12 Best Live Music Venues in San Sebastián

San Sebastián, or Donostia as it is known locally, is a city that moves to its own rhythm. While the world rightly obsesses over its Michelin-starred restaurants and the famed pintxos bars of the Old Town, there is a deeper, more electric pulse that runs through the city after dark. Beyond the clinking of glasses and the sizzle of grills lies a vibrant ecosystem of live music that captures the soul of the Basque Country.

For the traveling music lover, this coastal paradise offers an incredibly diverse sonic landscape. From the raw, rebellious energy of underground punk rock to the sophisticated acoustics of classical auditoriums, the city’s venues are as varied as its culinary scene. You don’t need to be a local to find the heart of the action; you just need to know where to look.

Navigating the scene here is an experience in itself. You might find yourself in a converted warehouse by the train tracks, sweating to a local hardcore band, only to walk ten minutes and sit in a velvet seat listening to a world-class jazz quartet. The proximity of these contrasting worlds is what makes the music culture in San Sebastián so uniquely compelling.

The geography of the city dictates the vibe of the venues. The narrow, cobblestone streets of the Parte Vieja (Old Town) hide intimate bars where the music spills out onto the street, while the sprawling districts of Egia and Gros host larger, edgier spaces that attract international touring acts. The sea air seems to inject a certain melancholy and beauty into the melodies produced here.

Understanding the local music scene requires an appreciation for the Basque language, Euskera. While many bands sing in Spanish or English, the revival of Basque culture has produced a powerful "Rock Radikal Vasco" legacy. This movement is not just a genre; it is a statement of identity, and you will feel its reverberations in many of the city’s most storied venues.

Whether you are planning a dedicated music pilgrimage or simply want to end a day of beach-hopping with some great tunes, this guide is your backstage pass. We have curated a list that spans the spectrum, ensuring that no matter your taste—be it jazz, indie, techno, or folk—you will find a stage that feels like home.

Below, we explore the best spaces where the city’s sound comes alive. These are the rooms where memories are made, where the acoustics are tested, and where the Basque spirit is loudest.

Cool bar in the rather non touristy area of San Sebastián. Very cool vibe and fair prices. They play good movies and have a corner where they run movies as well.
Anna Nelson★★★★★
Lots of character in the vibe and lots of characters in the clientele
Graham Styles★★★★★
Great bar for some late night drinking and the owner will take requests for music you would like to hear.

A bar as an example for other bars. Big, rough, full of people, fast service, loud music and even louder voices, a broken piano, no cue for the toilets, a doorman and a massive headache the next day. As beautiful as its name

Brilliant atmosphere and exactly what a jazz cellar should feel like. Good cocktails, not overpriced — noticeably cheaper than equivalent venues in cities like Frankfurt. We caught a blues evening this time, local band, and the mood was spot on. Intimate basement setting that actually works. One of the highlights of San Sebastián.
Dirk★★★★★
THE place for live music in San Sebastian. If you are looking for a jam and cant find any go here and talk to the artist during the break if you can join them for a song or two. It can get full so come early for good seating close to the stage.
Tim Carryer★★★★★
Outstanding music. Best live jazz I’ve heard in a long time. Went to two shows on different nights. 5 Euros cover charge is ridiculously cheap. Cocktails were excellent. Intimate setting. Local music school draws and feeds professional talent. Go!
Anni★★★★★
Super great selection of drinks, beautiful ambience, and friendly staff. They can make changes to customize cocktails from the menu. The variety of seating is also great.
Lucile De la fuente★★★★★
We had a marvelous time there last night so i couldn'trecommand it enough. The live music was hypnotizing with a very intimate ambiance, and the staff lovely as well. The barman made me try drinks beforehand when I hesitated and served amazing huge cocktails. I even got to try a delicious Japanese umeshuu ! Thank you for that amazing moment !

Very friendly Luca serving good drinks. If you are looking to join a Thursday jam make sure to check Instagram and call the place before going. If there is no jam head over to Altxerri jazz club around the corner and ask the artists during the break if you can join them for a song.

Thank God no piano! Almost didn't go because of that 😆. Super craft cocktails great view and kind staff. I do recommend! The music was for sure more disco which was great as we were just getting ready on our night on the town. They did tell my hubby they stay open pretty late.

DO NOT GO THERE! They tried to charge me 7€ for a beer. And when I asked if the price is correct (which it isn’t) they threw me out. Keep your beer…
Adriana Freixa★★★★★
Best gin tonics and mojitos we've ever had. Good music, great drinks selection, friendly staff and a very cool place to have some drinks. Definitely recommended!
Da Mistanista (Manista)★★★★★
Simply a fun, no nonsense bar with a club vibe and superb music choices over the nice quality sound system. A host of classic and a few unique mixed drinks on a menu in English plus s full bar and local favorite beer on tap. Young, energetic crowd early on the weeknight we went, later on it changed to a more diverse one in age. Bartenders were friendly and welcoming even though we were travelers and we really enjoyed chatting with them. Gendry behind the bar is the best! He made sure our visit was enjoyable, picked the best musical selections, and tends a very fun bar. Located right off the river and highly recommend. Open till 5am! It gets an overflow crowd when other bars in the area close for the night. Cheers!

Awesome vibe, good selection of artisan beer. The sound is clear, very enjoyable crowd. The atmosphere is unique and special. If you have a chance come and check this out. Make sure to see who is playing that night. I was here when M.O.TO played and I love every bit of it.

I’ve been clubbing everywhere in the world and this place is one the worst I’ve ever been too. The security is FASCIST, they do not allow people back in without ANY EXPLANATION and one of them is been incredibly aggressive to me with no reason at all, he almost put his hands on me and I was just talking politely. I paid my entrance, I was a regular customer and that’s how they treated me. Avoid this place, I will also send a mail to Resident Advisor to warn them not to publicise the events of such a terrible place. Clubbing needs safe places around the globe with good vibes, not this.

Small, cozy venue. Fun ambiance, welcoming and kind staff. Definitely recommend 😊

Great place to visit, great ambiance.

This is pretty much the only spot in Donostia that has live music and alternative programming. Definitely my favorite place in the city, my only critique is that they can use more seating.

It is unofficially known as Cabarceno, because it is like a zoo of all kind of species, including the basque police (ertzaintza, just a coté). But the owners are nice and the prices are just... So for over 35 people striving for a dance with 80's it is just fine... And who knows? Maybe spanish speaking basque police is your type!

This is a hidden gem!! Make sure you look for the tiny “bar” sign and arrow, we almost missed it!! After hiking Urgall it felt like we stumbled in to one of the best kept secrets, perfect for a drink after hiking! We didn’t try the food but drinks were fabulous and the waitstaff was very kind.
Law_28★★★☆☆
The view is breathtaking, it’s self service but the drinks are ok. We stopped on our trek here to refresh ourselves before continuing. Overall good for a short stop before moving on. Wouldn’t call it a must visit.
Marcel Cybon★★★★★
Lovely. We had an amazing morning walk on the hill overlooking the town and the bays and took a great break in this stunning bar. Cozy vibes, here you could sit all day and just stare into the blue, listen to great music and have a yummy cold drink.
Kay Bee★★★★★
It was a bit of a cloudy day so we decided to hike to Mount Urgull. The grassy vista point led is to this fortuitous discovery. The bar was just being set up so we went to the top and hit the bar on our way back down. It was our reward. It was a great way to rest and leisurely admire the scenery. There is a bathroom nearby too which was pleasantly clean though it didn’t have soap. Highly recommend!
Nishanth★★★★★
San Seb’s true gem of a place. The drinks were amazing and affordable too. The views from this place is amazing. I’d recommend to drop by for sunset although it may be hard to get a great seat. Just note that cleanliness might be a small issue but the view and drinks makes the visit worth it.

The bartenders are so rude, they held our bags and phones and did not give it to us for no reason, even when we asked very nicely. Then they talk to us like we are bad people for taking our things back. Big egos and rude for no reason, don’t come here you will only argue and it will ruin your night. Horrible. I don’t know how they have this rating, probably faking reviews, don’t be fooled. Don’t bother to respond to my review like you did with the rest, you treated us like garbage just because we are tourists. Don’t forget we keep you alive 😉🤣

I was in San Sebastián for a few nights. Each bar I went in to was very similar. Inexpensive beer and wine. Rushing to get everyone in and out. Small and loud. Then I accidentally found myself in Drinks Soul and Spirit. The owner is INCREDIBLE. He was kind, knowledgeable, and a cocktail ARTIST. I ended up having multiple cocktails here before and after dinner. An absolute gem of a place. Could not recommend it more.

I’ve been to a lot of bars in my life, and oh mamma, this was the best experience ever! From the very first sip of the Spicy Mango Margarita, I started grieving the moment I’d have to say goodbye to it. The owner, Freddie, opened the bar just four months ago, but it’s already a place you won’t want to miss on your trip to San Sebastián

Freddie is the best host! Fantastic cocktails along with a friendly and personal service. High quality drinks and great prices. Support this exciting new bar in San Sebastian. You won't be disappointed!

Grate price compare to other restaurants in the area. The service was fast . The food is grate but it doesn’t have many local dishes. Good place for a quick lunch !

Had the tacos, tapas with goat cheese and ham, and a cold beer. What’s not to like, you know very well what you’re getting. It’s not Michelin star restaurant, but it’s damn good.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Live Music in San Sebastián

To truly experience the local music scene like a seasoned Donostiarra, a little preparation goes a long way. The city’s culture operates on a specific timetable and social code that differs slightly from other European hubs. Understanding these nuances will ensure you don’t miss the opening act or find yourself locked out of a sold-out show.

Understand the Late Schedule. Live music in San Sebastián starts late, often much later than in Northern Europe or the US. If a venue lists doors at 9:00 PM, do not expect the headline band to walk on stage before 10:30 PM or even midnight. Locals typically use the early evening for dinner and pintxos, only heading to the venue afterward. Plan a late afternoon siesta or a coffee so you have the stamina to last until the 2:00 AM encore.

Buy Tickets in Advance for Big Names. While spontaneous entry is possible for smaller bars, established venues like Dabadaba or the Kursaal often sell out quickly for popular touring acts. Because San Sebastián is a key stop between Madrid and Paris, fans from surrounding Basque cities often travel in. Check the venue’s social media or ticketing platforms like Entradium or See Tickets weeks in advance to avoid disappointment.

Respect the "Pintxo Pote" Pre-Game. If you want to drink like a local before a show, look for bars offering "poteo." This involves ordering a drink and getting a small bite at a reduced price. However, be mindful that venues often have strict policies against bringing outside drinks in. Do your pre-gaming in the surrounding bars of the Gros or Egia neighborhoods, but arrive at the venue ready to support the bar inside—it’s how these independent spaces survive.

Check the Language of the Lyrics. The Basque language is a huge part of the identity here. While you might not understand the words of a band singing in Euskera, the emotional delivery is universal. Don’t let a language barrier deter you from seeing a local act; often, the crowd participation and energy are more intense at these shows than at English-speaking gigs. It is the most authentic cultural immersion you can find.

Dress for the Mosh and the Weather. The climate in San Sebastián is famously temperamental, with sudden rain showers common even in summer. If you are queuing outside a venue like Le Bukowski or Dabadaba, you will need a waterproof layer. However, inside, the venues get hot and crowded. Wear layers you can easily tie around your waist, and opt for closed-toe shoes—especially if you plan to get close to the stage for rock or punk shows.
