Honfleur’s cobbled lanes, timber-framed facades, and shimmering Vieux Bassin have long made it a favourite stop on Normandy’s coast. While the town is famous for its impressionist light and bustling harbour, its dining scene has quietly evolved into something far more diverse than traditional moules-frites. For lovers of Japanese cuisine, the question is no longer whether you can find good sushi here, but which spot deserves your reservation.
The demand for fresh, refined Japanese food in Honfleur has grown significantly, attracting skilled chefs who respect both tradition and local produce. This means you can now enjoy meticulously rolled maki and delicate nigiri just steps away from the sailboats and art galleries. Whether you are looking for a quick bento between sightseeing stops or an elegant evening of omakase-style dining, Honfleur has a table for you.
Because this is a port town, access to high-quality seafood is a distinct advantage. The best sushi chefs in Honfleur know how to source from the same markets that supply the classic brasseries, giving their fish an edge in freshness. From buttery salmon to sweet local scallops, the raw ingredients here can rival those found in much larger French cities.
However, the sheer variety of Asian-inspired restaurants can make choosing the right one a challenge. Some venues focus on authentic Japanese technique, while others blend French and Asian influences to create something uniquely Norman. Knowing the difference between a tourist trap and a true hidden gem will define your dining experience.
To help you navigate the scene, we have focused on venues that consistently deliver on fish quality, rice texture, and overall atmosphere. We considered service, value for money, and the ability to cater to both dine-in and takeaway customers. The result is a curated list that balances well-known local favourites with quieter, under-the-radar addresses.
Here is where you should be eating sushi the next time you find yourself in Honfleur.

Very friendly atmosphere with an approachable, yet elevated, menu. We enjoyed the beef tartare, served with Parmesan and shaved egg, accompanied by fries - absolute must try. Also enjoyed the monkfish and Katsudon-style fried chicken bowl with pickled cabbage. As to see the dessert tray - you won’t be able to pass. For those of us with limited language skills, there is a menu available in English.

We visited SaQuaNa during our first evening in Honfleur. And what a surprise it was. Food was amazing. The chef turns authentic dishes modern without losing any of the taste or appeal. The chef knows to pull of something you don't see often; the restaurant offers dishes from all over the world, which all meet the same high standards. How I know? Because we couldn't resist revisiting the restaurant after our first try.
The staff is also worth mentioning. They are very welcoming and kind. They do their best to make you feel at home and offer you the best evening possible.

SaQuaNa was a last minute pick for lunch during a day trip to Honfleur, and it ended up my favourite spot in the week I spent in France. The menu is seasonal and changes, with set options (starter + main course or main course + dessert, etc.)
It was a BEAUTIFUL summer day, we got the following:
1. They started us off with some fantastic home made bread (paid extra for butter, which was also worth it) - 10/10
2. The starter was salmon, it has a lovely silken texture, in a sorrel brothy sauce - 10/10 This is probably one of the best dishes I've had in a fine dining restaurant
3. Our main was a mince beef filled, fried sea shell in a fresh tomato sauce - 8.5/10 it would have been a 10 but I thought the seashell pasta was a tad thick, especially when fried
4. Dessert - pistachio tart, and lemon meringue tart. 10/10 for both
5. Had the recommended pinot with the meal
The bill was about 75 Euros for 2 people.
The view of the street was so cute, and I loved looking at all their gorgeous bread on display. I highly recommend the place!

I’m giving this place a 5-star review because it was a nice discovery. We went in for an afternoon snack.
The staff were welcoming and quick to come.
The cakes are really delicious. There is a great variety in which a lady comes in person to explain to you each one.
I recommend this place for a cosy afternoon snack out with friends or family or loved ones!

The staff at the restaurant warmly welcomed us, and the food not only tasted delicious but also felt light and healthy. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant added to the positive experience. During our visit, we were on a tour and had concerns about getting our food on time. The staff, in a reassuring and friendly manner, assured us that everything would be served promptly. Their caring attitude made the dining experience even more enjoyable.

We bought sushi Wednesday evening, and the prices were already high for such disappointing quality. The salmon and cream cheese California rolls weren't even fully sealed. (The salmon didn't even wrap around the edge and was cut extremely thin...) But the worst part was that the rice wasn't even cooked. The California rolls wrapped in rice paper weren't cut all the way through. You take one with your chopsticks and end up with three. They were the worst sushi and California rolls we've ever had. Awful. They were fit for the bin...

Always such a warm welcome from the staff! Smiling and friendly. Lots of promotions, and a nice tasting experience. And of course, the sushi is excellent, and the other dishes are just as good!
I recommend it 100%! ☺️

The service was very nice. We enjoyed the wine recommendation and also dessert. However, the main course that we ordered was not up to expectation. Octopus was super rubbery (our fault for not voicing out). The potato that came with the steak was burnt. However, the service was good!
mimi★★★★★
L'Oxalis was a really lovely dining experience overall. The service stood out right from the start — we were initially seated inside, but when we asked to move outdoors to enjoy the beautiful square, the staff were more than happy to accommodate us. Throughout the meal, the waiters were incredibly attentive, regularly checking in to make sure everything was okay. They were warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which made a big difference.
The food was superb. The oysters were fresh, the foie gras was rich and delicious, and the mains were excellent — we had the lamb and the salmon, both cooked perfectly. The only small downside was the menu selection, as I would have liked to see a bit more seafood on offer.
Dessert was decent, though not quite as strong as the rest of the meal. I tried the mille-feuille out of curiosity, but it didn’t fully win me over.
Overall, it’s a very good restaurant with fantastic service and high-quality food. I’d definitely recommend it.
Lauren Ashby★★★★★
Really excellent food. I had the fish of the day, served with a quinoa risotto in a saffron and shellfish sauce. My husband had the tataki. Both perfectly made. For our daughter it was fish of the day with best mashed potato ever and lovelycarrots. Kind and considerate wait staff. Great find!

We’ve been in France, Brittany and Normandy for two weeks and to be frank the meals out - from cheap to expensive -have been mixed. However at L Oxalis we arrived at what we wanted from French cooking. Not overcomplicated, great sources, interesting choices, and fantastic tastes. A nice place to finish.

A wonderful restaurant showcasing the best of French cuisine. Fresh, locally sourced seafood takes center stage, complemented by attentive service and a creative menu with refined presentation. The oysters and shellfish are exceptionally fresh — truly a highlight of the dining experience.

Lovely dinner here tonight, sat out in the sunshine on the outdoor tables. The host was very friendly and keen to help, and the food options were varied and interesting. 2 great vegetarian options (out of 5 total options!) so definitely vegetarian friendly. The meals were full of vegetables, tasted fresh and were made using seasonal ingredients. Drinks and desserts were tasty and local too! Highly recommend this little gem ☺️

A wonderful experience in the heart of Honfleur
Restaurant Sauvage is a true gem – beautiful setting, friendly staff, and excellent food. We enjoyed a perfectly cooked main course, a light and tasty poke bowl, and delicious desserts. We were especially impressed by the Duo cerise estragon – an original and beautifully balanced dessert that’s a treat for both the taste buds and the eyes.
A lovely surprise was the homemade cider – well-balanced and perfectly complementing the meal. The price-to-quality ratio is excellent. We highly recommend this place to anyone who appreciates honest, creative cuisine with character and heart.

An incredible place. They mostly cater for take away orders but if you are lucky enough to spot a free table (one inside and two outside) go for it! The menu changes weekly, produce is local and organic and comes from the chef's parents garden; you can also taste apple cider and juice produced by his father. The food was simply scrumptious, so so delicious. A separate note on the place design, it is slick and minimalistic-ly chic. Highly recommend

During my recent business trip, I stumbled upon a hidden gem of a restaurant that caught my attention on Google. With only two tables, this intimate spot offers a thoughtfully curated menu featuring meat, vegetarian, and fish dishes. Although it lacks the extensive setup of larger establishments, the chef’s dedication to crafting each dish is evident in the flavors. Don’t miss the ultimate highlight: the French toast dessert, which is absolutely top-notch and worth the visit alone.

A wonderful dining experience!! Plan ahead and make your reservation a day in advance for one of the best meals of your life. The cook and proprietor- Leo - ensured we had the most amazing dining experience. The ingredients (breads, meats cheeses, wines, etc.) are all thoughtfully chosen and grown/made in the region / close to the restaurant. Do yourself a favor and escape Honfleur’s busy downtown for a unique and delicious meal situated in a beautiful garden that’s also in the shadow of a trampoline park, which only adds interest and whimsy to the experience. Leo will be happy to recommend wines to pair with your meal — take his advice! He’s a pro and his choices helped elevate our meal. Easily my best meal in Honfleur.

If you’re looking for a unique, awe inspiring sensational food experience, then this is your hidden gem.

Omg. Just wow. We were absolutely starving after flying into paris and driving over and decided on the prefix lunch. What a treat that was. A little yogurt with a fruit jam and a biscuit to start with, along with a coffee product and a juice blend, followed by a dish with salad, savory biscuits, smoked turkey/salmon, eggs, potatoes. When we were in a food coma, they brought another sampler of 4 desserts. All absolutely delicious! This gem makes a trip to honfluer worth it in its own.

Loved everything about this place. I gave 4 stars because they really should have a totally separate menu for the items they serve at different times. A must during your stay in Honfleur. We love the food, the service is always excellent, very kid friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere! Definitely order the pain perdu.

I have mixed feelings about this place. We arrived between breakfast and lunch. We were seated right away but it took us 10 mins to get a menu and then another 5 mins for a waitress to take our drink order and we didn't get our drinks for 25 mins after that. By this point, I was pretty mad. Eventually our food was brought out, and it was very good, so that made up for the wait slightly.
My recommendation would be to come here after 11 am. Anything before that is super slow and the menu is very minimal before that time. On a positive note, it's a very cute atmosphere, both inside and outside. The issue seemed to be a lack of staff. What appeared to be a husband and wife team, they were both very nice when they came by, but very elusive because it was just the two of them. Food was yummy.

Wonderful, very accommodating and had wonderful breakfasts. The chef was lovely to chat to and sorted my wife’s breakfast to cater for her gluten intolerance. Lovely style and ambience to the place as well.

Tips for Choosing the Best Sushi in Honfleur
Finding great sushi in a historic French port requires a slightly different approach than dining in a major metropolis. The local dining culture, seasonal tourism, and the blend of French and Japanese culinary standards all play a role. Keep the following advice in mind to ensure you get the freshest and most satisfying experience possible during your visit.
Look for seasonal local fish.
While salmon and tuna are standard, the best Honfleur sushi chefs often feature local catches. Ask if they have any specials using Normandy scallops (Coquilles Saint-Jacques), sea bass, or mackerel. These local ingredients are often fresher than imported fish and offer a unique taste of the region.
Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Some of the most authentic sushi in Honfleur is served in small, unassuming storefronts away from the main Vieux Bassin crowds. Restaurants with heavy foot traffic on the harbour often cater to standard tourist menus, whereas a small spot on a side street might be run by a chef with a deep passion for Japanese technique.
Book ahead during peak season.
Honfleur is one of Normandy’s most visited towns, especially in summer and during the Christmas market. Sushi restaurants are often small and fill up quickly with both locals and tourists. A reservation ensures you are not left waiting, particularly if you want a table for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night.
Consider takeaway for a picnic by the water.
If the weather is nice, grabbing a sushi box to eat on a bench overlooking the Vieux Bassin or the Seine estuary can be magical. Many quality spots offer beautifully packaged takeaway options that travel well, giving you a more relaxed and scenic dining experience.
Check the rice quality.
A true sign of a good sushi restaurant is the rice. It should be slightly warm or room temperature, perfectly seasoned with vinegar, and hold its shape without being hard. If the rice is dry, cold, or bland, the sushi will disappoint no matter how fresh the fish is.
Honfleur may be steeped in Norman tradition, but its culinary landscape is refreshingly open to global influences. A good sushi meal here offers a pleasant contrast to the richer, cream-based sauces often found in local French cuisine. It is a lighter option that leaves you energised for climbing the hill to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Grâce or wandering through the Sainte-Catherine district.
Whether you are a local looking for a new regular spot or a visitor seeking a break from steak-frites, the sushi scene in Honfleur is ready to impress. Take your time, explore beyond the main square, and enjoy the unique pleasure of eating expertly prepared raw fish in one of France’s most picturesque ports.
