Nantes may sit just under two hours from the Atlantic coast, but its café culture feels entirely its own. Once a bustling port city defined by shipyards and biscuit factories, the historic capital of Brittany has transformed into a creative hub where industrial heritage meets artistic innovation.
Coffee here is no longer an afterthought. Over the last decade, a wave of passionate roasters, artisan bakers, and specialty baristas have reshaped the local scene, turning the simple act of drinking coffee into a genuine ritual.
From the medieval half-timbered houses of the Bouffay district to the regenerated warehouses on the Île de Nantes, the city offers a remarkable diversity of spaces. You will find sun-drenched terraces, hidden book-filled lounges, and minimalist Scandinavian-inspired interiors.
What unites the best addresses is a shared commitment to quality. Local micro-roasters supply freshly roasted beans, while kitchens emphasize seasonal produce, homemade pastries, and vegetarian-friendly brunch menus that go far beyond the standard croissant.
Navigating the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming for visitors and locals alike. Whether you need a quiet corner for remote work, a lively spot for a weekend brunch, or a quick double espresso at the counter, knowing where to go makes all the difference.
This guide curates the definitive list of the fifteen best cafés in Nantes. Each entry has been selected for its coffee quality, atmosphere, service, and consistency, ensuring you find the perfect spot for every mood and occasion.

Located among some alleyways, this popular cafe occupies a former industrial building. It is very spacious and stylish. Visited on a Monday afternoon and this place was literally full.
Back to its coffee, I had a filter du jour (batch brew). The coffee was perfectly balanced and full of flavours (I used to be skeptical about batch brews as if you visit a cafe, you would naturally want to have something freshly made).
Service is swift and friendly.

Beautiful little garden, fresh tasty pastries (vegan options available too!) and coffee served by friendly staff. It was the best soy iced latte I’ve had in France 😊

Went here with my friend. The place is so good and spacious. I ordered the Matcha, i like it because it’s not so strong unlike the one that we have in Asia.. the staffs are so nice and very accommodating. 🥹🩵

We ordered Two cappuccino, a croissant and a Bowl of yogurt. The croissant and the bowl were good but the cappuccino was terribile It was burnt and the milk had a strange texture and taste. The price was a little too high.

So glad to have discovered this cafe. Been coming here at least once a month since then, every time we have the stopover at the train station. The coffee is good, pastries as well. The ambiance is quite warm, with nice staff. The proximity to the train station is a great advantage. We were so sad when we came here once and it was closed for the day 😆

I had a great experience. The staff were polite, professional, and very friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere throughout our visit.
The cappuccino and the cake I had were both amazing—fresh, well-prepared, and really enjoyable.
Overall, a lovely place and I would definitely recommend it.

Perfect little restaurant and cafe. Lunch special was very good.
Service is very friendly and accommodating.
I can see why it is very busy here. 😊

Gorgeous place and fabulous, incredibly kind staff. I had the opportunity to try two delicious desserts, the chocolate fingers and the Paris-Nantes, which I highly recommend. The place is very refined and there is attention to detail, including the fact that they gave us a bottle of water directly, instead of glasses. I highly recommend trying this place, it's very good.

Stopped off here recently to pick up a coffee and it was really nice. I loved the fitout of the café and especially the royal blue colour of the furniture- it was very pretty and welcoming. The guy who served me was really nice and talked to me about coffee and where they source there own coffee. Coffee was well made and beautiful blend. My dog and his friend also got a lovely drink too. Good price.

I have been coming to this place for some time to do things on my laptop because I liked the atmosphere. So I came this Saturday, worked on my laptop and drank coffee, decided to order another coffee when the waiter came to me and said that I shouldn't be on my laptop on a Saturday (after I had already been there for at least an hour). If I had known this earlier, I would not have ordered another coffee. All in all, a very unpleasant experience

Just discovered Horizon today and i am amazed !
I thought i loved my coffee before walking in this place, but I clearly re-discovered it today !
The team very kindly offered to help me choose a coffee that would fit my taste, and completely blown my mind with a watermelon tasting coffe, and then another one that tasted like marshmallows meets a pine tree !
What an experience, will be back !

One of the best cafés in Nantes. I went there twice; their cappuccino is a must. I combined my coffee with a carrot cake which was tasty and fluffy. Very warm and friendly staff (they speak english if needed). Great organised and decorated space; it also shares its space with KiloShop (the shop next door) so you can browse some second hand clothes while drinking your coffee. I totally recommend it!
Anna Rebs★★★★★
great place to chill while I was waiting for my train. very cozy and warm. i’m a fan of their pastries!!!
Marina Koniou★★☆☆☆
The coffee and cakes were simple but tasty 😊
We went on a Saturday and actually the person working there (propably the owner?) didnt let the customers stay as long as they wanted and especially those who were studying. She told them to go away because they were occupying the tables. (they were both paying customers with drinks and food) one of them hadn't even finished their breakfast.
I won't visit again.
Quentin Couland★★★★★
A charming little coffee shop (right next to a thrift shop) that you could easily miss, but it would be heartbreaking.
The inside is very cozy, with wood and warm lighting, and tables of different size that can accommodate a surprisingly high number of people, considering the size of the room.
The menu has everything to please you, including different types of (hot or cold) coffees, teas or hot chocolate, generous cakes, or even various dishes for lunching!
The staff is very pleasant and helpful, which adds to the experience.
Overall, a very nice place to spend some time, alone or with some friends!

Coffee only review. As friendly as humanly possible, we were welcomed like family. The 2 espresso coffees were really well made and presented from good beans. Terrific cups. The drip filter was reported to me as pretty weak, and having some uncoffee like flavours (reported by a serious coffee expert). Great place we look forward to returning to, and hopefully dining.

Very nice place to drink a coffee. Coffee is well made. Very nice interior which also acts as a gallery. The place also has an upper floor. The owner is a really nice guy. Haven't had a chance to try the cakes but no doubt they're great.
Edit: Had to update this. My suspicion was correct: the cake is impeccable! It has just the right amount of softness that makes it an absolute delight.
Highly recommended!

Super nice. Cool. Healthy local organic food. Warm atmosphere. Independent business.
Perfect coffee!!!! No bitter espresso here.
Great place for work and leisure.
Call in advance: they are often full.
I came back since last review above. I now have made it one of my fav spots to go for coffee or lunch when I come to Nantes. If I can find a spot. Brew, filter, or espresso. Beans of choice. Somewhat limited menu (not a restaurant per se) and food goes fast but excellent healthy lunch.
Once more: better reserve or if you come late may be ask to reserve lunch for you!
One super plus: dogs are welcome and Mystic who I saw there a couple of times is sooooo sweet and zen and welcoming without being intruding.

Le Café de l'Orangerie is one of those super relaxing little spots hidden inside the Jardin des Plantes. You can grab a coffee or lunch surrounded by plants and huge trees, and the terrace feels like a quiet escape right in the middle of Nantes. Perfect after a walk through the garden.

I visited at noon on a Saturday and I would recommend making a reservation if you want to sit on the terrace ; however, whether you sit inside or outside, the food is delicious and the staff is nice. Especially after a walk through the garden, this is a great stop! I had the salmon filet and it was to die for.
Anna Kornilova★★★★★
I enjoyed the food, fast friendly service and the price of my lunch visit. I loved the main dish of Pork/soy with carrot mousseline. Lemon curd with not so sweet cheesecake worked great and the salmon paired with Grannysmith apple for an appetizer was tasty, interesting, although small:) Highly recommend! Staff speak English.

My family had a very enjoyable 3 course meal here. The staff were very welcoming and hard working; the food excellent! We ordered everything on the menu just to taste the dishes, and we ate every bit. The atmosphere and location are also lovely. During our short trip through France, we visited this coffee shop and ended up coming back twice because the coffee here is truly excellent: perfect foam, beautifully steamed milk, and delicious pastries. My husband and I are big coffee lovers and have visited many specialty coffee shops, and I believe this is one of the best we’ve ever been to. I highly recommend

I loved it! Very cozy with a touch of nature that gived you a lot of time to enjoy your coffee. Their coffee, amazing. Not to mention their brownies that is a combination of chocolate and peanuts which is my favorite.
I love the location too because it is near from center shops like ZARA and H&M but it's very calm. Thank you for the warmth greetings, I definitely will come back.

Delightful café with cheerful staff... they are not just Joyeux in name! Food and special drinks are great. Coffee is just okay... usual French standard: not bad but not amazing. They employ persons with disability, and the manager is exceedingly supportive of the staff! ❤️

We happened to visit drawn in by the yellow facade. Really sweet and nice. Great concept, which we only realised after looking at the paintings, pictures around. There was a lady able to help us with our poor English to French translation.
Croque Monsuer was very nice, with a nice vinaigrette on the seeded salad. Paired with lemon juice and two cakes, one chocolate muffin and one walnut/pecan loaf slice. All were lovely!
Service was also super quick too, politeness as well 🙂
Highly recommend!

I had been waiting for them to open and was excited to try it. I ordered the vege burger & salad, with an extra side of crispy potatoes. PS: It’s also very close to the Château des Ducs de Bretagne.
Lucía Pérez Castro★★★☆☆
I chose this restaurant in Nantes because of its brunch menu, which stands out compared to many other places. They offer a wide variety of brunch dishes, with the option to customize them to your liking by adding plenty of extras.
The pancakes never disappoint — the batter was fluffy and not too sweet, perfect for pairing with fruit and chocolate.
The eggs Benedict were beautifully presented, and the eggs were cooked just right. However, I would tone down the vinegar a bit — the acidity overpowered the cheese flavor in the muffin.
I added eggs and beans to the salad of the day, and it turned out to be a great combination for a super healthy breakfast. The portions are generous, and the avocado was perfectly ripe.
The baked beans had a delicious homemade tomato sauce, which I loved. Unfortunately, the lentils had a sour taste, as if they had gone bad, so I had to leave them.
This place has a lot of potential.

I like this cafe. It has its own style. I love the vibe and design of the coffee shop. Though it would be nicer if the floor is even and without pit holes. The pour over is okay, wouldn’t say it’s exceptional. However the flat white is good. I also got some expression beans home and they are great. 张露Lu Zhang★★☆☆☆
We (2 people ) noticed this new place in the city centre and decided to give it a try. The staff was nice, but the quality of food was nothing special. I think this place was trying to be Japanese (right?) However, i think there are still some places to be improved. First, the decorations in shop is (in my eyes, i am a Chinese, with family connections in Japan) is a little old-fashion. But my friend (French, studied Japanese language for 2-3 years) told me that this is probably how western people perceive what "Orient" would be.
We had two cups of Japanese tea. The tea was served in tea bags and hot water in pot ("western way of serving tea").
We also had a soufflé pancake (called fully pancake on the menu). It was just a very small piece of pancake considering the price. I saw other clients' photos, there are two pieces of pancake on their plates. Maybe they asked for two portion? Plus, what was worse. The pancake was partially frozen in the middle... I know that soufflé was supposed not to be completely cooked, but at least thr batter is fresh, not like egg-flavoured ice cream, right?
My friend was very kind, he still finished it, and talked to the waiter after paying the bill. The waiter explained to him that the fluffy pancake is supposed to be half cooked...and asked him to tell the staff right away when it happened again, and promised a discount for the next visit.
However i don't think i will go there again. I'm sorry.

Tips for Enjoying Nantes’ Café Scene
To truly experience Nantes like a local, a little preparation goes a long way. The city’s café culture is vibrant but operates on rhythms that may differ from larger capitals like Paris or London. Understanding these nuances will help you avoid long waits, secure the best seats, and appreciate the local coffee philosophy.
Respect the Off-Peak Hours
Nantes cafés are notoriously busy between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, especially on weekends. If you are looking to secure a table for brunch without a reservation, aim to arrive before 10:30 AM or wait until after 2:30 PM. Weekday afternoons are generally quiet and perfect for remote work or reading.
Look for Local Roasters
The best coffee in Nantes is almost always tied to a local roastery. Beans from regional roasters dominate the menus of top-tier establishments. Ask your barista about the current single-origin offering or the house blend; they are usually eager to discuss flavor profiles, acidity, and brewing methods.
Embrace the "Café Gourmand"
While many specialty shops focus on filter coffee and flat whites, do not overlook the French tradition of the café gourmand. It is an espresso served alongside a selection of miniature desserts. It offers an excellent way to sample the pastry chef’s talent without committing to a full slice of cake.
Check for Kitchen Hours
Not every café serves food all day. Many high-quality kitchens close between 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM to reset for evening service. If you plan on eating lunch or a late-afternoon snack, verify the kitchen hours beforehand to avoid disappointment.
Bring Cash for Small Purchases
Although card payments are widely accepted, some smaller independent kiosks and historic establishments enforce a minimum spend for card transactions. Carrying a few euros in cash ensures you can grab a quick espresso or a viennoiserie without hassle.
Explore Beyond the City Center
While the Bouffay and Graslin quarters are beautiful, some of the most exciting cafés are located in the up-and-coming neighborhoods of the Île de Nantes or the Talensac market area. Venturing slightly outside the tourist core often rewards you with more spacious seating and a more relaxed, residential atmosphere.
Nantes is a city that rewards curiosity. The beauty of its café scene lies not just in the quality of the espresso but in the distinct personality of each neighborhood and the people who run these spaces.
Whether you spend a rainy afternoon watching the trams pass by from a window seat or enjoy a sunny terrace overlooking the Loire, the cafés of Nantes offer a window into the city’s soul. Take your time, strike up a conversation with your barista, and savor the blend of Breton warmth and urban creativity that makes this city so special.
