12 Best Entertainment Venues in Cartagena

As the sun dips below the historic ramparts and the Caribbean breeze cools the cobblestone streets, Cartagena transforms. This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is not just a museum of colonial architecture; it is a vibrant, breathing metropolis where the night pulses with salsa, champeta, and electronic beats. The city’s unique blend of old-world charm and modern Colombian energy makes it one of the most dynamic entertainment destinations in South America.

Finding the perfect spot to spend your evening can be overwhelming, given the sheer density of options tucked away in the historic center, Getsemaní, and Bocagrande. Whether you are looking for a high-energy nightclub that stays open until sunrise or a sophisticated rooftop bar with panoramic views, Cartagena has a distinct rhythm for every type of traveler. The key is knowing where to look, as the best venues are often hidden behind unassuming colonial facades.

The local entertainment culture is deeply rooted in music and dance. Unlike many global cities where the focus is solely on drinking, Cartagena’s venues prioritize the experience of movement and sound. You will find that the line between a "bar" and a "dance floor" is often blurred, with spontaneous dancing breaking out even in the most upscale lounges.

For the discerning visitor, safety and quality are paramount. The most reputable venues in the city offer not only world-class entertainment but also high standards of service, security, and mixology. These are places where you can comfortably enjoy the local culture without the stress of navigating less tourist-friendly areas late at night.

This guide focuses on the premier entertainment venues that consistently deliver exceptional experiences. From the bohemian streets of Getsemaní, where street art meets live salsa, to the elegant terraces overlooking the clock tower, we have curated a list that captures the true essence of Cartagena’s nightlife. Each location offers a distinct atmosphere, catering to different moods and musical preferences.

Understanding the geography of entertainment is crucial. The Historic Center (Centro Histórico) tends to attract a more upscale, international crowd, often featuring electronic music and chic decor. In contrast, Getsemaní offers a more authentic, local vibe with live bands and open-air dancing. Bocagrande, the modern strip, provides casino culture and ocean-view lounges.

Below, we have compiled a definitive list of the best venues that define Cartagena’s reputation as a party capital. These are the places that locals recommend to their friends and that tourists rave about long after their tan has faded.

Every time we visit we always have a great time. It is a well set out Auditorium and each seat seems to have a good view. We saw "Brothers in Band" a Dire Straits tribute band and throughly enjoyed it. Importantly not only was the band great, so vitally was the sound quality. Some great offers and concessions discounts available too.
Ben Mulvey★☆☆☆☆
Perhaps the worst designed building I have ever been to with organisation skills to match. A beautiful opera ruined by poor acoustics, terrible lighting, hundreds of stairs and a 15 minute interval that meant you had no time to do anything. And, inside it is ugly, cold, and full of huge empty spaces. The shows are fabulous....just watch them somewhere else.
Ahmed Almarzougi★★★★★
Wonderful building design and great location. The restaurant Eszencia has nice view and very delicious and high quality food
Elizabeth Watkins★★★★☆
Great Beatles tribute. Auditorium excellent, good sound production. Seating comfortable. Toilets very dark and not enough of them. None on the upper floors.
Mandy McKitrick★★★★★
Beautiful modern theatre. Plenty of leg room when seated. The show we saw was amazing Saturday Night Disco 54. 3hrs of fantastic entertainment.

Delicious food, made with love; you can really taste the quality. The place is wonderful because it allows you to chat, have lunch or dinner in peace, and you can even enjoy a few drinks afterward. Belén and her colleagues are fantastic; they provide excellent service and are very attentive. I'm vegetarian, and they always try to offer options so everyone can eat. The venue is also wonderful because it's perfect for book presentations, workshops, talks, and more, as it's set up for that purpose. Thank you, ladies, for your hard work and for running the business so well! 🙂
MK ISABEL GUERRERO★★★★★
Exquisite cuisine, especially the cheeses. Spectacular! Belén is delightful, as is the venue. If you're looking for a spacious and technologically advanced place for business and leisure meetings, this is it.

We visited Comodoro Rivadavia a couple of weeks ago, saw they were offering a "Dinner of the Senses," and decided to go. We really enjoyed it; the dishes were unique and surprising. The service was very attentive, drinks were always available, and the food came out quickly, considering everything was freshly prepared. It's great to see someone organizing something different in our city. We'll definitely be back.
ALBA 3m★★★★★
We went for a beer and ended up having dinner, since we found out they had a tapas menu. The menu is simple but good. The truffle pizza is amazing, definitely recommended. The waitresses were very friendly, attentive, and elegant.
alex alex★☆☆☆☆
We went to the Dinner of the Senses and left completely disappointed. For 40 euros, we got a paper tablecloth and some plastic tableware—not good. The food was slow, meager, and very basic. It was a strange experience: blindfolded to have different sensations, but people were talking nonstop, the music and food had no coherent theme, it was incomprehensible, and there was very little information about the commotion. The wine pairing, with only one white and one red, was insufficient. It's a case of trying too hard and failing; they need to rethink their approach. Now I understand why you have to pay before dinner; you're going to leave dissatisfied and with a negative feeling of being ripped off. Definitely not going back.

Best Rock Bar in Cartagena, wide selection of beers and Drinks. Nicely decorated as in 80s Rock decade style. Friendly staff and fair prices. Good place to hang out with Friends or by yourself. If you like Rock music that's the place to go.

Great building, you can listen to the audio guide in English, Spanish, French and Italian if you just scan the code when you buy the ticket. The entrance fee is 5 euro, but definitely worth it. The casino itself is not big, but you would need around 45 minutes to properly see all the rooms. There is also a beautiful restaurant/Cafe inside. Worth a visit!.
Don Foster★★★★★
Amazing building, lots of history and some great restoration. Well worth a visit.
Sergey★☆☆☆☆
After paying a visit to the beautiful casino in Murcia, we saw on Google maps casino in Cartagena and wanted to see it as well. The building on the main shopping street was inviting with large posters explaining opening hours etc and only a small paper in the least visible place was saying it is member-only. Of course, amongst all these posters we didn’t notice that small paper, entered and were literally kicked out 😁 Gents, if you are not capable to properly arrange information, at least have some better manners or do some less qualified job because you definitely don’t manage it well now.
Kath Rowbotham★★★★★
We did a guided tour. It is such an interesting building. The tour was with in Spanish but the guide ensured we were included and provided asise in English to help us.
Daniel “Dan” Mawson★★☆☆☆
Pretty building. Got as far as front desk. Think the old lady on reception thought I was looking to gamble the trip money. It is an active casino.

This pub's atmosphere is very pleasant. It's unfortunate that we don't see too many people when we visit this pub. If you plan on visiting this pub, make sure to do so on Saturday

good music, pleasant staff. drinks pricier than other bars.

We felt best described as a hipster bar. We had a very helpful and keen to please young lady who served us. A real music bar with music videos playing continuously. Wine €3 a glass. Infusion €1 and a small beer €2.

We had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the Teatro Romano de Cartagena. The site itself is incredibly well-preserved and truly transports you back in time. Seeing the ancient theater and its surroundings was the highlight of our trip. We were pleasantly surprised by how smoothly everything went, with no wait to get in, making for a very relaxed visit. Given our experience, I wouldn't stress about purchasing tickets ahead of time, though it's always good to check for any special events that might be happening. Highly recommend a visit!
Nick Clarke★★★★★
There is a very interesting museum describing the history and the restoration project, then you go through into the theatre itself which you can investigate including climbing the steps and standing on the stage.
Phil Hyde★★★★★
Absolutely amazing, well worth a visit, the audio tour is very informative, but to stand in a building that's 2000 years old is mind boggling. It's important to note that you need to access the amphitheatre via the museum on Plaza Ayuntimiento, as Google maps takes you to the exit.
Don MacAuslan★★★★☆
A must see while visiting Cartagena Spain. Easy walk from cruise terminal. Start in the sqare and pedestrianised area of the main street. Turn right and walk right to the top for great views.
Gary Birkett★★★★★
Very interesting visit. The staff were very kind. The price was incredible value. Only €7 per adult And the displays were very informative. Me and my family really enjoyed the theatre and the museum

Kary Barceló★★★☆☆
I went to listen to the choirs on the feast of Saint Cecilia. Too many choirs, and some of them quite lackluster. The Cartagonova choir gave a superb performance.
Jorge Paredes★★★★★
Despite their age, the facilities are still very well maintained, the acoustics are good, and I haven't yet found a seat from which I couldn't see the stage well.
Noelia Caballero★★★★★
As always, going to the Teatro Circo is like stepping into a magical world. The staff is always friendly and approachable, always ready to help with chairs, digital tickets, noisy children... And always with a smile. It's our beloved theater, now enjoyed with my family, and it's my favorite thing to do.

El Abanico is a Cartagena landmark, and thanks to La Ogra que Todo Lo Logra (The Ogre Who Achieves Everything), it remains a haven for the LGBTQIA+ community and the city's only LGBTQIA+ venue. It's a place to enjoy our LGBTQIA+ culture, offering all kinds of entertainment, great music, and drinks. The friendliness of Pablo and the rest of the bartenders and staff makes El Abanico a great choice to start and end a night out, where La Ogra awaits us and offers us a free shot.

It's a wonderful place where everyone can enjoy great drinks and fun. With live music, drag, and improv, it's a real gem for a city like Cartagena, and the service from the waiters is impeccable.
A. Ruiz★★★★☆
I've been 2 or 3 times and I still haven't seen the place very crowded... obviously they're not responsible for people not opening up... in any case, it's a place to have a few drinks in a totally uninhibited way.

Visited during 3 King's Procession. Well received and looked after by staff. Very convenient to pop in and out to see the Procession. Drinks were normal price and it was great to get German and Belgian beer especially Duval.

Visited Cartagena for the Three Kings parade, but the highlight of our day was finding this fantastic bar! Decor is really cool and the atmosphere is great. Drinks are also cheaper than you might expect, in a more 'upmarket' bar, such as this and the staff were really nice and polite. Will definitely be returning, hopefully when they have some live entertainment performing.

Classy Bar with good service. Definitely go back

Essential Tips for Enjoying Cartagena’s Nightlife

Navigating the nightlife in Cartagena requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you have the best possible experience. The city operates on a different clock than most of the world; dinner is late, and the party often starts after midnight. Here is a brief guide to help you blend in, stay safe, and maximize your enjoyment while exploring the city’s vibrant entertainment scene.

Dress to Impress
While Cartagena is a tropical destination, the dress code at the city’s top venues is surprisingly strict. Men should avoid wearing flip-flops, tank tops, or athletic shorts, as many upscale bars and clubs in the Historic Center will deny entry. For women, elegant summer dresses or stylish evening wear are the norm. Looking sharp not only guarantees entry but also enhances the overall experience of the luxurious surroundings.

Start Late and Pace Yourself
The heat and humidity of the Caribbean mean that the night starts much later than in Europe or North America. Arriving at a club before 11:00 PM often means you will be alone on the dance floor. The peak hours for entertainment are between 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM. To last the night, pace your drinking and stay hydrated with water between cocktails.

Master the Art of the Cover Charge
Many high-end venues in Cartagena operate with a "cover charge" system, which is often redeemable for drinks at the bar. This is standard practice and not a scam. It is wise to carry some cash (Colombian Pesos) for these entry fees, even if the bar inside accepts credit cards, as the door often operates on a cash basis.

Learn Basic Salsa or Champeta
While you don’t need to be a professional dancer, knowing a few basic steps will significantly enhance your night. Locals are incredibly friendly and often willing to teach tourists how to dance. However, showing a willingness to participate in the music culture—rather than just standing on the sidelines—will earn you respect and often leads to a much more immersive and fun experience.

Utilize Taxis and Rideshares at Night
Even if your hotel is close by, the narrow, dark streets of the Old City can be disorienting at night. It is highly recommended to use official taxis or rideshare apps like Uber or Cabify when moving between venues after dark. This ensures you arrive safely and avoids the hassle of navigating poorly lit areas, allowing you to focus entirely on the entertainment.

As the night winds down and the first hints of dawn appear over the Caribbean Sea, you will understand why Cartagena is considered the crown jewel of Colombia’s coast. The city offers a sensory overload that is hard to match—where the clinking of glasses mixes with the deep resonance of live drums and the laughter of new friends.

Whether you spent your evening sipping a vintage rum on a breezy rooftop or dancing until your feet hurt in a sweaty, music-filled courtyard, the memories made here are unique. Cartagena’s entertainment scene is not just about the places; it is about the feeling of being alive in a city that refuses to sleep, inviting you to return again and again.
