15 Tourist Attractions in Avignon

Nestled along the banks of the Rhône River, Avignon is a city that feels like a living theatre of medieval grandeur and Provençal charm. While most travelers know it for a certain famous song about a bridge, the city’s true depth lies in its stunning architecture, vibrant markets, and artistic legacy. It serves as the perfect gateway to the Luberon region while offering enough cultural heft to stand entirely on its own.

Visiting Avignon is a sensory experience, blending the scent of lavender with the sight of honey-colored stone and the sound of church bells echoing through narrow lanes. As the historic seat of the Papacy in the 14th century, the city boasts a UNESCO-listed historic center that transports you back in time. Unlike sprawling metropolises, Avignon’s compact nature makes it an incredibly walkable and intimate destination.

Whether you are a history buff tracing the footsteps of popes, a foodie eager to taste Rhône Valley wines, or a family looking for interactive museums, this city delivers. The energy here is youthful, thanks to a large student population and the world-famous Festival d’Avignon, yet the atmosphere remains deeply rooted in tradition. It is a place where you can wander without a map and stumble upon hidden squares and quiet cloisters.

To truly appreciate Avignon, you must look beyond the main square and explore its layers of history, from Roman roots to modern street art. The city acts as a crossroads of culture, where Italian influences meet French sophistication. Every corner reveals a story, whether it is a carved façade, a bustling covered market, or a panoramic view from a rooftop garden.

This guide curates the essential experiences that define the essence of the city. We have prioritized sites that offer not just visual beauty, but historical context and genuine local flavor. By focusing on quality over quantity, you can immerse yourself in the Provençal lifestyle without feeling rushed.

From iconic landmarks to serene green spaces, these attractions represent the very best of what Avignon has to offer. Use this list to build an itinerary that balances sightseeing with the simple joy of sitting at a café terrace. Here are the must-visit spots to include on your journey through this remarkable city.

The Papal Palace in Avignon is a place I had dreamed of visiting for a very long time. It is incredibly beautiful, atmospheric, and absolutely massive — a place you truly need to experience in person. Take your time for it. Before visiting, grab a delicious ice cream, enjoy a cup of coffee, and then simply go and immerse yourself in this beautiful place — its atmosphere, incredible history, stunning gardens, spiral staircases, and the grand architectural vision of the entire palace. I highly recommend walking around Avignon first, then visiting the Papal Palace and truly soaking in the history of France — a magnificent country with an incredible heritage.
Mike Z★★★★☆
It is most popular visitor attraction in Avignon. The exterior architecture is grand and impressive, but not so much on the inside as there is no period furniture to make visit experience richer. Few rooms with leftover original frescos… Here is the positive note though: it is the only museum in the city open on Mondays.
Ktpearie★★★★★
The Palais des Papes is an absolute must-see in Avignon. The scale alone is extraordinary, and it is hard not to be impressed walking through a 14th-century palace that once stood at the center of the papacy in Europe. The Gothic architecture, massive halls, courtyards, and surviving painted rooms make the history feel unusually tangible. One of the defining sights of Avignon and an easy 5/5.
C J★★★★★
Just awe inspiring. We almost had every room to ourselves. We got there as it opened at 9am, which I recommend. It's just an incredible self guided tour through history. Each doorway leads to something new. I'll put a photo at the end, as I circled back in to see how busy it was at 10am... Yikes

Interesting. But I would say there are plenty more to see in Avignon and if one has a limited time choose carefully. Beautiful frescoes but not much paints.

I bet lots of tourists don't even know these gardens are here. But what a gem. When facing the Palace, walk up one of the ramps or stairs to the left and you'll eventually reach a high garden with the most magnificent views over the Rhone, Pont D'Avignon and city. We walked up around 7.30am and had the place almost to ourselves. Very peaceful with just the bird song. Highly recommend 🙌

Lovely garden easily accessible after visiting Palais des Papes. Seems to be very popular with local families (at mid-day Monday). Beautiful river views from the terrace, however I would not go out of the way to visit the park since it’s relatively small.

Nice place. One needs to pay for the visit. But it’s good since there are not much tourists there and you can do really nice pictures.
Dan Keahey★★★☆☆
It was okay but nothing spectacular. It might be more appealing if you didn’t have to pay just to walk out to the end of a half-way bridge. I did it because we were there, but I don’t think it’s a highlight of Avignon.
C J★★★★★
Takes around 20 minutes to see, there are extra rooms and info that would make it longer, but boy was it hot. Iit looks nicer from across the river to be fair though. We did it after the palace, so it felt a bit underwhelming even though it isn't.
Iain Bailey★★★★★
You have to go & dance in a circle. Its compulsory. Finding it from the Palais des Papes was a pain as signed route from park down was closed (safety fencing & hazard tape) so alternate route down required hundreds of steps. Better to do the Bridge the walk to the Palais. Also with the Mistral howling it was very windy on the bridge! Still compulsory for all learning French at school!
Yalcin Aslan★★★★★
I spent around 20 minutes at the Pont d’Avignon**, and it was absolutely worth it. The bridge, though only partially standing today, carries so much history and charm. Walking along the remaining arches with the Rhône River flowing below and the old city walls in the background feels like stepping into a living postcard. Even in a short visit, you get a real sense of Avignon’s medieval past — the connection between the bridge and the nearby Palais des Papes is fascinating. The site is peaceful, with lovely views over the water and the surrounding countryside. For just 5 EUR, it’s a quick but meaningful stop — perfect for anyone exploring Avignon and wanting a glimpse of its history and beauty in under half an hour. Visited: October 10, 2025 Duration: ~20 minutes Highlights: The historic arches, river view, and quiet atmosphere that captures the spirit of old Avignon.

Very nice experience seeing a lot of Avignon in a short time. We only had about an hour and we had tired children, so this was perfect. The audio description was interesting. Easy to get tickets at the starting point.
Ariana Cela★★★★★
An experience not to be missed- a very good exposition of Avignon character and offering and a very good value for money.
Dianne Padgham★★★★★
Comfortable mini tourist train with excellent sound system and commentary. Good value.
Anders Nielsen★★★★☆
The train is fun and good value at €10 per person. We took it because my grandfather has limited walking endurance and wouldn’t have been able to see the city otherwise. Regrettably, the departure point is rather hard to reach for anyone with limited mobility. One cannot simply take a bus or taxi to Place du Palais - you have to walk a ways uphill to get there. It would be nice if they had a departure point near the cruise ships or the train station.
Greg Treadway★★★★★
We had a lovely time on the train going around town. You can cover the same ground on foot, but the train is a nice way to see it all and not be winded. For the money, you can't beat it. Headphones are provided with some history lessons. Well worth it!! A+

The best place for visiting 30/07/26 entrance was for free. 3 floors with amazing art! Very good bravo 🫶🏻🤍🙏🏻
Joelle Schepenaar★★★★☆
Free museum definitely worth your time, if not for the art at least for the gorgeous interior of the building. Some upstairs rooms were closed off but since I didn’t see them no clue what I’m missing, but, it’s a free museum!
Josh★★☆☆☆
They have some wonderful art, but they also had the lights off in some of their galleries, had other galleries closed off, and herded is out a half hour before they even close. Make sure you go early, and pay attention to their seasonally changing hours.
Changster00★★★★★
It's free museum but it's world class museum with many old masters paintings. I especially like the methods of how they made paints in the past. Too bad my French is not very good cos very few descriptions are in English and it's mostly just who's the painter and title.
J T★★★★★
Opened in 1976, this FREE (yes apparently it’s free) wonderful museum that is located in the main square (at the side of the Palais des Papes) has fantastic collection of Renaissance paintings of Avignon. It’s a very easy and relaxing place so do take your time and just enjoy.

Very interesting museum. The collection has some great pictures in a lovely building. The likes of Alain Derain, Pablo Picasso, Cezanne, Manet, Degas, Modigliani are all to be viewed here. The staff are very kind and helpful and the building very well maintained and clean. Definately worth a visit if you are at all interested in art.
Morag Scott-Smith★★★★☆
Really interesting museum/gallery. I enjoyed learning about the life of the collector and how the art was passed on to his grandson and his wife, both also artists, whose work is displayed on the top floor. Charming!
Julia Helland★★★☆☆
We went in this museum bc the big art museum that day was sadly closed! The ticket 8 euros I think it is too much for what you will see there. Not much famous paintings 🖼️ I would say it is ok museum if I did not see it I would not cry over it 🙂
Matthew★★★☆☆
Great little collection. It would have been nice if I could see the labels and the artworks themselves. Would have left immediately if I was not accompanying someone. To the curator, are you aware it possible to have modern quality LED lighting that is very low UV?
Craig Towers★★★☆☆
I’m not sure what people see in this museum. Sure it has a few notable paintings. The Picasso. However the whole museum is kind of dark and dingy. The Picasso is weirdly displayed up high with no real focus. There is a kind of weird old Grandmother’s old bedroom smell in some of the rooms. Better options for Art museums in Town.

The place itself is stunning and has unique architecture. This is signature of Avignon city. When reaching here you also can enjoy yourself in the old town square, shopping, ice cream or have lunch here.
Keusen Kay★★★★★
The Place du Palais in Avignon is a stunning and historic square that immediately impresses with its grandeur and atmosphere. Framed by the awe-inspiring Palais des Papes, one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe, this square is a must-visit for history lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re sipping a coffee at one of the cafés or simply soaking in the view, the Place du Palais offers a unique blend of medieval history and vibrant modern life. Street performers often liven up the square, adding to its charm and making it feel truly alive. Fun Facts: • The Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) was the seat of the Catholic popes in the 14th century when the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon. • The square was once the main gathering place for medieval markets and public events — a tradition that continues today with festivals and open-air performances. • During the annual Festival d’Avignon, the Place du Palais becomes an open stage and hub of cultural activity. • The cobblestone surface of the square is made of locally sourced stone and has been preserved to maintain the historical feel. Whether you’re visiting for its historical significance or just enjoying the ambiance, Place du Palais is an unforgettable experience that connects you to the heart of Avignon’s past and present.
Seokjin Ham★★★★★
Located directly in front of the Palais des Papes, this expansive stone square has served as the heart of political, religious, and civic life in Avignon since the papal court relocated here in the 14th century. Today, it functions as one of the central stages for the renowned Festival d’Avignon.
Dr Charbel Chedrawy★★★★★
La place du Palais is indeed a beautiful agora in the heart of Avignon where you can visit the castle and have a tour in the old town and rest in this wonderful place to have lunch or coffee. A beautiful place to rest after visiting le Pont D'avignon. Enjoy...
Brendan Mccormack★★★★☆
We arrived as the town was preparing for the annual festival and they were building a huge seating platform in the main courtyard of the Palais, so our experience was not great. The tour direction was changed and the audo guide made.no sense...we feel we missed out on a few highlights. It's a small complaint but did impact on a visit we were looking forward to for many months. Visitors in June beware you don't arrive just before the festivals.

What a stunning church on the outside this is , unfortunately on our visit we didn’t get to look around on the inside which is a real shame . Avignon is a great place to visit you won’t be disappointed.

Absolutely stunning gothic basilica with incredible carved wooden doors. Building begun in 1358 and Pope Innocent VI erected it as a collegiate church. Absolute must see.

Took us a while to find the entrance at the side. Once you're inside, you'll see it's beauty. It's very dark as well.

This Gothic church reflects the religious atmosphere of 14th-century Avignon during the Papal period. It is renowned for its richly carved wooden portal created in the 16th century. Inside, it features a Baroque-style altar.

Palais du Roure in Avignon is a fascinating historical site with a lot to offer, but my experience was a bit mixed. The building itself is beautiful, steeped in history, and full of charm. The collection of artifacts, furniture, and artwork provides a unique glimpse into the life and culture of Avignon’s past, making it an interesting place to explore. However, I found that the visit could have been more enjoyable with better guidance and information. The lack of clear signage and explanations made it difficult to fully appreciate the significance of many exhibits. A guided tour or more detailed descriptions would have greatly enhanced the experience, helping visitors to better understand the historical context and stories behind the items on display. Overall, Palais du Roure is worth a visit for history enthusiasts, but be prepared to navigate it on your own. With a little more attention to visitor information, it could be a truly exceptional experience.
David Smith★★★★☆
Nice, small museum with some furnished rooms, paintings etc. Free to enter.
Mike Zito★★★★★
This palace was built in 1469 and was created from a tavern and several smaller residences by Pierre Baroncelli from Florence. In the 1790s it was converted to a hotel often frequented by Frederic Mistral. It was later acquired by the city of Avignon. The museum is free and worth a tour. There is now a special exhibit on the French cowboy/movie star Joe Mamman.
Georges Younes★★★★★
Avignon has several museums that you can visit at no charge. Palais du Roure is one of them. A visit will provide a look at an old bourgeois residence and a slice of Provençal history at the same time. Definitely worth the detour.
Bart Eekhaut★★★★☆
This gothic residence was renovated in the 17th century to become le palais du Roure. Les Baroncellis lived here for almost 500 years. It currently houses a collections of paintings and artefacts, amongst which some ancient bells, from the provence region. Free to visit.

We really enjoyed visiting Musée Lapidaire. The museum has a fascinating collection of ancient sculptures, artifacts, and historical pieces presented in a calm and beautiful setting. It was peaceful, interesting, and a great place to learn more about the region’s history. Best of all, entry was free, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Definitely worth a visit while exploring Avignon!

Visiting the archaeology museum was an unforgettable experience that exceeded all my expectations. The museum is beautifully organized, making it easy to explore the fascinating history of ancient civilizations. Every exhibit is carefully presented, with detailed information that helps visitors understand the importance of each artifact. From ancient tools and pottery to impressive statues and precious jewelry, every display tells an interesting story about the past. I especially enjoyed how interactive the museum was. There were informative videos, digital displays, and activities that made learning both fun and engaging. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to answer questions, which made the visit even more enjoyable. The museum itself is clean, spacious, and well maintained. The lighting and layout highlight the exhibits perfectly, creating an atmosphere that feels both educational and inspiring. I left with a much greater appreciation for archaeology and the people who work to preserve our shared history. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who enjoys history, culture, or simply wants to learn something new. It is an excellent place for families, students, and tourists alike. I will definitely visit again because there is so much to discover and admire.

Excellent presentation of classical art and pottery in this antique church. At the time we went the typical Egyptian, Greek, and Roman treasures were complimented by contemporary works. The vaulting of the church dramatically frames all the art, giving the visitor a sense of the changing tastes of creativity and human expression. The church faces one of the city's major streets, a few steps away from food and drinks. I highly recommend visiting.
Trung-Tin Dinh★★★★★
Musée Lapidaire in Avignon is an extraordinary destination for anyone interested in archaeology and ancient civilizations. Housed in a stunning former Jesuit church, the museum offers a captivating collection of artifacts that span thousands of years, with a strong focus on the classical antiquities of the Mediterranean. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, showcasing a wide range of ancient sculptures, mosaics, and funerary art from Roman, Greek, and Etruscan cultures. Each piece tells a story of the past, offering a glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and artistry of ancient peoples. The collection is both impressive and educational, providing a deep understanding of the cultural and historical context of the region. One of the best aspects is that admission to this incredible museum is completely free, making it accessible to everyone. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore ancient history without any cost. The setting itself adds to the experience, with the grandeur of the church’s architecture creating a dramatic backdrop for the ancient artifacts. The museum’s serene atmosphere allows for quiet reflection, making it easy to appreciate the craftsmanship and significance of each piece.

The view from the tower top is gorgeous! Best view of Avignon! It’s slightly tucked away from the city center and not touristy, so you can enjoy the view all to yourself! The price is very reasonable, for just 4 euros per person.
Seokjin Ham★★★★★
The tower, built around 1302 by King Philippe IV of France (Philippe le Bel), served as a strategic watchtower to monitor both the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the nearby Papal territory of Avignon. The original bridge once connected directly to this tower before partially collapsing in later centuries. Architecturally, the structure blends Gothic style with military pragmatism, reflecting its dual role as a symbol of royal authority and a defensive outpost. Today, it houses a small exhibition space inside, and from the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Rhône River, Avignon, and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.
Margie★★★★★
Visited at 2pm on a Thursday in mid October. Entry 4.50 euro. About 2 people there! You'll need to walk up the 124 step narrow stone spiral staircase with views out the narrow slit windows as you go. There are 3 levels - first level up there is a large room with several audiovisual booths - you can sit on a stone seat to listen in French or English. It was quite peaceful and cool there, hearing about history and construction. And one could look out the windows too. Level 2 was another large room with what looked like some stone walls with original painted designs. I didn't spend long here. Up further to the roof, one passes through an old hinged wooden door (keep it closed to stop pigeons coming in!). The top has parapets and another round tower which is inaccessible. The views are 360° - beautiful! Of the rooftops of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, the Rhône river, Palais des Papes and Pont d'Avignon. Being mid-afternoon the light was gorgeous - reflecting off the dark grey clouds and silvery Rhône of the west. You can observe life happening below on and off the river. I think the ambience of the place was heightened by being there totally alone - and thinking of what had taken place in this area over the centuries. Well worth the climb and entry fee!!
Caroline Findlay★★★★★
A definite must see for history buffs. I think this important monument is often overlooked because it’s not centrally located (within close proximity to the main sites). If you’re driving (or cycling) it wouldn’t take you long at all to get there. I walked from my hotel; it took me around 35 mins at a leisurely pace, with stopping time to take pictures along the way. Interesting place to visit, and the view from the top of the tower is worth the visit alone.
Alice Goss★★★★★

Practical Tips for Visiting Avignon

To make the most of your time in the City of the Popes, a little local knowledge goes a long way. While Avignon is welcoming and easy to navigate, understanding the rhythm of the city and its logistics will significantly enhance your experience. These recommendations are designed to help you travel smarter, save money, and avoid common tourist pitfalls.

1. Invest in the Avignon City Pass
If you plan to visit multiple museums and monuments, the Avignon City Pass (Avignon Passion) is an exceptional value. It provides free entry to major sites like the Papal Palace and the Pont d’Avignon, as well as discounts in shops and restaurants. You can often get the pass directly from your first hotel or the tourist office, making it a budget-friendly essential for culture lovers.

2. Time Your Visit for the Festival or Avoid It Entirely
The city has two distinct personalities depending on the month. In July, the Festival d’Avignon transforms the streets into a massive, vibrant stage with posters covering every wall—it is electric but crowded. If you prefer a quieter, more romantic experience with easier access to museums, plan your trip for late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September), when the weather is still gorgeous but the crowds have thinned.

3. Park Outside the Ramparts
Driving within the medieval walls is a nightmare due to narrow, one-way streets and restricted zones. If you are arriving by car, leave it in the free "Parking de l’Île Piot" and take the free shuttle boat or walk across the bridge, or use the large paid garages at the main gate (Porte de l’Oullins). This saves you stress and expensive fines.

4. Embrace the Siesta and Late Dining
Avignon operates on southern French time. Many shops and even some smaller museums close for a long lunch break between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Restaurants typically do not open for dinner until 7:30 PM or later. Do not fight the schedule; instead, enjoy a leisurely lunch and plan your sightseeing for the morning or late afternoon when the light is best for photography.

5. Use the Free Ferry and Walk the Rhône
Many visitors miss the natural beauty of the Rhône River. The Barthelasse Island, accessible via a free pedestrian ferry near the Pont d’Avignon, offers stunning, unobstructed views of the bridge and the palace skyline. It is the perfect spot for a picnic or a bike ride, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city center.

6. Look for the "Cuisine du Marché"
To eat well without overspending, avoid the tourist-trap restaurants directly on the Place de l’Horloge. Instead, look for menus advertising "Cuisine du Marché" (market cuisine) in the side streets, or simply visit Les Halles market. On weekends, local chefs often host cooking demonstrations and tastings inside the market, providing a delicious and authentic introduction to Provençal gastronomy.

Avignon is more than a stop on a river cruise; it is a destination that rewards slow travel and curiosity. By venturing beyond the main thoroughfares and allowing yourself time to simply exist within the ancient walls, you will discover the authentic pulse of Provence. Whether you are watching the sunset paint the Papal Palace gold or sipping a Côtes du Rhône in a shaded square, the city leaves an indelible mark on every visitor.

As you plan your Provençal adventure, remember that the best memories often come from unscripted moments—a conversation with a market vendor, the scent of fresh bread in the morning, or the echo of your footsteps on cobblestones. Avignon invites you not just to see its history, but to live it.
