12 Best Beaches and Coastal Paths in Tossa de Mar

Sitting just north of the bustling resort towns of Lloret de Mar and Blanes, Tossa de Mar offers a different kind of Costa Brava experience. This historic fishing village is the only fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast, and its iconic castle, the Vila Vella, has drawn artists, writers, and travelers for over a century. Yet beyond the cobblestone lanes and ancient stone towers lies another compelling reason to visit: a coastline that remains surprisingly wild, rugged, and unspoiled.

The natural geography of Tossa de Mar is a gift to anyone who loves the sea. Granite cliffs plunge into turquoise water, hidden coves open up only to those willing to walk or paddle, and pine forests stretch down to meet the sand. While the main beach is lively and family-friendly, the surrounding coastal paths lead quickly to quiet corners where the only sounds are the breeze in the pines and the soft wash of waves against the rocks. It is a landscape that rewards curiosity and a little effort.

For walkers, the network of coastal paths, known locally as camins de ronda, provides a front-row seat to some of the most dramatic scenery in Catalonia. These historic trails were once used by fishermen and smugglers to navigate the rugged shoreline, and today they serve as scenic walking routes. Whether you are looking for a short stroll to a neighboring cove or a longer hike along the cliffs, the paths around Tossa offer clear routes, panoramic viewpoints, and direct access to the sea.

The beaches themselves vary widely in character. Some are wide crescents of golden sand with full amenities, while others are intimate pebble coves tucked beneath pine-covered headlands. Water quality along this stretch of the Costa Brava is consistently excellent, and the clarity is often remarkable, making it a favorite destination for snorkelers and swimmers. Even in the height of summer, a short walk from the center is usually enough to find a quieter spot.

Understanding the rhythm of the coast here is part of the experience. Morning light turns the water a deep, glassy blue before the midday sun brightens it to a shimmering turquoise. Late afternoon is the best time for a coastal walk, when the heat softens and the low sun picks out the texture of the cliffs and the white wake of passing boats. In the evening, the beaches empty out and the waterfront restaurants and bars begin to glow along the bay.

What makes Tossa de Mar truly special is how accessible this natural beauty is. You do not need a car or specialized equipment to explore much of the coastline. A good pair of walking shoes, a bottle of water, and a basic map are enough to take you from the center of town to secluded coves and breathtaking viewpoints in under an hour. For those staying longer, the area also connects to a wider network of trails that extend north toward Sant Feliu de Guíxols and south toward Lloret de Mar.

Below is a curated selection of the finest beaches and coastal paths in and around Tossa de Mar. Each entry has been chosen for its scenic quality, accessibility, and the overall experience it offers to visitors. Whether you are planning a family beach day, a romantic sunset walk, or a full day of coastal hiking, this list provides a reliable starting point for exploring one of Spain’s most beautiful stretches of shoreline.

If you’re visiting Tossa de Mar, don’t miss this viewpoint. It offers one of the best views of the beach, the old town, and the castle. The walk up is short but includes some stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Sunset is the best time to come, but it gets busy, so arrive a little earlier if you want the best spot for photos.

Beautiful view from here! This loop takes about 2 hours (although we got lost at some point so it was longer) really nice walk, and you can finish it off with a swim in the town so bring your swimming suits!

A cove of clear waters fit for swimming, calm and well sheltered from the open sea. High cliffs stand on either side like ancient sentinels, and the shore remaineth quiet, far from the press of crowds, where nature keepeth her own still beauty.

Loved it! Easy access for pregnant women. Some stairs to go down but not difficult (the way back was a bit harder haha but doable). The left side has shade until about 11h in July (little beach /rock side). If u go early u can find nice spots, it gets full after that, We brought snacks but there is a little bar with food/drinks. Wonderful to snorkel! We will be back!

Visited Mid May 2026. Tucked right beneath the medieval walls of Tossa de Mar's historic Vila Vella (old town), this small cove offers one of the most picturesque and atmospheric spots on the Catalan coast. It's a compact beach — roughly 80-90 meters long and quite narrow — with golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs and castle walls rising dramatically behind it. Scenery & Atmosphere: Extremely scenic with the ancient stone walls and towers providing a unique, fairy-tale backdrop. It's sheltered, often calmer than the main beach (Platja Gran), and feels more intimate and peaceful. Many visitors call it a "hidden gem" or their favorite spot in the area. Great for swimming and snorkeling thanks to the clear, calm sea and interesting seabed. It's family-friendly with gentle waves in many conditions. You can reach it via a short, atmospheric walk through the old town walls (sometimes described as squeezing through a small opening or descending steps). It's very close to the main sights, making it perfect for a combined town-and-beach day trip from Barcelona (about 1h15m drive).

Lovely beach.Excellent location for snorkeling. The beach bar is great. Nice people and friendly atmosphere
Andre Amaral★★★★★
Es Codolar is a small beach just below the old town walls of Tossa de Mar. The beach has coarse sand and pebbles, with clear water that’s great for swimming and snorkeling. It usually feels quieter than the main beach, but it fills up quickly in summer because it’s small. There are restaurants and toilets just a short walk away, so it’s easy to spend a few hours here.

Absolutely lovely sandy beach in an idyllic Mediterranean setting, clean shoreline, lovely cafe, glorious breeze and crystalline clear water.
Mousa Al Shammas★★★★★
Platja Mar Menuda is absolutely beautiful! The water is crystal clear, and while swimming we saw plenty of fish, which made the experience even more special. 🐟 Definitely recommend bringing goggles 🥽 if you enjoy snorkeling or just want to admire the marine life. The beach is smaller and cozier compared to the main one in Tossa, giving it a more relaxed vibe. Perfect spot for both relaxing and exploring!
Andre Amaral★★★★★
If you prefer a quieter beach than Platja Gran, Mar Menuda is a great choice. The water is very clear and it’s one of the best places in Tossa de Mar for snorkeling. There are showers, toilets, and a beach bar during the summer. The beach is smaller, so it fills up quickly… arrive early if you are visiting in peak season.
Push On TV★★★★★
Small beach with beautiful views of the castle and rocks. At the top, lots of bars and restaurants, but it is almost impossible to find a parking space. In a minute there is a private parking at the top, if you fallowing one-way road from the beach for 20 euros for the day.

Visited in June 2026 Platja Gran in Tossa de Mar is one of the most iconic beaches on the Costa Brava, combining crystal-clear Mediterranean waters with a spectacular backdrop of the medieval walls of Vila Vella. The golden sand is clean and spacious, making it an excellent choice for swimming, relaxing, or simply enjoying the scenery. The beach is well maintained and offers plenty of amenities, including showers, sunbed rentals, waterfront cafés, and easy access to the charming old town. Whether you're visiting with family, taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade, or looking for fantastic photography opportunities, Platja Gran delivers an unforgettable experience. Arriving early during the summer is recommended, as this popular beach quickly fills with visitors. Overall, it's one of the highlights of Tossa de Mar and a destination well worth experiencing.

Visited in June 2026 Cala Pola is a beautiful little cove surrounded by pine-covered cliffs, making it one of the most picturesque beaches on the Costa Brava. The crystal-clear turquoise water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing while enjoying the peaceful natural setting. Although it can get busy during the summer, the scenery more than makes up for it. The beach is clean and well maintained, with convenient facilities nearby, making it a great destination for families, couples, and photographers alike. If you enjoy coastal landscapes and calm waters, Cala Pola is definitely worth a visit

What an amazing place. Bit of cliff jumping. It’s not a sandy beach. Like tiny pebble which it’s basically sand but different. Very nice. Restaurant is lovely so is the take away. Pints and cocktails on the beach. Can’t ask for more

Cala Llevadó is a small beach with clear water, surrounded by trees, so it feels more peaceful than the larger beaches nearby. It’s a great place for swimming and snorkeling. There are toilets and a beach bar in summer, but the walk down to the beach is quite steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Arrive early if you’re driving, as parking is limited.

Nice beach situated near a campsite. Nice beach bar in the corner of the beach. Would recommend to watch your surroundings when bathing and take rubbish with. Anyways - a great beach for relaxing
Monika Rogalski★★★★☆
We spent 4 nights at this campsite with a tent. Since we were there mid-September, we didn't have that many neighbours and could enjoy some peace and quiet as well as beautiful views of the sea. I really liked the fact that the campsite was next to several really nice beaches (3 in total, 1 of them a nudist beach) that had beach bars/restaurants (I definitely recommend Chringuito Mar Azul!). Getting down to the beaches involves climbing lots of steep stairs though - if you have bad knees, this could be quite a problem. The facilities of the campsite were also okay and clean (but to be fair, there weren't that many people using it at the time we were there either), but there's only 1 big house on a hill with all of the facilities and reaching them could be quite a walk/climb, depending on where you're staying. A big fat downside was the noise from all of the construction work all night long (!) during our last pre-booked night there, which deterred us from extending our time there. Another big problem was that we weren't informed about the fact that there are wild boars in the camping - they came to our tent during the first night there and scared the heck out of us. Please do not leave any food or trash outside!! All in all, I would recommend going there if you want 'wild' camping with sea views, but are willing to sacrifice convenience (no possibility to park on the lot next to your tent, facilities quite far and everywhere you go you have to climb stairs/go up hills).
Wendy Corbin★★★★★
Absolutely stunning, we were staying at Sea Green camping Cala Llevado. The beach is accessed from the site. A lovely bar and gorgeous sandy beach
A. PaCo★★★★★
I love this camping because of the location and the views. There is no comparison possible! They offer activities for kids and families, yoga, zumba, etc. The supermarket has all you may need. The restaurant in the beach is amazing (chiringuito mar azul) and their beaches so beautiful! Toiletts are clean enough, no complains, just a bit old.

Was here for a holiday for 4 days, and had spent all my nights at the beach. But this side of costa brava is exceptionally beautiful. The night view is amazing. One of the best experiences ever. There is definitely no fees for the whole area, very much accessible to all tourists. Always busy with tourists and locals. The best part was going for a walk up the castle early morning. The view was just mesmerising. There are so many spots where there is information about the history of the place and its so great to learn about it. Definitely take a walk early morning. And by the night enjoy sitting by the water.

Tossa de Mar is one of the most beautiful places on the Costa Brava. The beach is clean, the water is crystal clear, and the views are absolutely stunning. Walking through the historic castle and the old town feels like stepping back in time. The combination of the medieval walls, breathtaking sea views, and charming streets makes this place truly unforgettable. It's perfect for families, couples, and anyone looking to relax or explore. Highly recommended if you're visiting Spain!

Beautiful beach with crystal-clear water and stunning views. The atmosphere is relaxed, clean, and perfect for a family day by the sea. The historic castle in the background makes the scenery even more special. One of the most charming beaches on the Costa Brava. Definitely worth visiting!

Absolutely stunning beach! Platja Gran in Tossa de Mar is hands-down one of the most beautiful spots on the Costa Brava. The golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and the breathtaking backdrop of the medieval castle walls and old town (Vila Vella) make it feel like a postcard come to life. The beach is well-maintained with plenty of services: sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, and nearby restaurants and bars along the lively promenade. Perfect for swimming, relaxing, or just soaking in the views. It can get busy in peak summer, but it's worth it for the scenery. Highly recommend visiting early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and magical light

The Mirador de Tossa de Mar is one of the finest places to admire the beauty of the Costa Brava. Perched above the town, it offers sweeping views of Tossa de Mar's medieval walls, golden beaches, turquoise Mediterranean waters, and rugged coastline. Whether you visit during the day or at sunset, the scenery is simply breathtaking and well worth the short stop. For photographers, this viewpoint is a must-see. The elevated perspective provides countless opportunities to capture the iconic silhouette of the old town, the castle, and the sparkling sea in changing light. Easily accessible and peaceful, Mirador de Tossa de Mar is an unforgettable spot that perfectly showcases why Tossa de Mar is considered one of the gems of the Costa Brava.

A fantastic spot for anyone visiting the area. The views of the sea and the town are absolutely stunning, and it’s a great place to take in the scenery or snap some photos. It’s especially nice at sunset when everything is bathed in golden light. The walk up is easy and definitely worth it for the peaceful vibe and the beautiful outlook over the Costa Brava. Beautiful little cove. Hike right down from the road and make sure to bring an umbrella and/ or a chair. There is a nice area only a couple feet deep and then it gets deeper to swim out further in the cove. Great couple of rocks for kids to jump off of. Not much sand though, mostly rocks.
Andre Amaral★★★★★
Cala Bona is a small cove with clear water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The beach has coarse sand mixed with small pebbles, so water shoes can be helpful. Parking is close by, but spaces fill up early in summer. If you’re using public transport, be prepared for a short walk. Because the cove is small, it’s best to arrive early to enjoy it before it gets crowded.
Liam White★★★☆☆
DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR. My partner and I hiked down to the cove and back within 30 minutes, and in that time our car was broken into and all our belongings stolen. This is a high-risk spot for break-ins, so beware. The cove and water are lovely though.
Maria Semonova★★★★★
This cove definitely worth the time to hike there from Tossa de Mar. Beautiful views on a way there, so better to wear a good shoes. One of the most beautiful small coves with crystal-clear water, surrounded by pine trees. The seabed is a mix of sand, small pebbles, and rocks.
Mark T★★★★☆
Well worth the hike down and back up. Get there early for the best spot. Shallow waters with a little fun tidal wave pull. No sand to lay on though it's all rock.

The Murallas de la Vila Vella are without a doubt the most emblematic landmark in the area. It is an excellent place for iconic, artistic photos, especially during the golden hour when the light hits the medieval stone against the Mediterranean Sea. The historic path is beautifully preserved, and every corner offers a unique perspective. A must-visit if you are looking for the best photography locations on the Costa Brava.
Alaleh - FoodyTO★★★★★
Walking along the old walls of Vila Vella was one of the nicest parts of visiting Tossa de Mar. The stone walls, towers, narrow paths, and sea views make the whole area feel very special, almost like stepping into a small medieval village by the water. It’s a beautiful place to walk slowly, take photos, and enjoy the views of the beach and coastline. The walk is a great mix of history and scenery in one place. Every corner had a different view, from the old town streets to the blue Mediterranean Sea.
Michael Stretton★★★★★
Beautiful walk up to the bar/restaurant at the top which had great beer and food (including kids food) toilets up there too and exceptional views of Tossa de mar
Victor Manuel Mendez★★★★★
What an amazing place. Charming little town with old medial castle. There are many shops/restaurants/bars on the way to road to the Castle. Once inside the old castle walls, it almost feels like you have travel back in time. There are also a few shops and restaurants within the walls. The views from walls and from a church at the top of the hill are amazing.

Beautiful beach to relax and enjoy some fresh breeze from the ocean. The views are amazing, you can get there by boat from Tossa de Mar which also goes through some beautiful caves before arriving here.
Prasad Adhav★★★★★
It is an amazing little isolated place. There are a few restaurants and a hotel. You can either go here by hiking or by a boat. It's not that far by hiking, just 1.5hrs. Boat is expensive as they are tourist boats with glass bottoms, which I would suggest to avoid if you are on a budget. The water is a bit warmer here. But there are lots of stones so a bit difficult to get into and out of the water... But once in, it's paradise. I went on a week day so there were few people.
Peter Broome★★★★★
Day trip from Tossa de Mar. More sandy beach and quieter. Surroundings are beautiful. Boat trip takes you round the coast and into some caves. Price is reasonable but why cause a fuss as your on holiday! Definitely worth a trip!
Dmitry Vitchinka★★★★☆
Nice beach. Coarse sand and stones. Clear water with a rich underwater flora and fauna. Snorkelling equipment is quite recommended. At the restaurant you need wait to be seated about 30 minutes. The menu is pizza and pasta. Nothing special. There is even no any green salad. The parking is quite busy even thought it costs 20 eur a day. We arrived at 12:30 and it was a miracle we were parked. So you need to come there earlier.

Gorgeous beach! We discovered it on our glass bottom boat tour and came back the next day by car to spend part of the day and have lunch at the restaurant (Parda)

Tips for Exploring the Tossa de Mar Coastline

A little preparation goes a long way when exploring this rugged and beautiful part of the Costa Brava. The coastline here is generally safe and well-marked, but its rocky terrain, strong sun, and variable facilities mean that smart planning can significantly improve your comfort and enjoyment. The following practical tips will help you make the most of your time on the beaches and trails.

Wear proper footwear. Many of the best coves and viewpoints are reached via uneven rocky paths. Sturdy sandals with good grip or lightweight hiking shoes are far better than flip-flops for coastal walks. You can always change into water shoes for swimming on pebble beaches.

Pack water and snacks. Outside the main beach, facilities are limited. Carry enough water for your planned route, especially in July and August when temperatures can exceed 30°C. A few pieces of fruit or energy bars are useful if you plan to walk for more than an hour.

Start early or go late. The coastal paths offer little shade, and the midday sun can be intense. Plan your walks for early morning or late afternoon. You will avoid the heat, find fewer people on the trails, and enjoy softer light for photography.

Protect yourself from the sun. A hat, sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen are essential year-round, but especially from May to September. The reflection of sunlight off the sea and pale rocks increases exposure even when the air feels cool.

Bring snorkeling gear if you have it. The water clarity around Tossa is excellent, and many coves have rocky edges teeming with fish. A simple mask and snorkel can transform a beach stop into a memorable underwater experience.

Respect the environment. The coastline around Tossa de Mar is a protected natural area in many sections. Take all rubbish with you, stay on marked paths to prevent erosion, and avoid disturbing marine life. This helps preserve the beauty of the coast for everyone.

As the sun dips behind the pine-covered hills and the last swimmers leave the water, Tossa de Mar takes on a golden, peaceful quality. The boats bob gently in the bay, and the lights of the Vila Vella begin to glow above the darkening sea. It is a place that stays with you, not because of any single attraction, but because of the way its natural coastline and historic character blend so seamlessly together.

Whether you spend your days hiking the cliff paths, snorkeling in hidden coves, or simply relaxing on the sand with a good book, the coast around Tossa de Mar offers a rare combination of accessibility and unspoiled beauty. It invites you to slow down, explore at your own pace, and discover the quiet corners that make this stretch of the Costa Brava so enduringly special.
