12 Pharmacies in Pamplona City Centre

Finding a reliable pharmacy in the heart of Pamplona is often a task that comes with a sense of urgency. Whether you are a local resident managing a chronic condition or a visitor navigating the cobbled streets during San Fermín, you need clear, actionable information. The city centre is densely packed with historic landmarks and winding pedestrian zones, which can make locating essential services feel overwhelming if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Understanding the local pharmacy system in Spain is the first step to a stress-free experience. Pharmacies here are highly regulated, ensuring that the medication and advice you receive meet strict safety standards. You can identify them easily by looking for a green cross sign, which is often illuminated or displayed prominently on the storefront. Inside, you will find licensed professionals who are trained to offer medical guidance without the need for a hospital visit.

The location of these pharmacies is specifically designed to serve the high foot traffic of the Casco Antiguo (Old Town) and the Ensanche districts. Because the centre is largely pedestrianized, most of these locations are easily walkable from major landmarks like the Plaza del Castillo or the Cathedral. This accessibility ensures that you are never more than a few minutes away from professional health advice, even if you are staying in a central apartment or hotel.

One of the most valuable aspects of Spanish pharmacies is the "Farmacia de Guardia" (duty pharmacy) system. While standard operating hours are typically from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, not all pharmacies close at night. A rotating schedule ensures that at least one pharmacy in the city remains open 24 hours a day to handle late-night emergencies or urgent prescription needs.

When visiting a pharmacy in the city centre, language barriers are rarely an issue. Due to the international nature of Pamplona, especially during the running of the bulls, many pharmacists speak English or French. They can help you distinguish between a branded medication and a generic equivalent, often saving you money while providing the exact same therapeutic effect.

For tourists, it is important to note that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is accepted in Spain. However, if you are traveling from outside the EU, you will likely need to pay out of pocket for over-the-counter items and claim prescription costs through your travel insurance later. Keeping your passport and insurance details handy can expedite this process.

Below is a curated list of centrally located pharmacies that are known for their professional service and convenient locations. Whether you need a specific prescription filled or simply require sunscreen and hydration salts after a long day of exploring, these establishments are equipped to help.

While walking el camino de Santiago, we were so very lucky to choose Farmacia Central to purchase some compede for a suffering toe. Danny (Boy) and Irune were super friendly and professional. Danny immediately spoke to us in English (my Spanish clearly needs work), quickly recommended the product we needed, and then dressed the poor wee toe himself. Amazing service! He also recommended an alternate route for the Camino which we will certainly check out. We entered the store as customers and left having made new friends. Highly recommended.

Last friday we were amazed by the services povided by Farmacia Central. The place is pet friendly, special thanks to Daniel - he was very welcoming to my dog and even gave him a treat (as this pharmacy also have pet products). Note that you can also make an order via WhatsApp (photo below) and pick it up in the pharmacy or in the lockers next to pharmacy - seems nice. Wish everyone to stay healthy and highly recmmend to use this pharmacy.

Though I went there to buy a very basic medicine, I still like the location, ambiance, professionalism of the staff and well maintained token system which helps during crowded situations. Overall my experience was very nice and smooth and I would definitely prefer to visit in future if needed.

They charge €10 for something that the rest of the pharmacies charge €7-8!
Mikel Rodriguez★★★★★
It's a huge 24-hour pharmacy that's always packed. Being so big, it almost always has everything you need. They recently added a herbal and homeopathic section. I don't really like the system of having checkouts in various parts of the pharmacy, because when it's your turn, you don't know if you're supposed to go to the large central checkout or the smaller ones on the sides. They should organize the queues better, as they block access and prevent you from seeing the products on the shelves.
Marcela Moncada Bautista★☆☆☆☆
I had a terrible experience. They're desperate to sell, no matter what. I went in for cough syrup and told the man who served me that I needed one that wasn't natural because I'd finished a honey syrup and it hadn't worked. He brought me a 100% natural syrup (my mistake for not noticing), but he also tried to sell me some cypress drops to add to the syrup (the syrup he was selling me already had cypress in it, my second mistake for not noticing). Then he tried to sell me some vitamins I hadn't asked for, telling me that if I wanted to get better I had to take them or I'd have to take antibiotics, as if the vitamins would cure any possible infection. I didn't buy the vitamins (they cost almost €20), but I did buy the essential oil after he insisted, even though it was clear I didn't need it because the syrup already contained it.
Helena Pellejero★★★★★
Thank you, Alejandra! I arrived last Saturday to pick up an antihistamine. Not only were they attentive and had it ready immediately, but a pharmacist specializing in skin care also helped me and gave me advice on how to take care of myself and get through the process more easily! It wasn't just about picking up the medication; it was about the service and feeling so understood when I was feeling unwell. I'll definitely be back!

My wife and were hiking the Camino de Santiago when she developed a sore throat and a dry cough. The ladies at this pharmacy did an outstanding job caring for her and recommended the medication she needed for relief. They were both kind enough to speak English which made the communication much easier. Highly recommend. Bien Camino!
Christian Andras★☆☆☆☆
Entered the pharmacy to ask for some simple medication. Not 3 seconds after entering, we where scolded by an elderly gentleman that we didn’t have face mask (at this time the law in Spain mandates masks in public transport/pharmacies). Although we actually had masks in our backpack, I was taken aback by the very rude and almost violent way to be addressed, in spite of my polite greeting in castillano. Really guys, you can do better in terms of customer relation. Or remember the “7 years from home”. Speak nicely to people. And one business suggestion: since nobody seems to have masks - consider buying the chepest masks available and place them at the entrance, so customers can obey the law and put masks on when entering…
Caïna Verrin★★★★★
Very helpful and knew exactly what I wanted. Perfect English and also happy if you want to try your Spanish. Great place to pop into if you’re in the Camino and need help. Small, but well stocked

I have nothing but praise for the people who run this pharmacy. Their service, attention to detail, dedication, good prices, and commitment to ensuring everyone has access to top-quality products at the best prices are outstanding. Ordering online is easy and convenient. They also offer several ways to contact them to resolve any questions or issues that may arise. Every order I've placed so far has arrived at my home the day after I ordered it. With each order, they always include thoughtful touches for both adults and children, making sure no one is left without a gift during special occasions. Everything arrives in perfect condition, well-packaged and sealed. I wholeheartedly recommend this pharmacy and the people behind this wonderful project! They go beyond being just local businesses; they become true friends who are always there to help!

This pharmacy is fantastic! I'm delighted with the service from the staff, especially Gloria, who takes care of every little detail for her customers. It was a great find for me, and I'm very happy with the orders I've placed so far. In my case, they required delivery, and I received them at home within 24 hours. Highly, highly recommended 🙂

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it's been to meet professionals and people truly committed to their work of caring for others. Gloria and her entire team are wonderful people, incredibly generous with their time and very patient with customers, providing personalized advice tailored to each individual's needs. Their prices are very competitive compared to other pharmacies. The distance between Seville and Pamplona has never been an obstacle to delivering all orders within 24 hours. From here, I want to publicly express my gratitude to Gloria and her entire team, and I encourage those customers who haven't yet shopped at this pharmacy to do so without hesitation: HONESTY, SERVICE, and PRICE. Thank you, Gloria 🙏
Cristina Cañizares★★★★★
I've placed several orders and everything has been great. You can contact them in various ways, and they always provide excellent service, answering all your questions. The face masks are properly certified, and the cosmetic products from lesser-known brands are very good. My order arrived correctly and on time.
Silvia S. M.★★★★★
Spectacular, in a word. I stumbled across your site while searching for quality face masks, and you've won me over with your other products as well. For quality, competitive pricing, and fast shipping, you get a 10 out of 10. And if we add the fantastic packaging and a lovely little extra gift, which is much appreciated, then you deserve top marks. Congratulations on your work from a loyal customer.

As always, this is my favorite place to shop for my skin. I have terribly sensitive skin, and this place has always been great for me. I don't know about the prices, I suppose they're within the normal range, but every time I go, they give me samples, a little gift, and offers that I usually take advantage of. They managed to find the cream I desperately needed, the only one that has worked wonders for me: the barrier function cream by Gema Herrera. They also have some products from the Galenic brand, so everything is wonderful! Excellent service.

Tips for Using Pharmacies in Pamplona

Navigating healthcare in a foreign country can be daunting, but a little preparation goes a long way. The following tips are designed to help you interact with local pharmacies efficiently, ensuring you get the right product at the right time without unnecessary delays or confusion.

  1. Know the Duty Pharmacy Schedule: Do not wait until midnight to start searching for an open store. Check the local newspaper, the window of any closed pharmacy, or the official Navarra health app to find the current "Farmacia de Guardia" location.
  2. Bring Your Prescription and Box: If you need a refill, always bring the original medication box or a digital photo of your prescription. Spanish pharmacists are meticulous about dosages and will need to verify the exact milligram strength before dispensing.
  3. Ask for the Generic (Genérico): Brand names differ between countries. If you are looking for a specific drug, ask for the active ingredient or the "genérico." This is often significantly cheaper and ensures you are getting the correct chemical compound.
  4. Separate Acute Needs from Chronic Care: For minor ailments like blisters, sunburn, or colds, trust the pharmacist’s recommendation. They are highly trained to treat minor conditions on the spot, saving you a trip to a crowded urgent care clinic.
  5. Check for the Green Cross Glow: Most modern pharmacies in Pamplona use a digital screen or a bright green cross. If the cross is lit, the pharmacy is open. If it is off, even if the door looks slightly ajar, they are likely closed for the afternoon siesta.

Understanding these nuances allows you to utilize Pamplona’s healthcare system like a local. The pharmacists in this city are known for their patience and thoroughness, often going above and beyond to explain side effects or interactions in simple terms. Do not hesitate to ask questions; your safety and understanding are their primary goals.

As you continue your journey through the historic streets, take comfort in knowing that professional medical help is always within reach. The network of pharmacies in the city centre is robust, reliable, and ready to serve both the local community and the thousands of visitors who pass through each year.
