12 Best Bakeries and Pastry Shops near the Sacré-Cœur Basilica

Standing on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Paris, but the surrounding neighborhood of Montmartre holds a different kind of treasure waiting to be discovered. Just beyond the bustling tourist crowds and portrait artists, a rich culinary landscape of flour, butter, and sugar is thriving in the narrow cobblestone streets. For anyone with a passion for authentic French baking, this hilltop district is a true paradise.

While the area is famous for its bohemian history and artistic legacy, the local food scene often gets overshadowed by the sheer visual drama of the basilica. However, stepping away from the main square reveals a world where traditional craftsmanship still reigns supreme. Here, bakers wake before dawn to perfect their sourdough, and pastry chefs meticulously layer delicate mille-feuille by hand.

The charm of seeking out a bakery near Sacré-Cœur lies in the contrast between the energetic tourist flow and the quiet dedication of the artisans working behind the scenes. You can escape the crowds, step into a warm, flour-dusted shop, and experience a slice of daily Parisian life. Whether you are looking for a flaky, buttery croissant or an elaborate, glazed fruit tart, this neighborhood delivers on every level.

Because the area is so heavily visited, it can be difficult to distinguish between genuine, high-quality institutions and overpriced tourist traps designed for quick turnover. The difference is usually found in the details: the shatter of a crust, the lamination of a pastry, or the aroma of caramelizing butter. Knowing where the locals go to buy their daily baguette is the key to unlocking an authentic culinary experience.

To help you navigate this gastronomic maze, we have compiled a curated list of the finest establishments within walking distance of the basilica. This selection prioritizes independent artisans, traditional recipes, and consistent quality over hype or social media trends. You will find everything from historic institutions that have served the neighborhood for decades to modern bakers pushing the boundaries of flavor.

Whether you plan to enjoy a pastry on a park bench overlooking the city or pack a baguette for a picnic on the Champs de Mars, these recommendations will elevate your visit. This guide ensures that your time in Montmartre is not just a visual feast, but a culinary one as well. Prepare your appetite and get ready to explore the sweet and savory soul of the 18th arrondissement.

Below, you will find the ultimate guide to the best bakeries and pastry shops located just steps from the Sacré-Cœur, ensuring you spend your calories only on the very best Paris has to offer.

The food was nice, but without any vegan options and the backery seems nice, too. I disliked the staff and the atmosphere. There is no seating whatsoever and very little space inside. Moreover, I went because I'm a huge miraculous fan (some series). But either way the staff was very unfriendly to me. Insead of consulting me or letting me choose what I wanted to eat out of all the delicious goods, I felt pressured. I was a tourist, but I can speak french, and even so I didn't quite catch the buying system. There was no line behind me either.

Such a fun place to go if you’re a fan of the show! They keep it very authentic and you wouldn’t know it’s anything special unless you know Miraculous Ladybug. I got the roulé cannelé and the kouign-amann and both were amazing!
Ioana Jitariu★★★★★
The quiche with broccoli and goat cheese was absolutely delicious! I also tried the strawberry éclair, and it was amazing, there was a lovely hint of mint that was super fresh and tasty.

It was exciting to see the building that inspired Marinette's house. We also tried three of their deserts when we got there. Staff were lovely, we didn't know French but they were so helpful. Deserts were amazing!! I tried the rhubarb one and my friends tried hazelnut and hazelnut cream ones. All of them were delicious

Great bakery. We got two eclairs and one croissant. Everything tasted good. The mango and the tiramisu eclairs were both a bit more expensive than the basics like chocolate but totally worth the price 👍 The staff was very patient in explaining us all the different flavors in detail. Overall, we had a great experience

Delicious pies and such friendly staff! An instant favourite of mine in Paris, and I’m disappointed it took me 3 trips to finally find this place. If you’re stopping for lunch and want only a slice of quiche, the options can be limited. Of the 4 options they offered, 3 of them had bacon, and as I don’t eat pork, I had to get the veggie one. It was still delicious (could have used more salt in my opinion) but I would have loved to try their curry chicken quiche. Their mirabelle plum tart was absolutely divine though. I could have eaten a whole one by myself. Sugary crust with tart fruit… I’m going to dream about it for a while lol. Their chocolate chip cookies are also tasty! No forks btw, you just pick it up and eat it like pizza 🙂

i never write reviews but i will for this... the crust of the quiche lorraine was still intact after carrying it around. the plum tart made me tear up a bit because it's just so good. the plum flavor is really fresh and the custard is so smooth! plus the crust on this one had a sort of caramelized sugar base. buy some tarts, bring it to the park next to the sacre coeur, and eat it there straight from the bag. it's great, trust me.

Had a round viennoiserie here which was called "pistache chocolat". It looked promising, but unfortunately barely had either chocolat or pistachio inside. The dough was dry, cold and lacked crispy layers. The selection of other baked goods is unimpressive. Can't recommend this place.

A popular place amongst locals for fresh tart with different fruit toppings. Amazingly fresh snd grandmother hand-made feel.

The cheesecake was delicious! I love the authentic funky cheese flavor. I do wish it was more "creamy" and less "eggy." The tart was tangy and clean. The crust was crispy, sugary, and paired well with the fruit!

The food was amazing, we ordered a baguette and some croissants. They both tasted delicious. The staff was really helpful and funny. They thought us who to pronounce croissant. The prices were really good.

This is a top Boulangerie for a quick baguette Alec salmon and avocado, and crème fraiche, a gateau Madeline and a coconut flan with raspberries, take them into the garden at the Basilique de Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre and enjoy a sunny lunch. The baguette is crispy and tasty, the gateaux is lemon drizzled and the flan is delightful. This a small and enjoyable Boulangerie just outside of the thronging tourist trail.
N Lbrt★★★★★
Great place. I havr been loving in the area for almost 30 year and this is definitely one of the best if not the best Boulangerie. You'll also find great Pâtisseries and baguette sandwiches if you want to have picnic in the garden in front of the Sacré Coeur.

It’s been months since I was in Paris and I still think about Boulangerie Raphaëlle. We were staying around the corner and walked over for breakfast multiple times during our trip. The pain au chocolates was fantastic, the lemon tarts were to die for, and their saucisson sandwiches were delicious. They were always friendly and patient while we purchased a few bags of pastries to munch on throughout the day. I’ll be going back if I’m ever in Paris again! Merci Boulangerie Raphaëlle!
Slava Kramarov★★★★★
I just had a couple of items from this boulangerie for breakfast and they were, simply put, spectacular. I came right after it opened, and ordered a croissant, a pain au chocolate, and a pain aux raisin. They were light, buttery, crispy and flaky with multiple layers. Just pure deliciousness. I've never thought that I would have a feeling of pure joy after eating pastry, but I did. I already know where I'm going for breakfast tomorrow 😁

Pain Pain is one of the standout artisan bakeries in Montmartre and a very reliable stop if you want classic Paris pastries with a slightly elevated, creative touch. It’s run by a prize-winning baker (including recognition for “Best Baguette in Paris”), and that shows in the quality of the basics: the baguettes are crisp with a good open crumb, and the viennoiseries (croissants, pain au chocolat, chaussons aux pommes) are generally buttery, well-balanced, and fresh. Many visitors specifically highlight how consistently good the pastries are, especially compared with more tourist-heavy bakeries nearby. Where Pain Pain really stands out is its pastry selection beyond the basics. You’ll often find more creative items like pistachio-chocolate rolls, eclairs with unusual flavours, and seasonal cakes that feel more “pâtisserie-forward” than a standard boulangerie. Reviews frequently mention that their eclairs and desserts are especially memorable, sometimes described as the highlight of the visit. The atmosphere is also part of the appeal: a bright, stylish shop on Rue des Martyrs with a steady local flow mixed with visitors heading up toward Sacré-Cœur. It can get busy, but service is generally friendly and efficient even during peak times. On the downside, it’s not a hidden gem anymore. Prices are slightly above average for a neighborhood bakery, and during peak hours it can feel crowded and a bit rushed. A few visitors also feel the classic items (like croissants) are excellent but not dramatically different from other top Paris bakeries. Verdict: Pain Pain is a very strong all-round Montmartre bakery—best for a “safe bet” stop where you’ll reliably get excellent viennoiseries plus more inventive pastries. It’s less about surprise and more about consistent, high-quality execution in a popular location.
Lia Horvat Zupančič★★★★★
it looks very nice from outside and even better from the inside with all pasteries. prices are good and they have eclair (4,40€) which were hard to find. also the staff is friendly and they are open on sunday which was good for our one day trip 🙂

I visited Pain Pain, a bakery that opens early in the morning. During my stay in Paris, I often stopped by for breakfast because it was convenient and consistently good. The bread and pastries were fresh and delicious, making it a great way to start the day. The staff were also friendly and provided good service, which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a pleasant breakfast spot with quality pastries in Paris, this bakery is definitely worth a visit.
Jonas Ng★★★★☆
The pastries were great and fresh! I love that the staff offered to warm up the focaccia that I ordered. Seeing multiples locals pop by here to get their daily pastries, it’s a safe choice for French pastries! Please note very limited seatings, probably a takeout option for most folks.

What an amazing boulangerie. We tried the croissang and the tarte au citron and croissant was just perfect. The cake had such a strong lemon flavour and it was delicious. I will come back for sure and will try more things, everything looked so good!!

Melt in your mouth perfection with a crisp outer layer, this croissant was unlike any I’ve had before. I honestly don’t know how they do it, but this place is an absolute must stop when visiting Montmartre. With an array of treats to please every palate, you’ll leave dreaming about your next visit.

We had some assorted bakes from this lovely spot— so, so good! My friend lives nearby and is a regular, so we were blessed to be introduced to it. The staff were incredibly friendly and warm, which made the whole experience even more special. One of those cozy little gems you wouldn’t want to miss!

Super cute hidden gem!! Seems to be loved my locals as there was a long line but it moves quick! All the pastries and bread-based treats looked and smelled amazing!! Got a croissant and it was super buttery and flaky. I’ve had better croissants but this one is deff worth the trip up and can visit while coming to MontMartre. I wish I had a chance to try more of their goodies but highly recommend!!

Go. Just go. Best pain au chocolates I’ve ever had. It was one of those moments you see in movies where I took a bite and all my other senses just shut down. Crispy, pillowy and light. It was beautiful. The traditional bread was also excellent and I ate it throughout the day. There are no seating or dining areas which was the only downside. As a side note, I wasn’t used to their cash machine and left five euros accidentally in the change machine. The owner ran to find me across the street buying groceries to return the money. Bless her heart.

Maria, A lovely little macaron shop in Paris that’s definitely worth a visit. The macarons were fresh, with a perfect balance between a crisp shell and a soft, chewy center. I tried the pistachio and raspberry flavors—both were excellent. The pistachio was rich and nutty without being too sweet, while the raspberry had a nice fruity freshness with a slight tang. Overall, a simple but high-quality experience, perfect for anyone who enjoys authentic French macarons.

Award-winning bakery that is one of the best in Paris. Bought different pastries heree and all of them were delightful. The chocolate pain au suisse was excellent: buttery, flaky and filled with rich chocolate in just the right amount. The chocolate madeleine was another lovely surprise. I am usually not into madeleines, but was still impressed by how they make this small cake. It was soft and fragrant, with a delicate chocolate on top. The pistachio New York roll was one of the main highlights. The pastry was beautifully laminated, crisp on the outside, soft inside, and filled with a very generous pistachio cream. The whole dessert had a wonderful combination of nuttiness, creaminess, and elegance. It was easily one of the best pistachio pastries I tried in my life. The pistachio Paris-Brest was also outstanding. The choux pastry was light, the pistachio cream was smooth and flavourful. I also took an apricot tart for takeaway, and it was incredible value for the price. Their “small” tart was actually very large and could easily be shared by two people. It tasted fantastic: buttery tart base, bright apricot flavour and gentle sweetness. I would happily return to this fantastic bakery and recommend it to anyone looking for high-quality Parisian pastries.

Le Grenier à Pain – Award-winning bread that lives up to the hype and this award-winning bakery absolutely delivered. Known for producing one of the best baguettes in Paris, it was high on our list and did not disappoint. Bread and pastries The selection of breads and pastries was incredible. Everything looked fresh, well presented, and clearly made with care. The baguette itself was exactly what you hope for. Crusty on the outside, light and airy inside, and full of flavour. I could not even wait to add butter. Ate it as it was and it still tasted fantastic. That said, with proper French butter it would be next level. The rest of the family tried it as well and all agreed it was exceptional. Experience It was quiet when I visited, so service was quick and relaxed, although I imagine it gets very busy at peak times. The shop itself is clean, tidy, and you can even see the awards and trophies on display, which adds to the experience. Practical details You can buy drinks and other items alongside the bread. Payment is easy with cash or card. They also have a clever system where staff do not handle coins directly, which keeps things hygienic. No toilets on site, but everything else is well set up. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Overall I am no bread expert, but this lived up to expectations and then some. Highly recommended. Easy 5 stars.

We came all the way from Canada, and this little bakery became one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Paris. The bread was simply extraordinary — the kind of flavor you remember long after the last bite. We haven’t had a baguette this good in years. The team was incredibly warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind, making the experience even more special. A small piece of our hearts will stay in Paris, and somehow it will always smell like a fresh baguette from your bakery. Thank you for creating not just bread, but a beautiful memory for our family.

Au Levain D’Antan – Proper French bakery, outstanding bread An amazing find and exactly what you hope for from a traditional Paris bakery. Quality and freshness The bread here is exceptional. Freshly baked, full of flavour, and you can tell straight away it is made with care and proper technique. Everything on display looks inviting, from the baguettes to the pastries and sandwiches. Experience It has that authentic feel as soon as you walk in. Busy, welcoming, and full of people who clearly know they are getting something good. The whole place just feels genuine. Overall A fantastic stop for fresh bread and baked goods, and one we would happily return to. 5 stars from all the family.

Finally, a croissant that is perfectly laminated and airy, and achieves the delicate balance of savory/sweet. I knew it would be legit because it’s an establishment that still prefers for you to pay cash! My only regret is that I discovered it on my last day in Paris. *sigh*

This bakery felt very authentic - we were the only people there that were not locals. The two women behind the counter did not speak fluent English with us, and my French is horrible, but we managed. The pastries at Leonie Bakery are awesome, and I really love this place! ❤️ I did have a small unpleasant experience during my last visit. I pointed out the raisin croissant and two regular croissants, but the worker was moving very quickly and I didn’t notice that she had picked the raisin one. When I then asked for the raisin croissant, she responded with a loud “YEAH.” I understand it may have been a simple misunderstanding, but there was really no need to raise her voice at a customer. Aside from that experience, I really enjoy the pastries and will definitely continue coming back. Hopefully, next time the interaction will be a little warmer and more welcoming. Updated. The owner response did not include any apology or acknowledgment of what happened. I was not looking for an argument. I simply expected the concern to be taken seriously and for there to be some accountability. A customer should not be spoken to in that manner, and dismissing the issue without even offering an apology is very disappointing.

the almond croissant here is amazing. i arrived at 2:34pm and there was still a pretty solid selection of pastries too. the croissant wasn’t super crispy but it was massive with a super generous amount of tasty frangipane that i could eat by the spoon. super buttery with a strong almond flavour. service was friendly too and the store is super cute and clean.

One of the best croissants I've ever had. It was fragrant, crispy on the outside yet incredibly soft inside, large and satisfying. Absolutely delicious. 🥐 Bakery and pastry prices are fair, offering excellent value. Drinks and other dishes are a bit on the expensive side, but understandable given the location. Staff is quick and a bit detached, but overall acceptable.

Are French people really this frugal? Such a damaged, worn-out cup — with a big chip and deep cracks — is still being used for customers. Aren’t they worried it might cut someone’s mouth? The food itself is quite tasty, though!

We had a hot chocolate with cream and strawberries (€15) and a chocolate crepe (€5). The crepe is made in front of you which was cool to watch. It was so delicious and rich that we couldn’t finish it in one go! The strawberries were nice and fresh, and the hot chocolate was everything we hoped for.

Stopped by Carette’s Montmartre location after touring the neighborhood and it was the perfect break. The pain au chocolat and croissant were both exceptional—buttery, flaky, and incredibly fresh. Unlike some of Paris’ more famous cafés, we didn’t encounter any lines, which made the experience even more enjoyable. That said, this is a relatively small location, and I can easily see it getting busy with long queues during peak hours—perhaps we just got lucky with our timing. Service was quick and pleasant, and the relaxed atmosphere was a welcome respite after exploring Montmartre. A great spot for classic French pastries.
kim★★☆☆☆
meh lil crepe fixer; got the cinnamon sugar and sugar lemon, both landed below the bar. fresh enough to be edible but it tasted quite literal as bread with a sugar spread; though the lemon one had a smidge of brightness, neither really went beyond "crepe-shaped carbs" 🥱
Jade Kavanagh★★★☆☆
We got a mocha and ham croissant which was delicious but the mocha had a slight cinnamon taste to it which I didn’t like. All the desserts looked good! It’s takeaway only which is good for no long que but awkward if you bought food to eat.
Lulu Tan★★★★☆
The service from the guy making the crêpes was terrible and incredibly slow. He kept making mistakes and repeating himself, and we started to wonder if he knew how to make them or not. The line wasn’t long, but it still turned into a very long wait. Lol. The crêpe was overrated—we had the cheese crêpe. That said, the sorbet and cold chocolate tasted really good!!

Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near Sacré-Cœur

Navigating the food scene in a high-tourism area like Montmartre requires a bit of strategy to ensure you get the freshest products and the best value for your money. While the bakeries listed above are committed to quality, there are still unwritten rules and local customs that can enhance your experience. By following a few simple guidelines, you can shop like a local, avoid common tourist pitfalls, and appreciate the craftsmanship of French baking on a deeper level.

Visit early or during "fresh bake" times.
The French schedule their bread purchases around specific times of day. If you want a warm, crisp baguette, visit between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM or again around 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, which is when the afternoon batch usually comes out of the oven.

Know your baguette preferences.
Don’t just ask for "a baguette." If you prefer a crustier, airier loaf with a darker bake, ask for a tradition. If you want a softer, whiter interior, ask for a baguette classique. This small distinction shows you understand the craft and ensures you get exactly what you enjoy.

Ask for "cuit" (well-baked).
If you love a deep golden crust and a slightly charred flavor, ask the baker for a baguette bien cuite (well done). If you prefer a softer, paler crust, ask for pas trop cuite (not too cooked). They are usually happy to accommodate.

Carry cash for small purchases.
While most bakeries now accept credit cards, many have a minimum spend of 5 or 10 euros. If you are just grabbing a single croissant or a coffee, having a few coins or a small bill will make the transaction smoother and faster.

Protect your pastries.
Montmartre is full of lovely parks and viewpoints, but it is also full of sparrows and pigeons who are experts at stealing crumbs. If you plan to eat outside near the basilica, keep your pastry wrapped or hold it close to your body to avoid losing your treat to the local wildlife.

Don’t skip the savory.
While pastries get all the attention, the savory offerings like quiche lorraine, ham and cheese croissants, or fougasse are often where the true skill of the baker shines. If you need a lunch option, these are far superior to the tourist restaurants nearby.

Exploring the streets around the Sacré-Cœur with a fresh pastry in hand is one of the most romantic and satisfying experiences Paris has to offer. The combination of historic architecture, artistic energy, and world-class baking creates a sensory experience that is hard to match anywhere else in the world. By choosing the right establishments and following local etiquette, you transform a simple snack into a cultural ritual.

As you wander down the hill toward Pigalle or explore the quiet side streets of the 18th arrondissement, let your nose guide you to the next open door and the smell of butter and yeast. The memory of a perfect croissant enjoyed in the shadow of the basilica is one that will linger long after you have returned home, serving as the most delicious souvenir of your trip to Paris.
