For Muslim travelers and those who prefer halal dining, the search for suitable restaurants can sometimes feel challenging in a region traditionally dominated by French and European cuisine. However, the demand for high-quality halal food has grown significantly in recent years.

It's a truly heartwarming place. It feels like visiting good friends: delicious home-cooked food, a cozy atmosphere, and incredibly warm hospitality. It's clear the owners put their heart and soul into this place, and that's what makes you want to come back. We tried chicken kebab, liver shashlik, and muhammara with walnuts - everything was delicious.

Some of the best food we’ve found in the area, hands down. Hand made with care and attention, served by family with a smile (and excellent English!). The hot vine leaves, kibbeh galette, shawarma, knafeh, and cardamom-laden baklava were all stunning. Will be returning for sure!

Delicious. Everything is homemade inhouse which is a luxury in today’s world. Also feels healthy despite very generous portions. Authentic too. High high recommend

Small, family-run restaurant-bar offering Middle Eastern cuisine, with charming service and very tasty, fresh food made on-site. Prices are very affordable, and the atmosphere is warm and home-like—just like during a much-appreciated family visit. Everything is advised, prepared, and served by the owners themselves, which makes the experience truly personal and authentic. Although the place itself does not give the impression of fine dining, the culinary experience is of top quality. There is also a takeaway service available. I wish there were more such authentic and genuinely customer-friendly places.

This is a lovely little cafe in a quiet part of Carcassonne run by a very friendly Iraqi couple. Being vegetarian we were really after something more wholesome after weeks away. Mhammara, lentil salad, baba ganoush, and falafel with salad and frites. All was wonderful. I wouldn’t say it’s a choice for a romantic evening meal but at lunchtime it was fabulous.

Food was delicious, and the staff was welcoming. I had the harira and chicken pastilla and beef sambousa. My husband had the chicken. Portions were very good vs price.
Calguiri★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic - especially for the price! My wife and I had a pastilla & salad and chicken burger & fries, with a drink each, for €17 total!!! In 2025!!! Cheap as mcdonalds but far, far, far better quality, much much tastier, and, of course, actually* filling. Literally wouldn’t believe this could exist in this day and age in a western country if I hadn’t been there myself. Fairly new but suspect will become very popular. TL;DR fantastic food for the price - like going back 15 years. ***Thoroughly Recommend***

Terrible place. It looks dirty. My eggs were drowned in oil. Ham and cheese ultra processed- cheese was a portion of “La vache que rie”., juice concentrated. It was all advertised as Morroquien Brunch so I thought I will get something fresh. Very slow service. Coffee was good though.
Susan Stewart★★★★★
We found this lovely Morrocan cafe on a cold rainy night, what a find! Absolutely amazing food all hand made on premises and delicious. The service was good and had everything explained to us. Highly recommend for food lovers. Children might struggle for choice. Prices are really good we paid 9€ each couldn't fault it.

We totally lucked out finding this awesome spot on our way to Carcassonne La Cité from our hotel! 🤩The smell coming from the shop was just too good to pass up, so we had to check it out. We hadn't tried anything before, but everything we ordered was super tasty and really cheap! The girls working there didn’t speak much English, but they were super friendly and even tried chatting with me in Spanish since I can speak the Language, If you're in Carcassonne, you’ve got to give this place a try! ❤️"

It was the first meal I had in Carcassonne. The time was late, nothing else was opened so I opt for this local fast food place. It was busy despite it was late with lots of locals. Had an XL chicken tacos. It was delicious with cheese sauce. They serve more than tacos and see a few other people ordered pizza as well, may try it again if I have time.

Avoid at all costs. Reviews looked good so gave it a go, wanted the kebab bowl with chips but they refused to serve it as they I think couldn’t be bothered so I got the steak bowl. There were about 5 chips under a mountain of sauce it was drowning. Awful.

The food was delicious, and they gave us a bottle of water as a gift for my baby girl. We didn’t speak french but they did an effort to serve, and very nice in general.

The dishes are full of depth and flavour — from the starters to the couscous and tagines, everything felt carefully prepared and generously served. The owners are welcoming and attentive, creating a calm and genuine atmosphere. Service is steady and personal without being intrusive. A very good address in Carcassonne for Moroccan cuisine, whether you’re looking for a rich tagine or a lighter vegetarian plate.

On a rainy Sunday night in Carcassonne we found this lovely restaurant. Smiling and friendly staff and delicious food. The menu is only small but I like that as it usually means what they do is excellent. I had the lamb tagine with prunes and almonds, my friend had the salmon and frites. The lamb was superb, tasty and tender. We both finished with the tarte tatin. A gorgeous memorable meal.
Pedro★★★★★
The food is great! I had really missed Moroccan cuisine. When I found out about this place, I immediately decided to give it a try, and I’m so glad I did. I ordered a delicious Couscous au Poulet et aux Légumes (€ 17,5), and it tasted amazing. But the food was just part of the experience. The excellent service from the owners made it even better. Even though I speak very little French, they made a real effort to communicate with me (the Italian gentleman who served me spoke a bit of English and Spanish, which helped a lot). Many thanks to the owner, Naima, for the warm hospitality! I definitely recommend Le Comptoir!

I’m not sure that I would call it Thai Food but it sure was tasty. The Krispy Chicken should become a comfort food the world around. How can one go wrong? Crispy Chicken, some spice, rice with a sauce. Just plain solid. The Pad Thai was genuinely tasty- and yes, that does count as Thai Food.

I’m sorry to tell you this, but this might be the best kebab menu in Carcassonne right now 😂🔥 I honestly thought this was such a small town that I wouldn’t find good food here, but I was completely wrong. The owner was super kind, professional, and welcoming. The kebab was genuinely delicious, the fries were hot and perfectly cooked, and everything was fresh and tasty. The only thing I’d recommend is checking the salt, as it was a little salty for my taste. Definitely recommend this place if you’re in Carcassonne! 👌

While visiting Carcassonne castle, we did not feel to eat the traditional cassalot which is served there in all restaurants. Going outside from the castle we found this little place. Little English spoken but we could order easily from the nice, kind girl in duty. Food was good and in large portions. Good for the meal of the day! Recommended!

Affordable but very tasty. People who serve were very kind and it looks like a very clean place. I’m not giving them 5 stars because it was a bit too salty for my taste.

The worst kebab and tacos in town. The food was disappointing low quality, poorly prepared, and not worth the price. I do not recommend this restaurant, there are much better options nearby. Save your money and stay away.

I can't even say the food is that amazing (though, the sauces are). But this restaurant is so freaking iconic that I can't even describe it. It's French Taco Bell, but it's so tryhard and trying to be chic that it's one of the most epic places you'll ever walk into. Definitely get the Indian bowl or tacos, because the curry sauce was easily the best part of this place. This is one of those places that feels stranger than fiction: the French creating their own Taco Bell is not something I ever expected. This is a must-try; it's just too iconic to not go.

An incredibly warm welcome, a charming and exotic setting for a relaxing break between the train station and the medieval town on the rather dreary Rue Georges Clemenceau. A wonderful discovery during my stay in Carcassonne. We had reserved a table for 8 pm and were served quickly despite the crowd (Friday evening, a public holiday). The service was pleasant, and the food was delicious! I had the pasta with pepper sauce, and my sister had the four-cheese pizza with burrata. There was a very generous portion of pasta; I was quite full. It's rare to find such large quantities of homemade pasta in restaurants! The pizza was flavorful; you could really taste the smoky aroma from the oven—it was delicious. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the dishes are as beautiful as they are tasty. In short: if you enjoy good food, I highly recommend it! 👏🍝🍕

Tips for Finding Halal Food in Carcassonne

Navigating the dining scene in a city steeped in French culinary tradition requires a bit of local knowledge and planning. While the number of dedicated halal restaurants is growing, the majority of traditional French brasseries and fine dining establishments in the Cité do not offer halal meat. To ensure a satisfying and stress-free experience, it is helpful to keep a few practical strategies in mind when searching for your next meal.

1. Look for Maghreb and Mediterranean Cuisine
The most reliable way to find halal meat in Carcassonne is to seek out restaurants specializing in Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, or Lebanese cuisine. These establishments almost exclusively source halal meat as a standard part of their culinary practice. They also offer hearty, flavorful dishes like couscous, tajine, and grilled brochettes that are perfect after a long day of sightseeing.

2. Inquire About "Viande Halal" Specifically
If you are dining at a kebab shop or a fast-food outlet, do not assume every item is halal. While many kebab shops in France use halal meat (often turkey or chicken), some may mix in non-halal options like merguez sausage or bacon. Always look for a visible "Viande Halal" certificate or sticker on the window, and politely confirm with the staff that the meat is halal.

3. Plan Around Prayer Times and Lunch Hours
French dining hours are quite strict compared to other countries. Most restaurants in Carcassonne stop serving lunch around 2:00 PM and do not reopen for dinner until 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM. If you are visiting during Ramadan or need to eat outside these hours, plan to grab snacks or early meals at kebab shops or bakeries, which often remain open continuously throughout the day.

4. Check the Bastide Saint-Louis for Variety
While the medieval Cité is the main tourist draw, the "new" town (Bastide Saint-Louis) across the river is where the locals live and eat. You will find a higher concentration of affordable halal kebab shops, couscous restaurants, and Middle Eastern grills around Place Carnot and the surrounding streets. Prices here are generally more reasonable than inside the fortress walls.

5. Ask About Alcohol and Cross-Contamination
For stricter dietary observance, it is worth noting that many halal restaurants in France also serve alcohol to cater to the wider tourist market. If this is a concern for you, ask for a table away from the bar area or confirm whether the establishment is dry. Additionally, if you have severe allergies or strict halal requirements, ask if the fries or side dishes are cooked in separate oil from non-halal items.

6. Use Local Delivery Apps
If you are staying in a hotel or Airbnb and prefer to eat in, apps like Uber Eats and Deliveroo operate within Carcassonne. Searching for "halal" on these platforms can quickly filter available options and show you menus, ratings, and delivery times without having to walk around searching.

Exploring the culinary landscape of Carcassonne while adhering to a halal diet is entirely feasible with a little foresight. The city’s growing diversity means you can easily pair your visit to the historic fortress with the rich, aromatic flavors of North African stews or the satisfying simplicity of a well-made grilled kebab.

By focusing your search on the Bastide and the Mediterranean eateries, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—historic sightseeing and delicious, permissible dining. Bon appétit and safe travels.
