Sipping a coffee while gazing over a sea of terracotta rooftops and ancient bell towers is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the historic heart of Provence. Avignon, with its medieval walls and sun-drenched stone architecture, offers a unique vertical landscape that is best appreciated from above. The city’s café culture is vibrant, but the elevated venues provide an entirely different atmosphere away from the bustling cobblestone streets below.
Finding the perfect vantage point requires knowing where the locals go to escape the heat and the crowds. Whether you are looking for a quiet morning espresso before visiting the Palais des Papes or a sophisticated cocktail spot to watch the sunset, the city has a terrace for every mood. These elevated escapes blend French gastronomy with the breathtaking scenery of the Rhône Valley.
The charm of Avignon’s rooftops lies in their diversity. Some are hidden within boutique hotels, accessible only through discreet lobbies, while others are open-air lounges attached to cultural landmarks. The common thread is the unparalleled view of landmarks like the Pont d’Avignon, the Rocher des Doms, and the distant Alpilles mountains.
As a visitor, navigating the narrow streets to find these hidden gems can be challenging without local insight. Many of the best terraces are not visible from the street level, requiring you to take an elevator or climb a historic staircase. However, the reward of a cool breeze and a panoramic view makes the search entirely worthwhile.
This guide focuses on venues that prioritize quality service and atmosphere, ensuring you do not waste time on subpar locations. We have evaluated these spaces based on their beverage selection, culinary offerings, and the uniqueness of their sightlines. You will find options ranging from casual daytime hangouts to romantic evening destinations.
To help you plan your itinerary efficiently, we have curated a list of the most exceptional elevated venues in the city. Whether you are a photography enthusiast chasing the golden hour or a foodie seeking a memorable meal, these spots offer the best perspectives of Avignon.

We kicked off our wedding weekend at Cafe Roma with our family and friends last September. We could not have asked for a better night! Davide and the team went above and beyond to make our evening special. The atmosphere was beautiful, the drinks and food were fantastic, and the staff were incredible. Merci beaucoup Davide and team!!

A+ Resturant. Beautiful atmosphere and incredible thoughtfully prepared food. Our waiter Fabian was fantastic. I can’t recommend this place more. A must do when visiting Avignon. And for 38 euro for a starter, main dish, and dessert….. you can’t beat it. I can’t wait to come back!

Today is June 20, 2024. I had the 38€ special which includes a starter, a main, & a choice of desserts. If not too hungry, you can also choose individual plates.
For a refreshing drink, try the Hugo Spritz! It's very refreshing & one of the best I've had outside of Italy.
Bonne appétit & enjoy!🌻

Cafe located in Place Pie across from Les Halls. Lots of comfortable seating inside and outside. There are mostly shaded tables and some sunny tables.
Service is excellent. We have settled on this cafe after using several others over the years.
Nice cafe for cafe and croissants or a lite lunch.
Recommended.
The Nutella and sugar/citron crepes were very good.

Nice place in a lovely Avignon. The food was really good, but I want to point something out the first thing is time, the waiting time was quite long, second the most important for me there were problems with communication (speaking and trying to explain something to them in english was quite hard there). The toilet is old and wasn’t clean. Apart from this the restaurant looks nice and the surroundings is fabulous (the biggest advantage is definitely location)

Our lunch today was the best meal that we have had in our first week in France.
On arrival we were greeted with a smile and directed to a nice table.
We ordered two different salads and were very impressed when they arrived.
The presentation was very nice and all the ingredients seemed very fresh. The chicken was very moist.
A lovely meal and would definitely go back.

I tried the salmon crêpe with a cidre. The
crêpe was loaded with salmon inside and out. It was a very generous serving with a hearty cheese. I don't recall the type of cheese. It really satisfied my craving 😋. Very good. As with most ancient buildings, finding the bathroom is part of the adventure. It's inside and down some tight, windy stairs.

We stopped in at Le Carré du Palais by accident, as we were passing by on a hot day. We were not that hungry but shared a risotto dish and had a couple of cold beer. The food tasted so good, and what we saw being sent to the nearby tables looked so awesome that we booked a dinner reservation for that night.
Returned at 7:30, sat on the same terrace in front of the Palace of the Popes, and had an absolutely astounding meal. Service was great, and the pace of the evening was relaxed. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Rei★★★☆☆
The dessert — Fraîcheur Meringuée Citron et Yuzu🍋🟩— was the undisputed star of the entire meal. A lemon sauce base at the bottom, a caramelized sugar shell with a satisfying crack, a molten yuzu center that flows out when you break through, and on top, what looks like whipped cream but turns out to be a cool, airy meringue frost hiding underneath. Delicate, complex, and genuinely unlike anything I’ve had before. I left a convert to French pâtisserie for life.
The starter, Foie Gras mi-cuit with Cévennes onion and raspberry condiment, was decent. I expected that signature silky, almost gelatinous texture, but this leaned drier and more terrine-like. The flavor was right, just not the mouthfeel I was hoping for.
And then there was the main. The Agneau de Provence en Deux Façons itself was forgettable, but the mashed potato deserves its own paragraph. The chef, seemingly determined to honor the spice trade routes of the Mediterranean, appears to have built the purée around a generous hand of cumin and coriander — the same aromatic backbone of South Asian cooking — and finished it with rendered lamb fat instead of butter, which coats the palate in a way that lingers long after the last bite. The result is a dish that tastes, with startling precision, less like Provence and more like a Pakistani kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. First bite: confusion. Second bite: genuine regret. Technically explainable. Spiritually unforgettable.🤮Also the portion was so small.
At €49, it feels steep for Avignon, though the location next to the cathedral is lovely. The service was a little bit rude.
5 stars, entirely for the dessert.

Fantastic service and even better meal! The chicken dish and the lamb were superb. Go with the wine selections recommended for each dish. Do Not pass on the deserts. Wonderful presentation of all dishes and a very friendly and helpful staff! A+!!

This restaurant uses its perfect location to attract. But from the first moment all looks like global food network restaurant. Noisy. Waiting for seating even you have reservation. Nobody asks where do you want to be seated. Long waiting for waiter. All the time long waiting time. And noisy like in the pub. Food average. But rather poor. Cold foil gras from the can was not something I expected. Fist was cold and sauces and pure was not good. Winelist OK but only 2025 and 2024 vintages by the glass. For tourists not foodies

The location and views are definitely the highlight of Café du Palais. It’s a beautiful setting and a very nice place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere in Avignon.
Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the surroundings. We felt the quality was quite poor.
With such a wonderful setting and view, this place has so much potential. If they improved the quality and preparation of the food, it could be a truly great experience.

Chips were underdone, beef was more rare than medium in the burger, Caesar salad isn’t a Caesar salad it’s just crispy fried chicken on a bed of bagged lettuce. Not worth the prices they put on the menu, after complaining the waiter was very rude and dismissive. The restaurant had a strong restroom smell. Would not recommend at all!!!

A fantastic find in the centre of Avignon. The service strikes just the right balance—attentive without being intrusive. Really good food, good beer, and no one outside hassling you to come in, which makes a refreshing change. Highly recommended!

Stopped for a lunch drink and dessert. Staff very inattentive due not to ordering a full meal. Waited along time to get food, cream missing from dessert when we asked they said to follow but it never came so ate without. We waited so long for the bill that we started to leave in order to get their attention, we soon did then! Waiter was very arrogant. One of the worst places we visited to eat on our holiday.

We had a lovely brunch experience at Tulipe Café Restaurant in Avignon. The atmosphere was calm, stylish, and welcoming, with the kind of cozy modern aesthetic that makes you want to stay a little longer over coffee and conversation.
My girlfriend ordered the Tartine Salée while I went for the brunch plate, and both were excellent from start to finish. The brunch plate was especially well balanced and creative. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, from the scrambled eggs and toasted country bread to the Corsican sheep’s cheese and the fig chutney with Penja pepper, which added a really nice sweet and slightly spiced touch. The salad and savory granola also brought great texture and variety to the plate.
The biggest surprise for me, though, was the salted gorgonzola cookie with honey and walnuts. What a fun idea — slightly cheesy, lightly sweet, rich without being overwhelming, and genuinely memorable. It was one of those little details that makes a brunch stand out from the standard formula.
The coffee overall was very good as well. My girlfriend’s americano initially came out a bit flavourless, but the staff handled it perfectly: they replaced it immediately with an espresso, which was excellent. That kind of attentive and friendly service always leaves a strong impression.
A creative, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable brunch spot in Avignon that we’d happily return to.
Robert Kwok★★★★☆
Decided to visit this cafe when visiting Avignon (the only specialty cafe listed on European Coffee Trip for this town). Despite being in the heart of the tourist path, the quality of the coffee is not your usual dark roasted and quick turnover affair. Had a Americano and it was genuinely great.

Excellent food and service here. Highly recommend to anyone who’s visiting Avignon. I originally visited for their speciality coffee (v60) but their set menu for lunch looked too good to pass up. The best part was the friendly lady with glasses came to greet me and communicated that we could share which is not always the case everywhere in France for set menus. Oh and coffee was amazing as well☕️

Very nice cafe on a beautiful side street with chic indoor decor and beautiful outdoor seating. They have really good espresso drinks for dine-in or take-away. The breakfast formula has gazpacho, yoghurt with muesli, scrambled eggs, salad, cheese and waffle with chocolate, and it comes with fresh juice and good coffee. It’s a very nice place for brunch or lunch. They have a small lunch menu.

Company dinner (big group). Food was far from impressive. No aircon on a very warm night.
We ordered a specific brand of draft beer that they have at the bar, but (twice!) they served a cheaper one (mistake or bad faith?).
I won’t be back, sorry.

Mediocre service. Was almost impossible to get the waiters’ attention. They ended up forgetting bringing us water, they forgot the bring our bread (finally got it at the very end when we were done and we asked for it) and they brought us small beers instead of the pints we ordered while charging us the pints… food was OK but the mussels were 20-25% unopened so quite sloppy prep or cooking. Hopefully nobody is sick tomorrow.

Stunning food in a lovely atmosphere. We reserved ahead so got a nice table.
I noticed one couple walk out due to no service which was unfortunate.
I alerted the bar staff to the water on the toilet floor but she said it was normal / it was not pleasant to have a wet floor. Needs to be fixed.
Other than that, we cannot fault the foods

Le Bercail is one of those rare restaurants where the setting, the food, and the atmosphere all hit at once. Sitting right on the banks of the Rhône — with the walled city of Avignon rising across the water — it delivers a view so good it feels like part of the meal.Lunch was outstanding. I ordered the meat pizza, and calling it “generous” doesn’t do it justice. It arrives absolutely loaded with Serrano ham and prosciutto — easily a pound of beautifully salty, silky, paper‑thin perfection piled high on top. It’s indulgent, rustic, and exactly the kind of dish you remember long after the plate is empty. The beer and wine selection is equally impressive, with crisp pours and well‑chosen bottles that pair effortlessly with the riverside setting. Sipping a cold drink while watching boats drift by and the sun bounce off Avignon’s medieval walls is pure magic. What really makes Le Bercail special is the combination of great food and an unbeatable location. It’s relaxed, scenic, and full of that effortless Provençal charm. Whether you’re stopping in for a long lunch or settling in for a slow afternoon by the river, this place delivers. If you’re anywhere near Avignon, Le Bercail is a must.

Spent a warm summers evening here - right by the river looking along to the Bridge of Avignon. I found the food a bit heavy for mid summer but it was very nice and extremely tasty. Could've done with more of a salad option.

Update: I returned 15 days later and they now have copper mugs for their Moscow Mule drink. They are very responsive to that feedback, however, my wife ordered the poke bowl and asked for chopsticks but they still didn't have any. If you serve Asian food, you have to have chopsticks!
I also don't like the fact that a random person brings the food upstairs and has no idea who's food is who's. We ordered two different smash burgers with different options and we were given them swapped and we didn't find out until after we started eating. It kinda ruined the experience for me again.
It was an overall good experience however I couldn't give 5 stars because of a few reasons. First of all I ordered a Moscow Mule drink and it came in a regular clear glass and not the standard copper mug. If I ordered wine, I would expect it in a wine glass, if I order a martini, I expect it in a martini glass, a Moscow mule is no different. If you don't have the proper serving vessel, don't put that drink on your drink menu. The Moscow mule tasted very good, but everyone thought I ordered a mojito or something.
Secondly, I ordered the Pad Thai aux Crevettes from their asiatic menu and it came without chopsticks. I kindly asked for chopsticks and they said they don't give chopsticks. Even the main picture on their asiatic menu clearly shows chopsticks. It really took away from the experience as I was struggling to scoop up the small peanuts and onion pieces with my fork. I do want to mention that the plate looked nice and had a good flavor.
Overall, the staff was friendly and the ambiance was nice, but was just lacking some basic yet important dining utensils.

Since then, we've returned several times as a couple or with our family. We love it! On June 4, 2025, as promised, we came back to eat on the mezzanine. A smiling and pleasant waitress greeted us at lunchtime. Lunch was good, and we just have to come back in the evening. On May 30, 2025, our first visit was at lunchtime. The Archipel restaurant is a great find, a new, original, modern, and appealing concept. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. The decor is magnificent. Our order was taken at the table, including drinks. The concept of several different kitchens allows everyone some freedom in managing who wants to eat. The food is varied and of good quality.
The prices are very reasonable. We will come back to try the mezzanine and possibly in the evening to see if the concept is different than at lunchtime.
Tips for Choosing the Best Rooftop Experience in Avignon
Selecting the right rooftop café depends on the time of day and the type of experience you are seeking. The city’s climate and the orientation of the terraces can significantly affect your comfort and the quality of the view. By planning ahead, you can ensure that your elevated break aligns perfectly with the Provençal sun and the city’s rhythm.
Check the Sun Exposure: The Mediterranean sun can be intense, especially between noon and 4 PM. If you are visiting during the summer, look for terraces that offer shaded areas, umbrellas, or awnings. Morning visits are often cooler and less crowded, while late afternoon provides the best lighting for photography.
Reserve for Sunset Hours: The hours just before sunset are the most coveted times for rooftop seating. Many of the more exclusive terraces have limited seating and high demand during this window. Calling ahead or making an online reservation will save you from disappointment and ensure you get a front-row seat to the changing colors of the sky.
Consider the Dress Code: While Avignon is generally relaxed, some hotel rooftops and upscale lounges enforce a smart-casual dress code in the evening. Avoid beachwear or overly casual athletic clothing if you plan to visit a higher-end venue for dinner or cocktails.
Look Beyond the Menu: While coffee and wine are essential, the best rooftops offer small plates or Provençal specialties that enhance the experience. Check if the venue sources local ingredients or offers regional wines like Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This elevates your visit from a simple drink stop to a culinary highlight.
Check Accessibility: Many historic buildings in Avignon do not have elevators due to preservation laws. If you have mobility concerns, verify that the terrace is accessible before you climb several flights of stairs. A quick phone call to the venue can clarify the access situation and save you physical strain.
Time Your Visit with the Mistral: The famous Mistral wind can make an open terrace uncomfortable, even on a sunny day. Check the local weather forecast for wind speeds before heading out. A sheltered terrace or one with glass windbreaks will be much more enjoyable when the wind picks up.
Exploring Avignon from above provides a completely different perspective on the city’s architectural harmony and natural beauty. The contrast between the bustling squares and the serene rooftops allows you to appreciate the scale of the Papal Palace and the winding Rhône River in peace.
Whether you are taking a break from sightseeing or ending your day with a glass of local rosé, the right terrace transforms a simple beverage into a lasting memory. As you plan your journey through Provence, make sure to look up—the best seat in the house is often waiting just above the street.
