Standing on the edge of a dramatic limestone gorge, the Hanging Houses of Cuenca are among Spain’s most surreal architectural treasures. These cantilevered balconies, known locally as the Casas Colgadas, seem to defy gravity as they cling precariously to the rock face above the Huécar River. For travelers planning a visit, the location of your accommodation can make or break the experience of exploring this UNESCO World Heritage city.
Cuenca is not a sprawling metropolis; it is a compact, vertical medieval labyrinth where walking is not just recommended but necessary. Choosing a hotel close to the Hanging Houses means you can experience the magic of the old town at dawn, before the day-trippers arrive from Madrid, and linger after dark when the illuminated facades reflect off the gorge.
However, "close" in Cuenca can be relative due to the steep topography. A hotel that looks 200 meters away on a map might require a significant uphill climb or a descent down ancient stone steps. The best locations balance proximity to the landmark with accessibility to the Plaza Mayor and the modern lower town.
This guide focuses on properties that offer the highest value, comfort, and authenticity while keeping you within a reasonable walking distance of the Casas Colgadas. We have evaluated these hotels based on guest reviews, historical significance, amenities, and their actual walking distance to the gorge viewpoint.
Whether you are looking for a restored 16th-century convent, a contemporary boutique design hotel, or a budget-friendly hostal with character, Cuenca offers a range of sleep-worthy options. Staying in the historic center allows you to absorb the city’s artistic spirit, famously tied to the abstract art museum located inside the Hanging Houses themselves.
Before we dive into the specific recommendations, it is worth noting that parking in the old town is heavily restricted. If you are driving, you will want to select a hotel that offers parking access or clear instructions on reaching the nearest public lot.
With that in mind, here are the standout choices for your stay near this iconic Spanish landmark.

We booked from booking we are here right now. First thing the room is not like the photos they put us in one room that you need lander to reach the windows, the internet slow comes and leaves all the time and the worst at 00:00 at night ? They have machines somehow hiding behind the closet and makes incredible noise like we are in a plane!!!

We loved this hotel. It is very atmospheric. The setting was pretty. The staff were very nice. We were lucky enough to get upgraded to a lovely room with great views. The price was fantastic too (we went out of season). I enjoyed the swimming pool and it’s only a short beautiful drive to the centre of Cuenca. I’d definitely go back.
Amélie Berrut★★☆☆☆
It could have been a great experience because the hotel must have been beautiful back in the days. Now it has become old. A part from the lobby that is really beautiful, The rooms are dirty and old. The heat does not work properly (I slept with my clothes on!). And the rooms are very poorly soundproofed. The staff is not really friendly (prepare to not see any smile). Anyway, the low price is the positive thing about this hotel.
Amanda Donnelley★★☆☆☆
The rooms was a good size, steep stairs to three twin beds. The bathroom was nice and big and the shower was the best thing at this property. We had no WiFi they said they contacted a tech but he wasn’t coming until later the next day. The a/c unit leaked all over the floor.
The check in gave us no information
We went and explored the grounds as the kids wanted to do some outdoors stuff. The mini golf was no useable the fake grass was pull off and or ruined on most of the holes and it was so dirty and filled with weeds. This is the same for most of the outside areas. The sand volleyball was weed volleyball. The basketball court was not usable. They had a tennis court and paddle court that looked ok but could use a clean. The pool was getting filled with water so it was t open (end of April)
The breakfast was all cold and nothing fresh.
The property was 10-15 min away from Cuenca
We left a day early

lovely location, staff in general were lovely particularly on reception, food service staff lacked skills and knowledge. the shower in our room was not fully functional which was aggravating.
The real disappointment was the food in the restaurant at night, the fillet of Iberian pork and a steak were really tough, making the experience hugely disappointing, At breakfast fried eggs and scrambled eggs all cooked off at 8.30am and not changed as morning moved on even when asked.
In fairness when I complained about the shower, and food refunds were given,

Exceptional Stay, Disappointing Dinner Service
The exceptional service and wonderful food I experienced at the restaurant last year made me decide to stay here on my return to Cuenca.
Thank you very much for the complimentary upgrade to the twin room with a view. The view from Room 13 is truly stunning! I stayed for 3 nights. The room was clean, very comfortable, and the front desk and housekeeping staff were all very kind. I absolutely loved the accommodation!
However, my high expectations for dinner were not met.
The service started with a language barrier, as the waitress could not find my reservation. I tried hard to guess what she meant, and eventually figured out she was asking for my room number. When I said 'thirteen,' she couldn't understand, so I showed her my room key, and she finally got it.
The meal itself didn't seem as good as last year; I didn't even finish the bread.
Finally, when she asked what dessert I wanted, I replied, 'No, thanks.' She actually responded with a high-pitched 'NO!?' Her reaction was very rude. Every country has people who like and dislike desserts, and her response was completely unprofessional. She also did not smile once the entire time. While I understand she doesn't speak English, a smile is an international language and the most basic requirement in the service industry. I don't speak Spanish, but I made an effort to smile throughout our entire interaction while trying to understand her.
I was originally looking forward to dining here for my entire stay, but this experience made me unwilling to return. However, I might have to thank her, because I found another hotel restaurant that was absolutely fantastic. I even asked the waitress there to make a reservation for me for the next day. That waitress also didn't speak English, but she kept smiling and trying her best to understand me.

The restaurant and food is good. The thing we didn’t like is a blonde hair waitress with big bright lips was very very mean. We were 4 and she didn’t want to give us table even though they had 2 free tables. We were lucky that other waiters except her were friendly and gave us a table finally.

Gorgeous, ancient building. Lots of steps, stunning views, not for those who don't like heights. Our room was a bit dates, the towels passed there best but very clean and confortable.

It dish doesn’t look much but - WOW 😮- it’s sooo goood. Iberico bellota!!
Outside the view is 🤩.
If you want a very special experience- go here!!!
The scallops was also very good but the 🍤 shrimps did not taste anything…
The restaurant is very romantic and the staff/service is the best 🥳

Great service in the restaurant. Affable front desk clerk. Location is excellent for exploring the town— just steps from the Plaza Mayor. The rooms have air conditioning but it is not potent enough to keep up with the summer heat.

The location is perfect for exploring the town. The room was simple but clean, and the service was very friendly. This is a straightforward hotel, but you get fantastic value for your money. A huge plus that there is a parking garage just 3–4 minutes away. Highly recommended!

What can I say? The best hotel stay I’ve ever had. The staff made it feel like home, everyday they remembered our names and smiled and made us feel so special. The rooms are so antique and gorgeous, very Spaniard style. We made incredible friends at this hotel and want to stay here every time we go back to Cuenca. You can walk absolutely everywhere and this city is so amazing, I have never seen a place like this. 10/10 recommend
Marc★★★★☆
Very nice hotel. Beautiful rooms. Decent price. GREAT location. The rooms at the front of the hotel, lower level are very noisy from the cars and buses that pass through this narrow street. After sitting in bath after a long day it drove me nuts and we asked to change rooms which they super kindly did for us. The new room was super quiet and beautiful again. Our gratitude to the nice staff.

Loved the corner room I stayed, the views were nice to wake up to. I wouldn't necessarily call it 4* hotel, but character, location, cleanliness and the staff definitely make it worth the price. Recommend it.

I wouldn't have enough space to write good things about this place! First surprise: Location! in the center of Cuenca (old town) the convenient access from the public parking, to the Hospederia only a few yards FLAT. No stairs. The smell when you arrive is CLEAN. The staff, super kind, professional, polite, and they took their time to explain all the activities we could visit in Cuenca. Breakfast was amazing and beyond! Excellent is not enough. Highly recommend this place. Thank you.

A wonderfully peaceful place to stay in Cuenca Old Town. The room was very comfortable and the building is a still an active seminary with quiet spaces to sit and enjoy the surroundings. So convenient for visiting Cathedral etc and parking system the hotel uses is excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast good. Really enjoyed the stay.

What an amazing place. Everything was perfect, location, staff all so helpful, breakfast was homemade and wonderful. The seminary had a perfect ambience and so quiet. We absolutely loved this place and highly recommend it.

The location, historicity, views, and beauty of many of the interior features of this lodging really impressed us. Our room, though small, was well-designed, spotlessly clean, and afforded us a marvelous view of the gorge and adjacent mountain. We also appreciated the local breads and pastries that were on offer at breakfast.
The good breakfast would be an even better one were the establishment to provide some freshly cut vegetables, or, even, olives, pickles, etc.

Loved our time staying here! In a cute little village outside if Cuenca. We had an amazing few days in the little cottage. A cozy place, meticulously cared for, and with everything you need for a comfortable and peaceful stay.
The air conditioning, cleanliness, comfortable bed, and surroundings make it the perfect place to unwind. The shared pool is a bonus, with a very relaxing atmosphere and hardly any noise.
We especially want to highlight Paola's attentiveness; she was always friendly and helpful.
A highly recommended experience. We can't wait to come back!
Paula Sanchez Martin★★★★★
We stayed in the small cottage, and the experience was incredible.
A cottage like this should have air conditioning, mosquito nets, a comfortable bed, and everything should be in good condition and clean; Paola and Mario have managed to provide it all.
In this case, the small cottage meets absolutely all the requirements for a few days of relaxation.
The shared pool is lovely; you can hardly hear any noise.
Of course, we must highlight Paola's attentiveness at all times.
100% recommended, and we can't wait to return!

My 10/10 to this beautiful villa. Throughout the year I usually book villas like this for a few days to disconnect from work with my dog... and honestly, it's one of the best in terms of value for money and the owner's hospitality. The area is super quiet and everything is close by. A lovely, helpful, and attentive woman, quick to answer all my questions on WhatsApp (I personally asked her many things and she answered everything quickly and very pleasantly). She answers any question and is incredibly attentive. It's hard to find something like this; I usually book places once a month and there's always something missing, but in this one in particular, I didn't lack anything! A wonderful pool, incredible cleanliness inside the little house, very cozy, with a very cool breeze inside. I was so surprised! These days, prices are outrageous for disconnecting in something as wonderful and simple as this. And without a doubt, because of its proximity and excellent service, I will return! And I highly recommend it! Super happy with the experience! I only spent one night and I'm already wishing I could come back for a whole weekend!

Mixed feelings. Excellent location 10/10. We had a room with stunning view over the valley. Friendly staff. But everything feels a bit cheap, worn out and neglected. They probably have no maintenance staff to keep the hotel 100% but only repair the really broken stuff. If the rooms etc. where 100% they could ask twice the price.
Ian.H Foster★★★★☆
Had a nice few days here, food is adequate as we're the rooms ,we had a nice view over the cuenca valley.
The walk around the old town is strenuous but very interesting, very photographic. We didn't enjoy the tram ride!
Would be better one way drop off to see the town, then catch it later to return. Driver seemed bored!
Nathan Milliot★★★☆☆
Convenient hotel, cheap, extremely well situated, and calm. You should ask for the rooms with view - first of all the view is splendid, and second it's calm (whereas the street side is a bit noisy at times).
You should rather avoid the breakfast. The restaurant (not the bar-cafeteria, the real restaurant) is good. The cafeteria is good for a drink, and offers cheap (but rather mediocre) food.
Good value for money, all in all.
Elsa Perez★★★★☆
Cozy and nice hotel in the historic part of Cuenca. Generous and good breakfast with lots of options. Staff very nice and helpful. Rooms are spacious and clean. Perfectly working central heating. Mattresses could be a tad more comfortable, though.
Jakub Janarek★★★★☆
Amazing views from the deluxe rooms. Clean, modern, but the tortilla in the breakfast buffet was watery, probably the worst I've eaten. So hotel yes 100%, breakfast buffet so-so.
However, I'm sure it's one of the best hotels if not the best one in the price/quality ratio in Cuenca.

We had a great gateway at this parador. Location is breathtaking, it's been recently refurbished so it's all cute while keeping the authentic style. We had dinner in the courtyard with live classic music, very romantic and peaceful. Also worth to mention that they had gluten free options. Only the pool area hasn't been really updated so bit of shame but that's a detail. Would definitely come back!

Great location to walk into Cuenca. Rooms were large, spacious and comfortable, also very clean. Tea and coffee facilities in the room. Beautiful location with a relaxing courtyard for drinks. Staff were welcoming. Check in and check out was smooth and easy. Ensure you visit Cuenca as the church there is beautiful and well worth a visit.

What a beautiful hotel!
So very memorable and lovely. The location is beautiful, the rooms are great, lovely service. Romantic stay.
Only thing I would say is they need more sun loungers at the pool.

Marcus Hurley★★★★☆
The Parador at Cuenca is a converted monastery separated from the medieval city by a 100m long iron bridge over the gorge. This was a shock to me, and I mean a real shock as I absolutely hate heights. We parked outside the Parador (25 euros a night) and checked in then went to our rooms, large and spacious. The building itself was fabulous with original wooden ceilings, stonework and frescoes.
Our room overlooked the gorge which was quite a spectacular site. Breakfast at the Parador was fabulous, I say 'breakfast' as a throw away word but this was a veritable feast and we were there for over an hour before another walk outside to view the town from this side of the ravine. I did feel vindicated when I read the information board that said the bridge, built in 1903, was only intended as a temporary measure before something more permanent was made. So this 'temporary' bridge has been in use for 123 years and is probably about to suffer imminent collapse!
Check in at the Parador was very pleasant although in the evening we rang reception twice to request a taxi with no answer. There is actually a pool there too although it is across the road with no sign to say it is there or belongs to the Parador. Although the building and breakfast were superb, I think when I return to the city I will stay the other side of the gorge to avoid the bridge.
Erik Arveschoug★★★★★
This is an incredibly beautiful and lucky parador. The setting couldn’t be more aesthetic. The interior is designed with really wonderful taste, and the views are unreal. We did unfortunately feel the service left a lot to be desired (restaurant + cafe bar), they were not too busy yet we were always waiting to be attended and seeing other people get much better attention. My partner and I were about 30-50 years younger than the other guests, and it felt like there was prejudice towards us.

Had a very nice stay. The view of the canyon from the room and terrace was worth it. Beds are super comfortable. Rooms exceptionally clean. The rooms are very new in conveniences, but kept the old charm. Close to Plaza Major. Breakfast was a spread of continental type stuff - nothing special but for €5- can’t beat it.
Down side is that the desk isn’t always staffed, but Maria sort of does everything to help and is very helpful even if challenged with language barriers.

Hidden gem! If you enjoy a unique, quirky experience stay here. Incredible value for the privacy and facilities. Stayed here on the drive through from Spain to the UK with my Mum and dog. The beds are enormous. Bath, fireplace and private garden with pool so lovely. Perfect for dogs with pinewoods to walk in all around. The only downside was a lack of open restaurants when we arrived at 5pm on a Sunday. Good idea to bring food/ snacks as the restaurants in town didn’t open until 8pm. The hotel attendant was friendly and helpful and breakfast delivered to the room in the morning was such a treat! Will definitely be back. Thanks team!

Wonderful place for a romantic getaway! Situated in a calm natural environment, the accommodation offers all the luxury one might need to enjoy the time: private pool, outdoor space, jacuzzi, fireplace, TV, etc. Excellent breakfast, very nice and helpful staff. We definitely plan to be back.

Very nice quiet boutique hotel near Cuenca. We booked this place spontaneously as we had a few days off and wanted to go somewhere new. This hotel was a good option for us as we didn’t want to be in the city of Cuenca. The overall experience was nice and the people managing the place were very nice and helpful. The room we had was the Azahar that came with a private pool and Jacuzzi inside the room (I think all rooms have a Jacuzzi as standard). The room also had a fire place and a window above the bed which was nice. The breakfast was good and enough to get you going for the day but I would have liked to have more bread and perhaps served the condiments separate. The room itself is right next to reception which we thought would be noisy but we never saw anyone there during our time there. The room would be better maintained as there were some things that were a bit wonky but nothing that made us regret the stay. I would come again but probably book a different room as the others seem better. Would recommend if you want a romantic get away (the hotel is also Adults only) so its a good option for a couples trip.

Centrally located close to the hanging houses. Rooms are great for 2. Bathrooms are a bit old. You get perfectly hot water though. Breakfast is included so that’s great. It’s beside the road so you really can’t open the window that much otherwise you’ll hear cars and drunk folks at nigh.

This place is absolutely in the best location, very close to the bridge, the theater, restaurants and bars. The service was outstanding!!!, the lady that checked us in gave us a lot of very useful information about Cuenca and made our stay very pleasant.

Juan Carlos Pedraza De Santos★★★★☆
Sunday and Monday are holidays, and it's actually a comfortable and quiet place. The only downside is that if you have neighbors, you can hear the bathtub in your room, but otherwise it's a very well-equipped apartment. The upstairs neighbors have children...
clara antuña★★★★★
We went for a weekend, the apartment was great, there were four of us adults. The location was fantastic, right next to the river. It was very quiet at night, even though there were people out on the street. The old town is a bit of a climb... haha, we were sore! I highly recommend this accommodation.
Tere Diaz★★★★☆
Laura was very nice; we asked if we could check in early and she made sure we could. The apartment was next to the Huecar River, with the sound of the running water and ducks, which was really lovely. The only downside I see is that the street behind where our balcony was located was a bit crowded... but otherwise, it was quite close to the old town, and there were a lot of hills and stairs.
Essential Tips for Visiting the Hanging Houses of Cuenca
To make the most of your visit to the Hanging Houses and the surrounding old town, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The terrain is steep, the streets are narrow, and the best viewpoints are often unmarked. The following advice will help you navigate the area like a seasoned traveler rather than a first-time tourist.
-
Walk to the San Pablo Bridge for the Best Photo. The most iconic photograph of the Hanging Houses is not taken from directly in front of them, but from the iron and wood footbridge spanning the Huécar River. Cross the bridge to the Parador side for an unobstructed, postcard-perfect view of the balconies against the rock.
-
Wear Shoes with Strong Grip. The streets of Cuenca’s old town are paved with smooth, polished cobblestones that become incredibly slippery, especially after rain or morning dew. Fashionable leather-soled shoes are a hazard here; opt for rubber-soled trainers or hiking shoes.
-
Book Museum Tickets in Advance. The Hanging Houses are home to the Spanish Abstract Art Museum. While the exterior is free to view 24/7, the interior has limited capacity. During peak seasons (spring and autumn), time slots sell out quickly, so reserve your entry online before you arrive.
-
Stay for the Sunset and Night Lighting. The crowds thin out significantly after 5:00 PM. The best time to feel the magic of the gorge is during the "blue hour" just after sunset when the floodlights turn on and the rock face glows. If you stay at a nearby hotel, you can enjoy this without worrying about the drive home.
-
Take the Scenic Route Down to the River. Instead of walking back down the main road, look for the footpath that descends from the old town down to the banks of the Huécar River. Walking along the riverbed looking up at the houses gives you a terrifying and beautiful perspective on just how high they are.
Finding the right base in Cuenca transforms a simple sightseeing trip into an immersive historical experience. The city’s old town is remarkably quiet at night, offering a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the busy daytime crowds. Whether you choose a luxury parador overlooking the gorge or a cozy guesthouse tucked into a side street, staying within the medieval walls is the best way to appreciate this unique corner of Spain.
