Santander is a city that lives with its face turned toward the sea. Framed by the dramatic cliffs of the Cantabrian coast and the deep blue of the Bay of Biscay, this elegant northern Spanish capital offers a rare combination of urban sophistication and wild, accessible nature. Unlike the crowded Mediterranean resorts further south, the coastline here feels raw, green, and refreshingly unspoiled.
The geography of Santander is defined by the peninsula of La Magdalena and the sweeping arc of El Sardinero. To the west, the land rises into rugged headlands, while to the east, wide sandy beaches stretch toward the open ocean. This variety means visitors can alternate between sheltered coves perfect for swimming and exposed clifftop paths ideal for bracing walks.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the city functions as a gateway to some of Spain’s most underrated coastal scenery. The famous Camino de Santiago del Norte passes directly through the area, bringing a steady flow of walkers who understand that Cantabria’s coastline rivals anything in the country. Yet even without a pilgrimage plan, the local network of coastal paths is remarkably easy to access by foot or public transport.
What makes these beaches and walks so special is their sense of authenticity. You will find families picnicking on the grass above Playa del Camello, surfers checking the swell at Los Locos, and locals walking their dogs along the clifftops at sunset. This is not a manufactured tourist experience; it is simply how life unfolds in a city blessed with such a dramatic shoreline.
The climate here is Atlantic, meaning summers are mild and comfortable rather than scorching. This makes active exploration pleasant even in July and August, when many other Spanish coastal destinations become uncomfortably hot. Spring and autumn are particularly rewarding for walkers, with wildflowers blooming on the headlands and clearer, quieter trails.
Because the tidal range is significant, the character of each beach changes dramatically between high and low water. A cove that seems too small for a towel at noon might reveal a broad expanse of golden sand by late afternoon. Checking tide tables before setting out is a wise habit that locals practice instinctively.
Below is a curated selection of the finest beaches and coastal walks in and around Santander. Each entry has been chosen for its scenic quality, accessibility, and the distinct experience it offers, whether you are looking for a quick urban stroll or a half-day hike along untamed cliffs.

Honestly, this is the dream. We went to Santander just because we never been to a sea with cliffs, but I never expected of it to be such a nice place. Going down to this beach is surreal, when you are down there, it feels like your own piece of Paradise.
We arrived in the morning at the lighthouse that is a bit northwest of this beach, you can walk along the edge of the cliff, there is a path. Going east and climbing down a bit there is a huge park where there are plenty of places to sit and most importantly to park your car. Now when you go close to the beach you will notice soo many parking spots, like legit parking spots (this is to the left of the beach) and there are lots of trees for shade. You can park there and walk towards the beach, I won't forget the way the beach and cliffs unfolded while walking the designated path/sidewalk there, it's simply beautiful. There weren't too many tourists (compared to other hotspots in Spain), mostly locals and citizens of the country, we could only stay one day and slept in the car in one of the parking lots in walking distance, there were other people who did the same and I've felt very safe. We went in August and it was very warm during noon and afternoon, then a bit colder in the night, in the summer it was very comfortable compared to the 40+C° we had at home. We only saw one public toilet, it was free to enter but being the only toilet in quite a large area you can imagine it was not the best, tho there was someone coming to clean it a few times per day, also important to note that it was closed during the night, we stayed one day and one night and we only went in a few times, but it's definitely something to be aware of and plan in advance if you wish to stay longer periods of time.
We didn't go far into the city, but we wanted to visit one of the other longer beaches but we could not find parking there at about 4pm. Once you go in the city more there is less shade and more busy which is understandable I guess. We did go to a kid park nearby which was kinda nice.
If you visit Spain you need to go to Santander for sure, I wish we skipped other places to stay there more. No photos will do it justice, there is a reason this beach is rated so high.

Great for long walks and camping nearby. Public toilet tend to be not in Service, but you can always use the nearest bar behind the main car park, which is enormous

It a very beautiful sandy beach in a small natural bay. The gradient is slow and water not rough. This allows enjoying the beach easily on any sunny day. Spent an hour or so at the beach during recent visit there. However, there is a steep climb back through stairs which must be taken note of while visiting the beach.
The Frameshifter★★★★★
Wonderful secondary and hidden beach in Santander. The beach is inside a cove with high rocks on the sides and can only be reached on foot after a steep staircase, there is a car park nearby however because it is about 30 minutes walk from the centre of Santander. Despite the isolation there are always lifeguards. The water is wonderful and clean, the tide is very strong and I had the honour of visiting it in bad weather but it was hot and there was fog on the water; amazing and it was June. As you can understand it is never too crowded and is always majestic.
MMA FANATIK★★★★☆
Its a good beach but you need ro know that you have to climb the stairs afterwards. If that is not a issue then this is beach is all right.

A stunning beach with a fascinating natural spectacle
Playa Virgen del Mar in Santander is a beautiful and relatively unspoilt beach, but what makes it truly special is the incredible tidal phenomenon that plays out over the course of the day. Watching the beach fill completely with water at high tide and then reveal itself again as the tide recedes is a mesmerising and almost surreal experience, hard to believe until you see it with your own eyes. The golden sand, clean water and dramatic cliffs framing the bay make it one of the most scenic spots on the Cantabrian coast. It tends to be quieter than nearby beaches which adds to the appeal. Access requires a bit of a walk but that is precisely what keeps the crowds away. A genuinely unique natural experience well worth the visit.

A very nice beach. It has some facilities, showers for example. Water is cold, but clean. There is large parking place and two bars next to the beach.

Very busy but was peak season. Clean but dated facilities. We we're lucky with the spot we got but the pitches are very small. Not much privacy. Next to a beach, nice walks. Expensive in comparison to some cheaper nicer places that we stayed but convenient for the ferry port.

Nice place in particular off-season and on weekdays, when nearly none is here.

Very disappointed. Been coming for a few years, place is now very tired and in need of an upgrade but they are still charging full very high price but not providing the better amenities eg no hotwater at sinks in shower block, so ok for teeth cleaning but not shaving nor face washing. 3 out of the ladies 6 showers had minor broken elements, door locks missing, shower head broken etc staff simply not interested. No room for clothes or wash bags. Pitches are very small and close together. While we were there this week, large concert in adjoining fields and staff lied when we expressed concern said it was one night and until 12am. It was in fact an allnighter and on for two days. Place was full of teensgers in tents, however, lucky for us, they behaved beautifully if a little loud when drunk. Still no sleep, concert was so loud the plates and glasses rattled with the bass beat from the rave music. No discount, booked for 7 nights but left after two. As did everyone else. Place was almost empty as you can see from the pictures, height of season and empty. So so sad and ridiculously high price for pretty substandard amenities. Great position near port of Santander and nice beach. I'm sad to be writing this negative post. But we will not be going back. 😔

A glorious beach with a lot of amenities and supermarkets close by. It has a diverse crowd without too much music or overly quiet. The surrounding area is gorgeous and there are sunbeds if you feel you need one. The sand is gorgeous, the sea is choppy but gradual so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
A very nice hub for people to meet and get some beach time in. I wouldn’t miss this if you are in Santander, probably my favourite area!

Beautiful beach that looks like a postcard. I went in October when it wasn't crowded at all. Because it's so amazing, expect crowds during the peak season.

Wonderful atmosphere and view! Beautiful beach with easy access to restaurants and drinks! Walkable... good vibes.

Low tide in the morning, high tide in the afternoon. All the beaches are connected so you can make a good stroll back and forth.

We enjoyed this beach area on the Cantabrian Sea in Santander. There is a lovely promenade and walkway along the beach. It has sand (not pebbles) and is flat which is great for walking. It can be quite busy, but as the beach is 80m wide there is plenty of room.

A beach in the Sardinero area, towards the far end, near Magdalena Park, with the same characteristics as all the beaches in this area. Fine sand, wide, well-maintained, with lifeguards, and a few restaurants. A good place overall to enjoy the beach, take a swim, or play beach tennis.

At the end of the beach there's a terrace, a nice place, the only downside is that the showers didn't have water, I don't know if it's because we haven't entered the peak summer season yet

Very worth the visit. The round-trip ferry is not very expensive (free for your dog). The beach is amazing, not crowded at all, beautiful and peaceful. Water is quite cold, but we had a great time with our dog
Mark Hamilton★★★★★
If you’re spending more than one night in Santander, this ferry service is definitely worthwhile. We have often looked over to the sandy peninsula on the other side of the bay and wondered what it would be like. This ferry to the other side only takes 10 minutes and - whether to walk or sunbathe - the beach is fabulous. We didn’t try the chiringuito next to the landing pier - but its there if refreshment needed.

Its very long so there's almost always a place without people where you can chill. I recomend going when its windy, because there are some decent waves then.

Fantastic beach! One of the best I’ve been to in all of Spain, only a short boat ride from central Santander.

Much quieter than Santander's main beaches but no showers. Water a lot warmer though out of the wind on the restaurant side. Just busier due to boat traffic. Doesn't appear to be accessible any way other than by the ferry.

Gorgeous little beach just down the hill from our hotel. The water felt amazing! People were lounging, enjoying the water and playing some sort of padel game. Iconic sand beach of Santander, source of the famous sardines of the Cantabrian capital. Despite the sardines fishing ground can't be found anymore, the joyful spirit of those days can be felt on this wide sand beach. The view of Magdalena palace on the right side and the posh Somo beach in the other bank of the Bay create a unique ecletic atmosphere. Really difficult to park around in Summer.

Santander city is ugly, dirty and haotic but this park makes up for it. Views are spectacular. Great place to hike, run, walk, bike, come with children or dogs.
M.Y.Voyage★★★★☆
It is nice for a walking, the view is amazing of course. But, for children is a bit bored I think, just walking, not many other things to do. Lucky, we saw the hare family. There were three or four, played around the grassland, winter, cloudy day, fewer people, they looked very relaxed, happy, enjoying their homeland. That made this place more interesting for Mei🤭

More than just a walk, this is a journey through the memory and beauty of Cantabria. It is a place to breathe deeply and feel time stand still in front of the bay. Walking here, you witness how the stately elegance of 19th-century buildings (which miraculously survived the 1941 fire) coexists with the architecture of the future. However, to understand the true soul of Santander, the mandatory stop, right on the seafront and just steps away from the avant-garde Centro Botín and the historic Stone Crane, is the Los Raqueros monument (see my review). This set of four statues pays tribute to the homeless children of the 19th and 20th centuries, who were a common and moving fixture of Santander's past.

Santander is considered a city and actually one of the most important cities of north of Spain, but to be honest, this is like a big town very cute full of culture with not the best weather but very, very beautiful.
I would say one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, my wife and I were road tripping in the north of Spain and made this one of our stops we spend the day and it was very fun.

Practical Tips for Exploring Santander’s Coast
A little preparation goes a long way when exploring this stretch of the Cantabrian coast. The Atlantic weather can shift quickly, the terrain varies from paved promenades to rocky paths, and the rhythm of the tides shapes the entire shoreline experience. The following tips are drawn from local knowledge and years of walking these routes in every season.
First, always carry a light waterproof layer, even on sunny mornings. Sea fog and sudden drizzle are common, especially on the western headlands. Second, wear shoes with proper grip if you plan to walk beyond the main promenades, as limestone rocks become slippery when damp. Third, check the tide schedule before visiting smaller coves, as some are completely submerged at high water. Fourth, use the excellent local bus network to create linear walks rather than retracing your steps, particularly between El Sardinero and Cabo Mayor. Fifth, bring binoculars if you have them, as the headlands offer excellent seabird watching and occasional dolphin sightings. Sixth, respect the fragile dune and cliff vegetation by staying on marked paths, which also protects you from unstable edges. Finally, consider timing your walk to finish near one of the beachfront cafés at El Sardinero, where a coffee or a cold drink tastes better with sand between your toes.
The beauty of Santander’s coastline is that it rewards both the casual stroller and the serious hiker. You can spend twenty minutes walking the promenade or an entire afternoon tracing the cliffs westward toward the lighthouse, and both experiences feel complete. The city’s compact size means you are never far from a bus stop, a café, or a place to rest your legs.
What lingers after exploring these beaches and paths is not just the scenery but the feeling of having discovered a coastline that remains true to itself. Santander does not need to shout about its natural assets. It simply lets the Atlantic do the talking, one wave, one cliff, and one golden stretch of sand at a time.
