While Avignon is world-renowned for its medieval ramparts, the Palais des Papes, and the famous broken bridge, the city has quietly cultivated a dining scene that rivals its historical grandeur. Nestled in the heart of Provence, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a culinary landscape defined by the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea and the bounty of the Rhône Valley.
For locals and travelers alike, the concept of a “seafood restaurant” in a landlocked city might seem like a contradiction, but Avignon’s strategic location makes it a hub for fresh catches. Daily deliveries from the ports of Marseille, Sète, and the Camargue ensure that oysters, sea bass, and langoustines arrive at the kitchen door still tasting of the salt air.
Whether you are looking for a casual plateau de fruits de mer on a sun-drenched terrace or a refined gastronomic tasting menu in a vaulted medieval cellar, Avignon has an option to satisfy every palate and budget. The city’s chefs blend classic French techniques with Provençal ingredients, often pairing delicate fish with local olive oil, saffron, and crisp white wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Navigating the narrow cobblestone streets to find the perfect meal can be overwhelming, especially during the busy summer festival months. To help you dine like a local, we have curated a guide to the absolute best seafood tables in the city.
From hidden gems tucked away near Les Halles market to elegant dining rooms overlooking the Place de l’Horloge, these establishments prioritize freshness above all else. You will find everything from traditional bouillabaisse to modern interpretations of raw fish, all served with the distinct warmth of Provençal hospitality.
Without further ado, here is our definitive list of the best seafood restaurants in Avignon.

Everything was perfect. The experience of great seafood and generous breads, and the service was amazing-! I highly recommend here for all who want to have a big portion of seafood with a reasonable price and quality of food 👍

We almost walked past, but had a great dinner. Mussels were outstanding with seasonings that were uniquely goods. I have never had them prepared in this way. The staff speak very little English, but we’re extremely accommodating and friendly. It’s a picture menu, so there is no guest work.
Keep in mind, this is a no alcohol restaurant.

Nice service! So nice to tourists and the food so good.

We have traveling for the past month. By far, they had the best fries 😁
We had Moules Frites and Fish Soup. Balanced flavors with a fresh lemon zing in the soup. Moules Frites was cooked in butter and herbs. Flavorful!
Didn’t speak English and tried his best to accommodate. Thank you!

Great experience for a quick change of taste from the usual French food. Seafood specialty shop, fresh seafood, convenient parking across the street for free at pharmacy, 10 min from Avignon city centre. Owners showed great hospitality towards non French speakers.

Very fresh and tasty oysters. Great food and a very enthusiastic owner who generously shares several rounds of white wine for us to pair with the oysters and mussels. We enjoyed our brunch very much.

Located both inside (south east corner) and outside (south west corner) of the market. Serves a variety of fresh seafood platters for individuals or groups (2-3 or 3-4ppl). Waiters were very helpful and friendly. We received another table’s order of oysters by accident, but the waiter was very apologetic for mistake and didn’t charge us for the oysters. I would definitely visit this place on any future visit to Avignon.

Do not expect extravaganza, relax and enjoy by far the best oyster bar from the last months , we have asked by a plater of 12, and order plus 6, after those another 6 and ...

Very friendly staff and great oysters! The crevette was a bit average but it was all good! Will come back for more oysters for sure!

Excellent value for money for a classy seafood restaurant near Avignon. The Bretonnes no. 1 and Gillardeaux oysters "un vrai régal", as they say in France! Followed by grilled fish (sea bream) of the day, again top quality. Couldn't resist the floating island dessert. A glass of Sancerre, a Picpoul, and I was a happy man. During the week the also do a very fairly priced lunchtime set menu. Will return very soon.

The freshest and the tastiest seafood I’ve had the whole trip! Raw oysters and mussels are so fresh they are sweet. Shrimps are perfectly seasoned and cooked. Grilled seafood are extremely tasty as well. Dessert is simple but delicious. Great hospitality from the staffs.

We came across it on Google Maps randomly as we were trying to find a seafood restaurant near to our hotel in Avignon. Glad we did find this place because it's pretty remotely located on its on on a quiet road. They have exceptionally fresh seafood and fantastic, attentive friendly service from this restaurant. We had the seafood platter 95€ plus crab 19€. We chose to eat outside but there is also indoor seating as well. We arrived around 18:30 and it started to get quite busy around 19:30. Seems like a well established family run restaurant. Would definitely come back if we're in the area.

We had a great dinner. The seafood was really amazing. Especially the starters, mussels, shrimps, snales really high quality. The main dishes were also great. The risotto and the plat du mer. Perfect. Great service. Highly recommend.

A fantastic dinner for four, with warm, attentive service. The young proprietors are very invested about their new venture (opened Dec 2025) and make you feel very welcome, and are clearly genuinely happy when you enjoy a dish. To highlight some particular menu items to recommend — two of us live in Portugal, but we can confidently say the octopus starter here was the most tender we’ve ever had; and the saffron emulsion accompanying the fish of the day is sublime!
Cynthia McColl★★★★★
Delicious fresh dishes. The menu is creative and surprising. We will be back for dinner!
Susan Newton Johnson★★★★★
Everything was exceptional, from the service to the food. Fresh mahi mahi with tender fennel and pistachios in a savory sauce was outstanding. Carrot entree with smoked paprika dusted popcorn was amazing! Service was perfect! We’d go regularly if we lived here.

We ate here two years ago and the food was great. This time it was mediocre. The roasted beetroot starter was far too big and dull. The confit lamb was very average. The octopus starter was good.

We stopped in at Le Carré du Palais by accident, as we were passing by on a hot day. We were not that hungry but shared a risotto dish and had a couple of cold beer. The food tasted so good, and what we saw being sent to the nearby tables looked so awesome that we booked a dinner reservation for that night.
Returned at 7:30, sat on the same terrace in front of the Palace of the Popes, and had an absolutely astounding meal. Service was great, and the pace of the evening was relaxed. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Rei★★★☆☆
The dessert — Fraîcheur Meringuée Citron et Yuzu🍋🟩— was the undisputed star of the entire meal. A lemon sauce base at the bottom, a caramelized sugar shell with a satisfying crack, a molten yuzu center that flows out when you break through, and on top, what looks like whipped cream but turns out to be a cool, airy meringue frost hiding underneath. Delicate, complex, and genuinely unlike anything I’ve had before. I left a convert to French pâtisserie for life.
The starter, Foie Gras mi-cuit with Cévennes onion and raspberry condiment, was decent. I expected that signature silky, almost gelatinous texture, but this leaned drier and more terrine-like. The flavor was right, just not the mouthfeel I was hoping for.
And then there was the main. The Agneau de Provence en Deux Façons itself was forgettable, but the mashed potato deserves its own paragraph. The chef, seemingly determined to honor the spice trade routes of the Mediterranean, appears to have built the purée around a generous hand of cumin and coriander — the same aromatic backbone of South Asian cooking — and finished it with rendered lamb fat instead of butter, which coats the palate in a way that lingers long after the last bite. The result is a dish that tastes, with startling precision, less like Provence and more like a Pakistani kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. First bite: confusion. Second bite: genuine regret. Technically explainable. Spiritually unforgettable.🤮Also the portion was so small.
At €49, it feels steep for Avignon, though the location next to the cathedral is lovely. The service was a little bit rude.
5 stars, entirely for the dessert.
Mark Brumbaugh★★★★★
A must visit restaurant in Avignon.
Fantastic service and even better meal! The chicken dish and the lamb were superb. Go with the wine selections recommended for each dish. Do Not pass on the deserts. Wonderful presentation of all dishes and a very friendly and helpful staff! A+!!
Bartosz Górczyński★★★☆☆
This restaurant uses its perfect location to attract. But from the first moment all looks like global food network restaurant. Noisy. Waiting for seating even you have reservation. Nobody asks where do you want to be seated. Long waiting for waiter. All the time long waiting time. And noisy like in the pub. Food average. But rather poor. Cold foil gras from the can was not something I expected. Fist was cold and sauces and pure was not good. Winelist OK but only 2025 and 2024 vintages by the glass. For tourists not foodies
Luz Colina★☆☆☆☆
The location and views are definitely the highlight of Café du Palais. It’s a beautiful setting and a very nice place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere in Avignon.
Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the surroundings. We felt the quality was quite poor.
With such a wonderful setting and view, this place has so much potential. If they improved the quality and preparation of the food, it could be a truly great experience.

What a find! Very hospitable staff. Top notch food at reasonable prices. Wonderful wines by the glass.
cucumber and feta gazpacho
Dish that I cannot recall, but seriously looks awesome right? Arugula and tomato and something. Sorry can't recall.
Iberian pork with passion fruit was a treat! So soft, so tasty. Could take bites and sip wine all day.
The bread was amazing - get it!
Just a wonderful experience. Wish I could describe the dishes better or more precisely. I remember saying that this was an excellent meal and at the price we felt like we robbed the place.

*** Highlights:
“The cutest restaurant ever” - my wife
*** What we liked:
The Magret de Canard and the Fish are absolutely sensational - how do they make these dishes so well executed? The apricot tart is homemade
*** Recommended?
It’s a very nice spot located center of Avignon. They offer several menus varying between 27-45€. The service is very polite, the food is impressive and the presentation is spot on. Will return and recommend

Excellent service. Did not feel rushed. Lovely wine selection. The food was prepared with devotion, and a master of the culinary craft. I am celiaque, and the staff was knowledgeable and accommodated via modification where needed. The complexity and creativity in our meals was very appreciated. Merci!

Food is above average - value for money, but not super nice. Tried two 3-course set in Avenio menu - both starter and main dish are below expectation, dessert is good.
Service is missing. Waiting too long between courses (not even a full house), feel ignored.
No AC, very hot indoor.
Overall, it’s still a nice local restaurant, but not worths the Michelin gourmand.
Laurie Simone★★★★★
There is a reason this restaurant has been Michelin rated every year. The food and presentation are fantastic. A unique combination of flavors makes each plate so delicious. Desserts combine herbs and fruits. The restaurant itself is very inviting and the staff are excellent. They speak English fluently as well.

After a wonderful day spent with my partner in Avignon, I couldn't think of a better place to enjoy dinner. The restaurant offers a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes for a truly enjoyable dining experience.
The food was exceptional—freshly prepared, beautifully presented, full of flavour, and perfectly balanced. I would highly recommend trying one of their specialties, as the quality of the cuisine was outstanding. The service was equally impressive, with the staff being incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We were served almost immediately, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
The only minor confusion was understanding the ordering process, but that was entirely my own oversight and certainly did not detract from the overall experience.
Considering the excellent food, outstanding service, and inviting atmosphere, L'ardoise offers exceptional value for money. I would gladly return the next time I am in Avignon and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

We passing by found this place by accident and after enjoyed our delightful lunch and realised it was on our restaurants map that our guest house host provided to us.

Absolutely incredible! Everything was perfect. We got 2 of their lunch special plates (goat cheese & fig ravioli and veal tartare) and they were both delicious 😋 the lunch special deal is out of this world! We each got one of those dishes, a glass of house wine, and a desert for 16 euros each 🤯 staff is super friendly and provided excellent and timely service. We sat outside and it was a great ambiance. Literally one of the best meal experiences of my life, dollar for dollar.

Hadn't booked but they kindly found room for our group of 4. We were off to a great start! From then on it went downhill. 50 mins later we decided to grab a waiter as still no food or appero order taken, not even a jug of water had been given us (very hot day). Appero coming took another 20 minutes. Before we had time to finish our appero the food came. Timing skills sorely lacking. Food reasonable quality albeit chip portions tiny. Would not go back and would try the other closeby options even Mcdo would have been better

Tips for Choosing the Best Seafood in Avignon
To ensure your dining experience is as memorable as the city’s architecture, it helps to understand a few nuances about eating seafood in this Provençal hub. While the restaurants listed above offer exceptional quality, knowing how to navigate the menu and the local customs will elevate your meal from good to unforgettable. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind when selecting your dishes and securing your table.
-
Prioritize the "Arrivage" (Daily Catch).
Always ask your server about the "arrivage du jour" or the daily catch. Unlike meat dishes, the seafood menu often changes daily based on what the fishermen brought in that morning. A restaurant that can tell you exactly which port the fish came from is a restaurant that cares about transparency and freshness.
-
Book Ahead During the Festival d’Avignon.
If you are visiting in July, the city’s population swells dramatically for the theater festival. The top seafood spots are small and intimate, and they book out weeks in advance. Secure a reservation for dinner, especially if you want a table on a terrace or in a specific dining room.
-
Embrace the Plateau de Fruits de Mer.
If you want the ultimate test of a restaurant’s quality, order the seafood platter. This towering selection of oysters, whelks, shrimp, and crabs is served cold and requires zero cooking—meaning there is nowhere for low-quality produce to hide. It is best enjoyed with a glass of crisp Picpoul de Pinet.
-
Look for Local Provençal Fish.
While you might be tempted to order salmon or cod, ask for regional varieties like Loup de Mer (Mediterranean sea bass), Rouget (red mullet), or Saint-Pierre (John Dory). These species are local to the Mediterranean and are usually the freshest options on the menu, often prepared with herbs like fennel and thyme.
-
Mind the French Dining Hours.
Unlike some tourist-heavy cities, Avignon generally adheres to strict French dining times. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM. Arriving at 6:00 PM looking for dinner will likely leave you waiting outside a closed door, so plan your day around the local rhythm.
Avignon is a city that rewards those who take their time, whether you are exploring the ramparts or lingering over a long lunch. The seafood here is more than just sustenance; it is a reflection of the city’s connection to the broader Mediterranean culture that lies just beyond the Rhône.
As you plan your itinerary, be sure to leave room for spontaneity. Sometimes the best meal is found not on a list, but by following the scent of grilled fish and garlic down a quiet side street. Bon appétit!
