Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, is a city that engages all the senses. While its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and the iconic Cathédrale Notre-Dame often steal the spotlight, a quieter revolution has been brewing behind its medieval facades. The city has cultivated a vibrant specialty coffee scene that rivals much larger French metropolises.
For locals and travelers alike, finding the perfect spot to enjoy a meticulously pulled espresso or a velvety flat white is essential to experiencing the city’s rhythm. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner to work remotely, a sun-drenched terrace for people-watching, or a cozy nook to hide from the Norman rain, Rouen has a café tailored to your mood.
The shift from traditional French brasseries to modern, artisanal coffee shops has been significant here. Baristas are now treating coffee with the same reverence as sommeliers treat wine, focusing on bean origin, roasting profiles, and precise brewing methods. This dedication to craft has transformed the local culture, making coffee tasting a highlight of any visit.
However, navigating the sheer number of options can be overwhelming, especially if you only have a weekend in this beautiful city. You don’t want to waste your time on a mediocre cup when a world-class brew is just around the corner.
To help you cut through the noise, we have sipped our way through the Right Bank and the Left Bank. We’ve evaluated atmosphere, pastry quality, Wi-Fi reliability, and, most importantly, the quality of the roast.
Here is our curated list of the best coffee spots in the city of a hundred spires.

Cozy cafe with delicious food.
The pancakes are fluffy and flavourful which is excellent serve with bacon, egg and avocado.
The matcha latte is incredibly smooth and rich in flavour.
The pistachio latte is awesome which the rich, roasted pistachio taste in this latte is perfectly balanced with the sweetness. It's so delicious!
Everything looks so neat and tidy, it makes me feel so comfortable here.

Visited today (a Saturday lunchtime in Feb) had the vegan torte with roast veg which was excellent and tried both the pour over coffees which were great. Great friendly speedy service. Recommended for coffee lovers!

We came here as tourists, a family of 5 adults, two rowdy toddlers and two babies, and the staff were incredibly patient, kind and accommodating. The coffee was very good as well.

Great spot for breakfast or lunch. Vegan options on the menu which is refreshing. Also we received a really warm hospitality from the lady working there. We don't speak any French but it wasn't a problem as they spoke perfect English.

This is the place to come for excellent hospitality and superb tea. The cafe owner was very friendly and helpful as I sought comfort and solace from the rain of Rouen. As a non-coffee drinker, I was impressed by the emporium of tea choices, handmade by a business of two, and can recommend the La Fille De L'Hiver a fragrant alternative for earl grey lovers. This oasis is well worth a visit and felt as refined as the Museum of Fine Arts, one minute walk up the road.

I would say, it is an endorphin place, it is very welcoming and calm there, cosy, great place to work with a good view, they have a climatisation and Wi-Fi.
But, the main thing, - is a really good coffee in all its variations. Also, remarkably pleasant, - I could have a great full meal any moment, and I stayed at Cœur de cafe from 16h to 19h. Thank you, it is a great place.

Amazing coffee and best cookies ever!
For those, who prefers veggie milk - you can have it here!(which was impossible to find in Rouen before:))
Also, the service..I promise, you would have kindest people here, which will surround you with care, love and warmth🙌🤍

Lovely café in the heart of Rouen!
Coeur de Café is a cozy spot with amazing coffee and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and always make you feel at home. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a quiet moment in the city. The coffee is rich and flavorful, and the pastries are a great treat too. It truly feels like a home away from home. Highly recommended for a coffee break in Rouen!

One of the best places for specialty coffee in Rouen! ☕ Great location, cosy atmosphere, lovely staff, and most importantly, absolutely delicious coffee. Definitely recommend!
Berkay Ersoy★★★★★
I think the batch brew was slightly under extracted but the coffee was good in general, keep up the good work! A place where you can find pourover coffee. I didn't try the espresso, maybe next time.
Tamara★★★★☆
A little gem in Rouen for coffee lovers!
They offer great specialty coffee from top roasters like Tanat and Dak. They also have delicious desserts (their fresh strawberry tart was fantastic!)
However, I can’t give 5 stars in good faith because as much as I love the concept, I ordered an iced latte and it had 2 ice cubes (so it was lukewarm rather than cold) and what felt like 400ml of milk (and potentially a single shot given the fact that it just barely tasted of coffee).
So while the cake, service, and menu were excellent, my drink was awful. I did try my companion’s pour over and it was quite enjoyable. So there is hope and I’d still recommend it. Just clarify the amount of coffee and milk you actually want in your drink.
sarah hashem★★☆☆☆
I was in Rouen for the day and wanted to enjoy a good coffee, but unfortunately I was disappointed. I ordered an iced flat white, but it came with three small ice cubes and was barely cold. The coffee itself wasn’t enjoyable, and the atmosphere felt stressful rather than relaxing. Overall, it wasn’t the experience I was hoping for.
Regina Reynolds★★★★☆
Staff was super friendly and worked with me to communicate despite my limited French.
I got the golden latte, a cinnamon roll, and the granola bowl. The cinnamon roll and granola bowl were awesome, but I wasn't a huge fan of the golden latte. It wasn't bad, just not what I was expecting. If you're thinking about ordering it, be advised that it has a very specific taste.
The shop is located right off of a little square with some really cool surrounding buildings. Definitely a picturesque place to visit!

We visited this very cute and decent cafe while in Rouen to surprise my friend for her pre-birthday celebration, and it turned out to be such a pleasant experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming and they accommated us well. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for a casual hangout or a special occasion specially if you are a kpop fan.
Highly recommend trying their cruffle caramel with ice cream it was divine! And their lemonade was so refreshing. If you're ever in Rouen, this cafe is a must visit.

It was a pleasant surprise for us to discover this welcoming place early in the morning near our booked apartment!
The owner welcomed us with a warm expression, along with her daughter and we enjoyed a homemade breakfast in a simple familial space, with hints of an artistic and vintage atmosphere.
She's a really nice and cheerful person and it's a real joy to talk with her.
I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this place due to its hospitable atmosphere and delicious food and coffee!
Tim Brown★★★★★
We decided to stop for an early afternoon meal and were told by the owner that she wasn’t serving a full menu yet but did have some quiche and salad. We were fine with that, thinking we would get a little round quiche. Instead, we were given a large piece of incredibly excellent quiche made with Normandie cream, eggs, guyere, onions, camembert cheese. The taste was incredible and the quiche was cooked perfectly. The meal was fantastic and the proprietor was a joy to talk to. We highly recommend this place!

It felt like visiting a sister who is an excellent cook. Great atmosphere, great interaction with Clara, great food, and great prices. Clara treated us—and our country—very well. I forgot to mention the most important thing: it was the best beef tartare I have ever eaten.

Short review: Mixed at first, blown away by the end.
Long review:
The reviews were amazing so my expectations were high. Despite the cute french interior it felt more rural than i expected. The lady didn’t know what a flat white was, and after i explained it she made one for me and it was delicious.
But i actually came for breakfast. I saw the pictures online of bagles and eggs etc and i was looking forward to an amazing breakfast/brunch. Then she let me know there were no sweets today due to a delivery problem and when i asked for the menu it was basically just omelette/ham/cheese and plain eggs. The bagle was a lunch/brunch item. Rather dissappointed i was ready to finish my coffee and leave. I politely told the lady of my dissappointment after having seen the pictures online. Then she came back asking if i was in a hurry. I said no and after about 40 minutes they served me the meal in the picture.
Needless to say, I felt very special and well taken care of. 10/10, would recommend.

A no-frills home style restaurant with a kitschy interior and the face of the restaurant was the sweetest lady you ever met! Definitely very local and felt like we were not in the city. My brothers and I thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. Our café lattes were delicious and the croque madam was divine. I wish we could’ve tried more! Thank you for a pleasant meal.

DANIELA SIQUEROLO★★★★★
One of the best brunch’s we ever had! From food, service to atmosphere- absolutely spotless. The lady attended us in English and she was so kind! We ordered our food and coffee and had high expectations, due to the reviews we read before. They can not put into words how amazing food and coffee here are! Our toast was so good, I didn’t even know an avocado toast could be so delicious - it came with some green leaves and the dressing was matching the toast in a way I never had before. It was tasting like brunch, it was delicious. The coffee was also perfect. We had an oat milk capuccino and oat milk mocha - both perfect! To close the brunch we had a pistachio filled croissant and it was also very good (I preferred the toast, that was spectacular). The environment is also very good.. it was like a slow morning, in a busy Monday morning. I was delighted to be there, having that food and enjoying the peace around. The location is handy, close to city centre and main touristic attractions of the town. It was for sure the best brunch we had in Rouen and one of the top we ever had. Highly recommend!

It was a nice experience here. Good food - potato toasties was great.. although would have preferred more flavour in salty breakfast, the avocado in avacado toast was of less quantity/ had blackened around. The drinks was nice as well.

I arrived in Rouen for a day trip in the morning. While heading towards the city, I came across this café and decided to stop by for a caramel macchiato. It turned out to be the best coffee I’ve ever had in my life. After lunch, I visited again in the afternoon. The atmosphere inside the café was great—well-organized, stylish, and inviting. The staff were also incredibly friendly, and I truly appreciated that they remembered us. I wish there were a café like this in my hometown. This place has the best meal I've had in France!!(Seasonal bagel) Definitely worth the visit. We come to Rouen every year and we were pleasantly surprised to find more vegetarian options. Atmosphere is great, super friendly service (even spoke English, which is a plus!), and overall just amazing. These ladies definitely put in hard work and love into this restaurant and it shows!
Will be coming back next year ✨

Not very nice welcoming. You are asked if you will eat or only drink. If it is only for drinking then suddenly there is only one table available even though cafe was half empty. Then we did order a granola bowl for 7eu, which was the adult edition (!!!). Yoghurt was less than 100ml with 4 small pieces banana, 1 tea spoon granola and 2 tea spoons jam... There are way too many better addresses in Rouen where you can drink/eat vegan, so don't waste your time here.

Mick Catala★★★★★
Meeting finished early. Three hours to spare. Where can I get Internet, power, coffee and maybe something to eat without feeling guilty. Wandered into the old town and found this joint just down the road from the fancy clock.
Roomy, with quirky blackboards and pictures. Lots of bits and pieces from regular clients adorn the walls. Large clean and fresh toilet/ bathroom. I sat at a breakfast bar on a stool with a power outlet right there. In fact every sitting spot has a power outlet and there are power plates as well for those who have matching devices.
Staff were sound, efficient and very friendly after the obligatory French gruff phase was over 🙂
Coffee was good, hot and tasty.
I had a tasty gratin for lunch and later I lost my brookie cherry. Like all nice things it was a guilty pleasure.
Anyway, great place and I got 3 bonus hours of work done with good food and coffee - perfect!

This is a cozy coffee shop conveniently located with a fantastic view of the Saint Maclou Church. After admiring the gothic architecture and taking pictures of the church, we headed into the shop for some much needed morning coffee.
We ordered the Méthode Douce, which is the filter coffee. The coffee was good and was plenty. If you're planning to visit the church, you might as well stop by here for some coffee as well!
DANIELA SIQUEROLO★★★★★
Such a nice surprise! The food was so tasty, prepared with quality ingredients - we could feel the freshness and the taste was just delicious. The wine I was recommended was for sure the best I had during my whole trip. The service is attentive and the guy was really patient explaining me the different wine options. The location is a plus! Just in front of the church. You can sit inside or outside - and both ways you can enjoy the view! They also have coffee and pastries - which I haven’t tried as was later in the day. But them all looked amazing! I highly recommend, a must when in Rouen!

What a great find! This is a charming little café right in the heart of the city. The menu is simple, short but absolutely delicious! We had a three course lunch and each one was perfect. The staff are delightful and when there wasn't a table for our party of three, a couple of customers offered their table to us and moved to a smaller one. Definitely recommend.

This place was honestly so wonderful. Probably the best service and maybe best view I had in three weeks of travelling in France, and really wonderful coffee, inventive and delicious pasta, and also a refreshing and perfectly balanced cocktail. Also great prices!

How to Choose the Best Café Experience in Rouen
Finding a great café in Rouen is rarely just about the caffeine; it is about the atmosphere, the timing, and knowing what you need from the space. The city offers a spectrum of experiences, ranging from bustling, high-turnover bars to quiet, laptop-friendly lounges. To ensure you have the best possible experience, you should consider the local rhythm of the day and what you want to achieve while you are there.
1. Understand French Coffee Sizes
If you are coming from North America or Australia, be prepared for smaller sizes. A standard "café" is a small shot of espresso. If you want something larger, look for a "café allongé" (an Americano) or specifically ask for a "latte" or "cappuccino" at specialty shops, as they will be familiar with these terms.
2. Timing Matters for Pastries
The French are strict about their baking schedules. If you want a fresh croissant or pain au chocolat, arrive before 10:00 AM. Many artisan cafés bake in limited batches; once they are sold out, they are gone for the day, leaving only cookies or cakes for the afternoon crowd.
3. Check the "No Laptop" Rules
Rouen’s café culture is increasingly protective of the lunch hour. Many of the top specialty cafés have implemented policies restricting computer use during lunch (12:00 PM – 2:00 PM) and on weekends. Always check the signage or ask the barista before setting up a workstation to avoid awkwardness.
4. Embrace the Terrace Culture
Rouen is a walkable city, and coffee is often best enjoyed outdoors. Even on slightly chilly days, many cafés provide blankets and heat lamps on their terraces, particularly in the Place du Vieux Marché or near the Gros Horloge. Don’t hide inside if the sky is merely overcast; the people-watching is part of the price of the coffee.
5. Look for Local Roasters
To get the true taste of Normandy, look for cafés that use local or French roasters. Beans from roasters like Café Lomi or local micro-roasters in the Seine-Maritime region ensure you are tasting something unique to France, rather than an import you could get anywhere in the world.
Rouen is a city that rewards the curious. While the majestic cathedral and the tragic history of Joan of Arc draw the crowds, it is often the small moments—like the perfect sip of coffee in a hidden courtyard—that create the most lasting memories of a trip.
Whether you are fueling up before a day of museum hopping or winding down after an afternoon of shopping in the antique district, the café scene here offers a warm welcome. Take your time, order a second cup, and enjoy the unique blend of medieval history and modern culinary craft that defines this Norman capital.
