Aix-en-Provence is a city that moves to the rhythm of clinking espresso cups and the murmur of conversation drifting from sun-dappled terraces. Known for its golden limestone facades, bubbling fountains, and vibrant market culture, this Provençal gem offers a café scene that is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the coffee.
Finding the perfect spot to pause between visiting Cézanne’s studio and browsing the antique markets can be overwhelming with so many choices dotting the winding streets. Whether you are seeking a quick shot of caffeine, a leisurely brunch, or a glass of chilled Rosé while people-watching, the city caters to every mood and moment.
The essence of Aix lies in its outdoor living, where locals linger for hours over a single noisette, debating philosophy or simply soaking in the Mediterranean sun. From historic institutions that have served intellectuals for decades to modern specialty roasters pushing the boundaries of bean quality, the variety is remarkable.
To truly experience the city like a local, you need to know where to find the creamiest cappuccinos and the flakiest croissants. This curated guide focuses on venues that offer not just excellent beverages, but also prime locations, beautiful interiors, and that distinct, unhurried Provençal charm.
We have walked the cobblestones, tasted the tarts, and judged the strength of the brews to bring you the essential list of stops for your next visit. Whether you are a digital nomad needing reliable Wi-Fi or a traveler craving a sweet treat, these addresses promise a memorable respite.
Without further ado, here are the definitive places to sit back, relax, and watch the world go by in the heart of Provence.

This was one of my favorite spots in all of Aix which is saying something since it’s just a coffee shop. They had an incredible matcha and coffee menu. The staff was so helpful and nice, and lots of people working and studying inside. Not to mention the aesthetic of the place was perfect and it’s on a quiet little street. I had the Honey Blossom Matcha and it was delicious.
Inger Margrete Hansen★★★★★
Café Adoré quickly became my favourite stop in Aix. Maya’s philosophy of treating matcha with the same care as specialty coffee shines through in every cup.
The matcha brownie was heavenly, and I still regret not buying a matcha mug. I suppose that just gives me the perfect excuse to return.
Song Song★★★★★
Such an adorable cafe! Really good location, with calm vibe! And I also enjoy the matcha latte& the cake! 💚
Vasile Visotchi★☆☆☆☆
The coffee is really good! Why one star? Because what you really want in a summer morning to drink with the coffee is some cold tap water. Unfortunately, the glasses were really dirty, they had some traces of the lips from the last customers. My girlfriend’s glass was dirty too. And when I went to exchange the glass, I had a hard time finding a clean one. That’s a no go for a coffee shop! They also give you free stickers for a 5star review, which perhaps explains their high rating despite providing mediocre atmosphere and cold reception… and of course insalubrious glasses. I’d visit again this coffee shop only for take away.

The shop is so cuteeee👼🏻💘Personally think the matcha latte is best in town!

This place was such a good find. Great brunch menu (I had Summer pancakes with strawberries and basil) and a fresh juice. The food is delicious - you won’t regret a visit - it’s busy for a reason! The staff were so hard working and welcoming with our dog especially Maeva - thank you for your kindness, we will be back!

Visiting from New Zealand and so happy to find a great cafe for brunch and lunch. We enjoyed our meals and the service was 10/10. Highly recommend.

Wonderful place and amazing plates
Thank you Maeva for this moment
Alice Nowak★★★☆☆
All the food looks nice but I wasn’t so impressed. I felt very rushed to leave the table as they were constantly clearing things from the table as we were eating. The hot drinks were not very hot and the cold drinks were not very cold. The avocado crossaint was nice but I was not impressed by the pancakes, they were quite dry and tasteless.

Great café with a lovely couple running it! We stayed in Aix for four days, and every morning we came here for coffee. The cold flat white was excellent, and the friendly atmosphere made us feel very welcome. Highly recommended! ✨❤️

Service is absolutely excellent. Shortly after I settled at the table, a glass of water arrived. This is unexpected and so very appreciated. The cappuccino has a good coffee and cream ratio, that I could taste the coffee and didn't need to add sugar. The location is also calm.

Adorable coffee shop with a spacious interior. They have some merchandise as well and a children’s play area. The two men at the bar were very friendly and kind. The coffee was great and the atmosphere was peaceful.

Top place. Family owned and you notice immediately. The service you get from the moment you walk in is spectacular - you’d think you’re in a high end restaurant.
The double espresso (Brasil beans at the time) was awesome. My girlfriend loved the matcha latte (and she has tasted a ton of them). I had the crumble special dessert of the day homemade by the sister owner - it tasted wonderful, a good mix of homemade, not too much sugar and fresh ingredients.
100% coming back when I’m in the city. I wish this family the best success with their newly opened shop. You can tell they’re trying hard (and succeeding)
Antoine C★★★★★
Lovely specialty cafe with great home made food and pastries. Breakfast was tasty, freshly made and very generous.
Coffee made with a lot of attention and skill - 10/10
Super friendly service, passionate owners - great new addition and finally a place with great coffee in Aix!
You’ll also find specialty coffee beans roasted by Fève (Paris)

Cute little Cafe for coffee and brunch. We arrived after the kitchen was closed yet they were nice enough to accommodate our food order. Friendly doggie has his spot in the window.

When in Aix we always hit Tita across the street for lunch, and wanted to find a great coffee spot nearby and discovered Maiipo! These sisters that own the place are so hospitable and welcoming. My coffee was great and wanted to support their business more so they helped me pick a perfect bag of coffee for mornings on the rest of my trip. They truly care about you enjoying the coffee they serve. You won't regret supporting this business!!

Very nice and authentic place in an otherwise quite touristy area. Properly done soft scramble with good seasoning served with incredible sourdough. Pancakes were fluffy and luxurious but not too sweet and very fruit forward. The smoothie was also well balanced. One of the best breakfasts I've had on the go.
Ozlem Geyik★★★★☆
I went for breakfast, it was a very hot day, around 10, I was lucky to find a table in shade. In half an hour it got crowded and the service was very slow. The food was ok
Philip Slingerland★★★★★
We came here after seeing great reviews and we were not let down. The service we experienced for lunch today was warm and welcoming. The server took the time to make sure we understood every ingredient on their menu (for us English speakers). And the food was phenomenal. Clearly fresh, in season, and satisfying dishes. Highly recommended.

The BEST chai latte I have ever had. Everything was spectacular. The chai was creamy with hints of cinnamon, the pear smoothie healed my weary soul, the sourdough bread was perfect, and the pancakes were thick, fluffy, beautifully arranged and delicious with a syrup that was subtly sweet. I only wish I were staying here longer. The cafe was very quiet and had many locals, so it was a nice place to enjoy a peaceful morning and enjoy the start of my day.
Fayth Liew★★★★★
Hearty, yummy, fresh-tasting food here! We loved it so much that we ate here twice in 3 days. You can tell the folks put in heart and effort into curating the seasonal menus ❤️ would definitely come back the next time!

We came here two days in a row for breakfast. Not only was the breakfast excellent, but the coffee was definitely a highlight. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed breakfast or brunch with friends.
Starting the day with a great cup of coffee is something this place truly offers. We even ended up buying some coffee beans to take home. The service was excellent as well. ☕️✨

I had a delicious brunch and good quality coffee here. They made espresso with Ethiopia single origin coffee and filter coffee with Peru coffee. But maybe type of coffee they use will probably keep changing. so satisfied that I drank every last drop.

Had a wonderful time at KAVA AIX! It’s usually a challenge to find a spot for a large group, but here it was incredibly easy to get a table for all of us. I tried the Eggs Factor — scrambled eggs with beans and truffle gouda — and it was absolutely delicious! High-quality food at very affordable prices. Highly recommend for a group brunch.

High-quality, delicious specialty coffee ☕️ and a very friendly team. They even took care to package the coffee I bought to take with me, which was such a lovely touch. The café itself is very cozy, and I’ll be happy to come back when I’m passing through the city again 😌

Great place to have a chat with friends over coffee. The Turkish coffee is great. I really like their Coconut Matcha. I’ve visited twice just for the Coconut Matcha. They have the best cheesecake in town!

Following the Cézanne trail — and finding a gem 💎
We were exploring rue Boulegon on the Cézanne trail — no. 23, where the painter spent his last years and died in 1906 (the marble plaque is beside the door), and no. 13, the old storefront where his father ran the family bank and young Paul briefly toiled before escaping to Paris and painting — when we stumbled on Mozaik at no. 35 and stopped for a cold drink
What a find !
Büşra and Fatih receive you as a guest rather than a customer — genuine, unhurried warmth.
The little shop is beautifully done, with hand-painted tiles and a few tables on the quiet street.
Everything is organic, the coffee is taken seriously (traditional Turkish coffee alongside the usual espresso drinks), and the counter of home-made treats — pistachio baklava included — deserved more time than we had.
We’ll be back to do it justice 😋
If you’re walking old Aix — this organic haven is barely two minutes from the Hôtel de Ville, three from the cathedral and the Richelme market, ten from the Cours Mirabeau — this is the perfect pause on Cézanne’s own street !
Highly recommended.
Jolee Snelling★★★★★
Best coffee place in Aix, hands down. I was there for three weeks this summer, my friend and I had such good relations with the owners, they are the loveliest people, always generous and welcoming. They brought you Turkish delights as little treats, they’re always so kind towards everyone. We went and said goodbye to them last week. I already miss this place so much. Everyone should know about them. Miss you guys 🤍

Stumbled across this cafe after stopping into the Chapelle Granet exhibition. Service was exceptional, my grilled cheese came out promptly with a delicious side salad and atmosphere was very relaxed. Cappuccino was 3,50 euros and grilled cheese was only 5,00 euros! Recommend for a mid day break 🙂

Great for coffee lovers, terrible for matcha lovers. The barista was very friendly and nice to talk to. I really wanted to love the matcha, but the quality was bad and it was not prepared properly. Please fix your matcha!

Best coffee in Aix in my opinion. Cappuccino always come nicely. 2nd floor space is nice to work with wifi and plug but when it gets more crowded it can be busy and loud (just on the weekends) Staffs are all sweet and attentive. Highly highly recommended 👍🏽
Marie Konan★★★★★
Really great frappe (3,50€). You can choose how much milk and sugar you want (less milk is very similar to a refreshing iced coffee) and if you take away it's served in a nice recyclable cup. They have several other beverages and the employees are very friendly. There wasn't an outside sitting area when we came but we just sat down on the stairs of the church just across. Definitely recommend this place!

Very central, yet no traffic. Great place to sit outside and enjoy a breakfast or brunch. Gets busy around midday, people from offices nearby getting a bite. Very friendly staff, wonderful food. The brunch offer gets you one healthy (yet tasty) dish and something sweet (I do recommend the pancakes here), as well as a hot and a cold drink. Coffee is excellent and the orange juice is fresh. Works great for Veggies.

We were visiting Aix from Canada and decided to check this place out. The main thing that stuck out about this place was the staff and service! Everyone was so friendly and made sure we were taken care of! The food also was great portions for the a la carte menu. We got the English muffin and the vegan avocado toast and loved them both. Thank you for making us feel welcome.

Honestly, as a special occasion once in a blue moon visit, this place is very much worth it.
A bit off the beaten track but once you find it, you are greeted with a wonderful Art Gallery Manor where out the back is the Café.
We came on a wonderfully sunny March day around lunch time and there was plenty of seating available in the courtyard so the waiter let us choose our table.
The waiters were very happy and friendly. We didn't feel unwelcome as tourists. They spoke very good English but even kept speaking French with me trying to spake it myself.
We looked at the menu and didn't once and they didn't mind that all we wanted was some drinks and pastries/sweets with a savoury to share between us.
We got the quiche/tarte of the day which was fromage et jambon and the pomme custard and almond tarte. Everything arrived fairly quick and was eaten in quick order as it was delicious. However due to the wonderfully peaceful and tranquil surroundings in the courtyard we tried to savour it as much as possible.
Overall it was an excellent experience with great service, food and surroundings. Especially just watching locals chat, laught and enjoy themselves. Whilst it is very expensive, this is the perfect place to take a loved one or small family for a special occasion. Can't go wrong. I will definitely be visiting again.
Thanks Café Caumont for making the time I spent there with my family so memorable

Tips for Enjoying the Café Culture in Aix-en-Provence
To make the most of your time in this sun-soaked city, it helps to understand the unspoken rules and local habits that govern the café terraces. The experience here differs significantly from the grab-and-go culture found in larger metropolitan hubs; it is an exercise in slowing down and savoring the moment. Here are some essential tips to ensure you blend in seamlessly and get the best value during your café hopping.
Embrace the Terrace Premium
In France, the price of your coffee often changes depending on where you sit. You will usually see two prices listed: one for the comptoir (standing or sitting at the bar) and one for the terrasse (the outdoor seating). Sitting on the terrace costs more because you are paying for the real estate and the view. If you are on a budget but still need caffeine, drink your espresso quickly at the counter like a true local.
Lunch Service Takes Priority
If you arrive at a café between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, be aware that many establishments transition into full restaurant mode. If you only want a coffee or a cold drink during these hours, you may be turned away from tables set for dining. Plan your coffee breaks for mid-morning (around 10:00 AM) or mid-afternoon (after 3:00 PM) to secure a prime seat without pressure to order a full meal.
You Must Ask for the Bill
Unlike in North America or parts of Asia, servers in Aix will never rush you by dropping the check on the table unrequested. It is considered rude to rush a customer. When you are ready to leave, catch the server’s eye and say "L’addition, s’il vous plaît." You could sit for three hours with an empty cup, and they will happily let you be.
Water is Free and Expected
When you order an espresso or any other drink, it is customary to be served a small glass of tap water alongside it. If it doesn’t arrive automatically, don’t hesitate to ask for a "carafe d’eau." Staying hydrated is key in the Provençal heat, and restaurants are legally obligated to provide free tap water to paying customers.
Look for the "Formule"
If you are stopping for a light breakfast or lunch, check the chalkboard for a "Formule" or "Menu du Jour." This is a set-price deal that usually includes a main dish and a coffee, or a pastry and a juice. It is almost always significantly cheaper than ordering items à la carte and is the best way to eat well while saving money for shopping.
Aix-en-Provence is a city best experienced without a rigid itinerary, allowing the aroma of roasting beans and the charm of the squares to guide your steps. While the historical landmarks will fill your camera roll, it is often the quiet moments spent on a shaded terrace that leave the most lasting impression of Provence.
So, pull up a wicker chair, order a café crème, and let the gentle hum of the fountains and the warmth of the sun dictate the pace of your day. In Aix, the café is not just a pit stop; it is the destination.
