Finding a reliable pharmacy is one of the most practical concerns for both residents and travelers in any city, and Cartagena is no exception. Whether you are dealing with a sudden headache after a day of exploring the Roman Theatre, need to refill a prescription, or require specialized baby care, knowing where to go saves valuable time. The historic city centre, with its dense network of pedestrian streets and plazas, hosts a high concentration of professional health services.
Navigating the winding streets of the old town can be challenging when you are feeling unwell or are in a hurry. While most visitors focus on locating restaurants or museums, mapping out the nearest farmacia is a smart travel preparation step that often gets overlooked. In Spain, pharmacies are highly regulated and staffed by trained professionals who can offer medical advice for minor ailments without a doctor’s visit.
The Spanish pharmacy system differs slightly from other countries; you will often find that certain over-the-counter medications available elsewhere require a pharmacist’s consultation here. Additionally, you will notice the distinct green cross signage that glows outside every establishment. In Cartagena’s centre, these signs are plentiful, but the specific services, stock, and opening hours can vary significantly between locations.
Cartagena’s city centre is compact, which means you are rarely more than a five-minute walk from a pharmacy. However, if you require a specific brand of dermocosmetics, orthopedic supports, or homeopathic remedies, you may need to visit a larger store rather than a small neighborhood outlet. Understanding the landscape of pharmacies here ensures you get exactly what you need without unnecessary wandering.
Beyond simply dispensing medication, local pharmacies in Cartagena act as community health hubs. They offer blood pressure monitoring, weight checks, and advice on managing chronic conditions. For tourists, they are an invaluable resource for treating sunburn, jellyfish stings from the nearby beaches, or digestive issues that can arise from changes in diet.
To help you navigate the historic heart of the city efficiently, we have compiled a guide to the key locations where you can find professional pharmaceutical care. The following list highlights the most accessible and highly regarded establishments within the central district.

Avoid the rude old man and mardy ginger woman they have sevearly bad attitudes. I can't believe they were like they were when trying to charge 35e for a medicine I regularly pay 7e for but I think it's the fact we was English they didn't like! I got a refund and won't use them again also There is another pharmacy mearly steps away so I would use that.

I just went there with a prescription from Vitaldent and they even asked for my ID. I don't know if it's because I'm Black or if I look like I sell drugs. But I'm NEVER going back.

Cold welcome, feeling like we were bothering them, price offered twice as high as the next pharmacy, surely due to being a tourist...
Cristina Velasco García★★★★★
Excellent service. I placed an order online yesterday and it arrived the next day (in La Rioja) with several little extras and a handwritten note inside. These kinds of gestures are wonderful. I will definitely order again.

I just left this pharmacy, only 15 minutes ago. I was served unprofessionally, rushed, and rudely. When I told them I was a customer (which I was, but no longer am), they asked if I was asking for the discount. No, ma'am, I'm saying it because that's what you tell me every time I go (or used to go). I asked for another product, they told me they didn't have it (without offering any other solution), charged me, and left me hanging. I have absolutely no need to shop at that pharmacy or to put up with this kind of treatment. Neither I nor my friends and colleagues.

The posted business hours for this pharmacy are inaccurate and may cause unnecessary trips for customers. We visited on both Saturday evening and Sunday during the advertised opening hours, but the pharmacy was closed on both occasions.
We also spoke with several nearby residents who mentioned that this issue has been brought to management's attention multiple times, yet the posted hours have not been updated. Accurate business hours are important for customers, especially when seeking pharmacy services, and we hope this matter will be addressed promptly.

Unfortunately I am still trying to find where the package has been dropped due to the Non Delivery to me direct. On the due dates I was in all day but NO delivery was made and now I am having to locate the drop off point. I don't know what has gone wrong with this (probably the hauliers) as I have never had ANY problems before.

Great prices, lots of offers, and a very wide choice.
Thank you for my order, well packed, and quickly received.

Not recommended.
Has been 20 days since I placed an order and never received anything. Apparently, there was a mistake on my address, but nothing was wrong with it.
Been advised that they will get in contact with MRW, but after three different calls and three enquiries on a email, still don't know where the parcel is. Decided to cancel the order, but it's impossible to get any answer neither by phone or mail.
If all goes good, might be a decent supplier. However, if you a single issue, will struggle to sort it out.
Nuria Tricas★☆☆☆☆
So far very bad experience. The good should have arrived 5 days ago, PO placed 20th of jan. When I ask about the status of the order no one is replying. I can understand some delay but not about complete silence. I Doubt I place another order again and most probably I will cancel this one.

Fantastic professionals! The best pharmacy in Cartagena. They have everything (and if they don't, they'll get it for you incredibly fast). They also have a very wide and excellent range of cosmetics. As for their staff, Javier and Manu are delightful, as are Raquel, Carolina, and the rest of the employees. A perfect TEN!

I've had a very good experience at this pharmacy, for the second time. The service was clear, friendly, and professional, which is quite an achievement these days. They explained with complete transparency that there could be shortages or supply difficulties due to the Easter holidays, and that my doctor's recent prescription was more likely to be out of stock.
The first time, over a year ago, they played a vital role, literally: after my father called from Jaca, they reserved Kreon for us during a shortage, and thanks to them, I was able to get it for my mother when she hadn't been taking it for several days. It's wonderful to find professionals like them.
Jose Alejandro Gea Moreno★☆☆☆☆
A terrible experience.
I'm not much of a talker, so I'll quote her verbatim:
"Good afternoon, I'm taking Frenadol decongestant capsules, but I have a terrible, dry cough. Can I alternate it with something?"
The saleswoman (I don't want to call her a pharmacist) gave me a box of the Frenadol I was using up and some syrup (NovagTuss) and prescribed: 1 Frenadol tablet every six hours and 10ml of the syrup, also every six hours.
Result: dizziness, palpitations, and vomiting due to a dextromethorphan overdose.
As a salesperson, she was excellent; she pocketed €25 for both items.
And I still have a terrible cough.

Excellent service, very polite, they trust you. They explain things clearly. I'll definitely be back.

Thank you Raquel, Manu, Carol, Aroa...

Between the staff and the tubular duct system, you're attended to before you even enter. You can also pick up orders. They have a huge selection of items. It's a large store, and because they have so much, you have to be careful not to trip over something. I don't mind traveling a few kilometers to pick up my orders; it saves you time and makes things easier. The staff is young and dynamic.

A terrible experience. I went to get medication that the doctor told me was available without a prescription and that all pharmacies in Cartagena sell without one, but the girl (the one with the veil) refused to give it to me. She was incredibly rude, disrespectful to customers, and acted like she was the boss, making fun of people, even though she knew we were there because we were sick, not for fun. She was a total disgrace. I will never return because of her; she's not fit to work with the public. I don't know how such a well-known pharmacy allows people like this to work there; all they do is scare away customers.
Alvaro Pérez Rivera★☆☆☆☆
My son takes a prescribed hydrolyzed milk monthly, which costs over €300. I usually order it from there, but neither last month nor this month have they answered the phone when I've called to place an order. I've called about 10 times today without success. Without this service, I'll have to order it from another pharmacy. I hope they take this service seriously soon.

At 10:45 PM, I was about to enter through the door as a customer was leaving when he flatly refused me entry, pointing outside. He then served me through the window. The first thing he said was "Good evening," but his manners speak for themselves.
It's sad that you have staff with that attitude… but from what I've read in the comments, I'm neither the first nor the last person to experience this.

The way they treat customers is unacceptable. They have absolutely no ethics or empathy. They're supposed to be professionals dedicated to helping customers, not humiliating them or treating them with contempt. The way they treated customers this morning was something I've never experienced before; it was horrible. I recommend that this man reconsider his profession.

I usually go there fairly often, but after today's experience, I won't be back. I went to pick up my medication, and the girl treated me quite badly when I told her I wanted to see if the cholesterol pills were the ones the doctor had changed.

This is my first time at this pharmacy. It's a very good store. The service and quality are top-notch. I like it a lot and will recommend it to my friends for a physical exam.

The lab is a disgrace.
I went there this morning to get blood work done. A young woman scheduled me for 7:30 a.m., which is when they open because they didn't have any other appointments. I went, only to be told by the rude man that I couldn't have it done. He made comments like, "What you have to put up with early in the morning!" and "Well, without blood work, there's no interruption." Excuse me? I'm sorry to tell you that I called the clinic and they treated me perfectly, unlike you. If you go through life like this, all you're going to get are reviews like this and much worse responses than the ones you give. I hope I never have to deal with you again because you're awful.

I'm delighted with this pharmacy. They have everything. I was looking for a medication I couldn't find anywhere else, and they had it here. Very friendly staff.

They treated me with complete indifference and reluctance. They refused to sell me the medications on my prescription, claiming one didn't exist (which is false, as another pharmacy sold it to me without any problem) and they didn't even mention the other one, meaning they refused to sell it to me either. Terrible.

Thank you so much for your kindness; I'm very grateful. It's wonderful to find people with such genuine dedication and care for others.
ANTONIO PÉREZ★☆☆☆☆
Just today I had to endure the lack of empathy, reflexes, and professionalism of the clerk at this pharmacy. Social skills should be a mandatory subject in school, as so many people lack them, including this individual. He's just a salesman behind a counter. I understand that I still have a few days to wait before I can get my medication, although I wasn't aware of that.
First, very rudely and in a very unpleasant tone, he said that the person on the ID wasn't the one who came to buy the medication. This is new, as my spouse has always had no problem going to other pharmacies with my ID. I don't usually go because I have reduced mobility, although this "gentleman" insisted that the patient has to go in person with their ID. My question is, what does this clerk do in cases of quadriplegic, bedridden, cancer patients, etc.? Does he tell them the same thing he told me, that I haven't done anything illegal and that my disability is justified? I would be ashamed to act that way, behaving with such rudeness, because making the patient come in person reflects very poorly on that salesperson, who, it seems to me, is just trying to cause trouble. However, based on what he said, he would be responsible for anything that might happen to the patient, since he's already been singled out because, according to him, the patient has to come in person. Let's keep watching to see how far he sinks. As far as I'm concerned, Alameda 33 is now on my list of places where I'm not welcome. Selling anything is acceptable to this clerk, and making unpleasant remarks is something he feels entitled to do, even though my spouse treated me politely, only to receive ineptitude and incompetence in return. I should mention that I'm a member of MUFACE, meaning I'm "on file" for any action deemed illegal. I have nothing to fear from my end.
Ángeles Solano Rodríguez★★★★★
I really like this pharmacy; they're very friendly, they do everything they can to help you out in a pinch, and always with a smile. Thank you.

Tips for Using Pharmacies in Cartagena
Understanding the local nuances of the Spanish pharmaceutical system will make your visit much smoother, whether you are a local or a visitor. While the staff in central Cartagena often speak some English due to the tourist influx, knowing the protocols and expectations ensures you receive the best possible care without delays or confusion.
- Look for the Green Cross: Every legitimate pharmacy in Spain displays a prominent illuminated green cross, often animated or flashing. If you are in a side street and cannot find a sign, look for the word "Farmacia" on the storefront. Do not confuse pharmacies with "Parafarmacias," which sell only non-medicinal health and beauty products.
- Ask for Generic Medications: Spanish pharmacists frequently offer generic brands (genéricos) which contain the exact same active ingredients as name-brand drugs but cost significantly less. If you are paying out of pocket as a tourist, always ask if a cheaper generic alternative is available for your prescription or recommended treatment.
- Know the Siesta and Late Hours: While many businesses in Cartagena close for the afternoon siesta, most central pharmacies remain open during lunch hours. However, if you need medication late at night, look for the "Farmacia de Guardia" (duty pharmacy). Every pharmacy door posts a sign listing the nearest location that is open 24 hours or during holidays.
- Bring Your EHIC or Insurance Details: If you are an EU citizen, carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access state healthcare and prescriptions at the same cost as Spanish citizens. Non-EU travelers should keep their travel insurance details handy, as you may need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement later.
- Describe Symptoms Clearly: Unlike in some countries where you simply grab a box off a shelf, many stronger painkillers or antihistamines are kept behind the counter. Approach the pharmacist and describe your symptoms clearly; they are legally trained to assess whether you need a standard medication or should visit a nearby medical centre.
- Check for Specialized Services: If you are traveling with an infant or have specific health needs, look for pharmacies that advertise "Análisis" (testing) or "Ortopedia" (orthopedics). Some central locations have private consultation rooms where you can discuss sensitive issues or receive vaccinations before traveling.
Taking a few moments to locate a pharmacy before an emergency arises is a wise strategy when exploring Cartagena. The city centre is designed for walking, and the density of pharmacies means you are always close to professional help. Whether you need a simple pack of plasters for blisters caused by the cobblestones or urgent assistance, the pharmacists here are well-equipped to support your health.
By utilizing the local knowledge shared above, you can navigate the health landscape of Cartagena with confidence. The combination of accessible locations, professional staff, and strict regulatory standards ensures that your health needs are handled safely and efficiently while you enjoy everything this historic port city has to offer.
