Avignon is a city that rewards looking up. Beyond the medieval ramparts, the Popes’ Palace, and the winding cobblestone lanes, there is a vertical world of terraces, hidden gardens, and panoramic perches waiting to be discovered.
When the Provençal sun begins to soften and the stone facades glow gold, locals and savvy travelers alike head upward. A rooftop bar in Avignon is not just a place to drink; it is a front-row seat to one of France’s most dramatic urban landscapes.
From intimate hideaways tucked behind ancient walls to lively terraces buzzing with conversation, the city offers a surprising variety of elevated drinking spots. Each one has its own personality, its own view, and its own way of capturing the essence of southern France.
Whether you are looking for a crisp rosé with a view of the Rhône, a craft cocktail beneath the shadow of a cathedral, or a quiet corner to watch the sunset, Avignon has something for you. The key is knowing where to find these elevated escapes.
This guide is designed to help you do exactly that. We have explored the city’s heights, spoken with local bartenders, and considered what makes each rooftop worth your time and money.
Below, you will find a curated list of the best rooftop bars in Avignon, each selected for its atmosphere, view, and quality of drinks. After the list, we have included practical tips to help you make the most of your evening above the city.

Cafe located in Place Pie across from Les Halls. Lots of comfortable seating inside and outside. There are mostly shaded tables and some sunny tables.
Service is excellent. We have settled on this cafe after using several others over the years.
Nice cafe for cafe and croissants or a lite lunch.
Recommended.
The Nutella and sugar/citron crepes were very good.

Beautiful pub in the style of typical English pub. Lots of young people hang around spending time there probably thanks to comfortable sofas.

starting from entering the hotel, you have private pick up and very welcoming by hostess and the manager, our server was very helpful explaining the dishes and cocktails. Birthday surprise dinner was fabulous. the hostess showed us the swimming pool also, this place a little asian island in the middle of the south of France with the view on vineyards.

We had an amazing time here! What a unique place. They pick you up in their golf cart to go up the hill at the resort. That was fun! The atmosphere is amazing, the food and service also! They placed us right next to the side for a great view. Thank you so much! We hope to be back again one day.

We booked a table for 3 for 20:45. especially in order to catch the sunset from the Skybar. Unfortunately we were kept waiting form 15 minuites at the entrance and by the time we were seated at after 21:10 hrs the sun had set. what a pity!

Also I found the service a little slow.

Fantastic evening at La Bamboche thanks to Emma and Jules who dragged us there on Saturday, and honestly, no regrets!
The atmosphere was amazing from start to finish, truly festive and enjoyable. The service was also impeccable: the bouncers were cool and respectful, which immediately put us at ease.
Special mention also to the other bartender (sorry, I don't know his name) who was super friendly and efficient, always smiling despite the crowd.
In short, a very good experience; we had an excellent evening. I highly recommend it!
Pierre★☆☆☆☆
A completely unrealistic superiority complex for a bar in a shopping center.
We arrived as a group of four guys and the welcome was simply appalling. We were scrutinized from head to toe with contempt by an individual hanging around with the bouncers (probably the owner or a manager, judging by his attitude). The reason for being turned away? Shorts, even though we were wearing clothes. We were subjected to a ridiculous moral lecture ordering us to "make an effort" under the pretext that "there are girls wearing skirts on the rooftop." They need to come back down to earth: we're in the shopping center of Le Pontet, not in some ultra-VIP club on the French Riviera. Trying to act like a hyper-exclusive, elite establishment when you know the economic reality of the area (Vaucluse isn't exactly known for having the highest median income in France) is quite laughable. A "lounge" bar in the middle of a shopping center doesn't justify treating customers like that.
The funniest thing is the double standard: after my colleagues were turned away in shorts, we came back a little later with some girls. And then, as if by magic, the tone completely changed and the doors were wide open. Hypocrisy at its finest.
Once inside, the disappointment continued:
Mediocre drinks: €8 for a glass of vodka served in a simple plastic tube, with practically no alcohol inside. A real rip-off.
Atmosphere: The music for the "80s" night was completely off.
Overzealousness: We were given a hard time about discreet little chains around our necks, while security turned a blind eye and didn't say a word to other customers who wore them. The rules are applied arbitrarily. In short, a pretentious establishment that treats people badly at the entrance only to offer substandard service and drinks inside. Avoid it.
Estelle★★★☆☆
The service was excellent, no complaints there. The food was expensive for the small portions; we ordered a charcuterie board. The atmosphere wasn't great, slow to start, and a bit dull.
The music wasn't great.
It only started to get better around midnight or 1 a.m.
Unfortunately, I won't be going back; it was a flop.
golgote sarius★★★☆☆
Okay, I'll try to be constructive. This is my second time there, and the security is impeccable—5 stars!! Both the entrance and the dining area. As for the atmosphere, I don't mean to be harsh, but DJ Yvan was better in his heyday, but that's just my opinion. The service is fairly efficient, but the bartenders!!! I'm not talking about the one bartender who seems to be working alone; her colleagues are as slow as sloths. You'll wait 10 to 15 minutes for a drink, if they don't forget about you altogether, and when five people who arrived later are served before you, they prioritize acquaintances who don't pay!!! I saw a phenomenal number of people at the bar who were fed up with it. I've been clubbing for years, but I rarely see bartenders who seem to be on Prozac like that. Overall, the concept is a success, judging by the occupancy rate and the quality of the clientele. The large parking lot at the shopping center is a plus. It would be nice if the music started a little earlier, but I won't hesitate to change my rating or write a new review if I see that my analysis is incorrect or outdated. My review is intended to help improve the experience and not to harm anyone. I sincerely hope to change my review to a full 5 stars. Thank you for your understanding.

Stunning food in a lovely atmosphere. We reserved ahead so got a nice table.
I noticed one couple walk out due to no service which was unfortunate.
I alerted the bar staff to the water on the toilet floor but she said it was normal / it was not pleasant to have a wet floor. Needs to be fixed.
Other than that, we cannot fault the foods
Mike Ladd★★★★★
Le Bercail is one of those rare restaurants where the setting, the food, and the atmosphere all hit at once. Sitting right on the banks of the Rhône — with the walled city of Avignon rising across the water — it delivers a view so good it feels like part of the meal.Lunch was outstanding. I ordered the meat pizza, and calling it “generous” doesn’t do it justice. It arrives absolutely loaded with Serrano ham and prosciutto — easily a pound of beautifully salty, silky, paper‑thin perfection piled high on top. It’s indulgent, rustic, and exactly the kind of dish you remember long after the plate is empty. The beer and wine selection is equally impressive, with crisp pours and well‑chosen bottles that pair effortlessly with the riverside setting. Sipping a cold drink while watching boats drift by and the sun bounce off Avignon’s medieval walls is pure magic. What really makes Le Bercail special is the combination of great food and an unbeatable location. It’s relaxed, scenic, and full of that effortless Provençal charm. Whether you’re stopping in for a long lunch or settling in for a slow afternoon by the river, this place delivers. If you’re anywhere near Avignon, Le Bercail is a must.

The location and view was very beautiful and the waitress was nice and helpful. However, the portions were unfortunately quite small for the high price. The chicken was also dry and the food was not rich in flavor. An OK food experience but not what we expected from such a lovely location.

Spent a warm summers evening here - right by the river looking along to the Bridge of Avignon. I found the food a bit heavy for mid summer but it was very nice and extremely tasty. Could've done with more of a salad option.

We stopped in at Le Carré du Palais by accident, as we were passing by on a hot day. We were not that hungry but shared a risotto dish and had a couple of cold beer. The food tasted so good, and what we saw being sent to the nearby tables looked so awesome that we booked a dinner reservation for that night.
Returned at 7:30, sat on the same terrace in front of the Palace of the Popes, and had an absolutely astounding meal. Service was great, and the pace of the evening was relaxed. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Rei★★★☆☆
The dessert — Fraîcheur Meringuée Citron et Yuzu🍋🟩— was the undisputed star of the entire meal. A lemon sauce base at the bottom, a caramelized sugar shell with a satisfying crack, a molten yuzu center that flows out when you break through, and on top, what looks like whipped cream but turns out to be a cool, airy meringue frost hiding underneath. Delicate, complex, and genuinely unlike anything I’ve had before. I left a convert to French pâtisserie for life.
The starter, Foie Gras mi-cuit with Cévennes onion and raspberry condiment, was decent. I expected that signature silky, almost gelatinous texture, but this leaned drier and more terrine-like. The flavor was right, just not the mouthfeel I was hoping for.
And then there was the main. The Agneau de Provence en Deux Façons itself was forgettable, but the mashed potato deserves its own paragraph. The chef, seemingly determined to honor the spice trade routes of the Mediterranean, appears to have built the purée around a generous hand of cumin and coriander — the same aromatic backbone of South Asian cooking — and finished it with rendered lamb fat instead of butter, which coats the palate in a way that lingers long after the last bite. The result is a dish that tastes, with startling precision, less like Provence and more like a Pakistani kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. First bite: confusion. Second bite: genuine regret. Technically explainable. Spiritually unforgettable.🤮Also the portion was so small.
At €49, it feels steep for Avignon, though the location next to the cathedral is lovely. The service was a little bit rude.
5 stars, entirely for the dessert.

A must visit restaurant in Avignon.
Fantastic service and even better meal! The chicken dish and the lamb were superb. Go with the wine selections recommended for each dish. Do Not pass on the deserts. Wonderful presentation of all dishes and a very friendly and helpful staff! A+!!

This restaurant uses its perfect location to attract. But from the first moment all looks like global food network restaurant. Noisy. Waiting for seating even you have reservation. Nobody asks where do you want to be seated. Long waiting for waiter. All the time long waiting time. And noisy like in the pub. Food average. But rather poor. Cold foil gras from the can was not something I expected. Fist was cold and sauces and pure was not good. Winelist OK but only 2025 and 2024 vintages by the glass. For tourists not foodies
Luz Colina★☆☆☆☆
The location and views are definitely the highlight of Café du Palais. It’s a beautiful setting and a very nice place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere in Avignon.
Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the surroundings. We felt the quality was quite poor.
With such a wonderful setting and view, this place has so much potential. If they improved the quality and preparation of the food, it could be a truly great experience.

Pub Z does it all: art gallery (local artists are exhibited), sports show (decent football in the background without sound), cool rock music (but never too loud)...and best of all: great and fast people behind the bar, delicious beers (recommendation La Goudale), fine rum shots and cocktails. The zebra design is the programme. Lots of seating outside and inside. We have been there several times and always felt comfortable.
Alexandru Bulai★★★★★
The Zebra Pub, or Pub Z it's a bit of the essence of nightlife of Avignon. Beside the traditional well-known brands of liquors and beers, you should try the local ones. They taste so good, you'll want another one. And another. The bartender will recommend you what to choose from the list. And will take you places you've never been able to recognize, from the Greek Ouzo, Caraibean Rhum and the home-made ones that taste like Russia, The Mauresque. You'll go home happy and a little bit tipsy. Like the Zebra.

Paris and Beyond Tours★★★★★
we had the chance to have an amazing class with the couple managing the place.
It was truly amazing, they explain really well what is the true essence and balance of a cocktail.
We did this as a team building and they provided great content, great tips.
They strive to provide with local alcohols, they replace what you currently see in most bar by spirits made in France.
We did their activity with A La Francaise team, and at the distillery Manguin.

Discovered late night after seeing 3 shows in one day 😅. The owner is very creative, his cocktails are unique - and delicious!
Moreover he's very patient and welcoming. The location is quite central.

An Avignon gem. Went multiple times. Supremely finessed cocktails with inventive effects. The menu is impressive, but their improvised cocktails are equally satisfying.

Great cocktails. Wonderful bartenders. Nice menu of cocktails but we don’t speak or read French and were sitting at the bar so we just asked them to make us something, they asked some questions and then made us some amazing cocktails.

Enjoy the experience of old classics remade or base liquor used in new ways. Don’t like the mix on the list, tell the bartender what you like and explore ideas. If you want the old standard drinks, go to the hotel bar. Want to explore, come here!
Tips for Enjoying Avignon’s Rooftop Bars
A little local knowledge can transform a simple drink into an unforgettable evening. Avignon’s rooftop scene has its own rhythms, customs, and practical quirks that are worth understanding before you climb the stairs.
First, time your visit with the golden hour. The best rooftop bars in Avignon fill up quickly in the hour before sunset, so arriving early secures you a better seat and a more relaxed experience. The light on the ochre stone and the cooling breeze make this the most magical time to be above the city.
Second, embrace the local pour. Rosé from the nearby Luberon or Ventoux appellations is the quintessential rooftop order, but do not overlook pastis, the anise-flavored aperitif that defines Provençal leisure. Ask your server for a recommendation based on the season.
Third, dress in layers. Even on warm summer nights, the mistral wind can pick up suddenly and make an exposed terrace feel surprisingly cool. A light jacket or scarf will keep you comfortable long after the sun goes down.
Fourth, be mindful of accessibility. Many of Avignon’s rooftop bars are housed in historic buildings, which means narrow staircases, uneven steps, and sometimes no elevator. If mobility is a concern, call ahead to confirm access.
Finally, pair your drink with a small plate. Several rooftop venues offer excellent tapas, cheese boards, or Provençal snacks that elevate the experience beyond the glass. A well-chosen bite can turn a quick drink into a lingering, memorable meal above the rooftops.
Avignon’s rooftop bars offer more than a view; they offer a new perspective on a city that has been shaped by centuries of history, faith, and art. From a quiet terrace overlooking the Rhône to a lively perch near the Place de l’Horloge, each spot tells a different story about this remarkable corner of Provence.
So next time you find yourself inside the ramparts, take the stairs. Look for the small signs, the unmarked doors, and the glimpses of greenery above the stone. The best evenings in Avignon often begin with a climb and end with a glass raised to the sky.
