Finding the perfect café is about more than just caffeine. It is about the atmosphere, the quality of the roast, the texture of the milk, and the feeling of belonging. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the coffee culture has evolved dramatically over the last decade, moving far beyond the standard Spanish café con leche.
Today, the capital of Tenerife boasts a vibrant scene filled with specialty roasters, minimalist Nordic-inspired spaces, and traditional Canarian institutions. Whether you are a digital nomad needing reliable Wi-Fi or a tourist seeking the perfect barraquito, this city has a seat waiting for you.
Navigating the labyrinth of streets in the center can be overwhelming if you do not know where to look. You might walk past a nondescript door only to miss the best flat white on the island. Conversely, you might settle for a tourist trap when a local gem is just around the corner.
This guide is curated with a focus on quality, consistency, and atmosphere. We have considered the sourcing of the beans, the skill of the baristas, and the comfort of the seating. It is designed to help you avoid the average and find the exceptional.
From the bustling streets near Calle Castillo to the quieter corners of the El Toscal neighborhood, the options are diverse. Some spots excel in breakfast, while others are better suited for an afternoon of remote work or a quick espresso at the bar.
To help you plan your caffeine-fueled itinerary, we have compiled a definitive list of the best places to visit right now. We have focused on venues that offer a genuine experience rather than just a quick sugar rush.
Here is where you should be drinking coffee in the capital.

Lovely café with a great selection of coffee and tea.
The music playlist was great, and there’s plenty of natural light, which makes the space feel really pleasant. The Wi-Fi was also a nice bonus.
The only downside was that I arrived around 2pm and they had already run out of at least four dishes, and the second floor was closed. A bit disappointing, but overall still a nice spot with a good atmosphere!

This is one of the greatest restaurant/coffee shops on the entire island of Tenerife. I recently came back to Tenerife after 5 years of being away and discovered La Escala this time around. I spent more than half of my vacation frequenting this gem of a place, sometimes returning twice in one day. Not only are the people who work there lovely human beings, but the food and coffee are absolutely divine. Just pick anything on the menu, and it will be fantastic. The seating areas are also very inviting, and the open doors and windows create a peaceful and lovely connection to the streets of Tenerife as you enjoy your food. What a gem of a place. Thank you to all who work there and for all that you do. I recommend this spot to everyone who comes to Tenerife.

A cosy little place in the city center. High-quality coffee, a wide selection of sandwiches and other light meals (a huge variety of vegetarian and vegan options - fatteh was our fav.) The service was friendly and the whole place had a good atmosphere. They had two types of roasted coffee and asked us which one we wanted our drinks made from. The prices are typical for a specialty coffee shop.

TLDR; yummy foods with creative twists, nice coffees, good vegetarian/vegan selections, and friendly service!
We went here for lunch and some coffee. Other than the nice selection coffees, they also have great selections of sandwiches, salads, and main dishes.
I really recommend to give their tuna tartare a try! Overall, their foods are delicious and with some creative twists on the local dishes. They also offer some tasty desserts and cookies.
The service was great too, everyone was friendly and warm. We definitely recommend this place and would love to come again 🙂

Stopped by just for coffee, and everyone seemed to enjoy their drinks. The interior is very cosy and nicely done.
We also ordered the banana dessert, which had a unique presentation, but unfortunately, I wasn’t a fan of the taste.

We visited Pianeta creperie today and it was a fantastic experience. The food was delicious, but what truly made our visit special was Ms. Norma. She was incredibly kind and professional, providing top-tier service. We will definitely be back!🍀🍀🍀

Nice little cafe/creperie in central Santa Cruz. Came here for a quick dinner on Monday night. We were seated and waited a bit for our order to be taken. Service was friendly but a bit slow as it started to get busy. The atmosphere was nice. Foo was typical Spanish tapas, and we also ordered a couple of their sandwiches. The Canarian cheese toast was good, and the toast with salmon was also very nice. The iberian ham croquettes were very crispy and delicious.

Cool vibe, feels very local…
I dunno why almost all the cafe in Tenerife is very sweet and almost all are steaming the milk more thank 90 degrees. The latte was super hot!
The pancakes are good!
The stuff was very friendly!

I will start by saying that the crepes ordered were delicious. However the service was appalling. After waiting about 10 minutes outside I ventured in and politely asked if it was table service or should I order at the counter. I was met with an abrupt, unintelligible answer, so retreated outside to await someone taking the order assuming that was what he'd said.
From then on the service went downhill with the man taking our order, but apparently not paying attention as when a crepe was ordered that was not available he marched off without giving my friend a second chance. I politely called him back to allow my friend to complete his order. He attempted to take away a half full bottle of water and cursed when I pointed out that we hadn't finished it.
When he delivered the food I attempted to request another coffee (how naive, but I'ma trier), but although he quite clearly heard me he chose to ignore me.
Ill mannered and extremely ignorant man.
However, the crepes were good 🤷

The most gorgeous cafe! You can see why it's so popular and hard to get a table. I've visited several times and all the cakes I've tried were fantastic - but my top recommendation is the hazelnut caramel hot chocolate! Heavenly. A sweet tooth's dream!

We visited this cozy place and were absolutely delighted! We tried the local coffee — carajillo and barraquito special — absolutely delicious! ☕ The desserts were tasty, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Lovely atmosphere — we’ll definitely come back! 💛

Variety menu options! Egg benedict croissant with salmon was so good 🙂 so many options for the beverages and desserts.
Moreover, the staff was so friendly and spoke good english. They even prepared candles on the cake for my friend’s birthday! Thank you so much for the experience~!

I was expecting a bit more due to the google comments but I guess I've chosen cake which was just ok.
I guess the other cakes taste better, mine was a bit dry...
I ordered strawberry cake and matcha latte.
Although personel speaks Spanish only, I was replying in English, we managed to understand each other.
Today, Nov 29 2025, I gave another chance ti this place to try a cake, this time Chocolate zacher and it was so-so, very sweet and crumbling, I've tried better ones.
Coffee Barraquito, super nice.
Staff - very serious 🙁 Curly haired lady seems "simpatic" but always serious
Ole Gray★★★★☆
Most of the tables are outside; there are only a few inside and they’re usually occupied. The counter and display case are inside. The staff are quite slow, so if you sit outside you may have to wait a long time. Expensive, but the atmosphere and coffee is good, and the cakes are good too.
It’s located on a pedestrian street, so it’s easier to park in the paid parking lots at the beginning or the end of the street.

Absolutely amazing coffee, toasted sandwiches and sponge cakes at very reasonable prices

Café Regina in Tenerife was one of the worst experiences I’ve had on the island. Hygiene is clearly not a priority here. I ordered a cappuccino and, without even touching it, noticed the cup was dirty. Absolutely unacceptable – I left it standing because who knows if that cup had ever been properly washed.
The disappointment didn’t end there. I ordered a croissant with vanilla filling, and it was served on a plate smeared with some mysterious brown substance. They might claim it was chocolate, but I honestly didn’t want to find out. It looked unhygienic and unappetizing.
The staff seemed careless, uninterested, and far from professional. Overall, this place gives off the impression that cleanliness doesn’t matter at all.
This review is simply a warning for tourists: Café Regina is not a place where you should risk your health. More hygiene inspections are desperately needed here. Tenerife has plenty of lovely cafés – but this is definitely not one of them.

On a Sunday many places were closed but this seemed worth a shot. Glad I went. The QR code has multilingual menu which is great. Staff nice and attentive. Food was great, the shredded pork was somewhat salty but not in a bad way, had lots of flavor, it balanced well with the plain rice and beans. Normally I'd add salt to rice and beans but didn’t need it. Worth the stop!

A Must-Visit Dining Experience in Santa Cruz!
If you're looking for top-quality steaks, this place is second to none. While their menu offers a great selection of dishes, the side dishes that accompany the mains are just as delicious and well-crafted.
The restaurant is located on a charming pedestrian street, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the authentic Spanish/Canary atmosphere. The setting is relaxed and inviting, perfect for both a leisurely lunch and an unforgettable evening meal.
A standout feature is the modern playground nearby, which ensures that kids stay entertained while parents enjoy their meal in peace. Whether you're a visitor or a local, this spot is a must-try in Santa Cruz—perfect for any time of day!

A little disappointing experience. There was a queue and the staff was very unpleasant. There were clean available tables inside but because of unstructured staff, we had to wait outside for 10 mins anyway to then get the table that was free from the beginning…
The service was slow but when we ordered the food arrived quite quickly.
The pancakes were disappointing - bacon good, eggs average, the pancakes not good. The tasted like pancakes from some bought box dough. Very sweet and artificial.
The avo toast with jamon and extra was really good and my partner enjoyed it.
We also had protein smoothie and lemonade - okay.
It was busy and quite loud, there was a lot of employees but they were neither attentive nor nice.
There are two bathrooms, one lacked toilet paper. Hand towels would be nice.

What a great find. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Santa Cruz is this café/bar.
Initially we nearly walked past as we were taking a stroll away from the main road. There were a few tables outside, I checked the menu and saw some interesting things and at good prices. This was early lunchtime. Inside is really quirky, upstairs is even more quirky. There are new and old photos on the walls, the colours are fun. There are little alcoves with tables for more intimate dining. The staff are friendly and speak a multitude of languages. There is a roof terrace too.
We sat outside and had a snack and a drink. I had a steakhouse roll, which was succulent and flavoursome. My husband had a chicken baguette full of flavour. I was tempted to have a luxurious looking cake but declined. Next time for sure. We didn't have any alcohol on this occasion! Next time! For the both of us with snack and drink we paid €10!
I will definitely be coming here again. I can imagine in the evening there is a really good buzz.

Good Plates, Room to Improve. The food here does its job well — solid, enjoyable, and reliably good. The décor follows suit: decent, pleasant, and unlikely to offend or astonish anyone. It’s a comfortable place to sit and eat, which is already half the battle.
Service, however, lags behind the kitchen. Nothing disastrous, just a little inattentive and uneven, leaving you feeling slightly less looked after than you’d expect given the quality coming out of the back.
In short: come for the food, stay because you’re already seated — and hope the service catches up to what’s on the plate.

It has now been over three respectively two years since we visited KonKalma for the first respectively for the second time. Today, I finally get around to writing a review.
We didn't order anything specific from the menu, but told the waiter that we just wanted several courses of small Venezuelan tapas. That was a great decision, because we were served delicious tapas, most of which were completely new taste experiences for us. The staff was extremely friendly, and you really felt like you were being served by hosts for whom this job is not just a job, but a calling.
We can only recommend that everyone try Konkalma for themselves to experience the great Venezuelan cuisine and friendly service.

Cute little café with a nice atmosphere. However, we had to wait about 20 minutes for the coffee and 30 minutes for the food, which felt quite long. The dishes were rather bland and lacked flavor. Considering that the food was not very memorable, the prices felt too high for the overall experience.
Sophie Regazzoni★★★★★
We went here twice for breakfast as it was close to our hotel.
We had to wait a bit for our cachapas, but only because they are made freshly. It was as tasty as you can see on the pics!
They are also super friendly. We wanted to go for dinner as well but we travelled in winter so was a bit cold it is only outdoor.
But we recommend 100%
Soren Rahbar★★★★☆
The cappuccino was very delicious and the Cafe has a calm and positive atmosphere.
The only problem was that it took too much to get what you ordered. It took about 10-15 minutes for the lady to finally take my order. After 20 minutes I got my coffee and the croissant came even 10 minutes later, which I could not accept it, because my coffee was already cold. If they can manage the time and orders better, It could be one of the best cafe in the city.

Amazing breakfast sandwiches and healthy smoothies for a very fair and good price ! We had breakfast here during our visit to Santa Cruz in January 2021 ! Tips for Enjoying the Café Scene in Santa Cruz
While finding a great café is half the battle, knowing how to navigate the local customs and logistics can significantly enhance your experience. The coffee culture here has its own rhythm, distinct from mainland Spain or other European capitals. Understanding the timing of the day, the local specialties, and the practicalities of working remotely will ensure you blend in seamlessly and get the most out of every visit.
1. Embrace the Local Specialty: The Barraquito
While you can find excellent specialty espresso in Santa Cruz, you should not leave without trying a barraquito. This layered Canarian drink typically consists of condensed milk, Licor 43, espresso, steamed milk, and cinnamon. It is sweet, strong, and visually stunning, served in a glass to show off the distinct layers. Many of the traditional cafes on the list serve the best versions of this iconic drink.
2. Understand the Breakfast Window
Unlike Northern Europe, breakfast in Tenerife is often a lighter, later affair. Many cafes do not hit their peak morning rush until 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM. If you are looking for a quiet coffee and a pastry, arriving right at opening time is wise. However, if you want to experience the lively local chatter and see the city wake up, aim for mid-morning.
3. Check Wi-Fi and Laptop Policies
If you plan to work remotely, not every café is suitable. While many modern specialty shops welcome laptops, some traditional or smaller venues prefer a "no laptop" policy during peak lunch hours to turn tables quickly. It is always best to check the venue’s social media or ask the staff politely before setting up a full office. Look for spots with ample seating and power outlets if you plan to stay for hours.
4. Look for Local Roasters
Tenerife has a growing reputation for coffee roasting due to its unique climate and trade routes. Several cafes on this list roast their own beans or source them from local Canarian roasters. Opting for a bag of locally roasted beans to take home is not only a great souvenir but also supports the local economy and reduces the carbon footprint of your cup.
5. Combine Coffee with Architecture
Santa Cruz is a city of contrasts, blending brutalist architecture with colonial charm. Many of the best cafes are located in beautifully restored buildings or feature striking modern interior design. Do not rush your coffee; take a moment to look up at the ceilings, the tiling, and the design details. The visual environment is often half the reason these specific locations have become so beloved by locals and visitors alike.
The café scene in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a reflection of the city itself: warm, unpretentious, and increasingly sophisticated. Whether you are starting your day with a strong espresso before exploring the Auditorio de Tenerife or winding down with a sweet barraquito after shopping, the right café can anchor your entire experience.
Take your time, chat with the baristas, and do not be afraid to try something new. In a city that bridges Europe, Africa, and the Americas, the coffee is a delicious reminder that you are in a truly unique part of the world.
