La Rochelle is a city that seems to have been designed for leisurely lunches and long, unhurried dinners. Sheltered by its historic Vieux Port and cooled by the Atlantic breeze, the city offers a dining scene that feels both refined and refreshingly unpretentious. While the yachts bob gently in the marina, the streets behind the quay hum with the sound of clinking glasses and the aroma of melting cheese and fresh dough.
Finding the right place to eat here is less about avoiding bad food and more about matching your mood to the right terrace, cellar, or counter seat. Whether you are looking for a quick slice before catching the ferry to Γle de RΓ© or a slow, multi-course affair under ancient stone arches, La Rochelle delivers with remarkable consistency. The local food culture leans heavily on the sea, but you will also find excellent charcuterie, wood-fired meats, and creative vegetarian options that go far beyond a token salad.
This guide focuses on the cityβs pizza scene, which has quietly become one of the strongest in the Charente-Maritime region. From strict Neapolitan purists to modern French interpretations topped with local goat cheese and honey, the pizzerias here reflect the cityβs dual identity as both a historic port and a forward-looking food destination. These are places where the flour is often imported from Italy, the tomatoes are crushed by hand, and the ovens are treated with near-religious reverence.
What makes a great pizza in La Rochelle is the same thing that makes a great seafood platter here: respect for the ingredient. The best spots are not trying to reinvent the wheel. They are simply sourcing better mozzarella, fermenting their dough longer, and baking at temperatures that produce a leopard-spotted crust with a soft, airy interior. It is a simple formula, but one that requires patience and skill.
For visitors staying in the historic center, most of these pizzerias are within easy walking distance of the Vieux Port, the Tour de la Lanterne, and the arcaded streets of the old town. For locals, they are reliable neighborhood fixtures, the kind of places you book on a Thursday night when you cannot face cooking. Either way, you will want to arrive hungry and, in many cases, book ahead, especially during the summer festival season.
Below is a curated list of the best pizza spots in La Rochelle, selected for their consistency, atmosphere, and commitment to craft. Each entry has been chosen because it offers something distinct, whether that is a particular dough style, a memorable setting, or a creative topping combination you will not find anywhere else.

Mamma Mia. This is a gem of a find and a fantastic new addition to La Rochelle. Itβs New York style pizza that is proper tasty. The prices are super competitive and itβs up there with some of the best pizza in town. Honestly you are throwing your money away if you are going to dominos instead of this place.

Best pizza in La Rochelle! It was very fresh and the flavors are clean. You can taste the quality of the ingredients and they are well balanced. The crust is awesome- it is a mixture of crisp and chewy. Perfection! It's so good that even though you are full, you still want to eat another slice because the taste and texture is excellent.

I ordered with UberEats a Carciofi Napolitan Pizza π, a Lemonade and a Tiramisu at Nonno Leo Pizzeria. I must confess that I was quite disappointed with tonight's order. The expensive 16,90β¬ Pizza π was delivered more than an hour after the order was placed and came cold. Have to add that the Pizza π had nothing to do with a true Napolitan Pizza π; no thin crust nore thick extoriors. The 14β¬ Tiramisu had no texture or any coffee flavor to it. Moreover, the time of order preparation on the UberEat's delivery ticket was grosselly scratched out twice for different times (initially 7:49 / 8:00 / 8:19 / 8:09). To finish off, they stick a little note on the Pizza box explaining to people how to heat your Pizza π in the oven. What happens to people that order a Pizza π and have no oven to heat the pizza in (my case) ?
Basically, I would not recommend this place to anyone or maybe as a simple bar for a Lemonade or a soda pop. The Lemonade that they didnt make was the only thing I enjoyed.
I stay with the feeling I got ripped off and was invited to a cold diner this saturday night.

This is a review on the food I ordered and only that. The reviews are good so it was only a bad experience for me obviously.
So, it was hot and I just wanted a salad.... chicken salad....the worst chicken salad I've ever had both in presentation and quality. (see picture) It was absolutely shocking and a 3 year old could have made something better! Lettuce, stale croutons, and 'reformed chicken nuggets' Disgusting really.
Honestly, how any chef could have prepared that and thought it was acceptable to serve (especially at 17 Euros!!) is beyond me?
I was asked when paying if I had enjoyed it and I politely explained how bad it was and was told
'sorry... maybe you should have had a pizza!!!"
Incredible response!
I paid in full and had no dessert.
I have attached a photo of what a chicken salad should look like!

An Italian restaurant that is part of a chain, but I found the food excellent and the staff very welcoming. It was good value too at about 55 euros for 2, having 2 courses and a drink. The main thing that stood out was the freshness of the ingredients in the pizzas and a very good tomato sauce.

Great view of the port, and the food is even better than the view. Their pizza dough is perfect, try the "panuozzi" to fully enjoy it.

We arrived in La Rochelle in the evening after a long drive, and just wanted something quick and hot for dinner, something we could take back to our accommodation and chill out, and we are so glad we wandered past le Fratel'!
The menu is small, but I don't think there is any option someone wouldnt be able to choose - it's got all your expected options plus a couple more, but no crazy options, which is actually quite nice!
We waited around 20 minutes for 3 pizzas to take away, and you can see the big brick oven with the pizzas being made fresh.
It was always busy, but the staff were so lovely and friendly, very welcoming and did an amazing job of balancing take away orders with people sitting down in the restaurant. Truly the staff were so friendly!
And of course, the pizza was amazing! So fresh and the dough was perfect. I can't recommend it enough if you need a change from bistro food!

For years we've been eating bland, undercooked pizzas in La Rochelle, either at the port or the market, with few ingredients and high prices.
For years we've been searching for a real pizzeria.
Today, word of mouth led us to La Perla.

And we are delighted.
We chose the Stefano and Rossi pizzas;
Absolutely delicious.
The multigrain crust is flavorful, soft, and crispy.
The toppings are very generous.

One of the best pizzas.
We picked up our pizzas this Saturday evening, and they were ready right on time. The service was excellent.
The crust was neither too thin nor too thick, crispy yet soft, simply delicious. My partner, who has a big appetite, was full before he'd even finished his (the "Chicago Bliss").
I absolutely loved the "Bianca," which, in addition to being generously topped, was simply excellent! We also tried the cannoli (pistachio and chocolate), which were also very good.
One thing is for sure: if we come back to La Rochelle, we'll definitely be ordering our pizzas here again.

Excellent pizza, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The welcome was warm, both from the cook and the server, who were incredibly pleasant from start to finish.
I ordered the Toscana pizza, and it even solved a small problem I often have in pizzerias: I prefer a Regina (or Royale) style pizza without mushrooms, but it's almost always served with them. Here, the Toscana was exactly what I was looking for, a sort of Regina without mushrooms, so that was really great. A very good experience, I'll definitely be back.

Absolutely delicious pizza's and the staff are super, super friendly. They have a small table / counter and 7 high chairs if like us you want to sit in..
The 'wood fired' pizza's served here (which come in 3 size options 26cm, 29cm & 33cm) knock the rubbish you get in the restaurants located in the centre of La Rochelle out of the park... If you're on hire bikes, it's easy to get to.. Highly recommend..

Friendly guys, ordered pizza over the counter, it was ready in 5 mins. Also have a fridge with beer and wine. Although good big wine shop 50 metres away. Place was clean and parking right outside the door. A better quality option than Dominos in Saint Maurice.

After an amazing weekend in La Rochelle and Il de RΓ© we found ourselves stranded without a way to reach the airport. We passed this lovely pizzeria and decided to stop and ask to use the phone to call a taxi.
It was so cozy and welcoming, and the staff was so kind, that while we waited for the car to arrive, we decided to ask for a pizza. And it was amazing! Made in the moment, baked in a fire oven and it tasted so good.
Highly recommend the food and a high five to the staff.

Tips for Choosing the Right Pizzeria in La Rochelle
With so many solid options, narrowing down your choice can feel overwhelming. The key is to think about the kind of evening you want before you look at a menu. A romantic date under timber beams calls for a different spot than a fast, casual bite with kids before bedtime. Here are a few practical tips to help you make the right call.
Book ahead on weekends and during the summer. La Rochelle is a popular tourist destination, and the best pizzerias fill up quickly, especially between July and September. A quick phone call or online reservation can save you a long wait on a crowded pavement.
Check the oven type before you go. If you care about a puffy, blistered crust, look for places that advertise a wood-fired or high-temperature stone oven. Electric conveyor ovens are rare in the better spots here, but the difference in texture between a 90-second bake and a 6-minute bake is significant.
Ask about the flour and fermentation. The best pizzerias in La Rochelle are happy to talk about their dough. Listen for terms like βlong fermentation,β βbiga,β or βtipo 00.β If the staff seem enthusiastic about their flour blend, the pizza is likely to be excellent.
Look beyond the margherita. While a classic margherita is the best test of a pizzeriaβs baseline skill, La Rochelleβs creative toppings are worth exploring. Local goat cheese, Atlantic seafood, and regional honey often appear on specials. Do not be afraid to order something you have never tried.
Consider the location and your post-dinner plans. Some of the best pizzerias are tucked away on quiet side streets, while others sit directly on the port. If you want to continue your evening with a walk along the harbor or a drink at a nearby bar, choose a spot that keeps you in the center of the action.
Check whether they do takeaway. Several top pizzerias offer excellent takeaway service, which is ideal if you want to eat on the quay, in your hotel room, or on the beach at Les Minimes. Just be aware that a pizza eaten straight from the box will never be as crisp as one served on a warm plate.
The pizza scene in La Rochelle has matured to the point where it can hold its own against much larger French cities, and the best tables here would not feel out of place in Naples or Rome. What makes the experience special is the setting: the salt air, the old stone, the sense that you are eating something simple and honest in a city that has always understood the value of good ingredients.
Whether you are a local rediscovering your own streets or a visitor mapping out your first meal by the port, these pizzerias offer a delicious way into the rhythm of the city. Take your time, order a glass of something cold, and let the crust do the talking.
