12 Best Traditional French Restaurants in Honfleur

Stepping into Honfleur feels like walking into a living impressionist painting. The narrow cobblestone lanes, the shimmering Vieux Bassin, and the tall slate-fronted houses create an atmosphere of timeless Norman charm. While the harbor is famous for its artistic legacy, the true soul of this port town is often found simmering in copper pots and roasting in wood-fired ovens.

For the culinary traveler, Honfleur represents a crossroads of maritime bounty and pastoral richness. The proximity to the English Channel provides a daily supply of sole, mussels, and scallops, while the Pays d’Auge hinterland offers cream, butter, apples, and world-renowned cheeses. Traditional French cuisine here is not a trend; it is a way of life passed down through generations of restaurateurs.

However, the sheer volume of dining options around the harbor can be overwhelming, and not all tables are created equal. Many cater to the passing tourist trade, serving standardized menus that lack the soul of true Norman cooking. Finding the authentic spots requires looking beyond the flashy signs to the kitchens where recipes have remained unchanged for decades.

This guide is curated for those who seek the genuine flavors of France—the slow-cooked meats, the rich cream sauces, and the perfectly caramelized tarts. We have prioritized establishments known for their commitment to local sourcing, their mastery of classical technique, and their ability to transport diners back to a bygone era of hospitality.

Whether you are seeking a romantic dinner by the water or a rustic lunch in a timber-framed dining room, the following selections represent the pinnacle of tradition. Each venue offers a distinct experience, but all share a common dedication to the culinary heritage of Normandy. Prepare to discover the tables where locals celebrate life’s milestones and where the spirit of old Honfleur is preserved.

Below is a carefully selected list of the finest traditional French dining experiences the town has to offer, ranging from historic institutions to intimate hidden gems.

Highly recommend. One of our best fish dishes 🐟.
Adam Ren★★★★☆
Really professional and genuine service.👍 The mussel is fresh and generous portion. Nice choice of oyster on the menu, really delicious. ( suggest change the serving bowl , oyster juice run out or add ice underneath the oyster) grey shrimp soup really under season can't bring out the umami fish of the day is not seasoned, with a bland cream sauce, served with side veg that was really overcooked. (egg plant in it is under cooked at the same time) This poor quality plat I will only expect in some poorly organized large scale tourist trap restaurant

First time at L’envie and definitely had a good time. First of all, the service was very good. Very friendly, professional and well-mannered. The food was very tasty and of good quality. Would definitely recommend the mussels with the cream sauce. The fries, although soft, were very flavoured. If I’m ever back in Honfleur, I’d go back to L’envie!

We were a family of 15 (2 grandparents, 6 parents, 7 young adult grandkids) on our annual family trip. This year we traveled through Normandy and Brittany. During our visit to Honfleur, we booked lunch at L’Envie. It is a small, charming restaurant that was a fantastic find. They were incredibly welcoming, even for such a large group, and all the dishes were superb. I would not hesitate to go again and highly recommend it!
Iwan Davies★★★★☆
It was very nice here. The food was delicious, I highly recommend the steak and fries as it was delicious. Service was quite slow to ask for our order but once we ordered it came quickly. The view out of the window was lovely. Overall a nice place to come and I recommend.

Really nice spot right in front of the harbour, so the view is beautiful and it’s a lovely place to sit and watch the boats and people go by. The prices are a little high for the portions. I had the salmon and avocado toast, which was quite small, but the taste was really good! 🤤 The tarte Tatin for dessert absolutely hit the spot — it was SO good! My boyfriend enjoyed his dish a little less as he found it lacking in flavour, but overall we had a nice experience. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming. A great spot to relax and enjoy the harbour!

Delicious food friendly service. Horrendous music! Saw this place on Google reviews with one of the the highest scores so decided to visit. Friendly service and the food was delicious, albeit quite pricey. Fish soup was very tasty and lobster with pasta was superb but the whole experience was completely ruined by the horrendous eurotrash 90s dance music mix which gave me indigestion and totally killed the relaxing atmosphere of the port. Change the music and I'd be back like a shot. Otherwise give it a miss.

The best meal I’ve had in France so far! We started with the mussels in cream sauce, and they were absolutely divine. The sauce was rich, flavorful, and perfect for soaking up with bread. The oysters were also super fresh. The tagliatelle homard was the star of the meal. You could really taste the quality of the ingredients—the fresh herbs, the beautifully balanced sauce, and the lobster itself. The portion was generous, with a whole lobster included, and it was incredibly juicy, fresh, and delicious. Every element of the dish was executed perfectly. A memorable meal and a restaurant I would happily return to.

I went with friends and waited for 5minutes to get seat. Staff was friendly and helpful even though they spoke little English. Food was good especially lobsters. The Normandy dessert was good. It seems bit overpriced but worthy for the price. Outside was crowded

A fantastic restaurant- you could tell the staff are happy to be there! The crepes we had were delicious and filling. We tried the Normandie and the pepper steak. Very comfortable chairs and such a pretty view! My favourite of our trip so far.

We had a lovely time having dinner here. To be honest we didn't expect it to be a surprise menu but it turned out really great. If you see Alain don't forget to have a good joke with him, he made our evening. We'll be happy to visit again

I came alone this Friday evening. But I didn’t feel lonely at all because the service was very kind and friendly. The waitress was really professional (credits to her). The food was very high standards. I ate fish and was really delighted with what they served. The desert was also very nice. Overall this was a great experience. I highly recommend and will be back! Bravo

We were warmly welcomed, got good advice and our special request were taken into account. We had a lovely 5 course diner here

My wife and I booked a table for us and our two small dogs on the Friday evening as part of a one night stopover in Honfleur. Both chose the fish option 3 course menu. All dishes were simple but well presented, beautifully cooked, and fresh using seasonal ingredients. Menu was well balanced, and they were very considerate toward my gluten free requirement (but best to advise this in advance). We were lucky enough to have live music in the square, so it made for a nice relaxing evening and the serving staff were fantastic. Looking forward to coming back!

What the fish happened in the kitchen today? God knows. Service was delayed and slow. Could see many impatient faces just wondering what was going on. For $240 for the food we had for two, I would say skip this tourist trap and eat better elsewhere. You are told from the start that you can’t choose what’s in the set menu . Well we were game to try . But it wasn’t a real culinary experience. More like an amateur chef trying his hand at cooking. who wants a chocolate killer dessert when you dislike chocolate??? No choices absolutely. Horrible experience.

10/10👌🏻 The main course (pan-fried chicken) was extremely good. The starter (cauliflower-sesame cream) was also incredibly tasty – everything was just perfect. I honestly can’t say anything negative. On top of that, the atmosphere was amazing: very friendly, very warm and welcoming. We truly had a wonderful evening. Thank you so much🩷🙏🏽

Le Vieux Honfleur delivered a fantastic dining experience with exceptional dishes. I started with the shrimp and lentils, which were absolutely amazing—perfectly balanced and full of flavor. For the main, I had the grilled Dover sole with potatoes, and I must say, I’ve never had such a rich, flavorful fish. It was cooked to perfection and truly memorable. A great spot for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality seafood in a charming setting. Highly recommended!
Joana Vergara★★★★★
The team provided reliable and prompt service. The seafood's freshness stood out, especially the torteau, which was of exceptional quality—unlike any I've had before!

Located just next to the St. Catherine Church, the cozy Côté Resto offers great food at reasonable prices. Friendly floor staff & smooth service.

Great atmosphere, service and quality of food. We had our first dinner in Honfleur there and were charmed by the setting of the restaurant near the old wooden church and the elaborate menu with a lot of seafood choices.

Although we arrived earlier than our reservation time, we finished dining at 3:30 p.m. The staff served us with great patience and never gave the impression of being in a hurry to close. This is a restaurant that combines both delicious food and warmth.
P Tham★★★★★
Cosy restaurant that serves great food and friendly service. We went with the fixed menu, which gave us some great options. A few tables around us had seafood platters, which looked amazing.
Rian Gonzales★★★★★
Went here for dinner just from the glowing reviews ive seen of it online! We asked to be seated in the heated outdoor dining area as we had three dogs with us and they happily obliged. We were served some light snacks while waiting for our meal. The place was packed at 7:30pm and if you want to be seated inside, calling to reserve a table is highly recommended. The only downside of a popular restaurant is the wait time, but it is well worth it! 💖 Both the dishes we ordered were definitely impressive. The fish were cooked still tender and moist. It was interesting to have tagliatelle veggies to go with the fish! Ingredients were fresh and delicious. Prices are on the above average side, but i was very happy with my overall experience! Sadly the dessert was a big lackluster and was nothing particularly special. It almost taste as if it were store bought and plated. In any case, despite this dish, everything was lovely and i had a pleasant experience and still recommend this restaurant! Despite the crowd, the service didn't suffer and the staff were courteous and friendly, even offering you an english menu if needed.

Trés excellente! Such a nice vibe inside, our server was very helpful with recommending a fantastic, local wine for myself and my partner. We had the oysters (unreal!) with two daily “surprise” accompaniments. The first was a merguez spice blend with cucumber which was unique and delicious. The second a sweet pickle blend (also scrumptious!) Our mains, a local whitefish for my partner and trout for myself, were also delicious. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice dinner with some modern, creative twists on traditional French seafood!
Mi G (MG)★★★★★
A very cozy little restaurant tucked into the charming streets of beautiful Honfleur. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, the kind of place where you immediately feel comfortable and welcome after a walk along the harbor. Service was truly delightful. The two young waitresses were incredibly polite, attentive and helpful throughout the evening. They were always present at the right moment, answered every question with patience and genuine kindness, and made the dinner feel warm and personal. As for the food – it was good, though not unforgettable. The oysters were fresh and enjoyable, definitely the highlight of the meal. The fish was decent but rather ordinary, and the pasta was simply… pasta – correct, but without any particular character or memorable touch. Overall, a pleasant dinner in a lovely setting with excellent hospitality. You come here more for the atmosphere and the caring service than for a culinary revelation.

A lovely seafood restaurant in the town of Honfleur. Me and my family had our first dinner here in our France trip. The atmosphere was very elegant, the service very helpful, and the food was good quality. 🐟
Glen Vaal★★★★★
This restaurant is very popular with good reason. They serve a wide range of very fresh seafood. I had a selection as a starter which included: oysters, king prawn, langoustine, winkles, wells and clams. The main courses are also excellent, though my traditional fish soup was too large for me to finish. The wine list is excellent and you won't pay a fortune for very good wine. Because they are busy, service seemed a bit rushed, but forgive them, they really care and deliver a high quality experience (NB a little french language knowledge will help you)

The service was very nice. We enjoyed the wine recommendation and also dessert. However, the main course that we ordered was not up to expectation. Octopus was super rubbery (our fault for not voicing out). The potato that came with the steak was burnt. However, the service was good!

L'Oxalis was a really lovely dining experience overall. The service stood out right from the start — we were initially seated inside, but when we asked to move outdoors to enjoy the beautiful square, the staff were more than happy to accommodate us. Throughout the meal, the waiters were incredibly attentive, regularly checking in to make sure everything was okay. They were warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which made a big difference. The food was superb. The oysters were fresh, the foie gras was rich and delicious, and the mains were excellent — we had the lamb and the salmon, both cooked perfectly. The only small downside was the menu selection, as I would have liked to see a bit more seafood on offer. Dessert was decent, though not quite as strong as the rest of the meal. I tried the mille-feuille out of curiosity, but it didn’t fully win me over. Overall, it’s a very good restaurant with fantastic service and high-quality food. I’d definitely recommend it.
Lauren Ashby★★★★★
Really excellent food. I had the fish of the day, served with a quinoa risotto in a saffron and shellfish sauce. My husband had the tataki. Both perfectly made. For our daughter it was fish of the day with best mashed potato ever and lovelycarrots. Kind and considerate wait staff. Great find!
Gee Thomson★★★★★
We’ve been in France, Brittany and Normandy for two weeks and to be frank the meals out - from cheap to expensive -have been mixed. However at L Oxalis we arrived at what we wanted from French cooking. Not overcomplicated, great sources, interesting choices, and fantastic tastes. A nice place to finish.

A wonderful restaurant showcasing the best of French cuisine. Fresh, locally sourced seafood takes center stage, complemented by attentive service and a creative menu with refined presentation. The oysters and shellfish are exceptionally fresh — truly a highlight of the dining experience.

Probably the best kids’ menu in town – a proper hamburger with fries and even an ice cream sundae, really great value! The fixed-price main courses are also excellent: both the chicken and the tartare were very good choices. It’s a small and friendly place, definitely worth a visit.

During a 5 day stay in beautiful Honfleur, we spent more time here than at any other bar or restaurant. Charles le Patron speaks good English and is always very welcoming. The Bar/Bistro is conveniently located a couple of streets back from the Vieux Bassin and, that is reflected in the prices. The food is locally sourced, good quality and well prepared. There are separate tables set aside outside for those who do not want to eat. You can have anything from one to three course on the set menu, starting at 15 euros. We had a variety of different dishes and enjoyed them all. When l am next in Honfleur, l will certainly be visiting Charles again.

From the warm welcome by the owner to the last au revoir, it was a delightful and delicious evening. The service was attentive. The food (manager’s husband is the chef) was fabulous…sweet-yet salty-oysters, sea bream tartare with an explosion of flavors, and the hake on leek with a light sesame flavor. Dessert was a light chocolate mousse with a light sprinkle of something akin to granola (gave a nice mix of texture). The restaurant has a beautiful decor and is not big…so make reservations. We felt the price of the food and wine was more than reasonable (especially being a tourist town)!!!

Every dish is delicious and has good presentation. I traveled in Paris, the Loire Valley, and Normandy for 2 weeks. This restaurant is my favorite, even better than Michelin-starred ones I've had.

After two visits, we can honestly say this is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is honest, flavorful, and prepared with great care. A great dining experience with very accommodating staff. The restaurant has a cozy, traditional atmosphere. For our meal, we ordered the fish soup, scallops with roasted vegetables, and grilled prawns, all of which were very good and well-prepared. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling well before we arrived, and my situation worsened during the dinner to the point where we had to leave early. The waiters were very understanding and kindly packed up our entire meal so we could take it back to our hotel. Since it is quite rare for traditional French sit-down restaurants to offer takeaway or doggy bags, we really appreciated them making an exception for us. After I recovered later that evening, I finished the meal in our room. Even after being packed away for a while, the food still tasted great. I highly recommend this place for both the quality of the cooking and the helpful service.
Rosemary Cheeseman★★★☆☆
Great looking restaurant with outdoor tables on a cobbled pedestrian area. The staff were friendly enough but sadly the food didn't match expectation. Terrine and quiche starters were delicious, but mussels as a main course were tiny and sauce curdled. Fish of the day was fish and chips. The fish was tough and to be honest have had better frozen. Sad too, to be charged 6.50 euro for a bottle of tap water.. witnessed bottle being filled from bar tap. Sad to put bad review but felt cheated as a tourist.

We had an amazing lunch. Everything was super goood. The oysters were very fresh. We ended up ordering another plate of oysters after we finished the first. The duck was FANTASTIC, better than beef . The fish was amazing and fresh!! LOVED everything, plus the restaurant has a real fireplace 😍

We found this excellent restaurant purely by chance whilst walking through the old streets on our first night in Honfleur. The staff were super friendly and we were able to eat at a pavement table (in March) kept warm with a space heater. The menu had a good selection of dishes, the service was good the food was delicious. The inside of the restaurant looked very inviting as well but it was great to sit outside and eat by candlelight. Really liked this place.

Lovely food. Good fish choices. Fixed price menus are very good value for quality of the food. We discovered this purely by accident and are glad that we did. Will return next time we are in the area. Thank you.

We’ve eaten all over the world and had some Fantastic meals…and this was in the top 3, easily. Saddened we’re only in beautiful Honfleur 1 night or we’d go straight back. Simply exquisite food.

This is where we ate during the small group tour to Honfleur and Mont Saint-Missen in France. The restaurant was very pretty and the food was delicious.

Best meal of my life!! The seasoning was rich and harmonious, it was so incredibly good that my eyes got wet. The decoration inside the restaurant was adorable too. Loved the view from the second floor. Definitely a must visit place in Honfleur.

Excellent food that is beautifully presented. We’ve eaten a lot of different meals on this trip and this restaurant was definitely a highlight. The waitstaff was also friendly and kind which has not always been the case for us in Northern France. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

The bouillabaisse has way too many mussels, and the fish is overcooked and falling apart. I think it was boiled a second time as it didn’t seem also very fresh. We were 2 persons and asked right from the start if the portion offered for 45 euros was for two people, and we were told no! So we ordered also another main course. In the end, the bouillabaisse was left on the plate—it was a disproportionately large portion for one person—and we paid a lot for something mediocre and overly large. Nothing to write home about...!

Tips for Choosing a Traditional French Restaurant in Honfleur

Navigating the dining scene in a popular tourist destination like Honfleur requires a bit of local knowledge. The difference between a mediocre meal and a transcendent one often comes down to timing, menu literacy, and understanding how the French approach dining. To help you eat like a local rather than a visitor, consider the following practical advice before you book your table.

Book Ahead, Especially for Dinner
The best traditional kitchens in Honfleur are often small, family-run affairs with limited seating. During the high season (May through September) and on weekends, walking in without a reservation will likely result in disappointment. A quick phone call or online booking a day or two in advance secures your spot and signals to the kitchen that you are serious about the meal.

Embrace the "Formule" or Set Menu
To experience the chef’s true skill without breaking the bank, look for the formule (fixed-price menu) or the menu du terroir. These set menus usually offer the best value and feature dishes that the kitchen prepares daily based on what the fishermen and farmers brought in that morning. Ordering à la carte is fine, but the set menu is often where the heart of the house resides.

Look Beyond the Vieux Bassin
While dining with a view of the harbor is undeniably romantic, restaurants directly on the waterfront often pay a premium for rent, which can translate to higher prices for lower quality food. Venture one or two streets back into the historic center or toward the Sainte-Catherine district. You will often find more authentic, locally focused menus where the rent is lower and the focus is entirely on the plate.

Check the Cheese Course
In Normandy, a meal without cheese is incomplete. When reviewing a menu, look for a selection of fromages de Normandie such as Camembert, Livarot, Pont-l’Évêque, and Neufchâtel. A restaurant that proudly lists specific local cheeses—and serves them at proper room temperature—demonstrates a commitment to regional authenticity that likely extends to the rest of the menu.

Time Your Meal Like a Local
The French dine later than many international visitors, but kitchens in Honfleur often close between lunch and dinner service. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, while dinner service rarely starts before 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM. Arriving at 6:00 PM will usually find the doors locked. Adapt to the local rhythm to ensure you receive the full, unhurried experience.

Honfleur is a town that rewards the curious and the patient. By stepping away from the immediate tourist flow and seeking out the tables where tradition is guarded fiercely, you unlock a deeper understanding of Norman culture. The scent of simmering cider, the sight of a perfectly blistered tarte tatin, and the warmth of a dining room that has welcomed sailors and artists for centuries are the true treasures of this port.

As you wander the cobbled streets after your meal, with the lights of the harbor reflecting on the water, you will understand why so many painters tried to capture this town on canvas. The beauty of Honfleur is not just visual; it is edible, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. Bon appétit.
