.

The geography of Puerto de la Cruz shapes its shopping experience. The old town is a maze of narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets, while the newer districts spread out toward the La Paz area and the coastal walkways. Because the town is relatively compact, you can easily combine a morning of retail therapy with an afternoon at the beach or a visit to Lago Martiánez. The absence of massive shopping malls in the immediate center is actually a strength, as it preserves the authentic character of the local businesses.

One of the biggest draws for shoppers is the tax-free status of the Canary Islands. Unlike mainland Spain, the special economic zone means that items like tobacco, alcohol, electronics, and perfume are often priced significantly lower than in the rest of Europe. While you won’t find the mega-duty-free complexes of the southern airports, the high street shops and specialty stores in Puerto de la Cruz frequently reflect these savings, making it a smart destination for bargain hunters.

However, the true value of shopping in Puerto de la Cruz isn’t just about saving money; it’s about discovering craftsmanship. The town has a strong tradition of local artisans producing high-quality goods, from intricate embroidery and traditional Canarian costumes to handmade jewelry and leatherwork. Avoiding the mass-produced magnets and heading to a local workshop not only gives you a better souvenir but also supports the island’s economy and preserves its cultural heritage.

The climate also plays a significant role in how you should approach your shopping trip. The pedestrian zones are lovely for strolling, but the humidity can be high, and the sun can be intense during midday. Smart shoppers plan their routes for the cooler morning hours or the late afternoon, when the locals come out for the traditional paseo. This allows you to browse comfortably while soaking in the authentic rhythm of the town.

From sprawling outdoor markets to chic boutiques selling Canarian aloe vera products, the variety is surprising for a town of this size. You can find everything from high-end jewelry to quirky vintage finds, often within a few blocks of each other. The key is knowing which district suits your needs, whether you want to haggle at a flea market or enjoy air-conditioned comfort in a modern store.

To help you navigate the retail landscape, we have curated a guide to the most interesting and rewarding areas to spend your money. These locations have been selected for their variety, atmosphere, and the quality of the goods on offer, ensuring you don’t waste a minute of your holiday time in a generic tourist trap.

Great place for shopping close to a beautiful stroll along the sea. This is the best resort on the island. Far superior to those on the South side. There’s a really great bus service on the island if you prefer not to hire a car.
Darren Norris★★★★★
Nice shopping centre, good selection of clothes and shoe shops, found some real bargains in the women's clothes shops and came out with a couple of extra new tops. Nice size Mercedona supermarket inside with a great selection of food and snacks.
Tenerife Julie★★★★★
Very clean shopping centre open every day (although the supermarket is shut on Sundays) Good choice of shops including Lefties, Encuentro, Intersport, Springfield, Ale Hop and many more. A nice little cafe serving cake and coffee. Other eating places include Burger King.
Maria Marenti★★★★★
It’s a small shopping centre but it has a variety of shops and goods including my child’s favourite supermarket Mercadona. I definitely recommend that you visit it
Paul Ciprian★★★☆☆
A not very spectacular shopping center. Otherwise, the same with all malls in Tenerife. A few stores of brands that you can find in many other malls in Europe, cleanliness, a Mercadona supermarket (not very rich in offers), extremely few customers. There is no fast food area inside. Outside there is a restaurant with a terrace and a small bar. Boring.

A pleasant shopping centre with an attractive interior and a beautiful roof design that gives the place a bright and spacious feel. I mainly visited to shop at SuperDino and to use the underground parking, both of which were very convenient. The centre was clean, easy to navigate, and made for a comfortable stop while exploring Puerto de la Cruz.

Puerto de la Cruz. Good commercial Centre :many shops, super market, fruit shops.. librery, lots of coffea shops , any kind of shops, restaurant. Saturday flee shops market.
David G★★★☆☆
I visited the flea market on Saturday. It was very busy. There were only a few sellers of used goods and much of it was very low quality - more like a car boot sale. The indoor section has a numbers of places to eat on the upper floor but it was too crowded for my comfort. I don’t think it was particularly worth the effort walking there and wouldn’t particularly recommend it unless you’re close by and a bit bored!
Norman Goddard★★★★★
Great market over 3 floors with a wide variety of fresh local produce. Many other artisan shops selling arts&crafts too. With a hypermarket at the rear of the ground floor it's the go to shopping centre. Every Wednesday and Saturday is the flea market selling goods old and new, you're guaranteed a bargain!

Such a lovely locals coffee shop, fresh sandwiches with fresh ingredients so tasty and very reasonably priced along with great staff. Would highly recommend! Didn’t get a chance to try the cakes but they looked amazing! Going back before we leave for home for sure!

Many pigeons inside 🙁 Several shops are permanently closed, the place is almost dead.

Great food they do a nice spaghetti bolognese but I'd say the service needs a bit of work was a little slow
Ryan Munro★★☆☆☆
We ate here last night, and quite honestly, the service was good. However, the food wasn’t up to par, which was a shame as it seemed like a lovely establishment. For our starters we had the bread with Spanish ham, which I wasn’t a fan of, but I didn’t think I would anyway, my other half enjoyed though. We also had the classic Canarian potatoes, which we’d had at every restaurant and knew what to expect, this wasn’t it. The potatoes were undercooked, and had sand grit on them, how it was there, I do not know. I had ordered a burger and chips, which like most, would have expected to come in a bun, it did not. It seemed like it was sausage meat instead of beef, and the chips were heavily undercooked, seemed very much like supermarket bought chips. My other half had the vegetarian spaghetti bolognese, which again was undercooked, and was glorified tomato sauce and spaghetti, nothing more, nothing less. Overall the only good takeaways from our evening at this establishment, was that the service was good and our Coca Cola’s, which let’s be honest, can’t be wrong.

Small canarian commercial centre with boutiques, a bakery, a cafe, and a pharmacy. I loved aderno. It had amazing pastries and good coffee. There was a shop called dharmu with beautiful table covers with canarian embroidery and unbeatable prices. They were liquidating their stock. It is a must visit if you are in the area.

This is a great shopping mall and very good transport links. However, waking from the hotel was a bit of a trek uphill and about 45 mins walk. Lots of shops and great sales. Have to wear masks and lots of security guards checking but it was not so crowded. Very clean and lots of places to eat. I really enjoyed my day out and my purchases.
Glynn JR★★★★☆
Update September 2023: Roads surrounding the centre have been resurfaced and improved. It can still get very busy and chaotic with traffic at peak times. Large mall over various levels and in a number of buildings around a central square. Lots of shops including some designer outlets and a massive supermarket. It's not an attractive mall from the outside - but it has everything you'll possibly need. The mall containing Al Campo hypermarket has a varied selection of shops and cafes.
Paul Kinney★★★★☆
A decent sized shopping mall with a decent variety of shops. Some places to eat at the outdoor part and a large supermarket is attached to the indoor part. Only €1.45 by bus (363) from La Paz in Perto De La Cruz.
Mark Rank★☆☆☆☆
There is a massive supermarket here. We didnt even look in it as we were way too hot and bothered. On another day we might have had a good look in there. The shopping mall itself was full of designer outlets at designer prices. Very expensive. And it's in the middle of nowhere. Probably appeals more to younger generations. But it just wasnt for me and the wife.... But I do have to say there is a lovely little coffee shop in there. Very friendly and helpful staff. But on a whole it was a nightmare. We had to walk around the entire complex to find where to get a taxi. There were no signs inside. We were so glad to leave here and wouldnt go back.
Iana Khoziainova★★★★★
Our family visits this place at least 2 times a week. Before we go shopping, we let our kids jump for half an hour on large air giraffe and piramide while we drink coffee at the cafe in the center garden grounds. Since there are no cars on the inside grounds, it's safe for kids to run around. There is a playground and couple paid places for them to jump around. Recently a pet store opened with lots of different animals for sale. We love to go there to check them out - it's like a free zoo 🙂 Recommend to visit.

A great mall, for modern international shopping... There's a wide selection of shops here, including international brands from across Europe - great if you want a break from 'traditional' shops of Puerto de la Cruz centre. There are also a wide range of cafes and eateries - plenty to choose from depending on your taste. Easily accessible by car, with a car park or via the bus. Note, it is walkable from PdlC - with the odd busy road to cross - but we did it with our two little ones.

Great shopping mall, lots of indoor/outdoor shops. Plenty of parking which felt safe. Did some last minute shopping there for an event and had so many options at different price points.

The building is big with three floors and has a lot of space so the children can crawl and run. And it has very nice polish shop, called Puerto Feliz, which offers coffee, excellent cheescake and other sweets, bread, polish products, tea ... Big benefit is two hour free parking underground, so in the case of rain in Puerto de la Cruz this is the space to be under the roof. On wednesdays and saturdays there is also interesting flea market with used/old things and local products (souvenirs, hand made cosas ...).

Tourists! Gift idea: Ecuadorian handmade "Panama" style sombreros. Do not miss. Excellent quality, nature fibre for tropics (5o€) and slightly thicker material (think they sold at 35€, just ask). Outdoors stalls, mostly skip finds, but do not miss this one. A gem. A couple of arts and crafts stalls. Inside: a supermarket and a few food outlets, nit hit and miss with regards to opening hours. Some shopkeepers close either Mon or Tue. I recommend the cafés/small bars inside but not always open, bear in mind.
Tenerife Julie★★★★★
A variety of shops with some selling local produce. The market is open weekly Wednesday and Saturday from 10 am until 2pm with a handicraft market on Sundays also from 10 until 2pm. The shops inside are open every day. Onside car park.
Andrew Gornall★★★★★
if only we had a social sense in England, we would have places like this. busy with shoppers, stall holders from collectables to flee market to hyperstore plus many more. Butcher, fishmongers bars, cafes, restaurants. And people talking to each other.
Ewoude Willockx★★★☆☆
Small market. On Sunday there are some art and craft stands out and inside. Only one fish, meat and fruit stand available. Athmosphere is nice although not inviting to stick around and have a drink as there is a lot of noice in the hall.

Calle la Hoya is a pedestrian street with palm trees where you'll find restaurants, local art and craft shops, fashion boutiques, cafes, bars, etc. 100% recommended!
Zapador 1★★★★★
It is one of the few streets in Puerto de la Cruz where a multitude of shops converge. This street connects the Martínez shopping center with the church square via the pedestrianized La Hoya street (an open-air shopping area). Here you will find a wide variety of shops: pharmacies, souvenir shops, liquor and smoking accessories stores, organic shops, shops selling Canarian tablecloths and other items, shoe stores with all types of high-quality shoes (brands), real estate agencies, jewelry stores, perfumeries, tour operators, clothing boutiques, consulting firms, electronics stores, hair salons, and above all, a wide range of Canarian and international cuisine, with pubs, cafes, bakeries, pastry shops, terraces, bars, wineries, and tapas restaurants. A pedestrian street parallel to the San Telmo promenade where you can stroll enjoying its shop windows and vegetation, not forgetting its square with its gardens and its Church (Our Lady of Peña de Francia). Also noteworthy are its cross streets that connect it to the sea, a true marvel.

Lovely flea market with many stalls. They are on the ground floor inside the building, on the same level outside and also on the 2nd floor on the parking spots. They have a great market on Wednesday and Saturday morning. Grab a bargain outside or inside they have a craft fair. The upper level has a variety of tapas and drinks. Cava and tapas is the favourite and the place is certainly buzzing with people. Also the fruit and veg sell fresh local products and the kitchens offer take away meals.

Not something I was planning to see. Flea market is the most uninteresting from all I visited. Prices are nice, but I didn't buy anything because there were almost nothing. Bought some fresh fruit and they were nice except the dragon fruit - it wasn't ok for my stomach

The flea market is really a jumble style sale on the upper floor, and a mix of tat and car boot style bits on the ground area. It is all slow to start so don't get there too early as they will be unpacking slowly. There is a Dino supermarket and a lovely greengrocers on the inside.

Tips for Shopping in Puerto de la Cruz

Before you head out with your wallet, there are a few local nuances that can make the difference between a frustrating experience and a highly successful haul. Understanding the local customs, timing, and payment methods will help you blend in and get the best value for your money.

Carry Some Cash – While most established stores and supermarkets accept major credit cards, many of the smaller artisan workshops, market stalls, and kiosks prefer or only accept cash. Having €20-€50 in small bills ensures you don’t miss out on a unique find at a flea market or a local bakery.

Respect the Siesta – While tourist zones often stay open, many family-run shops in the old town close between 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM. Plan your shopping for the morning or late afternoon to avoid staring at locked shutters during the hottest part of the day.

Look for the Tax-Free Signs – As mentioned, the Canary Islands have different tax rates. While the process differs slightly from the mainland VAT refund scheme, look for shops displaying "Tax Free" signage if you are buying high-value items like electronics or designer goods to ensure you are getting the best possible price.

Don’t Be Afraid to Haggle at Markets – In department stores and boutiques, prices are fixed. However, at the weekly street markets or when buying multiple items from artisan stalls, a polite negotiation is often welcomed. A friendly smile and asking for a "mejor precio" can sometimes save you a few euros.

Bring a Reusable Bag – Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the Canary Islands, and many shops charge for plastic bags. Carrying a lightweight tote bag is not only better for the environment but also makes it much easier to carry your purchases as you walk through the pedestrian streets.

Shopping in Puerto de la Cruz is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the items you buy. The joy comes from the interaction with local vendors, the discovery of a hidden courtyard selling local wine, and the leisurely pace of the experience. By exploring these distinct areas, you engage with the town on a deeper level than the average tourist.

Whether you leave with a suitcase full of Canarian rum or simply a handcrafted piece of pottery, the memories of wandering these streets will linger long after your tan fades. Take your time, stay hydrated, and enjoy the unique retail charm that this northern Tenerife gem has to offer.
