Finding a great meal in Avignon rarely means compromising on quality, even when you skip the meat. The city’s culinary identity is deeply rooted in the sun-drenched produce of Provence, which naturally lends itself to vibrant, plant-forward cooking. From historic squares to quiet cobblestone alleys, the dining scene has evolved to embrace both traditional Provençal vegetables and modern global vegetarian cuisine.
For visitors, navigating the tourist-heavy areas around the Palais des Papes can be tricky if you are looking for something beyond a standard margherita pizza or a side salad. Fortunately, many chefs in Avignon treat vegetables not as an afterthought but as the star of the plate. This has led to a welcome shift where dedicated vegetarian and vegan establishments sit comfortably alongside traditional bistros that have mastered the art of the vegetable-forward assiette.
The local markets, particularly Les Halles, play a significant role in this culinary landscape. Chefs here have access to heirloom tomatoes, glossy aubergines, fresh goat cheese, and aromatic herbs like thyme and rosemary. This proximity to high-quality raw ingredients means that even the simplest vegetarian dish often bursts with a depth of flavor that is hard to replicate elsewhere.
Whether you are a strict vegan, a lifelong vegetarian, or simply a traveler looking to lighten your diet while exploring the Vaucluse region, Avignon offers a diverse range of options. You can find everything from gourmet tasting menus to casual cafes serving organic juices and grain bowls. The challenge isn’t finding vegetarian food; it is narrowing down the best spots to fit your specific mood and budget.
To help you make the most of your culinary journey in the City of the Popes, we have curated a list of establishments that consistently deliver exceptional quality, atmosphere, and service. These are the places where the locals go when they want a meal that is both satisfying and rooted in the agricultural richness of the region.
Below, you will find the definitive guide to the ten best vegetarian restaurants currently delighting diners in Avignon. Each venue has been selected for its commitment to flavor, ingredient sourcing, and overall dining experience, ensuring you won’t miss out on the true taste of Provence.

Creative and tasty flavours for both savoury and sweet dishes, beautifully plated, very satisfying, and friendly service. It’s extremely popular during Festival D’Avignon (great for people watching!), so there’s no sitting around idle after you’ve finished - it’s time to clear the table and let the next people in to enjoy a meal, as they don’t take bookings and need to keep it all moving. Don’t forget to take your plates and glassware back to the kitchen when you’re done. We’ve been several times and haven’t ever had to wait long for a table because of this efficient system. Highly recommend!

I went with my mum and my sister for dinner on a Monday night close to closing time. We had initially tried to go earlier in the day at 12pm but the restaurant was closed (despite the opening times on the door). My mum (50+ years old) was not feeling too hungry so we decided to share 2 mains and 2 desserts between the three of us (the 3rd main we had been considering was sold out). We also got a glass of wine each. The owner began to yell at us that he "was running a business" and that we were causing him to lose business by ordering only 2 mains between 3 people (we had also ordered 2 desserts and 3 glasses of wine). This was not done calmly or discreetly but by loudly screaming at us in front of the restaurant. I totally understand how difficult it is to run a restaurant and would never try to take advantage of a restaurant owner who is kindly providing hospitality. This is far from what happened here. We were treated quite rudely and made to feel bad. On top of that, the food was quite mediocre. The only thing I remotely enjoyed was the tart of the day. Hugely disappointing experience.

My friend is a vegan while I’m not. The fish I ordered is really salty that even drinking a lot of water will never help out. Though the tomato dessert sorbet was good and the waiter is accommodating

Lovely fresh vegan/vegetarian food in Avignon. Limited menu but still plenty of choice, and everything is done well. Reasonably priced, with a good selection of beers, wines and soft drinks. It is a "one-man" operation, so it is "counter service", and is highly recommended.

Service was good in the beginning. The waitress was nice and explained the menu in English to us. But when we got the food one dish was extremely salty even the lettuce was salty, the chickpeas tasted like they were poured directly from the can and the tomatoes tasted a bit like mold. The vegetables in the other dish were cooked to mush. Tasty but we could eat them through a straw.
When we asked the waitress about the salty dish she said that she would consult the kitchen but then she never returned. We paid in advance so I guess that's the service that you get.
I wouldn't go eat here again although they have nice beers.

This is the best food I’ve had in France so far. We started with the falafel and hummus appetizer, which was outstanding. I ordered the steak tartare—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. My wife and daughter had the chicken pita plate, and both finished everything on their plates. The service was excellent, and the owner was incredibly friendly—he even treated me to a beer.

We found this little spot on a quiet side street in Avignon, and it felt like stepping out of the city noise for a bit. The owner made it feel personal from the moment we walked up to it The owner was super nice and actually wanted us to enjoy our evening. We had the shakshouka and beef tartare, and both were better than we expected, rich in flavor and honestly almost too generous to finish. Portions didn’t feel skimpy or pretentious, just the right kind of plentiful. You could talk without shouting, which doesn’t happen enough when you’re eating out. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you because of how it made you feel, not just what you ate. If we were staying longer in Avignon, we’d go back without thinking twice.

The reviews are definitely accurate and the food, atmosphere and owners live up to the hype. Everything was incredible! Salem (owner) was so kind and even wrote us a list of places to visit for the rest of our time in France. Such a great experience and if we had more time in Avignon we would 100% come back again.
Thank you from two very happy & full Canadians 🇨🇦🍁!

We never expected the food to be this good. My kids, my husband and I all thought this was by far the best restaurant we ate in all of our vacation. When we came at first the attendant was very kind and even gave us tips for where to go! He was very friendly to my kids and even gave us some cold beverages because of the hot temperatures! We would like to go there again!
Very recommended!!

We had an incredible experience at this restaurant! The hospitality and kindness shown to us was amazing alongside the absolutely stunning food! We were spoilt for choice with the menu but everything we picked was incredible. We would highly recommend this restaurant as the perfect lunch stop on a trip to Avignon.

The location, especially the outdoor terrace is great, but that's about it. The food is of average quality (the soup was too liquid, tiramisù biscuits were not soaked properly) and definitely overpriced. The staff is friendly but slow. Not recommended

A meal I wanted to finish, but I never wanted it to end. Absolutely delicious meal for €23. Got the pork with vegetables and rice, banana chocolate cake and an appetizer. The pork fell apart in my mouth and the way the juices blended was wonderful. I shared with my 2 sisters. My sister thought the vegan option was splendid as well.

A simple, cafeteria-style with limited but delicious menu.

I loved this spot - the food is delicious and the service and atmosphere are warm and welcoming. There were at least two vegan mains each time I went and vegan options for entrées and desserts too. The portions are very generous and the dishes well balanced and filling. The outdoor seating had a lovely vibe too and a great spot to shelter from the heat and relax.

Yes, yes, and yes!
Fantastic little restaurant with a fab selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The owner was super friendly, and rather than trying to explain everything that was on that day’s menu, he showed me what was on offer and let me choose what I wanted.
Portion sizes were quite big (even by my standards!) but I wolfed down the whole lot because the food was so delicious! Best way to describe the food is: wholesome, hearty, and homemade. It was so good!
I’ll definitely be returning if ever I’m in Avignon again, and I highly recommend dining here.

We had an absolutely wonderful time when we had dinner a few weeks ago. The food was great, super value-for-money and the owner was most hospitable, talking us through every dish patiently (he helped to translate since we couldn't read the menu!). We was so enamoured that we came back for dinner the next day and we were so lucky - they organised a small musical gig with drinks just outside their restaurant. Everyone was just dancing and having a great time.
Thanks so much and we wish your eatery all the best!

This was an incredible experience! We were warmly invited to sit, encouraged to enjoy the sun, and informed of options that were available but weren’t on the menu. Our host was so kind and lovely, as well as especially patient and helpful as we practiced our French, all while taking excellent care of us. The food was fantastic and we were thrilled at the atmosphere of sitting outside, watching people interact, and enjoying the perfect Provençal day! Many thanks to Chez Nine. 💙

We had a great lunch at Chez Nine. It’s small, quirky and cozy. It was a bit crowded but they made sure to accommodate our group of 5. I ordered the Planche Nine and it was super tasty! In addition, I would like to highlight their help and flexibility to ensure our friend with milk protein allergy also had a great meal! Definitely recommend!

Chez Nine is the type of local restaurant you always dream to find when visiting a new town. The food is like eating in a chef's home kitchen with everything cooked from scratch and the menu changes daily. Nine and her mum couldn't have been more kind. We had the best salad with local and fresh ingredients, incredible omelette and our daughter had a french style pizza that she loved. If coming from the main train station avoid the touristy restaurants before Palais des Papes and take a right and is a 2-3 minute walk. Nine and her mum gave us the best tip to go the jardins and then up on to the hill with the best view of the city and the Pont d'Avignon. Couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough and can't wait to go back.

We happened upon this restaurant as we were wandering around the city. The food is incredible and what an affordable lunch menu! We had the special of the day which was absolutely delicious! I had a lovely cucumber salad to start, with a swordfish and au gratin potatoes and a pear tart for dessert while my husband had a ravioli appetizer followed by a tomato with pork terrine and rice with wild mushrooms followed by a dessert cheese with peach colis. It was incredible and the service was so noce! Atmosphere was relaxed and easy to hold a conversation. I would highly recommend dining here!

We had a delightful lunch, the food was of the highest quality, the servers were very patient, as I do not speak French, we have been in Avignon for 4 nights traveling around the region, this was the best food we have had. What a delight! After completing my review, I have just read about the purpose of the restaurant in providing youth at risk with employment and learning. I am even more impressed. We did not know this at the time of our visit, what a wonderful project! Everyone should visit!

A wonderful discovery!
This restaurant is a superb project, offering simple cuisine and fresh ingredients. Delicious, a must-try. The prices are very affordable, and at the same time, you're supporting a socially responsible project. You can also leave a little extra for a charitable meal. The setting is very pleasant.
gerard boccard★★★★★
During a visit to Avignon, we stumbled upon "Graines de Piment." As luck would have it, we were very glad we did. The manager gave us a very warm welcome and explained how the restaurant works, giving a chance to young people reintegrating into society (a very good initiative). The dining room was lovely, decorated in neutral tones. Our order was taken by very pleasant staff. A three-course meal for €18! A very reasonable price... What else could you expect at that price? Verdict: it was excellent. That day, we enjoyed:
* Puff pastry with goat cheese and honey, served with a small salad
or
* Warm lentil salad (of good quality)
* Bull stew (Avignon style, with white wine), carrots, and celery root purée
* Homemade apple tart with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
To accompany our meal, we ordered a carafe of Côtes du Rhône for €6, a nice touch. We finished with coffee. In short, a truly wonderful place where the quality is evident and the service is excellent, with a young and friendly staff.
We congratulated the Chef and his team, who certainly deserved it.
A great place to know and recommend, offering exceptional value for money. We will definitely return if we are ever in the area again.

I absolutely love this new Avignon spot 💙
Already a fan of their first neighborhood eatery (on Rue Jean Henri Fabre), I was very curious to discover their takeover of the beloved Chez Françoise… and they've more than succeeded.
The place is magnificent. The renovation is superb: the iconic large table and banquette have been preserved, the soul of the place remains intact, but everything has been modernized with impeccable taste. The deep blue blends perfectly with the light and contemporary furniture, creating an atmosphere that is inspiring, calming, and bright. The terrace facing the conservatory is particularly pleasant.
Special mention goes to the attention paid to families: a children's corner has been set up on a small mezzanine with books, games, beanbag chairs, and even a coloring table. It's rare to see a place designed with such intelligence and generosity.
On the plate, it's as wonderful as ever: fresh, seasonal, often locally sourced cuisine, with a menu that changes daily (be sure to check out the stories on Instagram @kouk.avignon to see the daily specials!). There are several main course options, sandwiches, salads, always vegetarian and gluten-free choices, and excellent value for money (main course + drink + homemade dessert for €17.50). You'll never be disappointed, and the koukies are still amazing 😍.
In the morning, the breakfast options are just as good: smash croissants, porridge, eggs, pastries, homemade cakes… and hot drinks worthy of the best coffee shops. Special mention goes to the chicolatte caramel macchiato: a delicious, caffeine-free chicory drink.
Kombucha, kefir, local lemonades… everything is well-balanced, thoughtfully designed, and incredibly welcoming.
A vibrant, warm, modern, and peaceful place, run by a lovely and helpful team. A true neighborhood eatery, the kind we wish we saw more often.
5 stars, well deserved. Go there without hesitation! And long live Kouk 🩵💙!
Seating capacity: approximately 50 indoors, approximately 40 outdoors

I've known Kouk since their very beginning on Rue Henri Fabre. Now I'm following them on their new adventure in the heart of Avignon's city center.

The food (and the fresh squeeze) was excellent! Both the portion and flavor were well worth the price, making it a perfect choice for a hot summer day. Although we barely speak any French, the staff kindly labeled the flavors in English for us. They were incredibly friendly and helpful when we asked for translation assistance. We truly appreciated their delicious food, outstanding service, and warm hospitality.

Portions for the rice bowls are rather small. The pictures don't match the meal. I got the red fusion bowl and it barely had veggies. My friend's breef wrap had very stringy and plastic-y textured meat. Overall it didn't taste bad, it was ok, just disappointed.

Very complementary to the existing offers in Avignon. Healthy food of high quality with great service. It is ideally located in the Intramuros and seating is clean, new and modern.
Flavio Meyer★★★☆☆
Overall fine for lunch. The portions are a little smaller but look good. The drinks taste like almost nothing which could be because of them being sugar free. They had sugar syrup for us to put in which made them taste better. The carrot muffin was okay. The cookie a little dry and weirdly, the rice kind of tasted like cinnamon. We got our food quickly and they were friendly.

Great concept. You simply pick the courses you want direct out of the fridge. If warming is needed the waiter heats it for you. Great, as in G R E A T value for money. Best glutenfree place for me till date, and I am not the person looking for glutenfree, but my partner. However I found it great without any reservations. Bravo.

Incredible flavor, especially the eggplant parmesan, and the gnocchi (€8.5 each). We also had the quinoa (€4.5), and little loaves of bread (for just €0.50) and carrot cake! All very reasonably priced. It is premade in glass containers and they heat it up do you. It looked like all glass, metal, or paper is used. So nice!! And super friendly staff! Really enjoyed eating outside in the courtyard, but there is also seating inside. 100% will do back!

A cute, rustic little French restaurant in the middle of a small square next to the old St Peter’s cathedral in Avignon’s old town, only a few minutes’ walk from the Pope’s Palace. Service was very friendly. The food was Excellent. We had the L'Épicerie plate, which was a surprisingly filling salad with various little dishes to sample, and the steak with potato gratin and vegetables, both very good. The cheesecake dessert was artfully plated and also very good. Overall a great place to eat when visiting Avignon.

Enjoyed a lovely dinner here a few weeks ago (8 June) as we sat in a peaceful courtyard in front of the Basilica St. Pierre. Even though we did not have a reservation (and the place was nearly full), the owner graciously arranged a nice table for 2. Our dinners, from a small focused menu, were fresh, flavorful, thoughtfully presented, and of course...delicious. Paired with a nice bottle of chardonnay simply added to a delightful evening. Highly recommend having dinner at this gem. You will not be disappointed. Reservations recommended.

Atmosphere is great, we had our dinner outdoor just in front of the church facade. Service is quick and kind. The food is good, well served. I had higher expectations on the quality and the available choices that I found a bit limited. All in all a great place to be to live the Avignon scene.
Tips for Dining Vegetarian in Avignon
To truly enjoy the vegetarian scene in Avignon, a little local knowledge goes a long way. While the city is increasingly accommodating, dining habits and timings can differ from what you might be used to. These practical tips will help you navigate menus, markets, and meal times like a seasoned local, ensuring you get the best possible experience from the city’s plant-based offerings.
1. Master the "Formule" at Lunchtime
Many of the best restaurants in Avignon offer a formule or menu du jour during lunch hours. This is often a two- or three-course set menu that provides incredible value. Look for options that feature légumes du marché (market vegetables) or ask if the kitchen can substitute the meat course with a vegetable plate. Dining at lunch is the best way to experience high-end Provençal cooking without the high-end dinner price tag.
2. Visit Les Halles Market for a DIY Feast
If you want to understand why the vegetarian food here is so good, head to Les Halles market (Tuesday to Sunday mornings). Inside, you will find stalls selling stuffed vegetables, tapenades, artisanal breads, and local cheeses. It is the perfect place to assemble a picnic to enjoy in the Rocher des Doms park overlooking the Rhône river, offering a fresh and budget-friendly alternative to restaurant dining.
3. Learn the Lingo for Hidden Ingredients
While the word végétarien is widely understood, traditional French cooking often hides meat in stocks or garnishes. Be aware of terms like lardons (bacon bits), bouillon de volaille (chicken stock), and gélatine. In Provençal cuisine, watch out for anchoïade (anchovy paste) which sometimes sneaks into dips. Don’t hesitate to ask, "Est-ce que c’est 100% végétarien?" to be absolutely sure.
4. Check Seasonal Opening Hours
Avignon is a city of seasons, and many smaller, independent vegetarian cafes and bistros adjust their hours drastically outside of the summer festival months (June and July). Before making a special trip to a specific restaurant, especially in August or on a Sunday or Monday, always check their social media or website for current opening hours, as closures are common during the low season.
5. Explore Beyond the City Walls
While Avignon proper has plenty to offer, some of the most magical vegetarian dining experiences are just a short bike or bus ride away in the surrounding Provençal villages. However, if you are staying strictly within the ramparts, focus your search on the neighborhoods surrounding Rue des Teinturiers and Place Pie, which tend to attract more bohemian and health-conscious eateries than the main tourist drags.
The evolution of Avignon’s dining scene proves that vegetarian cuisine is not a trend here but a celebration of the region’s agricultural soul. By choosing to eat plant-based, you are often getting the purest expression of Provençal terroir—the sweetest tomatoes, the most fragrant basil, and the creamiest goat cheese. It is a way of traveling that connects you directly to the landscape and the people who cultivate it.
As you wander through the medieval streets, let your palate guide you toward the places that prioritize freshness and creativity. Whether you settle into a cozy courtyard bistro or grab a vibrant bowl from a modern cafe, you are sure to leave Avignon with a deep appreciation for how satisfying and diverse vegetarian dining can be in the heart of southern France.
