15 Best Tourist Attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

As the capital of the largest and most populous of Spain’s Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife often gets overshadowed by the beach resorts of the south. Yet this bustling port city offers a distinctly authentic Canarian experience, blending deep maritime history with a surprisingly vibrant urban culture. It is a place where you can wander through colonial-era plazas in the morning and explore cutting-edge modern architecture by the afternoon.

Unlike the arid landscapes of the island’s southern coast, Santa Cruz enjoys a lush, green backdrop framed by the Anaga Mountains. This proximity to nature makes it a unique hybrid destination, offering both cosmopolitan amenities and immediate access to dramatic hiking trails. For travelers seeking a city break with a subtropical twist, it is an unmissable stop.

The city is famous for hosting the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, widely considered second only to Rio de Janeiro in scale and spectacle. However, there is a rich tapestry of sights to enjoy all year round, from serene botanical gardens to formidable coastal fortresses. The local cuisine, heavily influenced by the nearby ocean and volcanic soil, is another highlight waiting to be discovered.

Because the city center is compact and largely pedestrian-friendly, it is remarkably easy to explore on foot. You can transition from high-end shopping streets to historic cobblestone alleys within minutes, all while enjoying the refreshing Atlantic breeze. The local tram system also makes it simple to venture into the neighboring city of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When planning your itinerary, it helps to understand that Santa Cruz is not a typical "museum city" but rather a living, breathing administrative hub. This means you will be experiencing attractions alongside locals going about their daily lives, which adds a layer of genuine authenticity. From markets selling fresh papaya to lively tapas bars, the city invites you to slow down and immerse yourself.

To help you make the most of your visit, we have curated a list of the most compelling sights and experiences. These destinations showcase the historical depth, natural beauty, and architectural innovation that define the capital. Whether you are here for a day trip or a week-long stay, these spots should anchor your travel plans.

Here are the 15 best tourist attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife that you simply cannot miss.

Small free museum under the Plaza De España. The entrance is small and look like is under construction but its actually open to the public. The staff is very friendly and informative.
Paul Ciprian★★☆☆☆
In fact, it is not a castle at all, but just a story about a castle that once existed here. All that can be seen are some fragments of walls made of massive stone blocks, a refurbished cannon and a few rusty cannons. Plus written information, on some panels, on the reinforced concrete walls. Nothing impressive, maybe just the age of the place. Entry is free.
Keiran★★★☆☆
See the cannon that shot Nelson. Entrance is a bit dangerous and unsightly but the small museum below is interesting and free.
Allan Carpenter★★★★★
Fantastic to see how they have recovered the castle from being buried. It's great to read about a piece of British history from the "other side". El Tiger; the cannon that took Nelson's arm is a great little secret.
J Kkl★★★★☆
Located only underground and hard to find, yet housing a famous canon that faced against Nelson's force. Lacking English descriptions and some more history context (there was a handout in English but also quite vague). A bit of lost potential.

The Palmetum in Santa Cruz is a fantastic botanical garden and well worth a visit. It's the perfect place for a relaxing walk, and you can easily spend a few hours exploring the grounds. The ticket price is very reasonable at €6 per person, and parking is free. The gardens are beautifully maintained, with an impressive variety of plants from around the world. The different sections are organised into themed zones, making it interesting to explore and learn about the various species. The paths are well maintained, and everything is clearly cared for to a high standard. Along the way, there are several lovely terraces offering beautiful views, making it a great spot for photos or simply taking in the scenery. There is also a small kiosk where you can grab a drink or a snack, which is a nice addition if you're spending a few hours there. Overall, a peaceful, well-kept, and fascinating botanical garden that offers excellent value for money. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Santa Cruz.
Zala★★★★★
I definitely recommend visiting the botanical garden; it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. Although finding parking nearby is practically impossible, I suggest parking in the garage beneath the auditorium. It isn't too expensive, and your car will stay cool. I definitely recommend visiting in the morning. While there is plenty of shade in the garden, I wouldn't visit during the peak heat of the day. The park is beautiful and well-maintained; practically all the plants are labeled and carefully tended. It is fascinating to see so many different plants from various parts of the world. I highly recommend a visit.
Ole Gray★★★★★
I really like this park. It’s full of unusual and exotic trees, and the section along the ocean is particularly scenic. There are several viewpoints and plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the view. Palmetum sits on top of a hill, so the views from the lookout points are genuinely impressive. You get a great perspective over the city, the port and the ocean. Entry isn’t free, but it’s reasonably priced. There are discounts for children, disabled visitors and Canary Islands residents. Roughly in the middle of the park, there’s a small, simple cafe selling drinks, ice cream and snacks. Nothing fancy, but perfectly adequate for a quick break. Parking is easy. There’s a very large car park next to the park, or rather two large parking areas. Finding a space is rarely a problem. The entire park is accessible. You can even hire a mobility scooter there. Toilets, including accessible toilets, are available both near the entrance and in the centre of the park. The park is built on a hill, but it’s easy to get around in an electric wheelchair. On the way back, you can either head down the paths or take the lift instead.
Jo Foulke★★★★★
The Palmatum is well worth a visit and was €6 per person at the time of my visit. I loved it; it's an oasis of tranquility next to a busy city and the fact that it is built on what was a rubbish dump makes it truly amazing. There are palms from across the globe and it is split into zones. There are numerous viewpoints with benches to spend a reflective moment. There is a catering trailer offering snacks, hot and cold drinks and ice-creams and the prices are reasonable.
Darren Roberts (DarrenRobertsMusic)★★★★★
I was here mainly for the endemic birds and less so for the plants. There was an incredible array of palm trees, my wife enjoyed these while I looked for the wildlife. We both had a fab time despite the 30c heat.

The sign is located in Plaza de Espana, right next to the artificial lake, which is occasionally drained. This is the very heart of the city. The main pedestrian street starts nearby. You’ll also find the Guanche statues and a small vertical garden just a short walk away. Around New Year, there’s usually a festive market here and in the square next door. During major celebrations, a large stage is often set up nearby as well. As for the sign itself, it’s more of a quick stop than a major attraction. Snap a selfie, have a look around, and move on. I wouldn’t make a special trip just to see it. The whole area is flat and step-free. There’s also a public toilet in the neighbouring square, including an accessible toilet for wheelchair users.
Marcos Yanes★★★★★
We were here early in the morning, so there was no wait time. However, the sign is cool, and the park that it was on was beautiful. Every sculpture or historic place in the park has a description for you to learn a piece of their history, pretty cool!

The Santa Cruz sign is such a fun and vibrant landmark—perfect for photos and a great way to mark your visit to the city. Located near the heart of town and surrounded by beautiful scenery, it’s hard to miss and even harder not to love. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local showing friends around, the sign makes for a great memory. Simple, iconic, and full of city pride!

Darren Ashley Holbrook★★★★★
The Castle of St John the Baptist (also known as Castillo de San Juan Bautista or the Black Castle / Castillo Negro) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a charming and impressive historical gem right in the heart of the city. This compact, circular fortress, built from striking black volcanic stone, sits beautifully near the iconic Auditorio de Tenerife and the Parque Marítimo César Manrique. It's incredibly nice to visit—quiet, scenic, and photogenic, with a little bridge leading to it that adds to the appeal. The contrast of the dark stone against the blue sea and modern surroundings makes it feel both timeless and serene. Even if you can only admire it from the outside (as it's often not open for interior visits), it's a peaceful spot to stroll around, soak in the views, and enjoy a moment of calm amid the bustling capital. Historically, construction began in 1641 and was completed in 1644 to bolster Santa Cruz's coastal defenses against pirates and invaders. It served as the second-most important fort in protecting the city (after the now-lost Castle of San Cristóbal). Rebuilt in 1765 with an added sea-facing cylindrical tower, it played a key role in the island's military past and is a well-preserved piece of Tenerife's heritage. A lovely, respectful place with real historical charm—perfect for a quick, enriching stop while exploring Santa Cruz. Highly recommended!
nigel teece★★★★☆
Its near the main auditorium, nice view of the sea and near a water park , it was closed when we visited so cant say if you can go inside, if you look back to the city there is a road with a walkway of tiles from 1962 onwards , they are copies of the adverts for the winter Festival , they are for sure worth look .
Dan Williams★★★★★
I loved the building and feel the local government is missing out by not making this a museum. It was great to see it but that’s all you can do. If you are in the area definitely walk on by but don’t make a special trip
Q G★★★★★
The Castle of St. John the Baptist, also known as the Black Castle, is one of the most historically significant sites in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Built in 1644, this 17th-century fortress served as a key defensive structure and is the second-largest fortification in the city after the Castillo de San Cristóbal. It played a pivotal role in protecting the island from enemy attacks, including the infamous and ill-fated 1797 invasion attempt led by the sanguinary British pirate Horatio Nelson—an episode that remains deeply etched in the local historical memory. Standing at the edge of the coastline, the castle’s cylindrical structure and robust stonework reflect its military origins, and from the outside, it is remarkably well preserved, retaining much of its original character. The setting, right by the sea, adds a dramatic and contemplative atmosphere that invites reflection on the island's rich past. However, I must say that a monument of such importance deserves greater visibility and institutional care. While the exterior is in good condition, there seems to be a lack of promotion and educational signage, and its historical relevance is not as celebrated as it ought to be. This fortress is a tangible link to Tenerife’s colonial and maritime heritage, and it would benefit from further efforts to protect, interpret, and showcase its significance for both residents and visitors. A visit is highly recommended for anyone interested in history, military architecture, or the lesser-known narratives of Spanish coastal defense.
Charles Budman★★★☆☆
Very calming coastal spot to listen to the waves and have a picnic. To the left is cool paintings of known figures along the rocks.

It was a nice experience. Kids will sure remember Mummies exhibition. It was something different to do on holidays. Fairly affordable tickets and a nice exposition. Also we loved butterflies, beetles and other animals. It was a good one for the family trip.

A fascinating museum! The collection of Guanche mummies is truly unique and impressive. Great displays on the nature and history of Tenerife. Highly recommended for a visit in Santa Cruz!

The Museum of Nature and Archaeology, known locally as MUNA, is a world-class cultural institution in Santa Cruz de Tenerife that provides an in-depth look at the volcanic origins and indigenous history of the Canary Islands. It is housed in the Old Civil Hospital, a beautiful 18th-century neoclassical building that has been designated an Asset of Cultural Interest. Key Highlights and Exhibits The museum is most famous for its extensive collection related to the Guanches, the aboriginal inhabitants of Tenerife. Guanche Mummies: MUNA is a global reference in mummy preservation, housing the world's largest collection of Guanche mummies. The exhibits use modern conservation technology to display these ancient remains and explain the funeral customs of the island's first people. Archaeological Treasures: You can view significant artifacts like the Zanata Stone, which features Berber-Punic inscriptions, as well as ancient Guanche pottery and items from the royal tombs of their kings (the Menceyes). Natural Sciences: The natural history section features life-size models of endemic species and an impressive paleontological collection. Highlights include fossils of the Tenerife giant rat, the giant tortoise, and the Gallotia goliath (a giant lizard). Inclusive Experience: Formerly known as the "Museum of Nature and Man," it was renamed in 2018 to be more inclusive. It offers free audio guides in six languages (Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, and Russian) that can be accessed on your own mobile device.
Anton Kovač★★★★★
Visited the archeology part of the museum especially to see the mummies of original settlers Guanche. The museum explains the geological origins of the Canary islands very well. All explanations are in Spanish but you can scan a QR code for audio guide in several languages. Nice touch but they forgot about the hearing impaired tourists - written explanations at least in English would help. Nevertheless the archeology of Canarias is explained very well in second and third floor for every island. You learn how the Guanche lived, ate, which deseases they had and how they healed them. The most special exhibition are the mummies found in Tenerife. Last but not least, the entrance fee is modest and even reduced for seniors over 65.
Ilya★★★★★
Amazed by this museum, worth every penny... if you like to learn about the Canary islands and find out about their history, nature, and so on. This is the place, it covers it all. It also has artefacts of other islands, countries that once ruled the islands

The cave as such is nice, the trail leads up to a spot with a nice view over the city, but it's a bit of a climb. Unfortunately in the cave is a lot of rubbish, all over the place, including some broken bottles, feces (dog or human?). So be careful walking around the cave, you might step into something you'll find difficult to remove from your Shops.
Boris Gaensicke★★★☆☆
The cave itself is quite impressive, but unfortunately it's full of rubbish, empty cans, broken bottles, a mattress and a fire extinguisher, clearly lots of parties happen in here. It'd be good if the city would clean up the space. When you drive up from Santa Cruz and reach the cave, you'll get to a T-junction: do *not* turn right, as it's a steep downhill road. Instead, turn left, where you can turn the car around and park. Good views over the city.
Jiří Štencl★★★★★
Nice place with a view. It is definitely worth continuing to hike above the cave, you can walk all the way to Laguna. There is also a nice sunrise from the place.
Debby K★★★★☆
We walked to get here by ascending hundreds of steps. The houses along the way are fascinating to see, as they are built on this cliff (mountain?) and access to them is not easy. (I pity the supermarket delivery people.) The views from the lookout platform just opposite the cave are beautiful. The cave itself is interesting, but one of those things that you see it and that’s it. We did not go on the trail above. We came prepared with hiking poles, but started to ascend the steps to the left of the cave and it seemed to easy to fall, as we are an older couple who like to hike but don’t like to fall. So instead we walked on the winding road downhill from there. Other people have commented about the dirt and I also noticed what a shame. Why do people filth up pretty places? I’m uploading one photo of some garbage. If you go there, please do not litter. I suspect there are some local kids who leave some of the mess, because when we were there, there were some teenage boys smoking in the cave.
Olga Mihaevich★★★★★

The park is small but very green. There are two playgrounds and two fountains, as well as several ponds. The paths are paved, and the park is lit in the evening. Parking near the park is very difficult, so don’t count on finding a space there. The park is accessible, with entrances from all sides. Where there are level changes, there are ramps. There are two regular restrooms and one portable toilet, but none are accessible.

I found myself wandering through this beautiful square, killing time while waiting for the doors of La Concepción to open. It turned out to be one of those rare, unforgettable moments that stay with you long after you leave. Just as the church bells began to chime, echoing through the historic streets, I noticed a woman sitting on a nearby bench who quietly crossed herself. In that instant, everything seemed to align: the warmth of the wind, the profound sense of faith, and the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The air was thick with nostalgia and history, and I felt a deep connection to the soul of Santa Cruz. A stunning masterpiece—highly recommend a guided tour! The architecture of this building is absolutely spectacular. However, to truly understand the scale, history, and full grandeur of this construction, I highly recommend taking a guided tour. Additionally, the ideal way to experience it is by booking tickets to an actual show. Seeing a performance inside adds immense value to the whole experience and lets you fully appreciate the building's incredible design and acoustics. An absolute must-visit in Santa Cruz!

Beautiful futuristic architecture. Great location to spend the day and walk around. The Auditorio de Tenerife "Adán Martín" is an iconic architectural landmark and performing arts venue located on the seafront of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the building is celebrated for its futuristic, curving white concrete structures, most notably the massive "wing" or "arc" that defies gravity above the main hall.

Impressive auditorium. It made me think of Sydney Opera House in terms of architecture. Was the architect inspired by the SOH? I don’t know. It is a beautiful building!

The Auditorio de Tenerife is one of the most famous landmarks in Santa Cruz de Tenerife—often compared to the Sydney Opera House. Great seafront location, the building looks amazing, especially at sunset. Seating, staff, facilities very good. Easy to park in underground carpark of the opera house itself, also offers prepaid parking on arrival to avoid having to queue after the concert. Cafe with seating overlooking the water, snacks/ drinks very reasonably priced.

Essential Tips for Visiting Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Navigating a new city is always easier when you know the local secrets regarding transport, dining, and etiquette. The following recommendations will help you blend in seamlessly and maximize your time in the capital. From understanding the local schedule to packing appropriately for microclimates, a little preparation goes a long way.

  1. Time Your Visit Around the Carnival: If you love vibrant street parties, plan your trip for February or March to experience the Carnival. However, book accommodations at least six months in advance, as the city fills up quickly and prices surge significantly during this period.
  2. Wear Comfortable, Layered Clothing: The weather in Santa Cruz can be changeable due to the nearby mountains. While the coast is often sunny, clouds can roll in quickly. Wear breathable layers and always carry a light jacket, especially if you plan to visit viewpoints or the Anaga mountains.
  3. Embrace the Late Dining Culture: Restaurants generally open for lunch around 1:00 PM and dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM. To avoid eating alone in an empty restaurant, adjust your meal times to match the local rhythm, or rely on tapas bars that serve food continuously throughout the day.
  4. Use the Tram for Day Trips: Parking in the city center is notoriously difficult and expensive. If you want to visit the historic city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, leave the car behind and take the efficient tram (Line 1), which connects the two city centers in about 20 minutes.
  5. Learn Basic Spanish Phrases: While you will find English speakers in major hotels and tourist offices, many local restaurant staff and shopkeepers in traditional areas speak only Spanish. Knowing basic greetings and how to order food will greatly enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture.

The beauty of Santa Cruz de Tenerife lies in its ability to surprise visitors who assume it is just a transit point. It offers a depth of culture, architecture, and gastronomy that rewards those willing to look beyond the beach umbrella. Spending time here provides a window into the true soul of the Canary Islands, far removed from the tourist crowds of the south.

Whether you spend your day marveling at the Auditorium’s sweeping curves, haggling for local cheese at the market, or simply sipping a cortado in a sun-drenched plaza, the city leaves a lasting impression. It serves as a reminder that sometimes the most memorable travel experiences are found in the living, breathing capitals rather than the postcard beaches.
